1. Welcome and Introductions
2. TTY Telephone Demonstration
- Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations & Equity have had increased
focus on Equity
- City of Pickering has also focused on Equity issues
- Committee suggested we work with staff to identify needs of disabled
committee
- now have TTY access through; 1) Customer Care Centre
2) Library
3) Recreation Complex
4) Transit
5) Councillor's Office
Rose Harding and Debra Wight did a presentation for Committee Members:
- City of Pickering is a leader in this service, other Municipalities do not have this
service yet
- want to keep services going
- Accessibility Audit Committee —how accessible are Pickering's services / facilities
- Schools are also working towards accessibility
- Pine Ridge Secondary School, built 8 years ago, met building code
- Now have new technology:
i.e. motorized scooters, computer desks (not moveable), hard to accommodate
scooters
- Computer Room now has mobile carriages and monitors near the end of the room, this
provides easy access particularly in the event of a fire
3. Notice of Motion
- Clerk advised us that because we are created by will of Council in By -Law in 1970,
changes we need must be amended in the By -Law
- presented notice of motion on Monday night
- will be back on Agenda for October 2, 2000
- Councillor Dave Ryan read notice of motion that enables elected representatives to
appoint senior rep, disabled rep, and student rep's from Pickering High School
- Committee recommended changes to "membership from the Seniors & Disabled
Communities" to allow for more than one person (i.e. disabled it can be more than
one person with various areas of interest)

Sandy — Disabled Representative
- once By -Law is passed- Councillor Ryan will extend formal invitation to them
- extend invitation to Aisha Umar's mother — active member of MECA (group approved)
- Aisha is formally stepping down from Committee but would like to stay involved
particularly with special events
4. Year 2000 / 2001 Projects / Events
"Through Our Eyes" — Monika Jensen
- pay Program Coordinator or Monika honorarium
- 2 hour program — in school
- students selected
- weights, gloves, Wheelchair with these items (equipment)
- 45 minutes in equipment and then talk about experience
- can take 25 students at a time
- each student brings experience back to the classmates
- leave the school materials and workbook to continue the learning, can customize lessons
for schools
- can get exercise done in 75 minutes
- students must be old enough to reason
Councillor Ryan suggested that the Committee sponsor activity in building for Council
and Staff
- Committee suggests this presentation be conducted with Council and Senior City Staff
in January
- Monika would do free presentation for Council, but if other seminars are booked in the
Community, then they would be booked through her association and paid for
Councillor Ryan asked people to take events in June's minutes back and consider them
for the next meeting.
