MEETING MINUTES
A meeting of the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity was held
in the Pickering Civic Complex Main Committee Meeting Room on Tuesday, December
7, 1999 at 6:30 p.m.

1) Welcome & Introductions:
Councillor Ryan welcomed all in attendance and introduced Nicole Rioux.
2) Strategic Planning Process Updates:
Gary Ranalli distributed a handout summarizing five key areas for group discussion.
The Committee split into groups, discussed each area and suggested amendments.
The Mission Statement and Core Objectives in each area will be amended and
distributed at the next meeting..
Demogrraphy /Community Diversity
Action Items:
a) Review statistics from Stats Canada, Social Development Council and the Town
of Pickering with a possible presentation being made to the committee.
- Composition — Age, Gender, Social Groups, Language, Ethnic.
Race Relations and Equity
Action Items:
a) Create a CD Rom — menu based — voice, music and photographs can be used.
- good venue to inform the community of the committee and programs.
b) Mall Display

Community Relations and Partnerships
Action Items:
a) Involvement of media.
b) Nicole will bring information to the next meeting outlining groups who deal with
the disabled.
c) Add the Committee to the Website.
d) Invite a variety of groups and /or organizations to the meeting and make a
presentation on the resources they have available.
e) Advertise on community page.
Leadership
Action Items:
a) Promote with a CD Rom.
Advisory Role
Action Items:
a) Undertake a review of the policies relating to Equity issues.
3) Y2K Events:
a) Marissa advised that she has been in contact with the Pickering Town Centre who
have shown an interest in partnering with the Town for Heritage Week. The
Town will promote this event and the Town Centre will do the physical set up. A
display table will be set up and entertainment will take place. Possibly have
presentations made by students. This event should take place on a Friday and
Saturday. Steve suggested that possibly seniors and youth could participate.
b) Mobeen advised of the Walk for Human Rights from Queens Park to City Hall
which will take place on March 21 st
4) Other Business:
a) Philip distributed copies of an article which appeared in the Toronto Star on
November 27, 1999 concerning Web information relating to festivals, fiestas and
holy days around the world.
b) Gary advised that the students at Pine Ridge Secondary School are involved in a
month long project entitled "Celebration of Black History.
c) Fred advised that he is involved with kids at the Sarah McDonald House who will
be performing at Ballycliffe Nursing Home on Monday, December 13`h, 1999.

5) Future Meeting Dates:
The following meeting dates, as outlined in the Minutes of November 17th, 1999 were
approved:
