WEST ROUGE COUJiMNITY ASSOCIATION'S PUBLIC MEETINU mar.1801961. 8 P.M., Wednesday, March 22nd, 1961. at the RAINBOW ROOM Following; the usual business, the meeting; will be addressed by Mr. Gordon Hepditch, County Assessor for Ontario County, and a well-known authority on Municipal matters. Also for vour edification and pleasure will be shown a film in color, nrenared by The Conservation Authority of Metropolitan Toronto and District entitled "Legacy of the Valleys-" . Coffee will be served. Let's see a g REEVE PROPOSES LAND SWAP Reeve A.ri.Campbell of Scarboro has just submitted a pronosa.l that the main branch of the Rouge River be made the boundary between the southerly portions of Scarboro and Pickering. In other wordo, the Reeve is prepared to swap about 6000 acres of rural land in the northeast corner of Scarboro for the more or less urbanized piece of Picker- ing known as ,Vest Rouge and which hac an area of well under 2000 acres. Perhaps we should thank the Reeve for the com- pliment. Reeve Scott says he hasn't heard anything official about it. If it were serious, he thought Scarboro would have talked it over with his township first. Anyway, its something to talk about folks, and we can already hear Borne of the wordy arguments. From a planner's point of view, the Rouge River with its deep valley is a much more sensible boundary than our present town line which is non --existent as a road for much of its length. But do we want to be part of Scarboro and Metro? Would we be better off? I heard a fellow sr,y that at least we would get oirt of School Area Two. Has Scarboro got more land now than it can handle? Would it be better for Picker- ing Township to take over these 6000 acres and leave us (West Rouge) where we are? We don't know the answers but it gives us something to think about, and we wouldn't be surprised, if it were ,z topic for dissuasion at our meeting on Wednesday night. Ru;,;; Ferguson is having trouble getting tfla' er Meter readings. Unless residents co-operate it will be necessary to hire a mc,n to read the Water Meters. AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL PARENTS IN WEST ROUGE AREA. The Executive of the West Rouge Home end School Club went to know if you parents really wart a. Horne and School Club. This year - since Sept. 1960 - the attendance at the meetings has been shameful. Now it is time to elect a new executive and unless you make your intentions known, your present executive is ready to call quits. Jjr. Weever, Princil)al of West Rouge public School and his staff put them- selves out to attend the meetings. They feel that the Home and School Club is an asset and is needed. Will ea.ch of you please write your reactions to this letter - giving "Beefs" as well as suggestions and mail or send your replies to the school? We have planned a meeting for April 12th, 19610 8.15 p.m. is the time the meeting is called. There will be a panel discussion and then the teachers -will be in their classes to interview parents - Afterwards coffee will be served. This is an early reminder. Thank you all, in advance, GRACE SMITH Vice -President. WRCA Annual ',.!Petirlg Our annual meeting with election of officers is scheduled for the first week of May. We hope to make this a. "Garden Night" with an address on landscaping, flowers etc. At that time, dear mernbers, you will owe us another dollar. AROUND TOWN _2 with Pierre Tumpnn4 A sure sign of springy; is the signs appearing on roads limiting trucks to "half loads." I wonder if the police departments ever check up on the gas trucks to see if they are only half filled. It won't be long now till the golfers will be patronizing our local greenery. Did you hear the story that Councillor Laycox shoots golf in the seventies! Any colder than that he stays home and waits till. it warms up. Hc many Gordon Sinclair fans will appo-,e Fluoridization of the West Rouge water supply? Why don't they make beer and soft drinks with the Fluoride water and thereby save the township many thousands of dollars? Now is a good time to conult your seed catalogues for the inspiration you will get from the pictures of colourful flowers and lurch green grass. Speaking of grass, does your lawnmower need sharrening?? Until rnich time as we get street lights, why not make it a practice to leave your front porch light on as a friendly guide to those of ua who oc- casionally have to walk home. Most residents on Friendship Avenue do so already. Drive around down there some night and see for yourself. I wonder if we will have, one more big snow storm before old man winter finally leaves us for good?? Too bad the local store merchants don't get together and stage our own Easter parade at the shopping centre promenade. Under proper promotion, we could have a poor man' s Bay, Bloor €area at our Island Road and Friendship Ave. corner. It has changed back and forth so often now that even the post office employees are confused. Let's call ourselves "West Rouge" and let the post office Department serve the people for a change. The Hydro Office and the Telephone Company now list us as "West Rouge". Look out for a big fat 10 mill raise in your taxes this year, follow- ed closely by a multitude of "for Sale" signs in front of a lot of homes. A mill is worth roughly $5.00 on the avervi,e house, so standby for a fifty dollar increase in your real estate taxes. If and when we get sewers, up go the taxes again! WHi,T' S WRONG WITH OUR SHOPPING CENTRE We of West Rouge are fortunate in having a shopping centre of our own, and most of us are or should be int- erested in its welfare and develop- ment. At present, three of the stores are unoccupied. We would like to see them all rented and busy (and The Fairway could use more ads.) Each busy store helps to draw customers to the other stores. Lacking fairly complete shopping facilities, our folks are liable to drive miles to one of the big centres and do their shopping there. So we decided to ask you to write our Editor and make suggestions. What type of new stores would you like to see established? A specialty store? A lien's Store? A shoe Store? or what. Do we want a bank? Would so.ne land- scaping help? It's obvious that we can't compete with great big centres like Oshawa, but surely we cbn get a group of stores carrying a sufficiently wide variety of merchandise so our ordinary wants could be supplied. Let's have your suggestions, and if you hZve a "beef", get it off your chest, Write: Dick Jolliffe 135 Ridgewood Rd. The Clinic for West Rouge will be in the school April 10 and 13 afternoon and evening. Every yeHr a Citizen is honoured in the city as the outstc:nding person of the yeer and I believe if West Rouge h d to rick such a personality it would be pretty hard to pin it down to ore person as I could name several one would be Dick Jolliffe, Ridgewood Rd. While many of us are curled up reading; or watch- ing T.V. he is working away. Dick is always on hand at social functions entertaining with songs and music and his main idea in publishing this com- munity paper was to try and keep the residents closer together by letting them know what is going on locally. Mrs. Mary Scott, East Ave., certainly rates high for her work as Local Chairman of Our Red Cross Campaign Canvass each year and right now has been handed the T.E. Survey, Chair- manship which no one else in the whole of West Rouge would handle and if 'Mrs. Scott had not consented to tackle the job there would have been no Survey or Clinic in the district. He is president of the Junior Hockey Assoc. and spends every gat. afterroon keeping tabs on everything that ha.ppens on the ice. On Sunday mornings while most of us ere enjoyirg a late breakfast Jim is busy pounding out the hockey games of the day before play by play on the typewriter. He would make an ideal Sports Writer for any paper. Mrs. Shirley French, Rouge Hills Dr. would 1,e another choice. She is Superintendent of GrEce Prestbyterien Sunday School which is a full time Job itself. She looked after the advertisements for the Fairway up till Christmas and is active in several organizations in the district. Her husband Jim must have found his year as President of the Kiwanis much easier with Shirley to help him with his duties. We hear via the grapevine that Mr. Alex Munroe, East Ave. has been appointed Vice Principal of Dunbarton High School for next fall and if he accej:ts the position we wish him every success. The Pickering Red Cross Canvass is at its peak and if you haven't been called upon asyet we will try and get to everyone tefore the end of the month. So give with a smile even if it hurts. WORDS OF WISDOM FROM OUR GOVERNOR- GENERAL. Recently Governor—General George Vanier, made theese remarks "One of the greatest needs of the moment is for a more active and wide spread civic spirit. We must take pride in our communities and refuse to tolerate injustice and inefficiency within them. Civic pride originates at the parish or community level; as it rises it blends imperceptibly with patriotism.' EXPRES34AY ROUTE Some time ago we were concerned and alarmed by the possibility of the Gardiner Expressway's eastern ter, ainua would be right in the middle of our community. Apparently now we don't need to worry. The Expressway as planned now splits West Hill and joins highway 401 east of the Highland Creek Bridge. We can now breathe a sigh of relief. TO THE LADIES OF THE VIEST ROUGE THE WEST ROUGE LADIES' CLUB cordially invites all the ladies living in the West Rouge to join our Club. The Club has been in operation for many years and is primarily an orgfinization based on a GETTING TO K, YOUR .gEIGHBOUR policy, together with raising f undo for the better- ment of the Community. (Despite rumours to the contrary.) The Club meets every second and fourth Thursday of each month (with the exception of July and August) at the Nest Rouge Public School at 8a30 131:. Monthly dues are .25 per member. Parliamentary procedure is observed at all the business meetings - although there axe times when things get a little lively - but on the whole, we are a fairly orderly group. We endeavour to schedule every second meeting as an even- ing of entertainment, such as a party, or a film show, a sale, demonstration of some product, or an interesting speaker. The intervening meetings are uoua.11y devoted to fund-raising activ- ities, such as the annual BAZAAR, with which many of you are familiar. Money is raised for worthwhile projects in the community, such as the School Library, the Retarded Children's School, any emergency which may arise due to hardship among families, and many other projects. Once a year when the turmoil of the bazaar has died down, the girls spend an evening on the town having dinner at a good restaurant, and taking in a show afterwards. We would be glad to provide transportation and arrange for a me -Aber to introduce you on your first visit to the Club. Just call any member of the executive listed below, and she will make the arrangements for you. We would point out that we are neither a political nor a religious organization.
