Officers for the coming year will be elected. First the central committee of twelve will be chosen. From their number a President, Vice- Pres., Secretary and Treasurer will be voted on. Those standing for office must be paid -up members of the Assn., but all residents are entitled to vote. Nominees must have expressed their willingness to stand, so if someone youwish to nominate cannot be present, be sure you have secured his consent in advance. It is desirable to have every section of our Community represented. Make sure YOUR street has a candidate in the running. Elections will be the chief item of business, but sewers, taxes, recreation facilities, dogs ( !) , roads, etc. will inevitably liven up the proceedings. New -comers are especially urged to come out on Wednesday. Our Association was founded nine ye&rs ago "to guard the interests oX the ratepayers, and to promote neighbourliness in the community." It has played a vital role in shaping the development of West Rouge, and it is important that it Continue to do so. Do your bit to see that we heve a strong executive for 1960-61; SUNDAY GASOLINE PLAN Our three gasoline stations are co-operating in arranging to have only orre et at i on -open earch Sunday during the summer months. The boys will have a few well-earned free Sundays by taking turns staying open for the convenience of motorists in the Community. GOT YOUR GARDEN CHAIRS? You can help the service projects of our local Kiwanis Club; Be an arm -chair philanthropist! VOL. 1, N0, 5 Jane 11, 1960 Editorial Staff Dick Jolliffe Stan Frost Jim Pownall Tom 11cKay Ann Henson LO SE S LEG IN ROCK -SLIDE Parents in Nest Rouge would be well advised to caution their children against venturing near the large rocks that the C.N.R. has dumped along the railway embankment by the lake. A Toronto man lost a leg last week when he was trapped there in a rock -slide. Heroes of the unfortunate accident were Don Dand and Leonard Ferguson of West Rouge who freed the victim at consider- able personal risk. We suggest the Railway has some responsibility to correct this danger spot. TENi1I S COURTS Grace Presbyterian Church of Jest Rouge has approached the Township Recreation Comriittee regarding the poa=ibility of township assistance in building tennis courts on the church property behind Rouge Highlands. A curbed black -top area, could serve the triple purpose of double court, a roller-skating rink, and a natural -ice rink in winter. The proposed facilities would be open to all residents. SCHOOL ADLING GYMNATORIUM Despite some opposition from Council tenders for construction of a 45x70 gymnatorium at West Rouge School have been called, and it is expected that it will be ready in September. It is to be located in the U shaped court on the north side of the school so three of the walls are already up. COUNCILLOR LaYCOX REPORTS For a full report on current town- ship affairs affecting West Rouge, see Cliff Laycoxl letter in this issue; We would suggest that you read it before corning to the Open Meeting on Wednesday. 'we expect that both Cliff and Reeve Sherman Scott will be there to answer your further questions. Don't forget to attend the open meeting of the West Rouge Comi°unity Association on June 15th.. If you have any beefs about how the id.R.C.A. has been run this past 12 months, here is your chance t- speak your mind. Judging from a sneak preview , of the Treasurer's Re- ort, the executive this year will have more money in the bank than what was left to them at the start -of the year-.• A project the W.R.C.A. could inves- tigate next year is the possibility of .;est Rouge forming their own Public Utilities Commission in an effort to lower the Hydro rates - and maybe the water rates too. A REPORT TO THE RATEPAYERS OF WEST ROUGE I have endeavoured to set out below all matters of interest, matters .which directly concern the residents of Hest Rouge and to keep you up to date on what is happening in the Council Chamber at The Municipal Building in Brougham Many road and drainage problems have arisen ,due to the long; wet season and these problems have taken precedence over many other equally important but less expedient matters. I believe that you will agree with me when 1 say that a fine job has been done by the Roads Department in spite of the fact that the department consists of a Superintendant, a Foreman and five other personnel who _have hundreds of miles of reads in our Township to maintain and re build. You may rest assured that if your complaints have not already bsen taken care of - that you have not been forgotten and that somethirij, will be done as speedily as possible, barring more inclement weather. The biggest single and most interesting factor .which 1 am sure that you would like a report on is S E V7 E R S and or P A V E D R 0 A D S. On the evening of![lay30th 1 presented to Council a brief on these two items. I explained to Council that if sewers could not be installed in the forseeable future that I would press for hard surfaced roads in the whole of Chesterhill and Rouge Highland Subdivisions, -please bear in mind that you would not have been burdened with an extra tax load if this project had been.done, - held in trust for this work is approx. $30.000.00 which was turned over to the Township by the sub- dividers. Members of Council considered my proposal for some time that evening and it was decided and agreed that it is concievabie that sewers could be installed in the Vlest Rouge in.from 12 to 18 months, and on thestrength of this information 1 have again decided to fofjego spending your money needlessly only to be torn up shortly. A surface .treatment is to be applied to the roads to lay the dust and it is possible that this job will have.been completed before you read this article. lmmediately following the sewer job you shall have macadam surfaced roads. t Much talk has been bandied about in regard to the installation of street lights in the area not yet serviced, this project in terms of dollars is a fairly costly undertaking but certainly not prohibitive, if the majority feel that street lighting is required and it is your wish to assume the cost, I shall take steps on your behalf to,see that it is done. By now you will have received your Tax Bills for the current year, please let me remind you not to be to hasty in condemning your sitting Council for the increase which appears. Study the reverse side of your bill, here you ma- y compare your 1959 taxes with those of 1960, you will find that 99% of your .increase is due to inflated school_costs and over which your Council have no control. -- - - - - - - - - - - - -— - -- (continued on next vrre) FERGUSON BENCH INTERIhL ESSO SERVICE Rouge ?ills Drive Sales & Rentals of New & Used BOATS & CANOES Authorized a€;ent for Peterborough Boats COFFEE SHOP Prop. - Russ Fer,uson Island Rd. & East Ave. AT 4 - 4281 CLkSS "k" 'CECHAiIC Tune-up and L raise Specialists DON WEARN ROGER HARRISON I have recently received authorization from the School Board o to in und cipation of a better commence the grading and levelling of the West Rouge Playgr'The antithan ever sports programme this year. work will be done by the Roads Dept. and is not considered to be ew more important than road work so that we may have to wait for a flike- days yet, however it will be done in the not to di stanatf the corners wise it is my intention to have the Tovm ship property of Kirkdene and East Ave graded for use as a parkette and possibly a community Horticultural area..
