Page 1. -2 - 50% VOTE IN WEST ROUGE A MESSAGE FROM THE REVE West Rouge made its voice felt in the recent municipal election as more than half of those eligible to vote took the trouble to do so, as against a 17% turn -out last year. The "get -out -the -vote" campaign led by the Kiwanis Club, the excellent election meeting sponsored by the Community Assn., and the publication of our Bulletin shortly before the election all helped to stimulate public interest. Congratulations to Cliff Laycox of Friendship Ave. for his success on his first attempt: We'll be watching breathlessly for those street signs by the end of Jan: These are the election results: Reeve - Sherman Scott (a.ccl.) Dep . Reeve - R . Hawthorne 13 7 J . Macpherson 999 Councillor - Cliff Laycox 564 (Ward 5) - Miss V. Swan 200 West Rouge is also well represented on the 1960 School Board for Area #2. Of the five members these three live in West Rouge: Fred Hunt, Ted Ryan, and Ed Harley. High School Board members are appointed by Coun- cil. We have been represented by Don Macpherson whose term has just expired. His re -appointment was re- cently blocked in a "down with West Rouge re- cently at Council, but we are hopeful that the new Council, will see fit to re -appoint him. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR This space was reserved for your letter, dear reader, but it seems to have been lost in the Christmas rush. We can only conclude that no one in West Rouge has any complaints until the tax bills come out anyway. WEST ROUGE POST OFFICE "Stamps, money orders, Unemployment insurance stamps" now open in CHESTERHILL VARIETY & HARDWARE "Your Community Store" At. 2 -3704 This year of 196o should be an eventful and busy year in Pickering Township. Some steps were taken in 1959 which will begin to make their impact felt on the Township during 1960. It would seem apparent that the development around Frenchman's Bay will become an actual fact this year. The developers are picking up their options on the land and engineers and surveyors are on the land and on the location. By early spring, there should be a great deal of activity in the area. This will mean the immediate start of not only the development itself but an immediate start on the sewage system and the water plant. The Ontario Water Resources Commission has approved of the loc- ation of the sewage plant in the West Rouge and, providing that the Ontario Municipal Board approves and that financing can be arranged, this project should get under way this year. The availability of sewer" will also make it feasible for some further development in West Rouge and it would appear that the Rougedale Subdivision between East Ave. and the Pick- ering -Scarborough line will go ahead. IS YOUR NUMBER UP? Many homes in West Rouge are still without house numbers, and some arg still marked with the or- iginal `lot number', adding to the confusion. Let's give the delive ry men and visitors a. break and get our numbers up. If you aren't sure what your number is you can find it on your assessment notice, or phone the Touiham townshi offices . From the first ball to the season's end they run their own show. They make out the score sheets, collect money, mark score. They ask for help only when they need it badly. This maturity shows in their bowling scores. During the fall of 1959 the following boys and girls bowled over 200 flat (no handicap): Craig Hilborn, Pauline LLoyd, Wanda Lord, Len Hart, Francis Faker, Teresa Wright, Glen Hart, Bob Brown, Bev. Smith, Steve Jones, Mary Adams, Paul Sloan, arbara canton, Mary 'Edwards, Bill Rycroft, Ron Toye, Don Carter, Murray Toye, John Scott, Brian Ka.skiw, Bruce Craig, Mike Henderson, Allen Fraser, Jim Lennox. Of si-ecial note are games by Bob Brown (356) & Teresa Wright (275). Ken Tanghe bowled 8 games over 200. We certainly have no cause for concern about the bowling future of Canadians. We also have no reason to question the natural sportsmanship bred into these young adults. NO NEGJ NAME YET FOR 11BULLETIN" In our first issue we invited suggestions for a better name for our paper. Eight turkeys and eight chickens were won by 16 high -scoring (with handicap) bowlers -- half were vromen. Bowling in this league has become a. very popular pastime for the men and women of West Rouge and has gone e long wpv towards helping to cement us into a closely -knit com.unity. The four top teems of the first series are S. 'duck, H. Wardell, C. Ballagh, and D. Kaskiw (Cartains They will go into the Class "A" playoffs against the top 4 teams at the end of the season. In addition to receiving a banquet at the end of the year there are many trophies given for various accomplishments. One of the most treasured is the Ford Sawden Trophy given for the most improved bowler of the year. W.R.H.A. Had the civic minded gentlemen, such as Cliff Brandt, Ernie Head, Cliff Ballagh and Cliff Laycox, to name a few, had they not organ- ized this Association, the talent that these boys possess would have lain dormant. Of course the prime purpose of the Assn. is not to seek out and develop super -stars -- but rather to give the children of the commun- ity something to do. If, however, by doing so, the boys become rroficient at the came of hockey, then all the better. As a matter of fact, the executive of the Association has been keeping a record of every boy's clay to date. The leas'ue hopes to affiliate with the C.A.H.A. next year and keeping records is a prerequisite. The men have ke t the safety of the boys up-ermost in their .Minds. One of them is in charge of the dressing room each night and he checks each boy to make sure his skates and equipment are on correctly and to make sure he is warmly dressed.
