vte PICKMAPERING ��, • C•� 4r t� MUNICIPAL BUILDING —Pickering, Ontario no ic%tering Pickering Township is located in Ontario County, immediately east of Metropolitan Tor- onto, in the Province of Ontario. The Township encompasses 68,535 acres, extends from Lake Ontario approximately 15 miles north, and has a population of 30,600. Because of its prox- imity to Metropolitan Toronto and the fine transportation facilities, it has become a most desirable area for the location of new industry. The Township also boasts some of the finest farmlands in Ontario. MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT The Township is governed by a Township Council consisting of a Reeve, Deputy Reeve and five Councillors, each Councillor represent- ing one Ward. The Council is elected for a term of two years. The day-to-day operation of the Municipality is the responsibility of a perman- ent staff of 140, under the direction of a number of department heads who report to the elected officials. The Engineer is in charge of all public utilities and building permits, plans, water and sewage services, and all drainage and sanitation services; he also assists with subdivision plans. The Roads Department is operated by a Road Superintendent, with a staff of 21 men who maintain 236 miles of roads. The Town- ship owns two gravel pits, has a fleet of trucks, maintenance staff, and eight snowplows for snow removal. One of the Township's most active com- mittees is the Planning Board, composed of seven members, including two Councillors. This Board, with the assistance of a Planning Con- sultant, decides zoning by-laws in order that the land in the Township can be best utilized. To ensure the development of a desirable community, the Township has passed certain restrictions on residential buildings, which have been in effect since 1965. Requirements in effect prevent unplan- ned housing from proceeding, zoning by-laws have been passed for the whole Township, and anyone wishing to subdivide or begin a residen- tial or commercial development must secure permission from the Township's Planning Board which consults with the Ontario Municipal Board, Department of Municipal Affairs, and the Metropolitan Toronto Planning Board. The area is also serviced by three major highways, including the Trans Canada. Both CN and CP Railways pass through the Township. This area also has Great Lakes and Ocean shipping facilities in both Oshawa and Toronto. Pickering Township is the eastern terminus for the "GO Train," the most efficient and luxurious commuter service in Ontario. The trains travel regularly between Pickering in the east, through downtown Toronto, to Oakville in the west. COMMUNITY LIFE Pickering Township offers its residents the best of two worlds, relaxed suburban living near lakes and forests free from smog and pollu- tion, while only minutes away from Canada's most bustling metropolitan area. The com- munity has churches representing all denomin- ations, 21 elementary schools, 3 high schools, an ultra -modern hospital and four modern nursing homes. The recreational facilities are numerous, including six golf courses, swim- ming, boating, curling and skiing. The Township has a modern police office at Dunbarton, staffed by 27 policemen and 3 office employees. The Chief is responsible to a Police Commission, composed of the Reeve, the County Judge and County Magistrate. The Township is divided into six fire areas, operated by fourteen full-time firemen, assisted by a number of volunteer firemen, with a full-time Chief and Deputy Chief. All areas have modern equipment. EDUCATION There are approximately 9,000 elem- entary and 3,000 secondary pupils attending school in the Township. The elementary stud- ents are accommodated in a variety of schools, ranging in size from three-room schools in the sparsely populated area of the Township, to 30-room ultra -modern schools in the more densely populated southern section of the Township. All schools are well equipped and offer a variety of new programmes, such as conversational French, extended library service, special education classes for those children with learning disabilities, outdoor environmental sci- ence programmes, and formal reading at the kindergarten level. Individual schools are en- couraged to try out new ideas and methods in a continuing effort to stimulate the learning pro- cess of their students. The Aldon School for the Mentally Re- tarded, situated in the Town of Ajax, serves the Township. A new, special vocational school opened in 1971 and services all the Township. Many schools have what is termed "Major Achievement Classes." Students are permitted to advance at an accelerated rate taking subjects at the secondary level while still enrolled in the elementary schools. Y GENERAL HOSPITAL —Located in Ajax, Ontario NUCLEAR POWER The advent of nuclear -electric power in Ontario has been compared to the finding of a dozen new N iagaras. Even Niagara Falls, source and symbol of power, multiplied tenfold, would not equal the promise of natural uranium. For half a century, rivers powered Ontario's economic and social development through ever -advancing technol- ogy. Man uses the abundance of Ontario's rivers, but little more can economically come from them; now the new technology can bring power almost beyond limit from another re- source plentiful in Ontario — natural uranium. Pickering, the site of Ontario's third nuclear -electric plant provides electricity at costs competitive with, or cheaper than, the coal-fired plants now used to supplement river resources. Its capacity of more than two million kilowatts from four units is equal to the needs of about 1.7 million homes —more than twice as much as Hydro's share of the St. Lawrence power project. It has commanded global attention as one of the world's largest nuclear power plants and as a tribute to Canadian technology. Not only does the Pickering plant herald the era of low-cost power from the atom, but it represents a major step in developing a new Canadian nuclear industry with great potential for export —an industry which may well hold the eventual source of power for all of Canada. HARWOOD PLACE —(Shopping Centre) Ajax, Ontario fax On September 10, 1939, the present site of the Town of Ajax was a peaceful rolling farmland nestled on the edge of Lake Ontario in Pickering Township. All this was to change very quickly. In 1941, this farmland became the site of Defence Industries Limited (D.I.L.), Pickering Works. Thus began a vast shell filling plant which, before 1945, had filled 40,000,000 shells; employed over 9,000 people at peak produc- tion; boasted of its own water and sewage treatment plants; had a school population of over 600; had 30 miles of railroad and 30 miles of roads. The entire D.I.L. plant site included some 2,846 acres. In 1945, World War II ended. But not Ajax. Many people who worked or lived in Ajax during D.I.L. days wanted to remain here. Due largely to the vision of George W. Finley of Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Ajax became a planned modern community using the war time base for its post-war found- ation. Post-war Ajax began its growth. This enormous burgeoning war plant com- munity needed a name. The name was supplied by a distant British naval victory. From Dec- ember 13 to December 19, 1939, a flotilla of British warships - H.M.S. Ajax, H.M.S. Exeter, OXFORD TOWERS APARTMENTS —Ajax, Ontario and H.M.S. Achilles -- commanded by Com- modore Henry H. Harwood engaged and routed the powerful German Pocket Battleship, Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate. Ajax was chosen as the name of this war born com- munity. Industry and people came from every- where to take advantage of the many assets of Ajax -- its schools, its churches, its hospital, its steam plant, its water and sewage treatment plants, its comprehensive planning, its geogra- phy -- close to Toronto but not part of it -- and its friendly, industrious, involved citizens. The growth of Ajax is a modern phen- omenon. By 1945, there were 617 houses, all except a very few, north of 401. By 1971, the houses extend to the shores of Lake Ontario. In 1945, after the closing of D.I.L., there were no industries in Ajax. By 1971, Ajax has eighty- one industries of all sizes and kinds. Settlement began at the harbor as early as 1819 and the town served for many years as a major port for the produce of the county and surrounding area. On January 1, 1968, the Town of Whitby amalgamated with Whitby Township to form the new Town of Whitby, a municipality of 56 square miles which includes the hamlets of Brooklin, Myrtle, Myrtle Station and Ashburn. The boundaries established in 1968 will be maintained under regional government. New subdivisions are expected to double Whitby's population in about five years. HISTORIC SITES Whitby has many historical sites, including the Ontario Ladies' College, which celebrates its centennial in 1974. It is well- known for its distinctive architecture. Another building of interest is St. John's Anglican Church at Port Whitby which was built of lime- stone shipped as ballast from Kingston in sailing vessels. One of the last operating flour mills in Ontario may be seen in Brooklin, and the boyhood home of Hamar Viscount Green- wood, last chief secretary for Ireland, still stands in Whitby. The Lynde House, a relic of the War of 1812 serves as a museum for the town. INDUSTRY Whitby has many fine industrial sites includ- ing an industrial park for secondary industry. now nearly filled, and large tracts of land des- tined for industrial use. Among the town's largest industries are Dunlop Canada Ltd., Lake Ontario Steel, Sklar Furniture Ltd., Dupont of Canada Ltd. and Consolidated Bathurst. INDUSTRIAL MALL —Whitby, Ontario Much of the land is serviced, and is close to major highways and rail transportation. Among the developments in the industrial park are two multi -tenant malls, one of which is partially occupied with a third phase under way, and the other soon to be completed. GENERAL HOSPITAL —Located in Whitby, Ontario HOSPITALS The Whitby Psychiatric Hospital has been the town's largest employer since it was esta- blished 60 years ago. The fire department, with three halls, is made up of full-time and part-time staff. It stood second for all Canada and second for Ontario in its population category in the National Fire Pro- tection Association's 1972 fire prevention con- test. SERVICE CLUBS Whitby has many active community organ- izations, among which are the Rotary, Kins- men, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs and Knights of Columbus. TRANSPORTATION Downtown Whitby is located at the junction of Highways 2 and 12, with Highway 12 being a main artery to the cottage country to the north. Highway 7 joins Highway 12 at Brooklin and follows the route to the north. South of the downtown area, there is the junction of Highway 12 with the Macdonald -Cartier Free- way. Whitby is also served by the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific main lines which pass through the town. COUNTY TOWN CARNIVAL Whitby's main attraction is the annual County Town Carnival held on the August civic holiday weekend, with a great variety of events and games. RECREATION A new arena was constructed in Brooklin in 1972, and another arena will be built on a 47-acre site known as Iroquois Park in 1973. A public subscription campaign is being con- ducted to add an indoor swimming pool to the Iroquois Park facilities by 1974. LIBRARY The Whitby Public Library will move to new quarters for the first time in 60 years in 1973, taking up the basement of the town hall. The Library, established in 1852 as one of the first in the province, operates branches in Whitby and Brooklin. radio1390 The Dr. J. O. Ruddy General Hospital is a 100 bed facility opened in 1970, which can be expanded when the need arises. It is located adjacent to the psychiatric hospital so both institutions can share facilities. The town also has a flourishing art gallery in a 70-year-old railway station which has been restored to the period. This rapid build-up of new industry and commercial retail develop- ment has been spurred by the deepening of the Oshawa harbour to accommodate ocean vessels and a new international airport being planned just minutes away from the north-west bound- aries of the City. Oshawa is considered one of the fastest growing and most progressive communities in Canada and has many of the amenities offered by larger communities, including excellent facil- ities and services to provide for the education- al, religious, cultural and recreational needs of all its citizens. Bowmanville has everything you need for good, clean living with the great outdoors just beyond your back yard. Major centres are only a few miles away. Conservation Areas, The Great Pine Ridge Tourist Area, Mosport Park and other outdoor features are all just minutes from the centre of town.
