When Mary Ida Todd was 6 months old, because her mother was not well and had
5 older children to care for, she went to live with her mother's brother, Nelson Wagg and
his family in Claremont, Ontario.
Nelson and Mary "Minnie" Wagg had 2 daughters, Mable - 17 yrs. and Mary - 13
yrs. They nicknamed baby Mary `Billee', Billee attended school in Claremont, playing
on a baseball team in the summer, and attended Claremont Baptist Church.
Mable married Alex Morgan and had a daughter, Evelyn. They adopted a
daughter, Marti and a son Jim.
Mary trained for a Registered Nurse at Riverdale Hospital in Toronto, graduating
in approximately 1933 and going to Detroit to work in a small cottage hospital there.
Billee worked at a War Plant in Ajax before moving to Gross Point, Michigan to
work from October, 1943 - November, 1945 at a small cottage hospital (2 floors) as a
nurses aid where her cousin Mary worked as a supervisor. She lived in Nurses
Residence.
Billee moved to Sarnia in November, 1945 to go to Sarnia Business College
(corner of Christina and Lochiel Streets). After graduating she worked at Legitts
Drugstore on Christina Street and also for lawyers, Cowan and Millman. In January,
1948 she began working at CPR Telecommunications where she met Tom Burton.
Billee and Tom were married on April 30, 1949. When Tom was transferred to
Toronto they lived in an apartment and later in a house in Toronto. Son Tom was born in
December, 1949, son Robert in February 1951, daughter, Janet in January, 1952, son,
Ken in February, 1954 and son, Danny in August 1955. Shortly after Danny was born
Billee and Tom separated. The children stayed with their father and Billee returned to
Sarnia where her cousins Mable and Mary were living. She began working at St.
Joseph's Hospital as a Nurses Assistant in the Nursery and Kids ward where she
continued to work until 1980 when she took a disability pension.
