RICHARD S. HODGINS
The death of Richard S. Hodgins
in a motor accidenton August 13, 1963
was a great loss to the staff and stu-
dents of the Pickering district High
School and to the whole teachingpro-
fession. The affection and respect in
w h i c h Mr. Hodgins was held was TF
shown by the number of people from
the staff and student body who went
to Lucan for the funeral services and
burial in the over a century old
Anglican cemetery north of Lucan.
Dick Hodgins went to High School.
in Lucan and London and entered the
University of Western Ontario when
he was sixteen. He graduated with
honours in English, and from there
he went to the Ontario College of Ed-
ucation. During the time he was at
Western and OCE, he was a member of the Officers' Training Course.
He graduated from OCE in the spring of 1942, and on June 5 of that year
he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Here he was stationed at La-
chine, Bella Bella, Collins Bay and Blaine, Washington working with radar
and crash boats. He was in the Air Force until October, 1945.
Mr. Hodgins taught in Geraldton, Burlington, Ridgetown and Brantford
before coming to P i c k e r i n g. A little surprise which awaited him in
G e r a 1 d t o n was the teaching of Girls' Physical Education, and he told
amusing stories about this. He was an accomplished pianist. He had
played with a band in Lucan, and he played with the Lions' Club in Ridge -
town. He taught with Miss Ballance in Burlington, and it was she who
persuaded him to come to Pickering as Head of the English department.
An outstanding student, a loyal friend, and a skilful teacher who gave
unstintingly of himself, Richard Hodgins' memory will always be a part
of the Pickering High School. Evidence of this was given when a plaque
to his m e m o r y was p l a c e d in the school and a fund raised to give a
scholarship in his name.

O CANADA
YOU ARE INVITED TO INSPECT THE NEW
BUILDING AFTER THE OPENING CEREMONY
Mr. Lewis Briggs, Principal of the Pickering District High School; Mr. A. Ross Irwin,
Chairman of the Pickering District High School Board and Dr. W.J. Dunlop, Minister
of Education.
Remarks made by Mr. A. Ross Irwin at the School Opening
It is an honour and privilege for me this afternoon to welcome you all
on this occasion, the official opening of this grand new building, Pickering
District High School. A great transformation has taken place in this dis-
trict since 1949. The centralization of the secondary school of education
under one roof for the Township of Pickering and the Improvement Dis-
trict of Ajax has been achieved. For those more directly connected with
this progress , the sense of satisfaction of accomplishment is a just re-
ward and should perhaps repay in some small part for the privilege of
citizenship in this free country of ours. This building and its features
have been well described on numerous occasions by the press, and our
p r o g r a m now to follow consists of well qualified speakers; some, no
doubt, you have already known. At this point, I will introduce the Honour-
able Doctor Dunlop.

In this, its seventeenth year, Pickering High School looks back
with pride at the fine traditions it has built. In the few brief
glimpses provided in this Centennial booklet, we are providing
Pickering's graduates with many fine memories.

Philip Richardson
The History of the Pickering High School has been the Centen-
nial project of the school and has been sponsored by the
Students' Council.
The High School Board of the Township of Pickering was formed in 1949 and became
the Pickering District High School Board in 1951. The Pickering District High School
was opened in September of 1951 with sixteen rooms and an enrolment of four hundred
and eighteen students.
From this school, even in the sixteen years that it has been open, have gone men and
women who have made their mark in the world. The number of graduates of this school
who have gone on to other institutions of learning is a very high one indeed and makes a
record equaled by very few Communities. More will be heard from these people as time
goes on for we must remember that they are still young; all in their twenties or thirties.
The need for the Pickering High School was great. Before its opening the young
people of high school age had gone to the Claremont Continuation School, other schools
at some distance or Scarborough. The people of Pickering, however, were ambitious
and education -minded, and they wanted their own school.
There were growing pains of course, but the calibre of student going to school
throughout the years was high and still is. The school always reflects the Community
and perhaps nowhere more than in Pickering. The Community had built a fine school;
the members of the Board of Education spared no effort in securing an able Administra-
tion and teaching staff. As a result, through the years the school became known for its
academic and athletic prowess. Athletic championships were won regularly, and the
number of students winning Ontario Scholarships was far out of proportion to the size of
the school.
The community grew, and Pickering District High School became the parent school.
Several of its teachers went to staff the new high school in Ajax in 1956 and in Dunbarton
in 1961. Closeness in ambition and thought was maintained however, and in 1964 Mr.
J.C. Richardson, the Principal of the Pickering District High School, became Super-
intendent of the three schools. This happy appointment has resulted in a high standard
of education in the three schools and closer community feeling.
The Pickering school itself added seven rooms in 1952 and two more in 1962. Then
in 1966 a new wing of thirty-four rooms was added bringing the total to fifty-nine rooms
and the student enrolment to over twelve hundred. In 1967 there are seventy-four
teachers on the staff. The 'anew" school was officially opened by the Honourable William
G. Davis, Minister of Education on October 14, 1966.

Beverley Falby, the first Valedictorian of the school, graduated in Commerce
and Finance from Victoria University. She taught for five years at Bathurst
Heights College and at summer school at the College of Education. In proposing
the toast at her wedding, Mr. William Parish called her the first graduate. He
explained this by pointing out that she hadthe highest percentage in the class and
was the winner of the Carter Scholarship. Beverley, now Mrs. John Selby, lives
in Don Mills and has two children, Victor, four and Margaret, one and a half.
In her Valedictory Beverley pointed out that the Grade XIII Graduates of 1952
had been together only one year since they had come from different schools to
Pickering, but that they had all co-operated and ended up doing the same things
and had enjoyed themselves very much.
Carolyn Smith, the first All Round girl in the Pickering District High School
was a track and field champion and a member of the Senior Choir. She also had
the highest academic standing in her year in Grade XII. Carolyn received her
R.N. from West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Ill., and her B.Sc. from Wheaton
College, Ill. She has nursed in Rochester, Ajax, Oshawa, New York City, Jackson
City and at the present time is nursing part time in East Lansing, Mich. where
her husband is working on his doctorate. She has two children Karen, five and
Kevin, two and a half.
Joe Pegg 1952
Joe took part in a great number of activities. Some of these were Drama,
Music and Sports such as track, badminton and gymnastics. He enjoyed the
Choir and Student Parliament also. Joe was married in 1959 and is now the
proud father of Diana (41/2) and John (4 mos.). He works as the Superintendent
of Quality of Control for General Motors Trim Ltd. Joe feels that his extra
curricular activities helped in the forming of likes, dislikes, and attitudes. He
told me that the habits established in High School will usually carry through
University. Study habits and striving to be the best are two such examples.

Ralph Robertson was used to a high academic standing and leading his class. He was also a member
of the Senior Choir and Prime Minister in the Student Government. In his Valedictory, Ralph pointed out
that the Jesuit Fathers opened Upper Canada's first school less than six miles from Pickering. He also
said, "Thus the door closes upon a part of our lives and we enter a wider phase. We are stepping into a
world which promises the best of things and the worst of things -- the best of things in material comfort
brought about by great men; the worst of things in destruction and desolation if the world's new-found
power is unleashed in wrong directions. Shall we embark upon the sea of life with our education alone to
guide us? No, we need more than that. Our nation was pioneered by God-fearing men who had a deep and
vital faith in their Creator." Today Mr. Robertson is a teacher in the Ajax High School.
Irene Porter was All Round Girl for many reasons. She stood first in the Special Commercial class;
she was captain of the Senior Girl's basketball team, and she participated in cheerleading, badminton,
volleyball, gymnastics and track and field. After she graduated from the Pickering High School, she worked
at Johns-Mansville for eleven years. Today she is Mrs, R.A. Doak and the mother of John aged two. She
is also taking Grade XIII subjects by correspondence and intends to become a teacher,
William McKee, the All Round Boy of 1954, received Leader bars in 1952 and 1954. That he well
deserved these was shown by his activities. He participated in the Hobby Club, the Student Parliament,
drama, basketball, football and softball. He also collected bars in social studies, science, industrial arts,
Physical Education and Mathematics.
This year, the first yearbook was published with the aid of the memory of local citizens, Mrs. Frank
Chapman, Mr. William Murkar and Dr. Nelson Tomlinson. Various clubs included the Press Club, Student
Parliament, Projectionists, Reading, Library, Typing, Business, Home Economics, Hobby Crafts, Junior
and Senior Choirs, Square Dancing and Languages. The social event of the year was the "April Reign",
the well -attended school formal. Awards were many. The Drama Club under Mr. Jolliffe won the Collegiate
Drama Festival while Ken Chafen won the award for the best actor and Alex Eftimoff was cited for an out-
standing performance. Pat Shipton won the Verse Speaking Competition of the Ontario Educational Associa-
tion, and the Junior Basketball Team won the Boys' Lakeshore Group Championship.

Dennis Togerson Anna Carol Philip John Newell
Valedictorian All Round Girl All Round Boy
Dennis Togerson was sixteen when he graduated from High School and gave the Valedictory Address. He
graduated with a $500.00 University Award and prizes for his standing and French. In his Valedictory he
quoted Franklin in this vital thought, "If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away
from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." Dennis wished his classmates
happiness and satisfaction in their chosen careers and God's blessing and guidance on life's journey. After
graduating from Pickering, Dennis worked for a year and then went to the General Motors Institute at Flint,
Michigan. Here he was Editor of the school newspaper, President of the Fraternity, first Vice -President
of the Student Executive and a member of Robots, an honorary society recognizing outstanding extra-
curricular activity. He became a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and is now General Supervisor of
Quality Control, Truck Assembly, at General Motors, Oshawa. He was also Director of General Motors
Dale Carnegie Course in 1964 and 1965. At the present time he is attending evening classes at York Uni-
versity studying for his Master's Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Togerson is married to the
former Miss Donna Jones, and they have two children, Denise two and Brenda four months.
Anna Carol Philip won academicbars in French, Latin and Mathematics. She was a member of the Choir
and played senior basketball. She also won a Junior Leaders' Club bar and bars for orchestra and music.
Since January, 1957 she has been working in the Parts Prices Department of General Motors in Oshawa.
She is now Mrs. Robert Spenceley, and she and her husband have a small farm where they keep horses. They
show these horses and enjoy riding.
John Newell was certainly an all round student. He received academic bars in almost every subject,
played football and basketball, took part in drama and the student parliament and besides these activities
found time to sing in the Senior Choir. After Pickering High, John received his B.Sc. from McGill, spent
some time in England and is now in the food business with his father in Pickering Township. He is married
and has two children, Clare three, and Peter five months.
Mr. Jolliffe's production of Julius Caesar made the finals in the Collegiate Drama Festival, and in athletics
these records were set:

A Queen's University Scholarship of $800.00 was just one of the
awards made to George Pike in his graduating year. He had an average
of 83%, won $1060, in academic prizes, and in spite of this had found
time to be President of the Students' Council and a member of the Senior
Choir, He played Cassius in the Julius Caesar directed by Mr. Jolliffe,
and he feels that this gave him his start in one of his main interests. He
was President of the Drama Guild at Queen's and in his final year
played the lead in King Lear, After George graduated in Mathematics
and Physics from Queen's, he became a Systems Engineer at IBM, and
he has been there since. He has been marketing programming systems
and has had a great deal to do with the life insurance industry. At the
present time he is attending the Systems Research Institute in New York.
George Pike
Valedictorian
Kay loved high school and all its activities. She served on the Stu-
dents' Council and was the Collegiate Club representative, She par-
ticipated in basketball and volleyball, The Drama Club and the Choir
were two of Kay's other activities. Four years ago Miss Miller was
with a kindergarten. She was married in1961 and is now Mrs. Kenning-
ton, a housewife with two children, Jennifer 4, and Carolyn, 2, Kay
enjoyed High School thoroughly, She feels today that the staff -teacher
relationship gave her something to look back on. It gave her confidence
and a background basis for a broad outlook. (by Kathy Collins)

All Round Girl
Keith Norton received his Honour Letter and the All Round Boy
award after his Grade XII year, He was a member of the Choir, the
Inter School Christian Fellowship Society, the Interschool Track Record
Relay Team, and he played football. He also received academic bars
in almost every subject, and it is interesting to note that Keith had
perfect attendance in two of his years at the Pickering District High
School, After graduation from Pickering, Keith went to Queen's
University, received his B.A. degree and taught at Anderson Collegiate
and Vocational Institute in Whitby for five years. From 1963 to 1965
he served as Vice -President of the Young Progressive Conservative
Association of Ontario. He is now studying law at Queen's University,

In 1959. Garnet Watchorn was both Valedictorian
and All Round Boy, two high honours. In his Vale-
dictory, he pointed out, "This country needs leader-
ship more than ever before if we are to preserve our
inherited freedom. Let us not take freedom for
granted, thus turning it into a negative thing. If we
deny our free men's responsibility in being silent
in the face of some injustice or fall in love with
security, we are not maintaining that eternal vigilance
that is the price of liberty. Let us not be a people
that has fallen asleep at the wheel, but let us be able to
say, 'I am a part of Canada.' It is a certainty we won't
all be leaders, but we must all give the best in our-
selves," After Pickering, Garnet received an honours
B.Sc. in 1963 and his Master of Business Administra-
tion in 1965, both from the University of Toronto. At
the present time, he is Project Analyst for Comino
Ltd., Montreal, He is married to Irene Wagenaar, and
they have a girl two months old. Garnet feels that the
most important facet of his high school education was
the extra -curricular activity. This provided the
opportunity to assume initiative, responsibility and
leadership. He also paid tribute to the career guidance
he had received at Pickering,
Joan Lumley, the All Round Girl made a practice
of having good marks. She won bars in mathematics,
home economics, science and French, and in her Grade
XM year, she won the Latin prize, She enjoyed
volleyball and other school activities. Perhaps, how-
ever, her greatest contribution to school life was her
cheerfulness and happy disposition,

All Round Boy; Gordon Stewart, George Shula.
Eva Hasek, Valedictorian and All Round Girl, participated in most of the school activities and the Stu-
dents' Council. She recalls locking another girl in the English room cupboard. The teacher did not notice
anything amiss and would not have known that a student was missing if the student had not rapped to be let
out. The teacher was quite angry because the English projects were crushed and flattened, (by Kathy Collins)
In her Valedictory, Eva referred to the high points her class had known and their first relationships
with their teachers ranging from indifference to war. However, by graduation teachers were friends, and
Eva spoke of thanking them by living up to the principles they had taught the students. She also paid tribute
to the parents who had offered encouragement, shown infinite patience and taken an active interest in their
activities. She closed by pointing out, "To remain static is merely one step from decay,"
After Pickering, Eva took an Honours Course in Languages at the University of Toronto, spent one
summer in France, taught French and Physical Education at West Hill Collegiate and is now teaching for
two years in Germany.
John Webster, the All Round Boy, played basketball and badminton and was President of the Students'
Council. Alongwith these activities, he made good marks. A capable student, John is now a capable teacher.
This was a big year in drama, "The Pigeon with the Silver Foot", directed by Mr. LeQuesne and
starring Norma Cartwright won the Collegiate Festival, Norma also received the award for Best Actress.

Wayne Knapp Glennys Cresswell Don Hobbs
Valedictorian and All Round Girl All Round Boy
Ontario Scholar
WAYNE KNAPP, the Valedictorian and Ontario Scholar, went on to the University of Toronto where he
continued to distinguish himself. After obtaining his Master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Wayne
took a position at Deflavilland.
In his Valedictory, Wayne said, "Many are going on to institutions of higher learning, and others are
beginning their working lives. This brings forth the true meaning of Commencement. But as we proceed
through life we shall never forget Pickering, and we shall return from time to time."
Pickering High School activities saw a lot of GLENNYS CRESSWELL. For instance she served on the
Students' Council, was a member of the Basketball team and was a cheerleader and prefect. She not only
was a member of the Glee Club but also played the piano for this club. Glennys helped out by coaching
a basketball team too. Miss Cresswell was married last December to Mr. Smith and is now teaching High
School at Bloor Collegiate. (by Kathy Collins)
DON HOBBS, the All Round Boy, played football and basketball and maintained good marks. He took his
degree in Engineering at the University of Toronto and is now employed in Brampton. He was recently
married to Miss Janice Clarke, also a graduate of the Pickering High School,

GEORGE WRIGHT
At the twelfth annual Commencement Exercises, Valedictorian George Wright referred to the days
which he and his colleagues had spent at the Pickering District High School and suggested that only the
memories remained. These were fond memories more often than not, memories of a very lively class of
"dead" Latin, memories of dissections in zoology. The students of the 163 class could scarcely forsee
the changes which were soon to alter their school almost beyond recognition. Their memories were those
of a small school and a small staff. Sincere thanks were extended by George to those teachers who had
guided, coaxed and sometimes pushed the class of 163 toward that climactic night. "The teachers," he said,
"saw the first of us, and now, they see the last of us." However, in George's case, this was not true, for
after an Arts course at York University and a year in Europe, he is teaching geography at the Pickering
High School,
MARIE MITCHELL
While at high school Marie took part in many extra -curricular activities. Some of these included Basket-
ball, Volleyball, Choir, Students' Council, and the Captainship of the Prefects one year. After studying at
the University of Toronto, Marie went on to teach at Agincourt Collegiate Institute. She teaches geography
there now to grades 9, 10, and 11. Last summer Marie got married to Mr. Liddle. They now live in Bay
Ridges and Marie Liddle is still teaching at Agincourt. Marie feels that the activities and teachers at
Pickering gave her confidence and were one of the most important series of experiences in her life.
(by Kathy Collins)
DONALD DRAKE
Don was very active while in high school. Sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Soccer,
Gymnastics, and Track and Field took up most of his time. He also participated in the Glee Club and the
Music and Drama Nights. Don told me that he is now studying in a special course at the University of
Toronto. From here he hopes to go on to the Ontario College of Education and then on to teaching high
school. Don felt that all his high school teachers were great and perhaps this had some effect on his
decision to go into teaching himself, (by Kathy Collins)

Stephen Michna
All Round Boy
Steve Michna came to Pickering for Grade XI. Before that he had been an
honours student at Malvern Collegiate and had won the school letter there. At
Pickering he played Badminton and was Intermediate Champion in track and
field in 1963. He was a member of the United Nations Club, a Prefect, Boys'
Athletic Representative on the Students' Council, and he participated in "The -
Boyfriend" when the school put it on. He was also an excellent student. After gip.
Pickering, Steve went to the University of Western Ontario, and he is now in the
fourth year of an Honours Biology Course. Next summer he and another
Pickering graduate, Marilyn North, are being married, and in the fall Steve plans
to enter Graduate School at the Ph.D. level. After that, he hopes to find a
career in the teaching profession. Steve enjoyed his high school days because,
in his words, "The Staff didn't burden us with rules and regulations but rather showed us how to govern
ourselves in a civilized manner. They were concerned that we should develop our leadership and academic
potentials to the full."
While at High School Bev took part in quite a few activities. She was an active member of the Basket-
ball, Volleyball and Badminton teams. Bev sang with a special vocal group as well as the Glee Club.
She was also a member of Drama Club and was a Prefect. At the moment Bev is a nurse at the Hospital
for Sick Children. She tells me that she is hoping to join an association of nurses that involves travelling
all over the world. Beverley loved grades 11, 12, and 13. She feels it gave her a wider scope. Apparently
she originally wished to teach public school but through discussions at school she was convinced that she
should take on something a little more challenging. Now that Bev is a nurse she is working with children
as she had hoped but also is getting more out of it she feels. (by Kathy Collins)
Ian Buttars graduated from the Pickering High School with an Ontario Scholarship and the Elizabeth Ann
Highet Memorial Scholarship to Victoria College, University of Toronto. This scholarship had a value of
$150. a year and free tuition for four years, and Ian is now in his fourth year at Victoria. In his Valedictory,
Ian commented on the depressing business the graduates had to go through of re-establishing themselves
Those in University fell from the peak of being seasoned high school veterans to the level of freshmenl In
more serious vein, Ian said, 'The home is the basic and most enduring influence in our development as
mature and intelligent individuals, but the school is one of the supplementary influences in our comprehens-
ion of the world about us, of the strife within our country and of the mounting criticism of almost every
familiar institution and established tradition. There are weaknesses in our educational system, but the
combined efforts of a well qualified staff and willing students can bring about the scholastic success which
Pickering has again enjoyed this year."

Valedictorian Linda Graham Wallace Pugh
Eleanor Westney always led her class in high school, and besides this she took part in drama, debating,
Students' Council, the newspaper, public speaking and the United Nations Club. In fact, she won a United
Nations Public Speaking contest in New York and was sent to Minneapolis to speak there. She entered
Victoria College on a Moses Henry Aikens Scholarship which entitles her to $250. and free tuition for four
years.
In her Valedictory, Eleanor said, "Everywhere we see those values which have always been the guide-
post of our civilization -- morality, patriotism, and hard work -- scorned and put aside .... How well have
we been prepared to meet this massive challenge? Are we too going to sink into a spongy mass of indiffer-
ence and try to shut out all awareness that such a challenge exists? I think not. For here at Pickering we
have been given the tools we need to meet this challenge, to meet it fairly and with all our strength, which
is the highest man can achieve,"
Linda Graham, the All Round Girl, had well over 70% every year. She played volleyball, was active in
track and field and was a valued member of the Choir. Along with this she had a seriousness of attitude
toward her work, a willingness of spirit and a sense of fun that made her outstanding. She is now finishing
her nursing course at the Toronto Western Hospital,
Wallace Pugh, the All Round Boy, had first class honours throughout his high school career. He gave
valuable participation in the Cadet Corps and the Glee Club and was a capable Prefect. Along with this,
his cheerful smile and willingness made him a very popular student, From Pickering, Wallace went on to
the University of Guelph,

marry Wendy Lancaster, also an ex -Pickering student). Jim says he is glad to be out of High School but
that he felt his years at P.H.S. were the first years in which he gained great freedom as an individual,

66 - 67 Our Centennial year brought numerous activities enjoyedby all the students. There was a teacher
auction and the end results were very gratifying as the teachers became "slaves for a day" so to speak.
A Marathon Walk to collect funds for the Retarded Childrens' Association was a great success with wonder-
ful response. Everyone agreed that their blisters were worth the sense of achievement all participants
received. The big event of the year was the immense production of "Bye Bye Birdie" which was just one
more of the many Pickering dramatic achievements. The joint prom with Dunbarton High, Mediaeval May
Mid -Knight was the social dance of the year and was well attended by many students and teachers.

Joy Green, Valedictorian and Ontario Scholar, was famous for her high marks all the way through high
school. She won trophies for Public Speaking, was President of the Students' Council and a Prefect. Be-
sides this, who will ever forget the day she appeared in a blonde wig?
Joy is now studying at McGill University and enjoying her work there very much. She quotes W.A.
Peterson in "The Art of Living" when she says, `The only ceiling life has is the one you give it. You are
surrounded by infinite possibilities for growth and achievement. Keep your heart young and your expecta-
tions high and never allow your dreams to die."
Barbara Egoroff, the All Round Girl, has been a member of the Choir and the gym team. She was a
Prefect, a Cheerleader and played basketball. Her marks were always good, and Barbara was a credit to
the school. She is continuing her studies at Waterloo Lutheran University.
Doug Blackman, the All Round Boy, has been on the Honour Roll every year he has been in high school,
and in 1967 he received his Honour Letter. He played basketball and volleyball, took part in Cadets and the
Choir and was Yearbook Editor 1966-67. Douglas has always given of his best in anything he undertook.

In officially opening the addition to the Pickering
District High School the Minister of Education said
that today's educators must be capable of discovering
the changing fields for themselves and that they must
be in a position to assess intelligently what is happen-
ing in the business and commerce community today.
He said that our most important investment today is
in education and that we must make this investment
if we are to survive as a community.

Mr. J. Clarke Richardson, B.A., B.Ed.
Superintendent of Secondary Schools
Mr. J. Clarke Richardson has been associated with Pickering High School since 1958 when he became
Principal here. Our school had anenrolmentthen of 545 students, and in the entire district there were only
938 high school students. Pickering District High School, as it was known then, was almost entirely an
academic school although a commercial course was offered. Now the Pickering High School is a fully com-
posite school, and of course Mr. Richardson has had an important role to play in these changes, first as
Principal and then as Superintendent.
Mr. Richardson finished high school in Fort Elgin, Ontario and went to Normal School (what is now called
Teachers' College) at Stratford. From here he taught elementary school, all grades, for four years and
then took his B.A. at the University of Western Ontario. Here his extra -curricular activities included de-
bating and the science club. He became Assistant Principal at the D.A. Gordon High School in Wallaceburg,
and then he moved to Mount Forest to teach science. In Mount Forest he was appointed Vice -Principal, then
Principal, and in 1958 he became the Pickering High School's third Principal. In the summer of 1960, Mr.
Richardson completed his Bachelor of Education degree, and in 1964 he became Superintendent of Secondary
Schools, which position he holds at the present time.
A resident of Pickering, Mr. Richardson has been active in the community. He has held important
positions in the Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge and the Lions' Club, and he has been instrumental in making
it possible financially for many students to continue their education.
I asked Mr. Richardson what hisfeelingswere concerning the Pickering High School and the position that
he holds in the overall system. He commented that he finds serving in the field of education in this day and
age exciting, challenging and rewarding and although he misses the direct challenge of teaching and the
personal relationship with students in the classroom, he feels that if the work he does helps keep the learning
in the classroom going smoothly, he has some cause for satisfaction. We feel that he has a great deal of
cause for satisfaction. (by Judy Snow)

MR. DOUGLAS J. KETTLE, our Principal, attended
high school in Midland. He went on to the University
of Toronto to study for his Bachelor of Physical
Education degree. Here his extra -curricular activi-
ties included basketball, football and the Athletic
Society. Once he had this degree, Mr. Kettle attended
the Ontario College of Education and began teaching
in Barrie. He taught physical education and com-
mercial subjects and became Head of the Physical
Education at North Collegiate in Barrie. In 1962
Mr. Kettle came to the Pickering District High School
as Vice -Principal. At this time Mr. Richardson
was our Principal and when he became Superintendent
of Secondary Schools in 1964, Mr. Kettle became our
Principal. In the same year he received his Master
of Education degree from Toronto. Mr. Douglas Kettle,
In Mr. Kettle's opinion, a school as large as r. Dough M. Kettle,
Pickering necessitates the loss of personal contact B.
between the Principal and the students. (However, Mr. Kettle does an excellent job of keeping that contact
there.) Mr. Kettle assures me that the school will not run at top efficiency until we reach an enrolment of
fifteen hundred students, for though we are stretching our space capacity now, some of the courses are
still quite small. One of Mr. Kettle's favourite recreations is fishing, and I do not envy him the job of
fishing, for extra classrooms when the enrolment does reach fifteen hundred. (by Judy Snow)
MR. LEWIS C.R. BRIGGS, BSA, B.Ed., Principal of Pickering District High School 1950 to 1955, came to
Pickering from Tilbury apd Blenheim. Hehadbeen Principal at Tilbury and Boys' Principal and agriculture
teacher at Blenheim. During the war he trained inspectors for the United Kingdom inspectorate in Canada.
Mr. Briggs came to Pickering before the new school was completed, and he set up the system under which
the school was operated. During his years at Pickering the enrolment grew from four hundred day students
to six hundred students and thirty evening students. He left to become Principal of the Nickel District
Collegiate and Vocational Institute at Sudbury. In announcing the he was leaving, Mr. Briggs said, "It has
been a real pleasure to work in the Pickering Community. The boys and girls respond readily to oppor-
tunities. The parents are very appreciative and proud of their school. The Board has been very co-op-
erative, and it has been a pleasure to work with its members, in this most progressive community.''
Vice -Principal Principal Vice -Principal MR. J.R. STEVENSON, B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed., Principal of Pickering- District High School 1955 to 1958, was
born in Toronto but attended London schools. In 1933 he obtained the degree of B.A. with Honours in
Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario where he was President of his graduation
year. After spending a year in the Investment Department of the Manufacturers' Life Insurance Company,
he attended the Ontario College of Education and graduated in 1935. For the next fourteen years he taught
at Oshawa Collegiate and Vocational Institute before going to Medway High School near London as Head of
the Commercial Department. In 1953 he was appointed Principal of Perth Collegiate where he stayed for
two years before moving to Pickering as Principal of Pickering District High School. Here he started the
special classes for transfer students from the public schools and entrusted the guidance of these students
and development of their courses to Mrs. Pearl Rogers, who has ably carried out these duties for the past
ten years. It was while he was at Pickering that an outstanding production of the play Julius Caesar was
first performed on a proscenium stage similar to the one now used in Stratford.
Mr. Stevenson's final move was to Scarborough where he was appointed successively Principal of
W.A. Porter Collegiate in 1958, Principal of David and Mary Thomson Collegiate in 1959, and then Super -
Mr. Douglas J. Kettle, B.P.H.E., M.Ed. intendent of Secondary Schools in 1962.

A. ROSS IRWIN, the son of a Methodist minister, was born in Newcastle, Ontario. However, before long
the family moved to Oshawa where Mr. Irwin attended the King Street School for the Junior and Senior
fourth grades. He entered the Oshawa High School at the age of twelve, and he remembers that even then
there were portable classrooms.
Mr. Irwin had a lively interest in athletics. He played rugby and was a member of the track team. He
played Junior Hockey for Whitby and Church League Hockey in Oshawa and was on the team that won the
Oshawa Bantam Championship in 1924. He also played Box LaCrosse for the former Red Wings of Whitby.
Besides these activities he was Captain and Adjutant of the Ontario Regiment (Reserve) of Oshawa.
After high school days, Mr. Irwin spent fouryears in the Engineering Department of the Bell Telephone,
and after this he was Manager of Stonehaven Farms and Redwing Orchards until 1952. From then until
now he has been Business Administrator of the Pickering District School Board.
There has been a great deal of public service in Mr. Irwin's life. He has done a great deal of work on
the Pickering Public School Board and is its Chairman at the present time. He was a Trustee of the Police
Village of Pickering and the first Chairman of the Planning Board of the Village of Pickering. He is a
Past President and Charter Secretary of the Pickering Rotary Club and was Secretary -Treasurer of the
Pickering Men's Club. He came the first Chairman of the Pickering District High School Board when it was
formed in 1949 and held that position until April, 1952. After he became Business Administrator of the
Board, he was made member of the Association of Registered School Business Officials. He is also a
member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Irwin has lived in the Village of Pickering since 1934. He and his wife, the former Miss Emily
Granger, will have been married thirty-five years on their next anniversary. They have three children,
Geraldine, who is now Mrs. Atkinson and has two children of her own; Ross with two children; and Jim,
also married.
The Village of Pickering and the Pickering High School have been fortunate in having such a willing
and capable person as Mr. Irwin.
MR. BURNETT JAMIESON was born in Brock Township and lived there until he was seven. Then his
family lived for six months on a farm near Kane, fifty-five miles southwest of Winnipeg. After this his
family came to Balsam, and he has lived there ever since. Mr. Jamieson attended the Balsam Public
School and the Claremont Continuation School. In conjunction with his farming, he has done some livestock
judging in Ontario County, Peterborough and Toronto.
Public service has been an important part of Mr. Jamieson's life. He was Secretary -Treasurer of the
Sunday School Association of Pickering Township for several years, was Superintendent of the Mount Zion
Sunday School for about twenty-five years and is now an Elder in the Church. He has always enjoyed farm
life, and it is interesting to note that the five men responsible for the setting up of the Pickering District
High School Board were farmers.
Mr. Jamieson married the former Miss Lillian Parrott, and they have three children, Maureen (Mrs.
Ward), Donald and Mary Jean (Mrs. Martin). Their grandchildren are Dianne, Larry and Ronnie Ward;
Karen, Lynn and Barbara Jamieson, and Billie Martin.
MR. W. PERCY NEALE was a devoted member of the Pickering High School Board until ill health
forced him to give up this position in 1956. He died September 27, 1962. At the Commencement Exercises
at the Pickering District High School that fall, a plaque was dedicated to him, and each year the name of
the Captain of the Prefects is inscribed on this plaque.
Mr. Neale was the father of three children; Mary, Coila (Mrs. Cook), and Ron. His wife is living on
the farm which she and Mr. Neale enjoyed on No. 2 Highway in Pickering.
46
MR. HAROLD MITCHELL was born in Pickering Township. He went to the Base Line Public School,
the Pickering Continuation School and then began farming on Sandy Beach Road. He moved from there to
his farm on White's Road in the early forties, but this year he rebought the farm on Sandy Beach Road; and
his daughter Marie and her husband are living there now. He bought his first guernsey cattle in Nova Scotia
in 1938, and he has enjoyed dealing in cattle ever since.
Mr. Mitchell is married to the former Miss Winnifred Barnes, and they have two daughters; Marie, now
Mrs. David Liddle and a teacher at the Agincourt Collegiate, and Marlene in Grade XIII at the Dunbarton
High School. Naturally the Mitchells were happy when Marie was Queen of the Prom in her Grade XIII
year at Pickering, and Marlene was Princess in her Grade XII year at Dunbarton.
A member of the Dunbarton United Church since he was fifteen, Mr. Mitchell has been on the Board
of Stewards for about twenty years and on Session for about five. He has been a member of the Masonic
Lodge since 1937 and of the Kiwannis Club since 1948. In the latter he was President in 1952 and Lieuten-
ant -Governor of Division 6B in 1963.
MR. DAVID CLARINGBOLD was born in Toronto where he attended elementary school and the Eastern
High School of Commerce. He also spent five and a half years in the RCAF. In 1945 he came to Ajax to
establish the Ajax Division of the University of Toronto to take care of the many war veterans who were
rushing to University, and he has lived in Ajax ever since. He was first appointed to the Pickering District
High School Board in 1950 and was Vice -Chairman from 1952 to 1953 and from 1954 to 1956. He was a
member of the Board until 1959, and he again became a member in 1964.
The interest that Mr. Claringbold has in education is shown by his many important positions. He is
Secretary of the Board of Governors and Director of Administrative Services at the University of Toronto,
a Director of Chetwynd Films Ltd., the Frederick Harris Music Company in Toronto and in London, Eng-
land and an Executive Member of the Canadian Association of University Business Officers, work which
takes .him all across Canada. He was also the first recipient of the Tom Russell Kinsman of the Year
Trophy in 1956.
Mr. Claringbold is married with two sons, David and Alan, both married.
TEACHERS ON THE STAFF IN 1951 AND 1967:
MR. TAYLOR has been a mathematics teacher since Pickering High School opened
in 1951. From the beginning of the school to 1966, excepting only one year he occupied
Room 13, which has since been incorporated into the Home Economics room. From
here, and more lately from other rooms he has educated all grades in all Maths, from
middle and upper -school Algebra to New Math, and Mr. Taylor can tell you, the only
thing new about New Math, is the name.
Mr. Taylor remembers well the first days of our school. Back in 151 it was doubtful
whether the school would open, he tells me, as there was trouble with the water supply.
However, a large tank was put in and some company (by the name of Michell's Trucking,
he believes) brought in water and kept the tank filled. The result was that at no time did
anyone have to take measures to conserve water.
Mr. Taylor taught his first term at this school without a door on his room. Also the
new P.A. system was periodically tested in those days by having the radio broadcast over it. Mr. Taylor
reports that he sometimes had a little difficulty controlling his class through episodes of, "Will Molly
marry John? Tune in next week . . . ." However, Mr. Taylor seems to have enjoyed those first days very
much. (by Judy Snow)
MR. FENTON helped open the school in 1951 as an Industrial Arts teacher, and when
the school became composite recently, he was made Technical Director. Now starting
his sixteenth year here, Mr. Fenton states many reasons for staying. He likes the school,
and he likes the teaching staff. He feels that the calibre of student he has to work with is
very good. Then he says that there are some fringe benefits as Pickering's proximity to
Toronto without actually being in it. Also, here he is close to the holiday area and can
easily get to places like Haliburton.
Mr. Fenton likes to look back on the fine successes of some of the graduates of the
Pickering High School. He finds pleasure in talking to former students about their inter-
ests and successes whether in the working world or at university. Mr. Fenton particularly
enjoys talking about these things over a game of golf. (by Judy Snow)

Mr. Russ Miss Vera Emerson Miss Vera Ballance
MR. RUSS has taught agriculture and science at the Pickering High School since it opened. He has been
the Head of the Science Department for four years, succeeding Mr. Hunt, who left this position to teach in
Antigua.
Mr. Russ Is department was incomplete, as was much of the building when the school first opened. The
first term's teaching took place while ceilings were put up, tables were replaced by lab desks and sinks
were put in. The atmosphere of the small school was friendly, and everyone knew everyone else, but even
then Pickering High School was larger than the schools many of the students had been attending. It was an
interesting time as all the new clubs were formed and generally order was brought out of chaos. (by Judy
Snow)
MISS VERA EMERSON was one of the teachers at Pickering District High School when it opened in 1951.
She taught Physical Education until 1963 when she left the staff to become librarian in Huron Park Secondary
School. In 1965 Miss Emerson returned to be our librarian.
Miss Emerson remembers an occasion during the first term at this school when a small man from
Madren Manufacturing Company came to install one of the end baskets for basketball. At the time she was
teaching volleyball skills and he was hit several times by flying balls. Finally he threw down his tools in
disgust and "with a string of profanity" told everyone off, including Miss Emerson.
The geographical situation of Pickering appeals to Miss Emerson as we are close to Toronto and the
live theatre and concerts there. Miss Emerson likes Pickering High itself for its cross section of students
with differing family backgrounds, social levels, religious backgrounds, and educational goals. This
spectrum adds real life to the school. (by Judy Snow)
MISS VERA BALLANCE spent her childhood in Selby, Ontario and went to the Napanee Collegiate
Institute. She taught elementary school and then went to Queen's University where she took honours in
French and English. She taught at the Deseronto and Warkworth High Schools and then decided to try the
North. Here she taught in Cobalt and Kirkland Lake. Then on a scholarship from Queen's University, she
studied at the Sorbonne for two years. She taught in Burlington and while teaching there went on exchange
to British Columbia. She took summer courses at Columbia University and received her M.A. In 1951
she came to Pickering as Head of the French department which position she held until her retirement in
1964. However, retirement did not slow down Miss Ballance. Since then she has taught at Dunbarton High
School, Bishop Strachan and at the present time she is teaching Conversational English at a newly opened
university in Teheran, Iran.
Miss Ballance will long be remembered around Pickering. She is a specialist in English and French
and has done a great deal of work in the Cleveland method of teaching French. She is a member of the
Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, a society to which only the best teachers are invited to belong. At the time of
the Queen's Coronation she was cited as being outstanding in the field of education and received a Coronation
medal, an honour given to few teachers.
Miss Ballance's achievements as a teacher are well known. She is just as well known for her interest
in her students and for her hospitality in her beautiful home looking over Lake Ontario from Rosebank. This
home has been a gathering place for students and staff over the years and it and its gracious chatelaine
have a special place in the history of the Pickering High School.
48
MR. PIKE was born in Whichurch Township, York County,
one of a family of ten children, three of whom taught to retire-
ment in the high schools. He attended Betheda Public School
where his father taught for forty-three years, Stouffville Con-
tinuation School, Markham High School (for Grade XIII), Toronto
Normal School (now Teachers' College) and McMaster Univer-
sity when it was located in Toronto.
His teaching career took Mr. Pike many places. ,He taught
in Sutton West Continuation School, Waterford High School,
Kirkland Lake Collegiate and Vocational Institute, was Principal
at Carleton Place High School and Head of the Mathematics
Department at the Pickering District High School. He played
hockey and baseball and coached these sports as well as track
and field. While he was coaching in Kirkland Lake, he saw
Gus Mortson and Ted Lindsay in their pre -professional days.
Mr. Pike is a member of the United Church, and over the
years has taught Sunday School and been Superintendent, a
member of the Official Board and of the Choir. He has taken
a great deal of interest in recent years in his flower garden,
and he is a keen student of history and economics who follows
world events very closely. His wife is also a teacher, and
naturally their three sons are interested in education. George,
a Valedictorian at the Pickering High School, graduated from
Queen's, and James and David are now attending university;
James at the University of Waterloo and David at Queen's.
May Mr. Pike enjoy many happy years of retirement)
