The odds are one in one million of being struck by lighting, but one in 700 of having a fire in a home with property damage, Steve Fowlds said in an interview during Fire Prevention Week. But even as fires continue to destroy homes, and take the lives of loved ones, many people are still not taking the necessary precautions to pre- vent them. “They definitely think it won’t happen to them,” Mr. Fowlds said. So Pickering Fire Services has been doing its best to promote fire prevention this week. Service members have been teaching residents the do’s and don’ts of fire safety. The main fire hall was open to the public for a tour on Sunday, and ser- vice members spent a few days at the Pickering Town Centre this week, teaching important aspects of fire prevention and safety. “The theme this year is smoke alarms, ‘a sound we can live with’,” the fire inspector said. Durham residents can now dial one three- digit number or click onto a single website to be connected with thousands of local com- munity, health, government and social ser- vices. 211 service is now available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Dialing the number puts callers in touch with trained specialists who offer free, anonymous and confidential help in 170 languages. The 211 website has a searchable database of 56,000 services. "This will make services so much more accessible, because it's an easy number to remember and there's a live person to talk to 24/7," said Cathy Gowland, manager of infor- mation services for the local United Way. "Sometimes it's just nice for people to have someone to talk to if they're having a problem in the middle of the night." Local community leaders and politicians celebrated the launch of the new service and watched a demonstration on Sept. 30. Deputy Oshawa Mayor Nester Pidwerbecki placed a sample call to 211, posing as a con- cerned parent in need of help for a 17 year old showing signs of depression. A 211 specialist suggested a visit to the fam- ily doctor and outlined the therapy services offered at Frontenac Youth Services and youth mental health services available at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. "If you have a burning house, who do you call?” asked Bill Morris, executive director of Ontario 211 Services. "911. If you have a burning issue, who do you call? 211." Other examples of how 211 can help include connecting new parents with child birth class- es and breastfeeding help, putting newcom- ers to Canada in touch with settlement servic- es, English classes and refugee programs and helping seniors find home support, Meals on Wheels and caregiver services. The addition of Durham Region means 211 is now available to 69 per cent of Ontario resi- dents. It is also gaining ground across Canada, with Vancouver expected to be up and run- ning in the coming weeks. In addition to helping people find a service they have requested, 211 staff is also trained to anticipate services people might need, such as connecting a caller looking for a food bank with information about financial assistance and employment training. Toronto police said that in September, a woman post- ed an ad for a used vehi- cle on Kijiji, then met with interested buyers and took deposits, promising the vehicle would be ready for delivery after it received maintenance work. But once the victims handed over the money, all contact with the sell- er ended, police said. Karen Anne Rose, 40, of Ajax, faces two counts of fraud, two counts of possession of pro- ceeds of crime and attempted fraud. Police believe there may be more victims. Bigger blue boxes are being distributed by Durham Region in the hopes of increasing recycling. Mirka Januszkiewicz, the director of waste management services for Dur- ham, says, “A few years ago in stores, we saw bigger and bigger jars. We couldn’t process them and recycle them through our system. We had to capture this.” The bigger blue boxes make it possible to handle the larger containers, she adds. “Our analysis, the business case, by using the bigger blue boxes, we’ll capture three per cent more,” Ms. Januszkiewicz notes. The new boxes are to be used for such items as jars, cans, bottles and other food and bev- erage containers. “We discourage people put- ting in paper. They won’t be able to lift it,” Ms. Januszkiewicz says. The bigger boxes are 16 gallons, compared to previous ones which are 14 gallons. The boxes are being distributed through the end of October to all homes. There’s no cost to homeowners, Ms. Janusz- kiewicz states. Fifty per cent of the cost came from the provincial government, while the rest was included in the Region’s budget. DURHAM -- Durham drivers had better think twice before they reach for their cellphone with one hand while the other is on a steering wheel. The Durham Region Health Department has launched its Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel campaign to promote safe driving in Dur- ham. October 26 is the one-year anniversary of Bill 118, banned the use of hand-held devices while driving in Ontario. A 2010 Ontario Ministry of Transportation study states that when drivers take their eyes off the road for more than two seconds, their risk of a collision is doubled. However, if cellphone use is involved, that risk is four times higher. The campaign exists to help prevent these haz- ards and promote awareness of the dangers of using hand-held devices where you must type, text, talk, dial or e-mail. Campaign ads can be seen in local movie the- atres, along with local schools, which will be receiving information cards. Over the years, I’ve been sent to cover lots of protests where hundreds were expected to show, only to find a handful of faithful to the cause waving placards. On Tuesday night, that wasn’t the case and I admit to being a little surprised to find a packed Ajax council chamber. The protest was in response to mayoral challenger Sherry Clymer’s comments at a previous debate. At that debate, she said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish’s decision to raise the pride flag, a symbol of the gay commu- nity, was a mistake. She went on to say that for the sake of inclusiveness, the Town best be raising the Nazi flag and she talked about the pain families felt when someone came out as gay. Though she later rescinded the Nazi com- ment, she created a fire storm of controver- sy and shortly after she made her remarks, Ajax resident Kurtis McAleer and Oshawa resident Jayme Harper created a Facebook event called “Rally in Support of Ajax’s LGBTQ Community”. The group’s stated goal: “It’s time to show Mrs. Clymer that this is 2010! Please come to this debate to show your support for our LGBTQ Community!” A popular feature on Facebook allows people to click “I’m attending”, “Maybe” or “No” when they receive an invitation on the site. Before the debate, more than 70 people had said they’d attend. Among those who declined the invite, many left messages of support on the event’s wall. Now, Kurtis and Jayme could have easily started an online group simply to condemn Ms. Clymer’s comments. And I have no doubt hundreds, if not thousands, of people from across the world would have joined. After all, it only takes a click. Had they done that, it would have been a classic example of Facebook slacktivism where people essen- tially make little effort to make a statement and are generally not taken very seriously. Instead, by using Facebook as just one tool to draw dozens to the debate, the group sent a much stronger message by its phys- ical presence. It’s hard to know how many people attended the event because of the controversy and how many came because they wanted to talk about more typical cam- paign issues. But I suspect by the end of the night both groups had intermingled. The fact Ms. Clymer was a no-show was almost immaterial. The debate attendees still posed their questions about diversity and inclusiveness to Mayor Steve Parish. Their support for Mayor Parish and Ajax’s progressive record on diversity and commu- nity engagement shows every other munic- ipality in Durham and across the GTA that they should take a similar path. And what could have been negative reaction for Ms. Clymer and her set of beliefs, became posi- tive reinforcement for the Town and Mayor Parish, which was well deserved. But none of that would have happened if online postings weren’t turned into people packing the council chamber on Tuesday night. -- Reka Szekely’s social media column appears every Friday in this space. Contact her on Facebook, Twitter (@ rszekely) or e-mail at rszekely@durhamregion.com Reka Szekely Online protests must move to real world to make an impact Pickering residents are being reminded about the importance of fire safety as local fire officials bring to a close annual Fire Prevention Week. The annual week is set aside to raise awareness and remind people that preparation is the key to fire pre- vention. This is not a purely public rela- tions exercise for fire officials. Con- sider that in 2009, Pickering fire offi- cials had nearly 4,000 calls for ser- vice. Consider that fires in Pickering between 2005 and 2009 resulted in more than $2.4 million in losses and damages. Consider also that spring and fall tend to be the busiest times for Pickering firefighters. Firefighters know first hand the ease and speed with which a fire can ignite and spread. They have experi- enced the loss of life and injury. They know that simple steps and vigilance are fundamental to fire safety. In the starkest terms, it can happen to you. To address the timely and impor- tant message offered by Pickering fire officials during Fire Prevention Week, it’s important that Pickering residents take the time to check fire alarms (which should be on every level of the house, near sleeping areas), replace worn batteries and plan an escape route for family mem- bers in the event of a fire. If you already have an escape plan, take a few minutes to review it and practise with family members. And as the cold weather arrives, a gentle reminder to treat candles with great care, ensure that space heaters are kept away from flammable mate- rials, that the stove is never left unat- tended. Smoking materials should be kept out of reach of children at all times. Firefighters will tell you that a fire can engulf a room in a matter of min- utes. Yet that’s all it really takes to ensure that your home is fire safe, that alarms are in working order and that your escape plan is up to date. Finally, a statistic to help drive the message home in Pickering: the chances of being struck by lightning in any given year are approximately one in 700,000. Pickering fire inspec- tor Steve Foulds points out that the chances of having a fire in a home that cause property damage are roughly one in 700. Take the time this weekend to pro- mote safety in your home. Don’t ignore this timely message Don’t become a fire statistic. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 8 , 2 0 1 0 7 AP du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 8 , 2 0 1 0 8 AP Nov. 2 outing for Rouge Hill club includes a viewing of China’s Terracotta Army exhibit PICKERING -- The Rouge Hill Seniors Club is inviting residents to view an extraordinary ROM exhibit in Toronto on Nov. 2. Accessible and transparent represen- tation -- I would like to create a volun- teer community advisory committee for Ward 3. I would like to make it up of a cross section of the ward and get feed- back on council initiatives as they are going through the process. I would like to change the way motions are voted on and have the vote take place AFTER public input is provided which allows council the time to discuss amongst themselves, rather than having a pre- determined vote. 2. Taxes -- look for ways to streamline spending and dis- cover efficiencies with the end goal to LOWER taxes. We need to start running the city like a business and not as flow through expenses to the taxpayer. 3. Smart growth development -- focus on attracting developments which meet the city’s predefined goals. I would like to establish a higher priority on attracting new business and retention of old busi- ness. I would look to create a business advisory centre which would serve the needs of achieving this goal. My philosophy on ethics and trans- parency in government: We need to remove the impression that politicians are self serving. We need to establish an ombudsman who handles city com- plaints; be it council, city staff, or proce- dural. If I am elected I will put forward the motion of creating an ombudsman position for accountability. Every step of the process needs to be transparent and the public needs to be engaged to provide valuable feedback and concerns need to be heard and worked with. What are the biggest problems that have to be addressed in the ward you are running in?: The citizens as a whole are left unengaged and feel somewhat disconnected from deci- sions made at the city level. I want to bridge that gap by being available for residents when they need their council- lor. We need to attract and retain busi- ness which yields sustainable employ- ment. We need to ensure that our agri- cultural land is used to the fullest and create agricultural boards to address these concerns. We need to establish a 10 year vision plan which will address waste diversion, tax expenditure reduc- tions, growth and accountability. How do you plan to bring a strong voice to the council table on Picker- ing’s behalf?: Unlike the incumbent, I live and work in Pickering. I am avail- able when community needs me most. I want to hear from constituents and have open dialogue from all walks of life and encourage involvement in the decision making process. Feedback is prospec- tive. I am a business owner and I have the ‘cheque writer’ mentality, rather than the ‘cheque casher’ thinking. I believe in fiscal responsibility and look at every- thing as if it were coming from my own pocket ... as a tax payer it is coming from our pockets equally. Michael Odle Three issues I feel strongly about: Poor voter turnout. Participation is the engine that drives democracy. The high property taxes in general and seniors in particular. Affordable recreational facilities for our youth and seniors. My philosophy on ethics and transparency in government: I feel that the practices of our government should be ethical, fair, Participatory and transparent. The failure to follow this philosophy leads to mist-trust and apathy. (Approximately 25 per cent turnout). What are the biggest problems that have to be addressed in the ward you are running in?: Public safety. (Speeding and traffic related issues. Taxes. There are a significant number of voters in ward 3 that has this issue high on there list. How do you plan to bring a strong voice to the council table on Pickering’s behalf?: I am going to work to have a more participatory tax payer by meeting with them in an informal forum to discuss there issues and to inform them of all initiatives the council/ staff are considering. How do you plan to bring a strong voice to the council table on Picker- ing’s behalf?: I am going to work to have a more participatory tax payer by meeting with them in an informal forum to discuss there issues and to inform them of all initiatives the council/staff are considering. Laurissa Hraiki Three issues I feel strongly about: My most important issue is taxes. Resi- dents believe that they are paying too much. Pickering’s tax rate has been increasing. I believe that the city must be more fiscally responsible and work on finding ways to stop this consistent rising. I want to reduce unnecessary government spending and keep our taxes low. Traffic and gridlock is another main issue. Getting around Pickering is getting more difficult and development is going to make it worse. Pickering needs an integrated transit plan to help combat these issues. Farmland protec- tion is another major issue. I believe the farmland is vital to our city, as some of the finest farmland in the province it is great to have so close to home, and not something we should just pave over. My philosophy on ethics and trans- parency in government: Pickering residents are the reason why every member of council is there. They entrust their money and their city into the hands of a few individuals to run the city. They must be able to have their voices heard because they are the most important part of the city. Also, they must be able to see exactly what council is doing and given the chance to say that they agree or not. What are the biggest problems that have to be addressed in the ward you are running in?: Taxes are the number one problem facing most resi- dents. Each one believes that they pay too much. Traffic is a continual problem and with the development of Seaton it will only get worse. North Pickering can- not support such a large development when it doesn’t have adequate trans- portation. Seaton needs to be planned properly or it will create chaos. Seaton will end up costing Pickering tax payers both more money and more time stuck in traffic. How do you plan to bring a strong voice to the council table on Pick- ering’s behalf?: I plan on bringing a strong voice to council through hard work and determination. I will do what- ever it takes to make sure the residents of Pickering are properly represented. I will listen to every concern residents have and I will address them in a timely fashion and I will fight for what the resi- dents want on council. David Pickles Three issues I feel strongly about: 1. Keeping Taxes Reasonable -- although the lowest of urban communities in Dur- ham, I work to keep expenditures low while maintaining sercives to residents. I will continue to attract more business to Pickering to help control residental taxes. 2. Sustainable Growth -- a vibrant community, jobs, a downtown, protect- ing the environment and green spaces makes, good roads and transit make a good community. I work hard at this and have the vision and long range planning experience. 3. A Safe and Enjoyable Community. Police, fire and ambulance are key but I also work at getting side- walks, lighting, park equipment, trail and recreation facilites and programs to make Pickering a great place to live, work and play. My philosophy on ethics and trans- parency in government: I am the elected representative of the residents to be their voice on Council. I consider all views, look at the facts, and long term perspective and I make informed decisions that are best for the residents of Pickering. I have had the highest marks in the News Advertiser Report Cards, perfect attendance and the lowest expenses. I intiated an elected Regional Chair, an integrity commis- sioner and election reform. I serve and report to residents. What are the biggest problems that have to be addressed in the ward you are running in?: Maintaing infra- structure like roads and facilities while keeping taxes low. This requires good planning and budgeting and attract- ing new business/business taxes to Pickering with jobs and to help pay for such work and help keep residential taxes lower. Ensuring we attract the right kinds of development in the right places. Sustainable development that provides a good mix of local jobs, recre- ation areas, parks, and green spaces. How do you plan to bring a strong voice to the council table on Picker- ing’s behalf?: I will continue to speak up and raise the matters that are impor- tant to me and my neighbours -- the residents of Pickering. The News Adver- tiser recently noted “He often seems to be the voice of reason on Council”. Ensuring that I hear the views of resi- dents, staff and other Councillors and keeping residents informed makes for better decisions. I stand up for residents and what we beieve in. Mr. Fowlds suggests mov- ing the alarms that go off easily, while cooking or making toast for example, to a different area on the floor, but still keeping them close to sleeping areas. He also suggested trying a photoelectric alarm, which works just as well, but is not as prone to nuisance problems. And do not remove them alto- gether. Those who don’t have working smoke alarms can face a fine of $235 or may even go to court to face a fine of up to $50,000. “That is the maximum of any violation of the fire code,” he said. Mr. Fowlds said families should also plan an escape route and a outside meeting place so they can easily let firefighters know if anyone is still inside. The mall display included a model home where kids were asked to point out the fire haz- ards. In Ontario, the biggest causes of fires are unattended cooking, heating equipment, electrical equipment, smokers’ materials and candles, Mr. Fowl- ds said. Never leave a boiling pot unat- tended, and it’s important “to give space heaters space.” Elec- trical equipment such as cords should be in good shape and smokers’ materials such as matches and lighters should be kept out of reach of children, he said. “The top four we’re definitely getting fewer and fewer, but can- dles are increasing in Ontario,” Mr. Fowlds said. He suggests making sure the candles are on a sturdy base, sur- rounded by metal or glass and out of reach of children and pets. From the time a fire starts, it can flash over the entire room within three minutes, Mr. Fowlds said. “You may have only a minute or a minute-and-a-half to escape,” he said. They defi nitely think it won’t happen to them. I had to complete my quest. I had to find where the poachers were hiding traps for leopards, an endangered species. As I continued my search for those large traps in the jungle, I was wondering if this was a good idea. Maybe I shouldn’t have cared when I overheard in the café as those two men were planning how they were going to trap leopards for their fur. Maybe I shouldn’t have eavesdropped on those two men but I had been curious to know what they were talking about. I said to myself, this was the right thing to do. Mosquitoes swarmed around me looking for ways to get through my mosquito net I wore over my hat. Then I found the traps. Large cages sitting beside a sandbox tree, a large tree that can grow up to 30 metres tall. It is recognized by the many dark, pointed spines and its smooth brown bark. The cage doors were wide open and inside were large amounts of meat as bait. The traps were designed so that an animal weighing over 30 pounds would automatically trigger a mechanism shutting the door of the cage with the creature inside. The floors would act like large scales. An automatic signal would then be sent to the poach- ers’ cell phones letting them know an animal had been trapped. I looked at the cages and asked myself how I could prevent leop- ards or any other animal getting caught in these traps. I didn’t have any tools with me to destroy the traps. If I left to accomplish this, an animal might get trapped in the meantime. As I looked at the traps, I got a crazy idea what I could do. With- out thinking I walked into a cage and the door slammed shut. Then I quickly called the police on my cell phone, explained what happened and told them how they could locate me using the GPS. They promised to send a helicopter that should come very soon and hung up. My wait for the police started and I didn’t feel comfort- able at the thought of who might arrive first, the police or the poachers. I heard an engine roar and hoped that maybe the police were com- ing with a jeep. Instead, the poach- ers approached the traps only to find me in the cage. They discussed loudly how to get rid of me as a wit- ness. They opened the door to my cage and dragged me out. At that moment, the deafening roar of a police helicopter sounded right above. As the helicopter land- ed in a nearby clearing, two police officers jumped out and came run- ning towards us with their pistols drawn. Fortunately, the poachers didn’t try to fight them using me as a human shield. They were arrested and my attempt to save an endan- gered species had a happy ending. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Oc t o b e r 8 , 2 0 1 0 19 AP at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Regent Theatre Concert Series durhamdurham Great music close to home! COLUMN Rocks ready to roll on a new curling season Annandale starts on Oct. 12 JIM EASSON A new curling season commences the day after Thanksgiving at the Annandale Curling Club. The ice is in and looks great. Beth Potter is the new club president and is looking for- ward to working with the board of executives and giving everyone an outstanding curling season. Her first executive committee meet- ing was held Sept. 6, and the next was Oct. 6. Again the club will have an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 13 from 7-9 p.m. Anyone interested in finding out about the sport and trying a few throws of the rocks is welcome to attend. Clean shoes are a must. There is no charge and volunteers will be avail- able to give some simple instruction. The men’s competitive league will have a warm- up night on Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 7 p.m. on. It is a chance for players to get placed on teams and have a pre-season game. Also coming soon is an adult clinic on Saturday, Oct. 23. Michael Bryson, a member of the Annan- dale Golf and Country Club in Ajax, is attending Trent University in Peterborough. On Sept. 26, Bryson, with vice Wesley For- get, second Sandy Martin and lead Danny Dow, won the Derek Whitehill Memorial Cash spiel at the Peterborough Curling Club. For the Bryson team, it was the first Ontario Junior Curling Tour victory. Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resi- dent Richard Hart at vice, and the front end of Brent Laing and Craig Savill, is well into the curling season. The team tied for fifth in the Shorty Jenkins Bonspiel which ran Sept. 16-19 in Brockville. The team is scheduled to play on the Thanksgiving weekend at the High Park Club in Toronto. It will also com- pete in the StuSells Trophy which will see 18 top men’s teams and 15 top women’s teams play in triple knockout draws Oct. 8-11. The men’s first place team will collect $10,000. Due to other important commitments, Hart will not be able to attend some of the Team Howard planned 2010/11 bonspiels. In his place, Wayne Middaugh will be playing third for the team in Portage, Manitoba on Oct. 22 at the Canad Inns Prairie Classic, Medicine Hat on Dec. 1 in the Alberta Canada Cup, and the March 31 Victoria Curling Classic. HOCKEY Give thanks with the Oshawa Generals on Monday OSHAWA -- Oshawa Generals fans can welcome back the team’s new cap- tain and support a good cause all in one fell swoop on Monday. On Thanksgiving, defenceman Cal- vin de Haan, sporting the ‘C’, will make his season debut at home, leading the Generals into a 2:05 p.m. game against the Ottawa 67’s at the General Motors Centre. Prior to the game, the team will be holding a Thanksgiving food drive, presented by the Real Canadian Super- store on Gibb Street in Oshawa. The food drive is in partnership with Osha- wa’s Simcoe Hall Settlement House, which will help the Gens distribute the donations to families in need through- out the community. The Generals ask fans to bring a non-perishable food item, canned or boxed, to drop boxes at Gates 1, 2 or 3 at the GM Centre Monday. Simcoe Hall Settlement House will be accept- ing donations outside Gate 1. The game will also feature a special Thanksgiving- themed intermission activity. Food will be collected from the time doors open at 1:05 p.m. until the game begins at 2:05 p.m. Fans who bring a non-perishable food item to the GM Centre box office any day prior to the game (the box office is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m., but closed Sunday) will receive $1 off bowl seating tickets. HOCKEY Caggiula scores five for Stouffville Spirit PICKERING -- Drake Caggiula had a night to remember in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. The Pickering resident potted five goals in a recent game as his Stouffville Spirit scored an 11-1 victory over the Brampton Capitals. Caggiula, who played for the Ajax- Pickering Raiders triple-A program, has 12 points in nine games during his rookie season to lead the Spirit. He is playing for Stouffville after being a third- round pick, 51st overall, of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League last spring. In his minor midget season with the Raiders, the centreman put up impres- sive numbers, scoring 56 goals and adding 39 assists for 95 points in 66 games. During these tough economic times, businesses need an affordable way to advertise their products and services and create a name for themselves in the community. The Focus on Business advertising feature was designed to help businesses succeed at an affordable price. The feature has five zones: Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, and advertisers can choose to run in any number of them. If they want to target a specific area, they can choose one zone or if they want broad coverage they can choose to run in all five. Advertising packages are available for six weeks, 18 weeks, 36 weeks and 52 weeks, and discounted rates are available for longer-term commitments. “I have nothing but good things to say about the Focus on Business feature,” says Wayne Hutchison, owner of Durham Windows and Doors, who has been advertising in the feature for 15 years. Having an ad in the newspaper every week helps businesses build recognition. Readers who see the advertisement on a regular basis become familiar with the business. Running in the section long term shows potential customers that the business is consistent and is there for the long term. “I have been advertising for 15 years,” says Tom Susac, owner of Sports Station in Oshawa. “I have people tell me not to worry about giving them my number, because they see me in the paper every week.” The feature includes a 3” wide by 1.5” deep ad, but the best part is the free editorial that comes with each six week run. “The editorials are very powerful and are able to explain things better than you can in an ad,” says Tom. The articles will talk in-depth about the business and can include a photograph or image. Many advertisers find that the articles provide a surge in phone calls and sales. The articles allow readers to learn more about the businesses, including detailed information about the products and services they offer. The Focus on Business advertising feature is great investment for businesses. Many advertisers have seen a dramatic increase in their bottom line because of advertising in the section. “I figure that I spend about $5,000 annually on advertising in Focus on Business, and it definitely brings that back tenfold,” says Tom. Spaces are currently available in all five zones. Call today to book your space! HOCKEY Pickering Panthers tops in Toronto tournament PICKERING -- The Pickering Minor Midget A Panthers came home with the hardware in the recent Brian Steele Memo- rial Tournament held in Toronto, the team’s first tournament of the season. The six-day tournament began with a 3-1 win over East Gwillimbury. The next day, the Panthers suffered their only loss of the tournament, 2-0 to the Leaside Flames. The day after the Panthers regrouped and came away with an impressive 5-1 win over the Hillcrest Summits. Winning their fourth game 5-2 against the Markham Islanders, the Panthers found themselves seeded third out of 18 teams due to their goals for/goals against percentage. Finishing third guaran- teed them a spot in the semifinals against the Markham Waxers whose round-robin goals against was only two. The Pan- thers pulled out a convinc- ing 5-1 win. The final game against the Toronto Eagles was scoreless until 9:50 in the third period. Less than five minutes later, the Panthers added a second goal to win the tournament with a score of 2-0.
