Tyler was born in 2006 with half a heart and although he put up a strong fight in his short life, he only made it seven weeks. “One Saturday morning, he just stopped breathing in my arms at home,” his mother said. Ms. Murray and her husband attended support groups to help cope with the loss, recognize October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and light candles on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remem- brance Day on Oct. 15. They now have two healthy daughters, Kendra and Jocelyn, but Ms. Murray recently realized an important element of her son’s life is missing: a baby book. “I thought, ‘That’s pathetic,’” she said. In May of 2009, Mr. Brenner filed law- suit papers against the City, Mayor Ryan, Durham police and other parties for more than $10 million, alleging false allegations of fraud destroyed his politi- cal career. Mr. Brenner said in a phone interview Sept. 22 that he chose to have the law- suit withdrawn after learning through his campaigning that residents “are very aware of what happened to me.” The former regional councillor was charged in 2006 with fraud-related offences after an audit and allegations of false expense claims. The charges alleged Mr. Brenner submitted false reports for outside clerical services and reimburse- ments between 1999 and 2000, adding up to $5,400. His suit claimed charges were pur- sued in spite of evidence the claims filed by Mr. Brenner were legitimate, and the statement of claim identified Mayor Ryan as the driving force behind the criminal charges being laid. Mr. Brenner lost his Ward 1 regional seat in the election that year to current councillor, Bonnie Littley. But Mr. Brenner was exon- erated after a two-day trial in Oshawa in 2007 when the judge found a lack of evi- dence to support the argu- ments made by the Crown attorney beyond a reason- able doubt. Three years later, Mr. Brenner and Mayor Ryan are opponents in the race for mayor in Pickering for the Oct. 25 election. They both face newcomer Ken Nash. Mr. Brenner said after much campaigning and door-knocking, he found the need to clear his name was no longer necessary. “My repu- tation is very intact,” he said. “I’m satisfied that the people know the true story.” He added he respects the residents of Pickering and doesn’t want them to face further financial risk. “The people of Pickering come first,” he said. “It is time to go forward.” Mayor Ryan spoke to the News Adver- tiser after learning of the news. “I can confirm that Maurice Brenner has withdrawn his $10-million lawsuit against I, David Ryan, the City of Pickering, two independent lawyers, a police inspector and the Durham Regional Police Services Board,” he said. “I can also confirm that none of the defendants paid any money to the plaintiff in this matter. I am confi- dent the public will come to the appro- priate conclusion.” Pickering treasurer Gil Paterson is glad the long battle that required “a lot of work from many parties” is over. “I’m glad Mr. Brenner has seen his way clear to drop the charges,” he said in an interview. Durham officers working in conjunction with the provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit charged 19 people in Oshawa and Toronto with 143 offences during the operation, which targeted illegal weap- ons and drug trafficking. Cops seized four fire- arms, including a loaded AB 10 assault pistol, and 475 rounds of ammunition as they executed eight search warrants. Police also uncovered crack cocaine, oxycontin tablets, marijuana and crystal methamphetamine valued at more than $45,000, plus $26,000 in cash. They seized one vehicle as offence-related proper- ty. A search online proved fruitless when she didn’t find a substantial baby book for deceased infants, so she quickly got her sister-in-law on board to do the graphics and self-published I Will Hold You in My Heart Forever, A Baby Book for Little Angels, through her new publish- ing company, Forever Heart Publishing. The book features baby-like graph- ics one might find in a traditional baby book, but allows families who have experienced the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death to tailor the book specifically to their own situation. Chapters include family tree, preg- nancy moments, showers, final resting place, folders to store keepsakes or sym- pathy cards and journal pages for feel- ings. “It’s very important to get your thoughts out and down on paper as opposed to just keeping them inside,” said Ms. Mur- ray’s father, Al Spence, who is helping with the project. He said he too felt great loss after his grandson’s death. The binder-like rings allow parents to take out pages that don’t pertain to their child’s story. Some are getting creative and making photo albums with the extra pages, Ms. Murray said. The book has been a success, and Ms. Murray and Mr. Spence have been mail- ing them to places nearby and as far as England and Australia. More than 1,500 people have joined the group on Facebook. Feedback on the social networking site shows the book has been therapeutic and comforting for others who have lost babies either before or after birth. “It’s amazed me, the overwhelming response I’ve gotten on this,” Ms. Murray said. She said creating the books affirms the baby’s life, however brief, and provides a keepsake that can be passed down through the generations. “I have two daughters that never got to meet Tyler,” she said, adding her baby book for Tyler will help them get to know their brother. The books are starting to make their way to various hospitals, such as the Hospital For Sick Children, where they’re being sold at the gift shop. Ms. Murray has found a special interest from those specializing in bereavement counselling at hospitals as well. “They just love the book because it doesn’t really exist (elsewhere),” she said. Ms. Murray ultimately hopes to see her special book for sale at card shops and book stores. “It should be there with the regular ones,” she said. The books are $39.95 each and are cur- rently going for a promotional price of $34.95. Bulk orders, especially for char- ities and hospitals, will receive further discounts. The work was being done as part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a week-long nationwide direct-action conservation program. The criticisms are misguided, and as with all anti-registry arguments, they fall far short of telling the whole story. After the tragic shooting death of four police offi- cers in Mayerthorpe, Alberta, the guns that were recovered were run through the long- gun registry. Because the guns were registered fire- arms, police were able to trace the guns to the source and, after further investigation, lay charges against the accomplices who provided the shooter with his weapons in the first place. Sadly, the lives of four police officers were not saved because of the reg- istry, but it provided evidence that helped police officers track down the criminals responsible. Clearly the gun registry is a tool that helps police catch criminals and bring them to justice. Is this what the Conservatives are trying to prevent by scrapping the long- gun registry? Chris Golinsky Oshawa *** To the editor: Re: ‘Gun registry makes paper criminals of honest Canadians’, letter to the editor, newsdurhamregion.com. I agree with Chantal Landry’s letter. I feel that requiring gun owners to be vet- ted before being able to acquire firearms is quite sufficient. Plus, the list of weapons classed as prohibited or restricted is rather more lengthy than may seem necessary to many. The registry has been used by police out West to disarm citizens simply because bylaw officers want to ‘feel safe’ when checking possible non-firearms-related infractions. And what about the criminals? You know, those people lining up outside our police stations eager to register their weapons... Get rid of the registry now! This country should be run according to the wishes of the people, not the police. Jeff Goodall Oshawa *** To the editor: In Canada, our great many privileges as individuals are safeguarded by our respon- sibilities to one another. Driving and own- ing a vehicle is a privilege. Real property ownership is a privilege. So, too, is own- ing a firearm. In order to participate in the privilege of driving a car, we must obtain a licence and insurance, and we must regis- ter our vehicles. In order to own real prop- erty, we must register ourselves as owners in the provincial land registry databases. Why do some irresponsible gun owners believe that they should be exempt from a process with which all of us must com- ply simply to drive a car or own a home? Responsible vehicle and property owner- ship both require registration with the gov- ernment. As a society we must expect the same standard of responsibility from those who choose to own firearms. Tracy Burke Oshawa POLICE PROBE OPP’s 12-hour closure of Hwy. 401 was excessive To the editor: Re: ‘Highway closure goes beyond inves- tigative needs’, letter to the editor, newsdur- hamregion.com, Sept. 3. I totally agree with the writer. Shutting down Hwy. 401 for 12 hours for an accident investigation is nuts. Where are motorists to go? The surface streets are littered with traffic lights. And I bet not one cop was on those surface streets to help move things along. It was a terrible accident and I have much sympathy for the family of the victim. But what in God’s name are the OPP doing? Years of safety blitzes and people drive worse than ever. Law enforcement six or seven long week- ends a year do not produce safer drivers. It’s time to try something else. They must choose one mayor between the incumbent and two challengers. They must choose between 17 other local and regional candidates seeking local and regional seats. They must choose school board trustee candidates and French language school representatives. The choices might not be easy -- there is a mix of candidates with competing and equally substantive views on the issues - - but they must be made conscientiously and with informed opinions on Oct. 25. Your vision of the future for Pickering, whether it hinges on a reduced proper- ty tax burden, development intensity or street improvements, is just as viable as that of the men and women seeking your support. Inform yourself of the issues in your ward and in the larger community. Learn about the candidates and determine if their views align with yours. Is the candidate knowledgeable on the issues? What are their goals related to ser- vice levels, or taxation, or new subdivi- sions? Ask the incumbents about their record on these same issues. Have they been consistent in their voting patterns, or have they allowed their convictions to be steered by the political winds? Will they work to make a tangible difference in your community? How? Finally, do your homework on the may- oral candidates. Is incumbent Dave Ryan living up to his obligations as head of council? Has he shown strong leadership in the last four years? What of Maurice Brenner, seeking a political comeback? He was an effective ward councillor in the past, but can he live up to those past expectations? Will local businessman Ken Nash, a newcomer to the mayor’s race, capital- ize on his outsider status in the race? Will he bring a fresh perspective to ongoing issues? Should he be awarded the mayor’s chain of office? These questions are important to every- one in Pickering, for the men and women selected to represent city taxpayers will do so for the next four years. Pickering residents owe it to themselves to take a stake in their future. Much can change, taxes can go up and difficult political issues will emerge over the next term of office that will require thoughtful and knowledgeable political counsel. Get involved, get informed and get out to cast your vote on Oct. 25. Only you can make the difference. -- Pickering News Advertiser More than 500 handed out last year KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The plight of family members spurred Cathy Tucker to do something for homeless people. Her efforts have grown to the point that hundreds of people, in both Durham Region and Toronto, will benefit. Now in its 11th year, a campaign Ms. Tucker has helped with will provide homeless people with items that will help them survive on the streets. “I had brothers who had been street people. It’s not always something you can help them with. There were mental problems and sui- cides. I can’t help them, but I can help other people,” Ms. Tucker says. It began in 2000 when the Tucker family worshipped at a now-closed Oshawa church. They moved over to St. Paul’s on-the-Hill Anglican Church in Pickering and kept the backpack program going. Last year 535 backpacks were distributed. The backpacks are given to groups and church- es working with the homeless, such as Gate 3:16 and The Refuge youth centre, both in Oshawa, the Bayfair Baptist Church in Pickering, the Fol- lower’s Mission and the Salvation Army’s Florence Booth House, both in Toronto. The donations are stored at St. Paul’s and then the items are put in the backpacks on the Thursday after Thanksgiving. From there, the different organizations pick them up and distribute them. “They know their clientele. We don’t,” she notes. “We don’t get financial support out of the church. The church does give out tax receipts,” Ms. Tucker said. “It’s completely by the parishioners at Pickering.” Items put in the packs include hats, scarves, gloves, underwear, undershirts, socks, face cloths, soap, deodorant, shampoo, combs, toothpaste and toothbrushes. OSHAWA GENERALS Ready for a new ice age Young team brimming with confidence as OHL season set to start BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It seems ages ago that John Tavares, Michael Del Zotto and company were leading the Oshawa Generals into a season that had limitless possibilities. In truth, we’re only three years removed from that 2007-08 cam- paign, but consecutive non-play- off seasons since have made it seem like an eternity to some. Well, the excitement is back, and not only for this season, which gets underway in Peterborough tomorrow, but for the foreseeable future as well. With Chris DePiero settling in for his third season as head coach and general manager of the sto- ried Ontario Hockey League club, and with an ownership group finally stable and including the likes of Peter DeBoer and Adam Graves, it seems the Generals are on the right track again. And, while winning a champion- ship this season might be a stretch, a big step forward is almost cer- tain. The Hockey News is impressed enough to project a fourth place OHL finish for the Generals, which would be a jump of 13 spots if it came to be. What’s more, in the magazine’s list of the league’s top-10 draft- eligible NHL prospects, three are Generals: Boone Jenner, Lucas Lessio and Niklas Jensen. Along with Christian Thom- as, coming off a breakout 41-goal sophomore season, overager Alain Berger, and rookie Scott Laughton, the third pick in the most recent OHL draft, the Generals have the makings of a deep and potent offensive attack. “It’s exciting to be honest with you,” says DePiero, who’s as even- keeled as they come. “We’ve got a lot of good young players here.” Jenner is a known commodity in the league, named runner-up as rookie of the year after putting up 19-30-49 numbers a year ago. Lessio and Jensen, on the other hand, are making their OHL debuts tomorrow, but DePiero is confident they’ll fit right in. “Both guys have high hockey IQ, so their adaptability will be that much quicker,” he says. All three have this much in com- mon: they like the makeup of the team. “We’ve just got to start the sea- son the right way and keep it going and I think we can do some dam- age,” says Jenner. “We’ve got young players here with a lot of talent, so I think we can go really far,” adds Jensen. “We have a good chance this year.” Lessio shoots for the moon. “Our goal is not just to make the playoffs,” he says. “We think we can make a pretty good run to the OHL final and maybe even the Memorial Cup to bring it back here.” The New York Islanders may hold the key to the Generals’ defence. By returning Calvin de Haan to junior -- they have already sent back Tony DeHart -- the Islanders would allow for the Generals to have a nice mix of age and ability on the back end. The big question would then remain in goal, where Michael Zador and Kevin Bailie have yet to live up to their promise, and need to start now if they hope to take the team where it wants to go.
