PICKERING -- Residents will have to swim
in their own backyard pools or head toward
the lake if they want to cool off outdoors in
Pickering this summer.
The Toronto and Region Conservation said
in a press release that access to the pool at Pet-
ticoat Creek Conservation Area in Pickering
is closed this season due to construction and
will open for the 2011 swimming season.
Last year, the TRCA was thrilled to announce
the renovation of the longtime Pickering sum-
mer staple, thanks to multi-million dollar gov-
ernment funding, specifically from the Recre-
ational Infrastructure Canada in Ontario and
Ontario Recreation Programs.

WATER RESCUE
Ajax father, son get that sinking feeling
Rescue crews
worked together
to tow their boat
back to safety
in Whitby
PARVANEH PESSIAN
ppessian@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- David and Con-
nor Reynolds were enjoying a
peaceful afternoon out on the
lake together when suddenly
their boat began sinking.
It was only the fourth time
on the water for the father and
son when they found them-
selves stranded 1.5 miles off the
Whitby coast at about 2:30 p.m.
on July 27.
“The boat started vibrating
quite heavily so we anchored up
to go have a look and we noticed
there was lots of water coming
in from the back of the engine,”
said Mr. Reynolds, who moved
to Ajax from England a month
ago and just purchased the boat
last week.
“We started scooping the
water out but it wouldn’t come
out as fast as we needed.”
A distress signal was sent
out to rescue crews as the pair
attempted to bail out more than
a foot of water from the back of
the boat.
The Toronto marine unit, the
Trenton marine unit, Durham
Regional Police and Whitby Fire
and Emergency Services were
all involved in the rescue effort.
Two boats were sent to the
scene, according to Constable
Mark Williams of Toronto Police
Services.
“The boat was taking on
water. They pumped it out. The
Cobourg Coast Guard attended
the scene and towed the ves-
sel back to Whitby,” Const. Wil-
liams said.
Dave Selby, spokesman for
Durham Regional Police, said
the Toronto service was called
because Durham’s boat wasn’t
in the water.
Mr. Reynolds and his son were
out on the lake for a total of
about three hours and waited
about 20 minutes to be rescued.
“I was shaking a lot,” said
Connor, 10, explaining how he
jumped to action helping his
father use a bucket to unload
the water.
The experience won’t stop
him from returning out on a
boat again though, he added.
“I think I’m going to be alright
as long as that boat has had
a good checkup to make sure
it’s OK because ... it was quite
nerve-wracking.”
Both wanted to thank the res-
cue crews for responding so
quickly and ensuring their safe
return to shore.
“Without those guys, you
wouldn’t be seeing that boat
here,” said Mr. Reynolds.
“You’d be seeing that boat at
the bottom of the water so we’re
very, very fortunate.”

incident
PICKERING -- Durham
police have arrested an
18-year-old Pickering
man in connection with
a street-level robbery in
early July.
On Thursday, July 8 at
around 3:15 a.m. two 17-
year-old girls walking on
Steeple Hill near Kingston
Road were approached by
a man, who told them to
remain calm and revealed
a handgun tucked into his
pants, police say.
The suspect demand-
ed money from them,
but when he discovered
the teenage girls had no
money, he fled the scene,
and there were no inju-
ries, police say.
The police street level
robbery unit arrested a
man without incident at
his residence on July 22
as a result of the ongoing
investigation.
William Shoniker, of
Rouge Valley Drive in
Pickering, is charged with
two counts each of rob-
bery, firearm use in com-
mission of an offence,
weapons dangerous and
carrying a concealed
weapon. He was held for a
bail hearing.
The weapon used in
the incident hasn’t been
recovered.

DURHAM -- Angus is so
terrified that his caregivers
refer to him as “catatonic.”
The golden doodle is
one of 17 severely neglect-
ed dogs rescued by local
OSPCA officers on July 16.
Animal cruelty investiga-
tor Debby Houghton said
the dogs were discovered in
a north Oshawa barn, after
officials “received some
information” about the
property.
“The dogs were starv-
ing and covered in feces
and urine when they were
found,” Ms. Houghton said.
“There was no natural light
in the barn, the windows
were covered in cobwebs.”
The dogs -- which include
a golden doodle, chihua-
hua, standard poodle, lab-
radoodle, golden retriever
and terrier -- were likely
being used for breeding,
Ms. Houghton says.
All 17 dogs were surren-
dered by their owner. After
the animals were examined,
it was discovered most suf-
fered from lice, eye infec-
tions and ear infections.
An investigation is under-
way, but no charges have
been laid.
Officials don’t know how
long the dogs were in the
barn, but if their reaction
to the outside world is any
indication, it was a while.
“When some of the dogs
got outside, they were
squinting as if they hadn’t
seen sunlight in a long
time,” Ms. Houghton said.
“They’re very timid and
afraid, they don’t know how
to be around people.”
The dogs are currently
in the care of the Durham
Humane Society, but none
of them are being kept at
the temporary Oshawa
shelter.
Ten are at animal services
locations in Brampton and
Uxbridge and the rest are in
temporary foster homes.
All the dogs will soon be
available for adoption, but
Ms. Houghton cautions that
they will need special care,
because they aren’t used to
being around people and
aren’t house trained.
Anyone interested in
adopting one of the dogs
can contact the society at
905-433-2022.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Hot weather hikes bacterial levels at beaches
MANDI HARGRAVE
mhargrave@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Lake Ontario has a
dirty image and there’s a reason for
it.
The noticeable stench and visible
algae turn most people away from
the thought of taking a refreshing
swim on a hot day in this Great
Lake. But children are children and
where there’s water, they will play.
As we near the end of July, more
of Durham’s beaches are begin-
ning to face elevated levels of E. coli
and other bacteria, making them
unsafe for swimming or bathing.
This is normal, said a public health
inspector with Durham Region.
“As we move through the sum-
mer, as the water heats up, as we
have heavy rainfall events, things
like that, you will see more and
more beaches posted,” said Mike
Pittman, a senior public health
inspector with the Region. “At the
beginning of the season, they’re
probably all open and looking
good. As we move through the
summer into August, you’ll proba-
bly see the majority of them posted
at one time or another.”
Students working in the public
health department over the sum-
mer conduct weekly testing at all
14 Durham beaches.
“So we go out about 15 metres
into the water, usually between
knee and hip height and then we
use our reaching poles to get a
further sample of the water,” said
Nadia Kyerematen. “We measure
about 15 to 30 centimetres below
the water and there is a specif-
ic type of pattern that we need to
do it in. It’s not just go collect and
come back. There’s specific ways
we need to do it to make sure we
get an accurate sample.”
Each beach is separated into five
sections, allowing for a more accu-
rate reading than taking just one
sample.
The results are posted online on
Friday and a sign is also posted on
the beach if it has been deemed
unsafe for swimming or bathing.
However, many residents enjoy-
ing the sun at Lakeview Beach in
Oshawa recently had a hard time
spotting the sign.
“There are none as far as I
can see,” said Gail Gushue, who
brought her granddaughters to
the beach. “I’ve just come right
from the car, didn’t see one sign,
not a sign anywhere ... Absolutely
should be more prominent. Then
you can make your own decision
as to whether you’re swimming or
not.”
Even so, once they found out the
beach was posted, not many par-
ents, babysitters or grandparents
were too worried about it.
“I’m not concerned about it. I
can take them home and we’ll
bath them, put them in the show-
er, they’ll be fine,” said Shelley Phil-
lips, a babysitter.
“She’ll be fine swimming in the
water,” said Mrs. Gushue of her
eldest granddaughter. “She’s not
drinking it, she’s being very careful
and staying in the shallow end so
she’s okay.”
In Ontario, the Province has high-
er standards of acceptable levels of
E. coli and other bacteria than in
other provinces and even in other
countries.
“In Ontario, the level is 100 E. coli
per sample, in Canada it’s actually
200,” said Mr. Pittman. “There are
places in Europe that will accept
500 and even 1,000 E. coli. So our
standards in Ontario are quite
stringent.”
The Region also cautions people
against swimming in area beach-
es after a heavy rainfall as there is
likely to be a higher presence of E.
coli within the first 48 hours after
the rain has fallen.
“A lot of animal feces or dirt from
the roadways and things like that
gets washed into the lakes and it
ends up elevating the E. coli levels,”
said Mr. Pittman. “So after a heavy
rainfall event, we advise people to
wait about 48 hours before they go
into the water. Also on windy days
when the water is being stirred up
a lot because of wave action. If you
go into the water to your waist and
you cannot see your feet, we advise
you not to swim. Just because
there’s a lot of turbidity and again
the E. coli levels will be quite high.”
Residents are encouraged to visit
the Region’s site before heading
out to area beaches. The sample
results are also posted on durham-
region.com every Friday.

SUMMER SAFETY
Enjoy the thrill of the grill safely
Home barbecues
can be fire hazards
warn Durham
officials
JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Summer’s here and
the time is right for grilling up
some meat.
But take care if you’re cooking
with gas. Propane is highly com-
bustible and it’s important to be
sure you’re barbecuing safely,
Durham fire officials warn.
That includes checking both
the equipment you’re using --
your barbecue and propane con-
tainer -- and following simple
safety procedures, they say.
“Regular maintenance, fire
prevention and early detection
are key to the safe use of pro-
pane tanks,” said Shawna Coul-
ter, public education officer with
Whitby Fire and Emergency Ser-
vices.
Home barbecues and propane
tanks bring with them the poten-
tial for fires and injury. Ms. Coul-
ter said the Whitby fire depart-
ment responds to an average of
eight to 15 calls a year related
either to propane tank and bar-
becue fires, or incidents in which
propane tanks have been com-
promised in a fire or caused fire
to spread as a result of improper
storage.
Whitby fire responded recent-
ly to a call in which a deck was
damaged in a blaze linked to a
barbecue. And on July 19, Ajax
firefighters had a call on Hum-
phrey Drive in which a person
sustained burns in a flash fire
while grilling.
Ajax Chief Fire Prevention Offi-
cer Keith Doucette said the bar-
becue, which was less than a
month old, caught fire soon after
the owner had changed propane
tanks and lit the burner. The
owner sustained burns to his
arm and a neighbour rushed in
to extinguish the blaze, he said.
The fire didn’t spread beyond
the barbecue.
The grill has been sent to the
Technical Standards and Safety
Association for testing for design
flaws, but it’s also possible there
was a problem with the way in
which it was assembled, Mr.
Doucette said.
Such calls are not out of the
ordinary, especially during the
summer, he said.
“We do get a number of them,”
Mr. Doucette said. “It’s not too
common, but it’s something that
happens.”
Fire officials recommend that
backyard chefs regularly check
their barbecues and tanks for
propane leaks and perform
maintenance, including clean-
ing grills and taking care when
lighting them.
FAST FACTS OF GRILLING
Enjoy yourself while barbecuing this
summer, but be sure to stay safe. Whitby
Fire public education officer Shawna
Coulter provided these tips:
• Take the time now to inspect your
barbecue and propane tank. Make sure
all parts of burners are clear of rust, dirt,
cobwebs and blockages. Check that the
hose is in good condition. Check for signs
of damage, cracks or loose connections.
A damaged or cracked hose can send
out a jet of propane that, if ignited, could
result in a flame several feet long.
• Check cylinder connections and
hoses for leaks by brushing a 50/50 mix
of liquid soap and water onto all connec-
tions and hoses. Rising bubbles when
you turn on the valve indicate a leak.
Tighten connections or repair the hose
until there are no bubbles.
• It is better to be cautious by replac-
ing parts you are concerned about. Parts
for barbecues are readily available at
most hardware stores. Propane cylin-
ders must be inspected and requalified
or replaced every 10 years.
• If you are uncomfortable perform-
ing safety checks and repairing or replac-
ing components, contact a certified fuel
appliance repair person. Check the Yel-
low Pages or call TSSA at 416-734-3300
or 1877-682-8772.
• Damaged bottles must be safely
disposed of. This can be done at the
Durham Region transfer station which is
equipped to handle hazardous material.
The transfer station is located on Ritson
Road north of Taunton Road in Oshawa.
• Proper placement of barbecues
and tanks are important to preventing a
fire and from limiting the damage it may
cause to your home or property should
one start. Propane and charcoal grills
should only be used outdoors. Indoor
usage in garages, sheds and homes
not only represent a serious fire risk but
also cause the build-up of potential fatal
levels of carbon monoxide, an odourless,
colourless and tasteless gas. Barbecues
should be placed well away from the
home, deck and railings, and out from
under eaves.
• Propane tanks should never be
stored in the home or attached garage.
Outdoor sheds are preferred with ventila-
tion. Transport a propane cylinder safely
by placing it in a secure, upright position
with the safety valve on top.
• Keep your grill clean by removing
grease or fat buildup from the grills and
in trays below the grill. Never throw
water on a grease fire; this can cause
the fire to grow and splatter, causing
severe burns.
METROLAND
DURHAM-- Propane tanks

There’s a reason that
‘progressive’ was dropped
from Conservative badge
To the editor:
With respect to Mr. Toews’ recent visit
to Pickering campaigning for the federal
Conservative candidate, I was surprised
to read that he said, “for the last 40 years,
the government has put the rehabilitation
of offenders first and public safety second,”
and sees no correlation between a drop-
ping crime rate and rehabilitation efforts.
A logical person would think that treat-
ing an infection with antibiotics, thereby
assisting with healing, is a much better tac-
tic than ignoring the infection and then
having a person end up in the hospital with
huge costs being borne by taxpayers.
The two-for-one offset for time served
originates in the deplorable state of our
jails and not in a policy of rehabilitation.
Perhaps more funding from the feds for
additional court, health and social servic-
es would be a wiser use of taxpayer money
than building more prisons. The party
dropped “Progressive” from their name for
a reason that is becoming more obvious
the longer they are in power.

Kindness to a stranger
is appreciated
To the editor:
On July 9, I had gone to the TD ABM at
375 Kingston Rd. to make a withdrawal. No
money came out yet it withdrew from my
account. My first impulse was to call the
number on the ABM but I didn’t have my
cellphone with me.
The drycleaners next door was open, so
I asked if I could borrow their phone, and
without hesitation the man handed me the
phone. As he heard me telling my husband
what happened, the man went into his own
pocket and wanted to give me the money
that I tried to withdraw. He said I could pay
him later. I have never been into this dry-
cleaners, and here was this man helping a
complete stranger. I was just taken aback at
the gesture and the kindness that still exists
in some people. I just wanted to share my
story as all we hear are the bad things that
happen in this world. I most certainly will
be taking my drycleaning to Atlantis Dry
Cleaners in the future.

BIG PIPE
Don’t residents make
decisions in a democracy?
To the editor:
Am I the only one who has noticed
recently that the York-Durham sanitary
sewage expansion directly contradicts the
concept of democracy?
Pickering residents are opposed to the
pipe, and rightly so. This pipe will pump
almost one billion litres of York Region’s
raw sewage per day through our town. Yet
despite the fact that Pickering residents are
so opposed to the Big Pipe, it is still going
to be built. I ask, why?
Don’t teenagers like me learn in civ-
ics class that in Canada the citizens are
the ones who make the decisions through
democracy? If so, then why are so many
dissenting voices simply ignored by the
powers that be?
I for one am opposed to a billion litres
per day of someone else’s raw sewage flow-
ing underneath our lovely homes, parks
and streets. I encourage everyone reading
this letter to take only half an hour out of
their day to write a letter or e-mail to the
Durham Regional council, urging them to
withdraw their support for the Big Pipe.
Together, we can make our voices heard
and save our community from another
region’s unwanted wastes.
After all, isn’t that what democracy is all
about?

Make the most of Durham Region beaches while you can
In Durham Region, it would seem, you
can lead the residents to water but you
can’t necessarily make them swim in it.
Such is the case at a number of beaches
along the Lake Ontario shore in Durham
Region that have been posted as safe for
swimming, but which don’t attract many
residents into the lake. And as the summer
wears on and bacteria levels climb due to
warmer water, rainfall runoff and other fac-
tors, fewer beaches are expected to remain
open for swimmers.
The region is home to a host of wonder-
fully scenic and welcoming waterfront
parks and green areas that draw residents
in great numbers. But past years of poor
water stewardship, a stubborn reputation
for high pollution levels in Lake Ontar-
io and the lure of cleaner water in cottage
country led to local beaches being vastly
under-used. Better oversight and atten-
tion in recent years, collective efforts to
reduce pollution and mitigate the effects of
harmful runoff have given some cause for
optimism, reflected in more days in which
beaches are ‘open’ for swimming.
For their part, Durham health officials
dutifully and carefully test the water at
local beaches on a weekly basis, collect-
ing samples and measuring E. coli bacteria
counts to determine if individual beaches
are safe for swimming.
Residents in Durham can enjoy the very
best that summer has to offer right here at
home. Check the weekly statistics posted
by Durham Region officials to see if your
local beach is posted as safe for swimming
and make an effort to experience true
waterfront fun and frolic.
As well, this paper also posts beach
results every Friday and you can check out
the map listing all local beaches at dur-
hamregion.com
And take the opportunity to engage your
neighbours and friends in making Dur-
ham’s beaches a more popular local des-
tination. Greater awareness and participa-
tion among residents will encourage great-
er oversight and promote improved stew-
ardship of Durham Region’s waterfront
areas.
From Pickering to Clarington, Durham
residents have an impressive choice of
community waterfront areas to visit and
experience.
Pack a lunch, take a chair, invite friends
and family and test drive one of the local
beaches.
You’ll likely be surprised at the pristine
beauty of the greenspaces, the peaceful
splendour of the shade trees and the hot
sand of the local beach.
It’s not often that one can make this sug-
gestion and feel good about it: Go jump in
the lake!

Fears were swarming in the com-
munity prior to the announcement
that the pool might shut down due
to outdated mechanics and infra-
structure.
The TRCA had anticipated open-
ing the pool by summer 2010, but
those plans have been delayed,
partly due to discussions surround-
ing possible partnership opportu-
nities with the City of Pickering.
Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bon-
nie Littley, who sits on the TRCA
board and its audit committee,
said although the City hasn’t com-
mitted to a financial partnership,
the conservation authority has
decided to go ahead with the proj-
ect itself, but may still seek funding
from Pickering.
“I think we should look at par-
ticipating financially in that proj-
ect because it does benefit the resi-
dents of Pickering,” she said.
Coun. Littley said there are some
opportunities for Pickering if it
chooses to invest, such as convert-
ing some of TRCA’s nearby table-
land to soccer pitches.
“We’re turning 500 kids away a
year for soccer,” she said.
Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill
McLean noted the expansion is
positive, but said at the time of the
project announcement, the TRCA
“forgot to mention that they want-
ed a million dollars from the City.
“I’m not averse to it but there has
to be more discussion on it,” he
said.
Petticoat is Pickering’s only out-
door pool. The Pickering Recre-
ation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm
Rd., has an indoor pool and the
other City pool is located at Dun-
barton High School, 655 Sheppard
Ave. E.
There’s also a splash pad at Mil-
lennium Square Park, at the foot of
Liverpool Road.
When Petticoat reopens, the new
facility will include an aquatic play-
ground including sprayers, buck-
ets, cannons, ladders, stairs and
sunning decks with cooling mist
tubes.
It will accommodate more than
800 swimmers at a time.
The play facility and pool will use
green technologies such as energy-
efficient components and water
conservation techniques.
Crews are demolishing the exist-
ing pool, plumbing and mechani-
cal infrastructure.
The redevelopment will include
regrading and earth work, a new
deck, renovations to the wash-
rooms and other facilities, includ-
ing landscaping and a snack bar.
TRCA spokeswoman Rowena
Calpito said the entrance fee to
the new facility is not expected
to change and should remain at
$3.75.
Pickering swimming rates and
hours can be found online or by
calling the rec complex.

Teenager
earning his pilot’s
licence through
Air Cadet
program
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- While some
high school students might
take off during the summer,
Boris Dyakov does it literal-
ly.
The 17-year-old Claremont
resident is working toward
getting his pilot’s licence
through a Power Pilot Schol-
arship program offered
by the Royal Canadian Air
Cadets.
It’s the second straight
summer the flight sergeant
has taken to the air. He
earned his glider’s licence
last summer, taking a six-
week course at Trenton.
This year, he’s in the pro-
cess of getting a seven-week
course in Windsor and at
the end, he’ll be licensed by
Transport Canada as a pri-
vate pilot.
A member of 856 Squadron
of the Air Cadets in Pickering,
Boris recently completed his
first solo flight, flying a Cess-
na 172 Skyhawk.
He admits to being a lit-
tle nervous before his solo,
but adds, “I think I was pret-
ty well prepared for it. I had
good instructors. It was very
exciting, nonetheless.”
He began flying shortly
after arriving in Windsor in
late June. Following a few
hours of dual instruction, it
was time for his solo. Accord-
ing to Captain Steve Ste-
phenson, the group’s senior
supervisory officer, Boris
was able to take off and land
without aid or instruction.
Cadets won’t get to bask
in the glow of their achieve-
ment for long though, Capt.
Stephenson says. Following
a quick check ride with their
instructors, the cadets were
sent right back up to do it all
over again.
Todd Johnson, the chief
flying instructor with the
Windsor Flying Club, says,
“These guys are amazing
people. The club members
and the instructors are very
impressed with how much
material they’ve been able to
absorb in such a short period
of time.”
Boris is one of 77 cadets
chosen to take part in the
program. Capt. Stephen-
son notes, “The cadets go
through a screening pro-
cess prior to selection that
includes school marks, inter-
views and aviation related
examinations.”
About 200 cadets take part
in the Power Pilot Scholar-
ship program each year and
it’s funded by the Depart-
ment of National Defense.
There is no obligation for the
cadets to join the Canadian
Forces but many do.
Boris joined the air cadets
because “I heard you can get
a pilot’s licence for free. In
Grade 7, I looked it up and
found it. I’ve been doing it
ever since.”
As for a career in the mili-
tary, “I’m considering it as
an option, but not as a pilot.
It’s an idea right now. I’m not
thinking of a career as a pilot.
It’s more of a hobby thing.”
He’s going into Grade 12 at
Brebeuf College in Toronto.
He’s eyeing taking sciences
or engineering at university.
“That’s where I’m heading
right now.”
He arrived in Windsor on
June 27 and will be there
for seven weeks, return-
ing home on Aug. 13. While
there, the cadets are stay-
ing at a St. Clair College resi-
dence. They’re on a scholar-
ship, which includes room
and board, and meals, as
well as a $10 a day per diem.
He did his solo in a Cessna
172 airplane. “It’s the most
popular, most produced
plane in the world. It’s what
people train in because it’s
the most popular.”
As for moving up in air-
craft, he says, “I would like to
eventually.”
When he returns home, he
expects to fly Cessnas out of
the Oshawa airport.

BUSINESS
Pickering-based eco program expanding
Green initiative
celebrates 100th
member, gains
international
members
KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- It’s time for com-
panies to get green and get mov-
ing, says a local business owner.
“Do something today, not
tomorrow,” said Neil Samson, co-
owner of Monarch Kitchen and
Bath Centre in Pickering.
Monarch, a contracting com-
pany that installs kitchens and
bathrooms, was the first business
to join Durham Sustain Ability’s
EcoBusiness program in 2007.
DSA is a Durham-wide, non-
profit organization that helps
communities, schools, business-
es and individuals become more
sustainable. The EcoBusiness
program is cost-free and provides
tools for businesses to become
greener and more successful.
DSA recently celebrated its
100th EcoBusiness member,
Ajax-based Search Engine Peo-
ple Inc., Canada’s largest search
marketing firm that was recent-
ly named one of Canada’s fastest
growing companies for the sec-
ond straight year by Profit 100.
Mr. Samson, who was a pioneer
of EcoBusiness, helped conduct
a seminar recently along with
DSA at his store where the mile-
stone was celebrated, and he and
waste and recycle experts shared
insight into making businesses
more sustainable.
“We had just over 40 people
attend, which was great,” said
DSA public relations coordinator
Rachael Wraith.
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan also
accepted a certificate on behalf of
the City for being the first munic-
ipality to get involved.
The program encourages busi-
ness to sign up and become
involved in green initiatives in
the areas of transportation and
equipment, energy, water, and
pollution and waste reduction
and conservation.
Ms. Wraith explained getting
involved can reduce energy and
operating costs, encourage sales
and customer loyalty, enhance
reputations and create great con-
nections with like-minded busi-
ness owners.
Members are encouraged to
take actions that can be low-,
medium- or high-cost, such as
encouraging employees to car-
pool to work, installing low-flow
toilets or automatic water faucets
in bathrooms or investing in low-
energy appliances or solar panel
roofing.
“There’s so many things they
can do that are no cost,” Mr. Sam-
son said.
For example, employees can
take waste-free lunches to work
and turn off lights when they’re
not needed. If companies don’t
have a green bin or recycling,
they can take their recyclables or
organic waste home and dispose
of them there, he suggested.
Mr. Samson decided to go green
in 2007 when he was told, along
with a number of other business
owners, that green is the way of
the future, and that businesses
can either go green or go under.
“I was one of the biggest gar-
bage creators around,” he said,
noting that’s often the case with
contracting companies.
But things have changed since
the green light went on in his
head.
“My daughter now calls me
‘Captain Planet’,” he said.
Instead of taking everything to
the dump in one big dumpster
that would normally go to land-
fill, his business sorts everything,
such as metal and wood, and
takes it to the recycling plant on
Squires Beach Road.
“We recycle everything,” he
said. “Everything that is humanly
possible to recycle, we recycle.”
DSA now has businesses regis-
tered in the program from Singa-
pore and South Africa.
“It is becoming far-reaching and
we’d like to see it grow beyond
Durham Region and continue to
grow in Durham Region as well,”
Ms. Wraith said.

ACCIDENT
Car crashes into front doors
of Ajax Nokia building
Police say no
injuries reported
REKA SZEKELY
rszekely@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- A car crashed through
the front doors of an Ajax office
building on Wednesday morn-
ing, leaving behind mangled
metal and broken glass.
It happened at 12:20 p.m. at the
Nokia building at 601 Westney
Rd. S.
“Fire and ambulance respond-
ed, but we called them off
because there were no inju-
ries, fortunately,” said Durham
police’s Sergeant Nancy van
Rooy.
A Hyundai Accent at the scene
had a damaged front bumper
and yellow caution tape cor-
doned off the front entrance to
the building. A worker could be
seen sweeping up the glass.
“There’s extensive damage to
the building,” said Sgt. van Rooy.
The incident is under investi-
gation by police.
These types of accidents are
not uncommon and without
commenting specifically on
Wednesday’s incident, Sgt. van
Rooy said this type of collision is
usually unintentional.
“It seems to be human error.
It seems to be that confusion
between gas and brake ... some-
times it’s medical episodes,” she
said.

DURHAM SYNCHRO
Locals swim off to Sweden
Eight Durham
Synchro athletes
and a coach
cross the pond
SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Members of the
Durham Syncro masters team
are taking their talents across the
pond.
Eight club swimmers are among
a group that will be competing
at the XIII FINA World Masters
Championships 2010 in Sweden,
which runs from July 27 to Aug. 7,
according to the event website.
Coach Holley Lundmark will
accompany Whitby’s Lauren LeP-
age, Oshawa’s Jenilee Keserling
and Lindsay MacLean, Picker-
ing’s Kirsten Femson along with
Amy Levine, Laura Mouck, Melis-
sa Dermody and Meaghan Hart-
well, to the event.
So how did it all come togeth-
er?
“Every two years its a worlds
year and so two years ago we
actually had a masters team that
went to Australia and this time its
in Sweden,” Lundmark began.
“An old swimmer of mine who
coaches at the club wanted to get
a bunch of her swimmers togeth-
er and my old swimmers together
and put a team together to go to
Sweden.”
So they did.
But not before having to file an
application to attend and then
register the swimmers and coach-
es.
With the paperwork done, the
focus is now squarely on increas-
ing the team’s chances of placing
well in Sweden.
Getting a gauge on how good
they can be has been tough, says
Lundmark, noting that up until
the last few weeks, the girls, who
have about a 10 year age gap, only
spend one day a week for three
hours together in the pool.
“It leaves a lot of stuff to do in
a short amount of time,” admits
Lundmark.
But thanks to an increased
practice schedule throughout the
month of June, the coach is confi-
dent her team is ready to put forth
their best effort in Sweden, one
she hopes will result in at least a
top three finish for the club.
The competition will be tough,
however. Two years ago in Aus-
tralia few teams competed due
to the high cost of travel, howev-
er, Lundmark says some 33 teams
are registered in their catego-
ry and with only one swim time
guaranteed, little room for error
exists.
While the event opens on July
27, the opening ceremonies
aren’t being held until July 30 in
Goteborg and the synchronized
swimming competitors won’t hit
the pool until Aug. 2. at the Aby
Swimming Arena in Molndal.

Waterloo
WATERLOO -- Pickering’s Pound
for Pound Mix Martial Arts club,
specializing in Muay Thai, Bra-
zilian Jui Jit Sui, Boxing and Tra-
ditional Jui Jit Sui, carried on its
winning streak as they invaded
Waterloo’s St. George banquet
hall with two of their athletes.
Tristan Kalijundic, a super-
welterweight, and Jason Hinds,
a welterweight, both put on a
magnificent display of Muay
Thai skills as they both scored
knock downs en route to unani-
mous decision victories. Their
victory was not a shock to their
coaches considering what both
athletes have achieved the week-
end before when they ventured
to Des Moines, Iowa to take part
in the Thai Boxing Association
World Championship.
Pound for Pound sent out six
athletes to compete, and had all
of them return with hardware.
Misa Geeverghese, a junior
cruiserweight girl, and Pat-
rick Reece, a senior super-light-
weight. both returned with
bronze medals. Jordan Henwood,
a super-middleweight, Matt Ken-
dall, a light-middleweight and
Tristan Kalijundic, a super-wel-
terweight, returned with silver
medals. Jason Hinds continued
to show why he makes eyebrows
raise as he came back with the
TBA World Championship belt
wrapped around his waist.
Both Muay Thai coaches, Ritch
Cruz and Saji Bolo Geeverghese,
were at both events for their ath-
letes and commented on the
months of preparation that goes
into developing these young
athletes so they may come out
with such fine performances.
More than 350 athletes showed
up at the three day event, fight-
ing down to the finals on Sun-
day where Pound for Pound had
qualified four of their athletes in
those finals.
Injuries prevented Matt Ken-
dall and Jordan Heywood from
taking world championships, but
both fought on gallantly. Hey-
wood, with a swollen ankle that
had him collapse in the middle
of the third round, forced the
fight to an additional round just
to decide who would be cham-
pion. Kendall, who had hurt his
knee in the initial stage of the
competition, fought on one leg
all the way to the finals to win his
silver medal.
“Our athletes understand that
conditioning is key and tech-
nique is the lifeline to success,”
says Bolo Geeverghese.
The club has resident world
champions in Brazilian Jui Jit Sui
as well.

triOS College Offi cially
Opens New Oshawa Campus
triOS College offi cially opened their new Oshawa
campus on Thursday, June 24 at 200 John Street. From
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., current and positional students as well
as members of the public were invited to come out and
celebrate the opening. Staff were on hand to provide
tours of the fantastic new facility, which includes state-
of-the-art classrooms, a new testing centre, a spacious
student common, easier transit, plenty of parking and
more.
Oshawa Deputy Mayor Nester Pidwerbecki
helped triOS College CEO Frank Gerencser and Oshawa
Campus Director Deborah Jollymore cut the ribbon to
offi cially open the campus.
“There has been a lot of planning and
consideration that has gone into our new Oshawa
campus,” says Frank Gerencser, CEO of triOS College.
“Being a part of the Durham community is so important
to us and we feel this new campus is a great addition to
the Midtown Mall.”
The student body at triOS College has grown
so rapidly that their former location could no longer
accommodate them.
triOS College is a private career college recognized
by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and
Universities, the largest Canadian owned Private Career
College and the fastest growing, with campuses from
Windsor to Oshawa.
Several of the diploma programs at triOS College
include industry internships. The faculty includes
experienced instructors with years of teaching and
work experience. Friendly and dedicated, the staff and
faculty at triOS College focus on helping their students
succeed. Classes are small and hands-on and contain
industry-leading curriculum. Here, students can look
forward to concentrated, focused learning, one course
at a time. Programs start every month, so students can
enroll at any time of the year.
Interested applicants are encouraged to call triOS
College and come in to write the admissions assessment.
Once the assessment is completed, prospective
students are assisted in choosing a program that is best
suited for their strengths. All applicants must be at least
18 years of age or have a high school diploma or its
equivalent, and many current students have diplomas
and degrees. A variety of fi nancial assistance programs
are available to students.
The student body is refl ective of its community.
The average age of students attending triOS College is
29, and students range in age from their early twenties
up to their late fi fties.
“At triOS College we have great students that will
make great employees,” says Frank.
