PEOPLE 4 Pokemon card shark Pickering youth off to Hawaii SPORTS 17 The man in stripes Pickering ref wins national award Work related to expansion of water pollution control plant KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It might look mysterious, but rest assured, there’s no oil drilling going on off the shores of Ajax. A barge several hundred metres off Rotary Park is drilling bore holes for Durham and York regions. It’s part of the work to expand the Duffin Creek water pollution control plant, locat- ed between the Pickering nuclear station and Rotary Park in Ajax. A new outflow pipe might be needed for the expanded plant, so the barge is needed to investigate soil condi- tions at the bottom of the lake. Jim McGilton, the manager of engineering planning and studies for Durham, says the barge has a drilling rig on top. “They’re drilling bore holes in the lake bot- tom. They want to find out the different types of soils and the depths of soils,” Mr. McGilton says. The regions have hired a geotechnical company to do the work. The barge will be drilling through the summer. “In the fall, the weather turns and the water conditions won’t allow them to work,” he states. “They’ll drill at various distances and graph the soil layers,” Mr. McGilton notes. “If they put an outfall in, they need to decide which soil layer it will be in. Different soils are easier to work in.” If tunnelling is done, “they need to know the exact depth and distance,” he adds. The outfall pipe carries effluent that’s been treated in the plant back out into the lake. An environmental assessment on whether to build a new outfall is expected to start this fall. “We need the preliminary information for the EA,” Mr. McGilton notes. “It’s possi- ble they’ll put a new outflow for the Duffin Creek water pollution control plant.” The hope is to have the EA work done by the end of the year, he says. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 2 2 , 2 0 1 0 2 AP LAKE ONTARIO Barge for bore holes sets up in Ajax RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND AJAX -- A barge platform off Rotary Park in Ajax is undertaking geotechnical investigations to gather information for the Duffins Creek water pollution control plant. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 2 2 , 2 0 1 0 3 AP WE CARRY BODY PARTS MON-FRI 8AM-5:30PM SAT 8AM-2PM PICKERING LOCATION1648 BAYLY ST. Complaints came to Transport Canada’s attention after residents noticed up to 100 truckloads of topsoil being dumped almost daily on Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson’s rental property. The land sits north of the home he also rents and lives in on the federal lands in north Pickering. Trans- port Canada, the owners of the Crown land - which was bought and leased out by the feds nearly 40 years ago for a possible airport - is looking into the matter. Coun. Johnson, who said he’s farmed all of his life, was granted the permit to place top- soil on the land for agricultural purposes. “Transport Canada’s consent was made subject to specific terms and conditions, including the requirement that the tenant comply with all laws and obtain all necessary permits and approvals that may be required by any municipality, or by provincial and fed- eral governments and agencies in connec- tion with the topsoil operation,” Transport Canada spokesman Jeremy Link said in an e- mail. Neil Carroll, Pickering director of planning and development, confirmed Coun. Johnson has a City permit for the topsoil, and it’s mon- itored regularly. Coun. Johnson, who has an agriculture diploma from the University of Guelph, said he’s rented the land for 35 years, four of which he’s been replacing the soil that was removed before he retained it, hoping to make the land workable. He also owns a farm on the Pickering- Uxbridge Townline, where he runs a fire- wood operation. The “number-one” topsoil is from York Region, and is soil-tested. He said he’s turned down offers to take below-grade fill from sub- divisions. He doesn’t deny the number of trucks driv- ing down Brock Road each day. “Some days you might get 20, 30 trucks, other days you might get 100,” he said, add- ing issues regarding a few speeding drivers will be addressed, and all the fill should be moved in within the next month, weather permitting. If Transport Canada deems the opera- tion inappropriate, Coun. Johnson could be asked to stop, reduce the size of the operation or address specific concerns, Mr. Link said. “Transport Canada is consulting with sub- ject matter experts and stakeholders includ- ing the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the City of Pickering,” he said. Transport Canada is also looking into con- cerns regarding noise, dust, road residue, odour, and traffic congestion. Coun. Johnson feels the issue is being raised suspiciously close to the upcoming election. “This didn’t occur until last month or so,” he said. Resident Mary Delaney of Land Over Land- ings, a group opposed to an airport and in support of the land being used for farming, said “that bothers us.” She said Coun. Johnson should be prepared to answer questions regarding a change to the land that’s so dear to many residents in Brougham and Claremont. “That is exactly our job to monitor the goings on of these lands,” she said, adding the group didn’t know the land was rented by Coun. Johnson when members began asking questions. In fact at first, they assumed it was Trans- port Canada, she said. Ms. Delaney appreciates Transport Canada investigating, but feels the community should have been informed of the operation sooner, and Land Over Landings still has concerns with Transport Canada’s permit. Coun. Johnson’s crops this year are grain corn, and have been soy bean in the past. Ms. Delaney said she doesn’t blame Coun. Johnson for farming grain feed specifically, but Land Over Landings is interested in food- specific agriculture. Coun. Johnson didn’t say how much he receives for the loads, but said “we have an arrangement.” COUN. A friend joined me and we picked up a lunch and settled to eat on a blanket on the bank. We were forced to move twice from both the grassy area and the sand after receiving nasty stinging bites from ants. My marks have disappeared but my friend is still covered with bright red spots were he was bitten. Having never encountered this in previ- ous years I would like to warn parents to be careful of their children in the area. Helen van Veen Toronto We need more natural meadows to save the butterflies To the editor: I’m very sorry to hear that some residents feel that a field of natural plants growing to their natural height at maturity in a field designated as a butterfly meadow should be mowed down. Complaints about see- ing few butterflies and the weeds being an “eyesore” are the perfect reason to just scrap the whole project. Guess what? Monarch butterflies are quickly becoming extirpated in this prov- ince due to thinking like yours. The mono- culture of fertilized grass you call your front lawn, or even the large fields of one species of crop seen north of this city, are exactly the reasons why you are not seeing more of these insects. Milkweed has been deemed “ugly” or “undesirable” by people with your thinking and as such we are seeing fewer and fewer butterflies every year. We need more meadows like this to encourage not just butterflies but other organisms to reside and thrive nearby. They say they understand the benefits of naturalizing areas, but it cannot be in their backyard. Maybe you would like to trade houses with someone living near the high- way, or perhaps a busy railway because you cannot be bothered to buy antihista- mines, which are readily accessible, and your treatable allergies are more important than an entire species. I applaud the City for establishing such a project in the first place. Who knew we had such modern thinkers in this town? They should improve public awareness on these matters. I’m sure the mentality of “cut-it-and- pave-it” (as one reader put it, with regards to the Durham Regional council) would be better use of the field. Oh, but then we would have to hear your complaints of the “earsore” caused by the construction of another subdivision. Cam Meirik Pickering GOVERNMENT Federal Conservatives just as much to blame for HST To the editor: Re: ‘Don’t forget HST at election time’, let- ter to the editor, June 10. People who want to vote against the HST also need to vote against the federal Con- servative Party as well. They have just as much, if not more, involvement in this. If you want to play politics and vote against the Liberals that’s fine, but if you want to be honest and fair and vote against the provincial Liberals because of the HST then you have to vote against the federal Conservatives as well. As we’re now in the middle of Nation- al Drowning Prevention Week, marked during the third week of July by the Life- saving Society, it’s a good time for families to review their own water safety practises, in hope that no one else need suffer dev- astating loss. Across the province, there have been more than 40 drowning deaths between May 1 and July 17, compared to 35 in the same period last year. The society says approximately 500 Canadians lose their lives annually in water-related deaths. Behind the statistics are grieving families whose lives can be forever altered in just 10 seconds, the length of time it can take someone to drown. Here in Durham Region, this summer has included the heartbreaking news report of an 18-month-old toddler losing his life after being found in a pond at his Ajax home. Another boy, plucked unconscious from Lake Ontario by heroic bystanders at Oshawa’s Lakeview Park, was more fortu- nate. The child, from Pickering, is expected to make a full recovery. These are only two stories of drowning or near-drowning that have taken place this summer in pools, rivers, and lakes in Ontario. Accidents, by their very nature, are unpredictable. But, with lots of sunny warm days ahead of us, we urge everyone who’ll be spending time on or near water to keep safety precautions a top priority. The Lifesaving Society advocates all chil- dren be taught to swim. Adults are remind- ed to heed basic safety rules. Wear lifejack- ets while boating, and don’t mix alcohol with water sports. For parents, the Lifesaving Society offers further tips: • Stay within arms’ reach of children – don’t leave children unsupervised as drownings can occur in as little as 10 sec- onds. • Restrict access to backyard pools and ensure there is a lockable gate and fence around the entire perimeter of the pool. • Make sure children are wearing an approved lifejacket or personal flotation device when playing near water. • Lock all doors leading out to bodies of water and secure low windows that a child could crawl through. • Establish rules that children must fol- low when near water. • Closely supervise children with inflat- able toys. • Drain backyard wading pools and empty buckets of water when not in use. • Get trained. Enroll in a Lifesaving Society swimming and first-aid training course. Taking time to follow safety rules can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer. Councillors side with staff who say 2008 hike enough to absorb HST costs REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Pickering cab drivers will have to eat the cost of the HST. Recently, taxi driver Glenn Campbell presented the City with a petition signed by 39 drivers asking that the HST be added to the meter. However, Pickering staff have suggested increases in 2005 and 2008 are enough and pointed out the fares set in 2008 were based on the assump- tion that fuel would cost $1.35 a litre. Since then gas prices have fallen by a third, hovering around the $1 mark, and staff recommended that fares stay as they are. Mr. Campbell spoke at council on July 12 and pointed out that when the GST was introduced, it went on the meter. It should be same for the HST, he said. “Why should we subsidize a government tax from our income?” Mr. Campbell also argued that other municipalities, including Ajax, added the HST to the meter. But councillors sided with Pickering staff and refused to increase fares. “Do you not acknowledge with the lower gasoline prices there has to be a give and take somewhere here?” said Coun. Doug Dickerson. Mr. Campbell responded the increases were justified by the rising cost of living. Cab driver Kewal Manocha spoke against the increase, saying it would hurt his business rather than help. “I’m very comfortable saying we don’t need the increase,” he said. He also addressed the petition and said there were more than 100 taxi drivers in Pickering and not all of them supported the increase and 39 did not constitute a majority. Our firefighters do, our EMS guys, our police men and women keep us safe 24/7. We sometimes don’t think about it so we don’t give them the respect that they’re due,” said Mr. Ignatieff in an interview. But, while the recognition is always appre- ciated, the men and women in uniform don’t view themselves as heroes. “I don’t feel like I do anything special or out of the ordinary, just I love doing my job,” said Constable Jeffrey Williams. “It is nice to get the pat on the shoulder every once in a while from my community, that they are showing support for what we do and that they recognize we’re out there doing a hard job every day and we’re out there for them.” Second World War veteran Jan de Vries noted it was customary to join the war once a person was old enough. “I find (the recognition) odd because dur- ing the war everybody joined up, everybody that could and if you didn’t wear a uniform you’d be spit on.” During the barbecue a young boy, Connor McDowall, handed out Canadian flags with a special thank-you note attached to some of the veterans on hand. He wanted to thank the veterans because “they supported our country.” His mother, Dorothy McDowall, said through unexpected tears, “I wanted to bring my son today just to learn about (the wars), just to be able to know that (the ser- vice of soldiers) is really important and maybe when he grows up there won’t be any wars.” One of the veterans to receive a flag was impressed by Connor’s gesture. “It makes you feel real good to think that they remember and that they care, especial- ly this little fella... That’s what got me excited about it.” Since purchasing the currently unnamed six-year-old male zony, which arrived in Can- ada from Texas, Ms. Williams said she has already received numerous phone calls from people who have heard about it. The zony has been interacting with the other animals at the site, including seven horses, and has already become well acquainted with a pony named Munchkin. “The lady that I bought him from told me to try to get him a friend right away because he’ll be new in the herd and while his tem- perament is great, he still does have that wild side of the zebra in him,” Ms. Williams said, adding that she looks forward to training the zony at its new home. “We’ve been very careful about the horses and the ponies that we buy because we want everybody to feel really relaxed and have a lot of fun when they’re riding at Heartland.” Heartland Equestrian, at 9570 Duffs Rd. in Ashburn, has launched a “name the zony” contest for everyone in the community to participate in. The prize will be a free riding lesson and an opportunity to meet the zony. Research shows that we have the power to posi- tively infl uence brain function throughout life — a realization especially relevant for the more than 14 million baby boomers in Canada. Dr. Majid Fotuhi, leading neurologist and au- thor of “The Memory Cure,” debunks common myths about the brain and aging: 1. Brain growth stops after childhood. Research suggests that each time a new skill is learned, such as playing an instrument, speaking a for- eign language or even dancing, new pathways are formed and areas of the brain may grow, even well into the later years. 2. Once I start experiencing memory loss, there’s not much I can do. Lifestyle factors have all been shown to have positive effects on memory. One recent study showed that people with memory complaints who took algal DHA capsules for six months had almost double the reduction in errors on a test that measures learn- ing and memory, a benefi t roughly equivalent to having the memory of someone three years younger. Products enhanced with the same al- gal source of DHA used in the study, called life’sDHA, are now available. A listing of prod- ucts can be found online at lifesdha.com. 3. Memory problems mean Alzheimer’s disease. Many people worry that mild forgetfulness must be Alzheimer’s. Most are worrying needlessly – research shows that more than 80 percent of people will never get Alzheimer’s disease. TIP BOX: Tips to keep that brain tip top: • Exercise for at least 30 minutes, most days of the week. • Manage stress – laugh often. • Include algal DHA-rich foods or supplements in your diet. • Challenge yourself - learn something new each day. • Keep weight, blood pressure, cholesterol in check. Referees make mistakes. And if they are quality officials like Fox, they will even admit a faux pas to a coach. That approach is just one of the many reasons Fox is the recipient of the Allen G. Rae Builder Award from Sports Officials Canada that recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of sports offi- cials and the advancement of the sports officiating profession. “I was very surprised,” he says of getting a phone call in regards to being named the prestigious award recipient. “I think my fam- ily was shocked, surprised, but really happy for me. Knowing all the different work I have done over the years. “I was taken aback. I had no idea that something like that was coming.” The process began about six months ago when a fellow official asked Fox if he had a resumé out- lining his extensive background wearing the stripes. At the time, he had no idea the document would be submitted for consider- ation for the award. His resumé, built over more than 30 years, is impressive. He has officiated box and field lacrosse, both amateur and pro, including entering his 20th year in the National Lacrosse League. Among the highlights are working the gold medal game at the men’s U19 world championship in 1992, the men’s field world champi- onships in 1998 and 2003 and the men’s world indoor lacrosse championship. He has also spent time on the ice, officiating in and around Toronto in minor hock- ey and high school games in the area. He started officiating in the early 1970s while playing Jr. A lacrosse with the Lakeshore Maple Leafs. His high school, Danforth, pro- hibited junior players from play- ing on the school team, so he was asked to officiate instead. He continued playing, even winning a Mann Cup with the Brampton Excelsiors in 1980, then moved into coaching junior with the Toronto Beaches. “There came a point when I thought, OK, I’ve played, I’ve coached, I’m going to get into the officiating side of things a little more seriously,” he recalls. “Being an ex-player and coach, I can see the game from their side. I stayed in it because many times you have the best seat in the house. As a player and coach, you have a good understanding of how the game should be played. I have enjoyed staying involved in the game.” Like a player, he has worked hard at trying to move up to the highest level possible. Along the way he has learned a lot, includ- ing to develop a thick skin when players, coaches and fans don’t agree with a call, or second guess a non-call. “Sometimes you take things per- sonally. It’s just human nature” he admits. “A lot of times I like to think you have to have more guts than brains to be a referee. You have to have the guts at times to make that call. To go out in a pressure situation and say, ‘Well, this is the right call at that time of the game and it has to be made.’ There are times when you have to be firm and fair on both sides. “I think if you go out and give a good effort every game, you less- en the opportunity that people can get on your back. As long as you give an honest effort and work every game the same way -- if it’s a kids’ game you give it your best and if it’s a pro game in front of 19,000 people and live TV, you go out and do the best you can.” With his veteran experience, the former Canada Post employee is enjoying some of the mentor- ship he is providing young offi- cials. His advice to newcomers is to ask for hints and tips from veteran officials. Quite often when working with the National Lacrosse League, officials spend much of their time on the plane and in hotels talking about previ- ous game situations and how they were handled. It’s all part of the camaraderie, he says. As for making mistakes, they happen, he admits. The key is to own up to them. “If you’ve made a mistake, go over to the coach and tell him,” he suggests. “Sometimes that’s the best policy, not with all coaches at times, but I’ve done it in the past.” Fox will receive his recogni- tion on Sept. 25 during an annual awards dinner held in Mississau- ga. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- Bill Fox has been selected by Sports Officials Canada as an award winner recognizing an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of sports officials and the advancement of the sports officiating profession. LACROSSE Canada through to semis at world field championships MANCHESTER, ENGLAND -- Team Canada has rolled flawlessly through the round-robin portion of the 2010 FIL world lacrosse cham- pionships. The Canadians completed the preliminary portion of their sched- ule Tuesday with a 17-6 victory over the host club from England, and upped their record to 5-0. Whitby’s Zack Greer scored a pair of goals in the game, and told The Canadian Press afterwards that Canada didn’t play at its best and that going through the motions in a blowout game like that is tough. ““We played well at times,” said Greer, whose team held leads of 5- 3 after one quarter and 11-3 at the half. “They tried to slow the game down and sometimes it’s tough to keep your composure know- ing you’re up so many goals and they’re kind of killing the clock, but I think we stayed focused.” Oshawa’s Shawn Williams also had a goal in the drubbing, which may have turned out even more one-sided had it not been for a third quarter downpour of rain that slowed the game’s pace. Meanwhile, the 5-0 start earned Canada a spot in one of two semifi- nal games on Thursday. It appeared on Wednesday that Japan would serve as the opponent. The Robbie Tournament is known as the World’s Largest International Soccer Tour- nament where proceeds are donated to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The Ajax Soccer Club squad began play in the swel- tering heat with a solid 3-0 victory over Pickering Power Gold. Austin Werner started off the scoring for Impact, while Darren Commissiong and Gabe Mortimer notched the other markers. Devin Smith recorded the shutout. The stalwart defense of Dal- ton Clark, Claude Griffith and Adrian Martini held the shots on goal to a minimum. As the day grew hotter, so did Impact with another shutout in the second game. This time it was a convinc- ing 6-0 defeat of the Weston Wolves. Crisp passing and quick ball movement result- ed in several early goals and Impact did not look back. Commissiong was in the right place at the right time while striking five of the Impact goals. Cameron Palmer was the playmaker and assisted on four of these. Werner notched the remain- ing goal. On Day 2p, Ajax Impact started play exactly where they left off with anoth- er sound 6-0 defeat of the Oakville Soccer Club. Smith recorded his third shut- out of the tournament. Nick Sims, Jordan Smalling, Dal- ton Clark, Cameron Palm- er, Commissiong and Mor- timer all tallied in this game. Mortimer also stepped up as playmaker this time setting up three goals. This led Impact into the quarter-finals where they faced their CESL counter- parts, the Oshawa Kicks. Smalling started off the scor- ing early and added two more for the hat trick, while Com- missiong notched the final strike to put Impact into the semifinals with a resounding 4-1 victory. Another game, another playmaker. This time Jordan Hardie notched three quality assists. Late on Sunday saw Ajax Impact match up against Toronto High Park in the semifinals. Commissiong started off the scoring, while Hardie, Sims and Small- ing all added singles. The intense man to man marking left High Park little room to maneuver leading Impact to a 4-0 decision. Smith record- ed yet another clean slate. On to the finals to compete against a tough Whitby ‘A’ squad. The small field left lit- tle room to move around and it seemed to bottle up Impact who came out of the gates flat. Midway through the first half, Dalton Clark converted on a quality strike to put Ajax up 1-0 at half time. Commis- siong added another early in the second half and Impact hung on to complete the sweep and capture the Rob- bie International champion- ship title with a 2-1 triumph. Devin Smith was named final game MVP for Impact. Team Impact consists of Jordan Smalling, Jevon Alleyne-Nicholson, Gabe Mortimer, Nathaniel Sadler, Austin Coelho, Darren Com- missiong, Jordan Hardie, Cameron Palmer, Dalton Clark, Austin Werner, Claude Griffith, Nick Sims, Adrian Martini, and Devin Smith. Maarten Schyvenaars was on vacation. The head coach is Scott Hardie, assisted by Darren Commissiong. Rui Coelho is the trainer. Karen Werner the manager and Susan Hardie the treasurer. Ajax Impact is sponsored by Golf Leaf Construction, State Farm Insurance, Cobra Float Service Inc, Bell, MC Integrated, Island Mix Res- taurant & Lounge, Contact Distribution Ltd. and Thrifty Mechanic. Ajax won 2-1. FOOTBALL Bantams rally for 31-30 victory over North Halton MILTON -- The Ajax-Pickering Bantam Dolphins went into Mil- ton hungry for victory having lost their previous three games. Facing the North Halton Crim- son Tide, the Dolphins knew that they would be in for a tough game. Right away, Halton jumped out to an early 7–0 lead, but ‘Phins Andy Collison took the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for the first TD of the game with Michael Ciano making good on the convert attempt. The Tide successfully kicked a field goal to retake the lead and capitalized on a long punt to score a safety. The ‘Phins defence, led by Imad Mourad, Cameron Smith and Colin John- son, kept up the pressure on the Tide, forcing their quarterback to throw an errant pass, which was intercepted by defensive end Riley Daniels and returned for a touchdown. With Pickering leading 13–11, play came to a halt for 90 min- utes as a lightning storm swept through. When play resumed, the Dolphins made up for lost time when QB Jesse St. John ran in a keeper to increase Picker- ing’s lead at the half to 19-11. The ‘Phins came out flat in the second and Halton capital- ized, scoring three unanswered touchdowns for a 30–19 lead. But the Dolphins offence rallied around QB Rion Johnson who had a successful 35-yard TD pass completion to wide receiver Jackson Lyder, putting the ‘Phins back in the game. On their next possession, Lyder took a wide- receiver reverse and cut it back up the middle to score another TD. The linebacker core, led by Zach Kerr, Isaiah Schofield and Joel Mangunatmodjo, was relentless in pursuit of victory. Final score was 31–30 for the Dolphins which evened their season record at 4–4.
