Talkative suspect
nabbed in ‘Mr. Big’ sting
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
TORONTO -- Ontario’s top court has upheld
the murder conviction of a man who was
caught up in a “Mr. Big” sting by cops inves-
tigating the execution-style killing of an inno-
cent Ajax man.
In a ruling released Tuesday, justices with
the Ontario Court of Appeal rejected an argu-
ment that the judge who presided over Sean
Hall’s 2004 first-degree murder trial had com-
mitted errors that tipped the scales against
the accused man. Mr. Hall is serving a life sen-
tence for his role in the killing of Roy Jones,
who was gunned down outside his family’s
Twilley Lane home in February of 2001.
Last year, the Court of Appeal upheld the
conviction of co-accused Cosmo Jacobson,
the man who fired the fatal shots. Mr. Hall
helped plan the killing and drove Mr. Jacob-
son away from the crime scene.
Mr. Hall’s conviction in November of 2004
came after a sensational 10-month trial dur-
ing which jurors heard testimony from two
Durham police officers who portrayed them-
selves as high-ranking bikers in an attempt
to get close to Mr. Hall, a small-time crimi-
nal looking to make it big. He cozied up to
the cops in hopes they’d show him the way to
make a dishonest living, jurors heard.
The officers secretly taped hours of conver-
sations with Mr. Hall, during which he excit-
edly described the planning and commission
of the murder, and his role as the brains of the
operation. When he took the witness stand
in his own defence, Mr. Hall testified he had
been “bigging up” -- lying about his role in the
killing to impress the “bikers”.
Mr. Jones, 28, was ambushed outside his
home days before he was scheduled to testify
in court against Mr. Jacobson, who faced sev-
eral years in prison for his role in a home inva-
sion in Pickering in June of 2000. Mr. Jones,
who worked as a security guard, had seen
Mr. Jacobson using debit cards stolen during
the robbery in an automated teller machine
at a mall he patrolled. Mr. Jacobson and Mr.
Hall cooked up the scheme to murder Mr.
Jones, described as an exemplary citizen who
assisted police in the investigation of a violent
crime, to keep him from testifying.
Both men were sentenced to life in prison
with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Extension would end
at Simcoe Street
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Last week, the provincial gov-
ernment announced it had approved the
environmental assessment for the exten-
sion of Hwy. 407.
On Tuesday, it announced the exten-
sion would only go to Simcoe Street in
Oshawa, and not to Hwy. 35/115 in Clar-
ington. That’s upset Regional officials, who
weren’t told the work wasn’t the full length
they expected. Regional Chairman Roger
Anderson met with Energy and Infrastruc-
ture Minister Brad Duguid on Wednesday,
hoping to convince him of the need to build
the entire highway. “He understands our
concern on where he’s planning on stop-
ping the 407 and the impact it will have on
our roads,” Mr. Anderson said of the meet-
ing. “Move it as far as the (proposed) link
in Bowmanville for it to be palatable,” Mr.
Anderson said he told the minister.
The discussions he’s had with Mr. Duguid
and provincial officials “were very helpful.
I made the minister aware of a situation.”
Hwy. 407 currently ends at Brock Road in
Pickering and that’s caused problems for
the Region and City, because of the heavy
traffic coming off the highway.

Nuclear power energizes
Durham industry, economy
Canadian nuclear reactor technology
sold abroad could well rely on some of
the innovations discovered and perfect-
ed right here in Durham Region.
That’s the view from Dr. Neil Alexander
of the Organization of Candu Industries,
shared at an energy summit with Dur-
ham Region business leaders this week.
The planned refurbishment at Darling-
ton -- and recently concluded smaller
projects in Pickering -- will show the
world that so-called midlife refurbish-
ment of Candu reactors can be complet-
ed efficiently, on time and on budget.
Further establishing Canadian tech-
nology as a world leader in nuclear
power generation with the eventual
construction of new Darlington reactors
will also help revitalize the industry and
signal to international partners that the
best, safest and most efficient reactors
are conceived and designed in Canada.
The nuclear industry in Durham
Region continues to provide important
high-tech and high-paying jobs as well
as numerous spin-off employment in
industries and services that support the
industry here at home. Ontario Power
Generation Vice-president of Nuclear
Refurbishment Dietmar Reiner noted at
the meeting that a Darlington refurbish-
ment alone will create more than 3,000
jobs throughout the planning and con-
struction process, with potentially thou-
sands of related jobs created in support
industries.
An opportunity to showcase to the
world the latest technology in new-gen-
eration Candu reactors would provide
still more long-term jobs, contribute sig-
nificantly to the local economy and to
municipal coffers.
Durham Region and local municipali-
ties must take the lead and follow a dual
track to both promote the benefits of
the nuclear industry and actively recruit
businesses to set up shop in anticipa-
tion of the ambitious nuclear expansion
plan to serve southern Ontario’s energy
needs well into the future.
A long-term vision, securing well-pay-
ing, permanent employment opportu-
nities, projected economic benefits and
a focus on innovation should guide poli-
ticians at all levels to help pave the way.
They should also ensure that the refur-
bishments are approved and complet-
ed safely and expeditiously, while pro-
viding leadership in promoting Candu
technology.
As Denise Carpenter, president and
CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Associa-
tion noted at the meeting, there’s a vital
need for governments to support the
nuclear industry to achieve its goals. In
her words, the premise is simple: “We
need them to be our cheerleaders.”
-- Metroland Durham Region Media Group
Before we all started logging on to social
networking sites, there was just regular old
networking, the kind you did sipping cof-
fee at a board of trade breakfast or while
swinging golf clubs at a charitable event.
It all happened in the business world
where people put together a professional
image before starting to shake hands. And
let’s face it, image was everything. No one
wanted to discuss a mortgage with a bank-
er in a tube top or buy a car from a guy
holding a beer bong. But at the same time,
no one cared what their real estate agent
got up to at the club on a Saturday night.
But in the world of social media, our net-
works are a strange tangle of personal and
professional contacts and it can be impos-
sible to tell where one begins and the other
ends.
For folks who make a living doing sales,
sites such as Facebook and Twitter can be
a great source for finding customers. Dur-
ham real estate agents who tweet new list-
ings grab the attention of potential home
buyers. Sales tweets from the Ajax Pita Pit
have drawn me in for lunch on more than
one occasion.
But there’s a flip side as well, because
once you “friend” your boss, co-workers,
clients and business associates, there are
politics involved in un-friending them or
restricting their view of your profile. If you
do it, they’ll know. Parties can be a land
mine when some co-workers get an invite
and others don’t and then the pictures are
plastered online for all to see on Monday.
It becomes even dicier in professions
such as teaching, where it’s not appropri-
ate for students to see Twitpics of their
teacher letting loose on vacation. Journal-
ists often feel like they can’t join politi-
cal groups or discussions on sites such as
Facebook because they create a sense of
bias, whereas we’d never hesitate to shoot
the breeze with friends in a coffee shop.
Off the record, most employers cop to
searching for information about potential
hires on social media sites. If you have a
pristine LinkedIn Page, but your MySpace
friends belong in the gutter, you might be
in trouble.
The problem with social media and pre-
senting a professional image is that friends
and family will often post photos and infor-
mation we don’t want our work contacts to
see. By the time you get them to remove it,
the damage has already been done.
At Metroland Durham, most reporters
have locked down their personal Facebook
pages and created professional ones, but
I’m not entirely convinced that’s going to
work.
My personal life is already melding into it
with my friends “friending” both accounts.
I can’t very well confirm requests from
strangers, but ignore friends.
At the end of the day, the surest way to
maintain our work images is to never do
anything in our off-hours that we wouldn’t
want our business world to see. But that’s
a tall order and one more reminder that
when we reap the benefits of social media
professionally, there’s a big price tag per-
sonally.

Some councillors
question why matter
didn’t go to tender
KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- After some debate, the
City’s planning and development commit-
tee has decided who will conduct terres-
trial and fish habitat restorations in Duffin
Heights.
The committee Monday approved the
Toronto and Region Conservation Author-
ity to conduct the restoration works iden-
tified in the environmental servicing plan
for Duffin Heights to compensate for the
loss of the natural features due to develop-
ment. Pickering will pay the TRCA about
$35,000 for fish habitat and $7,200 for ter-
restrial habitat since the City owns a por-
tion of the lands.
Duffin Heights is envisioned as a sustain-
able, residential and commercial neigh-
bourhood, that will stand along Brock Road
bounded by the St. Lawrence and Hudson
rail line to the north, the hydro corridor to
the south, the Ajax-Pickering townline to
the east and the Ganatsekiagon Creek to
the west.
After learning staff chose the TRCA for
the job, rather than putting the matter out
to tender, Ward 2 City Councillor Doug
Dickerson said other conservation groups
should have been asked to apply.
“Why not ask somebody else just to hold
and keep the TRCA honest?” he said.
Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell
agreed, and asked that the TRCA be taken
out of the equation so the matter could go
to tender, but it didn’t pass.
Planning and development director Neil
Carroll said the TRCA was chosen because
“they have a proven track record.”
He added other City departments sup-
ported staff’s choosing the TRCA.
So did Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bon-
nie Littley.
“TRCA has been involved in Duffin
Heights since the beginning and they
know it like the back of their hands,” she
said.
The report was passed and will go back
to council for final approval June 21.

(NC)—As the weather gets nicer, there’s
nothing better than expanding your living
space outdoors. And luckily, it’s easy and
affordable to create a comfortable and chic
outdoor room. Use these quick tips to trans-
form your space.
Planning Perfection
Simply putting furniture on a deck or patio
doesn’t create an inviting outdoor living area
– instead, be sure to look at the bigger pic-
ture. As you would an interior room, incor-
porate a theme and colour scheme into your
new design.
Arrange the furniture so that it is inviting
for you and your guests to socialize. And, no
need to buy new furniture to make your out-
door space look new. Instead, apply a fresh
coat of stain or spray paint to your existing
wood or metal furniture for a stylish and up-
dated look.
Manufacturers, such as Krylon offer spray
products, such as its exterior semi-transpar-
ent spray stain and Outdoor Spaces spray
paint to make it quick and easy to makeover
your patio. Both are available in the latest co-
lours, and best of all, they dry quickly, and
provide superior protection against the out-
door elements.
Once your furniture is fi nished, add acces-
sories. Layer colour and textures to give the
space a pulled-together appearance; incor-
porate colourful placemats and an interest-
ing centerpiece on your table to set it apart.
Place coordinating water-resistant pillows on
seating to bring the comfort of indoor living
outside.
And don’t forget about under your feet;
by adding an outdoor area rug or mat, you’ll
have a cohesive and stylish space.
Plants Please
One of the greatest parts of an outdoor liv-
ing area is being able to include natural ele-
ments. Just like the indoors, nothing cheers
up a room like strategically placed fresh
fl owers. To keep your space functional and

clutter-free, look for pots and planters that
work with the overall layout of your space.
If you have a balcony or long railing, try us-
ing fl ower boxes that can affi x to them. Or,
if you have the space for oversized pots and
unique stands, simply place a few fl owers
in key spots to create a space that will make
your neighbours green with envy.
In addition, to fl owers, fresh herbs can be
a fragrant, beautiful and useful addition to
your patio – especially if you enjoy cooking.
They are extremely easy to grow and care
for, so add a few decorative herb pot to spice
up the look of your patio – and your summer
dishes.
Extraordinary Extras
Next, get cozy in your outdoor space by
adding an outdoor fi replace to your patio.
Or, if you love to lounge, install a hammock
to enjoy those lazy summer days. Finally,
don’t forget about lighting. Stringing lights
or lighting candles can make your patio seem
magical at night and help create a great at-
mosphere when entertaining.
When updating your outdoor living space,
remember to decorate like you would the
indoors for a pulled-together, chic outdoor
space. And soon, by using a few of these
ideas, you’ll create a picture-perfect patio in
no time.

Toronto’s waterfront to Picker-
ing’s First Nation’s Trail, which
leads to Monarch Trail and The
Peak Trail, making up the 12.2
kilometres of waterfront path in
Pickering.
“The connection between the
City of Pickering and Toronto
being fully accessible is a result
of partnerships,” said Mayor
Dave Ryan, who called Picker-
ing’s waterfront a “shimmering
jewel.”
The new addition features a
brand new staircase that leads
up to Dyson Road from the trail
and a new pedestrian bridge
perched high above Rouge
Beach. The boardwalk-style set-
ting provides an expansive view
of Lake Ontario.
Pickering’s director of opera-
tions and emergency servic-
es, Everett Buntsma, has been
involved in the project from the
beginning and explained the trail
used to be made up of asphalt
and railway ties for stairs.
“It wasn’t inviting at all,” said
Mr. Buntsma. “We needed to
make it safe, and we needed to
make it accessible.”
The Gateway was funded by
Pickering and Waterfront Toron-
to, which has a mandate of revi-
talizing the waterfront from
Mississauga to just beyond the
Rouge River.
The Toronto and Region Con-
servation Authority, which has
jurisdiction of nearly 60 kilome-
tres of Lake Ontario waterfront,
executed the project.
“Today we can see what the
spirit of true collaboration
can achieve,” said Gerri Lynn
O’Connor, chairwoman of the
TRCA.
Larry Field, who recently
retired after a long career with
the TRCA as manager of gov-
ernment liaisons, said the gate-
way will greatly complement the
area.
“As people come to the mouth
of the Rouge, you have great fea-
tures on both sides,” he said.
Mr. Field said the rehabilita-
tion of the waterfront at Port
Union Road, which is current-
ly on the agenda, will also play
a strong role in enhancing the
trail.
Ward 1 City Councillor Jenni-
fer O’Connell, the chairwom-
an of the Pickering Waterfront
Committee, said the rehabili-
tation has been a focus of hers
since she was first elected and
thanked everyone for their hard
work.
“I hope you love it as much as I
do,” she said.
She also spoke of the signifi-
cant history of the First Nations
people in the area, giving the
First Nations Trail its name.

PICKERING -- Kingston’s Willy Lake, left, and Pickering World Class Boxing’s Victor Plaza, right, battled during a three-round amateur
match in the Youth Open category at World Class Boxing on Sunday. Plaza went on to win in a split decision.
PRENTICE CUP
St. Mary comes up short in semi
Pickering school
will play for bronze
in senior boys’ baseball
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- There is some consolation for
the St. Mary senior boys’ baseball team after
losing in the Prentice Cup semifinals.
It took the best team to beat them.
The team that beat them, Vincent Massey
from Windsor, went on to win the gold medal,
beating another Windsor school, St. Anne, 4-
3 on Wednesday night.
“This is the farthest our school has ever
been and I stressed we still have another
game to play and to not hang their heads,”
said field manager Brian Chen of the talk he
gave his players after Tuesday’s 3-1 semifinal
loss to Vincent Massey at Connorvale Park in
Etobicoke.
“We actually played a really good game,
just the outcome wasn’t what they wanted.
They were really disappointed, but they did
play a good game so it’s not like we beat our-
selves.”
Tuesday’s semifinal featured the top seed
from the west, Vincent Massey, against the
second seed from the East in St. Mary. It also
featured a pitchers’ duel, with a couple of top
hurlers from the junior national team taking
the mound. Joel Pierce from Vincent Massey,
who was drafted earlier this week by the Mil-
waukee Brewers in the seventh round, 219th
overall, struck out 10 St. Mary batters and
scattered four hits over seven innings. St.
Mary countered with Brian Smith, who was
selected in the 40th round, 1,210 overall by
the Chicago Cubs. Smith pitched six innings,
striking out nine and giving up seven hits.
“We left the bases loaded a couple times, so
we were getting our hits, we just didn’t string
them together,” said Chen.
In the other semifinal, the top seed in the
East, Sinclair of Whitby, was mercied 11-
1 by the No. 2-seeded St. Anne. Tuesday’s
results set up an all-Windsor final for gold on
Wednesday and an all-Durham bronze game
between St. Mary and Sinclair. Unfortunate-
ly, rain postponed the games in Etobicoke.
However, the two Windsor schools returned
home and played the final late Wednesday
night. St. Mary and Sinclair are expected to
play the bronze medal game early next week
in Oshawa.
BASEBALL
Pickering’s Smith
and Ajax’s Diedrick
taken in MLB draft
PICKERING -- Though he probably
waited much longer than he would have
liked, Pickering’s Brian Smith is officially
a Major League Baseball prospect.
Smith, a Canadian national junior
team member and pitcher on the St.
Mary’s Monarchs, was drafted in the
40th round, 1,210th overall Wednesday
by the Chicago Cubs.
The six-foot-one left-hander will
wrap up his high school season next
week with St. Mary in the OFSAA
bronze medal game and, according to
the Canadian Baseball Network web-
site, has a commitment to attend Volun-
teer State Community College.
Meanwhile, Ajax resident and
Pickering High School athlete Phil Died-
rick was chosen by the Toronto Blue
Jays in the 45th round, 1,356th overall.
Diedrick is a six-foot, 205-pound
left fielder who has a commitment with
Bossier Parish Community College.
SOCCER
Notre Dame juniors
win LOSSA soccer
AJAX -- The Notre Dame junior girls’
soccer team celebrated a LOSSA
championship this season.
The Lady Cougars blanked Ajax 2-
0 in overtime of the Quad-A champion-
ship game. Colleen Milne was responsi-
ble for the damage, scoring both goals,
one on a penalty kick, while Karen Espi-
nola looked after things defensively,
posting a shutout.
In the semifinals, Notre Dame got
past Uxbridge 2-1 on penalty kicks.
The coaches of this year’s squad
were Dawn Gonzalez and Manmeet
Husson.
BASKETBALL
Summer basketball

AJAX -- There is still time to regis-
ter for the summer basketball camp at

Durham team
now off to world
championship
in Sweden
BURLINGTON -- Swimmers
from the Durham Synchro-
nized Swimming Club ruled
the Centennial Pool in Bur-
lington at the 2010 Masters
Provincial Championships.
Occupying several spots
on the bleachers in view-
ing area, spectators anx-
iously prepared to cheer on
the swimmers, who ranged
in age from 18 to 64, as they
took to the pool in solo,
duets and team events.
No stranger to competi-
tion, DSSC’s masters team,
coached by Holley Lund-
mark, elegantly assembled
themselves on deck waiting
for their pulsating music to
begin.
Clothed in unique routine
suits accented with jag-
ged linear designs in green,
gold and splashes of red,
the athletes looked striking
against the stark contrast of
the aquatic facility. Heart-
beats introduced the team’s
mesmerizing music then
the crowd erupted.
Incorporating a secret
agent on the run theme
in their choreography the
team sliced through an
electric routine with several
melody changes. The final
scores when they revealed
that the DSSC masters team
had taken first place in the
free team, 18-34-year-old
division and tied for first
place with Toronto in the
tech team, 18-34-year-old
division.
For the young DSSC
swimmers cheering from
the stands, this was an
incredible opportunity to
witness their coaches incor-
porate the very attributes
they themselves are striving
to obtain: professionalism,
power, grace, synchronicity
and confidence.
If this event is to be any
indication of what is to be
expected from the masters
team as they compete in
the XIII FINA World Mas-
ters Championships 2010
in Sweden July 27 to Aug.
7, many more ribbons and
trophies are on the way.
More importantly, they’ve
already won the respect
from the young athletes
they are shaping.

FOOTBALL
Junior Dolphins blank Georgetown
DURHAM -- The Ajax
Pickering Dolphins Junior
OVFL made it two wins in
a row after defeating the
Georgetown Crimson Tide
38-0.
Playing in Georgetown, the
Dolphins, with quarterback
Keith Cyrus at the helm,
amassed a total of 272 offen-
sive yards with touchdowns
from numerous players.
Leading the rush with three
touchdowns was Demetri-
us McFarquhar, followed by
one apiece for Keith Cyrus
and defensive tackle Joshua
Brown. Brown’s touchdown
came after a forced fumble
by Darien Arscott, which
Brown scooped up and ran
in. Leading the ‘Phins with
85 rushing yards was Antho-
ny (AJ) Thomas.
Pickering’s defensive core
held Georgetown to a min-
imal amount of yardage.
The opposing quarterback
was blindsided by numer-
ous sacks from Pickering’s
Kordal Darling, Brown and
Graham McClenaghan. Ray-
mond McMullen had a pic-
ture-perfect interception and
Joshua Small came through
with five tackles.

Durham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door
Wayne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door business a
new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile
Showroom which just may be the only one in
Canada.
“The day is gone when you carried
some brochures and a sample window to
a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I
obtained a retired North
York Mobile Library truck
and installed interior
walls along with all of my
window samples.”
When you call
Durham Windows and
Doors for a free estimate,
Wayne will show up at
your door with his Mobile
Showroom which you’ll
enter by way of a sliding
patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls, are
the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl
windows which you’re free to operate and
you’ll discover the many special features
including how they can be cleaned without
going outside.
“After being in this business for 26 years, I
can honestly say these are the finest windows
on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple
sealed to reduce
air leakage and
come with heavy
duty hardware.”
All Vinyl
Window Designs
windows come
with Low E Glass
which filters out
the ultraviolet rays
keeping your home cooler in the summer
and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes
and furniture.
All of the windows come with a lifetime
warranty on the frame, hardware and
