The average person would have no idea the lively and intelligent girl, who loves soccer, bas- ketball, swimming and art, suffers from Crohn’s disease. She was diagnosed at the age of eight with the chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive system that is treatable, but not curable. “I wish it was curable,” said her mother Trish Cam- eron. “That’s what we’re working on.” For months, Nicole will be fine, then, all of a sudden, a flare-up will bombard her and take her away from her favourite activities until it passes. “There’s no rhyme or reason to it,” said Ms. Cameron. During flare-ups, Nicole will often lose weight and become very lethargic. “When I’m really not feeling well, I really don’t want to do anything,” she said. “That’s the worst See PICKERING page 7 NEWS 4 Pickering airport? Council pushes Region for local resident on airport authority board BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Durham’s member on the Greater Toronto Airports Authority’s board of directors should be a Pickering resident, council has agreed. At the May 17 meeting, Pickering council sent a request to Durham Region council to amend the current process for the appoint- ment to the GTAA board in order to ensure that person is specifically from Pickering. Durham council appoints a new member of the Durham public to the board at the beginning of every council term. The federal government owns the 18,000- plus acres of land in north Pickering that have been designated for a possible air- port. Therefore, the issue is of greater importance to Pickering and its residents than the rest of Durham, the motion said. The motion pointed out the minutes of all GTAA board meetings are not made public, which leads to lack of accountability and accessibility of information for Pickering and Durham residents. “I think you have to show some trans- parency to the people you represent,” said Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson. He also pointed out Pickering is turn- ing 200 years old in 2011 and the Region of Durham was only formed in 1974. But whether the Region agrees to Pickering’s request is “another battle for another day,” he said. Coun. Johnson introduced the motion along with Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell. Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles said the City should ideally have some input on an appointment. But he was also skeptical of the Region’s support. “I don’t think it’s going to happen anyway but I’ll support it and hopefully we’ll have some luck at the Region,” he said. PICKERING TOWN CENTRE • UPPER LEVEL • SEARS WING COMFORT AND STYLE We Have Your Size Travel traffic down during recession, says airport operator KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The analysis has been com- pleted and now it’s up to Transport Canada. Toby Lennox, the vice-president, cor- porate affairs and communication for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, said the group has finished the analysis on whether an airport in north Pickering is needed. A confidentiality agreement meant he couldn’t talk about the possibility of an air- port in Pickering, Mr. Lennox told Durham Regional Council’s planning committee on Tuesday. “A decision on an airport, where, when and if it’s constructed is up to Transport Canada and not the GTAA,” Mr. Lennox stated. The federal government will continue to own the (Pickering) airport lands. Mr. Lennox also outlined the benefits Dur- ham receives from Pearson International Airport. “The airport enables Durham businesses to succeed and grow,” he said. Half of all air cargo goes through Pearson each day, he stated. “We think there’s untapped potential here. We’ll work with the Region.” About 25 per cent of Durham residents are visible minorities and were born outside the area, Mr. Lennox pointed out. That number of immigrants “starts driv- ing traffic and it’s driving traffic around the globe,” he said. Last year, passenger traffic dropped 6.1 per cent, with most of that domestic or ‘trans- border’ (U.S.) traffic. International travel was only off 1.6 per cent. Travellers to Asia grew by more than 20 per cent in March alone, he noted. “That’s not families going back to see families. That’s business,” Mr. Lennox said. “We’re seeing significant growth. We want to change how we do business to accom- modate that growth.” The GTAA is “expecting to see a rebound” in travellers this year, he noted, but only by about half of one per cent. “Pearson is becoming an international airport and not a domestic airport. We’re trying to promote Pearson as a gateway,” he said. Mr. Lennox said the authority has lowered landing fees for three straight years. He said they are still high, but added, “There’s no correlation between landing fees and ticket prices. Prices are affected by the market.” Landing fees only make up about four per cent of the ticket cost, he stated. “That doesn’t mean we don’t have an obli- gation to drive down costs.” Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said, “I’m glad to see the lower cost. It will have a long-term impact on prices.” However, the GTAA needs to lower its landing fees even more, Mr. Anderson stat- ed. “You’ll lose a ton (of airport traffic) when Pickering is built, and I’ll market the hell out of it, and you’ll lose a ton to the island air- port,” Mr. Anderson said. The Metroland Durham Region Media Group has launched a number of Twitter feeds and Face- book pages where you can visit, get updates on stories we’re working on, check out unique photographs and join our journalists in discus- sions on a variety of topics. “We look at Facebook and Twit- ter as the online water coolers. A place where people can have a discussion, share ideas, debate the issues and keep tabs on what’s going on in their community,” says Joanne Burghardt, editor-in-chief of MDRMG. Ken Pearson, director of new/ social media for 2havz, calls it “media for the people, by the peo- ple. “We now create content and online interactions outside of the established media outlets, market- ers and corporations. We can now all have our 15 minutes of fame,” he says. Aside from personal use, social media is fast becoming an integral part of any communications and marketing strategy. According to Mr. Pearson, many businesses, big and small, governments, not-for- profits, corporations, educational institutions and media outlets are now using social media to enhance and grow their online presence. “For journalists, that means you now have millions of new sourc- es and leads every day. Unedited ‘news’ is delivered online in a never- ending stream of tweets, posts, blogs, links, pictures and updates. This stream of media can be an incredible source of raw informa- tion for the journalist who can then turn this information into edited and credible news,” says Mr. Pear- son. “Social media isn’t going away. It is an evolution in communica- tion. Looking forward, the social media will be constantly evolving to meet the desires of all of us who still want our 15 minutes of fame. There would be no Justin Bieber without YouTube.” On page 6 of today’s paper you will also find the first of a weekly column by Ajax reporter Reka Sze- kely. Better Ballots Durham is promoting a host of potential municipal election reforms aimed at markedly improving voter turnout in the region’s municipalities in 2010. Given the disappointingly low turnout percentage -- it hovers around the 25 per cent mark in Durham’s southern, urban communities - - the initiative is vitally important to serve and reinforce the democratic process. Several election reform options proposed by Better Ballots Durham, some of which would be relatively simple to implement, were among a poll conducted over the last week by durhamregion.com. In sifting through the hundreds of responses, pref- erence emerged for weekend voting and online voting, a clear indication that vot- ers in Durham Region would be inclined to cast their votes based on convenience and accessibility. Poll respondents also weighed in on other options, but few of them held any appeal. A small percentage was in favour of municipal parties, lowering the voting age and extending the vote to permanent resi- dents who don’t yet carry citizenship. A slightly greater number of was in favour of terms limits, at-large voting (instead of the ward system), and ranked balloting. Respondents also addressed campaign and election financing; several would like to see a prohibition on paid volunteers and campaign self-financing, while nearly as many were in favour of pre-election contri- bution disclosure. Taken in the whole, a representative group of Durham Region voters are seeking expanded convenience to encourage better turnout and more restrictive financing reg- ulations to even the playing field for all can- didates, whether new or incumbent. There is more work to be done by Better Ballots Durham over the coming weeks and months; this poll can help shape the direc- tion in which the debate goes. If more active participation in the local democratic process is the goal, these rela- tively simple steps can help provide the impetus for voters to more readily exercise their democratic franchise. The technology exists to ensure credible and secure online and telephone voting for ratepayers. Established systems are in place for ballot voting in all of Durham Region’s communities; allowing weekend votes could be as easy as choosing a date on the calendar. As well, campaign financing and disclo- sure regulations can also be changed to reflect the will of voters and help provide clarity before votes are cast. When the final results are compiled by Better Ballots Durham and a similar group initiative in Toronto and submitted for Ontario government review, we urge the Province to give the voice of voters every consideration on these reforms. Perhaps that’s why they call the space between advertisements in a paper the news hole: once published our work disap- peared into a deep dark hole, never again to see the light of day. That was then, this is now and the way we communicate is drastically different than it was even five years ago. With community newspapers in every municipality in Durham, we’re always looking for new ways to connect with our readers and that’s why we’re expanding our presence on social media sites like Facebook (facebook.com), twitter (twitter. com) and Youtube (youtube.com). On Facebook, check out our fan page at facebook.com/newsdurham. We’ll be posting to the page looking for your opinion on stories we’ve done and hot issues in the community. We’ll also use the Facebook page to ask for feedback on issues we’ve yet write about. For example, Oshawa reporter Jillian Fol- lert is working on a story about walkable communities and wants to know where people can walk to from their front doors and what would improve the walkability in their community. The page gives us the opportunity to find out what our readers really think about our content and it gives our readers the abili- ty to hold us accountable for the quality of our work. Our friends will see photos that didn’t make the paper, comments from report- ers on some of the material that didn’t make the cut and editor-in-chief Joanne Burghardt explaining how we made the tough calls. For local jock talk, look for Sports Dur- ham on Facebook and check out Kristen’s Kritters for everything pet related. In the coming months, we’ll be publish- ing our videos both on durhamregion.com and Youtube, making it easier than ever to share our community’s stories with friends and family. News junkies can follow us on twitter @newsdurham where we’ll have links to breaking stories. With breaking news, we can send out a blast on twitter quicker than we can update our website. As well, various reporters (including me), editors and @sportsnewsdurham can be found on twitter. The 15th annual event is put on by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Cana- da. She and her friends and family are part of Team Nicole. People all across Canada annu- ally strap on their skates, hop on their bikes, lace up their walking shoes or in-line skates, skip rope or do whatever they please that involves their heels or wheels to raise money to find a cure for the inflammatory bowel dis- ease. The event also includes face-painting, balloon-making, and will offer refreshments and food. She’s taking part “to raise awareness and to raise money to find the cure.” She hopes at least 100 people will attend this year’s event. If a cure is found “I think it would change (my life) drastically,” she said. The Grade 6 William Dunbar Public School student loves school. Along with everything else, she takes part in her school’s concert choir and loves art. And it’s tough for Nicole when her flare- ups get her down. She joked her friends don’t believe her when she says she doesn’t enjoy taking time off of school when the flare-ups occur. “I’d actually rather be at school.” Her mother said if the News Advertiser had done the interview in January when she was really ill, and 15 pounds lighter, the paper would feature a very different person. “I feel so much better now,” Nicole said. Her teachers are very understanding of her absences, said her mother. “They’re super, very supportive,” she said. And so are the kids at school. “She told me when she first got it,” said her friend Vanessa Stamos, whose family also plans to attend the event. And she doesn’t let the disease get in the way of their friendship. “I think that it’s pretty cool with all the stuff that she’s doing with it,” she said. Nicole doesn’t know too many people with Crohn’s disease, but hopes to meet more at the event. She also hopes more people will become aware of the disease that affects one in every 160 Canadians. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on June 13. The warm-up starts at 10 a.m., the kick-off will be at 10:15 and it will go until 12:30 p.m. Nicole can be sponsored on the event’s web- site by searching her name, or those interested can register to sign up themselves. The central library at One the Esplanade opened its doors to the public on May 22, 1990 in order to accommodate Picker- ing’s rapidly growing popula- tion. It’s changed from a library that loaned out films on 16-mm reels to the one it is today, featuring free Internet access, computer training, downloadable books, DVDs, iPods and video games, on top of old favourites and the newest bestsellers and a wide variety of programs for clients from babies to seniors. Library CEO Cathy Grant said many days, the library is burst- ing at the seams. “The Pickering Central Library has become a cornerstone of the community, both through its excellent collections and services as well as through its many partnerships with com- munity agencies,” she said. The public is invited to join staff for cake and snacks in the central library foyer on Friday, May 21 at 3 p.m. CITY SERVICES Pickering library turns 20 The Pickering Central Library has become a cornerstone of the community both through its excellent collections and services as well as through its many partnerships with community agencies. Lawn arden Advertising FeatureG&Home, Pistritto’s – Proudly serving Ajax and Pickering for 40 Years! Spring is fi nally here! Now is the perfect time to rejuvenate your lawn, spruce up your garden with nutrient-rich soil, and make your dreams of expanding your living space into the outdoors a reality. Arnts Topsoil, The Landscape Supplier has been the source for landscaping supplies in the Durham Region and GTA for over 40 years. Using a high quality Topdressing soil is the key to a green, healthy lawn you can enjoy through the summer and fall. Topdressing and seeding your lawn will keep your turf thick which helps it resist insects and weeds. Arnts Topsoil’s Topdressing is a fi ne blend of Sandy Loam, Peat loam for moisture reten- tion, Composted Manure for nutrient value, and Composted Pine Mulch Fines to lower the pH to an optimum growing range. Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch. Spread a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of Arnts’ premium Topdressing soil on your exist- ing lawn. Spread grass seed (several choices are available depending on the application site), rake lightly, and follow with a deep and infrequent wa- tering schedule. Early morning is the best time to water the lawn. Adding fresh Triple Mix soil to your gardens each spring gives your plants a good boost to start the growing season. But not all Triple Mixes are created equal. Arnts Topsoil understands the importance of having a good soil foundation for a garden. Arnts’ Triple Mix Garden Soil is com- posed of just the right blend of quality ingredients to form the basis for a fl ourishing garden. In addition to a wide variety of soils and ag- gregates, Arnts Topsoil also provides the best selection of natural fl agstone and rockery, deco- rative gravels, interlocking paving stones and garden walls, slabs, curbs, steps, pond supplies, and much more. This extensive product selection, combined with an abundance of visual displays, inspires creative ideas for distinctive landscape designs. Helpful staff, brochures and videos, Do-It-Yourself Seminars, and services such as delivery, equipment rental, and free estimates on products are available to help you through every step of your project. Arnts will be hosting a free Do-It-Yourself OAKS Concrete Products seminar demonstrating the installation of interlocking pavers and garden walls. To date, the Lottery has made 11 new millionaires, and gave away many new cars, exotic trips, shopping sprees, but the people of Durham had a much bigger win in mind when they bought their $100 tickets (or now 3 for $200)-the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre. It won in May 2007 when the doors opened and cancer patients were offered treatment “closer to home”. With more than $20 million donated, the Cash for Cancer Lottery represents the largest single contribution to our Cancer Centre. Its unprecedented success can be attributed to several sources, not the least of which is local businesses that have provided incredible prizes and marketing support for the Lottery. Jim Szeman, CEO of The Oshawa Hospital Foundation and creator of the Lottery states, “We are blessed with a charitable community fi lled with “philanthropic business minds. Calendar Your flowers are abundant, your shrubs well pruned, your flower beds spectacular and your rockery inspires jealousy... Why not have even more pleasure, once the evening comes, by casting light on all this beauty? Magical evenings guaranteed! The first step in lighting your garden consists of installing lights of around 1.5 watts per square metre, along the paths and in the flowerbeds. The light should be strong enough for people to see the way without being dazzled. You can also light up your flowers by installing garden lamps and install spotlights at the base of some trees for a dramatic effect. If you have garden ponds you are sure to find a huge choice of underwater lighting devices in specialized stores. They must be supplied with a low tension current through a safe electrical transformer. The final touch is reserved for the lighting on the outside staircase. In order not to create areas of shadow and dazzling light, be sure to install spotlights towards the outside of the staircase. As far as trends in 2010 are concerned, eco- friendly options have gained ground in exterior lighting. You can now purchase solar panels to capture the sun’s energy directly and transmit it for nocturnal lighting. For new homeowners, this free, clean and renewable energy is a truly sustainable investment. The Ashburn Art Circle is for artists from anywhere in Dur- ham, and painters, photogra- phers, graphic designers and others are all invited to join -- but only if each is willing to make community outreach a high pri- ority as a member of the group. “If they believe in that, work- ing with the community, they’re welcome to come,” says founder Martha Weber, of Ashburn. The Circle is holding its first group exhibition on May 29 and 30 from noon to 5 p.m. both days at the Ashburn Community Cen- tre, 780 Myrtle Rd. W. (just west of Ashburn Road), Ashburn. In addition to being an interior designer and watercolour artist, Weber is also a volunteer at Dur- ham Hospice. A longtime member of the com- munity, Weber returned to water- colour painting in 1997 and took courses at Durham College. She had been playing around with the idea for a unique arts group when she and her husband one day noticed a man taking pho- tographs of their property. Curi- ous, they approached Andris Piebalgs and asked him what he was doing. When Weber learned he was a photographer, she fig- ured he was “the perfect person to approach” with her idea and it took off from there. A call for those interested to come to a meeting resulted in 26 people showing up, from several Durham municipalities, includ- ing Oshawa, Whitby, Uxbridge, Scugog and Ajax. Among the 18 members are John DiLeonardo, a Brook- lin artist who works in a variety of media and has exhibited for more than 30 years, and Jean Tel- ford-Rahme, a Port Perry water- colour artist. Piebalgs, also of Ashburn, notes that many of the Circle’s most experienced members are also involved in established groups such as the Pickering-based Pin- eRidge Arts Council. Born in Latvia, Piebalgs was a Second World War refugee who came to Canada in the early ‘70s. He started a Brooklin-based business and, after selling the company, returned to photogra- phy. Piebalgs says the Circle is a good fit for him as, in the small community, “everybody knows everybody. “There’s a sense of connection and that’s what my work is all about,” he says. He wholeheartedly agrees with Weber’s vision for the group, but both Piebalgs and Weber note how that will take shape is yet to be determined. “It could have a lot to do with raising self-esteem,” he said. “It’s wide open and we’ll be working on this during the summer.” The group plans on having one or two exhibitions a year and the first is a way of introducing them- selves to the community, Weber says. To learn more about the Ashburn Art Circle, contact Pie- balgs at apiebalgs@insuccession. com or 905-655-3555. Bring your vehicle into Diamond Shine to remove the salt and stains from winter and leave with it impeccably clean and shining! With over 15 years in the detailing business, Diamond Shine has earned a reputation for their high quality work and value pricing. Diamond Shine offers a package that fits every budget, from a wash starting at just $19.95 to complete detailing. A Diamond Shine car wash is nothing like the car washes you can drive through. The vehicle is hand washed, using high quality soap, and hand dried with a chamois to achieve a brilliant shine. The difference can be seen in the details! It’s called detailing for a reason. At Diamond Shine, their showroom package leaves no small space untouched. To achieve a showroom look, they use toothbrushes and Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They only use the best products, to ensure superior results. Interiors are vacuumed, shampooed and detailed. Don’t let dog hairs and spilled drinks spoil the interior of your vehicle! Bring it in to Diamond Shine to be cleaned and have your upholstery protected to keep it looking great all summer long. It’s also a great time to have your vehicle waxed and polished to protect it from the summer elements. Things are heating up, both outside and at Diamond Shine. Many people are taking advantage of the nice weather and bringing their vehicles in. To avoid disappointment, make sure you call to book your appointment today! “We want to thank everyone for putting their trust in us for the past 15 years, including both our loyal customers and the many dealers in the area,” says Joanne. Diamond Shine is a family owned and operated business that has been serving the Durham Region since 1994. Diamond Shine is located at 221 Westney Rd.
