Chris Alexander served as ambassador from 2003 to 2005 and then served as UN Deputy Special Repre- sentative in Afghani- stan until May 2009. He announced this week he is seeking the Conservative nomina- tion in the federal Ajax- Pickering riding, cur- rently held by Liberal Mark Holland. As a federal public ser- vant for many years, Mr. Alexander said he’s spent years working to improve Canada’s position in the world and he wanted to continue representing Cana- dians by making the move to public office. After leaving Afghanistan, he and his wife had a choice to make on where to raise their baby daughter. “We wanted a community that would be good for our young family, a family starting out ... that would reflect our experi- ence of Canada and the world and we found that in Ajax-Pickering,” he said, adding he con- siders the area to be modern community with a blend of long-time residents and communi- ties of new Canadians, some of whom come from parts of the world where he’s served. Born in Toronto, Mr. Alexander earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University and a Masters degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Balliol College at Oxford University in England. A career diplomat, he spent several years in Russia and other parts of the world. Mr. Alexander says he plans to work on get- ting to know the residents in the riding. Kim Dowds, vice president and commu- nications chair for the Ajax-Pickering Con- servative Association, said the nomination process closes on Sept. 24 at 5 p.m.. “Anyone who would like to be a nominated candidate for the Conservative Party in Ajax-Pickering needs to contact the party as soon as possi- ble,” she said. “Should there be no other nom- inees who come forward, Chris Alexander, who has already submitted his paperwork, would be acclaimed as candidate.” READ the Electon Watch 2009 blog @ newsdurhamregion.com POLITICS Former ambassador seeks Ajax-Pickering nomination CHRIS ALEXANDER ne w s du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 5 , 2 0 0 9 4 AP 3MALL"IZ3MALL"IZ (OME"IZ5NITED(OME"IZ5NITED 3MALL"IZ4RADE3HOW3MALL"IZ4RADE3HOW 3PONSOREDBY 3EPTEMBER AMTOPM !JAX#OMMUNITY#ENTRE (-32OOM 3OUTH3IDEENTRANCE &2%%!$-)33)/. $OOR0RIZES +AIETEUR3PLASH,UNCH h3ONGBIRDv!COUSTICDUO 0LEASEJOINUSANDSUPPORT OURLOCALSMALLBUSINESSES WWWSMALLBIZHOMEBIZUNITEDCOM WWWMOMANDKIDSTUFFCOM WWWNATURALBEAUTYONTHEGOCOM A Plus Vacuum & A Plus Vacuum & Home SystemsHome Systems Sales Service Repairs & Installation Service to all makes & models of Central and Portable Vacuums $549 Premier 550 AW (Electric pkg) • 8000 Sq. Or a goat, some alpacas, even a couple of cows. On Oct. 4, local farms will be showing people around and giving them a sneak peek at how the food they eat gets on their plates. Eleven farms from Uxbridge to Tyrone are partici- pating. The facilities produce a wide range of products depending on the stop: there’s maple syrup, honey, wine, pork, beef, dairy, yarn, potatoes and flour. At Greendale Farm in Brooklin, owners Ron and Maureen Jackson will be showing off their sheep farm. There will be shearing, guided tours and demonstra- tions of dogs rounding up sheep. The tour is something the Jacksons have done for the past three years. The couple has been married for 26 years and worked the farm together since then. It’s been in Mr. Jackson’s family since his grandfather bought the land in 1926. The Jacksons will also be cooking up some lamb to share with guests. Eating fresh food is a completely dif- ferent experience than eating what you buy frozen at the store, Ms. Jackson said. “It’s a totally different taste,” she said. “We’ve gotten used to the fresh taste and you don’t realize how fresh it really is until you try some- thing from the store.” Hopefully, Gate’s Open will ramp up interest in buy- ing food locally, Durham’s tourism manager Kerri King said. “The importance of eating local becomes part of your lifestyle,” said Ms. King, who grows some of her own produce and keeps chickens for fresh eggs. “Hope- fully this will encourage people to seek out local food sources and get to know the farmers.” It also helps to show people what life on a farm is real- ly like. It’s not a 9-to-5 job and at Green- dale, the busiest time of year is Decem- ber, a holiday season for most, Ms. Jack- son said. The tour also dispels the “storybook” idea some have when they think of farming, said Rebecca Mustard, from Durham Farm Fresh Marketing Associ- ation. “It’s like stepping into a whole new world of modern agriculture ... people don’t know how technologically advanced farms are.” Tickets for the self-guided farm tour are $10 for adults. Children under 16 are free. In addition to the tour on Oct. 4, there will be a Harvest Market at Palmer Park in Port Perry from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3. There will also be a Harvest Dinner in the evening at Knox’s Pumpkin Farm. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per guest. Contact Kings Court Catering for details and tickets at 905- 623-4277. Throughout the weekend Durham res- taurants and bed and breakfasts will offer menus featuring local foods. A list of those participating can be found on the Gate’s Open website. A choice of Veterans of HMS Ajax, HMS Achilles and HMS Exeter to visit town BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Ajax is gearing up to welcome the veterans who are uniquely tied to the histo- ry of the Town with its Tribute to All Veterans next week. “It’s the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate and the return visit of the veterans of the ships that were involved in that -- the HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles - - but we’ve taken the opportunity to honour all veterans,” said Ajax Councillor Pat Brown. The Battle of the River Plate began on Dec. 13, 1939 off the coast of Argentina and Uru- guay and involved the Allied ships under the command of Commodore Henry Harwood, taking on the Admiral Graf Spee command- ed by Captain Hans Langsdorff. The German captain ultimately scuttled the Admiral Graf Spee. It was the first major naval battle of the Sec- ond World War and, in honour of the victo- ry, a brand new Ontario town, built around a munitions factory in what used to be rural Pickering, was named after the HMS Ajax. “We’re actually having five veterans that were at the Plate, of course, they were boy seamen at the time,” said Coun. Brown, add- ing that back then boys as young as 14 could serve in the navy. Veterans who served on the three ships subsequent to the battle will also be attend- ing, as will the families of veterans who have passed away. The Town’s Tribute to All Veterans will kick off on Saturday Sept. 26 with street dedica- tions and end on Oct. 4 with a musical trib- ute to veterans and the dedication of the Ajax Legacy Obelisk at the foot of Harwood Avenue at the entrance to the Veterans’ Point Gardens. Etched with a poppy, it’s intend- ed to honour all veterans who have served their country. Guests will also include active members of the Canadian military and Lieu- tenant-Governor General David Onley. Cherry Sevigny, the mayor’s administra- tive coordinator, has been doing a great deal of the organizing for the anniversary celebra- tions. Recently, a blurb in the newspaper invited residents to ask her about the origin of their street name as most of the streets in Town are named after veterans who served on one of the three ships. She received a number of queries. “It’s only when we do these kinds of things that it raises the awareness of our unique his- tory,” said Ms. Sevigny. To share that history, the veterans will be visiting a number of schools. The veterans or the relatives of veterans who have passed away will also be partici- pating in street dedications on Sept. 26 and 27. Among the streets to be formally dedi- cated are Cullcastle Street, Dring Street, Iles Street, Talbotshire Street, Wicks Drive, Turn- erbury Avenue, Jonesridge Drive, Searell Avenue and Napiermews Drive. Of the 700 streets in Ajax, only about 65 have been officially dedicated by the veter- ans or the families of the veterans in whose honour they were named. And as people age, it’s more important than ever to honour them. “This is probably the last opportunity they’re going to have to visit Ajax personally and to see their streets,” said Ms. Sevigny. On Oct. 3, the grandson of Commodore Harwood will officially dedicate Harwood Avenue. Many of the families visiting from Brit- ain will be billeted by local families in Ajax, including Coun. Brown. She said that forms a strong relationship and many who came for the 60th anniversary celebrations still keep in touch with their host family. “You develop such a strong relationships (with the people) from overseas, it’s really like home to them,” she said. The recommendation by Durham Region’s Works committee to achieve zero waste by 2038 demonstrates clearly that the regional councillors on this com- mittee have not grasped the first thing about an incinerator. Incinerators must burn at nearly full capacity 24 hours a day, day in, day out throughout their entire operational lives. On the other hand, working toward zero waste is a gradual approach, elimi- nating the easy stuff first like plastic bags and plastics that are recyclable but not currently collected in Durham’s blue box program. Then you look at more ambitious and innovative programs. As we would learn to substitute reus- able and recyclable materials for the waste we currently generate, the tonnage going to disposal would gradually dimin- ish. The very fact that you can’t “ramp down” an incinerator would effectively block that progressive approach. Or if we did manage to implement it, we would have to turn our incinerator into a commercial operation. We would have to offer discounts to any municipality happy to export their waste problem to our “made in Durham” solu- tion. Louis Bertrand Clarington Make your voice heard on the incinerator now To the editor: Concerning the Durham incinerator, I have recently received a flyer in the mail and also picked one up in my doctor’s office stating that the incinerator is “not a done deal” but then, I also noticed in the classified ads that a company is hiring energy-from-waste engi- neers. Is this just a coincidence? I hope so, but think not. I realize that it can create some employment but I would hope our politicians will think of the “cause and effect” before the decision is made to have this built. The fall- out from this will effect more people than any one of us can imagine. Not only the pol- lution that it will cause but also the quarter- billion taxpayer dollars it takes to have it built and then, an estimated $14 million to run it every year. And we all know the government does not estimate well and consistently goes over budget. Please people, make your voice heard now. Contact the Ontario Ministry of the Environ- ment. The EA project officer is Gavin Battari- no, gavin.battarino@ontario.ca, or call/write your MPP. If you have any doubt about this incinerator your voice needs to be heard, and hopefully its not too late already. Debra Brown Oshawa EDUCATION Help make schools safe To the editor: Re: Why no consideration for those children with no allergies. Alison Campbell letter, Sept. 16. I have a child with many allergies, not the least of which is to peanuts. The “nut free” polices, while an inconvenience for some, are a godsend for families like my own. Pea- nut butter is a smoking gun to children like mine. However unintentional, even the tini- est amount can send these children into ana- phylactic shock and in the worst case scenar- io lead to coma and death. Segregating these children is not the answer. The best policy here is avoidance and the education of staff, students and parents alike. We are not ask- ing for your sympathies, but rather your help in making our schools a safe place for every child. Tammy Kellar Courtice Let’s get GO-ing on train extension into Clarington The ongoing need to unclog overused Durham commuter routes could get a lot of help if a promised extension of GO Transit sees trains coming through new routes in Oshawa and into west Bowmanville by 2013. Regional councillors were told last week by Gerry McNeil, executive direc- tor of Metrolinx, that part of the provin- cial government MoveOntario 2020 pro- gram is to extend GO Train service into Bowmanville. The extension comes with a $500-mil- lion to $600-million price tag, but it’s a timely initiative that dovetails perfectly with increased Durham growth and the need to reduce congestion, smog and greenhouse gas emissions caused by commuting vehicle traffic. The Province has made the improve- ment of public transit part of its mandate and Premier Dalton McGuinty, who has made it his mission to go down in history as the “green” premier, can put another notch on his legislative belt by ensuring construction starts as planned, by 2011. An intriguing part of the initiative would see the current GO train station in Oshawa on Bloor Street, which is a con- gestion nightmare during peak times, moved to an alternate site in Oshawa. Such an idea would have to be extremely well-planned -- the City is interested in putting a new GO train station off Thorn- ton Road with GO using the CPR line -- but improving traffic routes to and from the site would be a prerequisite. Fewer cars heading to and from Toron- to helps citizens in Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington by leav- ing the highway a little less jammed at peak times. Combine a GO train exten- sion into Bowmanville at the site south of Canadian Tire, west of Martin Road between Prince William Drive and Aspen Springs Boulevard, with plans to widen Hwy. 401 from Brock Road in Pickering to Brock Street in Whitby and there will be an even smoother commute. The Prov- ince also needs to continue its plans to widen Hwy. 7 from Pickering to Oshawa, and to extend Hwy. 407 from Pickering to Hwy. 115/35 in Clarington. All are long- term initiatives that will work together to improve traffic flow. As GO Transit develops better and more frequent train service to keep up with Durham’s growing needs, it’s essen- tial the lines of communication remain open. GO needs to listen to local stakehold- ers and respond so the most effective use of taxpayers’ money leads to the best ser- vice possible. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / letter writers are obliged to back up statements with verifiable facts / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com ne w s du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 5 , 2 0 0 9 6 P ne w s du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 5 , 2 0 0 9 7 AP ART SHOW & OPEN HOUSE Sunday,September 27th 2:00pm - 4:00pm Join us for our Open House featuring various artwork by members of the Pine Ridge Arts Council and the Ajax Creative Arts Group. Of 1,300 cadets on the parade square at Borden, Kyle was chosen the best dressed by the commanding officer of the training centre. Kyle also achieved an Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada Medal of Merit presented to cadets on senior courses to promote excellence and awareness. He also won the Lieutenant- Colonol RP Russell Trophy, presented to the best overall cadet on the army cadet leader instruc- tors courses. “He’s worked very hard,” said his mother, Janis Ryan. “We have a lot of real good cadets who work hard and they’re our future.” Kyle joined cadets at the earliest age one can join, 12. “It was a step toward the military, I guess, because I want to join as an officer,” he said. His grandfather was a soldier and Kyle has always had an interest in joining the military. And since he’s joined, he’s been most impressed with the life lessons he’s learned. Leadership skills, presentation techniques, public speaking, geography lessons are things he’s grateful to have learned thus far. “They give you life skills that you will use in every aspect of your life,” he said. Kyle also enjoys the sports nights cadets hosts and has made a lot of friends. He feels the fitness testing he’s gone through will also help him excel in the future. Ms. Ryan says since cadets is free, it’s a great opportunity for parents, including those with a low income, to get their kids involved and active. “Everything’s issued,” Kyle said. Kyle plans to attend the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ont. after graduating high school to focus on engineering. Aside from cadets, Kyle likes to slalom ski and downhill ski. He’s a member of the Pickering Community Band and is also involved in a peace group at Pickering High that focuses on character building, leadership and anti-bullying. For copying magazines, books, newspapers and other copyrighted materials, the Dur- ham District School Board will have to pay a retroactive tariff increase to Access Copy- right, following a decision by the Copyright Board of Canada. Access Copyright allows immediate legal access to copyrighted mate- rial for a fee. The increase is being appealed by Ontario school boards and ministries of education throughout Canada, except Quebec. “This will have a negative impact on our year end approaching,” said Ed Hodgins, superintendent of business and treasurer, to the Durham District School Board at its Sept. 21 meeting. No budgetary provisions were set aside in anticipation of the decision, he said. The ruling, which was made at the end of June, impacts every school board in Canada outside of Quebec. For Durham District School Board, it equals more than $733,000 in retroactive costs, which include about $59,000 in inter- est. It also adds $165,000 more to fees than anticipated in the 2009-2010 budget year. The issue dates back to 2004 when Access Copyright proposed a tariff of $12 per full- time equivalent student, which the school boards’ association has been fighting for six years. A rate of $2.50 per student was estab- lished in the meantime. In June, the Copyright Board of Canada set the rate at $5.16 per student, with a reduced rate of $4.64 for the 2005 to 2008 retroactive period. “This is a significant increase in relation to what schools have been paying under the agreement,” said Claude Majeau, secretary general to the Copyright Board, in a press release. “However, the total royalties repre- sent only 0.05 per cent of the total costs in ele- mentary and secondary education. The edu- cation system as a whole is perfectly capable of dealing with this royalty increase.” In all provinces except Ontario, it’s the edu- cation ministries that pay the tariff and not the school boards, said Roanie Levy, Access Copyright’s general counsel and director of policy and external affairs. Access Copyright made the move to increase fees following a study which revealed the majority of items copied are textbooks pages, she said. The Canadian- made textbooks are tailored to each prov- ince’s curriculum, so they don’t have anoth- er market to sell to, Ms. Levy added. Copying them without compensation would drive them out of existence, she added. The fee is not something schools can opt out of, unless they demonstrate they never copy any protected work, Ms. Levy said. PUBLIC NOTICE PICKERING -- Starting Monday afternoon, Dunbarton High School will be the host to the first-ever farmers’ market on school property. Between Sept. 28 and Nov. 9, on Mondays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. the school’s parking lot will become a market. Dunbarton stu- dents will help run the market as part of their course work. “Schools are paid for already, the parking lots are sitting empty, instead of driving 30 to 40 miles to buy something fresh, people can walk there,” said James Blair, a food sci- ence teacher at the high school. Mr. Blair said there will be a number of farmers selling meat, vegetables, fruit, spic- es and herbs, with about eight to 12 farm- ers participating. Dunbarton High School is located at 655 Sheppard Ave. in Pickering. COMMUNITY Dunbarton students host farmers’ market DURHAM -- Durham students have a chance to win $25,000. The TD Friends of the Environment presents the third annual $100,000 Go Green Challenge, in which graduate and undergraduate students can win $25,000 towards bringing their green concepts to life or helping with their school expenses. The competition requires students to team up in preparing a 4,000-word, 20-page essay on ideas to make Cana- da more environmentally sustainable. Entry deadline is Jan. 15, 2010. The Ontario Wood Carvers Asso- ciation is holding its 30th annu- al competition and show, Magic in Wood, Sept. 26 and 27 at the Pickering Recreation Complex East Salon from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The association normally meets twice a month in Toronto, but chose to hold its annual show in Pickering. “The Pickering Recreation Com- plex is a beautiful place,” said assis- tant project manager Robert Wood- ill. Woodill began wood carving when his father died two years ago. His father had practised the hobby for a years, so when he died, Wood- ill decided to use his dad’s old tools and take on the pastime himself, and he hasn’t turned back. “It’s a very relaxing hobby,” he said. “It’s very rewarding too, when I finish a carving.” Although Woodill’s art, usually whimsical houses, faces and wood spirits (men with long beards), won’t be for sale, as all of his piec- es have been claimed by his family, work by other artists will be. And even if people are interested in learning about carving, buying materials, seeing demonstrations or simply browsing, there will be a lot to do. “We try to accommodate all the wood arts,” Woodill said. Pieces will include carvings of humans, busts, animals, insects, fish, wildlife, water fowl, ducks and landscapes. Wood carving is a great hobby to pick up, even if one doesn’t ini- tially consider themselves artistic, Woodill said. “I myself can’t draw to save my life,” he said. Sixteen different wood carving clubs will attend the show, which will include competitions, demon- strations, seminars, exhibitions, a silent auction, a raffle, draws, priz- es, tools, books, supplies, children’s activities, refreshments, hot or cold lunches and snacks. There’s also free parking and the event is wheel- chair accessible. It costs $5 per adult, $3 per senior and kids 12 and under are admit- ted free. To enter the competition, the first entry is $10, and each entry after that is $5. The deadline to enter is on Saturday morning. Reg- istration begins at 10 a.m. FESTIVAL Tamil youths entertain in Ajax Free admission to Sept. 26 festival AJAX -- The 8th Annual Durham Tamil Youth Festival features entertainment courtesy of the talented young people of Durham’s Tamil community. The Durham West Art Cen- tre’s Durham West Studio Tour is Oct. 3 and 4, with 22 artists participating at press time. The list includes sculptors Edward Falkenberg, Gerd Untermann and Francis Muscat and paint- ers Allan O’Marra and Robert Hinves. Photography, mixed media and pottery can also be seen on the tour. Lishman is a metal sculp- tor who creates dazzling forms, human and otherwise, out of his Ajax studio. But he’s more than that, including a painter, a host for art events and productions on his home stage and a creator of steel wall hangings, 3D ani- mations and tables. He’s accustomed to having company over and is looking forward to the tour. “Since I have a stage here, I have a lot of different charac- ters dropping in all of the time,” Lishman says. Visitors will be able to see his sculptures, a mix of both older and newer works. And they can check out his interactive Rubens’ Tube, which he describes as “an EQ with fire.” Six feet long, it’s a tube with holes in the top. “You can yell into it and see your own sound waves,” he says. And while he was doing just that when we caught up with him, the actor also landed one of the main parts in the play and says he feels right at home. “I’m right back in the fold again, like I never left,” he says. Stowe moved to Ajax from Wind- sor in 1986, started taking acting lessons and classes and getting involved in theatre, including roles at Herongate. He married, started a family and moved back to Windsor and is now going “back and forth” after the invitation from Herongate co-owner Steve Graham. Given his happy memories of working at Her- ongate, he jumped at the idea and, when an actor dropped out of the show, landed the role of Matt. “My character is a radio broad- caster and he’s divorced with two kids and very comfortable in his own space,” Stowe says. Matt isn’t looking for a relation- ship, but his single friend, Andy, is. When Andy goes out on a date, he brings his friend Matt along as “a buffer.” Andy’s date does the same and her friend and Matt end up hit- ting it off. Stowe is familiar with Foster’s work as he performed in Sinners at Herongate and The Motor Trade in Windsor. A fan of Foster’s realistic dialogue, Stowe says he rehearses by blocking out his lines and read- ing the other character’s lines to try and anticipate how his character would respond. He often finds that the line in a Foster play is what he would have said. “It has a natural rhythm to it,” Stowe says. He extends a special invitation to his buddies at General Motors and at the Pickering Nuclear Generat- ing Station to come out and see the play. Looking begins its run at Her- ongate on Sept. 25 and continues until Nov. 7. Woodlawn Farm has been a part of his family’s history since it was built in the 1840s. Locat- ed at 709 Westney Rd., in 1982 it was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Earlier this year, Lishman’s commissioned sculpture was mounted on Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry. His task was “to create an artistic chronicle in the form of a metal sculpture,” in the words of the Town Hall board of direc- tors, showing the many uses the building has seen in its history, including a fire hall, women’s undergarment factory, a movie house and its current incarna- tion as a performing arts centre.
