At the beginning of the second half of the nineteenth century, British North
America consisted of four provinces —Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia
and Prince Edward Island. There was also the Hudson's Bay Company territory,
the far west and the north-west. In 1864 the governments of the three maritime
provinces met in Charlottetown to discuss a maritime union. Representatives
arrived at the meeting from Canada and suggested a union of all the British North
American colonies. Later in the same year a conference was held at Quebec City
at which further plans for this larger union were made.
The result of the discussions was the British North America Act, which came
into effect on July 1, 1867 and united Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.
Other provinces joined later: Manitoba in 1870; British Columbia, 1871;,Prince
Edward Island, 1873; Saskatchewan and Alberta, 1905; and Newfoundland*, 1949- .
In every part of Canada there will be events, celebrations, projects and services
to mark the centennial year. United Church people in every province will take
part in these events and will give thanks for the unity Canada has had as a nation,., ..
and will work diligently to assure its- continuance for the future.
The spirit of union which drew the Congregational, Methodist, and Presby-
terian Churches together into The United Church of Canada and which is still
urging the Church to a wider union, could- well be an important cohesive force
that will help to cement the varied parts of this sprawling land more firmly into
a nation.
Lord while for all mankind we pray,
Of every clime and coast,
O hear us for our native land,
The land we love the most.
Lord of the nations, thus to Thee
Our country we commend;
Be thou her refuge and her trust,
Her everlasting Friend. AMEN.
