OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Collared earthstar — How's that for a cool name? For a fist-sized puffball with an outer skin that splits open as it grows, curling back and forming pointed "petals" encircling a central globe that spits puffs of peppery spores when you squeeze it with your fingers. Or when the wind blows by. Every fall I fall in love with fungi. The multitudi- nous shapes, colours, sizes and textures make every walk in the woods a trea- sure hunt, whether I re- member any of their names or if I've ever seen them before. Earlier this month I had the good for- tune of tagging along after mushroom expert Richard Aaron of Toronto, who's compiling a list of fungi for Phill Holder's amazing bio- diversity research in the Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve in Whitby (check out www.mattholderfund- .com, specifically The A- quila newsletter January 2020). Richard is a font of knowledge and stories, and the fine weather, migrating thrushes and accipiters, plus good company made for an enjoyable outing — despite a noticeable lack of mushrooms. Compared to last year, a lush and rainy one, this dry summer has so far produced far fewer fruiting bodies from the scores of mycorrhizal fila- ments that interlace the soils of the reserve. Eighty per cent of the biomass in any forest floor is fungi, do- ing their vital jobs of breaking down and recy- cling wood, and providing water and minerals in their symbiotic, life-giving relationship with trees. And they're smart enough to wait for ideal moisture conditions to reproduce and spread spores. Even in current condi- tions Richard and Phill found some 35 interesting specimens, especially on logs and stumps, which hold moisture much lon- ger than leaf litter and soil. Purple-toothed polypore; Hypholoma capnoides; smooth parasol. Panellus sertinus, or late fall oys- ter... names floating in the air were a dizzying mix of English, Greek and Latin. Including the collared earthstar, Richard identi- fied ten or so new for the list. Plus deadly galerina, a pretty yellowish gilled mushroom growing in clusters on a fallen limb, one of the most poisonous in Ontario. A good reason never to eat any fungus not sold in a grocery store, as far as I'm concerned! All foraging is prohibit- ed on the Thickson's Woods Land Trust proper- ty, but in the interest of sci- ence Richard carefully col- lected small samples of fungi requiring a micro- scope to identify. And re- placed any on sticks he picked up gill-side-down so the spores would fall to earth. Just walking through a woods can crush mushroom fruiting bodies and compact the under- ground filaments, another good reason to always stay on the path. FALL IN LOVE WITH FUNGI THIS FALL TICKETING DRIVERS DURING PANDEMIC HURTS SMALL BUSINESSES To the editor: I was in downtown Bow- manville on Sept. 8 in the afternoon and to my aston- ishment I saw several cars had been tagged with park- ing tickets. In these tough economic times, when small busi- nesses are struggling to stay open, that is the sup- port they receive from their municipality? A de- terrent to their customers? A reason for people to shop at chain stores in shopping malls where they can park for free? Shame on you, Munici- pality of Clarington, for not having the backs of your small business owners. You forego parking me- ters at Christmas time to encourage shoppers -- what about now, the scari- est, most unstable econom- ic time that most of us have ever experienced? Support small, local business Clarington! HEATHER MCFARLAND CLARINGTON HEAVY TRAFFIC A NEGATIVE IN BROOKLIN To the editor: Re: Battle over Brooklin pits Whitby against provin- cial ministry. What a great idea, keep- ing the core of this charm- ing, historic village for pe- destrians. I don't live in Brooklin, but throughout this covid summer have been joining a few fellow fiddlers and other musical seniors for once-a-week socially dis- tanced jam sessions in the big gazebo at Grass Park there. Locals out for a walk or bike ride often linger and listen to a tune or two, and to our special delight, toddlers from a nearby day- care sometimes stop by in their triple-pack strollers. The only downside is the traffic. Big trucks make a lot of noise, so much that their rumbling up Hwy. 12 regularly drowns out ev- erything we're playing or saying, then leaves us breathing in a cloud of ex- haust. Mayor Don Mitchell has it right. Keeping heavy traffic from charging through the heart of town would greatly improve the quality of life for many folks in beautiful Brooklin. Munderich wanted to save the dam and lodge, saying in July she discov- ered there were some bea- vers living in the area. "Half way through Au- gust, I started visiting them daily. I would go in the evenings and watch them for a couple of hours every single night. Since then, I've developed a little bit of a connection to them. They definitely know me. They recognize my scent," she said. There are two adults and two babies, or kits. The dam was in a creek immediately south of Da- vid Farr Park, which is on Glenanna Road between Liverpool and Dixie roads in central Pickering. "I just thought it was the most interesting thing that we had, that wild, living right in the middle of an ur- ban area," Munderich said. She said one time both adults came out of the wa- ter and walked over and sniffed her shoe. "I sit on a tree that spans the creek, and I sit there each night and they swim right underneath me. One time, they come and sit on the bank right beside me," she stated. "I feel a little bit of an attachment to them." Brian Duffield, the act- ing director, community services for the city, said, "It's always unfortunate when we have to intervene when a new beaver activity is reported in our munici- pal water infrastructure. Beaver activities can really impair the function of our water courses and storm water facilities." The beavers can create a risk to both public and pri- vate property, especially in large storm events, as they block the water flow, Duf- field noted. "We go by early inter- vention of removal of dams when they are under con- struction. That's our best practice. If a dam or lodge does get fully established in a waterway, there will be flooding on adjacent land when they can't adequately discharge storm water. The best thing is to go in there and remove it," he said. Sometimes the beavers will rebuild and then the city has to go back in to re- move the dam, Duffield said. "Eventually, they will get the message and move on. They won't stay in an area where their dam gets knocked down," he said. As the pandemic rages on and not a lot of other ac- tivities that can be done, going to watch the beavers has been an outlet for peo- ple living in the area, she said. "They can see things in action right in front of them," she said. "I understand we need to preserve infrastructure, and I completely under- stand that people might be concerned; that creek is a storm sewer channel," she noted. "There are ways around that. The water has not overflowed the banks and the water hasn't creat- ed extreme depth either." Duffield said a culvert near where the dam was built had been blocked and that could cause flooding. The city won't trap the beavers. "Trappings have to be done by a licensed trapper and we'll only use that as a last resort," Duffield said. The Ministry of Natural Resources guideline is to remove a dam before trap- ping, he noted. "We can't risk flooding in a residential area, in the heart of the city, because the beavers have blocked land off. We have a respon- sibility to everybody," he said. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: A Pickering resi- dent sent us an email about a beaver family that had built a dam on a creek in the heart of Pickering. She was, however, upset that the city removed the dam recently. So, we spoke to her about the situation and to the city, to understand why the dam was removed. NEWS Continued from page 1 ‘THE WATER HAS NOT OVERFLOWED… HASN’T CREATED EXTREME DEPTH EITHER’ Susan Munderich is happy that the beavers re-built their dam after city officials removed it. Alicia Barnes sprang to action when her little brother crashed through a glass table, cutting his leg so badly he ended up re- quiring 25 stitches. The Grade 12 J. Clarke Richardson CI student, who is now enrolled in on- line learning due to CO- VID-19, has received a citi- zen recognition certificate from Region of Durham Paramedic Services for her calm demeanour and quick response when she helped her brother through a stressful and potentially dangerous time. Alicia's brothers were horsing around, and must have been jumping from couch to couch when she heard a loud crack. "Apparently he missed his jump and just went right in the coffee table," their mother Chequera Beckford said of her boy, Jordan Johnson. She was taken aback by the scene. "There was so much blood I didn't know what to do," she said. Her 17-year-old daugh- ter did. Alicia had been in her room when it hap- pened. She first felt panicked when she saw Jordan's se- vere laceration but told her other brother to grab a shirt so she could apply pressure to the wound to try and slow the bleeding. Next, she told her mom to call 911 and her brother to wait outside for the ambu- lance. "I was very scared on the inside, but I tried my best to come off as calm and collected as I possibly could be to make sure that my brother was not panick- ing and to let him know that he would be okay by talking to him normally and asking him questions," she said. Advanced care para- medic Kashta Dolphin at- tended the call. "When we showed up, he was already bandaged up," he said. "She used a t-shirt to bandage his leg."Her quick thinking, resource- fulness and calm demean- or stood out to him."I was kind of struck with how re- laxed she was," Dolphin said. "It kind of shows a lot of character at that age be- ing able to stay that calm." Barnes recently re- ceived her CPR and First Aid certificate after taking part in two-day training af- ter enrolling in the special- ist high skills major sports course offered through her school. "Looking back at that night it kinda felt like I wasn't myself," she said. "Even though I had re- ceived training and I learned that you had to ap- ply pressure until 911 ar- rives, I didn't think I would be able to perform so smoothly and under so much control. I just knew I had to help my brother." She's interested in working with the United Nations as a peacekeeper when she's older. Others have suggested she become a paramedic. "She has the tempera- ment for it," Dolphin said. Alicia's mom is proud of her daughter."She's a good child," she said. "She's an honour-roll student." She speaks highly of Jordan, too. "He was tough," she said. "He was up, sitting, watching the doctor stitch- ing him up." Jordan's wound is heal- ing nicely. AJAX TEEN SPRINGS TO ACTION WHEN LITTLE BROTHER NEEDS 25 STITCHES Durham paramedic Kashta Dolphin, left, presented an award to Ajax teenager Alicia Barnes after she calmly helped her brother, Jordan Johnson, front, when he fell through a glass table and injured himself. Online rates available 24/7 MARSHA JONES DOOLEY A Pickering high school graduate whose yearbook tribute to his late grand- mother was replaced with a racist message has received an outpouring of support from the community. Joshua Telemaque, 18, recently graduated from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and chose to make his yearbook message one of thanks to his grandmoth- er, Magdalene Massicot, who died in 2013 at the age of 72 from pancreatic cancer. After picking up his yearbook on Oct. 10, he dis- covered that his original words — "RIP Grandma. Thank you for guiding me through my four years of high school" — were re- placed with "Rip Harambe Dooga booga," a reference to a gorilla that was shot at a zoo in Cincinnati. St. Mary officials quick- ly recalled all the 2019-20 yearbooks and the Durham Catholic District School Board launched an investi- gation in collaboration with Durham Regional Police. On Oct. 16, police an- nounced nine more stu- dents had come forward to report that their yearbook profiles had been tampered with. According to police, one instance reflected "racist overtones" while another student was criticized for his grades and a female stu- dent was criticized for body image. No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing. The commu- nity has rallied around Te- lemaque. On Oct. 14 there was a drive-by parade to mark his 18th birthday with police, firefighters and many com- munity members partici- pating. That same day, the Toronto Argonauts football team and the Pinball Cle- mons Foundations an- nounced a four-year schol- arship for Telemaque to any Canadian university or col- lege. "If you do the work to get into school, we'll look after the tuition for up to four years at any Canadian post- secondary school. We are sincerely sorry for what you had to go through," said Argos spokesperson Mike Hogan. DCDSB officials say the board has apologized to Te- lemaque and his family and will be looking at every step of the yearbook process and making recommendations to ensure this can't happen again. "This is such a terrible event. I don't know that I can even express on behalf of the school community, the board, how saddened we are by it," said DCDSB Su- perintendent Susie Lee- Fernandes in an interview. This wasn't the first time that racist words have ap- peared in a St. Mary year- book. Alumni point to the 2012-13 yearbook, which was printed with the phrase "kill all n-----" written back- wards as part of a graduat- ing student's message. The DCDSB said in a statement that addressing racism is a "key priority" of its Equity Action Plan. Anyone with informa- tion about the St. Mary yearbook incident is asked to call Durham Regional Po- lice at 905-579-1520, ext. 2529 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-8477. COMMUNITY RALLIES AROUND PICKERING STUDENT AT THE CENTRE OF RACIST YEARBOOK INCIDENT Joshua Telemaque waved back at supporters driving by his Pickering home on his birthday. The St.Mary Catholic School graduate's message to his Grandmother was replaced by racist content that was included with the student's graduation photo in the yearbook. A loving person, so gentle and kind; what a wonderful memory you left behind. Long days, long nights, you bore your pain. To wait for a cure, but all in vain. Till God Himself knew what was best. He took you home and gave you rest. Just a thought of sweet remembrance just a memory sad and true, just the love and sweet devotion of one who thinks of you. What would I give to clasp your hand, your happy face to see, to hear your voice and see your smile, that meant so much to me. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn’s rain. Heavy are our hearts today, memory brings you back once more, to the time when you were with us, to the happy days of yore. A wonderful person, friend and aide, one who was better God never made; a wonderful worker, so loyal and true, one in a million – that person was you. In my heart your memory lingers, always tender, fond and true; there’s not a day, dear friend, I do not think of you. Loving and kind in all your ways, upright and just to the end of your days; sincere and true, in your heart and mind, beautiful memories, you left behind. Pleasant in manner, patient in pain, our loss is your eternal gain. And have you gone, forever gone and left us here to weep. Till we are called to follow you, and in the grave to sleep.A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE SPECIAL OCCASIONS dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , O c t o b e r 2 2 , 2 0 2 0 | 22 Corneil's Online Car & Trailer Auction Sale Selling - 2001 70th Anniversary 30' Air Stream Trailer - 2017 RC 614 enclosed trailer (excellent shape) - Gibson Tractor Parts - 1976 Mercedes 450SL Convertible with hard top - 1931 Pontiac 6 Sedan with extra engine and parts- Estate Car 1931 Chevrolet Berlin Sedan - Bidding opens Wednesday Oct 21 at 9am, Soft Close Starts Wednesday Oct 28 at 7pm. www.corneilauctions.hibid.com ONLINE ONLY ESTATE AUCTION ANTIQUES - COLLECTABLES - Beginning Friday, Oct. 23 - 9am - Closing Tuesday, Oct. 27 - 7pm at MCLEAN AUCTIONS - 2140 Little Britain Rd., Lindsay - antique & modern furniture, new carpets, collectable glass & china, Pressed glass, crystal, Royal Doulton figurines, Cranberry, Sterling Silver, pair of Moorcroft candlestick lamps, vintage paintings, clocks, bottles, advertising, collectable tin signs, Beer trays & ashtrays, autographed books, Playboy magazines, toys, excellent all brass CPR & CNR Model trains, American Flyer, Lionel, comics, records, sports cards & memorabilia, jewelry, vintage duck decoys, early Can silver coins & pennies, silver dollars, some uncirculated, proof sets, paper money, WW1 Fire Fighter gear, military items, vintage painted fishing lures, over 1500 interesting items, Note: closing Tuesday, Oct. 27 - 7pm MCLEAN AUCTIONS 705- 324-2783 photos/catalogue/ terms/preview/pickup times at www.mcleanauctions.com 2020 “Honour a loved one who served our country.”country.”country Order your print announcement online to receive a 50% discount.
