C O M / C O R O N A V I R U S With colder temperatures moving in and patios becoming less inviting, local restaurants have seen another drop in busi- ness. "I think people were very com- fortable sitting outside," said Dan Ferracuti, owner of Drums N Flats in Ajax. " Unfortunately, as the weather has been turning, though, we've seen the complete opposite." He said the restaurant's large patio this summer was "a lifesav- er." In June, Ontario entered Stage 2 of opening back up for business following the COVID-19 lockdown, allowing restaurants to welcome guests back to dine on patios. In July, Ontario entered Stage 3, allowing guests to eat inside, with limitations. However, a lot of people still preferred to eat out- doors. "I just think in general people feel better sitting outside still," said Andrew Jackson, Moxie's Bar and Grill director of opera- tions. "All our booths, we have glass between every single one so that we can seat all of them and so peo- ple feel better sitting inside," Jackson said. Both Moxie's and Drums N Flats are getting positive feed- back from those who dine inside. "I think the consensus is that people that have dined with us are very happy with what we're doing," said Jackson. "We hear it in a lot of feedback online and in person." As the number of COVID-19 cases has increased again since early September, on Friday, Oct. 9 the Province announced that To- ronto, Peel and Ottawa would go back to a modified version of Stage 2. Jackson hopes that with the number of cases being relatively low in Durham, compared to oth- er Ontario regions, the region will not face a similar future. "I think in Durham or any area if they have to close again, you'll see a lot of restaurants go under," Jackson said. "I think there's a lot of restaurants that have gone through these last five or six months and they can't afford it anymore." Both restaurants got by in the early COVID-19 months through offering takeout and delivery, but it wasn't easy. Ferracuti said he saw an im- mediate drop in business as soon as "not factually based" stories were spun about bars and restau- rants being a high rate of trans- mission for COVID-19. "We're kind of in the worst- case scenario at the moment," he said. "We've been unofficially shut down by our government and by the media but we're not getting the same support that we were getting in the spring when we were officially shut down. It's a very tricky spot to be in for the bar and restaurant industry." He said no members of his staff have tested positive for CO- VID-19. "If anyone doesn't feel well they're mandated to stay home and they're not to return to work until they get a negative test re- sult," he said. The Durham Region Health Department confirmed there have been no outbreaks associat- ed with restaurants in Durham. If the health department knew of a specific restaurant where CO- VID-19 was transmitted, that fa- cility would be placed in outbreak status and contact tracing would be completed. "The health department is monitoring the number of people that have tested positive for CO- VID-19 and have dined out at res- taurants during the period of communicability," the health de- partment said in an e-mail. "In ad- dition, public health inspectors are following up with owners and operators to provide information on cleaning and disinfecting after a positive COVID-19 case." Public health inspectors have been proactively inspecting res- taurants to ensure compliance with COVID-19 legislation. They also follow up on complaints re- ceived from the public using a "progressive enforcement ap- proach." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Durhamregion.com asked local restaurants about plans to re-open in the summer, and chose to check in now that patios are shutting down for the cold months. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY A tree for every hero? Landowner partnerships? Forest Ontario's 50 million trees program? A small fly- er in our mailbox snagged my interest and lifted my spirits. Which always hap- pens when I hear that someone's planting trees. Turns out the Highway of Heroes champions are halfway to their admirable goal of lining the route with two million trees, and are looking for more land to plant them on. They're reaching out to anyone liv- ing within 30 km of Hwy. 401 and owning two-and-a- half acres of open land they'd like to reforest, with the possibility of partner- ing up with Forests Onta- rio. Though I don't have two-and-a-half acres my- self, I immediately thought of a reader out Newtonville way who does, and might be interested, so it's defi- nitely worth spreading the word. I'm not sure of details, beyond that every tree will be native to southern Onta- rio -- so valuable to birds, insects and mammals! And how to get connected to the project: phone April Ste- venson, planting steward- ship manager, at 844-277- HERO. Planet Earth needs all the trees it can get these days, to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and combat climate change. It's truly wonderful that groups are planting our share here in Ontario -- as long as we're not filling in the vanishing grasslands our threatened bobolinks, meadowlarks, kingbirds, upland sandpipers, vesper, field and grasshopper spar- rows need for nesting, of course! The Trees for Heroes fly- er was a good reminder to me to get out a shovel for the tree-planting plans I do have this fall. October is the ideal time for it, as sap- lings stop growing and head into dormancy, but will still put down roots in their new home before the ground freezes. Last fall, unbeknownst to us, squirrels buried two black walnuts in our vege- table patch. The sprouts somehow survived the till- ing and hoeing in spring and are now knee-high, surrounded by a fall crop of lettuce and radishes. A neighbour has an even big- ger walnut tree she wants to find a home for, and the two of us are going to move our "volunteers" to a spot we know that's crying out for these magnificent hard- woods. Black walnut trees pro- duce interesting chemi- cals, one of which, juglone, discourages certain other plants from growing near- by and outcompetes them for water and sunlight, though many species are compatible. Meanwhile, the leaves provide food for more than 100 species of butterflies and moths, in- cluding the elegant lime- green luna, and put out a compound that helps re- move carcinogenic hydro- carbons from the air, re- ducing pollution. Let's get planting! Durham nature writer Margaret Carney has more than 4,000 species on her life list of birds, many seen in far-flung corners of our beautiful planet. TO PLANT A TREE MILLINGTON STOPLIGHTS MAKE AJAX SAFER FOR EVERYBODY To the editor: A few Ajax taxpayers slammed the new lights at Millington Crescent for maintenance, carbon emis- sions, fuel consumption and the installation cost. COVID-19 forced some families to seek financial support, and some people are still enjoying govern- ment support to buy mari- juana rather than raising their kids in a healthy envi- ronment -- is it not from our tax payments? In progressive nations, tax is for serving the com- munities' growth and safe- ty. Some Canadian munici- palities dedicate 74 per cent of the revenue and grants on safety measures, police and traffic. With a fatal accident at the crossing, Millington's lights were not just for its residents -- it's for the over- all communities' safety. An interesting fact -- the previ- ous victim did not even live in the Millington commu- nity. At present, the logic of dealing with carbon emis- sions and fuel consump- tion is baseless. With an as- sured positive return on in- vestment in two years, tax might encourage green-ve- hicle initiatives with the in- stallation of new charging points. Thirty years back, with a few cars on Westney and a cheaper installation cost, Millington residents initi- ated discussions on these lights. Although the current cost might be $250,000 com- pared to the budget (esti- mate) of $450,000, yet to be unveiled by the auditor. Now, the push is to have time-and-energy-efficient transit systems without compromising on safety as 'growing together' is im- portant after this pandem- ic that re-established the value of human lives. An economist said, "A progressive country is not where everyone goes to their job in a personal vehi- cle, rather it's where people leave their vehicle to avail the public transit." There could be different schools of thought but tra- ditionally, the statement goes well with Canada and the EU. Before fantasizing about alternative options like relocating the entire neighborhood, we must value those lives for whom Millington Crescent is home, the home where dreams are still blue, where fears are miles away, where the first blossom smiles in spring and warm feeling hugs the harsh win- ter. That was already a big challenge before we even really started and then COVID hits," she add- ed. Organizers originally weren't sure how they would proceed and spon- sors were told by the orga- nizers that the event would be different this year. "We asked if they would be interested. We said we can't give you dinner. Sur- prisingly, one after one af- ter one after one said 'sure, we're back in.' And, not on- ly were they back in, many of them gave more money than they usually did, be- cause they said, 'The hospi- tal needs help. We need to be there for you.' And, we were shocked," she said. "We raised more money than ever before. It's $345,000 that we netted. We needed $300,000 to get us up to the magic $4 million to- tal," she stated. The event founders were back, with Howard Sokolowsky, former Pick- ering Mayor Wayne Ar- thurs and former Ajax Mayor Jim Witty, playing a round. Bill Collier, who was the chair for years, al- so participated. "The old gang was back together again," Paterson said. "The attitude was tre- mendous. It was certainly Since 1995, duffers have gone out to landscape turf for a good cause — the Ajax Pickering Hospital. And, no pandemic was going to change that, al- though the event was modi- fied this year due to restric- tions. However, that didn't stop the tournament this year from being one of the most successful versions in the 25-year history of the Mayors' Charity Golf Clas- sic. It was held on Thurs- day, Sept. 10 at Cherry Downs Golf Club in north Pickering. As Tracy Paterson, the CEO of the hospital's foun- dation, said, "What turned out to be the worst year turned into the best year." All money raised from the event is being used at the hospital on COVID-19 relief, she said. The 25th year was circled on the calendar, as organiz- ers were hoping to pass the $4 million in total money raised over the years. It went "really good. We didn't know at the start of everything; we had these great plans for the 25th an- niversary," Paterson noted. "We needed to pull out all the stops for the 25th. For us to get to $4 million in total funds raises, we need- different. "To go from all these lofty plans on what we're going to do to celebrate the 25th to not having a tourna- ment at all — It was really Howard. He said 'no, the hospital needs money and we're going to do it.' He nev- er looked back," Paterson stated. "They touch so many ar- eas of the hospital. They're very good every year of picking equipment, specif- ic equipment they want to buy for the hospital," she added. "The tournament orga- nizers were involved in helping to secure a CT scanner for the hospital in the early years. They've done a lot for the emergen- cy department. “Orthopedics, urology, maternal and newborn, cardiac, ICU monitoring was last year. Great that we got that. This year is venti- lators and a 'bronco-scope' tower. “The heads of critical care and COVID picked the equipment that they want- ed to determine to buy. They're thrilled that they have that funding," Paterson said. The equipment is bought right away, al- though the delivery date isn't yet known: "Weeks, not months," Paterson said. Reuse. Recycle. Recover. Thank You for Doing Your Part! Katherine Ross, Waste Management Technician for the Region of Durham talks everything Waste. Send your waste related questions or comments to waste@durham.ca If you require this information in an accessible format, please call 1-800-667-5671 •durham.ca/waste From October 19 to 25, 2020, the Region of Durham will celebrate Waste Reduction Week (WRW). Focusing primarily on the principles of circular economy, resource efficiency and waste reduction. WRW celebrates our year-round programs highlighting the environmental efforts and achievements, while encouraging new innovative ideas and solutions. Each day during WRW has a theme that emphasizes daily actions we can take to reduce waste and help our environment. Monday: Circular Economies Products have historically been designed for convenience with no consideration for the waste left behind. Take coffee pods for example; Canadians use 2.8 million of them every day and most end up in the garbage. In a circular economy we design products, so resources can be reused and reinvested in new products. Rather than searching for a recycling solution after a product is designed and brought to market — like the coffee pod — recovery and material reuse is part of the design and manufacturing process of the product from the beginning. Tuesday: Textiles Did you know the average person throws away 37 kilograms of textiles each year, and 95 per cent of those clothes could be reused or recycled? There are many organizations that collect and manage used textiles or clothing, furniture and household goods for donation. The Region has partnered with organizations to collect these materials at our Waste Management Facilities, in apartment/condo buildings and at monthly Reuse Days from March to October each year. Wednesday: Electronic Waste (E-Waste) While electronic materials can contain harmful substances such as mercury, lead and cadmium, which require special handling, there are also valuable and scarce resources in electronics, such as gold, copper, aluminum and other precious metals. Recycling electronic waste (E-Waste) helps reduce the need for new raw materials. Special events, call-in curbside services combined with Durham Region’s drop-off depots allow for the safe recycling of E-Waste. Thursday: Plastics More than eight million plastic bottles are collected each year in the Region’s Blue Box recycling program. This equals 22,000 single-use plastic bottles per day. Make simple changes in your everyday life to avoid the use of single-use plastics. Every action counts. Friday: Food Waste Approximately 63 per cent of the food Canadians throw away could have been eaten. For the average Canadian household that amounts to 140 kilograms of wasted food per year—at a cost of more than $1,100 per year! Visit durham.ca/BuyItEatIt to learn more about how to plan meals, store your food and get creative with leftovers because edible food doesn’t belong in the Green Bin. Saturday: Sharing Economy Millions of Canadians engage in the sharing economy everyday – through ride sharing apps, libraries, rental services, online music/video streaming and more. Sharing Economy is an excellent opportunity to engage with organizations offering services that allow us to rent, borrow and share products/services instead of owning. Sunday: Swap and Repair To avoid extracting additional resources from the earth, find alternatives to purchasing new products. Swap products with someone. Join a cooperative that promotes product sharing or repair what you already have. Practicing the 4Rs to reduce waste from our daily lives will help to conserve resources and protect our environment. What actions do you take to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover? Visit durham.ca/waste for more information. The Pickering Town Centre is getting creative to make the best use of blank wall space at the mall. In line with the trend in malls across North America, Picker- ing Town Centre and Cushman and Wakefield Asset Services have launched a new program that brings together the busi- ness, arts and non-profit com- munities while providing art- work for the public to enjoy, through its Mall Wall Crawl pro- ject. The first mural is located in- side Entrance 4, and focuses on positive messages. This partner- ship brings together The Fortis Group from the business com- munity and the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation from the non-profit sector. The mural was created by artist Liviya Hor- batuik who also works on staff at Pickering Town Centre. Participating businesses fund the project with a portion allocated to the charity and an honorarium paid to the artist. "We are thrilled to launch the first wall mural in the Mall Wall Crawl project," said Lorna Mur- phy, Pickering Town Centre's marketing director. "As the hub of the communi- ty, we want to support the arts and bring together local busi- nesses and non-profit partners — all while enhancing the guest experience." Pickering Town Centre has also launched a consumer con- test. Customers can snap a pho- to or a selfie at the wall mural and share it on social media for a chance to win a $100 Pickering Town Centre Gift Card. Beloved husband of Kathleen. Much loved Father of Mark, Eric, Alison, Matthew, Amy and Andy. Arrangements entrusted to the ALEXANDER & HOULE FUNERAL HOME, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, 519-352-2710 alexanderfuneralhome.ca HENDERSON, Sherrill Diane July 4, 1936 - October 3, 2020 ___________ At 10:10 a.m. on October 3, 2020, we said our sad goodbyes to Sherrill Henderson (nee Stanley) at our Pickering condo home. She passed peacefully, surrounded by all of her children - Jo-Anne (Chris) Crossing; Sandra (Greg) James; Steven; Scott (Charlene); and Sharon (Paul) Tambeau - her sister, Marilyn (Tony) Keenan, and her dearest friend, Willy Balvers, as her loving husband, David played her favourite songs on the keyboard. Sherrill was born in Montreal on July 4, 1936, to Hector and Muriel Stanley. Beloved wife of David Henderson for more than 63 years, the couple met in November 1956 at The Como Inn, Hudson, Quebec. Dave was the bandleader at the Inn. Fittingly, when they married on June 29, 1957, the wedding reception was at The Como Inn. Sherrill was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi, in Montreal and, later, Toronto. For twenty years, she was a Centenary Hospital volunteer in emergency, assisting in its fracture clinic with Dr. Patrick McGrath. She was involved in many sporting activities, including figure skating, gymnastics instructor, swimming timer and place judge. Always an avid sports fan, she had season tickets to the Toronto Blue Jays and was present for their World Series game 6 win at Toronto's Skydome in 1993. Sherrill assisted friend Willy Balvers with special events and bus trips from the Pickering condo that has been home for twenty years. Mostly with Dave, but often with friends and family, Sherrill travelled the world. She and Dave have been to over 120 countries on 6 continents. They have enjoyed almost 100 cruises, more than half of them with Celebrity Cruises, where they are members of the Captain's Club top cruisers category. She will be greatly missed, not only by all the folks listed above, but by her grandchildren in Canada: Alex James; Kyle James+Courtney Walker; Shannon Henderson; as well as her grandchildren in USA and "their kids" (Sherrill's great -grandchildren)in Pennsylvania: Ryan and Jenn Crossing (and Ty, Diala, Killian); Mark Crossing and Justina Grabowski ; Erin and Ryan Hoffman (and Emma, Zachary); Sean Crossing and also her honourary grandchildren (courtesy Sharon) in Canada: Phillip and Janine Kaye, and Christa and Matt McClearn. Many thanks to special friend Willy Balvers for her love and support; all the personal service workers who tended to Sherrill's needs; nurses Muniba and Sondra Leblanc; and doctors Aubrey Kassirer, Amamoo, Barry, Wang and Wong. She also sends special thanks to her children, their spouses, and to Dave for their constant love and support. Sherrill, we'll all miss you so very much! Rest in peace, lovely lady. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation in memory of Sherrill to The Canadian Liver Foundation, 801-3100 Steeles Avenue East, Markham ON L3R 8T3. A private funeral service and interment has been held. Arrangements entrusted to McEachnie Funeral Home, Ajax, 905- 428-8488. Please visit www.mceachniefuneral.ca to view Sherrill's service and/or leave an online condolences. Greg of Stayner, formerly of Ajax, loving son of Andrea Bates and Rick Bates and his wife Jinna Findlay. Dear brother of Laura Bates and her husband Richard Paul. Beloved uncle of Jacob Urban. Greg will also be missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins along with many friends and neighbours. Greg was an avid scuba diver as a member of the Ajax Scuba Club and loved to dive with his Dad. As the former owner of Bates Security Systems Inc., Greg was considered the technology expert by his friends and family. Remembrance Day Feature Will publish November 5, 2020 Deadline is 9 a.m.Monday,Monday,Monday November 2nd. Pleasant in manner, patient in pain, our loss is your eternal gain. Time may heal the broken-hearted, time may make the wound less sore; but time will never stop the longing for the loved one gone before. In my heart your memory lingers, always tender, fond and true; there’s not a day, dear friend, I do not think of you. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God’s holy angel bore our darling one away. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE OBITUARIESHOLIDAY IN MEMORIAMS dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , O c t o b e r 1 5 , 2 0 2 0 | 18 CABINET MAKER WANTED Custom millwork shop looking for full time cabinet maker/ installer.
