"The fact that we've lost the customer amounts that we have due to people being concerned (with being out in public), cou- pled with trying to fight online shopping and the large retailers, it's been devastating for us," said General Manager Erik Tamm. About 10 per cent of vendors have closed. "We're operating at a loss," Tamm said. His family has run the Mar- kets for 40 years and he has mem- ories of it from his youth. PICKERING MAN, 23, DIES AFTER MOTORCYCLE CRASH NEWS Durham police are seek- ing the public's help in lo- cating a 19-year-old suspect in a Pickering stabbing. Police say the stabbing oc- curred after an altercation between several males, and the suspect fled on foot. Of- ficers searched the area but could not find him. The victim was transported by ambulance to a Toronto-ar- ea trauma centre with life- threatening injuries. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARYYou get to sleep in, not stirring until long after noisy, busy songbirds are up and away, and the sun is well above the horizon. You shift sleepily, stretch and spread your wings, absorb- ing the warming rays. Then finally bend your head and preen a bit. Feathers are all-important, especially now. Winds are calm, the sky clear, and soon thermals will be ris- ing, good travel conditions for the next stage of your endless flight. A day in the life of a mi- grating raptor... just imag- ine it. Every year we hu- mans gaze up in awe and watch them pass by -- hawks, falcons, harriers, eagles, singly or in pairs, in small flocks, by the dozens, on their way south for the winter. What if we could be up there with them, feeling the shifting air, seeing the world through their eyes? You'd get to pick your fa- vourite, of course. How about a slim grey merlin, speeding by over the tree- tops, in pursuit of a stream of migrating blue jays? A muscular red-tailed hawk, flap-flap-flapping its wide buteo wings, then gliding for a rest? A long-tailed Cooper's hawk? Powerful peregrine? Or you could be king of the skies, soaring on metre-long wings -- a bald eagle. For me, I'd choose the turkey vulture, the most elegant, efficient flier of the lot. Back at the vulture roosting tree, it's time to lift off. Taking your turn among your travelling companions, you rouse yourself and rise into the air, slowly pumping your long black pointy wings. Like the others, you soon feel a rising column of warm air and start to ride it, settling your wings in a wide V and tipping a bit from side to side while cir- cling ever higher. Up and up you float, your roosting tree, the woods around it, the fields and streams and farms and towns becoming smaller and smaller below. Then one by one you peel off from your circling kettle and, kites freed from their tethers, speed on your way, gradually dropping in ele- vation until you reach the next thermal, and ride it up again. Despite my terror of heights, I love sitting at an airplane window and watching the earth below. Wouldn't it be awesome to fly down from cottage country and over the Oak Ridges Moraine, to find Lake Ontario spread out before you, a blue expanse? To veer west along the shore of it and Lake Erie, then join a million other raptors streaming along the Mississippi Flyway to- ward Texas and the Gulf, all the way to Mexico. And maybe beyond. 'A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MIGRATING RAPTOR' COLUMNIST MARGARET CARNEY SAYS HAWKS, EAGLES AND OTHER BIRDS OF PREY ARE ON THE MOVE MARGARET CARNEY Column CALL IT ‘THE UNEXPLAINABLE’ To the editor: Every day, thousands of residents drive into the busy Amberlea Plaza on Whites Road in Pickering. Immediately, they are greeted by a mass of steel and wires reaching to the heavens. After years, all are used to it, but I stopped this week and took a photo. I al- ways waited for this struc- ture to be finished, but af- ter years it clearly is a fin- ished product. I know what it is but I have to wonder why it looks like this in the age of build- ing cell towers that look like majestic pines, such as on Fairport Road overlook- ing the cemetery, for all to admire. I want to blame someone in true NIMBY- ism but it is not in my back- yard. I want to ask ques- tions of our politicians or city planners, but why? They know it is there and they must have approved it. But in a world where there are far more impor- tant issues, such as gun fire on Whites Road, I decided the best thing to do is treat it as a work of art, a true monument to the cyber so- ciety where we no longer need wires to communi- cate. So I gave it a name: 'The Unexplainable'. JOHN RANDOLPH PICKERING TAXPAYERS SHOULD COVER SCHOOL PPE COSTS To the editor: Re: Taxpayers shouldn't pick up tab for PPE in schools. With citizens providing Covid protection for staff and students in public schools through tax-sup- ported programs, everyone can do their part to stop the Covid spread despite finan- cial background. Many people who are able will use their own PPE but others will need equip- ment provided by govern- ment. When we read opinions such as those expressed by the Brugos, we are remind- ed of how much we all rely on tax-supported initia- tives. Of course, some may feel that they don't benefit from certain programs and shouldn't have to pay taxes, but if we broaden our thinking we can see how in- directly we are better off. As examples, we don't ob- ject to paying taxes to sup- port seniors who haven't provided for their own re- tirement or we don't object to fire services just because we haven't had a fire. As a tax-paying senior, I support government pro- grams which help to make our society a better place for all. Prem Khullar's father opened Telephone Plus at the old flea market at Brock Road and Pickering Park- way, eventually moving the business to Squires Beach Road. "The Pickering Markets is a big part of my life," Khullar said. The company takes up nearly one entire aisle at the marketplace and has a wholesale division in Markham. King Kabob is another loyal vendor. "It's a family business so we have been in business in The Pickering Markets for 30 years," said owner Mike Baltzis. His family started sell- ing raw kabobs but eventu- ally made the food hot and ready. To both of these busi- nesses, their current situa- tion could be worse. "I'm not saying we're do- ing record members by any means," Khullar said. "I thought the first week I wouldn't make rent." But he did, and he was able to pay staff and his suppliers. "But did I have much left in my pocket? No," he said. Baltzis, too, said busi- ness could be worse. "I thought we would re- ally be struggling hard," he said. Focusing on social me- dia is one of the strategies King Kabob has taken to stay relevant. "We've had to come back a little stronger with kind of defining who we are. We've gone back to making everything for ourselves," he said. And the family has started a food delivery ser- vice, featuring ready-to- cook options, a step it plans to fall back on if a second wave hits. "We've had to think out of the box a lot and we've had to come out of our com- fort zone a little bit, which means a lot more work for us," Baltzis said. Both Baltzis and Khul- lar were grateful the Mar- kets didn't charge its ven- dors rent while it was shut down. But the Markets still paid its own rent, and lost more than $800,000 during lockdown. The City of Pickering did lower the $1,000 the company normally pays per operational day to $100 for the summer when Tamm requested relief. "Our staff has advised Pickering Markets that the request for an extension must be submitted in writ- ing to be included as part of council agenda at a future council meeting," Mayor Dave Ryan said when asked about the current status. Tamm believes that with every downturn comes new opportunity. Some new exciting vendors are people who lost their job and decided to start a new business. "Our food court is at 100 per cent capacity," he said. "There are optimistic signs that we will survive." As the public fears a sec- ond wave, Tamm is taking it week by week. "Obviously we're hoping like every other business that it doesn't happen, and if it does, that the govern- ment looks at what they are shutting down in respect to how it will affect the econo- my and protecting people as well," he said. He said there needs to be a focus on support for small- to medium-sized businesses. "(The government) didn't help us a lot the first time and I really don't know how we'd get through another without govern- ment support," he said. "But we remain optimis- tic that people do their due diligence and really help stop these numbers from going up." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: The small busi- nesses at The Pickering Markets represent a large part of the economy that is hurting financially from COVID-19. Stolen bank notes, cash and a replica handgun were seized when officers arrested two men and a woman in connection with the incident, Toronto po- lice said. On Tuesday, Sept. 15 two masked men entered an of- fice in the area of McNi- choll Avenue and Middle- field Road, confronting em- ployees with guns and binding them with duct tape and electrical cord, police said. One of the men kept watch over three hos- tages while the other forced a fourth employee out of the building at gun- point. The 32-year-old victim was driven to a nearby bank where he was threat- ened and forced to carry out transactions, with- drawing large amounts of money in bank notes and then handing them over to the armed suspect, police said. The man with the gun left on foot. The victim called his office and learned the other suspect had fled, police said. Two men and a woman were arrested the next day. At around 8 a.m. he spotted a cormorant hang- ing by its beak from a fish- ing lure that was wrapped around a hydro wire, and the bird was clearly in dis- tress. "I was fishing a little fur- ther out from the (Picker- ing Nuclear Generating Station) and working my way in," the Pickering resi- dent said. Rickard, a catch-and-re- lease angler, said someone must have been casting a fishing line and it became stuck around the wire. He quickly grabbed his chest camera, turned it on and without hesitation went to work to free the bird. But it wasn't easy. "The problem I had is the current is so strong in there," Rickard said. The struggle is clear in the video, "Rescuing Bird From Certain Death," which he posted to his You- Tube channel. Rickard has a trolling motor that he can lock, which allows his boat to stay in one spot, and he was able to maintain his posi- tion below the bird. "So, I went in and grabbed him," he said. "I have giant hands, which came in very handy. His neck was quivering. As far as I'm aware, he was hang- ing there all night." Rickard was able to cut the bird down from the wire but there was still work to do — he had to re- move the three hooks that were stuck in its beak. The bird fought Rickard a little bit at first. "Don't bite me; I'm try- ing to help you here, bud," Rickard says at one point in the video. He secured the bird be- tween his knees, held its beak with one hand and used the other to remove the hooks and line. "I got everything out of there," Rickard said. "He flew off, which was good." He's modest about the rescue. "I think anybody with a heart and any sort of com- passion would do the same thing," he said. Although Rickard did receive some flack online for helping a bird that's of- ten regarded as a nuisance, he doesn't regret it. "To me, it's a bird in pain or suffering," he said. "He would have died a horrible death." R Ajax Fire and Emergen- cy Services personnel want residents to Get Real about fire safety. The bi-annual Get Real Ajax Campaign aims to raise awareness about fire safety, with a focus on edu- cating residents about safe- ty and fire-related prob- lems. It runs to Oct. 16 and during the campaign some homes will receive an auto- mated message from Fire Chief Dave Lang with tips on how to protect your fam- ily from fire. "The Get Real Ajax cam- paign has been very suc- cessful in educating our residents about fire safety issues in the community. It is an excellent opportunity for our firefighters to inter- act with our residents and answer any questions that they have regarding fire safety and prevention," Lang said in a statement. Some households will receive a Get Real Ajax in- formation card in the mail and a door-to-door visit from Ajax firefighters to discuss the reality of fires in the community. Residents can also watch a Get Real Ajax fire safety video and posts on the Town's Facebook and Twitter accounts, and in- teract by using the hashtag #GetRealAjax. Lang hopes that through education, awareness and teamwork fire-related fa- talities, injuries and prop- erty damage can be re- duced across the Town. To learn more, visit ajax.ca/fire. GET REAL ABOUT FIRE SAFETY IN AJAX Ajax Fire and Emergency Services is again running its Get Real Ajax Campaign, which aims to educate residents about fire safety. The initiative runs to Oct. 16. This glaring abuse of power and blatant disre- gard for the dignity of hu- man life might be viewed by some as merely an un- fortunate occurrence. Re- grettably, for too many people this is not just an uncommon event but rath- er an all too familiar expe- rience, especially if you are a Black individual. The families of Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, Philando Castille, Botham Jean, Eric Garner, Sterling Higgins, Buddy Evans, Al- bert Johnson, Lester Don- aldson, Wade Lawson, Hugh Dawson, Faraz Sule- man, Sean Reed and others too numerous to mention can bear witness. Why are Black people, more than any other group of people, disproportional- ly targeted to experience violence, prejudice, dis- crimination, intolerance or hatred? The answer is encapsulated in a single word -- racism. Children are born with- out the blemish of racism. So how do so many of them grow up to become avowed racist individuals? Racism is a learned, irrational, in- sidious and pervasive mul- tidisciplinary phenome- non that encompasses eth- nicity, religion, culture, race, language, gender identification and skin col- our. It is prejudice, dis- crimination, or antago- nism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. It can also be described as the erroneous belief that all members of a race pos- sess characteristics, abili- ties and or qualities specif- ic to that race, so as to dis- tinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Anti-Black racism can best be understood by closely examining the uniqueness of our heri- tage. We are descendants of people who did not come to America voluntarily or willingly. Our ancestors were kidnapped or bought and transported as chattel (personal property) of Eu- ropeans to be sold as slaves. They were uproot- ed from their homes, cul- tures, customs and tradi- tions. They were poorly housed, poorly fed, en- dured social, religious, spiritual and educational depravation. They were made to work for genera- tions without wages. They were brutalized, dehu- manized, demonized, de- moralized, oppressed, de- pressed, isolated, ostra- cized, raped, lynched and murdered. This is a legacy that is not shared by any other group of immigrants living today in Canada or the USA and one that is of- ten not recognized, ac- knowledged or accepted. Unfortunately, there still exist today many people whose thinking about Blacks has not yet (and probably never will) evolved. The principal form of modern-day racism -- the colour-coded white over black variety -- did not have any significance in medieval roots and is mainly a product of the modern period. Whitby resident Rapha- el Francis is the past presi- dent of the Pickering Car- ib-Canadian Cultural Association and is striving for an equitable, diverse and inclusive society ANTI-BLACK RACISM 'MAINLY PRODUCT OF MODERN PERIOD' OPINION COLUMNIST RAPHAEL FRANCIS NOTES 'RACISM IS LEARNED' RAPHAEL FRANCIS Column Anti-Black racism can best be understood by closely examining the uniqueness of our heritage. dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 2 4 , 2 0 2 0 | 18 New to Durham Region? Armen Ketenjian of Pickering and Ankeen Be- drosian of Mississauga matched the last six of sev- en ENCORE numbers in exact order in the Aug. 29 LOTTO MAX draw to win $100,000. The young couple decid- ed to pick up the ticket on a whim. Ketenjian had just won a pair of sneakers in a raffle, so Bedrosian sug- gested that they pick up a lottery ticket to continue their streak. But this was only the third time Ankeen has ever played the lottery. Ketenjian gave his ticket to his dad to check on the OLG Lottery App. "I was still waking up and my dad was yelling for me to come downstairs. I thought something was wrong," he said, while at the OLG Prize Centre in To- ronto to pick up his cheque. I ran in and saw my dad holding up his phone. I Fac- eTimed Ankeen and told her to come over because I had some good news to share." For now, the pair plans to save their winnings and agree this win feels both like a blessing and a safety net. "I feel thankful. This makes it easier for us to move onto the next stage of our lives," Bedrosian said. The winning ticket was purchased at HarbourView Convenience on Navy Wharf Court in Toronto. Pickering is currently divided into three wards, each represented by the mayor, along with one re- gional councillor and one city councillor. Geographic boundaries and council re- presentation can be viewed on the city's interactive ward map. The current structure has been in place for around 40 years, with the exception of a minor change to the city's ward boundaries in 2005. The review will identify effective and equitable electoral arrangements for the 2022 municipal election and beyond, taking into ac- count changes in the size and distribution of Picker- ing's population since the present wards were estab- lished, as well as the city's forecasted population growth. "Pickering is experienc- ing tremendous growth, and a key focus of this re- view will be making sure that the number of people in each ward is balanced and that we have effective representation for our resi- dents," Mayor Dave Ryan said. "We have retained an independent consultant to lead this municipal review and encourage residents to get involved as opportuni- ties arise." Residents are invited to take part in one of four vir- tual open houses to learn more and provide feedback on Wednesday, Oct. 7 or Thursday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days. Visit pickering.ca/WBR for more information and details on the upcoming virtual open houses. Pickering's executive committee re- ceived a staff report on Sept. 14 on what a potential heritage property tax grant pro- gram would look like. At a July council meeting, and in an ef- fort to encourage property owners to pro- tect Pickering's heritage, Ward 1 city Coun- cillor Maurice Brenner and Ward 3 city Councillor Shaheen Butt asked staff to look into a potential program. City staff have identified 173 properties as having historical significance or in an area of historical significance. The properties were sorted into three groups. The potential city costs in the re- port are based on a rebate of 20 percent of the city's share of property taxes. Fifty properties are in the group that would likely qualify, with a potential city cost of $22,000. The second group, which may qualify, identifies 26 properties that could cost the city $11,000 if they meet specific criteria. The third category identifies 97 proper- ties that could qualify in the future, and could cost the city $43,000. These proper- ties would not qualify now but may qualify in the future, as the federal government owns 77 properties and 20 are owned by the provincial government. If these properties were ever sold, they may qualify for a grant. The matter will likely come before council in December, with a goal to make it effective beginning in January 2021. Ernest John Leyland, born June 1st 1939, St. Helen's, Merseyside, England. Passed away September 11th 2020, Ajax, Ontario. Ernie was a mechanical engineer, who worked and travelled extensively with the merchant navy aboard the M.V. Nottingham. After settling in Ontario, he married his wife of 49 years, Lynda. Together, they built a life that centered around family, travel, gardening, and mutual happiness. Ernie had a brilliant mind and quick wit. His breadth of knowledge made him an easy conversationalist and his unassuming and steadfast manner put people at ease. He was an avid gardener tending to fruits, vegetables, chrysanthemums, and countless other plants in his greenhouse and the garden he and Lynda created. It would be a labour of love for more than 40 years. He spent many hours walking the trails of the Greenwood conservation area with his family and their dogs; the memories of these times are treasured by all with whom they were experienced. Ernie was a craftsman - utilizing his engineering skills to build furniture and boats for family and loved ones. His interests, everything from cooking to classical music, were instilled in his children and will remain gifts that continue to be cultivated. Ernie is survived by his wife Lynda (nee MacGregor), son Adam (Helen), and daughter Sarah (Mike). He was the proud Grandad of Charlie and Clare, and an ever loving Gaga to Ollie and Julian. He is also survived by his sister Irene, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Hilda, father Ernest, and sisters Theresa and Rita. At this time, there will be no memorial service due to pandemic restrictions. A celebration of life gathering will follow at a later date. If one so desires, donations may be made to the Toronto Zoo.
