A STRONGER VOICE DURHAMREGION.COM/ COMMUNITYDIVERSITY The number of COVID-19 cases in Pickering has risen, and people aged 20 to 39 make up most of them. "They've been going out and it's really difficult for them to maintain in their social bubbles, so that really triggered the surge of cases in this age group," said Dr. Winnie Sun, an assistant pro- fessor in the faculty of health sci- ences at Ontario Tech University. This seems to be the general trend in Ontario, and Sun said gatherings such as barbecues and trips to the beach have likely contributed to the spike. The Durham Region COVID-19 Data Tracker indicates that the latest cases documented in Pick- ering are resulting from travel, within the community and from unknown exposures, but mostly from contact with a case. Pickering has had the most cases in Durham with 639. As of Sept. 14, 16 active cases were in home isolation and one was in the hospital. The 78 people who died at the Orchard Villa long-term care home and retirement residence make up a large portion of Picker- ing's high total. The Durham Re- gion Health Department said, in PICKERING COVID-19 CASES ON THE RISE See PROVINCE, page 8 KRISTEN CALIS KCalis@durhamregion.com Frenchman's Bay East, located at the bottom of Liverpool Road. A 60-year-old man sus- tained bruising after being struck by a projectile in one of the incidents reported Sept. 9, Durham police said. Police are appealing to the public for information as the investigation contin- ues. Police were alerted around 3:25 p.m. of suspects firing a paintball gun from a vehicle near Carruthers Creek Public School as chil- dren played in the area. No injuries were reported but within an hour another re- port of a paintball being fired came from Talbot- shire Street, police said. In a third incident, po- lice said a man working in his garden on Rollo Drive was struck by a projectile. It's believed three sus- pects were involved and they were in a gold-col- oured four-door sedan, po- lice said. Call police at 905-579- 1520, ext. 2521 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. ONE VICTIM INJURED IN RASH OF PAINTBALL SHOOTINGS IN AJAX NEWS Multiple shots were fired at a house in Picker- ing late last month and po- lice are hoping a surveil- lance image will help iden- tify the suspect. Police were called to Madonna Court — in the Liverpool and Finch Ave- nue area — at about 10:40 p.m. on Aug. 28 for a report of gunshots. A white vehicle was see entering Madonna Court, where it briefly stopped in front of a home. Police said "numerous" shots were fired, hitting the house and a parked vehicle. No one was injured. In- vestigators do not believe it was a random attack. Anyone with dash cam footage or home-security cameras in the area is asked to contact police at 1- 888-579-1520 ext. 2526. Pickering Animal Ser- vices has changed up the way it adopts out animals due to COVID-19, but is still finding homeless pets the perfect match. When the provincial gov- ernment called for the clo- sure of facilities in March, the shelter closed its doors to the public, and so did the satellite adoption centre, PetSmart in Pickering. "At first we shut every- thing down and put every- thing on hold," said Lindsey Narraway, supervisor of Pickering Animal Services. While still caring for pets at the shelter, staff had to think of alternate ways to get the animals into good homes. They immediately created an emergency fos- ter program for the dogs. "We fostered those dogs into homes in order to get the proper care and atten- tion that was needed for them," Narraway said. On April 24 animal ser- vices launched its new on- line adoption program. "Since that time we have received 178 applications to adopt animals," said Nar- raway. From Jan 1 to Aug. 31, animal services has adopt- ed out 157 pets -- only a slight change from last year's total in that same time frame, which was 167. Potential adopters now view the adoptable pets and fill out an adoption form online. If the potential adopter seems to be a good fit on paper, staff will call them for a phone interview. The communication can also include video chats or sim- ply video of the pet in order to give the adopter a better idea of what they're like. "That's basically to com- pensate for them not com- ing in to actually officially meet the animals," Narra- way said. If the adopter is success- ful, when it's time to bring their new pet home, they bring a carrier, drop it off at the animal shelter door and the shelter staff bring the pet outside in the carri- er. The adopter doesn't physically get to meet their new pet until they let them out of the carrier at home. "It's very different than their traditional program but it's been working," Nar- raway said. "So far, we don't have any plans of changing that at this time." Animal services has found the new process ben- eficial. "We're building a lot of really good relationships with our adopters just based on the increased time we're spending with them to ensure when they get them home, they're go- ing to be really happy with their pet and it's the right fit," Narraway said. Cats can now be viewed and adopted out from Pet- Smart once again, but due to safety requirements, inter- ested adopters are still not allowed to go into the adop- tion room or interact with the available cats. People can view from the glass win- dow while volunteers inter- act with the cat so potential owners can get a sense of the cat's personality. Pickering Animal Services photo NEWS As summer winds down, and the hot tempera- tures lift while the cold hasn't set in yet, why not make the most of getting outside with your dog? Here is a list of the best places to walk your best bud in Durham. GRAND VALLEY PARK IN PICKERING This is a great spot where you can both take your dog for a leashed walk around the park or at the nearby Seaton Hiking Trail, as well as enjoy some leash-free play time in one of two designated areas. The main leash-free area is the gated and fenced area located west of the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. The smaller leash-free ar- ea is for those with mobil- ity issues or for those with small dogs. This is the gat- ed and fenced area adja- cent and close to the park- ing lot. Grand Valley Park is located on the Third Con- cession, west of Valley Farm Road in Pickering. UXBRIDGE COUNTRYSIDE PRESERVE With 140 acres of rolling meadowlands, woodlands, wetlands and ponds, criss- crossed by 6 kilometres of marked trails, humans and canines alike will love ex- ploring this outdoor oasis. Parking and access behind Walmart at 6 Welwood Dr., Uxbridge. BOWMANVILLE LEASH-FREE DOG PARK The leash-free park in Bowmanville is located south of Hwy. 401 in the Bowmanville Harbour Conservation Area. It's a beautiful spot with lots to see, as well as a space for your dog to run free. Take Liberty Street South to Lake Road. Turn east on Lake Road and then south at Port Darlington Road. After crossing the rail- road tracks, turn west on- to West Beach Road. Fol- low the signs, and the park is on the south side of the road. HARMONY VALLEY CONSERVATION AREA Oshawa has no shortage of great, scenic trails for walking with our good boys and girls including Lake- view Park, Lakerfront West Park, the Oshawa Creek trail and the Harmo- ny Creek trail. But the pick of the litter, so to speak, is the Harmony Valley Con- servation Area, which is the hub of the city's doggy social life with its popular off-leash park. Beyond the designated off-leash area, dog walkers can snap the leash on and explore the park's approximately 28 hectares, including its winding trails. It contains a mix of habitats, including hardwood forests, conifer- ous plantations, open fields, meadows and wet- lands. Whether you prefer sticking to a traditional trail or getting a little clos- er to nature, this is the city's best spot to walk a dog and make new friends! GREENWOOD CONSERVATION AREA Ajax has two off-leash dog parks and a beautiful trail along the waterfront. But the Greenwood Con- servation Area is a favou- rite of many dog moms and dads. It has beautiful views and a large area for dogs to run and play off leash. The entrance is lo- cated on Church Street North, north of Taunton Road and just south of Concession 5. HEBER DOWN CONSERVATION AREA Whitby has plenty of green space to bring your furry friend to, but the He- ber Down Conservation Area is an ideal place for both humans and human's best friend alike. The beau- tiful location offers plenty to see as well as an off-leash area for the dogs to run and play. It's located at the of Cochrane Street, south of Winchester Road West (Hwy. 7), within the conser- vation area. Cases declined in Au- gust and rose again in early September. Sun wasn't sur- prised, as more places, such as restaurants and malls, opened up when On- tario shifted to Stage 3. As of Sept. 14, there were five confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pickering schools. The Durham Dis- trict School Board report- ed two positive cases at Ma- ple Ridge Public School and another two at Pine Ridge Secondary School on Sept. 14. The board's re- porting tool does not speci- fy whether the cases are in students or staff. École élé- mentaire Ronald-Marion in Pickering reported a positive case on Sept. 11. The health department said, "All sectors are pre- paring for a second wave and additional cases this fall." The risk of a second wave is not only due to school being back in ses- sion, but with colder weather, outdoor activities tend to shift indoors, said Sun. She stressed the im- portance of sticking to so- cial bubbles and getting the flu shot. Businesses and health departments can also do their part. "Even if contract trac- ing is hard to maintain, I think for the inside mall when things are shifting indoors, we really have to make sure our indoor envi- ronments have good venti- lation," Sun said. She stresses thorough and regular cleaning of surfaces. "We've done everything that needs to be done. It does come at a cost, but one we think is worth it," said The Pickering Markets general manager Erik Tamm. He said the market's high ceilings and the ven- dors' use of fans creates natural air movement. Mall traffic at the Pick- ering Town Centre has re- turned to 75 per cent of typ- ical volume, and most re- tailers have reopened. Ac- cording to the website, the mall has installed direc- tional flow signage and ad- ditional hand sanitizer units, and implemented in- creased cleaning of touch points and washrooms. The mall is offering curb- side pickup, and some ame- nities and programs re- main closed. If the health department notices an increase of cases in certain "exposure set- tings," such as bars or among specific groups of people, it would target them with social media messaging. If the region sees a large spike in cases, it will look at its monitoring indicators that show how well it's do- ing in areas such as virus spread and containment, health system capacity and lab testing. "If these monitoring in- dicators are not favoura- ble, then Durham Region, like may other areas, may be moved back into Stage 2 by the provincial govern- ment," the health depart- ment said. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: As cases go up, durhamregion.com wanted to look into what's causing this and who it's affecting. NEWS Continued from page 1 PROVINCE COULD BUMP DURHAM 'BACK INTO STAGE 2' 97 per cent of retailers have reopened at the Pickering Town Centre, and mall traffic has returned to 75 per cent of pre-pandemic levels. The free Presto cards can be picked up at the Pickering Town Centre guest servic- es, the Oshawa Centre guest services and the DRT Customer Service Centre, 110 Westney Rd. S., Ajax. Using the Presto RESTO payment method means a savings of $10 for every 14 trips. Customers travelling on DRT can also download and use the new Presto E-Tick- ets app and save the $6 card fee. If you an- swered “by buying local,” you’ve hit the nail on the head. Not only is the food pur- chased from the growers and artisans in your community ex- ceedingly fresh, but it’s also packed with flavour and is more nutritious to boot. And say goodbye to preservatives: since local eats are consumed quickly, there’s no need to use sulphites or other chemicals to keep them safe for consump- tion. What’s more, buying local will reduce your carbon foot- print. Far fewer fossil fuels are burned as neither you nor the goods have to travel very far. And as they don’t need to with- stand long journeys, local prod- ucts (food, clothes, toys, cos- metics, etc.) require far less packaging. Supporting local business owners — who hire locals and don’t see you as just another number! — means that you’re also boosting the local econo- my, which in turn attracts inves- tors and helps the whole com- munity to thrive. Best of all, local merchants can offer you unique and origi- nal products, and since you live nearby, personalized customer service is that much easier to attain. No doubt about it: when you shop next door, everyone wins! — Newspaper Toolbox Buying local: the savvy and selfless way to spend your dollars Now offering online courses in Advanced and Diabetes foot care Contact us 905-839-0080 www.footcareacademy.ca • NailTrimming • Foot Care Assessments • Monitoring & Care of Diabetic Feet • Callous or CornTreatment • Fungal NailTreatments • Athletes Foot • HealthTeaching • IngrownToe Nails • Rams Horns • Foot Massage • Padding & Strapping • Bunions FootCareAcademyNominated BestFootCareClinic We would love to have your vote Real Estate Law▶ Wills and Estates▶ Corporate and Commercial▶ Discounts offered for Wills and Powers of Attorney for Real Estate Clients 619 Brock Street South, Whitby www.durhamlawyer.ca (905) 668-4486 2013 2012Diamond 201 3 READE RS’C H OICE A WARD GOLD 20 1 5 READE RS’C HOICEA WARD DIAMOND 20 1 6 READE RS’C HOICEA WARD DIAMOND Lawyers and Mediators LLP 2020 Readers’ Choice Advertising Feature dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 7 , 2 0 2 0 | 18 www.canadawindowsanddoors.com 905-665-1506119 Consumers Drive, Whitby .canadawindowsanddoors.com 905-665-1506 ProudlyServingDurhamSince1991 Glass and screen repairsGlass and Glass and sscreen creen repairsairsGlass and screen repairs Weekday Same Day Service Available!Weekday Same Day Service Available! Thank You for Doing Your Part! Katherine Ross, Waste Management Technician for the Region of Durham talks everything Waste. Send your waste related questions or comments to waste@durham.ca If you require this information in an accessible format, please call 1-800-667-5671 •durham.ca/waste Mixed Waste Pre-sort and AD is another example of a made in Durham solution While Durham’s population continues to grow—expected to reach more than 1 million people in the next decade—more residents will mean more organic waste, recyclables and garbage to manage. To plan for this growth, the Region is developing a Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility that will convert organic waste into a renewable natural gas. The Mixed Waste Pre-sort facility will remove materials—such as food scraps and recyclables—from garbage collected at the curb and from multi-residential buildings. It will not replace or eliminate the current Green Bin or Blue Box program. Instead, the Mixed Waste Pre-sort facility will sort out organics and recyclables from the garbage bags that were not separated into the green bin or the blue box. This will help Durham maximize diversion efforts. AD is a natural composting process that uses microbes found in the environment to break down the waste. This composting process naturally produces methane, which can be collected and cleaned for use as a renewable natural gas; essentially converting organic materials, such as food scraps, into renewable energy. We will reduce the amount of waste that is currently being processed at the Durham York Energy Centre (DYEC) while creating a valuable renewable natural gas that can offset the use of fossil fuels. There are no stack emissions or combustion involved in the AD process. The Mixed Waste Pre-sort and AD facility will not release odours due to a negative pressure system that will be within the facility and the use of bio-filters to remove odour causing components. The new facility will be located next to the DYEC in the Energy Park located in Clarington and will only accept waste from Durham Region. By converting Durham’s waste into renewable natural gas, a valuable resource and renewable energy, the Mixed Waste Pre-sort and AD facility can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate local economic benefits. The Mixed Waste Pre-sort and AD facility with an Energy from Waste plant, will be a first of its kind, fully integrated waste management initiative in North America. Learn more about this project and the environmental leadership underway in Durham Region at durham.ca/ADProject. As of Sept. 11, Durham has one confirmed case of COVID-19 in a school — a staff member at École élémentaire Ronald-Marion in Pickering. Many parents have questions about how details on confirmed cases in schools will be communi- cated. Here's a quick guide to what information will be shared, what details are off limits, and where to find everything. NEW PROVINCIAL WEB PAGE The province has launched a new website to track confirmed COVID-19 cases in schools and day- cares. It will be updated every weekday at 10:30 a.m. and includes a list of schools with active cases, and whether the cases are in staff member or students. Data is cur- rent to the previous day. The web- site will list the number of schools that are closed, should that occur. There is also a section for con- firmed COVID-19 cases in licensed child care centres. SCHOOL BOARD ADVISORY WEB PAGES All school boards in Ontario have been asked to create a CO- VID-19 advisory section on their main website. School boards will list confirmed cases of COVID-19 and which school is affected. Some will also list any closures of clas- ses, cohorts or schools. Families that are affected by the confirmed case will be contacted by the heath department with specific instruc- tions for testing, self isolation or self monitoring. Here are the CO- VID-19 advisory web pages for the Durham District School Board, Durham Catholic District School Board, Kawartha Pine Ridge Dis- trict School Board and Peterbor- ough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic District School Board. WHAT IS CONSIDERED AN OUTBREAK IN A SCHOOL? The province says an outbreaks defined as "two or more lab-con- firmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff in a school with an ep- idemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school l (in- cluding transportation and before or after school care)." The health department is re- sponsible for declaring an out- break in a school and determining what measures should be taken to manage it. This could include clos- ing classrooms, cohorts or an en- tire school. INFORMATION THAT WILL NOT BE SHARED School boards will not be shar- ing information about: suspected cases of COVID-19; students who go home sick from school; stu- dents and staff who are self-isolat- ing because of travel or a possible exposure; any specific informa- tion that could identify an individ- ual. School boards will not com- ment on whether an individual student or staff member has a con- firmed case, a suspected case or is isolating.
