"Both are extremely ex- cited to be going back to school and honestly, so am I," mom Elisabeth Cook said via e-mail. "I am cau- tiously optimistic about the school year." Across Durham, many children and teachers are heading back to school in the ongoing COVID-19 pan- demic. In her 16 years teaching at R.S. McLaughlin CVI in Oshawa, Melissa Wadding- ton says this year is unlike anything she has had to contend with before. "I would say more than a little nervous. There are so many unknowns. As fast as we hear one update, there's an update that changes that update," she says. Teachers are normally allowed access to their classrooms a couple of weeks before the start of the school year — this year, Waddington wasn't allowed in until Sept. 1. "For a lot of teachers, that's very stressful. Not being able to get in and start getting ready. Some people still have bulletin boards up from March," she says. For many families, this is the first time in months that kids will be away from their parents. The Smiles boys haven't been apart from their mother since March. "My boys need their friends, their teachers and the routine of school to manifest the mental assur- ance of 'normalcy.' I can only hope I'm making the right decision," said Cook. Waddington says she is taking care of her own mental health by spending time with friends and fam- ily in her bubble, staying up to date as new informa- tion about schools is re- leased and trying to avoid getting caught up in the onslaught of education posts on social media. "I'm talking to col- leagues about what we're going to do to focus on our students and keep them safe. Student safety is our paramount worry," she says. "Talking about it and being proactive helps. So does realizing this is going to be a fluid situation." Prep for success: 1. If kids don't want to go back, have an open conver- sation about their con- cerns and what is making them anxious. "Give them space to share some of their wor- ries — and know that those worries are probably not going to go away over- night," said Alec King, from the Canadian Mental Health Association Dur- ham, via e-mail. Remind them of their goals, things they're looking forward to, like seeing friends and teach- ers again. 2. Some students really struggled with the lock- down and are excited to get back to school, explained Dr. Nadia D'luso from On- tario Shores Centre for Mental Health. "The routines and structures of being back at school are so protective for mental health," said D'lu- so. 3. Focus on what can be controlled — arm kids with all the precautions they need. If there are con- cerns, connect with the school to problem-solve. Remember, feeling stressed about sending kids back to school right now is normal. First-time homeschool- er Marjan Alpial is a mom of two whose family re- cently moved to Durham for her husband's job. Her plan had been to register her two sons, ages five and seven, with their local school board this summer —but then she saw the plans for regular class siz- es for in-class learning, and hours of synchronous learning for the remote op- tion. "I really didn't feel com- fortable with either of the options," she says. She has settled on ho- meschooling, but it wasn't an easy decision. Alpial, a stay-at-home-parent, says she is "very stressed," about how to plan. "It's not something I re- ally pictured myself do- ing... I am not a teacher. But I don't know what else we can do." Many families across Durham Region have de- cided to teach their chil- dren at home this year. Back-to-school also means booting up for Pick- ering mom Shannon Bel- more, who has decided to keep her two boys — six and eight years old — home this September due to the pandemic. "We have just today made the very difficult de- cision, undoubtedly the hardest one yet as parents, to keep our kids home do- ing virtual learning next year, even though we real- ly don't fully know what that will look like," she said via e-mail. "I am very concerned about the pros- pect of them having to sit for several hours at a time in front of a computer and how I will actually manage to convince a six-year-old to do that without daily fights." Both mothers said they worry their children will struggle academically and socially. "Now, not only are they not socializing with friends, but when they do eventually return to in- class learning, I fear they will feel like outsiders," said Belmore. Prep for success: 1. Set up a learning space outside the bedroom —even if it's the smallest corner of the kitchen, be- cause teens and kids asso- ciate their bedrooms with rest and as their only pri- vate space. "I've encouraged kids to decorate their little school space. Make it somewhere they look forward to going to. Make it a little exciting. Make it a little bit special. This is Angela's desk," said D'luso. 2. Have a routine — a wake-up time, a bit of ac- tivity they enjoy, first peri- od, second period, lunch. Limit phone access to whatever the rules are in school. Before the end of the day, set everything up for the next day. 3. Organize safe ways for kids to connect with friends — whether it's vir- tual or distanced in-per- son play. Isolation from peers can affect mental health. "Try to find support from people who are doing the same thing. Online groups can provide tips and ideas and emotional support from people who are dealing with similar is- sues," said King. –With files from Jillian Follert. EACH!!LBS3 EASILY SERVES 10 PEOPLE An Ajax man who built handguns and an assault rifle with imported parts has been sentenced to four years in prison by a judge who described the circumstances of the case as "terrifying." The fact that Quintin Cook, who was not licensed to possess firearms, was able to build his own guns with parts he had shipped to him is of grave concern in a com- munity already troubled by gun violence, Ontario Court Justice Peter West said in a decision released Aug. 28. "In my view, the fact that someone could manufacture working restricted firearms in their home is both terrifying and shock- ing," West wrote. Cook, now 25, pleaded guilty in January to five firearms-related offences. Court heard that Durham police, responding to a report Cook had produced a gun during a dispute, arrested him at his Lawrie Road home in Sept. 2018. An officer approaching the house saw a handgun, which turned out to be a loaded 9-mm Glock, on the floor of Cook's unlocked car. Inside the house, police seized other guns —a 40-calibre handgun and an AR-15 assault rifle, fully loaded and readily accessible, court heard. Police also seized hundreds of rounds of ammunition. An investigation revealed that not only did Cook fail to legally obtain the guns, he also built them himself — buying polymer frames and the necessary parts to com- plete them, the court heard. Cook also made the rounds of ammunition found in the house. West noted that at the time of the offences that Cook, a high school dropout who inher- ited a house and a substantial amount of money following the death of his grand- mother, was struggling with grief over the death and paranoia that was fuelled by oth- ers pressing him to give them money. "Mr. Cook became paranoid about pro- tecting the estate, and he became with- drawn and reclusive," the judge noted. The judge agreed with prosecutor Ngai On Young's recommendation of a four-year penitentiary term, noting the sentence would have been more stringent were it not for the fact Cook is a youthful, first-time of- fender with no prior criminal record and positive prospects for rehabilitation. "The underlying circumstances of these offences put Mr. Cook's conduct at the end of the spectrum of 'true crimes' and reflect a high level of moral blameworthiness on Mr. Cook's part," West wrote. "The only reason his sentence is not higher is be- cause of the sentencing principles of reha- bilitation and restraint given Mr. Cook is a youthful first offender." A Pickering Facebook group is helping out a local food bank by putting the photos posted to the page to good use. The photos will be printed in a high-quality calendar, starting this month, to raise funds for St. Paul's On-the-Hill Com- munity Food Bank in Pick- ering, and to celebrate the city's beauty, showcase am- ateur photographers and give exposure to local busi- nesses. "It's been nice to see lots of businesses and different individuals to come togeth- er supporting the calen- dar," said Emma Roberts, administrator of the Bay Ridges Pickering Facebook group. She started up the page when she moved to Picker- ing in 2017, in order to cre- ate a sense of community. It has grown to more than 3,000 members and Roberts has noticed amateur pho- tographers in the group posting beautiful photos on their daily excursions around the neighbour- hood. "They share photos of their life in Pickering, their experiences in Pickering. And there are some amaz- ing ones," she said. "I thought, 'Wow, there are some really talented pho- tographers here.'" So, she thought, why not do something good with them? Roberts put a call out to members for a brainstorm- ing session and created a small steering committee. "All of a sudden, we found ourselves making a calendar and it just kind of grew from there," she said. Around 60 people sub- mitted 200 different images for the 16-month calendar. It was hard to choose which photos would be featured. "There were just some amazing photos. A lot of wildlife," Roberts said. "And the lake and a few photos of people." Working in the non- profit sector herself, she wanted to support a local not-for-profit organiza- tion, eventually choosing the food bank. "I see a lot of need for that right now," she said. "For me, personally, it's an important resource in the community." St. Paul's serves both Pickering and Ajax resi- dents. And the number of families using the food bank has gone up by 14 per cent over last year. "We're busy, we're differ- ent," said director Marg Jocz. Things have changed physically. Volunteers meet the clients at the door on the days they come to pick up their items. And they come in to stock the shelves at staggered times. "We're still meeting the needs," she said. "We haven't closed our door for one day." So far in 2020, the food bank has fed more than 4,200 adults and nearly 3,000 children. In the entire year of 2019, the food bank fed roughly 3,500 adults and not quite 2,500 children. Jocz said a lot of the peo- ple using the food bank have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, and noted many clients have large families, with four or five children. And, as government fund- ing for COVID-19 tapers off, she thinks there will be even more need. "Come the fall, I think we'll see another change in our clients," she said. "There is going to be people in need, I know that." Jocz said four communi- ty gardens donate to the food bank so clients can get fresh vegetables. "We take a table outside and I look like a farmers' market," she said. Jocz said it's thanks to the community, and people doing initiatives like this one. "Generosity comes in many different shapes and sizes and forms," she said. The Bay Ridges group reached out to local busi- nesses for sponsorship. "We wanted to give local business an opportunity to get their business brand- ing out there at a low in- vestment," Roberts said. The City of Pickering is also a partner. "The City of Pickering is proud to partner on this wonderful community cal- endar project in support of St. Paul's on the Hill Food Bank," said Mayor Dave Ryan. "The commitment and determination of one neighbourhood group can have a ripple effect throughout the entire com- munity, and make a mean- ingful difference for those who rely on these much- needed services." Calendars are $16 each and the group has already raised $2,000 through pre- sales and sponsorship. "My goal personally is to double that," Roberts said. "I think we can do that." The calendar runs from September 2020 to Decem- ber 2021. Jocz said the shelves are low but it's due to a lack of food drives due to CO- VID-19 restrictions. "Food drives really stocked you up and gave you food long-term," she said. "The shopping is now up to us. We're able to get what we need when we need it which is good as well." She said there has been a great donation response to the food bank through- out the pandemic. "The community really, really stepped up," she said. Zion Leatham, 21, was leading a City of Pickering youth camp at Beachfront Park in late August when he saw a man was in dis- tress. The father of two went into the lake attempting to retrieve a flotation device. "The man was probably about 40 metres out," Leatham said. A former lifeguard with the city, he saw the man's companion had tried to res- cue him. But after she strugged herself, Leatham swam out to help. "I told her it's not safe for her," Leatham said. He knows how danger- ous it can be to help some- one in distress in open wa- ter, especially when they're not trained to do so. He ended up towing them both to shore. "It was a trek to get the man and obviously to bring them both back treading water," Leatham said. He credits adrenaline for helping him in the mo- ment. "If this was an actual lifeguard test I probably would have been more ex- hausted," he said. In his past working as a lifeguard he never had to save anyone. Leatham wasn't looking for recognition for his act. "At the end of the day I'm more relieved at the fact that the guy is OK," he said. This City of Pickering, in an Instagram post recog- nizing Leatham for his ef- forts, said the incident il- lustrates just how critical water safety is. It suggests paying attention to signage and safety equipment at the waterfront and to note that the area is unsuper- vised. Last summer an Osha- wa woman drowned in the same area when she tried to help her son. "You can't tell water to stop," Leatham said. "Wa- ter isn't always your friend. Water wants to do what it wants." Leatham said some- thing that costs around $50 to $100 such as a flotation device isn't worth risking one's life. "Your life cannot be bought again, right?" he said. He said water can be de- ceiving; it can seem calm and suddenly get choppy in an instant. "Understand water safe- ty, your environment and your strength and don't push yourself," he said. Mayor Dave Ryan and members of council praised Leatham for his bravery and kindness. He received a certificate of ap- preciation for his efforts. Leatham is studying neuroscience at the Uni- versity of Guelph. Zion Leatham, 21, is being hailed as a local hero after saving a man from drowning in Lake Ontario in Pickering. These days, just about every type of food can be found on the shelves of a grocery store. Because of this, we can eat strawberries in December and all sorts of other fresh products which are grown far from where we live. But when we have a choice between two prod- ucts, why not think local? Indeed, buying local products helps to reduce the level of greenhouse gases found in the atmosphere. At the same time, you can re- duce your consumption of preservatives that products travelling long distances usually contain. And don’t forget the positive impact buying local can have on your local economy! But buying local doesn’t have to be limited to fresh produce. It can also include clothing, books, toys, jewel- lery, handicrafts and many other items we use in our daily lives. Checking the labels of the products you put in your shopping cart for their place of origin can make all the difference! And deciding to shop at the hard- ware store near you rather than in a big-box store will allow you to economize both time and gas... When we invest in our local economy, we also help the local job market, an im- portant factor when buying local. In the end, it’s the entire region which profits from our decision. We should never underestimate our buying power as, by modi- fying our consumption hab- its, we can help the environ- ment as well as the economy in our own small way 13 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 2 0 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Thank you for nominating John Boddy Homes “BEST NEW HOME BUILDER” 24 Years in a row. However, these bustling spaces offer an abundance of other regional goods. Here’s a sampling of what you might find. Ornamental plants Bring your backyard to life or add a pop of colour to your garden with a wide selection of flowers, plants and shrubs. Ask growers on site about the best choices for your shaded, sunny or damp yard. Organic goods While it can sometimes be a challenge to find fresh organic produce in grocery stores, there’s no shortage of it at farmers markets. Many small-scale cultivators and breeders specialize in organ- ic farming practices. Take your pick from organic fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, eggs and more. Craft beer, wine and spirits Little pairs better with a locally sourced meal than a glass of wine, cider or craft beer that was made just down the road. Discover the flavours of your region at the stalls of local producers. If you fancy an aperitif or di- gestif, sample the offerings of a nearby microdistillery. Artisanal goods Farmers markets aren’t just about eating and drink- ing. Among the tables laden with food you’ll find an array of unique creations. These often handcrafted products range from soaps, creams and essential oils to candles, clothes and linens. For these local products and more, take a stroll through a farmers market near you. –Newspaper Toolbox Farmers markets: the best place for locally sourced goods dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 2 0 | 16 IT’S VOTING TIME! Local Food Plus, Canada’s local sustainable food system organization, asserts that 100,000 people are eating “certified local sustainable” food every day —that means they are eating food grown within their prov- ince and not trucked or flown in from faraway places. If you’d like to have your own local food experience, a drive to the country and a visit to a local producers’ market is a great idea for a crisp fall day. Wine, cheese, apples, cider, farm-fresh eggs, and locally raised natural meat can all be bought when one is in the know about where to find them. If you would like to plug in to the network of local pro- ducers in your area, the best place to go for information is to a local food producers’ association. Or, once on site, you could go to the local tourism office or natural food store. These people will be able to tell you where to get the buttery, mild goat cheese you’ve been craving, or the season’s freshest pressing of apple cider. Ask, too, about butchers who work locally, as well as jam-makers, micro- breweries, organic vegetable growers, and livestock farm- ers. If you can’t get to the country, take heart; more and more mainstream restaurants are beginning to feature menu items made from local products. The trendiest plac- es make a splash of highlight- ing their dishes made with local cheeses, meats, wines, and fresh produce — they sometimes even name the dish after the farm that pro- duced its main ingredients dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 2 0 | 20 18 80 Glengrove Road, Pickering, ON (905) 831 - 2088 | vivalife.ca INDEPENDENT LIVING | ASSISTED LIVING | RESPITE D urham’s premier retirement community. The 3,000 square foot Wizards Emporium is op- erated by York Durham Heritage Railway. Moving into retail has been nothing short of mag- ical for the local organiza- tion, helping to pull the railway out of a financial slump brought on by the pandemic. "It has changed every- thing for us," says CEO John Perks. Back in the spring, the railway was on the verge of bankruptcy after being forced to close and lay off its entire staff. At that time, a lot of money had already been spent on licensing agree- ments and merchandise for upcoming events — Perks had the idea to make a quick pivot into "experien- tial retail." Wizards Emporium is stocked with everything a devoted Harry Potter fan could want. From clothing and ac- cessories from the four Hogwarts houses, to candy, wands, goblets, board games and movie replicas like Hagrid's pink umbrel- la. There's even a spot to take your photo on the famed Platform 9 3/4. "It has been just amazing," Perks says of the response so far. "We have people waiting outside before the mall opens. As fast as we're put- ting stuff on the shelves, peo- ple are buying it." The stock of 1,000 wands he thought would last until Christmas was gone in one day, while 1,000 chocolate frogs sold in less than a week. Customers are coming from as far away as Thun- der Bay and Quebec. Wizards Emporium will soon be the only store in Canada licensed to sell a special line of Hogwarts school clothing made in Scotland. The only other place it is available at is Universal Studios. Perks says there are plans to add an addition to the store to create a potions classroom. The York Durham Heri- tage Railway is hosting its annual Wizards Festival and Hallows Express Train ride from Oct. 2 to 4 in Ux- bridge. The event, which will have reduced capacity this year, includes interactive classes, magic shows, a sorting hat ceremony, for- tune tellers, magical ven- dors — and even a Quid- ditch tournament. "Right now, more than ever before, the railway needs support," Perks says. Susie Kockerscheidt/Torstar — News Canada Prep your home for fall with tips from the experts Over the course of the pan- demic, home has become our sanctuary, office and play- ground. And after a spring and summer of heavy use, autumn is a great time to tackle mainte- nance projects that can help you save money, reduce ener- gy costs and prevent damage to your property during the winter. Whether you’re a new homeowner or are just looking for basic tips, here’s a fall home maintenance checklist to get you started: Prevent water damage : Check the condition of your underground water pipes. If you have a yard full of trees or have noticed a reduction in wa- ter pressure, this could be a sign that your pipes are blocked, filled with roots from trees or possibly deteriorating. Shut off the water supply to your outdoor water faucets. And don't forget to put away the outdoor hose before the temperature falls below zero. Clean eavestroughs and drains and make sure they are not blocked by leaves or other debris. Check key problem areas for heat loss : Windowpanes, door seals and thresholds wear down or deteriorate over time. When there is air creep- ing through the windows and doors, it can create damage as well as drive up your energy bill. Adding a little interior insu- lation can help keep you warm. If you feel air coming in through electrical outlets, consider in- sulating them. It costs only a few dollars and will make a big difference in how your house is conserving heat and could lower bills. Check your roof : Make sure there are no loose shingles or areas that need repair. Look for overhanging tree branches that could fall in a storm. Smoke and carbon monox- ide:Check batteries to make sure that you’re safe in the event of a fire or gas leak. Hav- ing the right insurance is es- sential in case something goes wrong. A fire in north Ajax that destroyed one home and damaged others was final- ly under control at around 8 p.m. on Aug. 31, and no in- juries were reported. The fire started in one house on Buggey Lane and spread to four other due to windy conditions. A neighbour called 911 to report a nearby home was on fire. The call came in at around 2 p.m. Nobody was home when the fire started. Rachael Wraith, a Town of Ajax spokesperson, said crews from both Pickering and Whitby were on the scene to help Ajax fire- fighters fight the blaze. One command vehicle, 10 pumper vehicles and one aerial truck were on site. Durham Regional Po- lice Services and Emergen- cy Medical Services were both on the scene to pro- vide assistance. Pickering resident John Meloche captured video of the scene with his phone. "I was coming from the 401 and I saw it," he said. "As soon as I got off the highway I saw this smoke." At first, he thought trees were on fire, but when he got closer, he saw a home was up in flames. "II was definitely huge," he said of the home. "It was at least 4,000 square feet. It was massive. It appeared to be under construction." Even the garage was in flames, and in his video, he showed a car parked in the driveway that was begin- ning to smoke. "It was definitely the biggest fire I have ever seen with my own eyes," Me- loche said. Neighbours were out- side, fearing their houses would catch fire next. "They were panicking," recalled Meloche. He noticed the house next door had smoke and embers on the roof. "Then all of a sudden be- hind me I hear, 'Hey this one is on fire.' It was actu- ally pretty far from there house where the original fire was," Meloche said. "There were embers go- ing so high in the air. There were huge pieces of wood that were coming down. I actually got hit with one on my shirt. It hit me. It wasn't ashes. It was embers." The cause of fire is un- determined at this time and will be investigated by the Ontario Fire Mar- shal's office. The estimat- ed cost of the damage is unknown. The established street is lined with large homes. One 6,000 square-foot home is currently listed for sale for $3 million.
