DURHAMREGION.COM/ HIGHWAYPIRATES DURHAM — A pandemic af- fects everything, including prep- arations for the fall and winter sports seasons. Parents are usually busy this time of year preparing their kids for the hockey or ringette season. Some still are, even if the leagues that run the programs are trying to figure out what's going to hap- pen. Evan Jones, president of the Durham West Girls' Hockey As- sociation, said it will be different. "It will be evolving throughout the year. It's going to start off with skills and drills, and then it will evolve slowly to four-on-four hockey with the remote chance of hitting five-on-five," Jones noted. It's the same with the Picker- ing Hockey Association. Leo Nat, executive director and general manager, said there's no rep hockey this year and the group is looking at a tiered house league program. Rep players would be in Tier One, select in Tier Two and house league would be Tier Three. "We can run quite a robust AJAX, PICKERING LEAGUES PREP FOR SPORTS SEASONS See ‘WE’RE’, page 6 KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com Ajax-Pickering Ringette is 'cautiously optimistic' about a return to play this fall. For us, it looks quite good and could be a lot of fun," Nat added. Whatever the season looks like, both Jones and Nat say people want to play. The groups did a sur- vey of members and found 95 per cent or more would be returning. Jones expects to get close to 600 players regis- tered, as in a normal year. "We did a survey in June of our registrants and we have about 750 members," Nat said. "Four hundred responded and over- whelmingly, 95 to 96 per cent responded favourably and wanted to return.... That kind of shocked us that it was that high." Getting back to "normal hockey" won't happen right away, he added. "From that, 90 per cent would play some form of hockey they were not used to, like a four-on-four," Nat said. The association isn't al- lowed to collect any regis- tration fee money before September, although it can open registration to see how many want to play. "We'll have a better idea of how much ice we'll have," Nat added. The association has been receiving a lot of calls about the hockey start, he said. "We are hopeful. I think it's going to be a tough year with the costs and every- thing. We're going to have to pay close attention to the association and how the as- sociation works and we don't take a huge financial loss. We have good re- serves, but we don't want to dip into those too much" Nat added. Tom Anderson, presi- dent for the Ajax side of Ajax-Pickering Ringette, said there's been dialogue with the provincial associ- ation and other Ontario as- sociations about restarting plans. "We're getting good guidance on what the pub- lic health plan regulations are. We're building plans on a safe return to the sport. We're making sure we're going to have a ro- bust communication plan," Anderson said. "We're hop- ing for a different return, but a safe return in Sep- tember." The association has opened up registration and is asking for a deposit. "Once we understand how much ice is available, how many people we can put on the ice at a particu- lar time, we can start to chart out a program and how much it will cost," he said. "For the first few months anyway, it's going to be skills and drills." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: It's Canada and fall and winter are ap- proaching. That means the hockey and ringette sea- sons are just around the corner. Given that we're in the middle of a pandemic, returning to play will be have to be different. We asked some associations how they are preparing for a very different season. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM That mournful wail. That crazy laughter. For a while I was afraid the only loon calls most people would hear this summer would be in cottage coun- try traffic reports on the radio. Those brief loon sound bites always grab my attention and my heart. But Phase 3 covid open- ing means some of us, at least, can get out of the city into the wilds up north, where the air smells of pine needles bak- ing in the sun -- so sweet! -- and of lake water. And if you're lucky you can hear those far-carrying voices crying out in the night, and sometimes by day. In- sistent, haunting, evoca- tive. What would summer be like without hearing common loons, Ontario's provincial bird? I haven't made it to any loon lakes yet, so have been living vicariously, hearing from friends who have. Joan Ellis reported a pair of loons near her cot- tage on the Madawaska River. Lois Gillette of Osh- awa and Phill Holder of Newcastle heard them along the Lake Ontario shore. Warren Brailsford had one surface beside his canoe one misty morning on Arrowhead Lake near Huntsville -- and call plaintively. Unforgetta- ble! Common loons can live for 30 years and often mate for life. Pairs are most vo- cal while defending terri- tory during courtship in early summer. Superbly designed for swimming, with their feet far back for paddling, they're subse- quently hopeless on land, so nest right at water's edge on a mat of sticks and reeds. Mates take turns in- cubating their two eggs for up to 30 days, then in- stantly start serving min- nows, leeches and aquatic insects to fluffy grey chicks that can swim mere minutes after hatching. If human infants can hear music while in utero, surely loon chicks have the whole rich repertoire of their parents imprinted in their nervous system from day one. The territo- rial yodel of their dad. The back-and-forth tremolo of their parents talking. And that eerie far-off wail that says, "I'm here, my dear. Where are you?" Though they can dive in a day or two, it's 10 or 11 weeks before the young can fly. Loon families stay together and in touch by call into fall, with adults leaving for their coastal waters' wintering range before their young are ready for such a long flight. And they're pretty much silent till spring. Four other species of loons breed in Canada -- Pacific, red-throated, Arc- tic and yellow-billed, all with unique cries and calls. None are as beauti- ful and haunting as our common loon, and you'd have to travel to the ends of the earth, just about, to hear them. Nature queries: mcar- ney@interlinks.net or 905-725-2116. –Durham nature writ- er Margaret Carney has more than 4,000 species on her life list of birds, many seen in far-flung corners of our beautiful planet. THE SONG OF SUMMER ON A COTTAGE-COUNTRY LAKE MARGARET CARNEY ON THE BELOVED BIRD WITH THE 'UNFORGETTABLE' CALL MARGARET CARNEY Column LETTERS & COMMENTARY TAXPAYERS SHOULDN’T PAY FOR SCHOOL PPE To the editor: Both my husband and I were utterly appalled to read that the cost for PPE in Durham schools is ex- pected to be borne by the school boards. These costs will un- doubtedly be passed on to the Durham ratepayers, a group to which we belong. These total costs are astro- nomical. However, when carved up per child, they are minimal, so why bur- den us with that cost? We are in our late 70s and 80s and our great- grandchildren are now at- tending school (in various municipalities), yet we are still required to pay school taxes. Why is it that all costs pertaining to school programs and/or activities are automatically expected to be paid by the public? Why can the parents not pay for the necessary PPE for their own children and the teachers also pay for their own protection? We have all been affect- ed by COVID-19 and our day-to-day costs have in- creased, but we have to keep a stiff upper lip and carry on regardless. Don't forget, these chil- dren are your children and you are responsible for them. JOHN AND ROSEMARIE BRUGOS WHITBY PICKERING AIRPORT IS NOT FEASIBLE To the editor: Re: Pickering Airport Lands. There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. If there was a case for an air- port in Pickering the time for that idea has come and gone. We don't yet know which impacts of the present pan- demic will be permanent and which will be tempo- rary. But it is very clear that demand for air travel has taken a major hit and previous growth projec- tions no longer have any validity. It is also clear that the value of prime agricul- tural land capable of pro- ducing high-quality local food has never been more precious. Reid Williamson of Pick- ering, a millennial, recent- ly expressed a similar opin- ion in this space. And as a boomer I heartily agree. No matter your age or genera- tion the non-feasibility of a Pickering Airport is clear. Many local politicians at various levels have ex- pressed unequivocal sup- port for the airport. It will be hard for them to public- ly change their minds. So it is up to ordinary citizens to use their voices and their votes to change their minds. When facts change minds change. It's time to move on. One new Durham speed camera clocked a driver traveling more than 136 km over the limit, and over a 40-day stretch another camera captured more than 100,000 vehicles driv- ing too fast. Durham's new automat- ed speed enforcement cam- eras were turned on in some school zones and des- ignated community safety zones on regional roads on Monday, June 1. Fines are not yet being issued, how- ever the cameras have al- ready started to collect da- ta on some roadways. The early data is enforc- ing the need for safety equipment to modify ag- gressive driving behaviour and create safer roadways, according to a statement from the Region of Dur- ham. Over 40 days, one cam- era captured more than 100,000 vehicles traveling above the posted speed lim- it in a community safety zone on Simcoe Street in Oshawa. About one third of those drivers were travel- ing in peak traffic times. "Although an extreme outlier, the top speed cap- tured on Bayly Street was 196 km per hour — 136 km over the speed limit — that is a blatant disregard for human life," Durham's Di- rector of Transportation and Field Services Ramesh Jagannathan said in the statement. The new automated speed enforcement and red-light cameras are part of Durham Vision Zero's goal to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on the roadways. Speed is a con- tributing factor in roughly on-third of fatal collisions. Reducing traffic speeds is the best way to reduce both the frequency and severity of collisions in the commu- nity , according to the re- gion, and automated speed enforcement has proven to be an effective way to get drivers to slow down. "The data collected so far indicates how this tech- nology will play a signifi- cant role in creating safer roads for drivers, pedestri- ans and cyclists. The goal of Automated Speed En- forcement and Red Light Cameras, two Durham Vi- sion Zero initiatives, is not only to correct aggressive driving behaviours, but it is part of a long-term plan to ensure a safe transporta- tion system that sees no lives lost or serious inju- ries on Durham roads," added Jagannathan. Twelve red-light cam- eras and four automated speed enforcement cam- eras are being installed on Durham roadways this year, with plans for addi- tional camera locations in the future. The cameras are expec- ted to be fully operational — meaning issuing fines to the registered owner of the vehicle — by the end of Au- gust through to early Sep- tember, just in time for back-to-school safety on the roads. "It is easy to avoid get- ting a fine, simply follow the law and drive safe," said Jagannathan. NEW SPEED CAMERA CLOCKS 100,000 SPEEDERS IN 40 DAYS Red-light cameras and automated speed enforcement or photo radar are in Durham and are expected to be fully operational by the end of August or early September. To provide a glimpse into the matter, the Pickering Museum Village is joining forces with local breweries to present the Temper- ance and Temptation self-guided driving tour. The tour covers the inside scoop on the region's past, providing those who take part the chance to hear how pressure mounted until the Bluenoses who supported Temper- ance openly clashed with the bootleggers and moonshiners who defied the movement nightly. The tour is being held to promote busi- nesses in South Durham as part of a regional tourism initiative encouraging people to ex- plore their backyard and support local busi- nesses. Stops on the tour include Pickering Museum Village, Falcon Brewing Company, The Brock Street Brewing Company, and Town Brewery. The driving tour is self-guid- ed and includes safe-distancing practices. A podcast about Durham's scandalous past can be downloaded or streamed for driving tours through the region. Visit tem- peranceandtemptation.ca for driving routes, podcasts and information about each stop along the way. Every Thursday and Friday night at the museum, stories of Pickering's more scan- dalous past, especially in the museum's tem- perance hotel, are featured in the haunted ghost drive-thru tour. The tour runs to the end of October. The haunted ghost tour is the perfect way to end a visit to South Durham as part of the War on Whisky driving experience. For tick- ets to the haunted ghost drive-thru tour, call 905-683-8401 or visit pickeringmuseumvilla- ge.ca. For more information visit pickeringmu- seumvillage.ca. Pickering Museum Village is located just off Hwy. 7, three kilometres east of Brock Road in the Village of Green- wood. To help promote tourism in Durham, the Pickering Museum Village is partnering with several local breweries in the self-guiding driving tour Temperance and Temptation. The tour provides insight on the scandalous past of the area. The program was creat- ed to support emerging Ca- nadian musicians and re- cording artists affected by the pandemic. Perfor- mances have been held since June and about 100 artists have participated. Ridge plays on Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. Each perfor- mance runs for about 30 minutes. Ridge is a prolific musi- cian, using his musical knowledge and a love for storytelling to create an experience that's both unique and very familiar. He's known for his relaxed energy, and his clever, catchy songs. Ridge is an artist signed under 10K Hybrid Media, where he's released an al- bum titled "Love, in Mo- ments" and an EP titled "Cinq." The partnership will re- store and improve proper- ties by planting native trees and shrubs. Residential, multi-unit, or commercial property owners located in Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby and Scugog can apply to the subsidized Backyard Tree Planting Program offered by LEAF (Local Enhance- ment and Appreciation of Forests). It is expanding on the success of the program offered in Ajax since 2015. LEAF is committed to protecting and improving urban forests through planting, education and training. It helps property owners choose and plant the right trees, while offer- ing resources to ensure proper their long-term care. Through the full ser- vice program, property owners receive a consulta- tion with a certified arbor- ist, a 1.5 to 2.4-metre tall tree and full planting ser- vice, for $150 to $220 per tree. The program is subsi- dized by the Region of Dur- ham and participating mu- nicipalities. Arborist con- sultations will take place over the summer, with modified procedures to comply with physical dis- tancing. Planting will oc- cur in the fall.
