DURHAMREGION.COM/ BEHINDTHECRIMES PICKERING — After months of staying close to home, Picker- ing residents can start venturing out again, visiting playgrounds, their favourite restaurants and even breaking a sweat. As Stage 3 takes shape, more businesses and public spaces are opening up. Both visitors and op- erators of the establishments are expected to follow strict health and safety guidelines to keep ev- eryone safe. After four months, Chuuk in Pickering is seating customers inside once again. "In all honesty, it will be a wel- come sight to see people back in- side," said co-owner Don Argiro, the day before Stage 3 began. "Our industry has been beaten up by this." The restaurant is on Liverpool Road where Massey's, which was owned by the same family, used to be. The physical distancing mea- sures that are now in place will mean fewer people can dine in- side the restaurant. "Right now we're going to seat between 40 and 50 inside because everything is spaced to the six- foot or the two-metre rule," said Argiro. Chuuk is making health and safety a priority. On top of appropriate table spacing, there is appropri- ate signage, plenty of hand sanitizer and staff is wear- ing face masks. Chuuk is taking reser- vations by phone at 365-300- 5700. Gyms are also able to open up to people in Stage 3. CrossFit Pickering is al- ready finding its groove with new health and safety guidelines in place. It, too, was closed for almost four months before being able to welcome members back. Owner and principal coach Marta Blaze started scheduling Zoom classes online in order to survive the pandemic and keep members active and en- gaged. The Zoom classes continue, but around 30 per cent of members are back in the facility. "Our people are about nine feet apart from each other," Blaze said. Everyone's temperature is taken as they enter. Na- noSeptic strips that disin- fect the front door for 90 days have been installed, and members cannot enter the change room. Patrons wear masks inside and can take them off before they work out. Everyone disin- fects their equipment. "It's working really well so far," Blaze said. "It's just very different." Classes are now limited and have been slightly shortened to avoid overlap- ping. "I feel confident that we're doing everything we can to keep people safe," Blaze said. The City Pickering is opening a number of facil- ities, including city hall, the recreation complex and playground structures. "The City of Pickering continues with the gradu- al, safe, and measured re- opening of municipal facil- ities and restart of City ser- vices and programs," said Deputy Mayor Kevin Ashe. "It is critical that we all do our part, and continue to respect public health direc- tives." The city encourages res- idents to contact staff be- fore visiting city hall to see if the service request can be completed online or over the phone. Call 905- 683-7575, email customer- care@pickering.ca, or use live chat at pickering.ca/ LiveChat. Select services will con- tinue to be offered by ap- pointment. Visit picker- ing.ca/COVID19 for a de- tailed list. Staff continue to pre- pare for the reopening of facility amenities at Chest- nut Hill Developments Rec- reation Complex. The gym will open Aug. 4 for preregistered 75-min- ute time slots. Members can book their reservation up to seven days in ad- vance, and non-members can book one day in ad- vance. A dedicated health club space will be available for those 55 years of age and older. The hours of operation have been reduced to allow for deep cleaning (6 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends). In-person fitness clas- ses, indoor racquetball, squash and tennis, indoor swimming pools, and are- nas are not yet available. Notice of Study Commencement and Virtual Open House Proposed Ajax Reinforcement Project Project Overview Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas) has identified the need to reinforce part of its natural gas distribution network in the Town of Ajax, Ontario. The reinforcement is required to increase system reliability and flexibility and to support current and projected growth in natural gas demand in the area. The project will require the construction of a 6-inch high pressure steel natural gas pipeline, an 8-inch intermediate pressure polyethylene natural gas pipeline, and two district regulation stations. The pipeline will be up to 2.5 km and will be located within existing road allowances where possible. Three routes are being considered for the project. These include a preliminary preferred route (PPR) and two alternative routes (AR), which are depicted on the adjacent map. The PPR begins at the intersection of Taunton Road and Church Street North, travelling south to Rossland Road West, and then east along Rossland Road West to a point just east of the intersection with Harkins Drive. AR # 2 begins at the intersection of Brock Road and Rossland Road West and travels east to the same end point of the PPR on Rossland Road West. AR # 3 begins at the intersection of Taunton Road and Ravenscroft Road and travels south to the intersection of Ravenscroft Road and Rossland Road West. Environmental Study Enbridge Gas has retained Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder) to undertake an environmental study for the project. The study will examine the PPR and ARs to determine, from an environmental and socio-economic perspective, the preferred route for the project. An Environmental Report will be prepared in accordance with the Ontario Energy Board’s (OEB)Environmental Guidelines for the Location, Construction and Operation for Hydrocarbon Pipelines and Facilities in Ontario, Seventh Edition (2016).Upon completion, Enbridge Gas will file an application for a Leave to Construct with the OEB for approval. If approved, construction of the project is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2021. Virtual Open House Indigenous consultation and public engagement are fundamental components of the study. Input received from Indigenous communities and stakeholders will inform the study and identification of site-specific mitigation for the project. Due to the government restrictions on public gatherings as a result of COVID-19, Enbridge Gas will host a Virtual Open House to provide information about the project and to present an opportunity for interested stakeholders to ask questions and provide feedback. Details are as follows: Materials will be available for viewing on August 3, 2020 starting at 9:00 A.M. EST until August 17, 2020 at 5:00 P.M. EST at: www.ajaxreinforcement.ca We want to hear from you, and invite you to log on to the website to participate. Toronto police are crediting members of the community with providing informa- tion that led to arrests in the case, which focused on drug trafficking in the Regent Park neighbourhood. In addition to fenta- nyl, cocaine and crystal methamphet- amine, two loaded handguns were seized, police said. Facing drug and weapons charges is Rondell Solomon, 20, of Ajax. Also charged are Kal Tekolla, 23, George Legault, 23, 23- year-old Dawit Solomon and a 16-year-old male, all of Toronto. AJAX MAN AMONG SUSPECTS CAUGHT UP IN TORONTO DRUG INVESTIGATION NEWS AJAX - Police are investigating reports of women being groped by a stranger on a recreation trail in Ajax. Three women have now reported being touched inappropriately while walking or running on Miller's Creek Trail, Durham police said last week. The most recent in- cident occurred on July 16 when a 50-year- old woman reported being touched by a man as she used the trail just north of Ma- gill Drive and east of Westney Road. A suspect approached the woman from behind and then rode away on a bicycle, po- lice said. The incident is similar to two oth- er reports in the area at various times of the day. The suspect is a male aged 15 to 20 with a dark complexion and a medium build who has spiked black hair. He rode a dark-col- oured bicycle. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, extension 2529 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The awards, originally scheduled to take place in the spring, had been post- poned due to COVID-19. A virtual ceremony took place Friday, July 24. Tor- star's Durham Division consists of Clarington, Oshawa and Whitby This Week, the Ajax and Picker- ing News Advertiser, the Port Perry Star, the Ux- bridge Times-Journal, and the Brock Citizen. Reporter Jillian Follert won first place for Educa- tion Writing for her Osha- wa This Week article ex- ploring violence in Dur- ham classrooms. "Outstanding piece of reporting, rare in the small world of community jour- nalism and very much re- flecting Jillian Follert's deep knowledge of her sub- ject matter. Her ability to draw upon historical mo- tions before the board and indicate the context of what those led to, as well as a finely balanced look at parental angst and teach- ers/board constraints, re- sulted in a very fulsome package of information," wrote judge Carole Picard. Sabrina Byrnes won photographer of the year while fellow photographer Ryan Pfeiffer placed third in the same category. Pfeiffer also picked up an honourable mention for Best Sports Photo. The Ajax-Pickering News Advertiser placed third in general excellence among newspapers with a circulation of 45,000 read- ers or more. "While no one ever gets into this business to win awards, it's always nice to have the hard work of our journalists recognized," says managing editor Mike Lacey. "I'm proud to work with a dedicated, trusted and talented group of report- ers, photographers and ed- itors who are able to pro- vide daily and accurate coverage from across Dur- ham Region. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Rains the night before, then a wind shift north- west, flattened out the waves along the Lake Onta- rio shore -- best time to go canoeing on big water. My husband and I chose a route we hadn't paddled for two decades, Whitby to Courtice. With hat brims pulled low, the morning sun reflecting in our eyes, we headed east toward the nearest point, and then be- yond. As well as scenes of ero- sion, each bay, each head- land brought its own discov- eries. I was so glad to reach the bluffs below the base- ball diamonds at the Osha- wa border and find bank swallow nest holes pepper- ing a vein of sand in the cliff face, as they surely have for centuries. That's one aerial insectivore still present and accounted for, in these scary times of pesticide use! Some swallows were still coming and going, obvious- ly feeding babies just about ready to fledge. All told we passed four colonies en route to Bonnie Brae Point, each a highlight of an inter- esting day. The other birds that dig nest burrows in banks, belt- ed kingfishers, were also present, detected by their rattling calls. Paddling into the small creek just beyond the sports fields we startled one from its tree limb perch over the stream, and won- dered how it could possibly see to catch fish in the mud- dy waters churned up by the rains. Somehow they find enough to raise a fami- ly, for just east of Darlington Park we heard them -- adults teaching fledglings to dive for fish? It's always a joy to hear spotted sandpipers' clear "peet-weet!" call and watch them circle out from shore on fluttering wings. These tail-bobbing shorebirds nest on the ground beneath vegetation, not far from wa- ter, and we encountered four or five along the way. Another species dropping in number, but not consid- ered at risk. Unlike the critically en- dangered piping plover, four babies of which suc- cessfully hatched in mid- June on Darlington Beach, thanks to devoted parents, protective conservation laws and a network of bird- ing volunteers who for crit- ical weeks kept beach-goers from bothering them. We didn't see any precious plo- vers, or hear their piping calls, but passed the roped- off area where the nesting pair sat right out in the open on their eggs, above the reach of waves, perfectly camouflaged against the sand. By that time the forecast- ed tail wind was happening early, even shifting south- west, to leave us bobbing about in growing swells. So we powered on to our take- out point, Courtice Road South, and splashed onto the beach there, safe and well-satisfied. Nature queries: mcar- ney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. CANOEING DURHAM'S LAKE ONTARIO SHORELINE AT THE 'BEST TIME' COLUMNIST MARGARET CARNEY AND HUBBY BIRD-WATCHED FROM THE WATER MARGARET CARNEY Column MEDICAL CHAMPIONS ARE 'UNSUNG HEROES' To the editor: You are the unsung he- roes. You persevere through long hours, limited resources and difficult cir- cumstances. Yours often seems like a thankless oc- cupation, riddled by pain, tragedy and futility. You meet a myriad of illnesses, which require incredible wisdom to properly diag- nose, treat and monitor. Yours is the task of easing pain, regardless of the means required to do so ... often an insurmountable expectation. Because of your heroic endeavours, we may forget that you are not superhu- man, and that, despite your greatest efforts, you will in- evitably make mistakes. Forgive us when we fail to see that, although you will give more than should ever be asked of any mortal, you are, after all, human like us. Forgive us, when we for- get that you, too, have fami- lies who need your care. You too, hurt with unseen heartache. You too, bleed as we do and, at times, feel physical pain. While you may not have walked where we have walked, neither have we ambled in your shoes. Because you are just like us in many ways, per- haps that makes it easier for you to help those who entrust their care to yours. And so, with hearts of gratitude to God for gifting each of you with much- needed gifts, we would like to say a resounding "Thank You!" to surgeons, doctors, nurses, paramedics, aides, patient advisers, hospital and clinic support staff, clergy, volunteers, admin- istrators, custodians and to anyone else who plays a role in making our world a better place. You are not forgotten. Your hard work is noticed. Your kindnesses and smiles are greatly ap- preciated. Your sacrifices are remarkable. You truly are the un- sung heroes whose lives have the potential of im- pacting hurting patients and their families in a way that no other profession does. Hence, for the times when we fail to extend our thanks because the pain blurs our vision to every- thing else around us, please remember that you are sincerely valued. Only God can reward you for ev- erything that you give on a daily basis. He alone can bless you as you deserve. Thank you, unsung he- roes!
