"You've got peo- ple making out, used condoms and doobies on the ground." Wharf Street runs east and west and crosses Liverpool Road, just north of the waterfront busi- nesses. DURHAM — Regional Chairman John Henry an- nounced he will convene a virtual community town hall to discuss anti-Black racism in Durham. "Across the communi- ties that make up the Re- gion of Durham, we have been clear in our need to fight racism and discrimi- nation. We work hard to build a region that is wel- coming, but we know that embracing diversity and inclusion is not enough," Henry said in a statement. "We need to educate our- selves on the realities of an- ti-Black racism and ac- knowledge how we have failed, in the past, to ensure equity for Black residents." The town hall will dis- cuss how regional policies and programs can help ad- dress systemic anti-Black racism in the community. Residents are invited to share their experiences. The Region is consult- ing with the Durham Local Immigration Partnership and community partners in diversity about anti- Black racism, bias and dis- crimination. Internally, Region of Durham staff are develop- ing a corporate Anti-Black Racism Strategy and up- dating the equity strategy. The town hall will be held this summer, but the date has not yet been set. DURHAM REGIONAL CHAIR TO HOST ANTI-BLACK RACISM TOWN HALL JENNIFER O'MEARA jomeara@durhamregion.com 'RACISM, DISCRIMINATION AND MARGINALIZATION HAVE NO PLACE IN DURHAM REGION,' SAYS CHAIR HENRY parking and garbage that end up on the street during the summer season when everybody heads down to the beach. "As a young family, how do you go let your kid ride their bicycle down the street?" Gervais said. The problems irk resi- dents in the best of times, but concerns are higher this year due to COVID-19. "It also bothers me watching people walk up and down my street all day and night coughing and spitting on my lawn, even a person who vomited all the way down the street, what am I supposed to do?" he said in an email to Picker- ing council. "Our safety is now a concern because of this. I feel like Wharf Street East is the overflow parking for the city." He noted those who can't get a parking spot at the restaurant nearby tend to park on his street as well. Gervais, who owns Ger- vais Party and Tent Rent- als in Toronto, has noticed signs all over the city that are currently blocking parking on residential streets. "They have them almost everywhere," he said. "I'm like, look at this, they're taking this seriously." Gervais noted people are parking on both sides of the street and he worries about emergency vehicles being able access to an emergency situation. Last summer, a woman died after attempting to save her son who had drift- ed too far from shore. Ger- vais said emergency ser- vices couldn't get to the bottom of Liverpool Road because there were so many cars. He has seen some very recent improvements. He noticed bylaw officers en- forcing parking restric- tions on June 20, and later the following week, he found some 'no parking' signs had been installed on the court. He also heard that the city is installing a 'local parking only' sign. Deputy Mayor Kevin Ashe said the city is aware of the overwhelming re- sponse to the beach open- ing up in Pickering, and noted it's especially busy now that most others are still closed. "We're in the process of doing a couple things," he said. By-law officers have not been enforcing parking by- laws due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforce- ment of provincial orders, but that's recently changed. "We just hired four new bylaw officers so we've gone from eight to 12," Ashe said. Ward 2 regional coun- cillor Bill McLean has also talked to bylaw staff about increasing enforcement. "That will get the mes- sage out very quickly," he said. "I think everybody is on board with addressing this." Ashe said staff has no- ticed the main parking lot was full the first weekend the beach opened, but the overflow lot was empty. "We are getting some signage installed to let peo- ple know about the park- ing," he said. McLean initiated the opening of the Annland Street lot a few years ago when he saw the parking problem then. "That's about 80 or 90 spots," he said. "That's a lit- tle bigger than the parking lot we have at the bottom of Liverpool Road." He said there is also a large lot at Alex Robertson Park on Sandy Beach Road that would require a lon- ger walk. Seasonal staff are just going back to work at the City of Pickering. "We'll have people on the waterfront in regards to garbage pickup," Ashe said. In regards to physical distancing, the city has painted arrows on the bridge so people will stay on certain sides of the path. The city is also elim- inating fishing on the bridge. "We also have our bylaw people educating in re- gards to safe distancing and social distancing," Ashe said. He added the city is en- hancing its cleaning prac- tices. Ashe said he heard the complaints about speeding and the city has set up speed boards on Liverpool Road. Some residents have said they would like to see speed bumps installed and perhaps a sign at Wharf Street and Liverpool Road warning drivers that it's a dead end. McLean said he's not a fan of speed bumps be- cause he doesn't think they work. "But I would like to see the province allow us as a municipality to man and operate our own photo ra- dar units," he said. STORY BEHIND THE STORY:In regards to COVID-19, new concerns continue to pop up. Dur- hamregion.com is looking into those, including con- cerns at the beach. NEWS Continued from page 1 WHARF STREET NO QUIET CUL-DE-SAC DURING BEACH SEASON Wharf Street neighbours Elizabeth de Verneuil, left, and Cleveland Gervais stand at the cul-de-sac on Wharf Street, where the City has put up no parking signs. But neighbours are still concerned that people will park along the sides of their street and have an added concern due to COVID-19. Before long, the dove laid an egg and on June 14 they noticed a baby dove had hatched. The family kept taking pictures and soon realized there were actually two young doves, called squabs. "What has stood out to me the most is the devotion of the mommy and daddy doves towards their baby doves," Edwards says. "Both parents take turns keeping the babies warm while the other goes looking for food to feed them. When the one returns with the food, they trade places. It's a beautiful picture of true love and devotion." Like most people, you probably are busy with your work and family, and may not have the time or expertise needed to thoroughly understand the investment world. Here are a few questions to consider when choosing a financial advisor: What are your credentials? Make sure anyone you might work with has all the necessary securities licenses. Are you or the firm you represent affiliated with regulatory organizations?Ask whether the advisor or the firm he or she represents is regulated. This usually means client assets are protected in some way. How will you communicate with me? -You’ll want an investment professional who is easy to contact and who keeps you informed about your portfolio. Can you provide me with references? Don’t be too shy to ask for references.A reputable advisor will be happy to give you some names of people you can call to ask about the financial advisors style, responsiveness, etc. Your association with a financial advisor is one of the most important business relationships you’ll ever have. This means your current policy would not be renewed upon discovery of this ticket. Tom Hanks tells a toy story By Laura Harding It was 1991 when Tom Hanks rst went into a booth at Disney Studios to lend his voice to the character of cow- boy Woody. That was before “Sleepless In Seat- tle”, before his consecutive Oscar wins for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump”, and long before the world knew what a Pixar movie even was. When the lm eventually came out in 1995, the same year he starred in “Apol- lo 13”, it changed cinema forever. It was the rst feature-length lm entirely created using computer ani- mation, and it rewrote the rulebook on what an animated lm could be. “Every one of these lms has been some version of a miracle,” Hanks, now 62, says in wonder, days before the re- lease of “Toy Story 4”. “The rst one because we were all left wondering, ‘How did they do that?’ “Then the second one because, lo and behold, everything in there actually made sense and they solved all these problems. “I would say to them, ‘Hey Pixar, how are you going to get toys across a street in this one?’ And they say, ‘Yeah we have like 17 di erent scenarios of how to get toys across the street.’ “And if they can gure that out, I guess they can gure out all the other emotional arcs that they have to play with in this. “Then the end of 3 was... oh my lord it was like the end of “The Passion Play At Oberammergau” or something like that. It was this all-encompassing look at life and the lessons to be learned from it.” But it’s because of this that Hanks was nervous to come back and make a fourth lm. It’s been almost 10 years since the last one was in cinemas, won two Oscars (for best animated lm and best original song) and was widely considered to be the perfect conclusion to a beloved tril- ogy. It felt so nished that Hanks never ex- pected to make another. “I don’t think anybody did. When we rst began to talk about it, they don’t give us a script, they just kind of get to- gether with you and they say, ‘Here are some of the things we are planning to do’. “And speaking for the cast, the only questions I had were ‘When?’ and ‘Are you sure? Are you sure you want to take another stab at this?’ “Because we are just the voices and we sweat blood in order to get this thing out. They have to work on it for the bet- ter part of ve or six years from start to nish and if they screw up... man, they are toast, they don’t want to go through that.” Luckily they did not screw up. The new instalment nds Woody, Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) and the whole gang of toys far from home and discovering old friends and new ones on an eye-opening road trip. While new stars have joined the cast, including Keanu Reeves, Christine Hen- dricks and Jordan Peele, returning to Woody was an emotional experience for Hanks, whose life has changed so much since he rst uttered some of the cow- boy’s famous pull-string catchphrases. “I recorded as Woody for the rst time in 1991, in Studio B at the Disney Studios, with Doc the engineer. My last session for Toy Story 4 was in Studio B at Disney Studios with Doc the engineer. It was a big deal,” he re ects fondly. He was recently at Disneyland with his wife Rita Wilson and some of his grown-up children when the legacy of “Toy Story” really hit him. “They say it’s a franchise, when it’s the character you go back for, but I don’t know if I can put it in that way. “We were at Disneyland for one of those big, every character jamboree kind of light shows, a Mickey Fantasia, that kind of thing. “At the end of the show was this huge steamboat coming by, a paddlewheeler and every Disney character in creation is on it. “There was Mickey and the big bad wolf and Captain Hook and Pinocchio and all of the princesses, all the way through the ages and there on the boat too was Woody and Buzz and they were doing a choreographed dance and ev- Physical activity is a key component of healthy aging. It helps you maintain mobility and improve your balance, which reduces the risk of falls and injury. Adequate exercise can also slow or prevent the onset of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Here are six activities to keep you moving at any age. 1. Golf In addition to relieving stress, golf can improve your concentration. Opt to walk the course rather than rent a cart to get even more exercise. 2. Walking There are many physical and psychological benefits to walking. All you need is a stur- dy pair of running shoes. Plus, you can do it almost any- where. 3. Cycling This low-impact aerobic exercise helps with blood cir- culation, endurance and bal- ance. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and explore scenic trails. 4. Swimming Since it’s a non-weight- bearing exercise, swimming gives you a full-body workout without putting pressure on your hips, knees and back. For a change of pace, take a water aerobics class. 5. Stretching Activities like Pilates, yoga and tai chi enhance flexibility, balance and muscle strength. They’re usually practised in a group and can be adapted to accommodate reduced mo- bility. 6. Pickleball A cross between tennis, badminton and ping-pong, this sport is a great way to ex- press your competitive spirit without straining your mus- cles and joints. Keep in mind that all of these options have the poten- tial to be great social activities as well. — Newspaper Toolbox 6 types of exercise for all ages You don’t need to be the most creative person in the world to come up with a password that’s strong enough to keep some troublemaker from meddling in your business. DURHAM — A new report says most Durham District School Board construc- tion projects are on schedule, despite a four- week pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The province halted all school construc- tion work from April 4 to May 4. The only DDSB project that has been im- pacted is a rebuild of Beaverton P.S. and Thorah Central P.S. The new consolidated elementary school was supposed to open in September 2021, but that has now been bumped to September 2022. The project is currently waiting on ap- proval from the province before going to tender. Work is on schedule for the DDSB's two other new schools — an elementary school in north Whitby and a French immersion elementary school in north Ajax, both of which are scheduled to open in September 2021 as planned. Construction is set to start this month on several small projects, including a new ele- vator at Dunbarton High School, and ramps to provide barrier-free access to the librar- ies at Glengrove P.S. and Cartwright Cen- tral P.S. Construction starts June 30 on work to install full air conditioning at S.A Cawker P.S. and partial air conditioning at Valley Farm P.S., Cadarackque P.S., Harmony Heights P.S. and Glen Dhu P.S. The air conditioning work is part of a $17.7-million plan unveiled in 2017 that will ensure every DDSB school has air condi- tioning in the library and office at mini- mum, and that one elementary and high school in each geographic area is fully air- conditioned. ONE NEW DURHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DELAYED BY PANDEMIC JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com NEWS DURHAM - Police are appealing for wit- nesses to come forward as they investigate the death of a man whose body was found on Hwy. 401 in Ajax last week. The man, who has not been identified, was likely run over by transport truck or similar large vehicle, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said. Schmidt said officers arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. June 16 to find the "obviously deceased" man on the high- way, under the Harwood Avenue bridge. A number of witnesses were present when police arrived, "but the vehicle that drove over this man originally was not at the scene," Schmidt said. "We are asking for that driver to come forward and tell us what happened - they may not know what they drove over," he said. Police are trying to identify the victim's next of kin, Schmidt said. They're also try- ing to determine what happened before the man came to be on the highway. "Obviously the question remains as to what took place," he said. Bill fought a long, hard battle first with kidney cancer in 2006 and then with bowel cancer recently. Our prayers were answered as he had no pain, no cancer interventions, and he was able to stay in his own home taking in the beauty of his beloved garden. Bill was born and educated in Montreal, Quebec, and is predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Ellen (Nellie). He was an only child. He had two careers. He managed computers when they were a mystery to everyone eventually taking early retirement from Consumers Gas in 1989, and drove handicapped transit vehicles until he retired at 72. He loved his work and his passengers and only reluctantly retired when his health started to decline. Bill was an avid sailor from Frenchman's Bay for many years and enjoyed his involvement with the Pickering Yacht Club, being Commodore for several years. He excelled at everything he touched: gourmet cooking, stained glass, writing, gardening (winning the Garden of Distinction 3 years in a row in Pickering, Ontario) Bill leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Carolyn; a son, Al, in Calgary; and two step-children, Kelly (Derrick) and Robert (Alexandrea) who provided Bill the joy of his later years: 5 beautiful grandchildren; Jadzia, Joshua, Aubree, Natalie, and Harper. Because of COVID, Bill did not meet Harper but had lots of facetime with all the children. Bill also had a wide variety of friends from his many activities. He was known to be quick with a joke and always ready to spend some time "chinwagging", his many stories delighting his listeners. He will be missed by many friends and neighbours, whom he made his family. The neighbours and friends who were present and helpful in the last months are too many to be mentioned - they are appreciated beyond thanks. Also leaving behind three much loved cats: Austin, Zoe, and Abby. Bill was active in his local Churches, joining Carolyn in her ministry journeys, and made family from those connections as well. Many of his church friends were close by and lovingly helpful during his last few months. He loved his Lord and quietly served Him as a powerful intercessory prayer-warrior. Without a doubt, he is exploring the gardens in Heaven now. At his request, there will be no funeral service. His remains are at Newcastle Funeral Home and will undergo "Aquamation", due to his love of the water and environment. A memorial bench and tree will be placed on the Pickering Waterfront when COVID is over. A celebration of life will be held at some point in the future. The family would like to thank the excellent palliative team - especially Dr. Luigi Pedretti, Palliative Nurse Joe, PSW's Mayaya and Faith for their excellent care in the last weeks and days. No words can express the gratitude of the family for their patient and loving care of Bill and patience with anxious family. Bill Ross - 1942(dash)-2020 - "Enjoy the view and make the dash meaningful" RYAN, Michael ___________ It is with heavy hearts that the family of Michael Ryan announce his passing on June 26, 2020 at the age of 74. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (nee Wilkinson) and cherished father to Laura (John) and Andrea (Grant). Proud Grandfather of Matthew, Sophie, Benjamin, Paige, Kate and Jacob. He leaves behind his mother Donna and sister Peggy (Wayne). He is predeceased by his father Pat and brother Tom (Malle). Michael was born in Toronto and attended St. Joseph's elementary school and Riverdale Collegiate. It was at a CYO dance that he met his much-loved wife of 52 years, Elizabeth. After high school he decided to become a Plumber and joined Local 46. His trade was his passion and he taught night school for the Union and joined the staff of Durham College to teach in their Apprenticeship program. Michael and his wife moved to Ajax in 1971 and lived in their first home until his death. Throughout his life, he made many lasting friendships from school, the Ajax Hockey League, the Kinsmen club and while teaching. This was particularly true of a group of friends from the neighbourhood who became family. Summer vacations were spent with his family in Cape Breton, and he and Elizabeth travelled extensively. Michael could always be seen with his daily crossword puzzles. His family was his pride and joy and he will be sadly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakeridge Health Hospital Foundation or the Liver Foundation. DIONNE, Eugene Jesse "Gene" ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ (Retired Captain, Scarborough Fire Services) Born December 1950 and passed away peacefully at age 69 on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay, after a brief battle with cancer. Pre- deceased by parents, Peggy and Eugene Dionne. Father to Gina. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Mary (Jim) and Penny (Ed), as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. A private family service will be held at a later date at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Scarborough. In lieu of flowers, donations to Kidney Cancer Canada (www.kidneycancercanada.ca) or a charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated by the family. Wife to Karl Hemz Kratz. Ursula was also greatly loved by her sons Bernard and Ronald (Dorothy). Loved dearly by her grandchildren Veronica, Kevin and Colleen. Ursula liked working in the garden, and worked most of her life at Ajax Hospital. She loved playing cards with her friends and watching game shows. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
