The girls donated money to the Lake- ridge Ajax Pickering Hospital recently, and the money is being used for the site's COVID-19 fund. Money in the fund is used to buy supplies for staff and patients. It started with Sophie, 7, who raised $20 by doing chores around the house. She wanted the money to go to the hospital, be- cause that's where she was born. "Hello, my name is Sophie and I'm 7 years old. I'd like to donate $20 because I want to help the hospital keep people safe from the virus. I hope this helps. Love, So- phie," she wrote to the hospital with her donation. Olivia saw all the good Sophie's dona- tion did, so she wanted to help as well. With money she and Sophie raised, and with a contribution from their parents, Nick and Valerie Chehab, they donated $50 to the fund, and now a sign showing support for front-line workers is on the lawn of their Pickering home. Tracy Paterson, the CEO of the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation, said of the girls, "They are two little angels! Such a message of hope to see a young family working together to help their community in need. It feels great to know that the next generation is being taught to think about how they can make Ajax and Pickering a great place to live. Working for over 30 years in the philanthropic sector, I know that these lessons will stick with Olivia and Sophie their whole lives." — Do you know a COVID-19 Community Champion who is supporting others and making things better for their community during the pandemic? We want to hear about them! Please email us at news- room@durhamregion.com if you have a similar story to share. Don't forget to in- clude a photo. #TeamDurham. #Durham- Strong. The class action claims negli- gence, breach of contract and wrongful death on the part of Orchard Villa's owners, Southbridge Care Homes Inc. May 26 —The Canadi- an Armed Forces releases a scathing report that details allegations of appalling conditions at Orchard Villa and four other long-term care homes in Ontario. The report notes cock- roaches and flies at the Pickering long-term care home, rotten food, mat- tresses put on the floor to prevent residents from get- ting up and suggests im- proper feeding may have contributed to the death of a resident. May 27 —The provin- cial government announc- es it is taking over the man- agement of Orchard Villa and four other retirement homes in Ontario. Inspec- tion teams will be sent to the five homes and will be on site for two weeks, con- ducting interviews. May 29 —In a letter to families, Lakeridge Health says 146 residents have re- covered from COVID-19 and that officials antici- pate the outbreak at Or- chard Villa will be declared over "in the next week or two." OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY The Canadian military's report on conditions at Pick- ering's Orchard Villa long-term care home is beyond hor- rific. Cockroaches and flies. Rotting food and trays piled up beside beds. Residents left in soiled diapers, placed on mattresses on the ground so they can't get up; inadequate hydration and even a situation where the military ob- served what appeared to be a resident choking to death because the resident was fed while lying down. At Orchard Villa's long-term care home and retirement residence, 78 people have died due to COVID-19. The pandemic caused a catastrophic failure that was inevitable given the deteriorating conditions at long-term care homes across the province. Residents of long-term care homes are older and sicker than they were 20 years ago and fewer staff are being asked to care for them. The vast majority of long-term care residents have some form of cognitive impairment and two-thirds have a dementia diagnosis. A full 86 per cent require extensive help with daily activities like getting out of bed, eating and toileting. Successive governments of different parties have failed to address an inadequate system that left vulnerable se- niors at risk until this pandemic forced all of us to pay at- tention. The Canadian military reported on five homes but one wonders how many other homes are on the brink of cata- strophic failure. After all, families have been sounding the alarm about long-term care conditions for years. So, how do we fix it? Adequately train and pay staff decent full-time wages so they're not left to piece together multiple part-time jobs to make a living. This includes training in infection prevention and con- trol, and instructions on donning and doffing PPE which must be available to them. But training isn't enough. Even the best-trained staff will fail if they do not have adequate time to care for residents. The Ontario NDP has called for a minimum of four hours of hands-on care for every resident and, as the situa- tion in Orchard Villa shows, a set minimum is clearly needed. We also need a robust inspection system where inspec- tors regularly visit long-term care homes without warn- ing. Canada's military documented substantial issues in five homes in a matter of weeks. Why didn't the provincial inspection system provide similar scrutiny? We support calls from families for an independent in- quiry into the large number of deaths at Orchard Villa and other long-term care homes. In addition to providing ac- countability and transparency, an inquiry would yield further solutions. But that doesn't mean waiting months and months for that process to conclude. We must start fixing it now. We can't have another cata- strophic failure at a long-term care home. WHAT HAPPENED AT ORCHARD VILLA CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN LOCAL MUSLIMS CONDEMN SYSTEMATIC ANTI-BLACK, ANTI-INDIGENOUS RACISM To the editor: In the aftermath of George Floyd's killing, the anti-racism protests erupt- ed in many North Ameri- can cities, putting a spot- light on the deeply en- trenched anti-black bigot- ry and injustice in the land of rights, liberty and equal- ity. Floyd's ruthless suffoca- tion was one such atrocity. He is not the cause of the un- rest; he is the symbol of it. There is global outrage. The fires burning in towns and cities right across the US starkly illuminate the long simmering issue of the persistent discrimina- tion and brutalities com- mitted against its Black population. There is pow- erful passion in these pro- tests challenging the status quo, an expression of re- vulsion and fury. It's time to heal the ra- cial divisions and promote understanding by striking a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to redress the nation's legacy of oppres- sion and inequality. Perva- sive racism smacks at the magnanimous ideals of the founding fathers of the United States of America. It smacks at the very core of its claim to be a model de- mocracy with rights, op- portunities, equality and accountability. In this time of pain and grief, we at the Pickering Islamic Centre denounce the systematic anti-Black and anti-Indigenous rac- ism and other forms of so- cial injustice by standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Black and Indigenous com- munities and with all fair- minded people. We must recognize that as Canadians, we do not al- ways live up to our highest ideals -- but we must strive for them, together. And we must speak out forcefully against all forms of preju- dice wherever we see it. In the words of Dr. Martin Lu- ther King: "The ultimate tragedy is not the oppres- sion and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people." Feelings of sadness, an- ger, fear and a sense of help- lessness at this time are shared by all of us. We rec- ognize that many members of our community, especial- ly our brothers and sisters in the Black community, may need support at this time. We must do whatever we can to help them. We live through a mo- ment in history that calls for leadership and action anchored in consideration, compassion and courage. We can not be complacent. Now is not the time for us to be silent. If you regularly work or study from home, a comfort- able office is vital. Here are five things to consider if you want to create a productive environ- ment. 1. Location It’s best to choose a space that’s removed from the rest of your home. A door that sepa- rates your office from other rooms will help you concen- trate during the day and discon- nect from work in the evening. 2. Desk Choose the biggest desk that can comfortably fit in your office. If you choose an L- or U- shaped desk, it’ll provide ample room for computers, printers and other equipment. 3. Storage A bookshelf, filing cabinet or other storage unit is required to hold the things you don’t need every day. 4. Lighting Ideally, your home office has big windows that let in lots of natural light. If not, you’ll need ambient lighting to ensure the space is bright enough. Task lighting, such as a desk lamp, is also a must. 5. Chair If you spend hours at a time sitting down, invest in a com- fortable chair. Choose an ad- justable one with wheels that offers adequate lumbar sup- port. Don’t forget to personalize your home office.
