"We both remain committed to the project," said Pickering depu- ty mayor Kevin Ashe, referring to the city and Pickering Town Cen- tre owner OPB Realty. "I imagine it will start up again in short order to finalize the de- molition of the old Sears wing," he said. In 2018, the city and Cushman and Wakefield (property manag- ers of Pickering Town Centre) an- nounced a partnership for the re- development of lands on the east side of the mall property, and city lands on the south side of Espla- nade South. The plan is for new state-of- the-art buildings and facilities, including a performing arts cen- tre and a new Pickering Central Library, all to be connected by pe- destrian-friendly walkways. "The financial plan for the City Centre project was based on (the) city receiving the first $10 million in casino revenues," said Pickering treasurer Stan Kar- wowski. The Pickering casino was set to open in April, but due to the pandemic, it has been delayed. Karwowski said the goal is to 're- visit the project in the fall.' Ashe noted casinos are start- ing to open up in North America, but with physical distancing safe- guards in place. This means reve- nue could be lower than expected in the early stages. Purely speculating, Ashe feels the Pickering casino will open up in August or September. "I've been in the casino," he said. "It is ready to go. The plan is CITY CENTRE DEVELOPMENT STILL A GO KRISTEN CALIS KCalis@durhamregion.com The City of Pickering is putting construction of the City Centre project on hold until some questions are answered. The city was waiting for $10 million in casino revenue to put toward the first phase of the project, but the date of the casino opening is unknown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From the doctors, nurses, paramedics, personal support workers and pharmacists who are caring and providing for our sick; to the police and firefighters who are keeping us safe; to the farmers, food processors, truck drivers and grocery store staff who are keeping food on our tables —thank you! To those who are keeping our lights on, keeping our water safe, keeping our hospitals, stores and facilities clean, and to those keeping our buses and trains operating —thank you! You make us proud. Our essential workers show the Ontario spirit with their courage, compassion, and generosity. You step up every day to ensure individuals, families and seniors have what they need to stay safe and healthy. And to everyone else, thank you for doing your part to protect others. For weeks now, you have stayed home and avoided going out with family, friends and co-workers. This self-discipline is paying off and people are starting to go back to work. But until an effective treatment or vaccine is widely available, COVID-19 still poses a threat. As businesses reopen remember to follow the rules and practice physical distancing, wash your hands thoroughly and often, wear a face covering if physical distancing is a challenge, and stay home if unwell. By continuing to take these simple actions you are truly making a difference. Your Ontario government thanks everyone for doing the right thing. According to a Picker- ing staff report, the uncer- tainty around construction could also slow down the City Centre's progress. While labour is locally sourced, the impact CO- VID-19 and the provincial lockdown has had on the construction industry sup- pliers is unknown. The city is also pushing for quicker development of Durham Live. Aside from the casino, Durham Live will feature a film studio, restaurants, a hotel and en- tertainment, and is touted to create 10,000 jobs. The city recently sent a letter along with Durham Live developer Triple Group of Companies to the Province of Ontario, re- questing zoning restric- tions be lifted through a Minister's Zoning Order so the rest of construction can move forward. The Durham Live zon- ing bylaw contains a hold- ing which requires a new Hwy. 401 interchange be- fore it can be lifted. At a recent special coun- cil meeting, a letter to council from Durham Live representative Don Given said the holding needs to be lifted for large users be- yond the casino resort and film studio to proceed. Ashe said Durham Live is in serious discussions with a large company in- terested in the portion of the site west of Squires Beach Road. The company would de- velop a distribution and production facility on the roughly 70-to-85-acre site, bringing in 2,000 to 4,000 jobs. Development charges in the range of $20 million to $80 million are anticipated, along with new property tax assessment in the range of $5 to $20 million annually. Steve Apostolopoulos, managing parter of Triple Group of Companies, said the region needs this pro- ject as an economic stimu- lus given the winding down of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and the closing of General Motors in Oshawa. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: The Pickering City Centre and the Picker- ing Casino Resort are long-awaited projects ex- pected to boost the local economy and vibrancy, but are experiencing a setback due to COVID-19. Across the region remarkable people are reaching out (in safe ways) to support and raise up others. Your community newspa- per wants to bring you these exam- ples of hope and heart in the midst of the pandemic coverage. Champ name:Ally and Han- nah Hollingshead. How they create connection across the physical distance:Ally, 12, and Hannah, 15, have delivered the Pickering News Advertiser since 2016. As they learned more about COVID-19 and its impact on the com- munity, they decided they wanted to support the local food bank. They in- cluded a letter with the paper, letting their neighbours know their next carrier collection would be donated to a community food bank. The girls collected $210 and donated it to St. Paul's on-the-Hill Community Food Bank, which serves residents of Pickering and Ajax. "The neighbours really stepped up. They really came through and helped out," said father Dave Hol- lingshead. "As much as the girls did a good thing, our neighbours made it happen ... It is a wonderful neighbourhood and they have treated our girls very well with the newspapers. It's their first job for both of them. My youngest started when she was 8." The sisters donated all of their collections from the past three weeks, $210, to the St. Paul's on-the-Hill Foodbank. Dave Hollingshead photo COMMUNITY PICKERING — A Pickering na- tive has realized his dream by mak- ing it to the Canadian Football League. Matt Guevremont attended St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Ajax before heading to universi- ty in the United States, where he played on three different teams be- fore being drafted by the BC Lions. The offensive lineman played football in California and Ohio be- fore ending up at Indiana Universi- ty of Pennsylvania. Guevremont, now 25, started playing football in Grade 9 at St. Mary and as soon as he did, he knew the sport was for him. "I quickly fell in love with the game and my coaches in high school were always supportive of me," he said. "They always told me how much potential I had in the sport and how I could one day make it to the CFL if I just kept working." He's had to work hard almost constantly since first starting col- lege football in the U.S. "I had to sacrifice seeing family and friends here at home to go to school in the U.S. where my life re- volved around football. I learned a lot and grew a tremendous amount and I wouldn't change a thing be- cause now I get a chance to live my dream by playing professional foot- ball," Guevremont said. Now he's seeing that hard work paying off. "I couldn't be more excited to get to B.C. and start working with the Lions and I love that I can re- present Pickering while doing so," he said. The province an- nounced that certain health and medical servic- es have resumed, begin- ning May 19. This includes in-person counselling and scheduled surgeries, provided that they meet Ontario Health guidelines, as well as ser- vices such as rehabilita- tion for children. There are a number of measures that must be fol- lowed to allow scheduled surgeries and procedures to commence, such as the following for hospitals: • proper, conventional in-patient space must be available • critical supplies must exceed both current usage and projected needs for surgeries and procedures specifically • health human resourc- es must not be excessively impacted • the hospital's plan must be approved prior to surgeries commencing "In order to do this safe- ly and balance the need to restart the economy, while ramping up all these differ- ent services, we need to continue to protect every- one from the risk of expo- sure, we need to treat those who are infected and con- tinue to preserve the sys- tem capacity to respond to another outbreak or surge," new Ontario Medi- cal Association president Dr. Samantha Hill said. DURHAM — The CO- VID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval for Dur- ham businesses of every shape and size. Many have adapted quickly to new concepts like curbside pickup, and physically distanced shop- ping. But, what happens when bringing people to- gether is at the heart of your business? That's the challenge for places like Joey's World, a popular indoor play- ground in Bowmanville. Gord Gill, who owns the business with his wife Ni- na, says it was "devastat- ing" to close on the eve of March break — their big- gest week of the year. "The timing couldn't have been worse for a busi- ness like ours," Gill says. "We're a mom and pop shop, not a big franchise." Joey's World has been closed ever since, and the owners acknowledge that recreational businesses will probably be some of the last to reopen. When they finally do, there will be big challeng- es around how to operate safely, but still offer the kind of fun customers' kids are used to. Joey's World features giant play structures, rock climbing, archery and a high rope course. It's a lot of equipment to keep clean even pre-pandemic. Gill says they have always prid- ed themselves on running a hygienic playground. What will that look like when Joey's World re- opens? The owners are still researching and weighing options. "We plan on coming back from this, but in what capacity? We don't know," Gill says. "We know there is going to be a rebound for recreational activities. But, safety is everything. We have to be smart and re- ally think about, how do we do this?" At Durham Escape Rooms in Whitby, co-own- er Benito Suppa says they were already shifting to new protocols in early March, before closing their doors. Their back-to-work plan will include personal protective equipment for staff, shields for the front desk, spacing out bookings to allow for more cleaning time and using both lob- bies to keep customers dis- tanced from one another. Suppa says they may re- open their 10 escape rooms in phases, instead of all at once. "We're lucky that we are more of a controlled envi- ronment. People are in a separate space from other guests," he says. "We're just hoping people will want to continue to use recreation after all this." He is also hoping to see more support from gov- ernment for recreational businesses and more spot- lighting for the industry similar to national takeout days to support restau- rants during the pandem- ic. It's been less than a year since Flying Squirrel Sports opened its 37,000 square foot park in Whitby with different types of trampoline courts, an in- flatable area for toddlers, aerial silks, foam pits, bas- ketball hoops, a battle beam and a slackline. When the space re- opens, it will be with a lot of new measures in place. "Like every recreation- al sport, the environment is social and will require an adjustment to a new normal," says Luke Schueler, owner and co- founder of Flying Squirrel Sports. Facilities will undergo "electrostatic disinfectant cleaning" and there will be hourly sanitizing as well as dedicated staff for cleaning frequently touched surfaces. Trampoline courts will have limited capacity and daily sanitizing schedules, staff will be required to ear face masks and do temper- ature checks, there will be barriers at cash registers and physical distancing markers in the lobbies and at check-in. Dodgeball court capaci- ty will be reduced to 50 per cent and balls will be sani- tized throughout game play, while foam pits will be covered with a "propri- etary material" that is an- ti-bacterial and anti-viral. While recreational business are waiting for the green light to reopen, Schueler says customers can offer support by buy- ing a gift card or admission pass to use later, or even just leaving a positive re- view on social media. "Reviews during a time like this also helps us busi- ness owners stay sane by putting a smile on our fac- es," he says. "It's always up- lifting and morale boosting when we hear from custom- ers who are empathetic to what we're going through." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Durhamregion- .com has been following the impact of COVID-19 on businesses of all types in Durham, from how restau- rants shifted to takeout and delivery only, to how small businesses adapted to curbside pickup. Many recreation businesses will face challenges to reopening safely, because their business is social by nature. Joey's World indoor playground owner Gord Gill says his first priority will be safety. Any- thing else is bad for business. The COVID-19 outbreak has un- leashed an unprecedented shock to our economic and social systems. Business owners, operators and job providers are facing tough circum- stances and revenue shortfalls. With an unclear road ahead, it would be easy to give in to fear and anxiety. However, resilient businesses pay close attention to the certainties in their operations. ENTREPRENEURS WANTED MORE THAN EVER True entrepreneurs can be found in new ventures and estab- lished entities. We know from man- agement research how the effective ones excel in unpredictable envi- ronments - working with what they have, securing additional resources from customers and partners and ensuring they can afford potential losses. They are creators and doers who acknowledge the "unknown unknowns," and focus on what they can control and protect themselves from an excessive downside. The way in which these business- es install more certain and favoura- ble forces in their business environ- ment presents the core of effectua- tion, a leading-edge management concept taught in entrepreneurship and strategic management courses at Trent University Durham GTA. LEVERAGING WHAT YOU HAVE AND KNOW First, entrepreneurs should know the state of expenses and cash flow in the business. Immediately assess if the business is still afford- able. It's about the worst-case sce- nario. If cost reduction is necessary and people must be let go for now, make the cut fast, short and profes- sional. An unaffordable business is a bad business in uncertain times. Second, pursue known financial and policy supports from all levels of governments. Banks also offer additional assistance. Contact them to secure additional resources for greater endurance. Third, remember that customers did not disappear. Many have sim- ply had to suppress and defer their needs. Others now have new, unmet needs. Businesses can pivot to cap- ture these opportunities and create solutions for them. Finally, companies can ensure that their processes remain effective in this new normal and that employ- ees have the tools and guidelines they need to perform as best as they can. For those who have reserves to invest in future acquisitions, extraor- dinary bargains and enormous sav- ings may be on the horizon. RENEWAL AHEAD OF REOPENING As we reopen our economies and communities, we know our custom- ers will return, but the way they shop and interact will be different. Health and safety will be top of mind. We need to address these con- cerns while renewing business growth and expanding those new offerings that we have just created. Businesses of all sizes are seek- ing resilience and are finding ways to target the controllable. Focusing on certainty in uncertain times pro- vides a sense of progress and com- petence, which is tremendous not only for business resilience, but al- so for our own mental health and personal resilience. Directors should be prepared to contribute approximately 5 hours per month for a 3-year term. Additional time may be required for other volunteer roles taken on during the term of the Board service. Candidates interested in making a difference in the community by becoming a Board member are invited to submit a cover letter and resume to VP@sunriseseniors.com. Within the content of your cover letter please include an answer to the following question: "How does your knowledge, expertise, or life experience prepare you for a position on the Sunrise Seniors Place Board?" While we appreciate all interest in this volunteer opportunity, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. VP@SunriseSeniors.com **!$$$ !AAAA!
