HomeMy WebLinkAboutNA2020_05_21THURSDAY MAY 21, 2020 DURHAM — Spring is usually prime time for college and univer- sity open houses — but this year, future students are checking out their schools on a screen instead of in person. Christine Fox is starting at Durham College as a new student this fall, and until recently, she was a bit nervous about being the only mature student in the horti- culture — food and farming pro- gram. Attending a virtual open house on April 25, put her at ease. "I got see that there are other mature students, too, that was re- ally cool," the 34-year-old Ajax resident says. The virtual open house was the first college open house Fox has ever attended and she's not disappointed that it took place from a distance. "It was really well put togeth- er," she says, explaining how she chatted with faculty and students from her program in a live ses- sion. Fox — who hopes to one day start own hot sauce company us- ing homegrown peppers — is one of thousands of incoming college and university students in Onta- rio who are familiarizing them- selves with schools digitally. More than 2,300 prospective students and their families from 90 countries took part in Durham College's first virtual open house on April 25. From the doctors, nurses, paramedics, personal support workers and pharmacists who are caring and providing for our sick; to the police and firefighters who are keeping us safe; to the farmers, food processors, truck drivers and grocery store staff who are keeping food on our tables —thank you! To those who are keeping our lights on, keeping our water safe, keeping our hospitals, stores and facilities clean, and to those keeping our buses and trains operating —thank you! You make us proud. Our essential workers show the Ontario spirit with their courage, compassion, and generosity. You step up every day to ensure individuals, families and seniors have what they need to stay safe and healthy. And to everyone else, thank you for doing your part to protect others. For weeks now, you have stayed home and avoided going out with family, friends and co-workers. This self-discipline is paying off and people are starting to go back to work. But until an effective treatment or vaccine is widely available, COVID-19 still poses a threat. As businesses reopen remember to follow the rules and practice physical distancing, wash your hands thoroughly and often, wear a face covering if physical distancing is a challenge, and stay home if unwell. By continuing to take these simple actions you are truly making a difference. Your Ontario government thanks everyone for doing the right thing. Whether inside or out, stay apart, stay safe and save lives. 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) To Ontario’s Essential Workers, Thank You To everyone else, thank you for staying apart and protecting others. DURHAM — Across Durham, students from Grade 8 right up to college and university have seen their spring graduation ceremonies cancelled. Here's a recap of the deci- sions local school boards and post-secondary schools have made so far. — Durham College has postponed its spring convo- cation ceremony and will provide information about rescheduling once deci- sions have been made, while Ontario Tech Univer- sity has postponed its con- vocation until the fall. Trent University's Dur- ham campus is planning a virtual convocation cere- mony for this spring and the school is surveying stu- dents about what they would like it to include. An in-person convoca- tion ceremony will take place in June 2021. Trent says rescheduling to fall was considered, but notes "a great deal of un- certainty remains around how soon the university will be able to hold large gatherings of this nature." — The Durham District School Board has cancelled board-sanctioned trips and events up to June 30, but hasn't made a final deci- sion on graduation. "We have not yet made a decision about cancelling June graduation ceremo- nies and will continue to explore alternative options should June graduation ceremonies be cancelled," a statement from the board says. "One such option may include events in the late summer/fall." — The Durham Catholic District School Board says graduation and com- mencement ceremonies will be rescheduled for the fall "in keeping with event guidelines and require- ments to come from public health." — The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Catholic Dis- trict School Board sent a letter to graduating stu- dents noting the spring graduation ceremony has been rescheduled to Oct. 8. Each PVNCCDSB school will also work with students and parents to plan a social event to re- place proms that have been cancelled. — The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board says fall graduation ceremonies are a possibili- ty. "Our school administra- tors have been planning how graduation ceremo- nies may take place in the fall. As this planning contin- ues, schools will be provid- ing further information to students and families relat- ed to their individual schools," the board says. KPRDSB elementary schools are "exploring a number of possibilities" to celebrate Grade 8 gradua- tions and Grade 6 leaving ceremonies. HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH GRADUATION CEREMONIES IN DURHAM Ontario Tech University held its 2019 convocation ceremonies for students graduating from the science program and business and information technology program on June 6 at the Tribute Communities Centre. Ryan Pfeiffer/Torstar JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com NEWS #LEARNFROMHOME MEANS MANY SPRING CONVOCATIONS ARE BEING BUMPED TO THE FALL Kirstyn Barclay, who recently completed the pa- ralegal program at Dur- ham College, was online for the open house fielding questions. She says future stu- dents were curious about her experience with online classes, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced Durham College to move to remote learning in March. "It was nice to be able to assure future students that it's not as daunting as it might seem," Barclay says. "I could see how that would be nerve-racking. “I was a little bit wor- ried at first too ... but we were able to participate in our classes and complete our assignments and I ac- tually enjoyed it." As a student ambassa- dor at Trent University's Durham campus, Brooke Dakers is used to giving tours and talking to pro- spective students about the school. When Trent's open house went virtual in April, she helped out as a moderator for two of the live sessions. "People were coming in so fast, it was really well at- tended," says Dakers, who is set to start her third year of the English literature program in the fall. "There were lots of questions, it was great that this was live and not pre- recorded, so people could interact." Trent officials say the number of students that registered for the virtual open house, surpassed the total number who attended last year's in-person March break open house. Courtice resident Em- ma MacLean will be start- ing at Trent this fall in the teacher education stream and says the virtual open house was a chance to talk to an academic adviser, learn about residence and take a virtual tour. "I never got a chance to go to the school before ac- cepting my offer, it was a big help to be able to be able to ask questions in real time and get them an- swered," she says. "I'm re- ally happy the universities are being proactive and trying to give students this experience." Ontario Tech is also tak- ing its open houses online — the next one is planned for May 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Durham's post- secondary schools have moved quickly to get open houses, tours and other supports online this spring. We wanted to know how current and future students are finding the experience of doing these events on a screen, instead of in person. Work had been on hold following the outbreak of COVID-19. During a May 14 news conference, Ford touted construction in- dustry efforts in using best practices to keep workers safe during the pandemic. "Allowing all residen- tial construction to pro- ceed in Ontario as of next week will have a tremen- dously positive impact on the economic recovery of the province as well as en- suring that housing is pro- vided for thousands of On- tarians," Residential Con- struction Council of Onta- rio president Richard Lyall said in a news re- lease. "It will be critical that the municipal develop- ment and building review, permitting and inspection process support the indus- try's efforts." He said the group is identifying any safety in- novations that could help. "We will continue to ad- here to Ministry of Labour health and safety guide- lines and remain vigilant addressing issues before they become hazards," RESCON vice-president Andrew Pariser added. GrandDad's Old Fash- ion Ice Cream Parlour by the waterfront is accepting donations and leaving them out so those who could use a helping hand can pick up essentials they need. GrandDad Cares is a collective supporting our communities with love and compassion. "I saw people were in need of food and afraid to go out," said GrandDad's owner Rev. Michlynn Wal- ton. She wipes down dona- tions and sets them out for the taking in front of her store. Donations are ac- cepted any time from noon to 4 p.m. daily, and are also available for pickup at that time. Those who would pre- fer, can call Walton any time to let her know what they would like, and she'll put together a package and leave it outside for pickup. The shop owner began her COVID-19 efforts through volunteering with the Pickering-Ajax arm of the Durham Region Care Mongers, a group of volun- teers offering help to those suffering during the pan- demic. Now, Walton said, she is simply co-ordinating the efforts of people al- ready helping others. "I was able to network," she said. "It's in support of a lot of the groups that are already doing a fantastic job." The work goes beyond the food donations in front of the shop. Walton has also asked for items to support women displaced by domestic vio- lence. A woman recently fled her husband with her children, including a baby, and Walton was able to col- lect staples and clothes for them. "I am beyond happy with the response of every- body," she said. "People want to give." Next, she's working with people volunteering to sew masks, which she would like to make avail- able at different points throughout Durham. She's also helping Dur- ham Children's Aid Society and local food banks when she can. "If someone needs help, I put the word out. Call me," she said. She was also accepting toiletries that were put into care packages with a spe- cial message, to provide the homeless with a gift to help them feel loved, supported and valued. She wants to keep her initiative going once the pandemic is through. "I just think this is a very transformative time for us as individuals, as families, as communities, it's a little bit of a wake-up," she said. "Let's just keep this love and support and kindness growing beyond COVID and just incorpo- rate it with our lives. We can't go back to the way it was. That wasn't working for us." Walton asks those put- ting donations together to do so as if they were feeding their own family. "Everybody deserves dignity and love and com- passion," she said. The shop is located at 597 Liverpool Rd., Picker- ing. Call 289-200-6868 for more information. ICE CREAM SHOP SCOOPS OUT GOODS DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC Rev. Michlynn Walton, owner of GrandDad's Old Fashion Ice Cream Parlour, is co-ordinating an effort to help those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has been collecting items such as non-perishable food, baby diapers and formula. She then cleans them and puts them outside of her shop for anyone in need to collect. "We as a community are devastated with the high loss of life — over 70 souls," said Ward 3 regional coun- cillor David Pickles. "This is not just a number, these are spouses, parents and grandparents with griev- ing families all lost in one residence home in a few weeks. It's horrific." Pickles introduced the motion at a special council meeting May 13. It asked that other af- fected long-term care homes, retirement homes, and other congregate facil- ities be part of the investi- gation as well, and that im- pacted families be able to participate. In a statement, Orchard Villa executive director Ja- son Gay said, "Our sole fo- cus is on the health and safety of our residents. It's our duty as care providers to protect the people in our home and we take that re- sponsibility extremely se- riously. "Orchard Villa is active- ly working to combat CO- VID-19 with our partners at Lakeridge Health and the Canadian Armed Forces, and we are grateful they answered our call for help. This is an unprecedented challenge with an unprece- dented impact and we will continue to fight for the safety and health of our residents as the situation evolves." People affected by the outbreak spoke to council in support of the motion. Cathy Parkes' father, Paul Parkes, moved into Or- chard Villa in November. In April, he had re- turned from dinner in a common room when he spoke to his daughter on the phone. She questioned why he was eating with others during a province- wide pandemic. Her father went down- hill quickly. He couldn't speak on April 13. On April 14, she decided on a whim to park below his second- storey window. "Once I saw my father lying on his back in a coma- tose state, my worst fears were realized," she said to council. When she asked that he receive oxygen, she was told he did not qualify. She was told a hospital trip would be fruitless. "At that moment, I knew my father was suffering and I was being told I had no way to help him or even see him," she said. On April 15, she received a call stating "Paul Parkes had died," immediately fol- lowed by the question, 'When will you pick up his body and his personal be- longings?' She reached out to other families. "The pieces of informa- tion when set parallel to my own knowledge, told a tale of neglect, starvation and dehydration," she said. She received word her father was COVID-19 posi- tive on May 6. "I do not believe my fa- ther died directly as a re- sult of COVID-19, but rath- er due to neglect, dehydra- tion and starvation, and no one deserves that fate," she said. The last time June Mor- rison saw her father. He was 20 feet away behind a window. He died on May 3. In 2017, George Morri- son was placed into care at Orchard Villa, with Alz- heimer's disease, dementia and Parkinson's disease. When his daughter first visited him there, she learned he had refused to eat or drink since arriving three days before, the first of many issues she experi- enced. "That was very alarm- ing to me that a person of his age (93), my dad could be left in this state," she said. She learned about the Orchard Villa outbreak through the media. She had difficulty get- ting answers from Orchard Villa, but met a family member of another resi- dent who was living in the same room as her father. The man later tested posi- tive for COVID-19. Morri- son said she was told by staff that her father was moved to a different room, but later learned he was still in the same room as the dying man. "I feared that he was be- ing neglected," she said. He had received a false positive for COVID-19 twice. When her father was later admitted to hospital, June Morrison was told he was diagnosed with an- orexia. She's awaiting the re- sults of an autopsy. "Gross negligence has occurred here, with duty of care lacking and necessi- ties of life denied to our loved ones," she said. Parkes said Orchard Villa waited too long to ask for help. "There were two weeks where residents were left to fend for themselves," she said. "Those weeks have led to nearly every resident in the home becoming infec- ted with COVID-19 ... It is clear that the management at Orchard Villa did not prepare for a pandemic they saw coming. It's clear that they did not properly train their staff." The City of Pickering is lowering flags at all of its facilities for the week. It will hold a memorial event for all of Pickering's CO- VID-19 victims once the provincial emergency or- der is lifted. "Our community has paid far too great of a toll in the number of lives we lost to COVID-19," said Deputy Mayor Kevin Ashe. "We must commit to ensuring that a tragedy of this mag- nitude never occurs again." 'IT'S HORRIFIC' Flowers have been placed at the entrance to Orchard Villa Retirement Community. Cherished and adored by Cathrine (Edmondson) for over 50 years and by their son Andrew for nearly as long. Predeceased by his parents James and Josephine and his little brother John. Much beloved by younger brother Thoms (Sharron) of Oshawa, sisters Josephine (Dr. John Wilkins) of Winnipeg and Alma of Oshawa; he will also be missed by an assortment of nieces, nephews and Uncle Shelby of Bowmanville. To many others, James was affectionately known as "Daddy". Born on April 17th, 1941 in Widnes, Lancs but raised in Bolton, Lancs, James came with his family to Canada in 1953, when they settled in Oshawa. James was an interesting man who had many interests: music, clothes, history, art, food, books, animals, politics. He was civic-minded - joining the Ont R's, voting in every election, paying his taxes, involving himself in various causes, assisting with the several Boards of Directors Cathrine was on. Avidly athletic, he earned a brown belt in judo before achieving 5th Dan black with Shoto Kan Dharma karate. He canoed Northern Ontario with the Beaver Bashers, hiked miles with the Oak Ridges Trail Association, snow-shoed with another mad-cap group, took Andrew on LRP's with the College Hill Commandoes. Above all else, James loved music. Aside from listening to just about everything, we managed bands, had a dance club, co-hosted a radio show, were brought together by our mutual love for Jimmy Reed. Music was never "back- ground" - it was our life! James was a decent, gentle man - deeply spiritual - who worked hard all his life and truly believed he would eventually join his SUBUD brothers in a better place. Cathrine and Andrew thank the many staff at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital who made his final weeks as comfortable as possible. A firm believer in incineration, James will be cremated, with arrangements being handled by Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville. James was especially fond of donkeys since first seeing them on the beach at Blackpool as a lad; donations to the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada (near Guelph) would be appreciated by both man and beast. He was 74 years of age and he and Doreen would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on May 11th. Keith was born to Ralph Thomas and Edith (nee Ball) Williams on December 22, 1945. The youngest of three boys, he had dreams of going into dentistry. Instead, he worked for Consumers Gas/ Enbridge for over 40 years, starting off in the mailroom and retiring as IT Architect. It was at Consumers Gas that he met and married Doreen Scutchings and together raised two children, Heather and Bryan. The family moved to Pickering, ON in the early 1970s; Keith and Doreen moved to Ajax in 2017. Keith loved sports, photography, and music. Hockey, baseball, golf, and bowling were all passions of his. He played goalie and coached junior hockey in the 1970s. He and Doreen indulged a love of bowling by joining local bowling leagues and when the weather turned nice, he could be found on the golf course with family, good friends, and work colleagues. Keith's interest in photography blossomed after inheriting his father's camera equipment and the family is blessed with a treasure trove of photos, many of special family events, his grandchildren and the local wildlife. Keith and Doreen loved to go to the Toronto Zoo and many of the animals had their portraits taken on these visits - along with the occasional squirrel provided they stood still long enough! Keith was a lifelong music lover. An excellent pianist and vocalist, he sang in the Senior Choirs' at Dunbarton-Fairport and Pickering Village United Churches, was the accompanist for the Junior Choir at Dunbarton-Fairport, and performed with the Scarborough Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the North Toronto Players. A long-time member of the Beaver Bible Class (Westway United), he was involved in their annual musical-revue, The Beaver Show, lending his vocal and acting talents to raise funds for the many causes supported by the Bible Class. Keith loved all kinds of music: Mozart, gospels rag-time, and show-tunes could all be heard coming from his piano. In addition to the piano, he also played the cello and the organ and tried his hand at the harmonica a time or two. Keith is survived by his wife, Doreen, and their children Heather (Kerry) and Bryan (Jennifer) along with grandchildren Breanna and Joshua; also his sisters-in-law Kathe (Larry) and Lynn, nieces Sandra, Jill, and Lesley-Ann, and nephews Raymond and Robert. He is pre-deceased by his parents and his brothers Earl (2013) and Roy (2020) and sister-in-law Peggy (2002). Keith loved to sing, enjoyed a good laugh, was dedicated to serving others, and kept on waiting for his beloved Maple Leafs to reclaim the Stanley Cup. The family wishes to express our thanks to the staff at Ballycliffe Long Term Care Home for their excellent care of Keith over the past 2 ½ years. We will hold a celebration of Keith's life and internment ceremony at a later date when it is safe for family and friends to gather. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Music programs at Dunbarton-Fairport United Church (https://www.dunbartonfairport .on.ca/About/Donate) or Pickering Village United Church (www.pvuc.ca) or to the Toronto Zoo (https://www.wildlifeconservan cy.ca/donate) are appreciated.
