On behalf of everyone in the province, the Ontario government would like to thank the heroes who go to work each day to keep our essential services and businesses available during the COVID-19 outbreak. From the doctors, nurses, paramedics, personal support workers and pharmacists who are caring and providing for our sick; to the police and firefighters who are keeping us safe; to the farmers, food processors, truck drivers and grocery store staff who are keeping food on our tables —thank you! To those who are keeping our lights on, keeping our water safe, keeping our hospitals, stores and facilities clean, and to those keeping our buses and trains operating —thank you! You make us proud. Our essential workers show the Ontario spirit with their courage, compassion, and generosity. You step up every day to ensure individuals, families and seniors have what they need to stay safe and healthy. And to everyone else who is staying home and practicing physical distancing —thank you! You are truly making a difference in our fight against COVID-19. We know being isolated from family, friends and neighbours is not easy, but it is absolutely necessary to save lives and beat this terrible virus. We encourage people to stay connected by phone, email or through virtual get-togethers. Staying connected and supporting each other is critically important. We also want to remind people to only go out if absolutely necessary to pick up groceries, a prescription or to go to a medical appointment. Together, we will beat COVID-19, but it will take your determination and cooperation. Physical distancing and hand washing are working, but we must keep going. The price we pay for not staying at home and following the advice of the medical experts is a matter of life and death. Your Ontario government thanks everyone for doing the right thing. Stay home. Stay strong. Save lives. 3 | Pi c k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , M a y 1 4 , 2 0 2 0 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m classes, workshops and training to an online plat- form and they are having great results. "We moved quickly to using Zoom and Facebook Live and the wonderful thing is we have local and International students joining us. We can still cre- ate community, offer great instruction and give peo- ple something to look for- ward to in their day. "My team underwent training with myself, and we all just jumped in to this. "The great thing is that we can still serve people, but we are all also looking forward to the day we can welcome people in person. It has meant an adaption in the way we teach, which is fine. It's more that we miss the actual communi- ty and relationships with our students in person," said Shasta Townsend, CEO and creator, Bal- anced Life Yoga. Despite closing its doors during the Covid-19 pandemic, CrossFit Pick- ering is keeping members connected in other ways. The gym now hosts four classes per day via popu- lar video platform Zoom. "We're not just a gym, we're a community," said head coach and owner Marta Blaze. When news hit that gyms would have to shut down, she gave members the choice to stop coming or to continue, but in a dif- ferent way. She lent them equipment so they could exercise at home and join in on the unique platform. The CrossFit training program builds strength and conditioning through varied and challenging workouts. CrossFit Pick- ering has an active mem- bership base, where regu- lars often cheer on and challenge one another. "Zoom is a different world," Blaze said. "The virtual world of coaching is very different. But it's working well." It differs from YouTube workouts because Blaze and the other coaches are still able to communicate with participants. "The Zoom class, you're not only moving, you're sweating, it connects you with your friends," she said. "We find it's some- thing to look forward to every day." CrossFit Pickering also created a virtual scaven- ger hunt, which tasked members to go out each day looking for specific items, snapping photos and uploading them for the chance to win prizes. "People get out there, walking and looking," Blaze said. "We're trying to keep everyone en- gaged." She connects with members via phone and text daily as well. Blaze also hosts Zoom pilates classes through her studio, Pilates Picker- ing. The Boys and Girls Club of Durham, which would normally provide programming to about 700 local kids at 21 locations, is using Zoom and Facebook to offer live workouts, dance classes, trivia, scav- enger hunts, baking and crafts. There's also Club Con- nections, a chance for chil- dren who are members of the Boys and Girls Club of Durham to safely meet up online with staff and friends from their specific program. "During this time, chil- dren are a demographic that is often overlooked. We as adults are going through a difficult time, but how are our children coping?" says executive di- rector Kathleen Hutton. "They can't hug grandma and grandpa, or go see their friends, or play at the playground. This is a way we can help make things as normal as possible." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Our newsroom staff know that people want to keep healthy and active at home during the pandemic and we were curious how mainstay community organizations, like the YMCA, are work- ing to meet that need by offering options that are not only virtual, but also live and interactive. For Ontarians looking to shop in the coming days, here is a list of guide- lines the government has put in place for businesses offering pickups: • For stores receiving an influx of or- ders, it is recommended they plan a pickup route and stagger customers' pickup times. • If employees are placing items in a cus- tomer's vehicle, it is recommended the cus- tomer remains in the vehicle during that time. • It is recommended surfaces that come into contact with items being ordered are cleaned and disinfected regularly. In downtown Whitby, there is some hes- itation from small retailers. "The ones that I have heard from, they're a little bit cautious...about how this is going to roll out. How a curbside pick up is going actually to look," says Karey Anne Large, executive director of the downtown Whitby BIA. Some of the businesses in downtown Whitby don't have a way to list their prod- ucts online, which is a barrier to partici- pating in the new set-up. "A curbside pickup is difficult when people can't pre-shop on an online platform or an e-commerce platform to see what they're offering," Large says. The Downtown Whitby BIA aiming to tackle that problem in the coming weeks with the launch of a virtual "downtown marketplace" where businesses can list their products on a central website — at no extra cost to them. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM Here at last! Mid-May! That magical time of year when every south wind brings birds, and every bird is beautiful. Especial- ly wood-warblers, tiny tropical migrants that come in a dazzling array of colours, sometimes right in your yard. So here's a fun and hope- fully invigorating ques- tion: how many species can you find in your neigh- bourhood? Lois Gillette, president of the Durham Region Field Naturalists, posed that challenge back in April and has already garnered some impressive totals. Thirty different ones in her yard in Osha- wa, for starters. Thirty- four in Otto and Diane Pe- ters's, next to a ravine, and 40 in James Kamstra's ru- ral Port Perry community. And now that midges, fly- ing ants and other insects are hatching out and waves of quick, sharp-eyed birds are arriving to eat them, those numbers could soar. More than two dozen spe- cies of warblers could be possible, each with its own feeding niche and strategy. Black-and-white warblers inch their way along tree limbs, gleaning insects from the bark. Pine warblers for- age among the needles high in the tops of evergreens, trilling to let you — and each other — know they're up there. Ovenbirds walk on the ground, their loud "teacher! teacher! teacher!" calls ringing through the woods, while northern wa- terthrushes strut along the margins of ponds and wet- lands. Canopy, midstory, low branches — all the others have favourite parts of trees and shrubs they pre- fer to feed in — why they're called "wood-warblers." But in migration, arriving weak and weary after a long night's flight, they could drop down anywhere insects are available. Espe- cially right after a front goes through and they had to fight a headwind. So let's take up Lois's in- triguing challenge and see how many we can find. All that's needed are eyes and ears, curiosity and atten- tion, though binoculars are definitely helpful and a field guide or birding app useful for identification. Print off a checklist from the natural- ist club's website, drfn.ca, work on it every time you're out for a walk, and send in your results at the end of the month to: DRFN1955@hot- mail.com. Birds Canada echoed Lois's challenge with their Bird Blitz at Home outreach to students. There's a bird photo guide that can be downloaded from their web- site: birdscanada.org/bird- blitz-at-home, and sightings can be reported at ebird.org/canada/home. Well-known birding hot spots throughout southern Ontario have records of all sorts of exciting rarities found in years past. This stay-at-home spring is a great chance to map out where else warblers and other beautiful songbirds set down around here to shelter and rest before heading on north to breed. Durham nature writer Margaret Carney has more than 4,000 species on her life list of birds, many seen in far-flung corners of our beautiful planet. Nature queries: mcarney@in- terlinks.net or 905-725-2116. WATCH FOR WONDERFUL WARBLERS RETURNING NATURE WRITER MARG CARNEY NOTES THERE ARE MANY VARIETIES MARGARET CARNEY Column LETTERS & COMMENTARY PANDEMIC BEHAVIOURAL 'TRAINING IS OVER,' READER SAYS To the editor: It takes about six weeks of consistent repetition to instil a new command/ trick into a dog's beha- viour. It needs some gentle cor- rections to fortify the prop- er behaviour. Some use lit- tle 'treats' as encourage- ment. It takes about six weeks to make a new behaviour become an ingrained habit. When something is re- peated over and over it can be done without conscious thought after about that same amount of time. How long has it been? Maybe a few more weeks and we'll be properly trained. What we learned at dog training class (really train- er training class) was that many dogs will take their training in stride and be- have beautifully ... until about week five, six or sev- en. This is when some will totally lose it and behave like they've not learned a thing. So, corrections be- come less gentle and more stern because the dogs know what they're sup- posed to do. Training is over; now it's just a matter of compli- ance. Be well, stay safe, stay vigilant. HELGA KOSTIAK, CANNINGTON READER PRAISES FIRST RESPONDERS AS 'GIFTS GIVEN TO US BY GOD' To the editor: First responders. They are heroes and they are special. They are gifts given to us by God. They are differ- ent. They know that dan- ger is present every hour they are on the job. For example, our police: When faced with criminals who often have guns they clear the area of us civil- ians and then they head to- ward the danger. If we are at war our sol- diers will head into the bat- tle knowing full well that there are other soldiers out there trying to kill them. If it's a firefighter they move us to a safe place and then head toward the fire. If it's our doctors and their medical staff they do their best to put us out of harm's way and then they head toward the sickness or disease (ie. COVID-19, an invisible enemy). They all know fear but they will not let it stop them. Even when col- leagues around them fall they keep on fighting until they win. May God bless you men and women who keep us safe. Civilization would not last long without you. May He keep you and your fami- lies safe. It can be extremely tough while in the midst of a pandemic. Holly Stapley is finding out. The Pickering resident has been a nurse at North York General Hospital for 10 years. At the time CO- VID-19 hit, she was work- ing in the Post Anaesthe- sia Care Unit (PACU). When the pandemic took off, Stapley was transferred to the Inten- sive Care Unit. "I worked in the ICU eight years ago, but I quickly realized it wasn't where I wanted to be. It was too stressful," she said. As for being back in the ICU now: "it's not ideal, but I'm happy to help any way I can," Stapley said. In the PACU, she looked after patients who were coming out of surgery, making sure they were waking up, breathing and getting pain medication. Now that she's in the ICU, Stapley noted there's more of a risk of contract- ing COVID-19. "It's crossed my mind." She and her husband Mo have two children — Hannah, 5, and Max, 2. Asked if she's worried about potentially infecting her family, Stapley said, "It's definitely crossed my mind when I was told I'd be on the front line. When I was told I'd be in the ICU, yeah, I did think about it." While on the job, she's wearing protective gear and she wears a mask all day, only taking it off to eat. Everyone is given two masks each day. Before COVID, someone wearing a mask would serve a patient and then throw the mask out. Now, they have to be preserved. "The idea is we try not to contaminate it before we put it back on. I'll take it off, put in on a paper towel, then cover it with another paper towel. Then I'll put it back on," she said. "We try not to contaminate it. "The entire hospital is locked down. Staff come in and go out the same en- trance. They've cancelled elective surgery. The sur- gical units have been con- verted to help with the overflow of COVID pa- tients," Stapley said. Her husband works as a salesperson in IT. "He's trying to work from home. It's going sur- prisingly well," she said. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted almost every aspect of our lives. With non-essential business shuttered or limited to curbside sales, retail flyer advertising has also fallen victim as evidenced by newspapers usually brim- ming with circulars now as thin as our social calendars. While consumers fret about the future of their be- loved retail ad inserts in- dustry experts are optimis- tic. Thornhill resident Rena- ta Richardson is a flyer dev- otee. "I review the grocery and pharmacy ads and sort them by need and seasonal interest," she said. "The fly- ers are the basis for my shopping list and for family and client meal planning." Since the pandemic flyer content has dropped by 75 per cent. As such, she has gone online to favoured re- tailers. "Searching the Internet isn't the same as having a flyer in front of you," she said. "I like to take a physi- cal flyer to the store, espe- cially for price matching. It can be awkward doing that online. "If there are fewer print flyers in the post-pandemic world I'd adjust, but I'd be very disappointed." Aurora banker Alicia Andrus concurs. "I like the convenience of fanning the flyers and looking for the best brands and prices. It's easier than jumping from website to site. I really hope all the fly- ers return. I particularly feel for seniors who can't navigate or access the inter- net." Star Metroland Media retail and flyer sales vice- president Lisa Orpen is bullish on what lies ahead for flyers based on consum- er research. Many like the tactile ex- perience of exploring flyers in large format free from "screen time," she said, add- ing that saving money on weekly shopping gives peo- ple a sense of pride. "It's not all about the deals, it's about discovery of new products. You don't need to leave the comfort of your own home to have a window-shopping experi- ence." COVID-19 has changed retail habits and consumer behaviours, she said. With- in the home improvement category, for example, some retailers have postponed flyers out of concern that curbside pickup can't be ad- equately fulfilled. "That's a precautionary strategy to not disappoint consumers." Consumers remain pas- sionate about flyers and re- tailer analytics confirm the power of the medium, she said. "Simply put, flyers are the strongest driver of store traffic for many retailers. They like the mass reach with the ability to target households according to lo- cation, sales data and demo- graphics including income, age and lifestyle beha- viours. It's no longer spray and pray. In the marketing world, measurement is key." Retailers have a major stake in print and digital ad- vertising yet print will re- main vital, said Steve Acland, president of Geo- media, an analytics-driven geomarketing company fo- cused on consumer beha- viour and media planning and buying. While pandem- ic era flyer volume has dropped for more than 12 million Canadian house- holds, he predicts retailers will reevaluate post CO- VID-19 ad tactics. "There will be changes for weighing print and digi- tal," he said. "Will it be dras- tic? No. The majority of re- tailers will creep back into the new normal, some ac- celerating to digital for some consumer areas." Print flyers will survive based on sophisticated data confirming their effective- ness, Acland said. "Flyers have many posi- tives," he said. "They come to your door. Some consum- ers' financial situations will change post pandemic. They will shop for sales. If retailers stop producing fly- ers it looks like they are abandoning the customer or that they're not open." If Canada suffers a post- pandemic economic down- turn, flyers will endure, said Fusion Retail Analyt- ics president Joe Thacker. "In a recession typically flyer readership goes up," he said. "Having a weekly conversation with your cus- tomer is more important than ever." FLYERS POISED TO MAKE BIG COMEBACK IN POST-PANDEMIC WORLD While consumers fret about the future of their beloved retail ad inserts, industry experts are optimistic. NEILLY, Stephen Kenneth Former Operator of Classic Air Systems (Pickering 1985 - 2020) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 6th, 2020 at the age of 62. Dear husband of Alice for 30 years. Much loved father of Krista, Robbie and Stephen Jr. Dear son of Shirley Neilly (late Kenneth) Private Family graveside service will be held at St. Margaret's in the Pines Cemetery. Doug was born in Beaverton, Ontario on March 16th 1935. He married the love of his life, Stella McDonald (nee Kuzyk) in 1956. Doug and Stella enjoyed sixty-four wonderful years of marriage and together raised their five children; Dale (Michelle), Kelly (John), Lori (Ken), Todd (Bonnie), and Jayne (Gary). Doug was a dedicated family man, and a proud employee of Bell Canada. He spent many years residing in the Guildwood neighborhood of Scarborough while his family was young, and often reflected on his memories of this time in his life very fondly. Doug was a loving grandfather to ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Tracy, Leanne, Ashleigh, Kurtis, Samantha, Lyndsy, Travis, Brooke, Shane, Scott, Bodie, Cameron, Ryder, and Zoey. He was also a devoted uncle and great-uncle. He was a wonderful brother-in-law, friend to many, and brother to Bob (Lynne). He is predeceased by his younger sister, Diane, and his mother, Dorothy. Doug was always present and loved socializing with family and friends more than anything else. With his baseball cap on and some snacks to share, he'd happily travel anywhere—a birthday dinner, a grandchild's soccer game, a trip out west, a BBQ, or a walk at a park—with a smile on his face and an eagerness to be surrounded by the people he loved. And, when family and friends visited Doug, he always welcomed them into his home with open arms, and made sure he waved to them from his balcony when they left. His distinctive laugh, friendly voice, infectious personality and the stories he shared will not soon be forgotten; the McDonald family has suffered a tremendous loss, but will strive to carry on Doug's legacy, and carry his memory for generations to come. It was always evident from the smile on his face that Doug felt most fulfilled when he watched his family gather together; he was so proud, and would often express it. Along with his love for his children and grandchildren, Doug's love for Stella was unmatched; they did everything together. Doug and Stella loved to travel; they enjoyed many winters in Florida, multiple cruises, tropical resorts, and a trip to Europe. When they weren't travelling or visiting family, Doug and Stella could often be found together on the golf course, at the movie theatre, playing cards, and going out to restaurants. Doug was loved by so many, and will be missed terribly. He was an incredibly gentle and generous man, with a great sense of humour. He was a role model, a beacon of light, and an exceptional person altogether. Douglas Murray McDonald was one-of-a-kind, and will never be forgotten. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada. Online condolences may be made at www.newcastlefuneralhome.com SPROUL, Douglas Earl 1930-2020 ___________ Born in Toronto on April 27, 1930, Doug is survived by his two brothers Roy (Ruth) of Wellington County and Bruce (Jim) of Victoria BC, his wife, Evelyn, and predeceased in 1998 by his first wife, Mary Unitt. Doug is also survived by his three children - Cathy (Bob), Peter (Karen) and Sandy (Richard) as well as his two stepdaughters, Heather (Dave) and Deb. He was "grandad" to six grandchildren - Meghan, Erin (Braeden), Alex (Katie), Courtney (Tyler), Sarah (Jordan) and Laura. He was very proud to be a great grandfather to little Rowan. Doug worked most of his professional career as a Service Manager at IBM. In that time he worked at IBM offices in Ottawa, Kingston, Raleigh, NC and Toronto. Doug retired in 1987. Doug was a talented and creative person. He had a large workshop and could build, design and fix just about anything. One of his favourite hobbies was wood carving and his beautiful carvings provide a lasting memory for his family. Doug loved cottage life. Perhaps his favourite pastime was sitting on the deck of his cottage. His children and grandchildren are so fortunate to have this wonderful legacy as a reminder of Doug's ambition and foresight. In his later years with his wife, Evelyn, he travelled extensively across Canada and throughout the world. Cruising and beach holidays were among his favorite winter activities. When not travelling, he pursued his passion of clock making while also discovering new activities of curling, lawn bowling and bridge. Doug passed away peacefully on May 9, 2020 at the age of 90 at the Ajax Pickering Hospital after a short illness. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date, after the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted. Memorial donations may be sent to the charity of your choice. She married a Canadian during the war and in 1947 at the age of 24, emigrated to Canada with two children. Doris and Albert continued to expand their family over the years. She had a busy life both working and raising a family. Widowed in 1986, Doris spent the next 33 years living independently at the St Martins Centre in Pickering. She involved herself in her community and was honoured as "Senior of the Year" for Pickering in 2005. Doris became a familiar face at Tim Horton's in Pickering Town Centre, where after taking the flag bus, (a service that she was instrumental in getting implemented), she would spend several hours on many days of the week visiting with others. Doris is lovingly remembered and will be missed by her seven children, their spouses, her 13 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren, six great-great- grandchildren and innum- erable friends from her very active and rewarding life. A celebration of life will be arranged at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre "Grant a Wish" Program, Royal Canadian Legion: Branch 606 or The Salvation Army are greatly appreciated.
