While physical distancing is the right thing to do to defeat the COVID-19 virus, coming together to support one another is the most important thing we can do to keep our country strong. In these uncertain times, we need each other more than ever before. That’s why we’ve created the RBC Client Relief Program. You’ve had many questions and will have many more as events evolve. We want you to know we are listening, and we’ll provide the support you need, especially if you are in challenging circumstances. First, let me share what we’re doing to relieve some of the day-to-day pressure on your personal finances by: Second, we know many of our clients are facing additional pressure from lost employment, a major disruption in their business or unique family circumstances. Our employees are here to connect with you directly to create a personal plan to relieve the pressure you are facing. This may include reducing credit card interest charges by 50% for clients receiving credit card minimum payment deferrals. If you are experiencing more extreme financial hardship, please book a call with an advisor through our online appointment booking service. Third, for our commercial and small business clients – key engines of the Canadian economy – you can count on RBC to provide immediate relief by enabling payment deferral and temporary limit increases where needed. We are also temporarily waiving setup fees for business client enrollment in electronic cash management and remote cheque processing solutions. We are working closely with government to implement their new programs for business, and our advisors are here to help you. RBC has been serving Canadians for more than 150 years and we’ve seen a lot during that time. The challenges may differ, but the resolve of our employees never wavers. I want to thank all our employees for their compassion and extraordinary dedication during this time. The situation today is very fluid, and as events evolve so will our approach. Local school boards had to move quickly to canvass families and get a sense of how big the need was. After reaching out through phone and email, the Durham District School Board determined that about 5,000 students in the board did not have ac- cess to the technology needed to access online learning, and 500 families did not have internet ac- cess. "While providing tech- nology supports for ap- proximately 5,000 students is a large undertaking, the DDSB is committed to en- suring that every family who requires a device or internet access to partici- pate in distance learning has one," says Norah Marsh, acting director of education for the DDSB. "The staff have rallied to try and accomplish this as quickly as possible, as they recognize that our families are dealing with many stressors and want to as- sist." The Durham Catholic District School Board asked families to respond to an online survey and al- so had teachers and princi- pals reach out to their school communities. That board had 1,948 students without access to technology at home and about 20 households that reported challenges with internet service. Starting this week, the DDSB is deploying Chro- mebooks and internet de- vices to families in need. The board has 100 MiFi de- vices that can be distribut- ed immediately, and is in the process of getting an- other 400. The devices act as por- table Wi-Fi hot spots that allow students to get on- line from anywhere, at no cost to them. "We are prioritizing in- ternet access and resourc- es for Grade 12 students who are graduating as mid- term grades are required to be received by colleges and universities by the end of April," the DDSB said in a statement. "Until we are able to secure internet ac- cess for any additional families, printed materials are being created that will be mailed out." The Catholic board will be distributing 1,630 devic- es such as Chromebooks and iPads, including 338 iPads that can connect to the internet using LTE. The first distribution day is this week — the DCDSB says protocols for handing out devices "have been reviewed and ap- proved" by the health de- partment. ONLINE LEARNING? OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM "How do we celebrate Earth Day?" I moaned to my great gardening friend, Dianne Pazaratz — over the phone, of course. This year no happy groups of children will be picking up litter along trails. No gangs of boister- ous volunteers digging non-native plant invaders out of nature reserves. I'd already phoned a local gar- den centre to ask if they had a sugar maple for sale — just one! — and was told a disappointing no, not even for curbside pickup. How can Earth Day happen without planting a tree? But ask and you shall re- ceive. Scarcely a day had gone by before Dianne emailed me a list of fun ac- tivities she and her chil- dren, Erin and David, had brainstormed, ways to cel- ebrate Earth Day while se- questered at home. It begins with, "Open your door in the morning to hear the birdsong." What a fine start! "Open windows to air out your living space" came next, with a sugges- tion to appreciate how much fresher it is with so many cars off the roads. I took a deep, cleansing breath and smiled. "Welcome the weather, whatever's happening — sunshine, breezes, April rain." I nodded as I read on down the list: "Send a dona- tion to your favourite na- ture organization and thank them for protecting wildlife habitat." We humans need natu- ral areas, too, for our own mental health and to com- bat global warming. Arts and crafts, books, nature games and TV shows ... I found the whole list delightful, especially "Sing nature songs like Itsy Bitsy Spider, Pussywil- lows, Cattails or This Pret- ty Planet. At the top of your lungs!" I went off humming Anne Murray's Don't Dis- turb the Ladybug, my all- time favourite. Dianne also linked me to a recent Friends of Sec- ond Marsh newsletter that listed other good Earth Day celebration possibili- ties, including starting your own compost pile, set- ting up a rain barrel and planting native perennials in your yard for pollina- tors. I was chattering away, telling all these great ideas to my husband, when he made his own suggestion: "Remember all the trees you planted on other Earth Days." I instantly pictured towering spruces where migrating warblers feast on midges each spring. Lush white pines up a creek valley, mulberry trees in a meadow. Oaks, hickories and mountain ash ... How many birds have nested in their branches? "Then plan where we should plant more trees on Earth Days to come," he added. Another act of love and gratitude, to enhance the health and beauty of our very precious Planet Earth. Nature queries: mcar- ney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. Durham nature writer Margaret Carney has more than 4,000 species on her life list of birds, many seen in far-flung corners of our beautiful planet. THERE ARE WAYS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY THIS YEAR NATURE WRITE MARGARET CARNEY GOES LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MARK THE EVENT MARGARET CARNEY Column LETTERS & COMMENTARY SENIOR'S FAITH IN GOD IS THE BASIS OF HER HOPE Re: Jeff Goodall column, Oshawa resident on staying in — and keeping the coro- navirus out, durhamre- gion.com. Jeff Goodall's column was a frank discussion of an elderly person's dilem- ma in coping with the dreaded coronavirus. He ended on a depress- ing note: "all we can do now is hang in there, and do our best." As one who, at 95 years of age, has experienced many troubled times, in- cluding the Great Depres- sion and the Second World War, may I offer a note of hope? There really is a God, the Father of the Lord Je- sus Christ, whose word is available for our comfort. "Because thou hast made the Lord thy habita- tion there shall no evil be- fall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." Hope needs a basis and this has proved mine for all these years. GLADYS CARDY, CLARINGTON AIRLINE WORKERS 'SEEM TO BE FORGOTTEN IN THE NEWSPAPER AND NEWS' A group that seems to be forgotten in the newspaper and news is the airline and airport staff. My husband and I work for a major airline. We have chosen a reduced work schedule. Many have asked us why? We love our job, our work family and bringing Canadians home. We along with many air- port staff put our health at risk every time we put on our uniforms and head out. Please give thanks to the ones who stayed on and to the thousands who were laid off. God bless and keep safe. We will get back to Canadi- ans filling the seats of air- crafts. When, we don't know, but soon. All Frontline Workers! All Frontline Workers! If you've been inter- viewed by me on the phone in the last few weeks, there's a good chance I was doing one of the following while we talked: (a) hiding in a closet (b) gesturing wildly at my kids to be quiet (c) simultaneously try- ing to oversee the making of a bird feeder or some oth- er craft intended to be edu- cational and/or whole- some Working from home isn't new for me — I've done it in one form or another for years. But never with my seven- and four-year- old boys at home 24-7. And, this isn't your nor- mal kids-at-home scenario. This is kids who are stressed and unsure about what is unfolding around them. Kids who are miss- ing their friends and their school and their activities and their neighbourhood playground. Kids who thought some extra time at home was awesome for the first cou- ple of weeks, and are now fed up with crafts and walks and Netflix. Honestly, it's a bit of a "Lord of the Flies" situa- tion over here. Sure, I can set them up with toys and activities and movies to buy myself chunks of time to work. But, as anyone with kids this age knows, you're al- ways teetering on the edge of the next mini-crisis or meltdown. One minute they're painting pictures like an- gels while I start an inter- view thinking, "hey, look at me! I've got this." Then someone, some- how gets paint in their eye or in their mouth or on the cat and it's a code red emer- gency. Instead of screaming "Mom!" when I'm on the phone, they have started frantically whispering it. An improvement, I guess? "Mom? Mom!!!!! He's touching me/looking at me/bothering me/throw- ing things at me. Mom? Did you hear me?" Yes, I heard you. And so did the person I'm on the phone with. But here's the awesome thing. Every single time, that person on the other end of the phone has laughed, commiserated and shared parenting sur- vival tips. Or, they've been the one to apologize while their kids yell in the background or interrupt and I've told them not to worry, we're all in this together. I've been trying to find silver linings to this surre- al experience — like the fact that we're getting to slow down the pace of life and spend more family time together. Another silver lining is that working parents are talking more openly with each other about the im- mense challenges of bal- ancing careers and kids. Even when this pan- demic is over, none of us will have it all figured out. There will still be days that one of the kids is home sick from school and I in- terview someone from the confines of a closet. But after this, I think I'll feel less alone in there. SEVEN TIPS FOR WORKING FROM HOME OPINION A PRO'S GUIDE ON HOW TO STAY PRODUCTIVE DURING CORONAVIRUS VANESSA SOSIAK Column AJAX - Seven players from the Ajax-Pickering area wound up being se- lected in the Ontario Hock- ey League draft on April 4, with two of them playing outside of Durham. The highest Durham resident selected was Pick- ering's Paul Ludwinski, a 5-10, 154-pound centre, who went an impressive fifth overall in the first round to the Kingston Frontenacs. Ludwinski, who played for the powerful Toronto Marlboros organization, turns 16 on April 23. According to a report from OHL Central Scout- ing: "Paul was the leader of his hockey team and al- ways leads by example. He is one of the most explosive skaters in this age group and uses his speed all over the ice. His feet and his mo- tor are always going 100MPH. He is easily one of the hardest workers in this age group. He forechecks hard, finishes his checks all over the ice and doesn't stop until he is off. He was one of his team's offensive leaders, averaging a point a game during the regular season. He was also a mem- ber of Team Canada at the Youth Olympics Games." Another local product who was drafted was Jack Oldham, a right-winger, who stands nearly 5-10 and weighs 150 pounds. The 15- year-old, who doesn't turn 16 until Oct. 13, played for the Mississauga Reps and was chosen 298th overall in the 15th round. Five members of the Ajax-Pickering Raiders were selected in the draft including a pair in the third round with Tnias Mathurin, a defenceman, going 41st overall to the North Bay Battalion. He was followed at 51st overall by right-winger Ryder Mc- Intyre of the Raiders, who went to the Sarnia Sting. Here are the other three Raiders who were selected: 4th Round 72nd overall: Ty Petrou (centre), Ajax-Pickering Raiders, Flint Firebirds 11th Round Alexander Bradshaw (LW) Ajax-Pickering Raid- ers, Erie Otters 15th Round 289th overall: Christian Holden (LW) Ajax-Picker- ing Raiders, Erie Otters. The efforts of everyone in Durham Region to stay home, practice physical distancing and take per- sonal responsibility to stop the spread of CO- VID-19 are critical. At Lakeridge Health, we are extremely grateful for the community's unwa- vering support of our team, which works tire- lessly to provide safe and excellent care. PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 — IT'S UP TO ALL OF US As has been widely re- ported in the media, the pandemic is expected to be with us for weeks and months to come. It is up to all of us to take the neces- sary steps to stem the spread of this virus and to protect family members, friends and neighbours, especially the most vul- nerable among us. Shared safety relies on everyone's commitment to maintain a physical distance of at least six feet (two metres) between ourselves and others, and to only leave home for essential purpos- es. As we head into the first long weekend of spring, many of us will have to dramatically adjust the way we celebrate together. There are many creative ways we can mark the Easter weekend while strictly adhering to physi- cal distancing. If all of us make this temporary sac- rifice, we can protect those we love and the communi- ty at large. People with COVID-19 symptoms, such as a fever, cough or shortness of breath, should immediate- ly contact a primary care physician or the Durham Region Health Depart- ment and complete an on- line COVID-19 assessment form at www.lakeridge- health.on.ca. People who are very ill and need ur- gent medical attention should go to the emergen- cy department — Lake- ridge Health hospitals are committed to providing safe, excellent care when you need it. As the community does its part to combat the pan- demic, Lakeridge Health is also working around the clock to keep patients and our front-line teams safe and to ensure acute care services are there for ev- eryone who requires hos- pitalization or emergency care. Here are the new measures we are taking: NEW VISITOR RESTRIC- TIONS To further protect our patients and care provid- ers, we are currently al- lowing one visitor a day in only three specific situa- tions: pediatric patients (under 16 years of age), women in labour and peo- ple who are at the end of life. To stay connected with loved ones, patients can use bedside phones and use apps or email on their personal devices. We recognize nothing replac- es the physical presence of a loved one, however, these proven measures will keep us all safe. MASKS FOR STAFF AND VISITORS In addition to active screening at all entrances, all team members and visi- tors are provided with a procedural mask upon en- tering any Lakeridge Health facility. Along with physical distancing, these masks protect others from exposure to infection from team members, patients and visitors who may de- velop early symptoms while at our hospitals. UPDATE ON TEMPORARY POSTPONEMENT OF SUR- GERIES AND OTHER SER- VICES Lakeridge Health and hospitals across Ontario have made the difficult de- cision to suspend all non- emergent surgeries as well as other non-emergent clinical services. PREPARING FOR AN IN- CREASE IN HOSPITAL AD- MISSIONS Lakeridge Health has doubled its critical care ca- pacity and opened desig- nated units at Oshawa and Ajax Pickering hospitals to care for seriously ill pa- tients requiring treatment for COVID-19. We are ac- tively planning to expand our capacity, including staffing, equipment and space, in anticipation of a surge in hospitalizations in the coming weeks. HOW TO HELP The global shortage of personal protective equip- ment (PPE) means that La- keridge Health has limited supplies of some items for front-line teams and pa- tients. In addition to care- fully managing our sup- plies, Lakeridge Health is seeking donations of com- mercially produced PPE. Contact covid19giv- ing@lh.ca to arrange a PPE donation and visit our website and click on the "Personal Protective Equipment Needed" but- ton for a list of supplies and drop-off instructions. Lakeridge Health's Foun- dations are also calling for donations to support team wellness and other needs. Thank you again for your incredible support! Married to Elizabeth (Liz) Quinn, the couple celebrated their 60th anniversary on April 9 of this year. Living most of their time in Pickering, Ontario, Ron leaves their two children Ron Quinn Jr., and Diane Quinn. For 25 years, Ron worked in Scarborough for Atlas Polar - but he came to life in his leisure time while riding and racing motorcycles in the dirt and on the ice. The racing spirit continued when he found a passion for sailboats and spent many happy days as a member of Highland Yacht Club. An avid devotee of Karaoke, his other musical talents included learning to play guitar, and most recently taking up the ukulele as part of a weekly gathering in Gananoque, Ontario where he and Liz resided since 2005. Ron loved to putter in the garden, tinker in the garage and to find a bargain - but mostly he loved his wife of 60 years. Ron is survived by his wife Liz, children Ron and Diane, daughter-in-law Susanne, son- in-law Keith, granddaugher Lyndsay. as well as by brothers Ken, Allan, Dennis and sister Sharon and their spouses, also by mother-in-law Doris as well as sister in law Margaret He is predeceased by brother Warren. Ron will be missed by Patricia and Owen and many other friends for his quick wit, and his love of unfinished projects. A special thanks to the health workers at KGH for their care and dedication. A celebration of life will be arranged when the environment allows it. TOFFLEMIRE, Doris M. (nee Abrash) December 5, 1927 - April 5, 2020 ___________ Passed away at age 92 in the company of her faithful caregivers at the Ballycliffe Long Term Care Residence in Ajax Ontario. She had tested positive for COVID-19. Doris was the beloved wife of the late Lyle/"Toff" (1997). She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Avis (Robinson) Abrash, brother Tom (Eleanor), sister Madeline Kent (Art), brother-in-law Ralph and former sister-in-law Avis Freeman. Survived by her two daughters, Nancy Williams (Rod) and Debbie McGregor (Dave). Very proud grand- mother of Aaron Williams (Kimberley), Hollie Newman (Jason), Heather Harmer (Jeff predeceased), Tyler McGregor (Ashley), and Reid McGregor (fiancée Lauren Sauvé). Fondly remembered as Great Gramma Dodo by Isaac and Eva Harmer, Claire and Julia Williams, and Charlie and Thomas McGregor. Also in the hearts of many nieces and nephews. Doris grew up in Windsor Ontario where her Chi Alpha Gamma sorority sisters were among her best and lifelong friends. When Lyle's job at Chrysler moved their family to Ajax in 1966, they were happy to be reunited with the Newitt and Gibson families and many others in their former Windsor circle. After Lyle passed away, Doris joined the Ajax Legion where as an avid card player, she made many new friends. Doris was a knowledgeable sports fan, who also loved "Judge Judy", Matthew McConaughey and all things purple. She enjoyed her art activities at the Nursing Home, signing "DaVinci" to her masterpieces. She always looked forward to her weekly Casino and dinner outings. Due to the current pandemic, there will not be any visitation or funeral at this time. A memorial gathering will be planned in the future. Arrangements entrusted to McEachnie Funeral Home, 905-428-8488. Online condolences may be placed at www.mceachniefuneral.ca BARSZCZEWICZ, Mariette ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ In case you were wondering - COVID 19 did not get Mariette. She was too tough to be done in by it. The time had come, on April 4th, to see her husband Jan after 31 years apart. You see - Mariette was 111 years young!!! When people asked what was her secret to a long life, she would say "I have so much wool left. I need time to knit". Now she has retired her many knitting needles and crochet hooks. Having been such a busy person it wouldn't surprise us if she is taking up new hobbies. Maybe she's going to learn to play the harp & flute in order to join that classical orchestra up above. For those who knew her well it should come as no shock if she decides to volunteer for book-keeping in her new home. Members of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Org. in Oshawa can attest to the fact that they better not be late with their membership fees or Mariette will be after them. Goodbye Mariette!!! You had one H... of a ride! A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to your favourite Charity.
