That can be tough, but there is a way for civilians to make the holidays a lit- tle more festive for members of the Ca- nadian Armed Forces. It's quite simple actually - write them a letter or send them a Christmas card. In fact, the Canadian military en- courages people to write letters to troops. Letters can be written by indi- viduals or in bulk by schools, groups, businesses and associations. It's a chance to let a member of the military know how much people sup- port and honour their sacrifice. Items should be sent to Any Canadi- an Armed Forces Member, P.O. Box 5004 Stn. The service is co-operating with authorities in Pennsylva- nia, where the incident is al- leged to have taken place, police confirmed. "I can confirm we are aware of this incident and that it in- volves one of our police officers, who was off-duty at the time," Durham police spokesman Dave Selby said via email. "Our professional standards branch is now investigating and we will be co-operating fully with the investigation based out of Pittsburgh." Durham police have not identified the officer now under investigation. The man, a coach with the Clarington Flames At- om girls team, was also not named by the woman who first went public with the allega- tions. Vanessa Janzen, the mother of the child involved, posted a video of the alleged incident on YouTube. She said the assistant coach of the Clarington Flames Atom team "punched" her daughter, a player for the Ayr Rockets, in the handshake line in front of the Clarington bench during a tournament Nov. 30. Janzen said she learned the assistant coach was a Durham police officer, but would not name him. The incident occurred at the Pittsburgh Elite Girls Thanks- giving Classic hockey tourna- ment. The Clarington Girls Hockey Association (CGHA) issued a statement on its website, also stating that it is aware of the sit- uation that occurred. "The Ontario Women's Hock- ey Association and Hockey Can- ada are currently investigating the situation. The CGHA orga- nization will support and pro- vide full co-operation with all governing entities to ensure a thorough and transparent pro- cess. "The CGHA will continue to foster a positive and fun hockey experience for all of our mem- bers, which supports growth and development to help our players achieve their personal goals. As always, the CGHA en- sures that all health and safety requirements are met or ex- ceeded in the best interest of our members at all times. We have no further comment at this time." It is believed that the suspect, Kenneth Yu, was arrested for impaired driv- ing hours after the April 20 incident, but that he was released with a court date after providing a false name, Niagara regional police said. Yu, 33, is wanted on weapons charges - includ- ing discharging a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon - after an incident in which a shot was fired in the parking lot of the Sun- downer night club on Lun- dy's Lane in Niagara Falls, police said. No injuries were reported. Police said that within hours of the shooting, OPP stopped a vehicle on High- way 427 near Finch Ave- nue in Toronto. The driver, believed now to be Yu, pro- vided a relative's name to officers, police said. Yu is wanted by OPP for impaired driving and im- personation in relation to that incident. The wanted man is known to have ties throughout the GTA. Any- one with information on his whereabouts is advised to call local police. Dur- ham police can be reached at 905-579-1520. That's according to Re/ Max Durham, noting this is in line with the 2019 market. "The average residen- tial sale price expectation for Durham Region in 2020 is an increase of three per cent, due to a healthy and steady market. Sales prices will continue to increase at a reasonable rate as long as inventory continues to be available in 2020," it noted in a press release. The release added that affordability is a concern for those looking to get into the housing market. "It is anticipated that af- fordability will deteriorate further in 2020 as the pop- ulation continues to grow and more buyers move east to Durham from Toronto. The mortgage stress test prompted more Toronto buyers into the Durham re- gion, which helped level out the loss of first-time buyers who were unable to enter the market in Dur- ham in 2019. First-time ho- mebuyers are expected to be the main market driver in 2020. Communities in high demand will be Bow- manville and Newcastle," the release stated. The Durham Region As- sociation of Realtors re- ported a year-over-year in- crease in sales. There were 872 residential transac- tions in November and that represents a 19.5 per cent increase compared to the same time last year. "The housing market in Durham Region has seen significant year-over-year sales growth in 2019. The number of new listings in Durham for the month of November was down in comparison to the same time last year and this trend is anticipated as we enter the winter market," said Vicki Sweeney, president of the Durham Region Associ- ation of Realtors. "It is en- couraging to see the days on market decrease from 27 days in November 2018 to 23 days this past month." The average selling price also increased, reach- ing $611,872. That tops the average of $590,403 in No- vember of last year. "Durham Region contin- ues to remain an ideal loca- tion for home buyers looking for a variety of housing options and com- munities. As we see the con- tinued sales growth in Dur- ham, it is important to note the supply needs to meet the demand," Sweeney added. Care about /newsletters DURHAM - A man con- victed of animal cruelty for beating his dog by a road- side in Bowmanville in the summer of 2018 has been fined and sentenced to a term of probation. Jonathan Dunbar is al- so prohibited from own- ing or being in the care of pets for two years, accord- ing to the sentence hand- ed down recently by Onta- rio Court Justice Susan Magotiaux. Dunbar, of Mississauga, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal cruelty relating to the incident on July 2, 2018. Magotiaux found him guilty following a trial last summer. Court heard Dunbar was riding his motorcycle behind a car in which his girlfriend, their child and two dogs were travelling when the car pulled over at the Bennett Road ramp on Hwy. 401. Dunbar assault- ed a golden retriever named Buster after learn- ing the dog had jumped over the car seat and scratched the child. Two civilian witnesses testified they saw Dunbar hold the dog off the ground and choke it, then throw it to the ground and punch it, Magotiaux said in a verdict delivered Oct. 11 in Osha- wa. A Durham police officer who responded to a 911 call testified Buster was unable to stand and was having difficulty breathing. Buster was taken to a vet clinic where it was de- termined he had heat stroke, a condition that would be exacerbated by the beating, Magotiaux said. On Dec. 5, the judge fined Dunbar $1,500 and sentenced him to 18 months' probation. He's prohibited from owning or having custody of pets for two years and must per- form 40 hours of communi- ty service, according to in- formation on file at the courthouse. The Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took possession of Buster following Dunbar's 2018 arrest. Four arrested after armed home invasion in Pickering PICKERING — Police have arrested four suspects and are seeking one more after an armed home inva- sion early Monday in Pick- ering. Two residents were as- saulted during the inci- dent, at a residence in the area of Glenanna and Liv- erpool roads around 12:30 a.m. Dec. 9, Durham police said. Five suspects, one of them armed with a sawed- off shotgun, forced their way into the home and or- dered victims to lie on the floor as they stole elec- tronics and personal prop- erty. The suspects fled in a ve- hicle that was soon stopped by police. Three suspects were taken into custody, and officers located a shot- gun nearby. Cops also apprehended one suspect who fled the scene of the robbery on foot, and continue to seek one more suspect. Charges including forc- ible confinement, robbery and weapons offences were laid against the suspects. Three of the people taken into custody are young per- sons from Toronto and Brampton, whose identi- ties are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Also charged was An- thony Jallim, 18, of Bramp- ton. Cops stopped more than 3,000 vehicles during the fifth week of the campaign, administering 108 roadside breath screening tests and charging 13 motorists with drinking and driving. Last year 87 charges had been laid after five weeks. In addition, 13 drivers had their licences suspend- ed for three days after reg- istering warning levels on roadside blood alcohol tests during the week, po- lice said. So far, 69 such suspensions have been im- posed, compared to 85 after five weeks of last year’s campaign. The Festive RIDE cam- paign continues until the new year. But with the skyrocketing price of housing, owning a home has quickly become an unattainable dream, one thatwillneverbearealityforcountlessCanadians. Until now. Enter Trillium Housing, who is tackling theproblemheadon, workingwithdevelopersto build homes at a price point the average family can afford. On top of that, Trillium’s revolutionary approach provides homebuyers with innovative lending solutions that are real game changers for new homebuyers. “What Trillium offers is the kind of creative solutiontheGTAhasbeenlacking for far too long,” observes Trillium Housing partner Joe Deschênes Smith. “It’s the opportunity to own your own home and not likely to have to pay any more than what you would be paying if you were renting - maybe even less.” This week Trillium hopes Pickering and Durham will help pitch in at its next project, The Maxx Urban Towns, as both Councils consider staff recommendations to defer charges until the end of the project. Working together with local government and potential homebuyers,TrilliumHousingismaking2020agreattimefora lot of families to come home. “When Municipalities give us a break on charges and fees – this time letting us pay at the end of the project instead of up-front – we take the financing savings from that and all of it goes to finance more Trillium Mortgages”. Said Deschênes Smith. “This costs government a fraction compared to what they spend on landlord subsidies – often to help families with about the same income.” Trillium bridges the gap between the cost of entry level housing and what a family can manage at their income. The organization partners with mainstream housing developers to develop entry-level product and then helps home buyers with their financing by issuing Trillium Mortgages. What makes the model work is the share equity Trillium Mortgage, a mortgage the non-profit provides payment-free as long as the home is owner-occupied. When the owner sells, they repay the Trillium Mortgage and Trillium also gets its fair share of the home’s appreciated value. It’s truly a WIN-WIN situation. Financing for the Trillium Mortgage is determined by each buyer’s individual needs. If a family makes a $20k down payment along with a $180k bank mortgage and a $100k Trillium mortgage to purchase a $300k home, they only have to make monthly payments on the $180k mortgage until they decide to sell the home. The fact that there’s no need to make any payments on the $100k Trillium Mortgage portion alone translates into reduced monthly payments of $400-500 and thousands of dollars less per year, based on current mortgage rates. So, over a five- year period, the family could end up spending $20- 30k less on mortgage payments. Plus, to protect the purchaser if there’s a drop in the market and they’re forced to sell, Trillium assumes 50 percent of any loss — a bigger proportion than its mortgage investment. “Families want to be connected to their community and most see home ownership as the essential step for that. Housing affordability has neverbeenmoreimportant to ensure the ongoing health and vibrancy of Canada’s cities.” added Deschênes Smith. “We are building truly inclusive communities.” Once Potential homebuyers have qualified for a Trillium Mortgage, theygothrough the normal purchasing process and they own their home just like every other home owner in their neighbourhood. Trillium has a track record on delivering this typeofproject.AtTheLOOPforexample,the62-unit,Midtown Toronto stacked townhome development was Trillium’s first with developer-partner VanMar and Trillium Mortgage financing was available for over half the home buyers. The Region is proposing to construct a 36-meter tower in the City of Pickering at the future Seaton Zone 4 Reservoir and Zone 5 Pumping Station site, located north of Highway No. 7 and west of Sideline 26, as shown in the Key Plan. Key Plan: location of Communication Tower Location The new communication system will improve operations and process monitoring at this remote site resulting in improved operations efficiency, regulatory compliance and response time in the event of an emergency. Telecommunication tower/antenna systems are regulated exclusively by Federal Legislation under the Federal Radiocommunication Act and administered by Industry Canada. Provincial legislation such as the Planning Act,including zoning by-laws, does not apply to these facilities. The City of Pickering is participating in land-use consultation pursuant to Issue 5 of Industry Canada’s CPC 2-0-03. In the case of a dispute between the proponent and the City, a final decision will be made by Industry Canada. And while Colleen Pen- ney, Kyle Blewitt and their children Colton, 10, and Carys, 7, are similar in that regard, they also have ex- tra motivation to head south each September - to shop for Christmas decora- tions as early as possible. The fruits of that labour and so much more are on display at 1286 Haller Ave. in Pickering through to Jan. 3, where passersby can not only gaze in won- der at the results, but also make a donation to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Being big Disney fans, many of the decorations are devoted to characters and movies made famous there, including a new 12x18-foot castle in honour of the recent Frozen 2 re- lease. "All of it has sentimen- tal value to us," Penney ex- plains. "It's something that we've been doing for awhile and every year it grows, and we enjoy it." Penney grew up in Pick- ering, not far from where she lives now, but didn't have enough of a front yard in her starter home in Ajax to do much come Christmas time. When she and Blewitt moved to their current home and started a family 10 years ago, the holiday fun began. With a background in graphic design, Penney draws out most the dis- plays by hand on sheets of plywood, and Blewitt cuts them out with a jigsaw. The painting part is now a full family affair, with their children and nieces helping out enthu- siastically. "They love it, love it," Penney says. "They want all their friends to come. They're just so proud and love being a part of it." Penney estimates they have spent 200 hours put- ting the yard together, a process that starts in the basement in October and slowly takes shape after Halloween. She estimates there are 15,000 to 20,000 lights on display, connect- ed by some 200 extension cords. "Holidays on Haller" is part of the City of Picker- ing's annual Mayor's Light Tour, but has yet to knock off the Williams family at 1285 Ilona Park Rd. for best decorated home honours. "They're legends in the community," Penney ac- knowledges of the peren- nial winners. "I'm grateful because they're in the neighbourhood too, so we get the drive by." Penney says the family does its best to be available during the evening to dis- cuss their display and to accept donations to Sick- Kids, which can also be made to a drop box on the property or online at http://my.sickkidsdona- tions.com/holidayson- haller2019. With $600 already raised through the first full December weekend, she's hoping to have even more than the $1,500 the family brought to the hos- pital last year. "It creates such good awareness for the kids and why we're doing it because it's hard to get them to un- derstand how lucky they are," Penney explains of the annual donation. "It's important to try to teach them how to give back." PICKERING FAMILY DECKS HALLER WITH HANDMADE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@ durhamregion.com 'Holidays on Haller' grows bigger each year and is truly unique as the majority of the display is filled with hand-drawn, handmade characters, games and interactive props crafted by the whole family, mom Colleen Penney, dad Kyle Blewitt, and kids Carys and Colton Blewitt. Their home is at 1286 Haller Ave. in Pickering. Before you do, you should be familiar with the following three things. 1. The local regulations Many municipalities have bylaws regarding wood-burn- ing fireplaces and stoves. Check with the city to make sure you’re allowed to install one in your home. If they’re prohibited, gas, electric and pellet stoves are excellent al- ternatives that may be allowed. 2. Your insurance obliga- tions You must inform your insur- ance company before install- ing any type of permanent aux- iliary heating appliance. Failing to do so could mean you’re not covered in case of a fire. What’s more, many insurance companies may require your unit to have specific safety fea- tures or ask you to perform regular maintenance to contin- ue your coverage. 3. The installation require- ments In order to meet the build- ing code requirements in your area, you need to make sure your fireplace is installed ac- cording to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It’s best to hire a certified professional to ensure that everything is done correctly. Not only will your home conform to local regula- tions, but your family will be safer. By being aware of these things, you’ll be able to enjoy your new fireplace with the knowledge that you’ve done your due diligence to keep your family, home and commu- nity safe. — Newspaper Toolbox 3 things you should know before installing a fireplace 27 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 9 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Limited time offer which may not be combined with certain other offers. Organizers and sup- porters gathered Dec. 12 to celebrate the success of the event, which were held in various locations through- out the region in February. The group surpassed all expectations in their ef- forts to deliver the best Games yet, including ex- ceeding all financial goals. "Durham Region has long been committed to in- clusion and accessibility," John Henry, regional chair and chief executive officer- , said in a press release. "These Games provided us with an opportunity to not only demonstrate that commitment but to grow it as well. And we delivered." Not only did the Games' competitions and other events run smoothly, but the sponsorship and fund- raising target was bettered by more than 250 per cent for a total of almost $218,000 - not including cash contri- butions from the Region of Durham and the Regional Tourism Organization. The legacy fund target of $22,500 was also sur- passed by nearly 500 per cent for a total of $111,900. "I've never been more proud of our community, although I'm not surprised by how fervently our busi- nesses, community organi- zations and volunteers em- braced these Games and the athletes," said co-chair Don Terry. "Our Games or- ganizing committee set ambitious goals intended to continue bettering our community long after our Games ended." The legacy funding will be used to raise awareness, along with opportunities and participation in paras- port and adaptive sport in Durham Region. Committed initiatives include: • Durham Adaptive Sport Collective (which met for the first time in Oc- tober 2019) and working subcommittees. • An online catalogue of adaptive sport opportuni- ties and support available in Durham Region. • A grant program to support youth from lower- income families to partici- pate in parasport, in part- nership with Durham- based not-for-profit Their Opportunity. •A two-year Parasport School Grow It outreach pro- gram delivered in partner- ship with Abilities Centre and the Durham Adaptive Sport Collective, to intro- duce four parasports, which includes instruction and some equipment to 25 to 30 schools in Durham Region. • A new annual Paras- port Festival hosted in Dur- ham Region. • Sledge hockey accessi- bility upgrades for a rink at Iroquois Park Sports Cen- tre in Whitby. ONTARIO PARASPORT GAMES LEAVE BEHIND $111,900 LEGACY FUND Emmy Iheme, John Henry, Lori Talling and Don Terry posed for a photo Dec. 12, as organizers and supporters celebrated the success of the Durham Region 2019 Ontario Parasport Games.
