And yet, it has become very much a worry to him and many others in the city in light of an ap- plication filed by the Pickering Harbour Company proposing to build two, 23-storey towers on the shores of Lake Ontario, just to the east of Frenchman's Bay. Rickard, a 52-year-old resident of the neighbourhood and avid outdoorsman, has started a peti- tion to fight the project and, less than a week in, had already gath- ered more than 1,000 online signa- tures of support. His goal, he says, is to get more than 15,000 before filing it with the City of Pickeringfiling it with the City of Pickeringf in advance of what's expected to be a public meeting to outline the proposal in February or March next year. It's believed thieves are reprogramming factory settings on the vehicles and using newly-programmed keys to execute the thefts, which have occurred in a relatively limited area bordered by Taunton and Kings- ton roads and Church Street to Lake Ridge Road, Durham police said. Between Nov. 6 and 21 five luxury vehicles - mostly Lexus SUVs and one Mercedes CL - were stolen, and none have been recovered, police said. Police are reminding vehicle owners to lock up and remove valuables and, if possi- ble, park in a garage. If that's not possible, po- lice advise parking in a well-lit area, prefera- bly in range of video surveillance. No suspect information is available, but police believe the thieves may be driving a dark-coloured SUV. Anti-immigrant posters put up in Durham DURHAM — There have been two report- ed incidents of anti-immigrant messages and police are looking for the public's help. On Tuesday, Oct. 15, a poster was found on the Memorial Cenotaph in front of the Town- ship of Scugog building on Perry Street in Port Perry. The poster used language that was discriminatory toward immigrants. A similar poster was found on Thursday, Nov. 7, on the doors of the Diane Hamre Rec- reation Centre on Rudell Road in Newcastle, Durham regional police report. Police are not releasing what was said on the posters. The posters look similar and had a similar discriminatory message directed toward immigrants. Investigators believe the incidents could be connected. Anyone with new information is asked to contact Det. Const. Hilliard of the East Divi- sion criminal investigation bureau at 1-888- 579-1520, ext. 1657. Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.dur- hamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. Despite already filling nearly 5,000 "love boxes" to be distributed to hospitals in the first couple of weeks in December, the Megan family of Pickering is still accepting donations for "Santa sacks" to continue helping families with ailing children in and around Durham Region. The idea for the love box- es sprang from the recovery of Sophia Megan, now 9, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age two and has been five years cancer-free. While at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, a custodian brightened So- phia's day with the simple gesture of giving her dollar store Halloween stickers - ultimately inspiring Pro- ject Love Box in 2016, which has seen some 10,000 boxes of goodies delivered to fami- lies dealing with hospital- ized children. Sadly, Sophia's father, Jim died suddenly of lung cancer in September, but it hasn't stopped the family from continuing to spread joy to others. "I know a lot of people said you really should just focus on grieving, but this is what helps me," explained Nicolle Megan, Sophia's mom. "It's giving back to kids. It's just been wonder- ful." The family is looking for donations such as socks, slippers, toothpaste, tooth- brushes, colouring books, pencil crayons, stickers, crafts, dolls, Beanie Boos, playing cards, Hot Wheels, books, magazines, tuques, makeup, journals, dollar store gift cards and the like. Donations will be ac- cepted on or before Satur- day, Nov. 30, when a sorting party will be held at Peace Lutheran Church. Dona- tions can be dropped off that day from noon until 5 p.m. on the lower level of the church. Monetary do- nations can also be made via paypal.me/superso- phiaproject or email trans- fer to ngeorgiev@rog- ers.com. Visit www.thesuperso- phiaproject.ca or www.facebook.com/super- sophiapurple for more in- formation. SUPER SOPHIA PROJECT MOVES OUTSIDE THE BOX TO SPREAD JOY BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durham region.com Sophia Megan ing spaces for residents, visitors and commercial us- es, 200 public parking spac- es, a pedestrian promenade through the site and a pub- lic boardwalk along the wa- terfront. In order to pro- ceed, the applicant would need to purchase a parking lot currently owned by the City of Pickering. Among Rickard's many concerns is what will be- come of the traffic at the dead end of Liverpool, which is already snarled in the summer time. "I've had to actually forgo launching my boat because I simply can't get down to Liverpool Road, and if you get down there, you can't get back out again," says Rick- ard, pointing out that rescue workers were slowed last summer when an Oshawa woman drowned trying to save her son. "To build them (the condos) on a protected watershed at the bottom of Liverpool Road where there's literally no access in or out is insane." Kyle Bentley, director of city development and chief building official for the City of Pickering, says it's very much in the early stages of the process. The Pickering Harbour Company made initial plan amendment and zoning byline amend- ment applications in April, and already a public open house has been held to dis- cuss the proposal. That meeting, which was not required, drew more than 250 residents to the Chestnut Hill Develop- ments Recreation Complex in October. "It's not common to have a public open house, but I think given the scale of the project and what was under- stood to be a lot of interest, I think it was discussed and decided it would be appro- priate to have an unofficial meeting to raise awareness of this project," he explains. "Our goal is to make the pro- cess transparent and open and to let people offer addi- tional comments." Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan was elected for a fifth straight term in October 2018 on a platform that is very much pro develop- ment and economic growth. He is currently overseeing such projects as the new Seaton community in the north, a revitalized city centre, and a casino and en- tertainment complex on Bayly Street. But this project, Rickard argues, is misplaced. "Now, literally you'll have no access as a small boat owner or resident in the community to be able to get out on the lake," says Rickard, who has also start- ed a petition about the blocking of a spit on the west shore of Frenchman's Bay. "I'm on the water a lot, so we kind of appreciate the har- bour and the waterfront and everything else a little bit more than some might, and also protecting it of course." Rickard and others ar- gue the proposed develop- ment would have a negative impact on wildlife and the environment, with the tow- ers being built feet from the banks of a protected migra- tory bird sanctuary and wa- tershed. In order for the proposal to become a reality, the cur- rent nautical village zoning designation would need to change and, even more sig- nificantly, Ontario Power Generation would need to relinquish its exclusionary zoning that prevents devel- opment for safety reasons. That can't be done with- out a process, Bentley says, and he doesn't expect it would be completed at least until the Pickering Nuclear Generation Station shuts down in 2024. "I think at this point in time, it's premature to spec- ulate," he said when asked if he thought the develop- ment project would be ben- eficial to Pickering. "We are still collecting information and that we do conduct a technical analysis. We will certainly consider all the agency comments that feed into the project." Care about /newsletters DURHAM - Durham joined communities around the world Wednes- day in marking the Trans- gender Day of Remem- brance with a flag-raising at police headquarters in Whitby. The Nov. 20 event is an important reminder of the ongoing violence and dis- crimination faced by members of the transgen- der community, Durham Regional Chairman John Henry said. "Seventy-eight per cent of transgender students feel unsafe at school. That is just wrong," said Henry. "Today is a day we can show we can work togeth- er," Henry said. The ceremony - it was attended by police chief Paul Martin, superinten- dent Teresa Hutchinson and other members of the service - was an important gesture for Theodore "Theo" Thomas Dowling, who came out as transgen- der at age 17. "It's really important for me to see there's accep- tance in the community," said Dowling, now 20 and a youth adviser with PFLAG of Durham Re- gion. That said, transgender people face challenges each and every day, said Dowling: "I am still fight- ing for my correct pro- nouns. I am still fighting for people to realize I am human." Dowling said transgen- der youth need the sup- port of the community as they strive to realize their true identities. "I was once a caterpil- lar, and now I am a butter- fly," Dowling said. "I am free, I am happy, and I am transgender." The Transgender Day of Remembrance was es- tablished in 1999 by advo- cate Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honour the mem- ory of Rita Hester, a trans- gender woman murdered in 1998 in Massachusetts. The day was officially recognized by the provin- cial government in Onta- rio in 2017. During a meeting Tues- day, Patrice Barnes asked police Chief Paul Martin if testimony at the trial of two men accused of assaulting Dafonte Miller has resulted in any lessons learned for the police service. Toronto officer Michael Theriault and his brother, Christian, are accused of chasing down Miller, then 19, and beating him in a res- idential neighbourhood in Whitby in December of 2016. Although Miller sus- tained injuries that led to the loss of an eye, Durham officers responding to the incident charged him with criminal offences. In spite of the fact the incident in- volved a police officer, Dur- ham cops did not contact the Special Investigations Unit, which reviews inci- dents of serious injury or death involving police. The charges against Miller were eventually dropped by the Crown. The SIU, which was alerted by Miller's lawyer after the in- cident, laid charges against the Theriaults in the sum- mer of 2017. The case raised issues about police oversight and race that resurfaced at the Theriaults' trial, which ran for 10 days this fall in Osha- wa and has now been ad- journed until the new year. Barnes said during the board's Nov. 19 meeting she's heard from residents who've been following the trial. "I've had some concerns brought forward by mem- bers of the community," she said, asking the chief how revelations in court are being assessed by po- lice brass here. While avoiding offering any opinions about the on- going legal process, Martin said the initial fallout from the case had resulted in policy revisions in Dur- ham. Martin noted that at the time of the incident it was the responsibility of Toron- to police, for whom Mi- chael Theriault works, to make the decision on whether or not to call the SIU. Durham police have now adopted a policy that requires the service to noti- fy the SIU in all instances that meet the agency's mandate, whether the offi- cer involved is a Durham cop or not, Martin said. When an outside police force fails to contact SIU, Durham will ensure notifi- cation is made, he said. "It is the employer of the officer that is supposed to notify the SIU," the chief said. "(But) the expectation of the community is more than that." The chief noted that a complaint filed by Miller with the Office of the Inde- pendent Police Review Di- rector remains active. In addition, Waterloo police are conducting a review of the Toronto police service's handling of the matter. "We will certainly deal with and respect the re- sults of that investigation," Martin said. DURHAM - Hockey teams across Dur- ham Region will fall into line with a new Hockey Canada policy and most other sports in the world by adopting new names for its age groups next season. Divisions will now be designated solely by age, meaning such former names as 'midget' - the most controversial of the cur- rent divisions - will be switched to U18 to en- compass players under the age of 18. The change was initiated by Hockey Canada and its 13 provincial and territorial members and will be implemented nationally for all teams under its umbrella for the 2020-21 sea- son. "We are looking forward to streamlining the names of our divisions and believe it will help make it easier for all families to under- stand in what division their children should be playing," said Ian Taylor, executive direc- tor for the Ontario Minor Hockey Associa- tion, in a statement. "The change aligns with the names used on an international level and simplifies the process of registration." Following is a breakdown of the age groups. Players must be the age, or under, on Dec. 31. Initiation Program, 6 years old and un- der, is now Under-7 (U7); Minor Novice, 7 years old and under, is now Under-8 (U8); Novice, 8 years old and under, is now Un- der-9 (U9); Minor Atom, 9 years old and under, is now Under-10 (U10); Atom, 10 years old and under, is now Un- der-11 (U11); Minor Peewee, 11 years old and under, is now Under-12 (U12); Peewee, 12 years old and under, is now Under-13 (U13); Minor Bantam, 13 years old and under, is now Under-14 (U14); Bantam, 14 years old and under, is now Under-15 (U15); Minor Midget, 15 years old and under, is now Under-16 (U16); Midget, 17 years old and under, is now Under-18 (U18); Juvenile, 20 years old and under, is now Under-21 (U21). The Environmental Compliance Approval for the DYEC currently allows the facility to process up to a maximum of 140,000 tonnes per year of waste. Members of the public, agencies and other interested persons are invited to participate in the planning process by attending public information centres held at several stages throughout the process. From there it's taken off. Danford started the channel by posting videos of interviews she did. But her subscribers didn't want interviews, she said. "The wanted to see me in action with my family. They wanted to see how we operated as a family. From that, it just took off and be- came a Bell show," she stated. Auntie Jillian can be seen on Bell On Demand. It's the first black reality TV show in Canada, she said. "I've lived here most of my life. I'm really Canadian, but we don't forget about our roots. We have Ca- nadian children. Everything we do is relatable," she noted. Danford is from Trinidad, while her husband Warren is from Jamaica. Also appearing on the TV show are son Myles and daughter Mi- lan. Filming for the second season is underway after what Danford describes as a "successful season one. We had 22,000 watch a week." On this day, they are filming a Christmas special. Danford said people watch the show and go "'Oh my God, that happened to us. That happened to us yesterday. We don't want to talk about it.' Well, we talk about it." Danford has a slogan It's a Real Ting and it's taken on a life of its own. It's the name of her website and can be found at www.itsareal- ting.com. While she appears on the TV show, daughter Milan doesn't con- sider herself a star. "It's nice, but I'm uncomfort- able in certain situations," she said. Myles is the same. "I don't like to be the centre of attention. If someone brings it up, I'm OK to talk about it, but I'll nev- er be the one to bring up what I do," Myles stated. Statistics Canada reports that as many as 40 per cent of adults ages 20 to 79, or about nine million people in this country, have at least some hearing loss in one or both ears. An estimated 4.9 million Canadians in that same age range, or 19 per cent, have hearing loss that affects their ability to hear normal speech. Among children and youth ages 6 to 19, some 8 per cent had some hearing loss, while 4 per cent of children ages 3 to 5 showed test responses indicative of potential hearing loss. Most alarming is the fact that approxi- mately 77 per cent of adults with hearing loss diagnosed by a health-care professional were unable or unwilling to recognize they had a hearing deficit. HearingLife chief audiologist Jill Price attrib- utes the contradiction to social factors.“It’s an invisible disease,”she says.“You can’t see it and you can’t feel it.”This makes it easy to forget that it’s even a problem —or to simply pretend that it isn’t one. There are cultural stigmas attached to hear- ing loss that keep people from acknowledging they have a problem or seeking help for it, Price notes.“People associate hearing loss with being old,”she says.“We’ve all seen sitcoms where a grandfather says something silly or funny be- cause he misheard what someone was saying, and then everybody laughs.” Between the social stigma and lack of acknowledgement, something little understood among the public is the fact that hearing loss may be elevating other health risks. For instance, there is a statistically signifi- cant association between hearing loss and de- pression, according to a 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Associa- tion Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. The study found that 11 per cent of people with hearing loss showed symptoms of depression, compared to 5 per cent of people who did not have hearing loss. Similarly, people with diabetes are about twice as likely to develop hearing loss, Price says. There has also been some correlation reported between hearing loss and dementia or cognitive ability, but researchers caution more work needs to be done in this area before anything definitive can be said about this link. And certain types of hearing loss can also be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease. When blood flow to the inner ear is impaired, it can affect hearing, which makes a diagnosis a possible early warning sign of serious and even potentially fatal illnesses. It’s all the more reason to have your hearing checked out. You can get a free hearing test at one of over 220 HearingLife locations across Canada by calling toll-free 1-844-226-2302.
