At approximately 5 a.m. on Aug. 20, Durham police officers stopped a blue Ford SUV that had been travel- ling north on Whites Road as they saw it turn right on the red light at Taunton Road without stopping. Police report the officer detected the smell of alco- hol on the driver and no- ticed beer and wine in the vehicle. A 17-year-old girl was in the passenger seat. Police say both argued and when officers reached in to prevent the vehicle from moving, the two phys- ically resisted. When a breath sample was de- manded, police say the ve- hicle sped away. The pursuit led to a dead-end street and one of- ficer had to jump back into the cruiser to avoid being struck. The driver hit the police car, left the area and the pursuit was ended as speeds exceeded 100 km/h. Around 5:45 a.m., offi- cers arrested the driver and passenger as they were walking on Valley Farm Road. The vehicle was found abandoned and its license plates had been removed. Police located a black sweater containing two li- cense plates for the vehicle plus other items, including the car keys and a small quantity of marijuana. Micah Berry of Picker- ing faces charges including assaulting a peace officer; assault with intent to resist arrest; dangerous opera- tion of a motor vehicle aqnd assault with a weapon. He was held for a bail hearing. The girl, who was not identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with assaulting a peace officer and later re- leased on a promise to ap- pear. Durham Region's health department is launching the free, interactive online prenatal classes to provide information covering the different stages of parent- ing, including pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, new- born care and community resources. "Whether you are a first- time parent, supporting someone who is pregnant or looking for a refresher, the classes are a flexible way to learn more about pregnancy and parenting," Kelly Pigeau, a public health nurse with the health department, said. "These classes can help de- crease fears around labour and birth, help partners feel involved, help prepare for bringing baby home and help families make in- formed decisions." The online classes are offered in a mobile-friendly format to help users access them using any device, any- where that internet is avail- able. "These online classes are a great addition to the supports and resources the Health Department already provides for expectant fam- ilies. By offering these clas- ses, our goal is to provide families with multiple op- tions for learning that best suits their schedules and lifestyles," Pigeau added. COMMUNITY FREE ONLINE CLASSES FOR DURHAM PARENTS DURHAM - A local mid- wifery practice is getting a financial boost. Whitby MPP Lorne Coe made a funding announce- ment July 8, of an additional $370,730 this year to support Community Care Mid- wives. The Oshawa-based clinic provides services in Dur- ham and Northumberland. The funding announce- ment is part of an additional $28 million from the prov- ince for midwifery services across Ontario, bringing to- tal spending this year to $178 million. Midwives provide prima- ry care to women with low- risk pregnancies and offer a choice of birth location - at home or at the hospital. There is no out-of-pocket cost for patients; midwifery services are covered by the province. Midwives offer complete prenatal care - including blood tests, ultrasounds and genetic screening - as well as six weeks of postpartum care for the mother and newborn. The province is also working to expand the scope of practice for mid- wives, to allow them to pre- scribe more medications. Funding will also ex- pand Indigenous midwifery programs and support a Mount Sinai Academic Family Health Team pilot program to ensure patients receive ongoing midwifery care. Parents are faced with finding something picky eaters will eat, that's somewhat nutritious. Something kids can wolf down in the 20 to 30 minute window most schools offer for eating. Something not too messy, ideal- ly litterless and nut-free. Something that doesn't get sog- gy. Something not too expensive that doesn't take ages to prepare. In Ontario, the 2019-20 school year is required to have a mini- mum of 194 school days. That's 194 lunches to pack - more for parents who also pack lunches for kids attending camps on PA days and school breaks. Is the thought of it all making you want to lose your lunch? We asked local parents to share their best tips and tricks, great food finds and favourite lunch packing gear. Michelle Saito, Ajax Packs lunch for: Son, 5, and daughter, 7 Lunch packing hack: My kids don't like sandwiches and they don't like taking a thermos. I make homemade muffins or quick breads in big batches on a week- end and freeze them. You can make them more filling by making savoury muffins with cheese, or adding protein powder to fruit muffins. They're perfect for lunch- es, I just add some fruit and yogurt. Best lunch box food finds: Presidents Choice mini blueberry bagels, raisins in Paw Patrol box- es, Wonder+Well drinking boxes (water with a splash of organic fruit juice) Gayani Seneviratne, Pickering Packs lunch for: Sons, 6, and 10 Lunch packing hack: Plan- ning dinners that make good lunch leftovers. Things like soup or curry that goes in a thermos, or meat that is sliced up and put on a sandwich. Best lunch box food finds: Ba- rilla microwave pasta! I just dis- covered this at the end of the school year, it takes 60 seconds to make in the morning. I just add some sauce and put in the ther- mos. It's perfect for days where I don't have dinner leftovers but still want to send a hot lunch. Favourite lunch gear:Fun- tainer thermos and Contigo ther- mos -- they're both not very expen- sive and keep food hot until lunch. "There was a woman who had come in saying there were some injured people outside, so Jerry being an emerg nurse, he turns to me and said I'm going to go out there," said Kane. "I thought be- cause I have some basic life saving skills as well, I should go too." She said they thought it would be safe because they didn't hear any further scream or shots. "I had taken one, maybe two steps outside the restaurant and the shooter was directly across the street and he didn't take any time to open fire on me and I was shot in the middle of the side of my chest and that shattered my T11 vertebrae and I was paralyzed im- mediately, my legs buckled under me and I fell." Kane was taken to St. Michael's hospital, where she underwent surgery and was put into a medi- cally-induced coma. "I was just happy to be alive, I thought this could be it, I thought this could be the end of my story and I felt before I went under, I was like this is not over, I want to fight." She spent six weeks at St. Mi- chael's hospital before moving to Toronto Rehab for two months, where she underwent occupation- al therapy, physiotherapy and worked with a social worker and psychologist. The basement apartment she shared with Pinksen was inacces- sible and the couple moved to a condo in Toronto. Kane continued her rehab on an outpatient basis. But finding an accessible rent- al unit was difficult and they weren't able to adequately modify a non-accessible unit so they looked at purchasing a house that could be set up to accommodate Kane's needs. In May they purchased a bun- galow on Christie Avenue in Osha- wa, aided by the donations the couple received in the wake of the shooting. But when they looked at hiring a contractor to renovate the space, the quotes were massive numbers said Kane. That's when Pinksen found Pickering's Frank McGillan from Franmac Construction/Decks R Us, who promised to undercut any quote from other contractors and committed to doing everything he could, including source donated material and discounted or donat- ed work from contractors. "Frank was so warm and gen- erous once he heard the story," said Kane. To make the 1920s bungalow wheelchair accessible the bath- room needed to be completely re- constructed, including moving a wall, and the floors in the house had to be levelled out. The doorways also needed to be widened and a staircase to the basement had to also had to be widened so a chair lift could be added. McGillan and a group of volun- teers are also organizing a fund- raiser called "Durham Region Adopts Danielle Kane." It will be held at the Annandale Golf and Curling Club, 221 Church St. S. Ajax, on Sept. 7 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. "The main purpose of the fund- raiser is to get a kitchen and finish off things that we weren't able to do," said McGillan. The Pickering contractor re- ceived donations of materials from Postech Durham and Centu- ry Mill Lumber in Stouffville and McGillan is donating labour and materials as well. He said he's hoping that the fundraiser is a success and other donors step up so that the scope of the renovations can be increased. McGillan hopes to make the kitch- en accessible as well and would welcome donations of kitchen and bathroom material. McGillan has done similar work for families in tough situa- tions. "I try to donate as many of the ramps as I can if the sources help but I can't do them all," he said. Pinksen said by making the home accessible it becomes a sanctuary for Kane. "It's hard enough when she goes outside and struggles with everything, the sidewalks and parking spots and coming home you just want to relax and not have to think, but then you come home and you have to worry about navigating your own house ... it's a bit daunting, that's why we were so grateful when we met Frank." Kane struggles with chronic pain and will for the rest of her life, but she's hoping to return to nursing school in January. The couple says they're hoping to give back to their new commu- nity as soon as they can and an ac- cessible home means Pinksen can go back to work too. "Hopefully we can contribute the same way Frank and his friends have contributed to us," said Pinksen. Both say they feel welcomed by the community in Oshawa and Durham. "I feel at home here, really, I feel like it's our new home," said Kane. "Both in the health-care profes- sion, we know we can do a lot of good here too," added Pinksen. Fundraiser tickets are avail- able daniellepkane@gmail.com or call McGillan at 416-788-0295. Anyone who donates $45 to the Go- FundMe campaign "Help Dani Make Her Home Accessible" will be added to the guest list. COMMUNITY Continued from page 3 FUNDRAISER BEING HELD IN AJAX THE ISSUE: DANIELLE KANE WAS PARALYZED FROM THE WAIST DOWN FOLLOWING THE DANFORTH SHOOTING LAST YEAR AND NEEDS ACCESSIBILITY RENOVATIONS TO HER NEW HOME. LOCAL IMPACT: WHEN KANE AND HER PARTNER BOUGHT A HOUSE IN OSHAWA, THE DURHAM COMMUNITY LED BY PICKERING CONTRACTOR FRANK MCGILLAN RALLIED TO MAKE THE RENO HAPPEN. STORY BEHIND THE STORY Danielle Kane and her partner Jerry Pinksen showed us around their new home in Oshawa where contractor Frank McGillan was hard at work making the bungalow accessible. Because there's a hard cap on compensation for victims of crime, the community is making up the difference to ensure Kane's new home is as accessible as possible. They're the talk of the town, according to Dianne Pazaratz, caretaker of the butterfly gar- den on Rossland Road in Osha- wa, as well as her own magnifi- cent flower and veggie-filled backyard. Japanese beetles seem extra prolific throughout Durham this summer, and a hot topic for gardeners as these glossy green- headed, coppery-winged insects chew leaves into lacy patterns and bite into blossoms. Pazaratz's been dealing with the Japanese beetle scourge for several summers now - shaking them off favourite plants into soapy water throughout July and August, the hands-on way to lessen the impact of these vora- cious non-native insects. So have Derek Gillette and Mike McEvoy, in a bid to control the destruction in their own lovely gardens. Marlene Shay of Whit- by is trying out a specially de- signed Japanese beetle trap, which she says attracts great numbers. But researchers at universities throughout North America are finding that the pheromones draw in lots more beetles than they actually catch, making local conditions worse than ever. I was first curious, then alarmed, to notice chewed leaves in my zinnia patch just as these glorious colourful flow- ers, beloved by butterflies, start- ed to bloom two weeks ago. Sud- denly everything I'd heard about the Japanese beetle and been blithely ignoring became personal. After squirting dish soap into a plastic container of water, I climbed over our chicken wire bunny fence and started cir- cling the shoulder-high zinnias, scanning for the distinctive oval, centimetre-long beetles. And knocked at least a dozen in- to the drink by the time I was done. Plus eight more three days later, the next chance I had to go beetle hunting. "Peanuts!" I was told by my gardening friends, who say they bag a hundred a day at peak season. Japanese beetles accidental- ly arrived in New Jersey in 1916 in soil around iris bulbs, and have been spreading through- out North America ever since. They were first noticed in Cana- da in 1934, coming to Nova Scotia by ferry on a tourist's car from Maine. They feed on some 200 species of trees, shrubs, crops and flowers as winged adults, spending the rest of the year un- derground as C-shaped white grubs, eating the roots of grass- es and earning the ire of lawn- loving homeowners. Now set to enter his sec- ond season in the league, Robinson will swap the red, white and blue of the Generals for the red, white and black of the Ottawa 67's following a trade con- summated between the two East Division rivals Aug. 23. After a 34-game rookie season - in which he was hampered by injury - gen- eral manager Roger Hunt granted Robinson's re- quest for a trade. The 17- year-old forward was shipped to the nation's cap- ital for two second-round draft picks and a third that is conditional on his perfor- mance level. The parting seems to be on good terms. "I had a tough year last year with injuries and stuff so I kind of just wanted a fresh start and start over again," Robinson ex- plained. "It wasn't a bad experi- ence. It's a great organiza- tion, they do a lot for every- one. It's just that I didn't get the exposure I wanted, es- pecially with the injuries I had and missing a lot of games, so I just wanted a new start and new team." Robinson injured his hip during training camp and struggled with it all season, ultimately opting for surgery after putting up just 2-5-7 stats through Feb. 18. He came to the team as the 28th overall pick in 2018 after scoring 29 goals and 84 points in 55 games with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, and being named tourna- ment MVP after leading the team to an OHL Cup ti- tle. "He's going to be a good player without a doubt," said Hunt, who expects a logjam at forward this sea- son and was happy to get the draft picks in return. "Like we try and conduct our business, we hope it works out for both and cer- tainly Ottawa is a pretty good destination in our league." After meeting in the Eastern Conference final last season - Ottawa won in a sweep before losing in the OHL final to the Guelph Storm - the Generals and 67's will meet eight times this season and likely be fierce rivals once again. Despite knowing that, Hunt wasn't shy about dealing with his counter- part, James Boyd. "At the end of the day, my job is do what's best for the team and I don't think you should limit your trad- ing partners," Hunt ex- plained. "I've never really worried about the other 19 teams, I've just worried about the one." With both teams set to start training camp this week, Hunt and Robinson were relieved the situation didn't linger. Robinson will enter his NHL draft-eligible year with a team that returned eight forwards from last season and added three in the 2019 draft, including Brenden Sirizzotti and Thomas Johnston from the Whitby Wildcats minor midget team. "I'm older, bigger and stronger, so I think I can play a bigger role there," Robinson said. "My expec- tations for this season is just to do as much as I can, work out, get stronger and looking to the NHL draft obviously and wanting to get picked off of having a good year with the team and going far. If we go far, the scouts look at you more." GENERALS NOT THE DREAM DESTINATION ROBINSON IMAGINED Following an injury-marred rookie season in the OHL, Pickering's Dylan Robinson was traded by the Oshawa Generals to the Ottawa 67's. Photo by Terry Wilson / OHL Images BRIAN MCNAIR bmcnair@durham region.com OHL FORWARD SHIPPED TO OTTAWA 67'S AFTER INJURY-MARRED ROOKIE SEASON IN OHL One of my favourite quotes of all has been attri- buted to a couple of authors in its variations, but the version that I love best is from hall-of-fame baseball legend Tommy Lasorda. It goes like this: "In base- ball and in life there are three types of people. There are those who make it happen. There are those who watch it happen. And there are those who won- der what the hell just hap- pened." As the summer winds down and the anticipation of another fall/winter sport season begins, it is a good time to reflect (there's that damn mirror again) on what your goals are and what decisions you make on a daily basis that are consistent with those goals. At the end of the day, no- body just wakes up and is successful. Success, excel- lence, greatness - call it what you will - none of it comes without a price. Learning how to be a fear- less and confident warrior in the face of so much nega- tivity and all the naysayers is a requisite for greatness. And none of this hap- pens without action. You see, I don't ever buy into the bull excrement ar- gument about those indi- viduals and teams who "want it more." Hell, if you ask 100 people if they want a million dollars I guaran- tee that 100 per cent of them would all answer yes. But I bet you that less than 1 per cent of them are willing to take action and pay the ev- eryday price to actually earn that million. And while this is really for a later discussion, whenever an entire team comes up flat and under- performs, that has nothing to do with the other team "wanting it more." Rather, that has everything to do with poor coaching. As Zig Ziglar states with regards to achieving suc- cess, "you gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you have to stop and look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do." And as Tommy Lasorda also states: "The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination." If you really want to be great then wipe your tears, punch your excuses in the face, pull up your big boy or big girl pants and get out there and own the day. Ev- ery day. If not, just get out the hell out of the way so that you don't get run over by all the hard chargers of the world who are making it happen. So, what kind of an ath- lete are you? Till next time, remem- ber "you can't fake strong!" It’s important that hosts take steps to ensure guests who consume alcohol do not drink in excess and make it home safely. • Encourage guests to take cabs or ridesharing services to and from the party. Include contact information for local taxi companies on the party invitations. Doing so will get guests thinking about transportation in advance, which may reduce the likeli- hood that they will drive themselves. • Enlist designated drivers. Some guests may plan to abstain from alcohol, and hosts can ask such guests to serve as designated drivers. In addition, hosts should abstain from alcohol so they can drive guests home if any guests have had too much to drink. • Plan activities that do not involve drinking. Hosts can plan games or activities that do not involve alcohol so guests do not feel pressured to drink too much. Such games can make parties more fun and memo- rable and give guests something to do besides mingle and drink alcohol. • Get creative with nonalcoholic beverages. Hosts can also have some fun by serving some “mocktails,” which mimic alcoholic beverages without the alcohol. • Serve ample amounts of food. Try to avoid serving salty foods like pretzels and potato chips. Salt makes people thirsty, and that might compel some guests to drink more alcohol than they intended. • Have guest rooms ready. Guests coming from far away who drove themselves may not want to pay for cabs. Hosting can be fun, but hosts must prioritize the safety of their guests when serving alcohol. DURHAM - Durham's school boards are finally able to request funding for new schools, after the pro- gram was frozen for more than a year. The province has asked school boards to submit funding requests for large- scale projects such as new school builds, repairs and renovations to existing schools and the creation of new child care spaces. The Ford government has pledged to spend $13 bil- lion over the next 10 years. NDP education critic Marit Stiles criticized that amount as a $3-billion cut compared with what the Liberal government com- mitted over the same time period. School boards have until Sept. 30 to submit projects for the capital priorities program. Projects have to be completed and open no later than the 2023-24 school year. Officials with the Dur- ham District School Board and Durham Catholic Dis- trict School Board declined to comment on the projects they plan to submit, until after trustees discuss the issue in September. Here's what we know about the new school builds that are likely to be requested in Durham. Durham District School Board •The DDSB has previ- ously made multiple fund- ing requests for a new high school in north Oshawa at Bridle Road and Winches- ter Road. Christine Nance- kivell, the DDSB's chief fa- cilities officer, said in a pre- vious interview that this is one of the areas with the "greatest enrolment pres- sure." •Parents in Pickering have been pushing for years for a new school in the Duffin Heights area, raising concerns that Val- ley View Public School is overcrowded. The project wasn't submitted in 2017, because the future school site wasn't available to the school board yet. Officials said in 2017 that the project would likely be included in the next round of submissi- ons. Durham Catholic District School Board •The Catholic board's long-term accommodation plan lists three projects that will potentially be sub- mitted for funding in 2019 - a new elementary school in the Seaton community in Pickering, a replacement for Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School in Oshawa and a new high school in Brooklin. •The 2019-2023 long- term accommodation plan says the goal is to open a new 611-student elementa- ry school in Seaton in 2021. The proposed school would also include a child care and family centre. •The proposed north Oshawa high school, tenta- tively slated to opened in 2022, would be a replace- ment for Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School. In a previous inter- view, DCDSB Supt. Bob Ca- mozzi says the Dwyer re- quest is unique, because the board is looking to keep the school community in- tact, but move it to north Oshawa. He said Dwyer's current location, near Rossland Road and Steven- son Road, made sense when it opened in 1963 - but not to- day. "Back in '63 that would have been kind of the heart of Oshawa," Camozzi said. "Now, most of our elemen- tary schools are in north Oshawa where the growth area is." In September 2017, the DCDSB submitted a funding request for the north Oshawa high school, proposing a 1,200 student, Grade 7 to 12 school. •The board's accommo- dation plan says a new high school in Brooklin is also tentatively slated for a 2022 opening. •Down the road, the DCDSB is also looking to build a second elementary school and a high school in Seaton, as well as a new ele- mentary school in north- east Oshawa. A new 68-bed residence is opening in late August, a nod to continuing growth at the Whitby site. The residence will be at full capacity when school starts. It's the first time the college has had a residence anywhere other than its Oshawa campus. Durham College presi- dent Don Lovisa says it's a needed amenity - there isn't much housing near the Whitby campus and many students don't have cars. "It changes the nature of the campus," he says, ex- plaining that having stu- dents living on-site will generate more activity and require after-hours access to some areas. While there isn't much housing nearby, Lovisa says students living in resi- dence will have "good wal- kability" to nearby restau- rants and entertainment, including Whitby Enter- tainment Centrum. The four-storey resi- dence will be managed by Campus Living Centres, which oversees the three residence buildings on the Oshawa campus. Each suite includes two private bedrooms, a kitch- enette and washroom. Two floors feature full kitchens, and the other two offer common areas for studying and socializing. For those who want to buy food on campus, "we will be trying to make stu- dents aware of the Pantry," Lovisa says, referencing the retail store in the Cen- tre for Food, which sells baked good, packaged soups, meals-to-go and of- fers student-friendly week- ly specials. Lovisa says the college is considering adding a sec- ond residence on the Whit- by campus. Work is also expected to start this fall on a 60,000- square-foot expansion to the east and north side of the main building. The project will house a new shop, classroom and student spaces and allow the college to expand its trades program by 750 stu- dents. The Whitby campus marked its 25th anniversa- ry in December 2018. Once a Cadbury choco- late factory, DC purchased the property on Cham- plain Road in 1992 and be- gan the process of turning it into a training facility, fo- cused primarily on skilled trades. Doors opened to welcome the first group of students in 1993. Lovisa says there are no plans to expand the resi- dence at Durham College's Oshawa campus.
