"We are no longer a bedroom community." A casino is now under construction at the Dur- ham Live site at Church and Bayly streets, and is expected to be open in the first quarter of 2020. It will be followed by a shopping and dining district and a film studio, and will also include a hotel, a market district and a sports and entertainment district. Mayor Dave Ryan called it "an extremely exciting project" that will bring 10,000 jobs to the commu- nity. Along the Kingston Road corridor, the city is working with developers to intensify sites, said Ja- doon. At Whites Road, the city wants a "vibrant look" as a gateway to Pickering, and expects a condo devel- opment at Liverpool Road. An intensification study of Kingston Road is current- ly underway. Universal City, a resi- dential condo project by Chestnut Hill Develop- ments at Bayly Street and Liverpool Road, will even- tually include five build- ings with a mix of residen- tial and commercial space, said Jadoon. "We're very ex- cited about this building." The second tower of the project is expected this fall. Pickering's city centre "will look completely dif- ferent in five years," said Jadoon, who outlined the city's plan to build an arts centre, a combined se- niors' and youth centre, a new library and condo towers. A new seniors' res- idential building by Amica is expected to be open by the summer of 2021. The city is also working with Cushman Wakefield, man- agement of the Pickering Town Centre, to redevelop the central core as the Sears wing of the mall is taken down. Residential intensifica- tion downtown will house 10,000 residents, said May- or Ryan. "You're going to see a downtown where we've never had a down- town." The Duffin Heights neighbourhood will bring "unique and high density" residential growth to Brock Road, said Jadoon. A retail development of 110,000 square feet is un- der construction and La- keridge Health will open an ambulatory clinic in the neighbourhood, he said. T he Seaton community will eventually be home to 70,000 residents and will offer 30,000 to 35,000 jobs, said Jadoon. Many people have moved into the com- munity already, he said. The 800-acre Innova- tion Corridor along High- way 407 will be home to Ku- bota Canada's new head- quarters, and the city's priority is to attract high- tech industries with good- paying jobs to the corridor, said Jadoon. "Our No. 1 priority is to make sure businesses bring jobs," he said of the corridor. The group attending the symposium was also shown a short video promoting the need for an airport in Pick- ering, featuring comments made by speakers during an April luncheon hosted by the Toronto Region Board of Trade. Care about /newsletters AJAX - Mayor Shaun Collier was fined $13,000 by the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA) of Canada for altering client documents between 2006 and 2017. The MFDA noted in its ruling, "There is no evi- dence that the respondent received any benefit from the conduct ... beyond the commissions or fees he would ordinarily be enti- tled to receive had the transactions been carried out in the proper manner. "There is no evidence of client loss or lack of autho- rization for the underlying transactions," the ruling added. He was also required to pay $2,500 in costs. Collier said in an inter- view the alterations he made were done with his clients' consent and were minor in nature, such as checking a box and not hav- ing a client initial the change. In a statement, he added, "During a routine branch audit of my office in 2017, transactions were found not to be carried out in the proper manner. Through- out the investigative pro- cess, I worked co-operative- ly with the MFDA, and at no time was my licence ever suspended. Further, I was free to operate my business without restriction. "The settlement makes clear that there was no fi- nancial benefit from the conduct, no client loss or lack of authorization for the transactions. All clients were interviewed and all re- mained my clients after the audit findings. In the 21 years I practised, there was never a complaint or any in- fractions. "By entering into this agreement, I saved the MFDA the time, resources, and expenses associated with conducting a full hear- ing," Collier noted in his statement. The association made changes to its regulations in 2015 and most of the charges against him were dated before the changes, Collier said in an interview. "Did I gain? No. I was act- ing on a client's instructions in every case. It was in the cli- ent's interest. I remained with the clients," Collier said. "The fine has been paid, the case is closed, move on." He worked as a mutual fund salesperson for Canfin Magellan Investments Inc. from November 2000 until he resigned in December of last year. As a "politically exposed domestic person," he couldn't continue to sell mutual funds as the mayor. Collier was elected may- or in October of last year and was sworn-in in early December. "I don't have my licence today because of the job," Collier said. In the MFDA ruling, it noted Canfin contacted all of Collier's clients to see if he had engaged in any un- authorized trading. "No clients reported any concerns," the ruling stat- ed. "I've underwent many audits," Collier said. "In 20 years, I've never had a com- plaint." The ruling noted in two instances, Collier cut and pasted a client's signature from a previous account form onto a new form. Dingwall said he's run- ning for the Conservative party "primarily when I think of my two teenage boys and wanting to make sure they have a bright fu- ture. I see the mistakes that are being made right now. We have to make changes so their future isn't com- promised." It will be the second time Dingwall has run for office. He ran for the position of re- gional chair in the munici- pal election last fall and fin- ished second to John Hen- ry. He garnered about 20 per cent of the vote. "This (running federal- ly) wasn't on my radar last year, quite frankly. I don't like to sit on the sidelines and I felt it was time to step up," Dingwall said. He said he has a lot of support from the rank and file of the police service. As for the brass, "they're sup- portive of me following my dreams and my goals." While seeking the nom- ination, he took a six-week unpaid leave of absence and he'll take another leave when the writ drops and the election is called. Of the Conservative par- ty, he said, "I believe in their platform. I believe its plans are in line with my values and what I believe in." Government needs to "live within our means and running multibillion defi- cits is going to cripple fu- ture generations." He currently lives in Hampton, but will move to Ajax if he wins. He's not running in Dur- ham Riding because it's held by Erin O'Toole, the Conservative incumbent. "I do have ties to Ajax. Ajax holds a special place in my heart. I started my policing career in Ajax in 1994," he said. "I've watched Ajax grow from a sleepy town to what it is today." He's spent much of his police career in regionwide units, such as sexual as- sault and homicide. He's currently in the profes- sional standards division. During his run for re- gional chair, Dingwall said he "received the majority of my support in Ajax. The majority of my volunteers were from Ajax. I have friendships and connec- tions throughout Ajax. It was the logical choice for me." T he school board has teamed up with Ontario Tech University on the project. In January 2019, an en- gineering professional from the university began working two days a week at Viola Desmond P.S. in Ajax and Northern Danc- er P.S. in Oshawa, sup- porting teachers who want to build their under- standing of science, tech- nology, math and engi- neering. A new DDSB report says that the initiative is increasing student en- g agement and boosting teacher confidence. Funding is coming from grants received by Ontario Tech; the part- nership will continue for the 2019-20 school year at the same two schools. If grant funding contin- ues, the plan is to expand to two different DDSB schools for 2020-21. All Energy Efficient Blinds On Sale Now...SALE!* DURHAM - On June 1, Toronto drag queens Lucy Flawless and Juice Boxx read stories to a crowd of about 180 people at the Bowmanville branch of the Clarington Public Library. The event was one of eight drag queen story times taking place in Dur- ham this year through a partnership between local libraries and Youth Pride Durham. Metroland Durham Re- gion Media Group had a chance to ask a few ques- tions before the show. Why do story- time for kids at a library? Juice Boxx: Be- cause it's really fun. And, it's fun to get an audience that isn't a bunch of drunk people in a bar. Lucy Flawless: And, we're getting to tell our community's stories. Q. What kinds of questions do kids ask you? Lucy Flawless: Is that a wig? Juice Boxx: Are you a princess? Lucy Flawless:What are your superpowers? Q. How long does it take you to get ready? Juice Boxx: About 45 minutes to an hour. But I'm an anomaly. Lucy Flawless:I take way longer, I usually take about two hours. I can do quicker, but I like to have two hours. Q. We recently pub- lished an advance story about Drag Queen Sto- rytime and received some intolerant com- ments on our social me- dia. How do you respond to that kind of thing? Juice Boxx: Those are just ignorant people that will eventually get phased out. The new generation is so open. These kids are be- ing exposed to things like this so early, they become more open as they grow up. Eventually that kind of bigotry just slows down. Q. How did you start doing drag? Juice Boxx: I've been doing it for five years. I de- cided to start doing it for fun, and then I was like, "I'm pretty good at this!" so I stuck with it. Lucy Flawless:I've been doing it for three years. I'm an actor as well, I do theatre. I started getting cast in roles in drag - I did a film in drag, I did a play in drag. And then I was cast as a backup dancer for a bunch of drag queens, and that kind of sealed the deal. TWO DRAG QUEENS, 5 QUESTIONS Drag Queen Lucy Flawless read a story at the Clarington Library June 1 during one of several Drag Queen Storytime events at libraries across Durham as part of Pride celebrations. Snowblowers. Motor- cycles. Snowmobiles. If it has a small engine, An- drew Oliver can probably fix it. The Grade 11 student at Father Leo J. Austin Cath- olic Secondary School in Whitby just won a gold medal at Skills Canada - a national competition that brings the best skilled trades students together to compete. Oliver, 16, competed in the "outdoor power and recreational equipment" category and won gold and both Skills Ontario and Skills Canada. He is the only student from Durham to win gold at the national event. Oliver has been inter- ested in fixing things since he was a toddler helping in his grandfather's work- shop. By the time he was 12, he was making repairs solo, fixing broken weed eaters and leaf blowers. "I'm mostly self-taught," he says. "I like figuring out what's wrong with some- thing and how to fix it." At the Skills Canada National Competition, which took place in Halifax on May 28 and 29, Oliver faced tests like inspecting a lawn mower and replac- ing parts, and diagnosing and fixing a dirt bike that wouldn't start - all on a time limit. "I was excited - and I was surprised," he says of win- ning gold. Vince Carnovale, who teaches transportation at Father Leo J. Austin, was so thrilled by the win that none of his photos from the event turned out, "because I was yelling and jumping up and down." While Oliver has turned his skill into a small side business, selling fixed up lawn mowers and snow- blowers, he doesn't plan to make it a career. He's still deciding on a path after high school, but is considering mechanical engineering. The Skills Canada com- petition has more than 40 categories, including landscape gardening, mo- bile robotics, plumbing, baking, hairstyling, car painting and video pro- duction. Oliver isn't the only big winner from his school this year. He and a fellow student nominated Carnovale for the Toronto Automotive Technology Competition's Teacher of the Year Award -and he won. In their essay nominat- ing Carnovale, the stu- dents highlighted how he "goes above and beyond," often working with stu- dents in the evening and on weekends to help them build their skills. "This is my passion," Carnovale says. His award includes $1,000 to put toward the transportation program at the school. IF IT HAS A SMALL ENGINE, THIS DURHAM TEEN CAN FIX IT Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Seconary School teacher Vince Carnovale was awarded teacher of the year, while Andrew Oliver, a Grade 11 student at the Whitby school, earned a gold medal at the Skills Canada Competition recently.
