"Tonight is all about citizen action and politi- cians of vision." The Pickering airport lands, class one farmland expropriated in the 1970s, are currently being considered in an aviation study commissioned by the federal government. DURHAM - The parents of a woman murdered days before she was due to give birth say the man convicted of the killing is appealing his prison sentence. Chan Goberdhan, whose daughter Arianna Goberd- han was stabbed to death in April of 2017, said he's been informed that confessed kill- er Nicholas Baig is appeal- ing the 17-year term of parole ineligibility given him dur- ing a sentencing hearing May 2. "We did expect it," Chan Goberdhan said. "When you're a loser and you have nothing to lose, why not give it a shot?" Arianna Goberdhan was 27 years old and nine months pregnant with a daughter she intended to name Asaara when she was stabbed 17 times by Baig, her husband, in Pickering on April 7, 2017. Baig, who was described as an abusive and jealous man who feared Ari- anna was going to leave him, fled the scene but was arrest- ed soon after. In January of this year he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Superior Court Justice Jocelyn Speyer imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison and set Baig's pa- role eligibility at 17 years, which is acknowledged as being at the high end of the scale for similar offences in Canada. The sentence was a disap- pointment to the Goberdhan family, who have launched a petition calling on federal politicians to criminalize the killing of an unborn child during an act of violence against the mother. Canadi- an law has no protections for in utero children. In a recent interview Chan Goberdhan said his family takes issue not with the judge, who ruled within the parameters of estab- lished law, but rather the law itself. "She was restricted and restrained by federal laws that governed what she can and cannot do," Goberdhan said of Speyer. "She did her best. I think she was very sympathetic to what trans- pired." Goberdhan said he's been disappointed by a lack of re- sponse from local Liberal MPs. He and his family are hoping an expression of pub- lic support will spark a re- view of laws regarding the legal status of unborn vic- tims. They've gathered more than 6,000 signatures in their effort to change Canada's laws and maintain a website at www.ariannaslaw.com. Baig's sentence appeal would be heard by the Onta- rio Court of Appeal. FAMILY CONFIRMS PREGNANT WOMAN'S KILLER WILL APPEAL SENTENCE Arianna Goberdhan was nine months pregnant when she was murdered by her husband in April of 2017. Her family has launched a petition calling on the federal government to pass legislation making the killing of pre-born children a crime. A rally will be held at the Oshawa courthouse May 2, the day Nicholas Baig is to be sentenced for Goberdhan's killing. The event was held to "ramp up enthusiasm about an airport" and "get the powers that be on side," said Parish. "It seemed to totally fall flat. Everybody in the room was from Durham." He noted there was "no uptake at all" in the Toron- to media following the event. "It didn't do what it was supposed to do. The tactic is to appeal to elites and get the elites on board and get them pushing hard for this development." In the nearly half a cen- tury since the federal gov- ernment expropriated the Pickering land, said Par- ish, "Nobody has ever asked the people, 'do you want an airport in north Pickering?' I'm not con- vinced they do. Politicians will go where people want them to go." He outlined a number of environmental concerns in Durham Region, includ- ing rising Lake Ontario water levels, shoreline erosion, solid waste dis- posal and development proposals threatening the Carruthers Creek headwa- ters. "Right now we are un- der threat in so many ways surrounding the en- vironment," he said. "We're under attack ... We have a government in On- tario and I don't think they care." It's not a situation of the economy versus the envi- ronment, said Parish, add- ing there can't be an econo- my if the environment is trashed. "There is only one solu- tion. The solution is for people like you to rally around and get involved in these environmental con- cerns." The current provincial government, by abolishing the watchdog position of environmental commis- sioner, is "basically saying 'we're going to do stuff fast and loose with the envi- ronment,'" said Parish. "No one can call them out, and that's a very telling thing." He likened it to taking "the referee out of the game," and said Bill 108 amending legislation puts the interests of a small group of developers ahead of the people of Ontario. "We need to be aware, we need to speak up," said Parish, advocating people "make a lot of noise" through emailing and phone calls. "Things can happen." Saxe, who was Onta- rio's environmental com- missioner from 2015 until the position was abolished by the Province in late 2018, said her job was to re- port to the legislature on a non-partisan basis. Her presentation in Claremont centred on cli- mate change, which she said is worsened by air- ports, more driving, and more pavement. "We need land, not land- ings," she said. Climate change, said Saxe, changes everything. "Is it as bad as we think? I'm afraid it's much worse." And much worse is ahead, she said, adding most climate pollution is invisible. Canada is warming fas- ter than the global aver- age, with winter precipita- tion changing and climate extremes bringing floods, drought and fires. The first epidemic of climate change is Lyme disease, spread by ticks, said Saxe. "We have it be- cause the winter has changed." Insured losses in prop- erty damage due to ex- treme weather amounted to $1.3 billion in 2018, and 10 per cent of Canadian prop- erties may soon be consid- ered too high a risk for pri- vate flood insurance, she said. It takes a generation be- tween the time we put cli- mate pollution into the air and the time we experi- ence the results, said Saxe, who noted "20th century normal is gone" with "no new normal in sight. New normal means it's settled down, and we are nowhere near new normal." Unpredictable weather impacts food and farming, while warmer water re- duces oxygen for cold-wa- ter fish and puts them un- der stress and makes them more susceptible to dis- ease and death, she said. Half the climate change in the world has been emit- ted in the last 30 years "and none of this was a secret," said Saxe. "Is it too late for what we're doing to mat- ter? Not quite yet." Ontario was doing so much right in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its Cap and Trade pro- gram, now cancelled, was starting to work, she said. Bill 108 means endangered species will no longer be protected in Ontario, she added. The biggest polluters are people, not big indus- try, she said, with trans- portation and driving the largest source of pollution. Urban sprawl, flying and more pavement makes cli- mate pollution and ex- treme heat worse, she said. Knowledge and action can lead to hope, said Saxe, whose presentation drew prolonged applause. "We have to find ways to work together, and then we will have hope for the future." NEWS Nancy Steinhausen signed a petition during a Land Over Landings meeting at the Dr. Nelson F. Emergency calls to po- lice were also up in the first quarter of 2019 compared to 2018, a stat largely driven by domestic disturbances and reports of armed persons, Durham police Deputy Chief Todd Rollauer said in a presentation to the board Tuesday, May 21. Officers investigated 1,152 violent crimes in the first quarter, up from 996 in the same period last year, Rollauer said. "These increases are driven by assaults and threatening and harassing communication," the depu- ty chief said. "Overall, there has been a 16 per cent in- crease in violent crime." He noted that calls for service across the region (28,836 in the first quarter for 2019) were up slightly over 2018 (23,595). Notable among those calls for service were more than 1,100 calls to assist paramedics, 10 per cent of which involved overdoses, Rollauer said. "We've noticed an in- crease in calls from (Dur- ham paramedics). They're calling us more often now when they are responding to suspected opioid overdos- es," said the deputy chief. "Last year in 2018, there were 10 fatal overdoses (in the first quarter). In the first quarter of 2019 there are 26 suspected (overdose) deaths. This number may change as we're awaiting some toxicology (testing) to come back, but it appears we are up-ticking on the num- ber of opioid deaths in the region." The OD stats cited by Rol- lauer referred only to police- involved incidents, not the total number of opioid deaths in the region. So far this year, officers have responded to 231 emer- gency calls for armed-per- son reports, but relatively few of those turned out to in- volve weapons, Rollauer said. Of those incidents 21 (9 per cent) were confirmed to involve guns, while 25 (11 per cent) involved knives. "The largest portion of these calls, 25 per cent, end- ed up being reclassified as check on well being calls or disturbance calls," the depu- ty chief told board members. Other highlights of the report: •The number of reports for simple assaults was up by 89 in the first quarter of 2019 over the same period in 2018, and a third of those came from "repeat address- es" including schools (12 per cent), long-term care resi- dences (15 per cent), hospi- tals and shopping malls. There was a 15 per cent drop in more serious incidents such as assault with a weap- on and assault causing bodi- ly harm (75 in 2019 compared to 92 in 2018), while aggravat- ed assaults remained rela- tively static with 13 in the first quarter of this year, one more than the same pe- riod in 2018. •Police responded to 850 calls from citizens using 911 to report suspicious drivers, resulting in 176 drunk-driv- ing arrests. "We need to thank our residents, be- cause those are 176 impai- reds taken off the roads," Rollauer said. •Officers investigated 102 reports of threatening or ha- rassing communications, most of them the result of so- cial media posts. •Durham police have in- vestigated seven shootings in the first quarter for 2019 (six of them in Pickering and Ajax) compared to eight in the first quarter for 2018. •There have been 12 re- ported stabbings, none of which occurred in the north Durham area. •Legalization of marijua- na, which came into effect last October, has not result- ed in a surge in impaired-by- drug charges against driv- ers. "We have not noticed an increase in cannabis-related impaired driving since that legalization," Rollauer said. "Most drug impairment driving incidents are involv- ing other drugs, and not can- nabis." •Officers conducted nearly 2,100 checks on well- being calls, the majority in- volving seniors. "We're get- ting these requests coming from family members and medical professionals," Rol- lauer said. •The Durham police ser- vice's weighted clearance rate for incidents was 45.7 per cent for the analysis pe- riod, which is consistent with the service's five-year average. Rollauer said Dur- ham rates well to compara- ble services, second to Hal- ton Region for weighted clearance rate. Understand the process (NC) Purchasing a home is a highly personal and emotional decision, but also a major financial commitment. In Canada, the real estate market is ever-changing, and regulation and mortgage rate changes are plentiful. Many factors are at play, and affordability is often a key concern. It can be a lot to keep up with and difficult to feel truly knowledgeable and confident about entering the market, whether it’s your first or fifth time as a buy- er. To help you navigate through the process, here’s a breakdown of the major milestones: Dream: When you’re not quite at the stage to put the pedal to the metal and start hunting for your next home, this is the stage where your options are limitless and information gathering is essential. Create a budget and savings plan – take some time to understand what you need to buy your first or next home. Shop: You’ve made the decision that it’s time to move; mortgage and home shopping are imminent. Consider researching the different types of homes and neighbourhoods you’re interested in as well as planning what your budget would look like so you’re informed. Talking to a mortgage specialist will help you with mortgage math and the total costs of homeownership, while a realtor will help with finding listings suited to your needs and preferences. Buy: You’re not just buying a home, but likely a mortgage as well. This is a major financial milestone and, for many, this will be the largest investment of a lifetime. This is also the stage where expenses will start to ramp up, as the major- ity of buyers start making purchases before the move, so all the planning and budgeting you conducted will continue to be of the upmost importance. Once your purchase is confirmed, make sure you celebrate. Move: Transition is upon you. Relocating can be stressful, but also exciting. Getting organized and settled in your new space is an exciting time. Live: Time to love your new home. Whether it’s move-in ready or you’re plan- ning a renovation, having strategically navigated the steps above will ensure you stay a happy homeowner. Before you take on the task, be sure you know what’s involved. An executor is a legal representative named in a will to handle an estate when someone dies. It’s not a simple job. Here are a few of the duties of an executor.“ Find, read and interpret the will. • Consult with a lawyer and arrange court validation of the will, known as probate. • Help with funeral arrangements.“Locate and deal with beneficiaries.” • Prepare an inventory of the deceased’s assets and liabilities. • Deal with financial institutions.“Distribute assets as specified in the will.” • Pay debts and estate expenses. • File the deceased’s final income tax return. Some of these duties can require considerable financial acumen. And at the very least, people skills may be involved at a time when relatives are bereaved. If you’re not up to the job, don’t take it on. Edward Jones, member Canadian Investor Protection Fund DURHAM - Durham Regional Police Chief Paul Martin has released a statement calling for an "open, transparent" in- quiry into the allegations of corruption that are cur- rently rocking the organi- zation. "I welcome an open, transparent and unbiased inquiry," Martin said in a statement released late Monday afternoon. The chief was reacting to Fri- day's announcement by the Ontario Civilian Po- lice Commission (OCPC) that it was appointing a retired Toronto cop to oversee the service as it investigates what it called "credible" allegations of misconduct, including po- tential criminal activity, by senior officers. Martin said he's await- ing disclosure of specific details of the allegations, something that was re- quested by the Durham Police Services Board weeks ago. "I was just informed of the OCPC investigation on Friday evening and have yet to see the details of these allegations be- hind the OCPC actions. Understandably, we were reluctant to make any public statements on this matter until we have seen the official complaints," Martin said in Monday's statement. "I have asked the OCPC, as has the Dur- ham Police Services Board, some months ago, for the complaint docu- ments." Martin and other top officials within the Dur- ham force were accused of serious misconduct by several veteran officers who filed complaints to the provincial govern- ment, as previously re- vealed in reporting by the Toronto Star. The com- plaints include allega- tions that senior com- mand threatened officers with trumped-up accusa- tions of misconduct in at- tempts to intimidate or dig up dirt on those who had fallen out of favour with the management, and allegations of lying under oath to cover up for the chief, according to the Star's reporting. In Monday's statement, Martin said the OCPC in- vestigation seems to be fo- cused on matters and complaints that have pre- viously been investigated. "It is unfortunate that policing resources must once again be expended, much of it on claims that have already been investi- g ated. I will do my best to ensure this is the last time they can be resurrected, and that this is done as fairly and without bias as possible, to remove this unfair shadow over the men and women who serve, with distinction, the communities in Dur- ham Region" Martin said. -With files from Torstar CHIEF CALLS FOR 'TRANSPARENT' PROBE INTO DURHAM POLICE JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durham region.com Durham Regional Police Chief Paul Martin Torstar file photo NEWS MARTIN SAID HE'S AWAITING DISCLOSURE OF SPECIFIC DETAILS OF THE ALLEGATIONS We Are Hiring g ClAss Courier Drivers $17/hour when working weekdays | $18 when working weekends Flexible to work Monday through Sunday - Full time hours (5 shifts per week) Weekend Only Drivers - Must be able to work both shifts 8-12 hours per day BENEFITS AVAILABLE!! Take a good look at Valerie Bertinelli. The former teen star was just 15-years old when she began a nine-season stint on One Day at a Time (1975 – 1984). She played wisecracking Barbara, youngest daughter of Bonnie Franklin’s single mom Ann Romano, on the Norman Lear sitcom. Pat Har-rington, Jr., and Mackenzie Phillips also starred. That series went off the air 35 years ago. During its run, in real life, Bertinelli got mar-ried while still just 20 to rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. On the professional side, she became a bit of movie-of-the-week queen; in real life, the look-a-like yet unlikely pair were cast as a good-girl, bad boy duo in dozens of tabloids. The pair hung in and had a son, “Wolie” (now 28), in 1991.There was more TV series work, including a two-season stint on the wholesome dra-ma Touched by an Angel. She and Van Halen, who struggled with addiction, eventually did split and the actress had a tough time keeping her weight in check. That led to her becoming a spokesperson for the diet and nutrition company Jenny Craig. Bertinelli lost 50 pounds, started running marathons and eventually chronicled her experience in her best-selling 2008 autobiography, “Losing It: And Gaining my Life Back One Pound at a Time”.Her reward came by way of a career re-birth in the cable sitcom Hot in Cleveland, star-ring opposite TV comedy veterans Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and the great Betty White. “Hot in Cleveland was the easiest job in the world and I’m still p---‘d off that TV LAND cancelled us,” she told critics last February in Pasadena, Calif., at a Food Network press conference. “I think it was stupidest thing they ever did.”Bertinelli loved working with her three veteran co-stars. “Off set we would have dinner all together all the time. We still text each other.”Since that show went out of production in 2015, however, she’s been busier than ever hosting a variety of food competition and cooking shows seen on Food Network Canada.“It’s crazy,” says Bertinelli of her recent shout outs from fans. “I don’t get Barbara Coo-per (her One Day at a Time character) anymore. I don’t even get Melanie Moretti any-more (from Hot in Cleveland). I get, like, ‘Oh, I saw your show. You make it look so easy to make such and such.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. I’m really a Food Network personality now.’”The Wilmington, Delaware, native has jumped into the role with both forks. Besides By Bill Brioux Continued on following page RonaldJ.Klein,D.P.M.
