JAN. 19 th Beware of 11 critical home inspection traps before you list your Ajax/Pickering home for sale Ajax/Pickering- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-611-8940 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On Wednesday, jurors heard numerous police in- tercepts of phone calls made by David Knight in November and December 2014. Durham police con- ducted the taps as they in- vestigated the death of 39- year-old Carmela Knight, who was murdered in the Pebblestone Crescent home she had shared with David and their sons on Sept. 15, 2014. Jurors heard several calls in which Knight dis- cussed his plans to buy a home in Florida and find a school for his two sons. Cops were listening as Knight sought out school transcripts and vaccina- tion records for his sons, and inquired about ac- commodations for the family dog on a flight to F lorida for Christmas of 2014. The police also inter- cepted calls Knight made as he tried to obtain a copy of a death certificate for Carmela, whose funeral he and the children had not attended. Knight has pleaded not guilty to first-degree mur- der, arson and conspiracy to commit murder. The Crown alleges he hired an acquaintance, Graham MacDonald, who attacked and killed Carmela, then set fire to the Pickering house before fleeing the scene. At the time of her death Carmela was in the pro- cess of divorcing David, af- ter learning he'd been con- ducting a long-term affair with a woman in Florida, court has heard. She died just days before a sched- uled family court hearing, where she was seeking custody of the children. In the calls played in court Jan. 9 David spoke to people including his par- ents, his girlfriend in Flor- ida, school staff, airline workers, and a moving company, among others. He described to his par- ents a house he'd made an offer on in Florida, en- thusing over its proximity to schools and the size of the yard. "I won't have a mort- g age, plus I'll have money in the bank," he said. Speaking to his mother in Ajax, David appeared to be looking forward to a new start in Florida. "It's nice to see the sun," he said at one point. "I didn't think I'd ever get to see it again." In another call David called a church that had been the site of Carmela's funeral, asking if he could obtain a copy of her death certificate. Informed he'd have to try another source, he asked, "You wouldn't know what fu- neral home she was at, would you?" Court heard earlier that when a memorial ser- vice attended by hundreds of people was held for Car- mela, David and the chil- dren were not in atten- dance. The call to the church occurred Dec. 8, when Da- vid made a flurry of calls as he prepared to travel to F lorida for Christmas. Later that day he was the recipient of a call - from a bank that had financed his car loan. He was informed the BMW was being repos- sessed because he hadn't made a payment on it in four months. "Where do they want it turned in?" David asked. "I'm not going to argue or fight. I'm done." The trial continues in Oshawa. Oshawa GM worker Jackie Sobil spoke on behalf of regular workers in the plant who are skeptical of talk of good sever- ance packages and available jobs for displaced workers. Sobil said she began working at the Oshawa plant in 2011 as a contract worker and it took six years for her to be hired full-time. "General Motors is telling people we're going to get a pen- sion, a car voucher, this kind of stuff," she said. "It's a lie. I have two years seniority. What are you going to give me except a box of tissues to wipe my tears when I no longer have a job to support my family?" She also questioned how many workers would be eligible for good pensions. GM has esti- mated about half of the 2,500 workers at the Oshawa plant are pension-eligible. However, Sobil pointed out her boyfriend has 16 years of experience at GM and is No. 900 in seniority. She said she doesn't believe everyone old enough for a pension has enough years worked for full benefits. Unifor has released a report estimating the closure of the Oshawa plant will cost 24,000 jobs when spinoff jobs are fac- tored in and local workers at- tending the rally shared their worries about available jobs. Jennifer Hart of Clarington is a dock tech in the Oshawa GM plant. She has worked for GM for 17 years but is many years from retirement. While she rode the bus to Windsor, she also ex- pressed skepticism about the promise of jobs for GM workers. "People have picked up the phone and called these places and they say we don't have these jobs or we have a couple but they have specific requirements," she said. "We can't just walk in." At the rally, Moffat ques- tioned the availability of 5,000 jobs for displaced workers -- a topic discussed by GM Canada vice-president David Paterson. "General Motors is at 306 workers on indefinite layoff at our CAMI facility in Ingersoll and I don't see (Paterson) running down there and giving them a job." Both Moffat and Dias stressed the importance of gov- ernment action. "To say as workers we're dis- appointed in our government would be an understatement," said Moffat. "Premier (Doug) Ford has done absolutely noth- ing. On the first day he threw the towel in, he said the ship has left the dock. The Oshawa autoworkers were joined on the road to Wind- sor by unionized workers from other industries who are sup- porting the fight to save the plant. Kaitlyn Teller, a support staff member at the University of Onta- rio Institute of Technology (UOIT) student union and a Unifor mem- ber, pointed out that many stu- dents work at the GM Oshawa plant in the summers to help pay their expensive tuition fees. Sandra Pennington of Cla- rington is a DRT bus driver and member of Local 222. She said she joined the caravan to Wind- sor because she is worried about the effect of the plant closure on Durham Region and the prov- ince as a whole. "I think good jobs in the man- ufacturing sector are a big por- tion of the middle class and the middle class is the lifeblood of this community." Dias stopped short of calling for a boycott of GM but said the union would continue to press the company. He didn't provide details, but said the union would have a message for international re- porters converging on the De- troit auto show this week and planned to deliver a message to international reporters at the event. "We're not a happy group here in Canada and we're damn well prepared to show you how mad we really are," said Dias. "If (GM doesn't) listen to us, you're not listening to the con- sumers, you're not going to lis- ten to the politicians, if all you care about is Wall Street hope- fully you'll listen to Wall Street when we start to take direct ac- tion in Canada to get your abso- lute attention." Dias concluded his com- ments by leading another round of the chant of the day: If you sell here, build here. NEWS GM WORKERS SKEPTICAL OF COMPANY'S JOBS, SEVERANCE PROMISES Oshawa GM workers, their friends and supporters protested GM's decision to close the Oshawa Assembly Plant at the end of this year at a rally in Windsor on Friday, Jan. 11. DURHAM - Education funding cuts announced last month will have a $1- million impact at the Dur- ham District School Board. The school board con- firmed this week that it will receive approximate- ly $1 million less in "EPO" grant funding from the province for the 2017/2018 school year. However, officials stressed that no programs are being cut - the DDSB will use its own funding to cover costs. On Dec. 14, the provin- cial government abruptly announced that $25 mil- lion would be cut from a fund known as "EPO" grants. The "Education Pro- grams - Other" fund pays for programs such as in- classroom tutors, daily physical activity initia- tives and programs that support Indigenous and racialized students. At the DDSB, the $1 mil- lion in funds was ear- marked for after-school tutoring programs, learn- ing and leadership pro- jects for Indigenous stu- dents, "Student Success Leaders Supporting Ra- cialized Students," and the board's annual Cy- pher conference focused on black male empower- ment. "It is worth noting that these programs have been determined by the DDSB to be of high-value, and as such will be self-funded by the DDSB," a statement from the school board notes. "This is possible due largely to the caution, foresight and financial management of our board. Were it not for prudent and timely planning, the DDSB may very well have been in a position similar to that of many other school boards across the province facing program- ming and job cuts." Board officials noted that "difficult decisions" in recent years - such as closing and consolidating schools, and changing bell times - have allowed the DDSB to realize cost sav- ings. However, DDSB chair Michael Barrett said it is still concerning to see funding withdrawn mid- year. "We should be able to absorb funding withdraw- al without significant pro- gramming or staffing cuts in the current year," he said. "However, we remain very cautious regarding what future changes may be enacted by a govern- ment that has been elected with a mandate to cut costs and reduce deficits." Barrett has also been critical of how the funding cuts were rolled out, not- ing that Doug Ford's gov- ernment had just wrapped up what has been hailed as extensive public con- sultation on education in Ontario, before dropping the bombshell cuts. "The irony is not lost on me," he said. "This was done on a Friday at five o'clock, with no consulta- tion at all." The Durham Catholic District School Board said in a statement in Decem- ber that proactive plan- ning may cushion the blow to its programs. "The impact to our sys- tem was lessened during our planning stages as we had held back on spending in the areas that are typ- ically supported by EPO funding," DCDSB chair John Rinella said in the statement. "Overall we will be receiving most of the $2 million of EPO funding that was original- ly allocated but more in- formation is still to come." The DCDSB has not provided any further de- tails on how its programs may be affected - officials did not respond to re- quests for more informa- tion. Kayla Iafelice, a spokesperson for Minister of Education Lisa Thomp- son, said via email that the EPO grant "has a long track record of wasteful spending, overspending and millions of dollars of unfunded commitments." -With files from Torstar News Service DURHAM SCHOOL BOARD DOWN $1 MILLION DUE TO EDUCATION FUNDING CUTS JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com EDUCATION DDSB SAYS IT WILL USE ITS OWN FUNDS TO COVER AFFECTED PROGRAMS SUBMIT YOUR FAMILY DAY EVENTS AT DURHAMREGION.COM dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | We d n e s d a y , J a n u a r y 1 6 , 2 0 1 9 | 10 Me t r o l a n D Dur h a M real estate Press Run 162,050 January 16, 2019*Independently Owned & Operated Close to UoIt anddUrham College! JAN. 19 th DURHAM - Three days isn't much time to build a working robot from scratch - but a team of UOIT students recently did just that. This year marked the first time a team from the University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology com- peted in the international Robot in 3 Days (Ri3D) competition. The event challenges teams to build a robot ca- pable of competing in the annual FIRST Robotics competition for high school students - except in- stead of six weeks to build it, they have just 72 hours. Eric Whalls, captain of the UOIT Ri3D team, says that the three-day time frame is "definitely higher stress" - but exciting. "We really want to in- spire people, and show them what's possible," he said. The UOIT team re- ceived a code to open the specifications for this year's competition at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 - and got to work building a robot that needs to be able to roll up a ramp, place a ball in a tower and com- plete other tricky game tasks. The team of about 50 students pulled a couple of late nights at UOIT's Auto- motive Centre of Excel- lence (ACE); Whalls says that he sent everyone home at around 1:30 a.m. to get some sleep, before they were back first thing in the morning. There was plenty of cheering on Monday, Jan. 7, as the robot's wheels hit the ground and the team tried out some of the game tasks. "They're having so much fun," said Michelle Tsui-Woods, project co-or- dinator for the UOIT Fac- ulty of Engineering and Applied Science, and staff adviser for the Ri3D team. "What better way to con- nect what they've been learning in the classroom, to a real-life experience?" She says that compet- ing in Ri3D isn't just about robotics - students learn how to manage a tight deadline and a budget, as well as important team- work and collaboration skills. "A lot of challenges popped up and we had to improvise," Whalls said. "And that's what makes it fun." Check out the team's YouTube channel for foot- age of the three-day build.
