"Things that make k ids happy," explains A delaide Blagoev, 4. T he Love Boxes are for the Super Sophia Pro- j ect, an initiative started by Pickering's Sophia M egan and her family. Sophia was diagnosed w ith leukemia one month before her second b irthday. Now eight and cancer- free, she and her family give back by distributing thousands of Love Boxes to children in hospital. K indergarten teacher Victoria Mills says her s tudents initially set a goal of filling about 20 b oxes, one for each class- room at Frenchman's Bay Public School. It was a target they more than doubled. "They have been so, so excited to do this," says M ills, who wants her stu- d ents to be "community c itizens" who have an im- p act on others. "It's teaching them that even though they're l ittle, they can make a d ifference in their com- munity." T he kindergarten stu- d ents took ownership of the project, carefully w riting out an an- nouncement to read over the school PA system - even those who are just l earning the alphabet helped. T hey went from class to class making presen- tations about the Love Boxes, and when hun- d reds of donated items rolled in, the kindergar- teners sorted them by a ge and packed the box- es. "It was fun, because we're helping people," s ays Ryan Mitchell, 5. T he Super Sophia Pro- ject distributes Love Boxes to hospitals in Durham and the GTA. When the initiative s tarted in 2016, the goal was to distribute 100 Love Boxes to kids in hospital at Christmas - 1,100 were handed out. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Somebody won $1.6 bil- lion in a lottery recently. That's a tough number to even get your head around. One point six billion. To put things marginally in perspective on the huge- ness of this sum, the yearly interest, at even the lousi- est of rates, would be some- thing in the very nicely ap- pointed neighbourhood of $20,000,000 a year. That's $55,000 a day. What the hell would you even begin to do with that kind of dough? Speaking personally, and being all too aware of my penchant for juvenile behaviour, I would almost certainly blow it all on any number of ridiculous- ly stupid things; my own personal 24-7 DQ fran- chise with a free drive- thru for all of my friends, an around the world breakfast cruise with the real Captain Crunch, fronting the Temptations on Ain't Too Proud To Beg in front of a paid-for, packed crowd, installing a Cuban cigar and single malt vending machine in my living room, hiring Morgan Freeman to read me to sleep every night. Stuff like that. A wad that size, of course, also attracts more parasites than a Tijuana salad bar. Your life could be turned upside down just trying to stay one step ahead of the legions at- tempting to lighten your new financial burden. That would be a special kind of hell. Your phone would never stop ringing and you'd never again be sure if people liked you for you or your bankroll. But you could also, if you were careful, smart and loving, just have fun with it. Real fun. Not, golden bathtub filled with Courvoisier fun but the kind of fun that leaves you and the world feeling bet- ter. How cool would it be, for instance, to go out for dinner and secretly pick up the tab for a young cou- ple who look like they're just starting out? Or to anonymously pay for someone's overwhelming medical bills? To put a complete stranger through college or univer- sity with the only proviso that he or she pay it for- ward at some point in their life. To become a hu- man generator of opportu- nity and light. Money, af- ter all, is not the root of all evil or filthy lucre, or even the end or beginning of our troubles. It is, like us, simply energy in need of direction. Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY? COLUMNIST NEIL CRONE PONDERS WHAT HE WOULD DO IF HIS LUCKY NUMBERS WERE CALLED NEIL CRONE Column SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM MOST VOTERS DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CANDIDATES TO THE EDITOR: R E: A MINORITY VOTED BUT A M AJORITY WILL COMPLAIN, LETTER, OCT. 31 I agree it would be bet- ter if more people would vote. However, I think a bigger concern exists. What is the point of voting if you don’t know anything about the candidates? There is a good chance that you would vote for the person you least likely agree with. I never under- stood the line, “It doesn’t matter who you vote for so long as you vote.” If you don’t know anything about the candidates then I would say you shouldn’t vote. You may do more harm than good. My second point — most people are busy and do not have the time and energy left over to educate themselves about the can- didates. The prime way of learning about the candi- dates is to attend the can- didates debates. If only 26 per cent of eligible voters turned out to vote, and as- suming only 10 per cent of them attended any candi- dates meetings, that would mean that only three per cent of eligible voters at- tended any candidate’s meetings. A possible partial so- lution to this problem of poorly educated voters would be the provision of high-quality videos of the debates, make them easi- ly and readily available, and advertise and pro- mote them. Hopefully, many people would watch them, enabling them to make intelligent and informed decisions on which candidates to vote for. I have the feeling this is not what the incumbents would prefer since it would open the process up to more newcomers, and probably it would have happened by now. I watched a video of one de- bate where the audio and video were of low quality. I am sure that much higher quality videos could be produced at a reasonable cost if the will of the people in charge was there. Personally, I attended two debates, but I am re- tired and have the time. Most people don’t have that luxury. STEPHEN KORN AJAX TECHNOLOGY IS KILLING JOBS COMPLAINS SHOPPER TO THE EDITOR: T he other night I went to out to get a couple of small items at a large drugstore chain in Cour- tice. I was absolutely jaw dropped to find out my only checkout option was self checkout, there were no cashiers. I left my items on the counter and went to another store. I have never written in on any issue, but felt I needed to scream "wake up!" We are losing work ex- perience, we are losing jobs, and the personal in- teractions are nonexis- tent. I will not support a business that cuts jobs for machines. They should be ashamed. Em- ployed people can shop in your store, machines can't. NORMAL NEXT to NORMAL Beware of 11 critical home inspection traps before you list your Ajax/Pickering home for sale Ajax/Pickering- According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. AdvertisingFeature DURHAM - A key fig- ure in the Crown's case against a man accused in the murder of his wife took a defiant and profane stand in court Thursday, refusing to testify when he was called as a witness. Graham MacDonald swore, flashed his middle finger at the judge and court staff, and flat-out re- fused to even be sworn in as a witness when he ap- peared during the first-de- gree murder trial of David Knight Thursday in Osha- wa. Knight is accused of conspiring with MacDon- ald to kill Knight's wife, Carmela Knight, in Pick- ering in 2014. "Go f--- yourselves," an angry MacDonald de- clared. "I've got nothing to say." MacDonald, who is serving prison time, ap- peared to be agitated from the moment he appeared in the courtroom, mutter- ing as he trudged toward the witness stand while surrounded by police offi- cers, his hands cuffed and his legs shackled. He stood in the witness stand when asked to by a court regis- trar, but that's where his co-operation ended. When asked if he wished to swear on a Bible, MacDon- ald unleashed a stream of expletive-filled invective, making obscene gestures at the court staff and Su- perior Court Justice Alex Sosna. "I'm giving you the fin- ger. Go f--- yourself," Mac- Donald said to the judge. "Put that on the record." Looking on from the prisoner's dock was Knight, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and arson in Carmela's Sept. 15, 2014, death. Carmela, 39, was found in the burned-out garage of her family home on Pebblestone Crescent by firefighters. Her cause of death was determined to be neck compression, with blunt force facial trauma. The Crown alleges that Knight, who was in the midst of an acrimonious divorce from Carmela, conscripted MacDonald to carry out the killing. Knight was on the ice as- sisting with his son's hock- ey practice when Carmela was killed and the garage set ablaze, the Crown con- tends. Jurors in Knight's trial have been told they'll hear evidence that police con- ducted an extensive inves- tigation of Knight and MacDonald that involved undercover officers. During Thursday's ap- pearance Justice Sosna asked MacDonald if he wished to speak to a law- yer, warning him he was in "peril of contempt." "There's nothing to dis- cuss," MacDonald shot back. "I have no business being here." MacDonald was ush- ered out of the courtroom by officers soon thereaf- ter. David Knight's trial be- gan in early October and is expected to continue until Christmas time. Jurors have heard from witnesses about the breakdown of David and Carmela's mar- riage, which occurred af- ter Carmela discovered David was having an affair with a woman in Florida. Other witnesses have tes- tified about David Knight's efforts to estab- lish a construction busi- ness in Florida, where he wanted to move with his and Carmela's two sons. Carmela Knight died three days before a family court hearing at which she was seeking custody of the children and financial support from her es- tranged husband, jurors heard. Court has also heard that David made disparag- ing comments about Car- mela to others, accusing her of neglecting her chil- dren, staying out nights drinking and gambling, and seeing a boyfriend. Witnesses who knew Carmela have testified those claims were false. Jurors also heard that in October of 2014 there was a celebration of life for Carmela and that mem- bers of her son's hockey team had planned to at- tend, wearing their jer- seys in support of the fam- ily. David Knight informed team officials he wouldn't be taking the boys to the service because it wasn't a safe environment for them, court heard. Jurors heard that when the service occurred in Brooklin, hundreds of people were in attendance. But Carmela's husband and sons were not among them. The trial continues in Oshawa. NEWS KEY FIGURE IN CROWN'S CASE AGAINST SUSPECT IN PICKERING MURDER REFUSES TO TESTIFY Two men have been charged with murder in the death of a Pickering women whose body was found in the remains of a house fire last fall. Police said Carmela Knight, 39, was found with "obvious signs of trauma" after firefighters responded to a report of a garage fire on Pebblestone Crescent in Pickering on Sept. 15, 2014. Ryan Pfeiffer/Metroland THE ART OF THE COCKTAIL DURHAM - The Durham District School Board is kicking off the next phase of its equity and diversity work with the launch of a three-year plan that will see everything from more diverse staff hir- ing, to weaving Indigenous "ways of know- ing" into classroom practices. The Equity and Diversity Strategic Plan for 2018-2021 was unveiled at the board's Nov. 5 standing committee meet- ing - it builds on the 2017-2018 document released last fall. DDSB director of education Lisa Millar says equity is a "core priority" as the board and surrounding community be- come increasingly diverse. "Our community is diverse and that is absolutely our strength," she says. "These are our kids, and our kids matter." Initiatives planned for the next three years include: ongoing efforts to diversi- fy DDSB staff through "equitable re- cruitment," more inclusive curriculum resources, more opportunity for stu- dents to have a voice - through student advisory councils, for example - and in- corporating Indigenous ways of know- ing into the classroom, such as talking circles. The DDSB has made equity an in- tense focus in recent years. Diversity teams have been imple- mented in schools, the board has seen the creation of new educator groups like the Muslim Educators Network of Dur- ham and the Durham Educators Net- work for South Asians. New resources have been launched including a Compendium of Action for Black Student Success and an updated guide to help schools support transgen- der students. This fall, the DDSB plans to launch an updated version of its guide to ac- commodating creed and religion in schools - the document is expected to be public sometime in November. For as long as I've lived, I've associated Cana- da with cries and causes. They've made it into our national psyche; many of which we want the govern- ment to regulate or fund. We now look to the gov- ernment to soothe our ev- ery cry and support our ev- ery cause. It's as though they've become responsi- ble for our very lives and for solving every problem we have. If this were a per- sonal relationship, we'd say that expectation would be flat out unhealthy. In Ontario, some are com- plaining the government isn't delivering their recre- ational marijuana quick enough. The government was never meant to be our all in all - our parents, pusher or even gateway to the after- life - and yet it has its hands in all these areas and more. This is a tall order for mere men. As I watched the last days of Audrey Parker's life play out, this is what amazed me the most. She's the woman who had an as- sisted death on Nov. 1 after moving up the date to do so because the Medical Assis- tance in Dying (MAID) law requires that late-stage consent be given by the pa- tient right before the pro- cedure, which might not have been possible if she lost competency due to a deterioration in her health. "If the government would just amend the law ... in Audrey's category. We are not vulnerable. We are not going to change our minds. We are already dy- ing. Just let us die peace- fully," said Ms. Parker. In her eyes, the govern- ment's law forced her hand. In turn, journalists asked both the justice and health ministers if they'd be changing the law in light of her case as if to say, "You're being so unfair; you're the reason why she's choosing to die now." The atmosphere of our existence as Canadians has become causes, sick- ness and death with an ex- pectation the government is the practitioner. If Ms. Parker is now considered a champion for MAID, then I will champion overcoming an atmosphere that seems hell-bent on Canadians be- ing propped up, dependent or dead. There is more to life than this, and I want our children to have a chance to know it. Don't you? -Renae Jarrett lives in Durham, loves Canada and is passionate about truth in current affairs. AJAX - The town is home to a new seniors' re- tirement residence. Revera has opened Westney Gardens, a 132- suite retirement centre at Westney and Rossland roads. It's the second facility Revera has opened in Ajax. It also operates Winbourne Park Long Term Care Home, next to Westney Gardens. Ron Brett, national di- rector of operations for Revera, said the company chose an Ajax site, "As a company, we did research the need for high-quality care." Market researched showed it was "a great idea, so here we are." The suites come in stu- dio, one- and two-bedroom sizes. Each suite has a kitchen, along with in- suite laundry as well as a balcony. The facility opened in late July and is over 50 per cent occupied. "We're very, very happy with the way things are go- ing," Brett said. "We cater to predomi- nantly independent se- niors. There is 24-hour nursing," he noted. Some of the suites are barrier-friendly to allow for easier movement. Rivera has 500 facilities in Canada, the United States and the United King- dom. It has about 50,000 employees, and cares for about 55,000 residents. In Canada, it has 100 facilities, with 76 in Ontario. As for more facilities in Durham, Brett said, "We have focused on areas of growth. We have 50 active programs and a lot are in Ontario. I'm not sure if Durham is in the mix." If market research justi- fies more in Durham, "we'd be happy to expand in the Ajax and Durham area," he added. "From our perspective, we are absolutely thrilled to be opening Westney Gar- dens, a 132-suite state-of- the-art facility. It has lots of amenities. It's a $50-million investment by Revera. It's a big deal for us. It's a big deal for Ajax. We're absolutely thrilled to be in the area," Brett said. Among the amenities are a fitness centre, an off- leash dog run, a theatre and a golf simulator. For more information, visit www.reveraliving- .com. Alex leaves his beloved wife of 65 years Jean, his loving son Callum and his partner Barb, his loving daughter Morag and her husband Stindar and his adored grand-daughter Erin and her husband Matt. Dad grew up in Scotland and worked in the grocery business before taking a role in India, managing a tea plantation. His love of travel, his desire to better himself and his family, led to a move to the French Cameroon Development Corporation, operating food stores. After a brief return to Scotland, Dad and his family emigrated to Canada in 1965. Almost immediately, he began to work for Miracle Food Mart, as a store manager. Dad was the long-time manager of Miracle Food Mart in Ajax, he also managed locations in Whitby and Bowmanville, prior to his retirement in 1989. After making Bowmanville home for 35 years, Dad and Mum moved to Whitby to take advantage of the waterfront trail and be closer to family. In his later years, Dad was a fixture on the trail, on his scooter, admiring the wildlife and enjoying the view of the lake. Dad's greatest joy was his family, all gathered around the dinner table enjoying good food, good wine, interesting conversation and special times together. Dad always had a twinkle in his eye and was never shy to share his views. We would like to thank the staff of 9G at Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their outstanding care and compassion, during Dad's short stay in hospital. As per Dad's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. His beloved family will gather around the dinner table to celebrate the life and legacy of a special and much loved husband, father and grandfather.
