AJAX - Jerry Coughlan set-
tles into his favourite chair at
the table in his bright, beautiful
home in Ajax.
A tad uncomfortable to be
talking about himself and the
contributions he's made to the
community, the accomplished
developer is still warm and wel-
coming.
The humble Coughlan was
honoured recently by the orga-
nizations he's helped, politi-
cians, family and friends for his
philanthropic work in Durham
Region.
"It takes my breath away re-
ally, the extent of his philan-
thropy," says Tracy Paterson,

dation CEO.

Ajax/Pickering - If your home has
just come off the market and hasn’t
sold, don’t be discouraged. The
reason your home did not sell may
have nothing to do with your home
or the market. In reality, your home
may have been one of the more
desirable properties for sale. So why
didn’t your home sell.
This year many of the homes
listed for sale never sold at all, and
many sellers found that there was a
tremendous amount a homeowner
needed to be educated on to sell their
home for top dollar in the shortest
time period. Don’t risk making the
wrong choices and losing both time
and money on your investment.
Before you hire a realtor, know the
right questions to ask to save you
time and money.
Industry experts have prepared
a free special report called “How to
Sell a House that Didn’t Sell” which
educates you on the issues involved.

Coughlan's $5-million
donation to Grandview in
November will help build
the new headquarters in
Ajax. The state-of-the-art
treatment centre for chil-
dren with special needs
will now be named after
him.
Grandview's main fa-
cility in Oshawa was built
to serve 400 children. The
centre new treats more
than 6,000 and has out-
grown its space, with a
waiting list of more than
3,000.
"I'm happy for them,"
Coughlan says. "I'm hap-
py I did it."
The Salvation Army is
getting a complete new re-
build, thanks to Cough-
lan's generosity. The old
food bank has been torn
down and a new one will
take its place.
Coughlan was original-
ly approached by some-
one about funding some
repairs to the old build-
ing, but after taking a
tour of the facility, he
knew it wouldn't be
enough.
"I said 'tear the whole
damn thing down and
build a new one,'" he re-
calls.
Coughlan committed
$2 million to rebuild the
important community as-
set.
When his brother re-
turned from serving in
the Second World War, he
told stories of the Salva-
tion Army delivering food
and clothing to the front
lines, something he's al-
ways held close.
Coughlan has also gift-
ed $1 million to the Shoul-
der Centre at the Ajax
Pickering Hospital. Pater-
son says it's changing the
way health care is deliv-
ered.
"It's a fantastic project
that's really enabled us to
treat so many more pa-
tients, and better," she
says. "It's great for the
staff too, when you know
you've got such great sup-
port from the communi-
ty."
Coughlan chose to do-
nate to the organizations
when he saw a need.
"I guess I figured I got
lucky, and I'd share it
around a bit," he says.
But it wasn't simply
luck that got Coughlan to
where he is today.
His story is one of go-
ing from rags to riches.
His Irish father and En-
glish mother moved to
East York before they
started having children.
Jerry was the youngest of
11.
His father, a hard
worker named Jeremiah,
was a garbage collector,
and when that wasn't
enough to feed his grow-
ing family during the
Great Depression, he
bought cheap land and
turned to farming as well.
The family had both a
home in East York and a
farm in Kenilworth,
where the children and
their mother, Mildred,
spent most of their time.
Eventually, Jeremiah
Coughlan built a home on
some land he purchased,
which turned into a con-
struction business.
Coughlan's wife Lyn
Dunlop-Coughlan ex-
plained when Jerry was
still working on the farm,
he would collect eggs and
sell them door-to-door in
the East York neighbour-
hood. According to a biog-
raphy written by Hugh
Robert MacDonald, Jerry
would sell produce on the
side of the highway, and
take all the odd jobs he
could in his spare time.
He even loaned his mon-
ey, and collected interest
when payment was late,
to his siblings.
Jerry delivered news-
papers, and was one of the
first "rink rats" at the
East York Arena. Cough-
lan was a talented athlete,
and captain of his high
school hockey team.
Jerry's father died of
cancer when the teen was
just 16. He began working
for his brother in the con-
struction business.
Coughlan recalls collect-
ing bricks and chipping
off the mortar as one of
his first responsibilities.
He also was extremely
talented at driving the
backhoe. His hoisting en-
gineer license is one of
Coughlan's proudest ac-
complishments.
Jerry didn't go beyond
Grade 10. The sharp-
minded teen instead
learned from his brother
and father, and asked ac-
complished developers if
he could take a look at
their plans, so he could
learn from the best.
When he was around 20
years old, his mother lent
him $15,000 and he started
up Jerry Coughlan Enter-
prises.
"I bought six lots off a
subdivider," Coughlan re-
calls.
He thought he'd make
$6,000 but ended up earn-
ing $12,000.
"It was a challenge but
it was fun," he says.
And he didn't stop,
building homes in Toron-
to, Scarborough, Durham
Region and even Florida.
His empire includes golf
courses such as Deer
Creek Golf Club, shop-
ping plazas and storage
units.
Despite no degree in
architecture, he designs
many of his develop-
ments, including Deer
Creek.
According to Dunlop-
Coughlan, her husband
never got into the busi-
ness to become the
wealthy man he is today.
"He got up for the chal-
lenge of it and ended up
making money," she says.
To her, his strongest at-
tributes are his humility,
his sense of humour and
his intelligence.
Coughlan has five chil-
dren, 14 grandchildren,
four great grandchildren
and a dog named Rocky.
As long as his "luck"
continues, so will his do-
nations.

PICKERING - One man
remains in hospital with
life-threatening injuries
following a shooting early
Friday in Pickering.
Durham police contin-
ue to seek witnesses as
they investigate the shoot-
ing, outside the Island Mix
bar on Brock Road at
about 2:20 a.m. July 20. A
number of the estimated
160 patrons leaving the bar

man, was walking in a
parking lot outside the bar
when he was involved in
an altercation with a man
sitting in a car, police said.
A shot was fired from
inside the vehicle, police
said. The victim collapsed
and the suspect vehicle
sped away.
Two police officers ar-
rived on the scene soon af-
ter the shooting and per-

until paramedics arrived.
He was rushed to a trauma
centre with what are de-
scribed as life-threatening
injuries.
Police have so far not
provided a description of
the shooter or the vehicle
involved.

PICKERING - Council endorsed the Pick-
ering Museum Village strategic plan in prin-
ciple at the final council meeting before the
summer break.
In late 2016, a steering committee was
struck to develop a five-year strategic plan
for the Pickering Museum Village (PMV).
The strategic-planning steering committee
was comprised of museum staff and volun-
teers, and co-chaired by the co-ordinator of
museum operations, alongside a member of
the PMV advisory committee.
Priorities include preserving artifacts,
knowledge and skills, and site optimization.
Among other goals, by 2023 the following
are expected to be in place at the museum:
opening the new Heritage and Community
Centre, addressing parking and site securi-
ty, and improving site access and connectiv-
ity.
Ward 3 regional Coun. David Pickles
called this "good news for Greenwood."
Ward 1 city Coun. Maurice Brenner
asked what the new community centre will
mean for the Greenwood Community Cen-
tre, which has been identified as surplus.
Director of community services Marisa
Carpino explained it would be demolished
only after all of its uses were accommodated
in the new community centre, and will be re-
placed with a smaller facility with wash-
rooms and storage facilities for the park.
PICKERING MUSEUM LAYS OUT
PRIORITIES IN NEW PLAN
PICKERING - Council
has OK'd in principal the
siting of 10 communica-
tion towers throughout
Seaton.
Three macro towers
are proposed in large com-
munity parks and seven
smaller macro (smacro)
towers are proposed in vil-
lage greens and neigh-
bourhood parks.
Smacro single-carrier
towers, are 15 to 20 metres
high, and the larger, mul-
ti-carrier towers are 40 to
50 metres high.
Staff have concluded
the city's parks are appro-
priate locations for tele-
communication towers.
Bell Mobility had ap-
proached the city about
the matter in 2017, and Bell
is now working with other
carriers to work on a stan-
dard design for the towers.
The current process of
seeking council approval
of all lease agreements
with the telecommunica-
tions providers will re-
main. At the final meeting
before summer break,
council approved staff's
recommendation that
council endorse in princi-
ple the siting of the tele-
communication towers.

LETTERS & COMMENTARYDooley, my canine pad-
dle pal, and I were out tak-
ing a toodle around the
lake the other morning. It
was a cool, overcast day
with the promise of rain
shortly. We hadn't been
out more than a few min-
utes when I heard a sound
that made me smile. A
sound I hadn't heard in a
long while, but which in-
stantly resonated deep
within my DNA. It was the
happy, birdlike chatter of
kids playing board games.
And not just one family,
but many. The acoustics of
the lake are excellent and
as we made our rounds we
were treated, again and
again, to happy, laughing
outbursts and excited,
competitive banter, the
chatter of dice being
rolled around in plastic
cups and cards defiantly
slapped down on Formica
tabletops. Those are mag-
ical sounds. Instantly, I
was seven or eight years
old again, weather-bound
in our cottage and playing
a badly dog-eared version
of Monopoly, Stratego,
Yahtzee or one of those old
staples.
They're great sounds
too because of their inno-
cence. They are almost
anachronistic in their
simplicity and purity.
There were no f-bombs, no
drunken screams, no tes-
tosterone fuelled 'Dude!
Watch this!' We get
enough of those when the
weather is nice and I still
wince every time I hear
one. Again, the acoustics
are excellent. Those
sounds are jarring to me.
Ugly and forced. I realize,
as I read these words now,
that I must sound like an
old fart, but even as a
young man those sounds
held no appeal for me.
But this sound, the
sound of children and
adults ... families; laugh-
ing, talking and being to-
gether was as natural on
the lake as the sound of
the wind and the waves. It
was a sound that belonged
there. A good sound. Like
the sound of someone div-
ing into water or the
nighttime murmur of
voices around a fire.
I sometimes wonder if
thunderstorms and rain
aren't nature's way of
nudging families into
spending some quality
time together. It wouldn't
surprise me. In any event,
it did my heart good to
know that sound is still
alive and well and that
people have not forgotten
entirely how to unplug, sit
down and be kids together.

PICKERING CASINO SITE
ILL-CONCEIVED
To the editor:
Re: Pickering bridge
idea panned by Ajax resi-
dents, July 12
It was only a matter of
time before the question of
additional infrastructure
for the Pickering casino
complex raised its ugly
head. I wonder if the OMB
was aware of this, and the
huge cost associated with
it, when it gave its approv-
al. If so, that approval is
even more inexplicable.
The more we hear about
the designated site for this
development, the more ill-
conceived it becomes. How-
ever, there is a solution for
the future infrastructure
costs (said to be tens of mil-
lions of dollars from un-
identified funding sourc-
es). If Pickering wants a
new overpass/underpass,
Pickering can pay for it. No
one else in the province
needs or wants the new
road and there are far bet-
ter ways to spend our tax
dollars.
The proposed site at
Bayly and Church will nev-
er be an appropriate one
for such a development.
Perhaps appeals to MPP
Rod Phillips and Premier
Doug Ford will persuade
our new, more cost-savvy,
government to do what its
predecessor couldn't do -
use common sense in as-
sessing the project and its
location.

THERE IS SUPPORT IN DURHAM
FOR PEOPLE WITH BRAIN
INJURIES
To the editor:
I am writing today to
raise awareness about
brain injuries and the sup-
port services Durham Re-
gion has to offer.
Brain injuries can hap-
pen to anyone; a car acci-
dent, a fall, being hit in the
head.
When a brain injury
happens we have a re-
source in Durham called
the Brain Injury Associa-
tion of Durham (BIAD).
This is a non-profit re-
source in Durham.
BIAD is a day program
support group. It has a ded-
icated staff to help those
who have a brain injury,
such as someone with a
concussion.
I am thankful for this
non-profit organization in
Durham and I hope, as a
community we educate
ourselves about brain inju-
ries. It is a hidden disabili-
ty, you cannot see it on the
outside like a cast. It's a life-
altering injury.
Together, we can sup-
port each other. For those
who are dealing with a
brain injury be kind to
yourself! We as a commu-
nity need our resources
and support groups. We are
thankful! The Durham
community does care. A
huge thank you to BIAD.
Did you know BIAD was
started by family members
(moms), whose loved ones
had a brain injury?

DURHAM - There's nothing
wrong with vanilla or chocolate
-but if you're looking for a scoop
of something unique on a hot
day, Durham's local ice cream
and gelato joints are serving up
plenty of fun options this sum-
mer. In honour of National Ice
Cream Day on July 15, here's
where you can find five fun fla-
vours in Durham:
-Grape-Nut ice cream at Picker-
ing Village Ice Cream Shoppe
109 Old Kingston Rd., Ajax
This unusual ice cream fla-
vour doesn't include any grapes
or nuts, it's a vanilla ice cream
mixed with Grape-Nuts cereal,
which is made from wheat and
barely and has a nutty taste.
"We sell a lot of it, some days
we sell out," says Pickering Vil-
lage Ice Cream Shoppe owner
David Wang. "I'm not sure why
people like it ... but if the cus-
tomer likes it, then it's good."
Wang says the flavour is pop-
ular in New England and Jamai-
ca and has a growing fan base in
Canada.
-Lemon Basil Ginger Gelato at
Belaggios
705 Kingston Rd., Pickering
This dairy free lemon gelato
has a water base, and is fla-
voured with fresh ginger and ba-
sil. It's a new offering intro-
duced this summer and Belag-
gios owner Daniela Salvino says
it's already popular with cus-
tomers.
"It's very refreshing, a nice
twist on traditional lemon gela-
to," she says.
Salvino loves to try out new
flavour combinations for gelato
and is thinking about coconut
curry next.
-Non-dairy coconut soft serve at
ICETALES
376 Kingston Rd., Pickering
In addition to carrying many
flavours of classic dairy ice
cream, this summer ICETALES
has started offering non-dairy
soft serve to meet the needs of
customers who are vegan or
have a dairy allergy or intoler-
ance.
F lavours rotate frequently -
blood orange was a recent op-
tion - but coconut has become a
quick customer favourite and is
on offer most days.
"I'm vegan myself and it's
very difficult to find vegan stuff
in Pickering," says Yolande Nes-
bitt-McClean, who oversees the
non-dairy offerings at the shop.
She says the new soft serve -
which is also peanut-free - is
creamy with "big coconut fla-
vour."
-One Love gelato at the Perfect
Scoop
158 Water St. Unit 101, Port
Perry
This combination of choco-
late, peanut butter and hemp
hearts started off as an April
Fool's Day joke, and is now a reg-
ular flavour.
Owner Robert Moore says the
hemp hearts have a nutty fla-
vour that compliments the pea-
nut butter and chocolate - "and
they might add a bit of health to
it too," he says.
Hemp hearts are shelled
hemp seeds that are chock full of
essential fatty acids, protein
and amino acids.
Everything at the Perfect
Scoop is custom made and
Moore says the potential for new
flavours is limitless.
"I can make pretty much any-
thing," he says.
-Pralines 'n Cream Ale ice
cream at Cool Cow
359 Simcoe St., Beaverton
Cool Cow is bringing in a new
flavour just in time for National
Ice Cream Day July 15 - Pralines
'n Cream Ale from Kawartha
Dairy, made with beer from
Muskoka Brewery.
According to the official de-
scription, this flavour has "salty
caramel ripple, salty-sweet pra-
line pecans and genuine Musko-
ka Cream Ale."
"It's creamy smooth with a bit
of a nip of ale flavour," says Lois
Shaw, director of programs and
partnerships with Brock Youth
Centre, which runs Cool Cow.
The store, which opened in
2015, is a "social enterprise" that
helps local youth develop job
skills and learn about entrepre-
neurship by selling ice cream.

DURHAM - Work has
kicked off on a three-year
project to bring cooler air
to 29 Durham District
School Board schools.
The DDSB is spending
$17.6 million to fully air-
condition seven existing
schools, and add partial air
conditioning to another 22
schools that currently have
none.
Work is starting this
summer with 10 schools -
Duffin's Bay P.S., Dr. S.J.
Philips P.S., E.A Fairman
P.S., Fairport Beach P.S.,
Stephen Saywell P.S., High-
bush P.S., Uxbridge P.S.,
Lester B. Pearson P.S., Ap-
plecroft P.S. and Roland
Michener P.S - which will
all have air conditioning
added to common areas
such as the main office and
library.
"At the end of the three
years, every single one of
our schools will have a
minimum of the office and
library (air-conditioned),"
says Shawn O'Brien, the
DDSB's senior manager of
facilities services. "We
won't have a school that
doesn't have a respite ar-
ea."
The schools that will
have full air conditioning
added over the next three
years are: Bayview Heights
P.S. and Maple Ridge P.S. in
Pickering, Eagle Ridge P.S.
in Ajax, John Dryden P.S.
in Whitby, Joseph Gould
P.S. in Uxbridge, S.A.
Cawker P.S. in Scugog and
McCaskills Mills P.S. in
Cannington.
"We're making sure that
we have at least a couple
fully air-conditioned
schools within every area,"
O'Brien noted.
He said installing air
conditioning can be incred-
ibly complicated depend-
ing on the age of the build-
ing.
In some cases mechani-
cal systems have to be en-
tirely replaced, with ceil-
ings torn down and new
duct work installed.
Because the work is so
disruptive, it can only be
completed during the short
window of time between
classes ending for summer,
and staff arriving in late
August to get ready for fall
- about seven weeks.
"That's the other hurdle
that we constantly working
with, seven weeks is a real-
ly short time," says O'Bri-
en, adding that work at
some of the schools will
take two summers to com-
plete.
The DDSB unveiled the
three-year air conditioning
plan last November, after
what officials described as
an "exceedingly hot" fall
that left many students,
parents and teachers rais-
ing the alarm over swelter-
ing schools.
Thirteen DDSB schools
already have full air condi-
tioning and 95 have partial
air conditioning, typically
in the library and main of-
fice.
Of the 22 schools with no
air-conditioned spaces in-
side the school, eight have
portables with air condi-
tioning - 14 schools have no
air conditioning anywhere
on site.
The DDSB plans to pay
for the work with funding
from the Ministry of Edu-
cation to renew buildings,
and money from sale of the
former Florence M. Heard
P.S. site in Whitby.
A report says annual op-
erating costs will increase
by about $564,000 as a re-
sult of the additional air
conditioning.
School board officials
say there are no immediate
plans to expand air condi-
tioning to more schools, af-
ter this three-year project
is complete.

WORK STARTS ON $17MILLION PLAN TO ADD AIRCONDITIONING TO SOMEDDSB SCHOOLS
JILLIAN FOLLERT
jfollert@durhamregion.com
Brock Adams looked over plans for the installation of a new air
conditioner in the library of EA Fairman Public School on July
12. The Durham District School Board is embarking on a
three-year plan to add full air conditioning to seven existing
schools and partial air conditioning to an additional 22 schools
that are currently without a cooling system.
