Moderator Joan Wideman asked for the candidates' position on the development of an airport. Pickering-Uxbridge PC Party candidate Peter Bethlenfalvy said the government should release the study by KPMG, which it has stated it was waiting for before mak- ing a final decision. "We need full consultation from all spectrums of the community in terms of people who support an airport, people who don't support an airport," he said. Pickering-Uxbridge NDP candidate Ne- rissa Carino said the party will support any initiative that will provide substantial local jobs. "We do need to consult with everybody involved," she said. She feels an airport would stimulate the economy, however decision makers need to consider everybody's concerns in a dem- ocratic process. Neither Liberal Party candidate from the two ridings attended the debate. Pick- ering-Uxbridge Liberal candidate Ibrahim Daniyal said in an email he did not attend due to a scheduling conflict. He added, as a small-business owner, he understands the challenges that the board of trade mem- bers face and if elected, he will advocate for small business owners and workers alike. When asked about energy conservation and management, Ajax PC party candi- date Rod Phillips said the party supports the refurbishment of Darlington Nuclear Generating Station as well as extending operations at the Pickering Nuclear Gen- erating Station. "But what we won't do is sign ridiculous green energy contracts and fundamental- ly upset our energy capacity for years to come," he said. Ajax NDP candidate Monique Hughes and Pickering-Uxbridge NDP candidate Nerissa Carino spoke of cutting power costs. "The NDP would like to bring it down 30 per cent as well as put it back into Onta- rio," said Hughes. Pickering-Uxbridge PC candidate Peter Bethlenfalvy said the 30 per cent cut in hy- dro costs the NDP is proposing doesn't work mathematically. He said the Liberal plan to borrow $45 billion to $93 billion is "egregious." He said Ontario needs a long-term ener- gy plan. "Our party stance on green energy is we want to repeal the Green Energy Act," Ajax Libertarian party candidate Marsha Haynes said. "It cost us way too much." She said if Ontario continues on the path it's on "we will be overcharged $133 billion within the next decade." Narraway said the Green party wants to provide interest-free loans to homeowners and business owners investing in energy conservation. "We do support the closing of the Picker- ing nuclear station on time and we also do not support the refurbishment of Darling- ton," he said. He said money would be better invested in green technologies, and Ontario would be able to access energy at a third of the cost from water generation in Quebec. At the May meeting, council passed a staff recommendation that Proof Inc. be hired to undertake a public engagement initiative on the economic and employ- ment impact within the Highway 407 corridor. The $150,000 cost will be fund- ed by the Development Charges Admin- istration Studies Reserve Fund and from the Seaton Application Fee Reserve. T his issue was a sore subject in late 2017. In November, a Pickering staff re- port included a "Pickering Airport Fea- sibility Study" costing $150,000 as a rec- ommended development charge in the 2018 budget. T he report came a month after coun- cil chose to officially support an airport, pending the results of an aviation study - a change from its longtime stance against it. The new stance was included in a report on the city's bid to host Ama- zon's second headquarters. Residents were quick to call out the city on this matter, questioning why de- velopment charges would cover a study on an airport that has not been approved by the federal government. Pickering chief administrative offi- cer Tony Prevedel explained it was sim- ply a typo, and the money was for con- sultation purposes regarding the devel- opment of the Highway 407 corridor, which includes both the Pickering Inno- vation Corridor and the potential air- port in Pickering. A recent report to council explained that, in discussions with businesses in an effort to attract high-paying jobs to the Pickering Innovation Corridor, each potential business asked when an air- port will be built in Pickering. Staff had asked Proof Inc. for a pro- posal that would see the development of a comprehensive communications and community outreach strategy that would be grounded in hard data specific to Pickering. The goal of the engage- ment program is to gather detailed in- formation from residents and business-formation from residents and business-f es and provide them with the informa- tion they need to develop an informed opinion. T he City of Pickering's website says all Pickering residents will be invited to participate in the public engagement initiative. Unfavourable weather conditions may in- fluence the work schedule. The road work is being done to support new devel- opment in the area. PICKERING - The City of Pickering has chosen the contractor that will recon- struct the Conservation Barn at the Pickering Mu- seum Village. J.J. McGuire General Contractors Inc. won the bid for $1,553,000, including HST. The total gross pro- ject is expected to cost nearly $1.9 million includ- ing HST. The net project, after the HST rebate, is ex- pected to cost less than $1.7 million. Council approved the tender on May 14. A grant of $450,000 from the Canada Cultural Spac- es Fund will help offset the costs. The building, a barn from the 1970s located at the museum village, is un- insulated and unheated with a concrete slab for flooring and minimal light- ing. The building has no water supply or septic sys- tem. The reconstruction of the conservation building is intended to result in up- grades while retaining as much of the existing struc- ture as possible. The build- ing will become more suit- able to store the museum's larger artifact collections, such as wagons and vehi- cles and an old fire truck that's stored at Pickering's operations centre. City staff estimates 684 agricultural, industrial and transportation arti- facts will be properly housed in the revamped building. Unless some monarch is in the final stages of a rag- ing syphilitic madness or having a wife or two be- headed, I frankly don't find them all that interest-find them all that interest-f ing. Having said that, I did find myself surprisinglyfind myself surprisinglyf engrossed by the recent Royal nuptials. Kathryn, of course, was already up by 6 a.m. and eager to set up any streaming appara- tus necessary to guaran- tee a signal up here above the tree line. This is a tricky bit of business and can involve everything from moving the modemfrom moving the modemf around the house to smudging the room with sage to sacrificing a vir- gin to appease the inter- net gods. It's not a job to be taken lightly either. Kath- ryn doesn't watch a lot of television but when she wants to watch something she has about as much tol- erance for failure as the Russian Olympic commit- tee. After a frozen screen during the Academy Awards one night, I foundAwards one night, I foundA myself putting a lock on the knife drawer. For both of our sakes, I knew I had to make this happen. Luckily, the gods were smiling on us that morn- ing and, in short order we were happily watching the arrival of the who's who of society. Now, had it been merely that; a collec- tion of celebrities attend- ing some function or oth- er, regardless of how fes- tive or dazzling, I doubt- less would've walked away. But, I realized very shortly, there was some- thing else at play here, something far more semi- nal and basic to human DNA than George Clooney or Elton John. There was a rich, mythical aspect to the event that called out, with a voice as old as time, to anyone watching. The pageantry, the ritual and the history of the thing resonated deeply with both of us. As Kathryn said, on more than one oc- casion, it was like watch- ing a fairy tale come true. And, as anyone who has ever read Joseph Campbell will tell you, these stories are always more than simple tales. They are evocative of truths ingrained deep within us. The shining knight, the beautiful prin- cess, the castles and the happily ever after. And, say what you will about Megan, Harry and the whole deal. This world could use a little more happily ever after. –Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this columnfor this columnf The Royal wedding, a fairy tale come true Columnist Neil Crone says the nuptials resonated with him NEIL CRONE Column Reader wonders if the DDSB will be allowing religious curriculums in its schools To the editor: Re: DDSB testing out Muslim perspectives cur-Muslim perspectives cur-M riculum resource, news, April 19April 19A It has been my under- standing that the Dur- ham District School Board or any public school in Ontario has no religious affiliations whatsoever. Isn't that why the Lord's Prayer was taken out of the public school system? Then why is the issue of religion being brought up? This article states that Oshawa trustee, Linda Stone, questioned wheth- er other religions will al- so be represented in cur- riculum resources. So am I to understand that the DDSB will be al- lowing religious curricu- lum in their schools? And if this is correct, why doesn't the article read "all religions perspec- tives," and not just Mus- lim perspectives? It seems to me that the school boards are cater- ing to a certain group and that is why this has be- come an issue. A lot of time and money is being spent that shouldn't be an issue in a public school system. Marjorie Seymour Pickering Durham needs more information on Lyme disease, says reader To the editor: Last year my six-year- old began feeling under the weather. Complaining of a headache, joint pain and tiredness. I noticed a bullseye on his right upper arm. I took him immediately to a clin- ic and was told it was a hive. I went to three differ- ent clinics, stressing that I thought he had Lyme dis- ease. However we never did see a tick. The third clinic agreed to do a blood test even though the physician stat- ed I was wasting his time. I eventually emailed the Lyme Disease Associ- ation of Canada. I sent them pictures of the rash which has now spread over his entire body. They gave me the information I needed to get my son treatment. Eventually I was noti- fied by the health depart-fied by the health depart-f ment that he did test posi- tive for Lyme disease. It took four doctors and three weeks to diagnose it. No one listened. Bottom line, if you feel like no one is listening, keep pushing. If I had left it my son would have been at risk for getting very sick! Which is why she is question- ing the fact that her children's school recently hosted a Pizza Nova pizza making workshop, during class time. "I think it sends mixed mes- sages," says Bauer, whose chil- dren are in junior kindergarten and Grade 2. "They're telling us not to send things like juice box- es, but they're making pizza in class? How does that make sense?" Bauer is one of several local parents who have raised ques- tions about the popular Pizza No- va workshops, which have been offered in Ontario elementary schools for more than 20 years. Andrea Miller, a parent and registered dietician based in Whitby, recently became aware of the workshops, after reading a blog post by Ottawa family doctor Yoni Freedhoff, who notes "I don't think schools should be provid- ing the food industry, or any in- dustry for that matter, with ac- cess to our children." As a dietician, Miller says she is concerned about claims from parents that the workshops in- volve discussing how pizza fits in- to the four food groups. "Many young children cannot differentiate between healthy food choices and foods that offer little nutrition. Many children grow up in homes where food choices are limited for a variety of complex reasons," she says. "It is for these and many other rea- sons, that I am concerned about a pizza company, providing any nutrition information to young children." According to Pizza Nova, the workshops - which are booked at the request of a teacher - include information on the "importance of nutrition and a well-balanced diet consisting of the four food groups" and provide students with a behind the scenes look at pizza making. "We do them so that students can have a hands on experience with real pizza dough while learning the importance of good hygiene and food preparation" says Pizza Nova president Do- menic Primucci. "We talk about washing their hands before cook- ing or preparing a meal. Students also learn about the ingredients that go into making the dough. During the course of the dough stretching our demonstrators en- gage with the students and in- quire about their favourite top- pings on pizzas at which point they may ask 'what food group' does that fall into." At the end of the workshop, students receive a complimenta- ry slice of cheese pizza and a "fun pack" that includes an activity book, certificate and a coupon for a free small pizza. Primucci adds that the compa- ny works to accommodate stu- dents who are dairy or gluten in- tolerant. "While this is not a board-wide initiative, we are aware that the program is offered as an educa- tional opportunity for kindergar- ten students, incorporating liter- acy, numeracy, measurement, following instructions, fine mo- tor development, life skills and other fundamentals to learning" the Durham Catholic District School Board said in a statement. "Students manipulate the dough as part of the learning experi- ence, then it is saved for further sensory play. The pizza that is served to the students is made with fresh whole wheat dough and turkey pepperoni." The Durham District School Board did not respond to requests for comment about the work- shops. "I think if schools are going to be teaching kids about healthy eating and telling parents to only send healthy food for lunch and snacks ... then this is ridiculous" Bauer says. "They can't have it both ways." The Pizza Nova website indi- cates that more than 600 work- shops were conducted at more than 120 schools last year. EDUCATION Pizza making 101 in Durham schools?
