A grant from the provincial government will help improve se- niors programs at George Ashe Library and Community Centre. "We got named as one of the 40 centres across Ontario that will be a seniors active living centre," said Sharon Milton, Pickering's manager of recreation services. Pickering-Scarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles recently made the announcement on be- half of the Minister of Seniors Af- fairs at the community centre. As a result, the municipality will receive $42,700 to put toward the programming. With this expansion, Ontario now supports programs at more Hi-Sook Barker taught a Seniors Art Class in the Art Studio of the Pickering Recreation Complex April 27. Ontario is helping seniors stay active and connected to their communities by investing in up to 40 new Seniors Active Living Complex across the province. These programs offer se- niors a range of activities tailored to the unique in- terests and needs of the community - from exercise classes to music clubs, workshops on video editing to the use of community kitchens, along with a number of social outings. Pickering plans to intro- duce a number of new pro- grams to benefit all seniors in Pickering. "It's no longer just, you have to go down to the se- niors centre," said Milton. "We're really expanding in- to the community." Milton said Pickering continues to support the seniors clubs throughout the city and will continue to do so. This funding al- lows for a wide range of se- niors to participate at the city facility. Milton said Pickering is working to keep seniors in their homes for as long as possible. "That's what they want and that's what we've heard from seniors," she said. She said many seniors are looking for things to help them stay active and connected in the communi- ty. "If we can keep the se- niors connected in the community, it helps them remain healthy," she said. And seniors today are looking for a wider range of activities. "There has been a major change in what seniors are looking for," Milton said. "It's not just about enter- tainment anymore. It's about being active and learning things." Active and educational programs top the list. "We really, really want to encourage seniors to come out to our activities," Milton said. Pickering gets a lot of the ideas through its se- niors advisory committee, the Seniors 55-plus Volun- teer Council, which is com- prised of 15 volunteers from the target group and is supported by Pickering staff. The council was formed in 2016 to advise the community services de- partment on the immedi- ate and future needs of resi- dents aged 55 and up. "We're really successful in our youth program, and how we're ... looking at the other side and making sure we're doing that for our old- er folks in the community as well," said Milton. Pickering has been looking out for the interest of seniors in recent years, as the population of older adults in the city continues to grow. As one example, in 2017, Pickering council en- acted the Low-Income Se- niors and Low-Income Per- sons with Disabilities Property Tax grant bylaw. The program saved low-in- come seniors and people with disabilities $200 on their taxes this year. This year council voted to in- crease it to $300. An investigation into the incident and what may have motivated the suspect contin- ues, Durham police said. Po- lice are unable to immediate- ly comment on what led up to the incident, spokesperson Jodi MacLean said Monday. Officers were called to a Boston Pizza outlet on Brock Road at about 11:20 p.m. for a report of a driver who was seen trying to intentionally hit pedestrians, MacLean said. "Patrons called to say he was driving erratically," she said. "It was very noticeable that he was driving danger- ously." As police arrived a suspect was seen fleeing on foot. An officer chased a man down and placed him under arrest. Jahvon Desilva, 21, of Village Green in Scarborough is charged with dangerous driv- ing, breach of recognizance and cocaine possession. Mac- Lean said police continue to examine the accused person's actions and explore what may have led to the incident occurring. To celebrate transpar- ency, accountability and participation in govern- ment, Pickering launched its Interactive City Maps and Open Data portals, providing the public with easy access to its data, in- cluding information on community centres, ward boundaries, facilities, parks and other points of interest. "It's important that wherever possible, we do our best to connect citi- zens with government and civic life," said Mayor Dave Ryan. "Community en- g agement is one of our cor- porate priorities, and this is another step forward in bringing us closer to citi- zens and showcasing open and accountable leader- ship." "If it was puppies and kittens people would be throwing money at us," said director of Indian River Reptile Zoo Bry Loyst. That's why life-size dinosaurs have roared their way into the low- er level of the Pickering Town Cen- tre. A dinosaur exhibit supporting the reptile zoo and sanctuary will run now through Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13. It's $5 to enter and all funds go toward the sanctuary. "Some reptiles have been around since the dinosaurs," said Loyst. Since some reptiles are as an- cient as the now-extinct dino- saurs, the zoo and sanctuary thought an exhibit about the pop- ular species would be a popular draw. The exhibit showcases a collec- tion of 20-plus life-size dinosaurs, some of which even move and roar, creating a thrilling and education- al experience for all ages to enjoy. The exhibit is designed to attract young and old and provide dona- tion support for the reptile sanctu- ary to help look after abandoned reptiles. The Indian River Reptile Zoo is a registered charity that res- cues and provides sanctuary for hundreds of reptiles. "We have over 100 crocodilians alone," said Loyst. The zoo and sanctuary focuses its efforts on reptile conservation. Presenting a variety of reptile species at the zoo, it gives visitors an opportunity to see animals they would not see anywhere else in Canada. Each an- imal the sanctuary maintains helps contribute to the future of its own species, raising awareness to its plight and functioning within regulated breeding programs. The sanctuary does not buy, sell or trade animals with the general public. "They stay here for their entire lives," said Loyst. It also provides life-saving anti- dotes for snake bites. The current exhibit is located on the lower lev- el, near centre court at the Picker- ing Town Centre, 1355 Kingston Rd., Pickering. The zoo and sanctuary itself is located about 15 minutes east of Pe- terborough. To learn more, visit reptile- zoo.org. He's wan- gled himself employment at a remote mountain lodge up in the heart of the Rock- ies. And I mean, remote. The only way in is on a chartered shuttle or a 15-ki- lometre walk on a gravel road. There is no internet, no cell coverage. It's a little like stepping back in time - a time when there was still gourmet food and vintage wine, mind you - but still. I told him, as we were exchanging mailing ad- dresses, that I envied him. He was going to rediscov- er the pleasures of written correspondence, both sending and receiving. And he was going to expe- rience the emotion of ac- tually missing people - something most of us, with our constant stream of texts, tweets, emails and posts, don't get to do anymore. We are never more than a click away from instant communica- tion. And, as marvellous as that is, a price has been paid for it. As we were talking, he told me that he and his girlfriend had suddenly come to the abrupt real- ization of what was about to happen to them this summer. There would be no "Text me when you ar- rive" or "Shoot me an email with some pics!" or even "Call me as soon as you're settled." This was going to go down "old school." "See you in the fall," "Oh my gosh, I'm go- ing to miss you" and "Please write me every day." What wonderful words! "Please write me every day." As for me, I can't wait. I'm thrilled to have a real reason to sit and write him every day, or at least once a week. To sit, thoughtfully, and distil my days into meaningful, handwritten moments. To imagine his pleasure at receiving those fat enve- lopes. To picture him sit- ting in the sun on some rocky outcrop with the world at his feet, a cool, mountain breeze riffling the pages, and a smile on his face. I never feel that way about sending an email. And then, of course, there is the equal delight of receiving a letter or two from him. Letters that, I suspect, I will hang on to for the rest of my days. –Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column. Rediscovering the joy of letter writing Columnist Neil Crone is looking forward to snail mailing his son this summer NEIL CRONE Column Is the Green party the only answer for Ontario? To the editor: For the most part, I do not comment on elections and who someone is voting for. You are allowed to vote for whom you wish. Most of the people I know would not mind a Lib- eral government in Onta- rio, and some would vote Progressive Conservative, but almost everyone I have spoken to would not like Kathleen Wynne as our pre- mier. Some people are voting PC just to get another party in power, regardless of who they think might be up for the job. For most people who have a common sense, they will try and deduce who would be best for the job. One thing that Kathleen Wynne may have going for her is comparing Doug Ford to our south of the bor- der president, Donald Trump. That way of cam- paigning may very well backfire on her, as it did for Hillary Clinton, and believe it or not the campaign has not even started. One question I do have is if a person votes for Doug Ford, is the voter looking for something different, or just another politician spending taxpayers' money and putting us further into debt in this province? Although most people do not want a Liberal govern- ment under Kathleen Wynne, they do not want a PC or NDP government ei- ther. Where does that leave us? Green party? Ron Horner Oshawa Diversity no problem at DDSB To the editor: Re: Durham school board staff mostly white, heterosexual, women: cen- sus, news, March 24 I am somewhat at a loss as to how to respond to the article and the direction that the Durham District School Board (DDSB) seems to be going in. My first comment would be that while I favour diver- sity, I do not favour it over competence. A second observation is that the figures presented only have meaning when compared with the demo- graphics of Durham Re- gion. The best statistics I could find show 97 per cent of the population is hetero- sexual. Is it any surprise then that the DDSB would be mostly heterosexual? Visible minorities com- prise some 21 per cent of the population, so is it surpris- ing that the DDSB would be "mostly white"? Then take a look at the respondents, of whom only 22 per cent were male, while the population of Durham is 49 per cent male. Now there is a clear discrepancy between the demographics of the DDSB and the population of the region. Figures or statistics have meaning only in a larger context. The article would seem to be alarming, suggesting there exists a problem. It may well be, however, following a closer look, none exists and that staff diversity is already fairly representative of the community. That's the premise behind Durham Region works depart- ment's Reuse Days. The first Re- use Day of the year is set for Satur- day, May 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's a chance for residents to drop off reusable items, free of charge. The items are then donat- ed to Habitat for Humanity Re- Stores (Ajax, Oshawa and Ux- bridge locations), and Canadian Diabetes Association or the Sal- vation Army Thrift Store. Reuse Days is a program to help divert quality, reusable items from the waste stream, in- cluding clothing, textiles, furni- ture, appliances, cabinets, count- ertops and most other reusable renovation materials. Only good-quality items, deemed to be suitable for reuse by charities, will be accepted. Gar- bage, household hazardous waste and unwanted electronics will not be accepted. Materials re- fused by charities must be re- moved by residents or disposed of at one of the region's waste man- agement facilities (fees will ap- ply). The Reuse Day is being held at the Durham Region Waste Man- agement Call Centre, 4600 Gar- rard Rd., Whitby. For more information, visit www.durham.ca/wasteevents or call 1-800-667-5671 or download the Durham Region Waste app. DURHAM Durham holding first Reuse Day of season KEITH GILLIGAN KGilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM - It's hard to improve on the perfection that is mac and cheese - but some local high school stu- dents recently gave it a try, racing against the clock to create unique versions of the classic comfort food. On April 21, 11 teams of high school students squared off in the fourth annual Epic Mac 'n' Cheese Competition at Durham College's W. Galen Weston Centre for Food. The event, organized by the college's special events management program, tasked teens with choosing a combination of noodles, cheese, protein and sea- sonings, then racing to whip up their dish with support from Durham Col- lege culinary students and faculty. Attendees at the event taste tested the results, and voted on their favourites. This year's top pick was a combination of spicy shrimp, crab, three chees- es, jalapeño and spices cre- ated by Ryan Bellingham from O'Neill CVI in Osha- wa and Taryn Moore from Kenner CVI in Peterbor- ough. "It was really good. We had people coming for sec- onds and thirds and fourths," says Bellingham, 17. The Grade 12 student is currently taking a culi- nary course at Durham College through the Onta- rio Youth Apprenticeship Program, working toward a goal of one day opening his own café. He says the competition was a good chance to hone his skills and practice working under pressure. Students competing in the event had a chance to win a bursary toward a cu- linary, hospitality or spe- cial events program at Durham College, as well as prizes donated by local res- taurants and industry partners. "Cooking is a life skill, whether you're making meals at home or in a world-class restaurant, and this competition is all about encouraging stu- dents' passion for the culi- nary arts early on," says chef Peter Lee, a faculty member and program co- ordinator at the Centre for Food. "The experience of competing like this is a lot of fun, but it's also a forum for inspiring young chefs to experiment in the kitch- en and exposing them to the opportunities out there to turn their interest in cooking into a career." Second place was awarded to Tasha Webbe and Bailey Lavallee of Hen- ry Street High School in Whitby and third place went to Linda Prenaj from Archbishop Denis O'Con- nor Catholic High School in Ajax. But I had no trouble pictur- ing a trillion trees wrap- ping our beautiful blue planet in a vibrant green blanket, maybe as lush and healthy as what flourished here before Homo sapiens starting burning, cutting and clearing trees every- where we went. What a fabulous goal, planting such a forest! Trees, after all, are the skin of the earth, managing the water cycles and tables and absorbing tons of car- bon dioxide every day, while pumping out life-giv- ing oxygen. Just what we need to combat global warming. And here's a kid who gets that - Felix Finkbeiner, a teen from a village in Ba- varia who, in 10 short years, helped instigate what's already the biggest tree-planting effort in Earth's history. Felix was nine years-old when he heard of Wangeri Maathai receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her Green Belt Movement in Africa, wom- en planting tens of millions of trees to reverse defores- tation there. Why not schoolchildren? Felix thought. He gave a speech at a school assembly, in- spiring classmates to help, and planted a tree out front. Then kept planting trees and giving speeches, founding Plant for the Planet, where school kids from 120 different coun- tries planted a million trees in their homelands. My hero is 19 now, and in- strumental in some 15 bil- lion saplings being planted since 2006. "Stop talking, start planting" is Felix's motto. And it can be ours. The 2016 census recorded 645,860 people living in Durham Region. If we each plant one tree a year for five years somewhere in Dur- ham's vast acreage of 2500 square kilometres, we'd add three million trees to Felix's total, doing our part to make this world a much greener, cooler place. Durham Region McDonald's owners have pledged $500,000 to support the new centre, with McHappy Day's donations be- ing a first step toward the total. On Wednesday, May 2, with every pur- chase of a Big Mac, Happy Meal or any hot McCafe beverage, McDonald's donated $1 to a Ronald McDonald house or local charity. Last year, eight Durham McDonald's partnered with Grandview for McHappy Day. This year, 22 McDonald's participated. According to Brandy Reid, Grandview's community engagement and fundraising co-ordinator, all Durham locations will be donating to Grandview next year. Reid said the day was impressive, with more than 80 volunteers helping, as well as seeing all of public's support throughout the day. "It was an amazing turnout. We had so much community support," she said. Stefanie Swinson, Grandview's commu- nication and marketing manager, said the day was fantastic seeing all of the support and donations. "I cannot explain how wonderful it was to see all of the support we had," said Swinson. She saw a teacher from a Bowmanville school walk her entire class down to McDo- nald's during lunch hour. She said at that time, the restaurant was standing-room on- ly. To show their thanks, the lobby at the new Grandview's Children Centre will be named after McDonald's. Unifor Local 222 an- nounced Friday, May 4 that an agreement was rat- ified by 72 per cent. About 320 members of Unifor Local 222 went on strike on Saturday, April 28, with wages as the main issue. Striking workers were told earlier this week to accept a deal or the plant would be closed. The Ajax site makes seats for the Chrysler plant in Brampton. The Brampton assembly plant has stopped production due to the Lear strike. Workers overwhelming rejected a tentative deal on Tuesday, May 1. Dani Kovacevic said the company took the tenta- tive deal off the table after the vote, but on Thursday, the company reintroduced the deal, along with the threat to close the facility. "This morning they're saying the deal is back on the table. We said no thanks. We want equality and a fair wage," she said. Workers at the Ajax site make an average of $23.50 an hour, while workers at the Lear site in Whitby make $28.10. "We believe it's a scare tactic. We came into this prepared for it," she add- ed, noting not only is the strike affecting Chrysler, but all of the car compa- ny's other suppliers. "The entire supply line is affected because of this," Kovacevic noted. "We don't know what is going to happen. Produc- tion (at Chrysler) is down today and tomorrow. It won't be back until Mon- day," she said. She added the company is "trying to push an un- fair deal on us. They have the money to pay their CEO $32 million." Rob Baker said the union faced similar tactics during the last contract negotiations four years ago. "It's fear and scare. They try to shove it down our throats," Baker added. In 2010, the company succeeded in cutting 44 per cent from wage and pension cuts, Kovacevic said. The company couldn't be reached for comment. NEWS Lear Ajax workers ratify new contract KEITH GILLIGAN KGilligan@durhamregion.com Unifor Local 222 members at the Lear Ajax facility are voting on a tentative deal on Tuesday, May 1 to end a three-day strike. The 320 workers hit the picket lines on Saturday after the two sides couldn't reach an agreement. The facility makes seats used at the Chrysler plant in Brampton. Pickering-Uxbridge MP Jennifer O'Connell announced on May 2 that a re- cently approved public transit project will have positive effects in Durham. The funding will accelerate the pur- chase of 53 bi-level coaches. This purchase will support the expansion of GO Train services and enable Metrolinx to meet forecasted service levels beyond 2018. The project is expected to improve passenger mobility, as well as operational efficiency, accessibility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Government of Canada is provid- ing more than $93 million through the Pub- lic Transit Infrastructure Fund for this project while the province of Ontario is providing the remaining costs. "Today's announcement is yet another demonstration of the Government of Cana- da's support for Durham Region residents and the public services they count on," O'Connell said. "Every day, thousands of people in our communities use the GO Train to get to and from work, school or anywhere else they need to be. Building af- fordable and efficient transit infrastruc- ture is pivotal to growing the middle class, supporting our residents and creating the jobs and opportunities they deserve." These 53 coaches are part of a larger or- der of 125 coaches. The first vehicle deliv- ery is expected later this year.
