PICKERING - Two new spaces
meant to inspire creativity in
Pickering have officially opened
their doors.
The new arts studio at the
Pickering Recreation Complex
and the makerspace at the cen-
tral library both launched all
they have to offer at special cele-
brations on April 18.
"It's clean and bright and wel-
coming and ready to go," manag-
er of recreation services Sharon
Milton said of the new arts stu-
dio.
The former pottery studio
now offers a wide variety of art
programs, craft programs and of
course, pottery, for all ages and
Chantel Clayton demonstrated to Rich Powell some of the techniques used to mix music during the official opening of the Maker
Space at the Pickering Public Library's central branch on April 18. The space provides residents with a variety of equipment to
use such as 3D printers, recording studio equipment to mix music, a sound booth to create music or podcasts, a sewing machine, a
button maker and more.

A number of pottery

when they learned Dur-
ham West Arts Centre Inc.
(DWAC), which formerly
operated the pottery stu-

year early. They feared the
pottery studio would close.
Instead, staff decided to
create a collaborative
space for all types of art.
Now, spring 2018 art
programs for children,
adults, and seniors will op-
erate out of the new studio.
In addition the studio is of-
fering new pottery pro-fering new pottery pro-f
grams, and a number of
others including jewelry
creations and infused oils.
The studio features pot-
tery instructors from
DWAC.
"Obviously, they know
the most about how the op-

Milton. "They're all on
board and offering pro-
grams, which is great."
Summer 2018 will see a
new specialty arts camp
program for children aged
seven to 12 years where
they will have the opportu-

painting, using their imag-

"There was a lot of inter-

People of all ages came
out to the opening. As with
the arts studio, people of

"People are learning
quickly and constantly."
It supports a sharing
economy and will help

works by providing them
with access to equipment
and resources that would
be an economic barrier for
any one individual to own.
"One of the reasons pub-
lic libraries exists is to
make sure everyone has
access to the tools that
help make their lives bet-

community regardless of
ability to pay or ability to
use equipment," said li-

officer Cathy Grant. "We're
here to help people."
Makerspaces are mak-
ing their way around dif-
ferent libraries in Ontario, ferent libraries in Ontario,f
and while each one offers
different equipment, they
adhere to core principles
that make them highly
valuable to their respec-
tive communities. Maker-
spaces support critical
thinking, creativity, and
experimentation. They
support 21st century learn-
ing styles - collaborative,
visual, and hands-on.
They encourage informa-
tion sharing and help to
grow a community of
learners and entrepre-
neurs.
Pickering's makerspace
offers a variety of tools
that were identified in con-
sultation with Pickering
residents.
"We actually consulted
with over 600 residents
(and) members of our com-
munity to find out what
they wanted in a maker-
space," said Grant.
Features include 3D
printers, a Carvey, which
creates wood and plastic
carvings, a vinyl cutter, a
large format printer, ana-
log to digital conversion
equipment, a DJ station, a
book binder, and a button
maker. How these tools get
used is only limited by
one's imagination. The
new sound proof recording
booth will help podcasters,
musicians, and singers
create. The creative work-
stations will offer a wide
range of software to sup-
port activities like music

PICKERING - Those op-
posed to the continued oper-
ation of the Pickering Nu-
clear Generating Station
spoke before council at the
latest meeting.
Jack Gibbons, Ontario
Clean Air Alliance (OCAA)
chair, shared the presenta-
tion he recently gave at the
Pickering library.
"As you know, the Pick-
ering nuclear station is one
of the oldest and largest sta-
tions in North America and
it is also surrounded by
more people than any other
nuclear station on the conti-
nent," he told council.
He said a study conduct-
ed recently by Ian Fairlie,
radiation biologist from the
U.K, indicates a Fukushi-U.K, indicates a Fukushi-U
ma-type disaster at the sta-
tion could lead to 26,000 can-
cers and $125 billion in lost
home values.
More than 650,000 people
and 154,000 homes would
have to be evacuated for 30
to 100 years in the Greater
Toronto Area.Toronto Area.T
Ward 3 regional Coun.Ward 3 regional Coun.W
David Pickles asked Gib-
bons to clarify that Picker-
ing is a different plant than
Fukushima.
Gibbons agreed it is, but
emphasized they are both
nuclear plants.
Pickles also pointed out
Fukushima was caused by
an earthquake and tsuna-
mi. Gibbons said he has
earthquake insurance on
his home and believes it's a
possibility.
The plant is scheduled to
close Aug. 31, but operator
Ontario Power Generation
is applying to extend opera-
tions to Aug. 31, 2028.
Public hearings already
took place on April 4 in Otta-
wa and more are set for June
26 to June 28 in Courtice.
Janet McNeill, Durham
Nuclear Awareness co-ordi-
nator, also presented her
concerns about the plant.
She questions why the hear-
ings are taking place in
Courtice, not Pickering.
"A reasonable thing to be
curious about," she said.
OPG plans to operate the
Pickering station until the
end of 2024. The licence term
between 2024 and 2028 will
allow for safe storage activ-
ities.
Ward 1 regional Coun.Ward 1 regional Coun.W
Kevin Ashe asked if OCAAKevin Ashe asked if OCAAK
will be a party at the reli-
censing hearing, to which
Gibbons said yes.
Canada's nuclear regula-
tor, the Canadian Nuclear
Safety Commission (CNSC),
has granted funding for
OCAA to provide expert evi-
dence, which will be Fair-
lie's report.
Pickering resident Mike
Borie spoke before council,
and criticized council's in-
teraction with Pickering
Nuclear's deputy site vice
president Steve Gregoris,
who gave a presentation in
March. Borie said some
councillors shared opinions
at an inappropriate time.
"Questions should not be
posed in such a way as to
draw out information that
was not discussed or men-
tioned during the delega-
tion's presentation," he said.
Ward 1 city Coun. Mau-Ward 1 city Coun. Mau-W
rice Brenner asked McNeill
to explain the accountabili-
ty factor of the CNSC, which
will be making the decision
on the licence request.
McNeill said theoretical-
ly, the CNSC is accountable
to all residents and reports
to the federal government.
"CNSC has admitted that
they've never turned down a
licence," she said, adding it
is funded 70 per cent by nu-
clear operators.
"So you kind of don't bite
the hand that feeds you," she
said.
In the March presenta-
tion Gregoris said the cur-
rent performance at the
Pickering station is the best
in its history and noted the
likelihood of an accident is
low.
"It would be arrested ear-
lier and we would not see
the same (disaster) as we
saw with Fukushima," he
said.

OPINION
•LETTERS & COMMENTARY •
D r. King and Rosa Parks must be spinning in
their graves. I have a hunch actually, that they've
n ever really stopped spinning. Things really
h aven't changed all that much. The idiocy that
recently transpired at a Star-
b ucks in the ironically named
City of Brotherly Love certainly
h as me spinning. My head won't
s top shaking.
How is what happened at this
coffee shop any different than
s omething that might've gone
d own in Selma 50 years ago? Two
b lack men were arrested for the
c rime of what? Not purchasing a
c offee until their friend arrived?
M inding their own business? Using the washroom?
How many of you reading this, have been in this
exact same situation? You make an appointment to
m eet someone at a public place. You get there a
little early and don't want to order until your
friend or associate arrives. friend or associate arrives. f
No problem. This has happened to me dozens of
times and I've never been asked to leave and I've
certainly never had to leave in cuffs. But I'm
white.
I think what is really galling me at this point is
that the police in these situations never seem to
s top and see the people in front of them.
I know theirs is a difficult job, but does it never
o ccur to them that they are making a mistake?
T hat they might actually be in error?
C ops have the power to arrest and carry a fire-
a rm but could they not also be endowed with the
p ower to say 'sorry' or even 'oops'?
Wouldn't it have been wonderful if the video we
h ave all watched a million times showed the offi-
cers walking in, talking easily with the two black
g entlemen, actually listening to the man who ar-
rived, who in fact was the friend they were meet-
ing, maybe sharing an apologetic laugh with all of
them and then turning and slapping the cuffs on
the bigoted twit who dialed 911 and frog-marching
h is ignorant ass out the door for wasting every-
o ne's time. This is a big deal, folks.
T ry putting yourself in the shoes of those two
m en, just for a moment.
I f you're white, you probably can't, can you?
A nd that's the problem.

The Ajax Downs
location is better
than Pickering
To the editor:To the editor:T
A large can of red her-
rings is being fed to residents
and decision-makers regard-
ing the proposed new casino
complex.
All the advantages touted
for the proposed casino com-for the proposed casino com-f
plex in Pickering will be
roughly the same, no matter
the location. There will be as
many jobs during construc-
tion and operation of the fa-
cility, and income is likely to
be the same for the region no
matter where it is situated.
The only debatable point
is the location of the facility,
and the proposed option is, at
best, ill-conceived. Neither
the Ontario Municipal Board
(OMB) nor the Wynne gov-
ernment are known for their
reasoned thinking, and this
is yet another example. I sug-
gest they all sit at the corner
of Bayly and Church for just
one day, and they will quickly
understand what a disas-
trous decision this is.
The Ajax Downs location
is primed for development, is
more central and more easily
accessible, with suitable
feeder roads and highwaysfeeder roads and highwaysf
401 and 412 not far away. Cou-
pling the casino complex
with the existing racing facil-
ity will create a more bal-
anced facility with broader
appeal, but the decision-mak-
ers seem oblivious to this.
In the end, perhaps only a
change in government could
add reason to the equation
and reverse a decision that
will lead to traffic chaos in
the beginning and more in-
frastructure costs in the fu-frastructure costs in the fu-f
ture.

Changing the location
of Ajax Downs
fuelled by greed
The recent news of the im-
minent closure of the Ajax
Downs Slots/Casino is quite
simply beyond the pale.To
the editor:
The recent news of the im-
minent closure of the Ajax
Downs Slots/Casino is quite
simply beyond the pale. To
think that one of the most
successful casinos in Ontario
is about to be "mothballed" at
the ripe old age of 12 and
trumped by a newer develop-
ment is unbelievable!
A decision based on
greased palms and politics
rather than common sense
and goodwill is inexcusable.
The footprint of this new de-
velopment is dependent on a
buffer zone which goes be-
yond the boundaries of theyond the boundaries of they
proposed development, as
well as non-existent infra-
structure. It will have a huge
and far-reaching impact on
existing neighbourhoods and
developments. Is this good
policy and planning?
Do we not owe our planet
and future generations a vi-
sion of sustainable develop-
ment, rather than continu-
ously changing the flavour of
the day based on the short-
sightedness of the human
race who are only fuelled by
political and monetary
greed? Shades of 1984 when
the "Party" was not interest-
ed in the good of others; but
solely in power for its own
sake. "Change is one thing,
progress is another," as stat-
ed by Bertolt Brecht.
Those responsible for
such irresponsible planning
and approval should be
ashamed of themselves.

DURHAM - Ford Nation
made a stop in Ajax
Wednesday to rally theWednesday to rally theW
troops.
With about 250 people in
attendance at La Roya Ban-
quet Hall on April 18, Pro-
gressive Conservative
Leader Doug Ford said,
"Together, we will make
sure we turn this province
around. We'll blaze a trail
of prosperity, growth and
opportunity for each and
every person."
Ford, joined by PC can-
didates from across Dur-
ham Region, said, "We're
going to turn the province
around. Together, we'll
turn it around and leave no
stone unturned anywhere.
"Once we move forward,
there's a lot of smart people
sitting in the front row," he
said of the PC candidates.
"People like you will help
turn this province around.
We can't do this alone. WeWe can't do this alone. WeW
need each and every one of
you to go out and tell your
families and friends aboutfamilies and friends aboutf
our plan. We want to turn
the province around and
make it the most prosper-
ous region."
Ford didn't speak about
any local issues, but in a
published story, he said he
was open to meeting with
people to resolve the casi-
no fight between Ajax and
Pickering.
"We are going to sit
down and meet with both
groups. I'm certain we will
work out something posi-
tive for Ajax and Pickering.
My door is always open to
talk to both groups. We will
work something out, but at
the end of the day, they are
both going to be happy,"
Ford said.
In an interview, Rod
Phillips, the PC candidate
in Ajax, said the recent
proposal by quarter horse
racing industry to build a
large casino in Pickering
while leaving the smaller
operation in Ajax has mer-
it.
"It's a creative proposal
and fits the OLG's (Ontario
Lottery and Gaming)
framework. It will keep theframework. It will keep thef
quarter horse racing alive.
Doug and I have said we'll
will both look at it," Phil-
lips said.
The Ontario Liberal
Party put out a press re-
lease Wednesday evening
calling Phillips the "Godfa-
ther of OLG Moderniza-
tion."
Phillips was the CEO of
OLG when the moderniza-
tion process was launched.
Ajax-Pickering MPPAjax-Pickering MPPA
Joe Dickson stated in the
release, "I've seen charla-
tans come and go in my
time serving the communi-
ty of Ajax. But for a guy
who lives in Toronto to
come in and pretend to be
Ajax's saviour when heAjax's saviour when heA
created this plan in the
first place is just ridicu-first place is just ridicu-f
lous."
During his address,
Ford said helping people
find a job will be a priorityfind a job will be a priorityf
for his government.for his government.f
"The only way to help
people find a job is to create
an environment for compa-
nies to come to Ontario and
open up. What we've seen
for 15 years hasn't been anfor 15 years hasn't been anf
environment for creating
jobs. To the contrary, we've
lost 300,000 manufacturing
jobs here in Ontario."
Red tape, high hydro
costs and a carbon tax are
keeping companies from
locating here, he added.
A PC government would
reduce the business tax
rate from 11 and a half per
cent to 10 and a half per
cent.
"We'll make sure this is
the most business-friendly
environment in North
America. We see every day
we're competing with the
rest of the world. We're
competing with our neigh-
bours to the south. We have
to be competitive," Ford
said.

PICKERING - Three more youths have
been arrested on human trafficking charg-
es after an investigation into the sexual as-
sault of a 16-year-old girl earlier this year.
The investigation began after the vic-
tim reported she'd been coerced into pros-
titution by a fellow student in January,
Durham police said. The girl was taken to a
hotel in Whitby, where she met an un-
known man who sexually assaulted her,
police said.
The initial investigation led to charges
including procuring a person under 18
against a Pickering girl and a boy from To-
ronto, both 16.On April 5, police an-
nounced human trafficking charges, in-
cluding procuring a person under 18 and
offering sexual services near a school,
have been laid against two 17-year-old
Pickering girls and a Toronto teen, also 17.
A third Pickering girl, 17, is charged with
obstructing justice.

PICKERING - Pickering
council learned more
about Veridian Corpora-
tion's proposal to merge
with Whitby Hydro Energy
Corporation on April 10.
Michael Angemeer, Ve-
ridian president and CEO,
explained the merger will
improve customer rates,
improve shareholder re-
turns and prepare for a
rapid industry change.
The boards of directors
of the municipal electricity
utilities have recom-
mended that shareholders
approve the proposed
merger to create a new yet-
unnamed energy corpora-
tion. Veridian and Whitby
Hydro entered into a mem-
orandum of understanding
related to the merger last
July. The current Veridian
shareholders are Ajax, Cla-
rington, Pickering and
Belleville.
Ward 3 regional Coun.
David Pickles confirmed in
the question-and answer-
portion of the presentation
that the new company will
continue to be 100 per cent
municipally owned.
The company would
serve 162,000 residential
and business customers
and be the fourth largest
municipally-owned elec-
tric utility in Ontario.
When Ward 3 city Coun.
Shaheen Butt asked about
job loss as a result of the
merger, Angemeer ex-
plained roughly 35 identi-
fied positions would most-
ly be removed through nat-
ural attrition.
Pickering chief admin-
istrative officer Tony Pre-
vedel said the city plans to
hold a public meeting re-
garding the plans on May 7,
and a report will be
brought to the next council
meeting on May 14.
More information on
the proposed merger is
available online at learn-
more.veridian.on.ca.

PICKERING - Pickering
council has approved plans
to rehabilitate Rotary
Frenchman's Bay West
Park.
These plans include the
removal of more than 160
trees, many rotting or inva-
sive, and others in the path
of construction. The trees
were already removed in
late March into early April,
to the dismay of many local
residents and a couple of
ratepayers groups.
The City of Pickering
and the Toronto and Region
Conservation Authority
made the decision to re-
move the trees along
Beachpoint Promenade to
allow road widening and
other plans for the Phase 1
reconstruction of the park
by the lake.
The plans also include
tree and shrub plantings to
replace the ones that were
removed.
When Ward 1 city Coun.
Maurice Brenner asked
about the timeline and how
quickly the trees will grow,
director of engineering ser-
vices Richard Holborn said,
"You won't see another for-
est there in five years," but
said the new trees will sur-
vive and they will do well in
the environment.
The trees are expected to
be planted in September or
October.
The net project costs
roughly $2.1 million.
There were some con-
cerns by residents about
the cost, compared to what
was reported in the past,
which was raised by Ward 1
regional Coun. Kevin Ashe.
Holborn explained in
the past, there was a Part 1
and a Part 2 to the tender,
and this year, the work was
combined instead of sepa-
rately.
"There's really no differ-
ence between last year's
tender and this year's ten-
der," he said.
The project also in-
cludes lay-by parking spac-
es, reconstruction of the ex-
isting parking area, con-
struction of the waterfront
trail and a secondary trail
system, the installation of
public art and an educa-
tional kiosk.
The concerned resi-
dents had said the plans are
quite different from the
ones they preferred in the
past.
Holborn said there were
some changes between the
original plan in 2012 and
2016, but they were done
through a public process
that included focus group
meetings and an open
house.
"It was very meaning-
ful," he said. "There wereful," he said. "There weref
over 100 people that showed
up at the open house."
In a recorded vote, coun-
cil unanimously approved
the plans.
More plans for the park
will be rolled out in the fu-
ture.

DURHAM - A man slapped
with hundreds of charges after
firefighters responding to an
alarm at a house in Pickering dis-
covered what turned out to be a
dangerous synthetic opioid re-
mains in custody following a
court appearance Thursday.
Maisum Ansari was remand-
ed after an appearance via video
in Oshawa April 19. He and a co-
accused are scheduled to attend a
judicial pretrial hearing involv-
ing a judge and lawyers in mid-
May.
Ansari, 33, of New Providence
Street in Oshawa faces numerous
charges including careless stor-
age of a firearm, possession of a
restricted weapon and posses-
sion of a prohibited device follow-
ing the discovery of numerous
guns at a house he owns in Pick-
ering last September.
An activated carbon monoxide
alarm led to the discovery of the
guns and prohibited devices in-
cluding overcapacity magazines,
as well as an unknown substance,
in the Liatris Drive house. The
substance was later confirmed to
be carfentanil, a powerful and
dangerous synthetic opioid.
The seizure amounted to
420,000 doses of carfentanil with a
street value estimated at $13 mil-
lion, Durham police said.
In March of 2018 police
charged a second man in connec-
tion with the case. Babar Ali, 30,
of Toronto is also facing drug and
weapons charges.
