The Department of National Defence has con- firmed that Trenell Ottley, who is currently in cus- tody on charges including kidnapping and robbery, went AWL in early September. “He has been absent without authority since Sept. 7 of this year,” DND said in response to an inquiry. Ottley, 24, of Ajax, is a corporal with the 1st Prin- cess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, stationed in Edmonton, DND confirmed. When Ottley failed to report for duty the military engaged its protocol, which included trying to locate him and contacting next of kin, DND said. The mili- tary is aware of Ottley’s current status. Trenell Ottley and his brother, 21-year-old Trevell Ottley, face more that 60 charges relating to a series of robberies and carjackings, the majority of which occurred between Oct. 12, when a man and woman were abducted and forced to drive to an ATM and withdraw cash, until the arrest of two suspects in late November. The military is not seeking Ottley’s immediate return, DND said. “Any further action regarding the member’s duty status will be put on hold pending the outcome of the current judicial proceedings,” DND stated. Ajax brothers accused in string of violent carjackings denied bail DURHAM — Two Ajax brothers accused of a crime spree that included violent robberies and carjackings will remain behind bars after being denied bail Tuesday. Trenell Ottley, 24, and 21-year-old Trevell Ottley, were remanded in custo- dy following a daylong joint bail hear- ing in Oshawa Dec. 19. They’re sched- uled to appear in court by video in early January. The brothers, who face dozens of charges relating to nine separate offences in Ajax between late Septem- ber and mid-November, were denied release following a lengthy hearing that included a nearly hour-long sum- mary of allegations against them, read into the record by prosecutor Mitchell Flagg. The Crown opposed their release on bail. Details on evidence presented dur- ing the hearing and reasons for the ruling by justice of the peace Mathil- da Hewitt are covered by a publication ban. The two men face more than 60 charges, including kidnapping and robbery, relating to a spate of incidents that include: • Seven incidents involving carjack- ing, attempted carjacking and robbery of people in or near their vehicles in north Ajax, spanning from Oct. 12 to Nov. 16. • The robbery of a taxi driver near Ajax Downs Casino on Nov. 28. • Theft of a cellphone and cash on Sept. 13 near the Ajax GO station, involving a cellphone advertised on the letgo app (only Trenell charged). A search warrant was executed in Ajax on Nov. 28 and an imitation hand- gun was seized. At a news conference held at the Ajax town hall on Friday, Dec. 1, Durham police Det.-Sgt. Ryan Connolly said the two suspects were “not known to police prior to this inves- tigation.” The pair were under surveil- lance by the police when they were arrested following a robbery of a taxi operator on Nov. 28, Connolly added. The Department of National Defence has confirmed that Trenell Ottley, who is currently in custody on charges including kidnapping and robbery, went AWL in early September. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 3 P Please contact us with any questions or concerns about any federal programs or policies, we’d be happy to serve you! Students decorate bags with anti-drinking and driving messages for LCBO DURHAM — Durham residents shop- ping at the LCBO this holiday season will get a powerful message from local stu- dents, along with their purchase. The LCBO, Durham Regional Police and local school boards recently kicked off the second annual “Think of Me” bag cam- paign. Students decorate brown paper bags with anti-drinking and driving messages, and the bags are then used to wrap pur- chases at the LCBO. Last year more than 5,000 bags were distributed. This year, the campaign has grown. Every school in Durham was invited to participate, and more than 26,000 bags have been decorated. Police and the LCBO chose one winning bag from each DRPS division to display at the launch. The winners are: Tvisha Patel from Dr. S.J. Phillips P.S.;  Jin Jin from St. John Bosco C.S.; Evelyn Small-Woods from Pringle Creek P.S.; Tasneem Hoque from Bayview Heights P.S.; and Louise Meadway from Goodwood P.S. Durham residents are asked to take the message to social media by taking a photo of bags they receive at the LCBO and shar- ing it with the hashtag #thinkofme. The Think of Me bag program runs across the province, but this year more than half of the bags were created in Dur- ham Region. The LCBO will choose a prov- incewide winning bag design, which will be printed on 60,000 single-bottle bags and distributed to all LCBO stores across Ontario in advance of the May 2018 long weekend. Truer words could not have been written better. I worked for 60 years, paid income tax for all of those years, paid household taxes and all of those other taxes. Now as Lynne states, these immigrants and refugees come into our country and receive better benefits than us seniors. I think the seniors who have supported this country all of their lives should receive the same monetary benefits that immigrants and refugees receive. If we went to their countries, would we receive the same benefits as they are receiving? I don’t think so. I think it is time that politicians wake up and start thinking about the way seniors are being treated. The percentage of seniors is increasing and we all do vote, so they better think about that at time for the next election. Ken Roberts Whitby Although Durham Police Service’s Fes- tive RIDE campaign has been making good on its vow to find and charge drunk drivers across the region, the apex of the annual program — that would be New Year’s Eve — is coming up quickly. So far, since the program launched on Nov. 14, the Festive RIDE team has charged 87 drivers for drinking and driving offences after five weeks. This is slightly more than in 2016, when 83 had been charged at the same point in the campaign. Another 71 motorists have registered a “warn” on a roadside screening device and had their driver’s licence suspended for three days. Last year, at the same time, 87 drivers had their licence suspended for registering a “warn.” With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, the Festive RIDE program will be out through- out Durham, in order to ensure those who drink and get behind the wheel will be caught and appropriately charged. Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a drinking and driving crimi- nal offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days. No one would suggest that ringing in 2018 with champagne and a few drinks with friends and family shouldn’t be a part of the celebration. But, before heading out for your New Year’s Eve, make sure you have a means to return home from your party safely. Many options exist. Cab companies generally mobilize their full fleets in order to get customers to and from their New Year’s Eve parties. There are also services available to get you and your vehicle home safely after a night of drinking. In most of Durham, public transit is available, with Durham Region Transit buses operating on extended service on Dec. 31 into Jan. 1. The “don’t drink and drive” message was also given a boost through a joint pro- gram among the LCBO, Durham police and the local school boards. For the sec- ond year, the Think of Me bag campaign was launched, with students decorating more than 26,000 brown paper bags with anti-drinking and driving messages. The bags are used to wrap purchases at the LCBO during the holiday season. Durham residents can take the message to social media by taking photos of the bags they receive at the LCBO and sharing them with #thinkofme. Enjoy ushering in 2018, but leave the driving to someone sober. Please, don’t drink and drive. OUR VIEW Ring in 2018 in Durham, but leave the driving to someone who is sober cOLUmn It’s funny how my Christmases have changed over the years. As though the holiday season, like a fine spirit, has been distilling itself into a more pure and valuable commodity with every pass- ing year. When I was a child, of course, I was consumed with filling the days leading up to Christmas and New Years with every possible bit of excitement, fun and treasure. One of my favourite things back then was to sit on the couch in our living room, lit by the lights of our Christmas tree and leaf endlessly through the old Eaton’s Wish Book. I could and did do that for hours. Every Christmas special that came on TV, every Christmas movie (mind you there were only about three of them back then) and every Christmas song on the radio was like tossing Yuletide gasoline on my holiday fire. Like all kids, I burned white hot with the excitement of the season. Years later, as the parent of young children, that fire burned a little slower for me, but was still kindled brightly by the delight my own kids took in the holidays and the vicarious joy I was bathed in just by being around them. These days, when it’s just Kathryn and I and the dogs and the cat, things have mel- lowed even further. The dross of Christmas and the holidays, as it were, has slowly, over the years, quite naturally, burned away, leav- ing only the shining ore … the purest, ele- mental thing behind it all. For me, that thing is ‘connection.’ The one present I want from anyone over the holidays and the finest gift I can possi- bly offer anybody is connection. Being with Kathryn, enjoying our children under our roof once again … precious breakfasts and dinners with them, spending time with my beloved parents and sharing my home and my table with friends. It doesn’t get any nicer than that. Christmas should change for us as we move through life. Part of it’s wonder is that the seasons offerings, if we are open to them, are manifold enough to delight us and sur- prise us, year by year, decade by decade, age by age. Although my eyesight may not be quite as sharp as it once was, my ‘insight,’ thank- fully, gets blessedly keener with every passing year. I seem to see, more clearly, what really matters, what is really precious, what is really worth paying attention to. And, as mesmeriz- ing as that Wish Book was all those years ago, nowhere in those pages could I possibly have found or even dreamt of finding the gifts that I now find so precious. And that’s as it should be. SHOP THEBAY.COM Ajax man faces numerous charges after young girls forced into sex trade DURHAM — Four people, including two teenaged girls, are facing human trafficking charges based on allegations they forced two young girls into the sex trade and profited from the enterprise. An investigation began last month after two 14-year-old girls reported they’d been forced to work as prostitutes, Durham police said. The girls said they’d been forced to work in multiple hotels in the Greater Toronto Area, police said. Cops arrested four suspects in Scarborough on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Facing multiple charges including trafficking in per- sons under 18, procuring a per- son under 18 and deriving mate- rial benefit from sexual ser- vices is Tyvon Callahan, 22, of Church Street in Ajax. Charged with offences including exercis- ing control over a young person and permitting prohibited sex- ual activity by a minor is Shaqu- wone Rose, 22, of Dean Avenue in Oshawa. A 16-year-old girl of no fixed address was charged with traf- ficking in persons under 18, pro- curing, exercising control and other related offences. The fourth suspect, a 17-year- old Oshawa female, is charged with offences including possess- ing another person’s identity documents, possessing a forged document and breach of an undertaking. All four suspects were held for bail hearings. A visit to one of Durham’s 15 coastal wetlands drew atten- tion to what a wonderful place it is, even on a cold wintry day, and how we have to take care of it. Take care of all our precious watersheds and wetlands. Whitby’s visionary mayor, Don Mitchell, called an on-site meeting to tour Corbett Marsh, a provincially significant wetland tucked between the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve and Intrepid Park. Then he gamely hiked the Waterfront Trail in the falling snow with conservation author- ity staff and volunteers from the local land trust, to check on conditions. Not visible, given the season, were the turtles, muskrats and mink that call the marsh home. Nor the shorebirds, ducks, swans, rails and terns that arrive on scene come spring. But lots of deer, fox, rabbit, mice and vole tracks crossed the freshly fallen snow, attesting to the area’s value for wildlife. Phragmites, declared Ontario’s “worst alien invasive,” was one reason for concern, those tall plumed, perennial grasses chok- ing every ditch and streamside throughout the region. They grow so thick that turtles and frogs — even deer — can’t get through them, or find food there. Plus they put tox- ins in the soil that kill native plants. Arriv- ing along the St. Lawrence River in the early 1900s, phragmites is in process of swallow- ing the whole Great Lakes basin, currently moving on up through cottage country to Georgian Bay. Alarmed town councils in southwestern Ontario have been working frantically to make their wetlands phrag- mites free, a heads-up to Durham’s munic- ipalities to act before it’s too late.  A second major concern at Corbett Marsh is water quality. Researchers with the Matt Holder Fund, studying biodiver- sity there, photographed oil slicks flood- ing in from industrial areas upstream, a death sentence for aquatic life. They also found that insects present in a healthy wet- land are missing from Corbett. Homeown- ers living north of Hwy. 2 report healthy toad populations calling every spring in the headwaters. But south of Hwy. 401 and the CN tracks the waters are eerily silent, except for the rumble of trucks and facto- ries.  Frenchman’s Bay, Cranberry Marsh, Second Marsh, Wilmot Conservation Area — several of Durham’s larger coastal wet- lands have groups already working to pro- tect them. But smaller ones like Corbett deserve just as much tender loving care — and desperately need help if they’re to regain their health and important biologi- cal functions. Mayor Mitchell’s tour was a great first step in the fight against phragmites, and a call to action to clean up our act. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks.net or 905-725-2116. Managing holiday stress For many people, the holiday season is a happy and joyful time. However, if you are tired and not feeling well, the holiday sea- son can be stressful and overwhelming. It may mean that you don’t feel like joining in with all the holiday activities. At Lakeridge Health, social workers work in all areas of the hospital. I work in the Dur- ham Regional Cancer Centre, and together with my colleagues, we’re helping cancer patients plan for the holidays so that they can manage their stress and find enjoyment during the holiday season. Here are my top five tips that may help you manage stress during the holidays. Ask for help Setting realistic goals about what you can and can’t do may help keep your stress levels down. If you are unable to cook, offer to bring drinks, napkins or a centrepiece to a holiday party instead. Are you hosting a holiday dinner? Suggest a potluck. That way you don’t have to cook the entire meal your- self. Helpful reminders Making a list can help you manage your time. When you make a list include the things you have to do, the things you want to do, and the things you feel like you should do. This can help you decide what is impor- tant. I also suggest people write themselves reminder notes. For example, if you have to pick up the turkey in the morning, put a note where you are sure to see it the night before. Talk about your feelings If you’re feeling stressed, talk to a friend, social worker or counsellor about what you are worried about. Talking about your worries or concerns can help you look at a problem in a new way. It also lets your feel- ings out. If you are not comfortable talking with someone, writing down your thoughts and feelings may help too. Enjoy the moment It can help not to worry about the future. Take in and enjoy the celebrations with family and friends. Think about what you are grateful for and talk about it with others. Plan time for yourself To help you from feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to make time for yourself. Don’t feel you have to say “yes” and take on additional tasks that you may not feel up to doing. Find a balance that works for you. Tell people if you don’t have the energy for some celebrations. Do something enjoyable for yourself. Watch a holiday movie or stop and grab yourself a specialty holiday latte. — Rachel Nesbitt is a social worker at the Durham Regional Cancer Centre OpiniOn Guest column Rachel nesbitt du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 10 AP New X-Lab is focussed on making use of the world’s technology Keith Gilligan KGilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Virtual reality, Google glass, 3D printers, drones. Those are technologies not often asso- ciated with the nuclear industry. But, at the Pickering nuclear station, the X-Lab has been incorporating these technolo- gies to promote innovation, save money and possibly make money for Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Jason Wight, the director station engi- neering at the Pickering nuclear station, began the lab earlier this year, noting companies such as Google and Amazon have innovative centres. “They’re doing crazy innovations. We took that concept and use it in the nuclear space and think differently of the work we do,” Wight said. The lab has six or seven permanent staff and another 35 to 40 working part- time across the company. The lab is “across all sites and across all platforms,” he said. During a recent joint meeting of the Darlington and Pickering community advisory councils, Wight said, “We real- ly need to take advantage of the world’s technology.” He noted Google glass can be used for safety, such as ensuring workers stay with- in dose rates. “It’s to ensure they stay out of high (dose) areas,” he said. A Blue Tooth was attached to the Google glasses and “you can always know doses and where you are.” The glasses have “advanced technology and are very easy to use,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunity in the 3D printing realm,” Wight added. The lab printed out a piece that short- ened an outage by four days, saving the company $2 million. “It’s an opportu- nity to replace parts a lot faster and a lot cheaper.” The lab already has three patents. “We developed a product with its own integrat- ed chip. “A lot of this is understanding what’s around us,” Wight said. The lab created a virtual reality (VR) radiation test, which the U.S. nuclear industry is interested in “because they aren’t allowed to do this.” The test can be used by a worker to sim- ulate modifying a pump. “We can virtually design it in minutes,” Wight said. Using VR before undertaking a task will reduce errors during construction, he added. There’s a VR for an air lock. “It’s great familiarization on how to use an air lock. They can learn before getting in there.” He noted drones have been used for three or four years. In the past, when an inspection of the vacuum building was undertaken, plat- form scaffolding had to be erected around the building. Using a drone saves that cost and “it gave us the opportunity to get real close. Rather than 3D printing, we can scan it,” Wight stated. “There were whole areas we couldn’t do things. Now we can. The technology is really enabling us to get there,” Wight said. “If you can Google it, we are going to try it. The nuclear industry in general isn’t like this. It’s hard for a nuclear station to be innovative.” Being first in the industry means “something could go wrong.” It’s also a business opportunity to help OPG grow, he said. “We can make money and put it back into the system and to taxpayers,” he noted. The lab has space at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology innova- tion centre. “They want us up there.” A new innovation portal on the OPG website is to be launched imminently. “We’ve got an incredibly talented work- force,” he said. “We need to leverage the community.” As for artificial intelligence, “we are just getting started. Data security is an issue.” “The hardest job I have right now is convincing someone to try it. We’re fully supportive from the CEO down.” Lab member Laura Brooks said, “We can be buyers of off-the-shelf products or we can look to make our own.” Wight added, “We’re pushing this hard. I love a company that innovates. If you’re not innovating, you’re dying.” Thinking outside the box at OPGInnovation Jason Liebregts / Metroland PICKERING — Mike Cleave takes a 3D scan of a geiger counter in the new X-Lab Innovation Centre at Ontario Power Generation. It’s aim is to think outside the box to come up with solutions and innovations that can benefit the company. There were whole areas we couldn’t do things. Now we can. The technology is really enabling us to get there. -- Jason Wright Director station engineering at Pickering nuclear station “ du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 11 AP Bessada kia Where Family Makes The Differencewww.bessadakia.com • 1-866-421-9191 • 1675 Bayly St., Pickering • Bayly & Brock Rd. | Monday to Thursday 9-8, Friday 9-6, Saturday 9-5 Premium DealerBessada kia of ajax and Pickering Where Family Makes the Difference kia.ca/OurCanada 5 YEARS / 100,000 KM WARRANTY/ UNLIMITED KM ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE° • COMPREHENSIVE• POWERTRAIN• 100% TRANSFERABLE • ROADSIDE ASSISTANCEANYWHERE IN NORTH AMERICA 2017SORENTO“Highest Ranked Midsize SUV in InitialQuality, 2 out of 3 Years in the U.S.” THE 2018s ARE HERE FOR THE HOLIDAYS DON’T PAY UNTIL SPRING * ON FINANCING OFFERS LX FWD $1,995 DOWN & INCLUDES$750 HOLIDAY BONUS Φ BASE ENGINE:2.4L GDI 4-CYLINDERAILABLE ENGINES:2.0L TURBO GDI, 3.3L V6 FINANCEFROM $75 WEEKLY0%84MONTHSΦ Offer(s) available on select new 2018 models through participating dealers to qualified retail customers, on approved credit, who take deliveryfrom Dec 1, 2017 to Jan 2, 2018. A report that went to the board’s Nov. 27 meeting outlines the work completed this year. The list includes: opening a six-class- room addition at St. James Catholic School in Ajax; selling the sites of the former St. Gertrude Catholic School in Oshawa and Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Scugog, opening a new adult and con- tinuing education site in Oshawa; and pur- chasing a site for a new elementary school in Ajax. DCDSB Superintendent Bob Camozzi says another highlight is the new child care centre that opened this year at St. Jose- phine Bakhita Catholic School in Ajax. He says it’s an example of ongoing efforts to create more “hub” spaces, such as child care centres or Ontario Early Years Centres, within school buildings. “We have 10-month-olds to Grade 8s in our elementary schools,” Camozzi explains. “The beauty of this, is there is some cross-pollination between the child cares and the schools.” Camozzi says child care centres are a “major component” of the board’s school renovation plans, noting that they create important community connections and make future transitions to kindergarten easier. The DCDSB has requested funding from the province  to build or expand child care centres at five locations — Good Shepherd Catholic School in Scugog, Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School in Oshawa, St. Teresa of Calcutta Catho- lic School in Ajax and St. Theresa Catholic School in Whitby, as well as at the board’s new continuing education site in Oshawa. The board also made a pitch to the province to fund two brand-new schools — a high school in Brooklin and an ele- mentary school in the Seaton community in Pickering — and replacements for two aging schools, St. Marguerite D’Youville Catholic School in Whitby and Monsi- gnor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School in Oshawa. Camozzi says the province is expected to announce which projects will get funding approval sometime this winter. “We hope to get all four,” he says, refer- ring to the school capital requests. Other big projects on the horizon include the opening of the DCDSB’s new Arts and Media Program at All Saints Cath- olic Secondary School in Whitby in Sep- tember 2018 and the start of construction in the spring of 2018 on a new unnamed Catholic elementary school in north Oshawa. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 14 AP We arelooking for 20 people to evaluatethenewestwirelesshearingaidtechnology CALL 289-608-8440 tobookanappointment orcomeintoday and tell us what you think! Next phase of Hwy. 407 from Oshawa to Clarington will open in early January, 2018 CLARINGTON — A new sec- tion of Highway 407 will open early in the new year, taking drivers from Harmony Road in Oshawa, past Enfield Road and south to Taunton Road in Clar- ington. “It’s a pretty good Christmas present for the community,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. The new addition of 9.6 kilo- metres to Highway 407, includ- ing two new interchanges, will open in early January. A full high- way interchange will be open at Enfield Road. Just past Solina, the highway will turn south to Taunton Road, where it will end. Ministry officials explained that in the interim, the north- south section from Highway 407 to Taunton will also be called Highway 407. Once the full north- south toll road from Highway 401 to Highway 407 is complete in two years, the name will revert to Highway 418. Tolling on the new section will begin immediately upon open- ing. Toll rates for the publicly- owned sections of highways 407 and 412 are generally lower than tolls on the privately-owned Highway 407 ETR. The province’s rates are, on average, approxi- mately 15 per cent lower during off-peak periods and approxi- mately 30 per cent lower during peak periods, as compared to Highway 407 ETR. Commuters and businesses who plan to use the Highway 407 regularly can get a transponder and receive one bill for their travel. Mayor Foster said not every- one would be interested in using the toll road, but for some com- muters and commercial trans- portation, it could greatly help traffic flow through the area. “Traffic on the (Highway) 401 has just been getting worse and worse. This was needed. This was needed years ago,” said Mayor Foster. The first phase of the High- way 407 eastern extension, which opened last year and included a new a Highway 412 north-south connection to Highway 401, is already being used by approxi- mately 40,000 vehicles per day.   The Ontario government has budgeted $1.2 billion on the east- ern extension of Highway 407 — which includes the design, con- struction and 30 years of main- tenance. At the peak of construc- tion, the highway expansion proj- ect employed 700 skilled trades people. The final phase, sched- uled to open by 2020, will connect Highway 407 to Highway 35/115 and includes Highway 418, which will provide another north-south connection between Highway 407 to Highway 401. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • De c e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 7 22 AP WINTER TIRE SPECIALS195/65-15''From $76.00 each •205/55-16''From $83.00 each215/55-17''From $107.00 each •275/65-18''From $188.00 each Supplies limited and taxes and installation extra COURTESY CARS AVAILABLE 963 brock rd s., pickering liv e r p o o l 401 bayly ch u r c h br o c K r D . Over the last 40 years, I have personally worked with numerous elite and pro ath- letes on an individual basis. Approximate- ly 85 per cent of them have presented with low self-esteem, especially in areas out- side of sports. My observations and experiences are that athletes often rely too much on their sport for their identity, confidence and fulfilment. Frequently, they tend to per- ceive a lack of ability in academics, rela- tionships, communication and many other areas of life. Perhaps that is why they put so much effort and importance in sports, because that is one area that raises their self-esteem. Additionally, some athletes tend to come equipped with fragile egos. They are generally very sensitive to criticism and don’t like being told what to do. Playing poorly makes them question their worth and acceptance. Many great athletes are also lack- ing effective coping strategies when their performance plummets. Some engage in questionable activities such as heavy alco- hol and hard drugs, smoking, fighting, binge eating and a host of other addic- tions. These unhealthy habits are used to block out the emotional pain of perceived failure and shame, but actually make mat- ters much worse for the athlete. In my opinion, most athletes are look- ing to make their mark in life by excelling in sports. When players stop performing at a high level for a few weeks or more and stop believing in themselves, they may not only end up in a slump but may suffer from a depression that they cannot recov- er from by themselves. Athletic competition can be a cruel test of life if we do not have the mental tools to handle it. In sports, as in life, there are many more failures than successes. Therefore, we must experience failure in order to succeed. Failure is not a flaw or something we should be ashamed of. It is the price we must pay to learn, grow and develop as champions. Strong self-esteem matters. It inocu- lates athletes from fear of failure and the shame and frustration of failing. True potential is a natural outgrowth of fearless performance and healthy self-worth. Dr. Douglas Smith is a licensed psychologist in Ontario specializing in sport psychology since 1985. Former Major League Baseball player Nigel Wilson hooks up with Olympian Tony Sharpe Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com AJAX — Although his specialty remains working with sprinters, Tony Sharpe is helping athletes of all stripes realize the benefits of speed. Taking advantage of a slightly slow- er time of the year in the winter months, Sharpe has opened the doors of his Speed Academy athletics club in Pickering to the likes of hockey and tennis players, gym- nasts and, most recently, baseball players with the Ajax-based Ontario Yankees pro- gram. It’s a pairing that has worked well in part because of the like-mindedness between Sharpe and Yankees coach Nigel Wilson, both having reached the pinnacle of their respective sports. Sharpe, an Olympic bronze medallist, and Wilson, a former Major League Base- ball player, had discussed the possibility of working together for some time, and finally made it happen this fall with hour- ly Sunday sessions for each of the under- 17 and under-18 Yankees teams at the Pickering Soccer Centre. “It’s turned out to be more than I expected, that’s for sure,” said Wilson. “It’s good as far as the kids are all improving, and that’s what you want. It’s good keep- ing the team together, we’re doing all the same things as a team, and for individual development, it’s great because there are some guys who were pretty fast as it was, but now they’re even quicker, and that will help certain kids get to that next level.” Sharpe, who opened the Speed Acad- emy in 2006, has helped launch many track-and-field athletes on to scholarships in the United States, including Andre De Grasse, now one of the top sprinters in the world. But, he has also worked with athletes in many other sports, including base- ball player Michael Foster, who earned a scholarship to Northeastern Universi- ty and was a 16th round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2015. “At the end of the day, games are won and lost by inches, so proper running mechanics and speed development is critical to that game,” Sharpe said. “It’s overlooked but when you watch a base- ball game, you start to think if I’d gotten there in a half of a tenth of a second fast- er, I would be safe. That’s when it starts to ring true, how important it is, but yet often it’s probably never trained in a baseball- specific practice.” Sharpe has also recently worked with Whitby’s Ana Padurariu, an elite athlete at Oshawa’s Gemini Gymnastics who has aspirations of reaching the 2020 Olym- pics. The speed element is particularly useful to her with the vault and floor ele- ments of artistic gymnastics. “The kids like Ana gobble it up quick- ly because they’re so in tune with their overall body language — they really know themselves well,” Sharpe explained. “It’s been interesting just meeting these differ- ent athletes, and also it’s been a blast.” Sharpe will continue to work with the Yankees until March, when the track sea- son starts to heat up. The timing works well for Wilson, who will bring his players south to Florida for a mini training camp in March, an annual trip he’s made for the past six or so years. Wilson, who was born in Oshawa, lives in Ajax and has run the Competitive Edge training facility in Ajax for the past 10 years, said he looks forward to getting back on to the diamond to see the bene- fits of working with Sharpe. “Everybody’s not fast, but the ones that can run always seem to have that edge,” he said. “When they get on base, they’re always a threat to run. If you’re fast, you put a lot of pressure on the defence, and when you start to put added pressure on the defence, that’s when mistakes can happen and you can win a lot of ball games that way. Any edge that we can get, we’re going to try to take advantage of it, for sure.” Sabrina Byrnes / Metroland PICKERING -- Tony Sharpe’s Speed Academy track club is helping Nigel Wilson’s Ontario Yankees baseball players pre- pare for next season. ProudlyMadeinCanada SportS Forward will play for Canada again at 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea PICKERING — Pickering’s Jennifer Wakefield will get a chance to win Olym- pic gold for a second time and help Can- ada defend its incredible string of four straight titles at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Feb. 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Wakefield, a 28-year-old forward, was among the 23 players selected to play for Team Canada during a Hockey Canada announcement in Calgary Friday Dec. 22. She is one of 14 players who won the gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. “It was an extremely difficult decision narrowing down our roster due to the depth of talent on our team,” said head coach Laura Schuler in a press release. “These players have worked hard to earn this moment and we are confident that they will be able to inspire and unite our country as they set their sights on a fifth straight gold medal for Canada.” Pyeongchang 2018 will mark the sixth time women’s hockey has been part of the Olympic Winter Games. In addition to its four gold medals, Canada also claimed silver in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. The Olympic women’s hockey tourna- ment opens on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Kwandong Hockey Centre and culminates on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Gangneung Hockey Centre. Canada is scheduled to compete in Group A and begins prelimi- nary-round play on Sunday, Feb. 11. Wakefield has been a member of the national team program since 2007 and has played at the last six world champion- ship tournaments, winning one gold and five silver medals, along with her Olympic gold medal. SportS Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com WHITBY — Cal Foote and Jonah Gadjo- vich have many common friends through sports, but had never donned the same jer- sey together until this month, when they were both selected to play for Canada at the 2018 world junior hockey championships. Their paths have crossed a few times, but since Gadjovich didn’t play lacrosse while growing up in Whitby and Foote was long gone by the time hockey season rolled around, they travelled entirely different paths to realize the same dream. Foote’s journey was directed by the career of his father, Adam, a Whitby native who played 1,154 games in the National Hockey League (NHL), won two Stanley Cups with the Colorado Avalanche and has represented Canada several times himself, most notably winning a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics. For Cal, and his younger brother Nolan, that meant being born and raised in the United States and playing all of their hockey there until they joined the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. But, having spent many summers playing lacrosse in Whitby and hearing stories of his dad’s glory days playing for his country, Cal Foote says he’s a Canadian at heart. “I was born a Canadian and felt like it was in my blood, and I’ve always been cheer- ing for Team Canada,” Foote said in a tele- phone interview. “It’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a little kid growing up cheering for Team Canada. I just felt like I always wanted to be part of a team, especially a world junior team, when I was older.” A dual citizen, Foote only became eligible to play for Canada this year owing to a resi- dency rule, but said he was never invited to any national camps or programs in the U.S., making his decision on which country to represent even easier. A six-foot-four, 212-pound defenceman and captain of the Rockets, Foote was a first- round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning, 14th overall, in the 2017 NHL draft. Coached by his dad in hockey for four years and several more in lacrosse, he appre- ciates both the nature and nurture elements of what’s been passed down. “Probably all the basics and all the funda- mentals came from him,” he said, of what he learned from his dad, also a defenceman. “I guess there are some similarities with how we play defence and some differences in how I want to add to the offence a little bit more than he did,” he added. “I love getting compared to him. I think it’s an honour to be compared to a longtime NHLer who com- peted and worked his hardest every time he was on the ice.” Gadjovich’s route to Team Canada was more traditional — he played all of his minor hockey in Whitby, albeit didn’t reach the Canada comes calling for local pair AAA level until bantam — but certainly not without its challenges. A late-bloomer, Gadjovich had a break- through 46-goal season with the Owen Sound Attack last year that saw his stock rise to the point where he was drafted in the second round by the Vancouver Canucks and became part of the conversation for the national team. But the six-foot-two-inch, 210-pound left winger missed nearly a month this season with a wrist injury, casting some doubt on his inclusion. “I knew that when I came back I’d be 100 per cent and I’d get back into the swing of things so that I could get back on track and have my shot to play for Canada,” said Gad- jovich, who scored twice in his first game back in Nov. 11 and now has 15 goals in 21 games with the Attack. “Obviously it was a goal of mine to make the team, and when I found out it was official, I was speechless at the time. I was just so excited to be part of this group.” Both 19, this is the final crack for Foote and Gadjovich to play at the world juniors — and they plan on making the most of the opportunity. “I think we’re a team that plays the right way and we have a lot of strong guys that work hard, so for us it’s going to be grind- ing teams down and wearing them down, imposing our will on them and scoring goals and blocking pucks,” said Gadjovich. “Our goal is to win a gold medal and that’s the only thing that matters right now, but in order to do that we’ve got to take it day by day and keep learning and growing as the tournament goes on, and getting better each day.” “We have one plan, and that’s to win gold,” Foote said, more bluntly. “Anything short is failure.” Canada opened the tournament with a 4-2 win over Finland on Boxing Day. The tournament concludes with the gold-medal game Friday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. at the Key Bank Center in Buffalo. photos by Matthew Murnaghan / Hockey Canada LONDON -- Cal Foote, above, and Jonah Gadjovich, left, both scored a goal in a 9-0 pre-tourna- ment romp for Canada over the Czech Republic in advance of the world junior hockey champion- ships. BATESON, Barbara May 8, 1928 - December 17, 2017"Grab your coat and get your hat, leave your worry at the doorstep. Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street."Suddenly on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in Port Perry, at age 89. Our beloved Mum, Nana, Little Nan, Barbara Bateson will be forever remembered in our hearts. Dear wife of the late Joseph Ronald Bateson of Ajax. Cherished mother of David (Trish) and Gary. Loving grandmother of Kristy (Ryan), Erin (Andrew), Lindsay (Nathan) and Andrew. Proud great-grandmother of Brynn, Vivian, Bennett, Warren, Owen, Evelynn, Connor, and newly arrived Alexander. Dear Aunty of nieces and nephews in Manchester, England and Ontario. She will be forever remembered for her love of music and dancing, sense of humour, and the important role she played in caring for her grandchildren. While she immigrated to Canada in 1953, her soul remained in England where she lived until young adulthood. Her recollections of living through WW2 taught us all the value of loved ones sticking together through tough times. A celebration of life will be held for her friends and family in May, on what would have been Barbara's 90th birthday. Arrangements entrusted to the Low and Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach Street, Port Perry (905-985-7331). He’s taking 2018 off and says his New Year’s Eve show in Durham will be “our last gig for at least a year” and possibly for good. The veteran rocker, 68, known for instantly recognizable songs such as Bad Apple, That Hypnotizin’ Boogie and Do the Bearcat, says he’s leaving the length of his time off “open-ended." “I go and recharge my batteries,” he says in an interview. “I play (listen to) all kinds of music, jazz, classical, that feeds the soul.” Wilcox says he doesn’t listen to rock music and guitarists because if he does, he tends to start playing like them. Wilcox and his band perform at the Oshawa Music Hall, 39 King St. E., on Dec. 31. The special guest is Oshawa’s the House Call. The Toronto resident notes he’s taken a year off before (2011) and that it doesn’t mean he’ll be on vacation for 12 months. Wilcox is working on a record, a solo acoustic, roots album featuring all new material. He says a lot of the songs “are sort of, what you could say, tributes,” then says he doesn’t like that word and prefers songs that “emulate” some of his musical heroes, including delta blues legend Rob- ert Johnson. Back to Oshawa and New Year’s Eve, and Wilcox agrees “a late night for sure” is in store. “Also some surprises,” he says of what revelers can expect. “A couple of new things we’ve been working on. A fantas- tic rhythm section. And a rocking good time.” The last one is a given. Wilcox has been Mr. Good Times for around 40 years. Known for playing a lot of shows, he’s also known for partying and having as good a time as his audience was having — at least in former times. And it was no act. Now, Wilcox says it’s “just a different party” for him, adding, “I’m glad what I did then and I’m glad what I’m doing now.” He’s no stranger to Oshawa, noting plac- es he’s played over the years such as the Genosha Hotel and the Jube (Jubilee Pavilion).   In 1970, Wilcox replaced Amos Gar- rett in Great Speckled Bird, Ian and Syl- via Tyson’s band, backing artists includ- ing Anne Murray and Carl Perkins. He went solo after a few years and in his first band, David Wilcox and the Teddy Bears, he would appear on stage larger than life, with a big waxed moustache. Wilcox says it was hard to establish himself as disco was on the upswing and would quickly become king. “We didn’t have records out and I want- ed people to remember the band,” he says of his stage appearance and antics. Amazingly, his first solo record, Out of the Woods, which spawned his most suc- cessful songs, took two years to sell. “If you don’t sound like anyone else, it’s a curse,” Wilcox says. The record reached gold status and the 80s was a successful decade for the Mon- treal native. He suggests Oshawa, which appreciates rock 'n’ roll, is the place to play his last gig for a year — and maybe his last ever. “It’s our kind of audience,” Wilcox says. The doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $55 and available at www. ticketweb.ca, Wilson and Lee Music Store and Long and McQuade in Oshawa (cash only). DURHAM — Bach, Paganini ... and Hen- drix? Clarington violinist Dave Shewchuk pres- ents a “half and half concert” on Jan. 5 in Oshawa. The first half of the show is solo vio- lin, with Shewchuk performing music by greats such as Bach and Paganini in addi- tion to some of his own compositions. And then Shewchuk will switch to his elec- tric violin to play music by guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Joe Satriani. He will be accompanied by Chris Wunderlich on bass, Zane Davis on drums and Kevin Lip- pert on guitar. “I’m very excited to be performing on my electric violin the music of some of my non-classical heroes,” he says. “In combi- nation with Paganini, Bach and some of my own pieces, it will be a really unique concert. Looking forward to making my first solo concert in Oshawa a big success.” The concert is at 8 p.m. at Kingsview Unit- ed Church, 505 Adelaide Ave. E., Oshawa.
