Money raised will go toward Make-A-Wish Canada in memory of her daughter Olivia White, who died from a rare undiagnosed blood disorder on Dec. 26, 2012. Olivia loved princesses and Disney and the money raised will send seriously ill children to her favourite place, Disney World. Annual Princess Ball to honour Pickering girl Tickets go on sale Dec. 5, raises funds to send seriously ill kids to Disney World Kristen Calis KCalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Olivia White was a little girl filled with so much compassion, she once chose to hug the classmate who was mean to her in kindergarten. This was after her mother had explained that when kids are mean, they don’t have enough love in their hearts. This kind gesture was one of many dis- played by Olivia, a Pickering girl whose life was cut tragically short from an undi- agnosed blood disorder on Dec. 26, 2012, when she was just five years old. “When Olivia passed away, obviously that is the worst thing that can happen to any family,” says her mother, Jennifer White. “From that, you’re not just los- ing her at the time, you’re losing every- thing she could have possibly been and everything she could have done for the world.” See PICKERING page 4 Torstar, Postmedia announce community and daily newspaper deal Canada’s two largest print and digital media firms announced Monday they have signed a deal to buy and sell 41 newspapers, mainly in Ontario. Torstar Corporation announced early Monday that it has purchased eight weekly community publica- tions, seven daily community newspapers and two free daily newspapers from Postmedia. Postmedia Network Can- ada Corp. announced a deal with Metroland Media Group and Free Daily News Group Inc., both subsidiaries of Tor- star Corp., to buy 22 of Torstar’s community newspapers and two free commuter daily news- papers. The two companies will close most of the affected papers in order to focus more efficiently on key areas. Jennifer and her husband Glenn also had a baby named Aurelia, and they had to do their best to make things normal for her. “At the end of the day, there’s nowhere really to go except forward,” Jennifer says. Olivia’s positive attitude ended up encouraging an effort that is changing the lives of little girls and boys across the country for the better. Jennifer wanted to do something that would honour Olivia, who was kind, giv- ing and caring, and wore princess dress- es and skipped everywhere she went. And she wanted to touch the lives of children. “Olivia was a very lucky girl,” says Jennifer. “She managed to go to Disney (World) many times when she was quite young. It was her absolute favourite place in the world. Sending children and their families to experience that magic was very important to us.” The family created Wishes for Olivia, a not-for-profit group dedicated to rais- ing money for the Make-A-Wish Foun- dation of Canada, which grants wishes to children with serious medical condi- tions. “This is our way of being able to move forward while holding her in our hearts,” Jennifer says. The effort began with smaller fun- draisers before it expanded to a large annual event that fits perfectly with what Wishes for Olivia is all about. With the help of many volunteers, it’s turned into a much sought-after event that wel- comes 500 guests dressed in their royal best. Wishes for Olivia’s annual Princess Ball will take place on Sunday, April 15 at the Liberty Grand Governor’s Ball- room in Toronto, 25 British Columbia Rd. (Exhibition Place) in Toronto. The theme this year is Show Your Strength, and celebrates the princesses that display powers of resilience, intel- ligence, leadership, kindness, indepen- dence and strength. “I think sometimes we get caught up that a princess is all about a love story, but these women are embodying every- thing we want our children to be,” Jen- nifer says. “We want them to be good, empathetic, happy.” Olivia was much like this. “She was a girlie girl, all right,” says her mother. “She embodied everything that a princess is. When I say that people say she wore a lot of pink and sparkles. Yes, she did. But let’s talk about what a princess is.” Boom 97.3’s morning show host Stu Jeffries will host, guiding guests through energetic entertainment and many activities. The Princess Ball is expected to be another one-of-a-kind, lavish, family- friendly event. So far, Wishes for Olivia has raised around $300,000 and has sent 30 kids to Olivia’s favourite place. “Obviously, we do this with her in mind every second,” Jennifer says. “It is for her and because of her. I think she would be very proud.” The White family has grown again, with the addition of Griffin in 2015. He’s too young to understand the true meaning behind Wishes for Olivia, but both Aurelia and Griffin will be dressed in a way that would have thrilled Olivia at the event that will continue her leg- acy. Tickets are $175 for adults (13 and older); $125 for children two to 12; and $25 for babies under two. Tickets go on sale on Dec. 5. For VIP table packages and corporate sponsorship opportunities email info@ theprincessball.com and visit theprin- cessball.com for tickets. However, this was a slight increase over the previous month. October also saw the number of new listings in Durham increase month-over- month to 1,698, up from 1,096 new listings in September, and higher than the 1,327 in October 2016. “We’re continuing to see an increase of average selling price year-over-year,” said Bouma. The average selling price in Durham reached $575,602 last month, a slight decrease from the $578,666 average selling price in September, but a 2 per cent increase over the average of $564,989 during the same period in 2016. “Durham Region continuously offers the best real estate value in the GTA,” said Bouma. “Buyers can benefit from opportunities to buy in a more relaxed market, without multiple offers, while sellers enjoy an increase in their home’s value over previous years.” Durham REALTORS®, We Work Where You Live. The crash happened at about 5:40 p.m. on Taunton Road near Church Street when a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling eastbound crossed the centre line and slammed into a westbound vehicle. A 47-year-old Ajax woman was driving the west- bound vehicle, with her 10-year-old daughter in the back seat. The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 22-year-old Ajax man, and the woman were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The girl was taken to hospital and was pronounced dead from her injuries. The road was closed for several hours while Dur- ham Regional Police Traffic Services Branch investi- gated. The investigation is ongoing and police would like to hear from any witnesses to this collision who have not already spoken with police. Anyone with more information is asked to call D/ Cst. We can’t, however, completely disagree with the board’s reasons for embarking on a three- year project to cool down the schools and classrooms. There are many reasons for going ahead with such a project, but the elephant in the room and our source of uneasiness is quite simply the price tag. The initial outlay to have air conditioning (AC) installed is coming in at $17. 5 million for seven schools and having it partially installed in 22 others. And, those costs are just the beginning where AC is con- cerned. Under the plan, Durham District School Board (DDSB) schools that will gain full air conditioning over the next three years are: Bayview Heights Public School and Maple Ridge Public School in Pickering, Eagle Ridge Public School in Ajax, John Dryden Public School in Whitby, Joseph Gould Pub- lic School in Uxbridge, S.A. Cawker Public School in Scugog and McCaskills Mills Public School in Cannington. They are in addition to the 13 DDSB schools that already have full air conditioning. Another 95 DDSB schools have partial air conditioning — typically in the library and office — and 22 schools have none. Of the 22 schools with no air-conditioned spaces inside the school, eight have portables with air conditioning — 14 schools have no air conditioning anywhere on site. We understand when the weather is hot and humid, it’s extremely hard to teach and learn in such an environment. Open win- dows and fans will only go so far in alleviating a hot classroom. We’re also cognizant of the fact the DDSB is spreading out the schools that will be get- ting AC installed geographically to ensure there’s fairness in the three-year process of what schools get air conditioning and what schools don’t. Moreover, we understand and appreci- ate the school board has a reasonable plan to pay for the installation costs, namely to apply for Ministry of Education funding under the renew buildings program. As well, some of the AC installation funds would come from the sale of a DDSB surplus school site. Mostly our trepidation surrounds the mammoth operating costs — $564,000 annu- ally to be exact — that go along with hav- ing AC in these schools. It’s a high premium indeed and it’s money that won’t directly be going into educating Durham’s students, and that’s where it should be. After the three-year program has run its course, the DDSB should stop its AC retrofit- ting ambitions right there, unless it is a new- build situation. OuR VIEW DDSB’s air conditioning ambitions a costly affair Reader says it’s her right to donate to causes of her own choice To the editor: Re: ’Teach your children the right lessons in life’, letter, durhamregion. com I’m not sure why letter writer Larry Hoffe was shocked that some people choose not to give out Hal- loween candy. My husband and I do not have children and yet each year I pay out money (and it’s way more than the cost of a couple of coffees, by the way) and hand out candy, but that’s up to us as we choose to, many others choose not to. Also, I reserve the right to open my front door to whomever I choose and I’m sorry, but sometimes I don’t want to buy the gross-tasting choco- late or the Girl Guide cookies which I don’t eat. I reserve the right to donate to causes of my choice not whoever comes “begging” at my door. Colette Godfrey Bowmanville Two years ago I was honoured to return as MP for our community. In those two years, we have made tremendous prog- ress at improving the lives of Canadi- ans. The new Canada Child Benefit (CCB) eliminated benefits for the most wealthy and increased benefits for everyone else. Not only did it lift 300,000 children out of poverty; for the average family in Ajax, it means $6,270 a year — tax free. In fact, in Ajax alone nearly $100 million in payments will go directly to families that need it. Further focusing on the middle class, we lowered taxes for nine million Canadians and for small businesses by asking those making the most to pay a bit more. On average, this means a savings of $540 a year for the average family. We have also kept our promise to return the age of eligibility for Old Age Security back to 65, reversing the changes made by the last govern- ment. Moreover, we have increased the Guar- anteed Income Supplement for single seniors, thus stabilizing the financial security of almost 900,000 single seniors, while at the same time strengthening the Canada Pension Plan for all Canadians. Also in Ajax, I am proud of our initiative to expand the protection of the Rouge Nation- al Park, incorporating one-third of the airport lands in northern Pickering. This park is a first of its kind and with our investments in clean water and waste water treatment, pub- lic transit in Durham and the Greater Toronto Area, we are working hard to get Canadians moving and keeping the environment around them healthy. The net result is an economy that is work- ing. After a decade of anemic economic growth, averaging only one per cent a year, we are now leading the G8. Growth in the GDP this year is on track to be greater than 3.5 per cent — our best year in more than 10. Not only are we leading the G8 nations in economic growth, but we are in job creation as well. Since we came to office, the economy has generated more than 500,000 new jobs. More than 60 per cent of these are full-time. I am proud of what we have been able to achieve together, but there is still so much more left to do. Our economy is greatly improved, but it has to work for everyone. We are commit- ted to building on the success to date to ensure your life and those of our neighbours here in Ajax and across Canada are improved. — Mark Holland is the member of Parliament for Ajax Liberal government improving the lives of every day Canadians mark Holland Politics du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 2 9 , 2 0 1 7 11 AP ***cleaver As low as Commission1% * NEW CHOICEREALTYLTDBROkERAgEIndependently Owned and Operated www.MincomRealty.ca 905-428-4557FREE Home Market Evaluation *Limited Time Offer *Terms & Conditions Apply $aving YOU THOU$anD$... NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING “This transaction will allow us to oper- ate more efficiently through increased geo- graphic synergies in a number of our pri- mary regions,” said John Boynton, president and chief executive officer of Torstar Corpo- ration. “By acquiring publications within or adjacent to our primary areas and selling publications outside our primary areas we will be able to put a greater focus on regions where we believe we can be more effective in serving both customers and clients.” Metroland Media will continue to oper- ate the St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Peter- borough Examiner. The goal is to drive efficiencies geo- graphically, according to the company. Effective Monday, the daily publications that will close are the Barrie Examiner, Oril- lia Packet & Times and Northumberland Today. The eight community newspapers clos- ing are the Bradford Times, Collingwood Enterprise Bulletin, Fort Erie Times, Innisfil Examiner, Niagara Advance, Pelham News, Inport News (Port Colborne) and the Thor- old Niagara News. All of the publications were bought as part of the non-cash transaction – as the properties have approximately similar fair values – between Torstar and Postmedia. Postmedia intends to continue oper- ating the Exeter Times-Advocate and the Exeter Weekender, but is closing all the other properties it acquired in the deal by mid-January. The commuter paper Metro Ottawa, which employs 12 people full-time and 13 people part-time, including three in edito- rial, will close, as will Metro Winnipeg, with 12 full-time and 15 part-time positions, including four in editorial. Both 24 Hours Toronto, which under Postmedia had no staff directly employed by the paper, and 24 Hours Vancouver, which had one employee, will be closed. In all, nearly 300 full- and part-time employees will be affected, including those working in editorial, sales, circulation and distribution. All will receive severance packages. “This transaction allows Postmedia to focus on strategic areas and core prod- ucts, and allows us to continue with a suite of community-based products, in a deep- ly disrupted industry,” said Paul Godfrey, executive chairman and CEO, Postmedia. He said the costs of publishing dozens of small community newspapers in the regions means that most of them no longer have viable business models. “The growing strength of digital giants has caused seismic shifts in the allocation of advertising revenues – putting all media companies under massive pressure,” said Andrew MacLeod, president and Chief Operating Officer, Postmedia. “Our digital strategies are showing promising signs but we must take all possi- ble actions in order to give these new initia- tives time to grow momentum while man- aging the decline of legacy revenue streams and their associated costs.” Torstar newspaper deal creates better geographic synergies: president TORSTAR from page 1 What the deal includes Properties Acquired by Postmedia from Torstar: Belleville News Brant News Central Hastings News *Exeter Times-Advocate (and the Exeter Weekender) Frontenac Gazette Kanata Kourier-Standard Kingston Heritage Meaford Express Metro Ottawa Metro Winnipeg Nepean/Barrhaven News Norfolk News Orleans News Ottawa East News Ottawa South News Ottawa West News Our London Quinte West News St. Lawrence News St. Mary’s Journal-Argus (and the St. Mary’s Weekender) St. Thomas/Elgin Weekly News Stittsville News Stratford City Gazette West Carleton Review Properties acquired by Torstar from Postmedia: 24 Hours Toronto 24 Hours Vancouver Barrie Examiner Bradford Times Collingwood Enterprise Bulletin Fort Erie Times Innisfil Examiner Inport News (Port Colborne) Niagara Advance *Niagara Falls Review Northumberland Today Orillia Packet & Times Pelham News *Peterborough Examiner *St. Catharines Standard Thorold Niagara News *Welland Tribune (Properties with an asterisk will not be closed.) du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 2 9 , 2 0 1 7 12 AP AFTERNOON SHIFTSUPERVISORFULL TIME Mature person to supervisesmall crew for plant clean up, andvarious tasks as instructed. We offer competitive wages andadvancement for the right candidates.Wage negotiable based on experience. If you are energetic, enthusiastic and canwork reliably within a team environment,we will provide the training you need tosucceed.
