The former Petticoat Creek Library and Community Centre is now named after George Ashe, who lived from 1932 to 2014 and spent a good part of his life dedi- cated to public service. Council voted to rename the facility the George Ashe Library and Community Centre at its last meeting before summer break, and the ribbon cutting and cele- bration took place just days after the first council meeting in Sep- tember. “This is overwhelming real- ly,” said George’s son and Ward 1 regional Coun. Kevin Ashe. DURHAM — A young woman was robbed after responding to an online ad about a cellphone for sale on Wednesday. The 20-year-old Oshawa resident trav- elled to the Ajax GO Station for a meeting around 7 p.m. on Sept. 13, Durham police said. A man who met her grabbed her cash and fled on foot. He’s described as a black man in his 20s, about six-feet tall with a medium build and black hair. He wore an orange hoodie with a Nike logo, grey jogging pants, black run- ning shoes and carried a bag with an Adi- das logo. Woman robbed after responding to online ad for phone in Ajax PICKERING — A clerk was assaulted during a robbery Thursday morning at a Pickering gas station. Police are seeking a lone suspect in the incident, which took place shortly after 6 a.m. on Sept. 14 at the Husky station at Bayly Street and Toy Avenue. He demanded cash but ended up fleeing with the clerk’s personal property, Durham police said. No serious injuries were reported. The suspect is a black man, about five- foot-nine, who wore a dark t-shirt and pants, a black and grey hat and black shoes with a white trim. Clerk assaulted during robbery at Pickering gas bar OSHAWA — Police divers are participating in the ongoing investigation into the murder of a woman whose torso was found last week in the waters off Oshawa. Members of the Toronto police Underwater Search and Recovery team joined Durham officers in the search of Lake Ontario Mon- day, police confirmed. The inves- tigation began when anglers fish- ing from a pier in south Oshawa noticed the torso in the water around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 11. Although an autopsy has not determined a cause of death police have deemed the incident to be Durham’s eighth homicide of 2107. Investigators are hopeful a DNA profile will help to identify the vic- tim. Homicide police are also con- sulting missing persons reports from other jurisdictions as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-579- 1520, extension 5407 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The event is organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints to mark September as hunger action month in Ontario as well as Canada’s national hun- ger awareness week. The goal is to collect 150,000 pounds of non-perishable food items for Feed the Need in Dur- ham, an organization that distrib- utes food to more than 60 food banks, soup kitchens, shelters, school programs and more. Organizers are hoping to col- lect canned vegetables, soups, meats, and fruits; rice; pasta; beans; tomato and pasta sauce; mac and cheese; baby food and formula; and diapers. Drop off will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the following Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints locations: 7 Pethick St. in Bowmanville; 632 Thornton Rd. N. in Oshawa; and 119 Church St. S. in Ajax. Durham residents are invit- ed to participate in a Canada 150 community food drive on Sept. 23. DURHAM — One person was airlifted to hospital and is in life-threatening condition after a pickup truck slammed into the back of a transport truck on Hwy. 401 in Whitby Friday night. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the collision happened at about 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, in the eastbound lanes near Lak- eridge Road. He said traffic was slowing down due to construction in the area when a pickup truck ran into the back of a transport truck. Schmidt said the collision caused “absolute devasta- tion” to the pickup truck, part of which ended up underneath the transport truck trailer. The male driver of the pick- up truck was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehi- cle — he was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre where he remains in critical condi- tion. The eastbound 401 lanes were closed near the Lakeridge Road exit for several hours over- night, while OPP officers inves- tigated. The lanes reopened just after 4 a.m. Saturday. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call the Whitby OPP detach- ment at 905-668-3388. The facility serves kids and teens, seniors and more at the community centre, and of course provides the opportunity for people to learn at the library. “It’s fitting a library was named after my dad because he was an enthusiastic reader. After public life dad always had a book in his hands, and they were real books,” Kevin said, joking that they were not ebooks, but the ones with pages and creases. Mayor Dave Ryan spoke to George’s large family, and special guests in attendance. “It is truly important to memorialize and pay tribute to the contributions of individu- als like George Ashe who have helped make this community great,” he said. Ryan explained George had a long and distinguished political career in the earlier days of Pickering, when it was still a town. “We had drive-ins and sprawling farm fields, and as the population began to grow, George became the dynamic leader of our political landscape,” he said. Prior to moving to the GTA, the Ashe fam- ily lived in the Ottawa area, where George served on school boards, and was an Alder- man for Nepean Township in the early 1960s. Just two years after moving his family to Pickering, George was elected deputy reeve of Pickering in 1969 and became the first mayor in 1973, leading Pickering through its first term of town council. He went on to pro- vincial politics in 1977, when he was elect- ed as the Progressive Conservative MPP for Durham West.    George was re-elected in 1981 and 1985, and his roles at Queen’s Park were numer- ous, but included serving as parliamentary assistant to three ministers before he was appointed as Minister of Revenue, Minis- ter of Government Services, and Minister of Energy, and chair of the Management Board of Cabinet. He concluded his public service as a Catholic school board trustee in Clarington. “This is indeed a fitting honour, for a great man who played an instrumental role in Pickering’s history,” said Mayor Ryan. Kevin’s moving speech about his father was well received by the crowd of family and friends, some of whom travelled far for the event, as well as current and former staff, and politicians. All current Pickering coun- cillors, former councillor and current Pick- ering-Uxbridge MP Jennifer O’Connell and former mayor and MPP Wayne Arthurs were among those in attendance. Kevin also spoke highly of his mother, Margaret (Margo) Ashe. He said public ser- vice and public life can be a burden for fami- lies, and said his mother was a big supporter of his father during his time in politics. His mother not only campaigned for George, but for Kevin, too. “She loved cam- paigning; dad hated it,” he laughed. In 2013, George was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service. On Aug. 3, 2014, George died after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Kevin said his family has become a strong supporter of Parkinson Canada, which pro- vides services and education to people living with the disease, and supports researchers who are working to find a cure. The Ashe family donated some of George’s personal items to the Pickering Public Library for its archives, which includes photos, newspaper clippings and programs from the inaugural council meet- ings for the Town of Pickering and the Region of Durham. There is too much to pick apart here, so I can only beg readers to please go to Land Over Landings’ website and Face- book page, or contact us for all the current news, reports, studies, and facts, on avia- tion, and agri-food. We pride ourselves on our research. But in brief, a few points: 1. The “world-class transportation infrastructure” we need to focus on is rail: high/higher-speed connections between our major cities and (sigh) our existing air- port. 2. GTAA forecasts? Don’t make me laugh. For fun, check out the aviation fore- casts that originally got us into this mess. 3. The agri-food sector is a leading eco- nomic driver, especially in Ontario. Can- ada-wide it generated $108.1 billion and employed 2.3 million people (Ottawa, Ont. — (Marketwired — May 9, 2016) — Agri- culture and Agri-Food Canada). 4. $150 million spent since 1998 is a drop in the bucket compared to what has been spent — wasted! — since this whole sad saga began in the late 60s. I couldn’t agree more when the mayor argues we must stop looking at issues through a singular lens. This is precisely what certain area politicians have done for years, touting an airport as the solution to everything, and making up jobs numbers to back up weak arguments in an effort to attract votes. But saving this precious land for an airport that will probably never happen would be the biggest waste of all. Instead, cancel the airport, give long term renew- able leases to farmers and related busi- nesses, and allow them to invest and con- tribute to a revitalized agricultural econo- my. We need vision and courage in our politicians. We need them to look for- ward, instead of back to the 1960s when megaprojects like airports were touted as salvation. Thankfully, with every pass- ing year, there are fewer politicians who argue for paving farmland, and fewer still (at least in Canada) who neglect to at least mention climate change. The visionary ones acknowledge IT as the singular lens through which we must view every policy decision we make. Mary Delaney Land Over Landings A Pickering airport is a good thing for Durham To the editor:   Re: ‘Recouping Canada’s $150-million investment’, column, Aug. 23 As a businessman and pilot, I was more than a little interested in Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan’s column about a proposed regional airport for Durham Region. It is so refreshing seeing a politician standing up for the majority, instead of pandering to NIMBYs (Not-In-My-Back-Yard) and their secret agendas. Mr. mayor succinctly laid out all the economic and infrastructure benefits — while protecting the environment — so no need to repeat here. But it is worth noting who are the NIMBYs so vocally opposed to a much- needed new regional airport. And, per- haps as importantly, who and why others are backing their council packing, picket- ing, and letter-writing campaigns. We’ve got farmers leasing acreage from the federal government at rates far below market value, in the range of $10-$100 per acre. We’ve got homeowners in Claremont complaining about potential noise and environmental issues. Where do people living in 5,000-square-foot homes and big- ger get the credibility to toss stones over environmental issues? Then we’ve got the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and its massive $7 bil- lion debt. The GTAA — which raises rates indiscriminately and still can’t make money — is a true monopolist that fears competition. How about the City of Mississauga and its concerns about losing some of the busi- nesses (and their tax dollars) that have grown around Pearson Airport without thinking about the overall benefits to the GTA for a regional airport eastwards? There are others fanning the flames, but you get the picture about these NIMBYs: when you look behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz isn’t so great after all. An airport in Pickering is good for the GTA, Ontario, the economy, and, most importantly, delivers vital infrastructure to Durham Region. Samer Bishay Markham Pickering mayor needs to plan for the real challenges this century To the editor: Re: ‘Recouping Canada’s $150 million investment’, column, Aug. 23 Mayor Ryan’s op-ed piece is riddled with misleading claims and misapprehen- sions. Ottawa’s management of the federal lands has indeed cost taxpayers $150 mil- lion - but only since 1998, not 1972, as the Mayor Dave Ryan stated. He ignores the $275 million in expropriation costs, plus the years of expenditures leading up to the 1972 announcement and following from it. The total could be close to $1 billion by now. It’s no investment. It’s lost money. The airport wasn’t planned as a reliev- er, as the mayor implies. The intent was to replace Malton (now Pearson). The pre- vious government did not announce that “the Pickering airport would indeed be moving forward”. It announced that “there will be land set aside” for a future airport. This remains the government’s position. While Finance Minister Jim Flaherty did opine that airport construction might start as early as 2017, he did so in a radio interview, not a government announce- ment, and the opinion came to nothing. Yet, Mayor Ryan lauds regional plans to proceed with airport-supportive infra- structure — the tail wagging the dog, sure- ly! If construction of a reliever airport isn’t market-driven, that airport will fail. No study has ever shown that Pickering air- port is needed or would be a commercial success. Success is driven by the require- ments of airlines and cargo carriers, whose interests are best served by being at the hub airport. For them, splitting opera- tions between Pearson and Pickering or even abandoning Pearson for Pickering would be an unpopular, expensive, and risky undertaking. Experiences at other North American airports show that, for Pickering to succeed, Pearson would have to be shuttered or severely restricted. Not on the cards. The mayor calls the Pickering lands “uniquely positioned to play a strategic role” in a GTA-integrated network. But he must know that Pickering isn’t in the plans of the Southern Ontario Airport Network. He continues to tout putting large-scale greenhouses on part of the lands, ignor- ing how energy-intensive they are and that their presence would destroy Class 1 soil, an irreplaceable natural resource. Tak- ing the narrowest of views, he claims that agriculture creates few jobs. Ontario dis- agrees, Mr. Mayor. Check the province’s stats. Agriculture is a top economic driver here, creating hundreds of thousands of good jobs. Most worrisome of all, Mayor Ryan ignores the climate breakdown that’s already happening worldwide. The future (including aviation’s future) won’t be busi- ness as usual, all growth and no conse- quences. Quite the contrary. It’s long past time for our mayor to start showing cre- ative, responsible leadership by thinking and planning for the real challenges this century has in store. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 On campuses across the province, the annual rush of students start- ing school has come and gone, and routines are settling in. For many college students and their fami- lies, the focus is now on remembering new schedules, sorting out fall activities and get- ting sleep between work, family and count- less other commitments that pile up this time of year. If your family includes a student making their start at college, the transition has prob- ably been quite different than your K to 12 experience. You’re likely facing new challeng- es on top of the usual pressures that accompa- ny a new school year. For students, this transition is about expanding horizons, gaining more indepen- dence and testing themselves in an adult world. For loved ones, it’s about balancing an interest in and concern for your student with the need to adjust your role. Now is the time for you to transition to more coach than representative. If your student is living at home, you’ll be observing first-hand how they are adapting to the many changes in their life. Schedules are structured differently at college; your student may be in class in the morning, at work in the afternoon and back in class in the evening. Group projects, extracurricular activities and meeting new friends take up more time than they did in high school and the home- work seems never-ending. This can change the dynamics at home, particularly when your student feels under pressure or you feel left behind. If your student is away from home, you may be concerned about how they are navigating their new environment and so much change. It will take a lot of courage and patience on your part to balance the desire to stay in touch with the need to let them move ahead on their own. For everyone, the key to surviving this pro- cess is knowing that transitions take time. Most students find ways to navigate the post- secondary transition effectively and they learn most when permitted to manage their time and solve problems on their own. So how can you best help your student? Continue to touch base, listen carefully, offer encouragement and remind them that a net- work of experts is available to help. In the way that for any challenge “there’s an app for that,” on campus there’s a dedicated student service. From advocacy and accom- modation to health and wellness, career development to financial aid and beyond, Ontario colleges are committed to supporting students in all aspects of their experience — but the first step must be theirs. -- Meri Kim Oliver is the vice-president, student affairs, at Durham College. our opinionour opinionour opinionour opinionour opinion There is a long list of contenders pitch- ing for what could potentially be the biggest economic bonanza in recent memory. And, we’re glad to see Durham Region as part of a larger Greater Toronto Area-wide group that will be part of the bidding process. We’re talking about Amazon, folks, the Seattle-based international electronic com- merce colossus founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos. It’s among the most valuable retail- ers on Earth and is currently the eighth-larg- est employer in the U.S. Amazon has recently announced plans for a second headquarters, dubbed HQ2, separate from its existing one in Seattle. The company said the new headquarters would employ 50,000 people and be at least eight million square feet of development. As one can imagine, just about every municipality everywhere in North America is dreaming about what the addition of Ama- zon could do for the local economy. The term ‘game-changer’ doesn’t begin to describe the economic impact that would follow when Amazon sets up shop in your backyard. When Amazon claims most jobs from the creation of the new headquarters would pay in the $100,000 per annum range, there’s plenty of incentive for cities and regions to sit up, pay attention, and put their best proposal forward. Even the New York Times has attempted to handicap the various players who would be making a serious play for the new Amazon headquarters. Looking at it from solely a U.S. perspective, they believe Boston, Denver, and the Washington, D.C. area bids will be looked upon most favourably by the Amazon brass, and the paper’s money is on Denver getting the golden ticket. Which brings us to Durham Region, which is bidding as part of a larger, unified group of municipalities within the GTA that’s prepared to woo Amazon for its new headquarters.  At the most recent regional council meet- ing, Durham Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said staff is working with Toronto Global (formerly the Greater Toronto Mar- keting Alliance) to put forward a proposal. The Seaton lands in north Pickering is being offered up as one possible Durham location for Amazon’s HQ2. It’s perhaps a stretch bordering on a pipe dream that Amazon would set up shop north of the border to the GTA, possibly in Durham Region. But, there are many salient points Toronto Global can make in its pitch to Ama- zon regarding the high quality of life, our diversity, the large and educated workforce at its disposal, not to mention the GTA’s proxim- ity to many large metropolitan areas. Amazon is expected to make its final deci- sion next year. We can dream, can’t we? Durham joins united GTA for Amazon bid, that’s the way to go Column How to support your new college student meri Kim oliver Durham College letter to the editor Lack of transit would make airport in Pickering difficult to access To the editor: In a recent edition of your newspa- per I read of the renewed desire for an airport in Pickering. I am strongly in favour of any ven- ture that would provide employment in the Durham Region, airports included. Durham has a problem that many people choose not to recognize. It is very difficult to get to here from Toron- to, and vice versa. I needed to travel by transit on a Sunday afternoon, from Gerrard and Dundas streets in Whitby to Shepard Avenue and Yonge Street in Toronto. It took me about an hour-and-a-half, which is not good enough. The eastern GTA, both Toronto and Durham, are woefully underserviced by public tran- sit. Areas to the north and also the west have much better service. Road access to and from the eastern GTA is no better and still lags behind the other areas. Destination weddings are a fantastic choice for many reasons. Louie Di Tacchio and his team from Progress TravelPlus has been helping couples plan fabulous, awless destination weddings for more than 30 years. And, he loves it! He can help you, too! You’ll love that planning is stress-free! With destination weddings becoming more popular, many resorts and venues now o er complete packages that include the services needed for your big day. From o ciates and orists to catering and the special touches, all of the research is already done for you! Naturally, this makes the process much easier for our clients, and in return they’re more stress-free, calm, and able to enjoy the planning process. Your guest list won’t snowball! A destination wedding is a big time and money commitment for your guests and it reduces the actual attendees to those willing and able to invest that time and money for travel. You’re also more likely to keep your guest list to your nearest and dearest. You still have the option of throwing a local post-wedding party with friends and family who were not able to attend your nuptials. Destination weddings are more a ordable, too. is is everyone’s favourite reason to opt for a destination wedding. Not only do you get a beautiful backdrop for your ceremony and reception, but it all comes at a much lower cost than hosting your wedding at a traditional hotel or banquet hall venue! Due to your limited guest list, the total you spend on per person costs is dramatically lower. You’ll then be able to restructure your budget to splurge on photography and videography, decor, or even keep the savings for the future. Progress TravelPlus o ers planning and coordination expertise and will help make your destination wedding vision a reality. For planning and coordination, from A to Z, the Progress TravelPlus team can cover it all, wherever you want to be married! Looking forward to the honeymoon? Plan the perfect honeymoon with Progress TravelPlus. ey’ll be at the wedding show and have lots of exciting destinations to tempt your travel desires. Whether you’d like to escape to a tropical island, discover ancient ruins, or hide out at a luxurious all-inclusive resort, Progress TravelPlus will help you nd the perfect honeymoon spot. The perfect time to pack a day bag, hop in the car and hit the open road. You've got every thing you need: des- tination determined, full tank of gas, the wind in your hair, soundtrack picked out, the family singalongs to nostalgic tunes. You're just missing that one key element — snacks! It’s easy to pick up something on the go at our favourite coffee shop or drive- thru, but it’s even better when you can make them ahead of time from scratch at home. Quality snacks are a vital ingredient to any successful road trip. They make for a content group of passengers and happy travels as you set out on a new adventure. The perfect road snacks for me have a bit of everything, they hit all the tastebuds in one bite. Here are a few of my favourite road snack recipes for you to pack. Homemade Beef Jerky Who doesn't love a good beef jerky. It’s the quintessential road trippin’ snack with all it’s smoky, sweet, savoury, salty, peppery, chewy, meaty goodness. It is a must have in the car whether you are driving near or far, so sometimes I double this recipe to ensure I always have some on hand, or in the glove compartment, or the back seat, or my wife’s purse, or … you get it. It’s so easy to make yourself. This way if you want to add any of your other favourite spices or flavour com- binations, you can. For the yield it makes it cheaper than buying store bought, and as my wife can attest to, tastes way better. Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 4-6 hours Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: 1 pound flank steak (or eye or round) ¼ cup soy sauce 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp coarsely-ground black pepper 1 tbsp honey ½ tsp liquid smoke ½ tsp smoked paprika ½ tsp onion powder ½ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional if you like it hot) Method: 1. Begin by freezing your beef for about 20 minutes. This makes it easier to slice. 2. In the meantime, mix all other ingredi- ents in a bowl and set aside. 3. Thinly slice your beef going against the grain of the meat. You want slices that are approximately an one-eighth of an inch thick and about 1-1 ½ inches wide. 4. Place the beef and the marinade mix- ture in a large zip-lock bag, seal, and toss to coat the beef well. Refrigerate for at least an hour but overnight is better. 5. Preheat oven to as low as it will go. Somewhere between 150 and 170 degrees F will do the trick. 6. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack over it. 7. Lay beef strips on the rack in a single layer making sure that they don’t touch. 8. Bake in oven on the middle rack for 3-5 hours, turning the strips over half way through. Remember every oven is different so cooking times/temperatures may vary. 9. Let cool at room temperature and store in a tightly sealed container for up to 6 weeks. TIP: Ask your butcher to slice the meat for you to save time and effort. TIP: Use a food dehydrator (if you have one) to save on energy costs. Peanut Butter and Chocolate Energy Bars Everyone needs a jolt of energy on the road. Being in the car on the way to some- where exciting can be draining, especially for young kids. For parents, these bars work just as well as a cup of coffee for your vehic- ular alertness, and without any of the side effects of a caffeine boost. For the kids, they just can’t wait to get where they are going and start having fun. So give them one of these to get them ready to face the day head on with loads of energy and enthusiasm. Unless you want them to sleep in the car, in which case, don’t. But I always stand by my motto of “simple ingredients, prepared sim- ply” and with no actual cooking involved this recipe is no exception to the rule. With only three ingredients and a little effort, you can easily make these right at home. Prep time: 15 minutes Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: 10 oz (275 g) pitted dates 1 cup salted and roasted peanuts (or any other nut) 1 cup chocolate chips or chunks Method: 1. Place ingredients into a food processor and blend together until it starts to form a doughlike texture and there are no longer large chunks of anything, 2 or 3 minutes. 2. Line a sheet tray or loaf pan with parch- ment paper and press the mass into it, mak- ing sure to press firmly and evenly to ensure smoothness and no air pockets. 3. Wrap and stick in the fridge for at least 30-45 minutes. 4. Unmould and cut into bars about the size of your average granola bar, or bigger if you desire. 5. Wrap individually and store in the fridge until ready to take with you. TIP: I prefer these straight out of the fridge, but they are just as good at room tempera- ture making them perfect for road trips. — Chef Matthew Ness has been cooking in some of the best restaurants in the GTA for 12 years. Stir in curry powder, turmeric, cayenne and cinnamon, then add beans and stir to coat. Cook about 3 min, then stir in contents of coconut milk can. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook 8 to 12 min or until beans are tender-crisp. Remove from heat and stir in lime juice. Garnish with cilantro. Take for example the several Vinea Wine Fairs and wine tastings that were held last week. Vinea is the association responsible for the promotion of Swiss wine. In the town of Sierre and also its Chateau Mercier, well crafted and superb wines of the Canton (wine district) of Valais were featured. Valais is located within the French speak- ing part of Switzerland as is the Canton of Vaud. The particular 'Sierre fair' featured the wines made throughout Switzerland and included 67 exhibitors. In addition to the pinot noir and chasse- las, which make up the brunt of Swiss wine making, there were grapes unique only to Switzerland and in some cases unique only to certain specific vineyards. Grapes that I had never heard of were available for tasting. For example there was the humagne rouge, an almost extinct grape that is making tannic but delicious wine and the humagne blanche (no rela- tion to the rouge) whose wine is full bodied and full flavoured. I was also introduced to the petit arvine, a highly praised, thick berried grape variety Indigenous to Valais and makes fruity, fra- grant and delicious wine. The Cornalin (cross between alpine red grapes petit rouge and mayolet) produces a powerful, concentrated, almost purple wine that in my opinion requires time to develop with black cherry, black raspber- ry and clove in its arsenal. Definitely a food wine with strong meat dishes. While there were many wine styles and grape varieties new to me, I did find some old standby varieties that were so very well made. Of course there were the pinots and chas- selas (also known as fendant) but I was also amazed at the well made merlots from the Ticino Canton Wine Fair, which was in the Italian speaking district near the Italian border.         In fact both the merlot rouge and merlot blanc were so well made that it was hard to pick one over the other. The surprise of my stay was the almost perfect viognier, sauvi- gnon blanc and pinot gris wine that I tasted from this Canton. One superb viognier was fermented in amphora style containers. It is so very sad that these wines are made in such little amounts that most will never make it to our markets but it is still possible to obtain some by contacting the Société des Alcools du Québec (SAQ) at their web- site: www.saq.com. Just go to its search engine and put in Swiss Wine. — Chuck Byers is a member of Wine Writ- ers’ Circle of Canada. After putting hubby through University, Betsy gave birth to two sons and quickly became involved in the community. While raising a family she volunteered her time to the Canadian Cancer Society and was a fixture on the executive for the Pickering Baseball Association for many years. Along with supporting Bob's business activities she was recognized as a top Avon representative for over 30 years. In between, she enjoyed life's simple pleasures like curling up with a good book and a glass of wine. She will be remembered for her homestyle gourmet cooking, her general knowledge of almost everything and an endless supply of anecdotes and idiomatic expressions. A confidant to countless friends and mom to the entire neighbourhood "Momma G" welcomed all with an open table and an open heart. Betsy, beloved wife of Bob.
