There were 822 homes sold in Durham in August, a 9.75 per cent increase over July. The average selling price was $587,172, up three per cent from July and an 8.3 per cent increase year- over-year. However, that average selling price still represented a 16.5 per cent drop from the April peak of the real estate market. Listings were also up 16.2 per cent over August 2016 with 1,497 new listings last month. “Home ownership continues to be a good invest- ment,” said DRAR president Roger Bouma. “It remains the only investment that you can live in, raise your family and make memories, while ensur- ing a nice return over time. Hot classrooms a health issue for their children who have a rare skin condition Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A Pickering couple whose children have a rare, painful skin condition is taking their fight to the Human Rights Tribu- nal of Ontario, after two years of unsuccessful attempts to get air conditioning in the kid’s classrooms. Heidi Graf and Christopher LeBlanc have a six-year-old boy and four-year-old girl who both have epidermolysis bullosa, a genetic condition that results in extremely fragile skin prone to chronic blisters and open wounds. Children with the condition are often called “butterfly children” because their skin is as fragile as a butterfly’s wings. Graf says discussion with the Durham District School Board started in 2015, when their son started junior kindergarten at a Pickering French immersion school — the family has asked that the children’s names and the name of their school be withheld to protect their privacy. The school only has air conditioning in the office and library, which Graf says poses a challenge for her kids, because heat and humidity make epidermolysis bullosa worse. “The stickier the skin is, the more fric- tion there is. Just like a sweaty hand running across a table,” she explains. The family made an accommodation request to the school board, asking for an air conditioning unit in the classroom. They provided supporting medical docu- mentation and were optimistic the request would be granted. “At first, it didn’t seem like it would be a problem. I wasn’t worried,” Graf says. However, months turned into years and as of Sept. 5 when the children started this school year — they are now in Grade 1 and senior kindergarten  — there is still no air conditioning in their classrooms. Graf says the DDSB has offered alternate accommodations such as placing household fans in the children’s classrooms, or allowing them to go to the office or library when they want to cool down. “What five or six year old wants to leave their friends and go alone to the office or the library?” she asks. The school board also offered to transfer the children to a school in Ajax that is fully air-conditioned, however the family is con- cerned that it is far from home and doesn’t offer French immersion. “What’s wrong with making things a lit- tle bit easier for someone who’s dealing with constant pain?” Graf says. “Air conditioning is going to allow them to be more comfortable in their classroom and the wounds to happen less frequently.” After reaching out to school board trust- ees, the Ministry of Education and Ontar- io Ombudsman’s office, the family filed a human rights complaint, which is expected to be heard by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario in the coming months. “Privacy legislation precludes us from commenting on this situation,” the DDSB said in a statement. “In these situations, we always strive to offer a number of accommo- dations for the student involved.” Epidermolysis bullosa is very rare — it affects about one in 30,000 people. There is no cure and it is often referred to as “the worst disease you’ve never heard of.” Symptoms vary from person to person and even from day to day. Graf says her children often experience blisters on their hands, feet and jointed areas, noting their skin can tear open “like a ripe peach” just from falling down. Because many people have never heard of the condition, it can be especially challeng- ing for students seeking accommodations at school. “It can be hard for schools to understand how severe it can be,” says Dave Molinaro, vice-chairman of DEBRA Canada, a non- profit organization that provides care and support for families affected by epidermoly- sis bullosa. For example, he says many children with the condition wear bandages under their clothes, which would make them even hotter than their classmates. Molinaro called the local family’s situa- tion “disheartening. “We’re very surprised they’ve had to take it to this extent.” Pickering parents file Ontario human rightscomplaint over lack of school air conditioning Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland PICKERING -- Pickering parents Heidi Graf and husband Christopher LeBlanc have been trying for two years to get air conditioning in their children’s classrooms. Their kids both have a rare genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa, which is made worse by heat and humidity. Walk around the neighbourhood, wander through your favourite natural area or take a drive in the country. Everywhere you go you’ll see there’s a bumper crop happening. And lots of birds, chipmunks and squirrels are going to be happy this winter, with plenty to eat. Don’t tell me plants can’t communicate. Every few years or so, just about all the trees in a forest, in some mysterious silent agreement, put out a great mass of seeds, such abundance that some will sprout and grow no matter how many hungry rodents and other seed-eaters show up to feast on them. This is one of those years. Poor or spotty seed production in off years helps curtail the population boom that happens when mice, voles and chipmunks start having lots of babies, with so much to feed them. Most noticeable, perhaps, are eastern white cedars, since so many people plant cedar hedges. The small, green cone clusters are turning golden now, making some folks wonder what’s wrong with their cedars, which are suddenly "turning brown." The top branches of many spruce trees, both white and Norway, are dripping with cones. Squirrels in my neighbourhood keep snipping them off and letting them crash to the ground, then scrambling down to collect the harvest. It’s not just a local phenomenon. Ron Tozer, retired naturalist in Algonquin, reports great cone crops on balsam fir, white pines and hemlocks throughout the park. And it’s not just conifers pro- ducing seeds. Yellow birch, ironwood and many maples are into the act. A neighbour with a magnif- icent red oak near her house says she jumps every time an acorn falls on her roof. My sister in Peter- borough has a steady stream of blue jays and robins coming to her mountain ash berries. Winter finch forecaster Ron Pittaway hasn’t yet put together his prediction about what colourful northern birds might show up at local feeders this winter. Maybe siskins, purple finches and redpolls will have so much to eat elsewhere they won’t have to move south at all. But if they do, they’ll find lots of food waiting for them. Red crossbills have already been reported in Haliburton and Uxbridge. Be sure to check out the dense cone crop on spruces leading to the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve in south Whitby this Saturday, where the 16th annual Birds, Butterflies and Beavers Nature Festival will be in full swing. Fun, exciting nature immersion for the whole family guaranteed! Festival information: 905-433-7875. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. By doing nothing more than tilting our head and lifting our gaze to the sky and the treetops, good things happen inside us. That makes sense to me, if for no other rea- son than raising our eyes to the heavens creates a (sometimes much-needed) per- spective shift. When you look up, you can- not help but be aware that you are part of a much bigger picture and those problems that seemed so huge when you were down- cast and staring at your feet or your own navel are not necessarily as important as they’d like you to believe they are. Looking up connects us to Heaven, God, the universe, and spirit ... help and guid- ance. Looking down, not so much. I sometimes think that looking back- ward, too, is not the healthiest of choices. Whether the past holds pleasant or pain- ful memories, staying there too long is not a good idea. And regardless of what has happened, good or bad, in our histories, the only way forward, frankly, is forward. Understand your history, by all means; learn from it and appreciate it. For no mat- ter what it contains, it was all a gift. But do not hang around there too long. The past is dead. It’s not a place for the living. How can anyone healthily move forward while carrying the enormous weight of the past? You can’t be in two places at once. And you can’t stand still. So, let it go. Learn from it, as I say, but release it and keep moving forward. Most of us have been shaped to a great- er or lesser degree by our past. When we are children we are, of necessity, reliant on others and we trustingly hand over a good deal of the power to shape ourselves to our parents, elders, and institutions. Those people do good, middling, and sometimes horrible jobs of it. But even if outside influ- ences have made a complete hash of our past, the future is and always will be com- pletely in our own hands. So, if you find yourself looking down or looking back too much, turn your head. Look up. Leave regret, anger, and blame behind where they belong and instead see possibility, hope, potential. Stop dwelling on mistakes and start dreaming of won- ders. You are and always have been the author of your own life. If you don’t like the previous chapters, stop re-reading them and start telling a new story, a better story. The story you deserve. — Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column neil crone Enter Laughing how to submit a letter to the editor: EmaiL newsroom@durhamregion.com FaX 905-579-2238 Write to us Every now and then look up from your life Pickering mayor’s column shows he’s bereft of new vision To the editor:   Re: ‘Recouping Canada’s $150-million investment’, column, Aug. 23 Thank you for publishing the op-ed piece by Mayor Dave Ryan. It served to promote a public discus- sion on Pickering’s future. It also allowed Mr. Ryan to show what an old fashioned, old school, old boys network politician he is, pretending to move forward while looking into the rear view mirror. He is a tired mayor at the head of a tired council, bereft of new vision and unwilling or unable to embrace anything but the status quo. It also underlines the need for Pickering to clear the decks of the current council. It’s long past time to change a decades-old culture of developer-driven politics that per- sists in Pickering. Joe Bezubiak Pickering Epic fail. That’s the perfect term to describe the results of the In the Zone Traffic Blitz con- ducted by the Durham Regional Police Ser- vice last week. Despite a public awareness campaign weeks in advance and countless warnings in newspapers, television and radio, motorists couldn’t resist putting the pedal to the metal the first week of school. The traffic blitz was conducted Sept. 5 to 8 around neighbourhood schools in Durham Region. It resulted in 1,366 tickets being issued, which included 809 tickets for speeding, 89 for stop sign violations, 33 for careless driving, 21 for seatbelt infractions and 28 for distracted driving. One would hope with the warnings about the back to school traffic blitz that motor- ists would be on their best behaviour. But they’ve proven to be nothing but consistent in their ignorance. Sgt. Matt Flower said Sgt. Matt Flower says the number of infractions seen during the annual campaign tends to hover around the same amount each year. “They really kind of always stay right around that. In 2015, it was just over 1,400. In 2016, it was just over 1,300,” he said. During the campaign officers were spread out across Durham Region through- out the day, not just at drop-off and pickup times. But it was the morning and afternoon rush periods where many problems were noted, specifically moms and dads double parking to let out their children. “The school buses couldn’t even get through and moms and dads were letting the kids out of the car and they were run- ning out between cars so these are some of the issues we deal with,” Flower said. While this type of driving or parking behaviour is dangerous, there were three motorists who had their vehicles seized due to street racing and stunt driving-related offences. One of the most serious offences though continues to be distracted driving due to the use of cellphones while driving. “What’s happened is people have gone from holding the phone at their ear to hav- ing the phone in their lap and they’re tex- ting and it’s far more dangerous,” Sgt. Flower said. The DRPS doesn’t conduct the In the Zone Traffic Blitz because officers enjoy handing out tickets. At the end of the day they want to make sure students and drivers are safe. Terry Fox Run in Ajax this weekend Police seekingDNA profile as investigation into torso found in lake near Oshawa continues OSHAWA — An autopsy has failed to determine the cause of death of a woman whose torso was found in the waters of Lake Ontario near Oshawa Monday night. Further testing will be done in an attempt to obtain a DNA profile, police said Wednesday. Homicide detectives are reviewing missing persons cases from other jurisdictions as the investigation continues. Durham police continue their investi- gation into what is deemed a suspicious death. There is evidence of trauma to the torso, found in the waters of Oshawa’s har- bour on the evening of Sept. 11, police said. Fishermen on a pier made the grisly discovery around 8:30 p.m. Police con- ducted an extensive search of the shore- line and the marine unit combed the waters offshore throughout the day Tues- day. Sgt. Matt Flower says the number of infractions seen during the annual campaign, which has officers targeting school and community safety zones in every municipality across the region, tends to hover around the same amount each year. “They really kind of always stay right around that. In 2015, it was just over 1,400. In 2016, it was just over 1,300,” he said. The zero-tolerance traffic enforcement campaign is known as “In the Zone” and is conducted by all members of the branch (about 18 officers), along with staff from local divisions based on availability. In total, 1,366 tickets were handed out between Sept. 5 and 8 for various offences, including 809 tickets for speed- ing, 89 for stop sign violations, 33 for careless driving, 21 for seatbelt infractions and 28 for distracted driving. “This is a wake-up call for drivers,” said Flower, super- visor of traffic services. “They get so complacent over the course of the summer in those school zones and then all of a sudden, (school starts) and they’re driving the same way.” He added that the numbers tend to be greater than when the blitz is held at other times of the year, such as after Christmas holidays or March break. “It’s because there’s been an eight-to-10 week lull in traf- fic issues comparatively speaking to what they see on that first day back to school. And it’s not just back to school — it’s back to work as well.” While offences were spread out fairly evenly across the municipalities, some areas were busier than others, he noted. “There were lots of charges in the Oshawa area, Pickering as well." During the campaign, officers are sent out on a rotational basis to ensure the most visibility during peak periods. “They’re out all day, but where we want our most visibil- ity is during that drop-off and pick up time,” Flower said. “From the traffic standpoint, we’re not just looking at speeders and distracted drivers in those areas. We’re also looking at the moms and dads dropping their kids off at the schools who are double parking and things like that that are causing issues.” One complaint came in from a school in Clarington regarding the number of cars parked on the road. “The school buses couldn’t even get through and moms and dads were letting the kids out of the car and they were running out between cars, so these are some of the issues we deal with.” According to Durham police Const. George Tudos, fines can vary from as low as $110 for basic infractions to $490 for distracted driving (plus three demerit points on convic- tion), and well beyond that depending on the rate of speed. In Ontario, speeding fines double in areas identified as com- munity safety zones, as well as school zones. “Every fine is different; I know the speeding one, it all depends on the amount of speed, whether it’s in a school zone or a community safety zone so they can differ,” he said. For those travelling 50 kilometres per hour over the post- ed speed limit, the penalties are more severe. “It’s what we (consider stunt driving) and this is an auto- matic court date and the fines can be, I believe up to $1,000 fine and you get your driver's licence suspended and your vehicle impounded as well.” Three motorists had their vehicles seized during this year's back-to-school safety blitz due to street racing and stunt driving-related offences. Distracted driving also continues to be a major issue with the growing number of people with smartphones and driv- ers becoming more crafty in their use of the devices, said Flower. “What’s happened is people have gone from holding the phone at their ear to having the phone in their lap and they’re texting and it’s far more dangerous.” In response, Durham police has had to adjust their tac- tics to continue catching those breaking the law. “We’ve become covert ourselves; traffic services has gone to more unmarked vehicles. We don’t have as many marked cars like we used to,” he said, adding that motorcycles have also been a useful resource. “People just aren’t looking for a motorcycle as a marked police unit as often and the officers can look down into the cars a lot easier ... we’ve stationed officers in high rises with binoculars, we’ve stationed them in buses. “As tricky as the driver is trying to be, we’re trying to meet that with the same amount of covert observations.” But it’s not just around back-to-school time that police want drivers to slow down and be more careful where chil- dren tend to walk, explained Const. Tudos. “We’re enforcing these rules on a daily basis, so it is a daily routine for our traffic services branch. We do a lot of campaigns, we go out to schools and talk to kids about pedestrian safety as well too because it is a shared responsi- bility — not just people driving but also pedestrians to make sure they’re crossing at the proper areas.” Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school to confirm where the appropriate stop areas are to avoid con- gestion and run-ins with other vehicles. “The main thing is to make sure that on this return to school week that it’s free of injury to all our young commu- nity members,” said Tudos. “We want to make sure the kids are safe — that’s the No. 1 priority — that pedestrians and people that are on the road- ways are safe.” Page 8 - Today’s editorial Durham Regional Police’s back-to-schoolsafety blitz a ‘wake-up call’ for drivers Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland WHITBY -- Durham Regional Police Constable Jon Stinson pulled over a car in a Community Safety Zone on Rossland Road on Sept. 6. Crawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time Water can damage anything it comes across, includingcarpets, flooring, furniture, drywall, electronics and more. At the first sign of water entering your basement, it’s time to callthe experts. Trying to repair it yourself can lead to delays andmore damage being done. You want to work with professionals who will repair your basement leak right the first time. The first step in repairing a basement leak is pinpointing where the problem is. Every home is unique, and there isn’ta one-size-fits all solution for every type of leak. You needsomeone with experience who can determine the source of the water and come up with the right solution. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing inAjax has been in the business for over 35 years and has beenin over 15,000 homes in Durham Region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine and I’m still learning,” he says. Once the source of the leak has been determined, Gordon willdevise a solution that will be both successful and cost efficient. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of thehouse and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’sabsolutely necessary.” Sometimes, the best solution is to stop the leak from inside. This will also avoid having to dig up any landscaping. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board is a very good solution,” says Gordon. “It’s extremely efficientand cost effective by saving costly damages to exteriorlandscaping.” It’s important to fix the leak as soon as you spot it, as the longer you leave it, the more damage it will do. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with theproblem until it escalates into a bigger one. You have toget in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. For more information, call Gordon at (905) 686-6880. TORONTO, Sept. 27, 2016 – Here is some news that may bring comfort: soothing colours will be all the rage in home decor in 2017. That is the forecast of leading brand CIL® paint in unveiling the top colour trends for the year ahead, dominated by soft, saturated shades of violet, grey, sand, terra cotta, mustard and grey-green. “The colours for 2017 are mellow but with more pigment than the pastel-like hues of last year, emitting a warm, rich feel,” said Alison Goldman, brand manager for the CIL paint brand of PPG. “Think clean, minimalist decor,” she said, explaining that “next year’s palette is a reflection of consumers’ craving for purity and simplicity – an antidote to the overwhelming amount of information people receive daily and the ever-growing complexity of life.” The hottest colour of them all will be subtle, serene violet, Goldman said, announcing Antique Violet (50BB 46/091 | V37) as the brand’s 2017 Colour of the Year. “Next year’s stand-out colour can be described best as a beautifully sophisticated and muted midtone shade of purple that leans heavily towards a blue-grey,” she explained. Incorporated in all elements of home decor in 2017, from walls to furnishings to accessories, the new purple works particularly well with concentrated down-to-earth colours that promote a sense of tranquility, from brown-bag tones and beachy driftwood neutrals to charcoal and grey-infused blues and greens. Others topping the list of CIL paint colours trending for the coming year are: Stone Harbor Greige (10YY 48/071 | WN24) sand, Moderne Mauve (90RR 56/048 | R35) tan, Silver Mountain Creek Green (70GG 38/059 | CN20) grey-green, Soft Copper Orange (80YR 48/274 | O24) clay, Soft Cloud Blue (90BG 72/088 | B57) light mauve, Neo Mediterranean Mist (30GG 54/045 | B09) green, and Sunnybrook Yellow (40YY 61/299 | Y37) mustard. Bolder hues such as teal, deep coral and onyx will be used as accents to balance the soft shades, Goldman explained. When decorating with the 2017 colours, she recommended using a creamy – rather than pure – white for trim and doors to complement the relaxing vibe of the palette, and completing the decor with trendy and equally warm copper, bronze and terracotta accessories. “Less is definitely more with this palette – the colours are crisp, grounded and liveable with the ability to refresh mental activity regardless of the style of the room,” Goldman said. Adaptable to any setting, from traditional to modern, the shades both add depth to open spaces and coziness to smaller rooms, she added. For more information about the 2017 paint palette by CIL paint, and to try the colours using virtual tools, visit www.cil.ca. Available in Canada at The Home Depot®, Walmart®, and Rona® stores and at independent paint dealer locations, CIL paint has been a trusted brand in businesses, communities, schools and homes across the country for 85 years. With 1,165 colours in its palette, CIL paint has developed a colour mood system that guarantees a perfect match across a wide spectrum of colours.CIL Paint Colour Trends: Soothing colours to take spotlight in 2017Serene violet will be hottest colour of all, according to the brand With its beautiful lakeside setting, charming small-town ambiance, easy access to GO Transit and highways, and a vibrant lifestyle, Whitby is anideal location for growing families. Newcomers get familiar with campus at two-day orientation event DURHAM — Durham College saw a record num- ber of applications from international students for this school year and has 1,110 international students regis- tered — up from 835 last year. This year’s group represents 55 countries. More than 700 of the new international students attended DC’s two-day International Student Orienta- tion event earlier this month. Students got tips on adapting to the college environ- ment, getting part-time work in Canada, and finding local housing. There was also time for some fun, with a trip to Oshawa’s Lakeview Park and  a “Race Around DC” event inspired by “The Amazing Race Canada” to help get the new students acquainted with the campus. “Durham College’s reputation for providing qual- ity education has spread, resulting in a record number of applications from international students around the world this year,” said Larissa Strong, manager of inter- national student support. “While students will be chal- lenged to learn and grow in their chosen fields by their professors in the classroom, they will also find support outside the classroom as they adapt to their new learn- ing and living environment. With services on campus including academic, career, and health care, interna- tional students will feel well-supported as they strive to find their personal success.” Durham College sees increase in international students du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 7 22 AP Take the time to drop byyourlocal PrincessAutoprincessauto.comorshoponline a t SALE STARTS September 19 TH, 2017 WHITBY•1550VICTORIAST. The four-week campaign focus- es on educating residents about fire safety and fire-related problems in their community. During the campaign, select Pickering households in the L1V, L1X and L1W postal areas will receive an automated telephone message from Pickering fire Chief, John Hagg, identifying what resi- dents can do to protect their family from fire. Around 1,800 additional households will also receive a ‘Get Real Durham’ information card in the mail, and a visit from Pickering firefighters, who will be going door- to-door educating residents on the reality of fires in the community. “The Get Real Durham campaign has been very successful in edu- cating our residents on fire safety issues in the community,” said fire Chief, John Hagg. “It is an excel- lent opportunity for our firefighters to interact with our residents, and answer any questions they have regarding fire safety and preven- tion.” Chief Hagg hopes through edu- cation, awareness, and teamwork, fire-related fatalities, injuries, and property damage can be reduced. Visit facebook.com/CityofPick- ering during ‘Get Real Durham’ for fire statistics and tips. Additional information s available at pickering. ca/GetRealDurham. Canada Coaster By Musfirah Waqar, Grade 7/8 winner Turns out, the craziest thing in Cana- dian history happened to me the sum- mer of Canada 150! It was an absolutely amazing experience, one that I’m sure was the very best ever. It was a bright and sunny day. The streets were quiet and there were no children playing in their yards. But when I woke up that afternoon, everything seemed quiet until my sis- ter screamed “We’re late!” Five minutes later we were running down the side- walk, decorations spilling out of the boxes we carried. We went to the park where I saw my friend Zoey. “Hi Zoey!” I called, “What’s all this about?” I asked her. “You mean you haven’t ridden the 150 ride?” Zoey said, her eyes widening. “What? What’s the --” I didn’t have time to finish as Zoey propelled me through the crowd. We stopped in front of a roller-coaster. “Mr. Delaney! Elizabeth hasn’t ridden the 150 coaster!” A short man peeked outside and gave Zoey thumbs up. She pushed me into the coaster. “Brace yourself” were her only words as she strapped me up. I didn’t even have time to scream, the coaster rushed ghastly and stopped at a tunnel. I could hear Zoey. “This is the Canada Coaster, from here our journey begins. First stop: July 1st, 1867.” “How can I visit 150 years back in the past!” I thought. As if in answer, the coaster jolted, then flew. This time I did scream and closed my eyes. When it stopped, I saw a lot of peo- ple standing in front of a building. Then it hit me it was July 1st, and I could hear the declaration in which four provinc- es were coming together and forming a country called Canada. Cheers rang through the crowd. As soon as I tried to unbuckle myself, the coaster flew again. “Next stop: July 1st, 2167.” announced Zoey. This time I saw a lot of robots. As I got closer I realized the robots were peo- ple wearing shiny metal suits. They had banners that said “Canada 300!” Now I was 150 years into the future! I was real- ly amazed and glad to see all the tech- nology being used for the betterment of humanity all around the world by Cana- dians. I was still mesmerized, when the coaster flew once again. “Last stop: July 1st, 2017” said Zoey. Now I was flying over the park. I could see my entire neighbourhood putting up banners that said “Happy Canada 150!.” Everyone was cheering and laughing. Kids were running around with Cana- dian flags. People were setting up fire- works. It was amazing how we all came together, different races, religions and cultures. “Canada is home to everyone, no one is left out.” I thought. I then real- ized that all the preparations were for Canada’s 150th birthday! By the time the ride came to a stop it was midnight. I and Zoey got out of the coaster looking in wonder at each other, I smiled at Zoey. No words were need- ed, because as soon as we stepped out, fireworks started. And we both watched them, for we knew it was finally Canada 150! The Panthers started the 2017-18 season off on the right foot Friday, skat- ing away from Markham with a 5-4 decision over the Royals. The victory was satisfying on a num- ber of fronts, including the fact they fin- ished 43 points behind the North Divi- sion leading Royals last season, and it took 10 games into that season to pro- duce a victory at all. “It’s definitely good to get two points from a division rival who won our divi- sion last year and will probably be a force again this year,” said David Dema- rinis, head coach and general manager of the Panthers. “To go into that barn in their home opener and get two points is a positive, but even more so is how we played,” he continued. “I thought for a team that’s only been together for four days, we really pushed the pace and dictated the play. Our young guys stepped up, we had great veteran leadership with good goaltending.” Josh Argier, an off-season acquisition from the Stouffville Spirit, scored twice, including the clincher short-handed into an empty net with 1:03 remaining. Mitchell Doyle, Anthony Stavrou and Davis Teigen-Katsumi scored once each, while Steven Elliott assisted on a pair and goalie Adam Wisco made 37 saves for the win in his OJHL debut. “Hopefully we can take that momen- tum into Friday night,” said Demarinis, referring to the team’s home opener Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. against Stouffville. The Panthers have big plans for the home opener, including a tailgate party on the patio outside the Pickering Rec- reation Complex beginning at 5:30 p.m. Pickering mayor Dave Ryan is expected to be on hand for the on-ice opening ceremony, along with Panthers alumni including Andrew Dissanayake, Brett Connolly and Garrett Winder, the franchise’s career scoring leader. “Basically, we’re hoping to come together and start building that rela- tionship back up to what it used to be back in the 90s and early-2000s,” Dema- rinis said, hoping for a big fan turnout. “We’re excited by that.” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 1 4 , 2 0 1 7 29 AP SP O R T S Joe Millage Guest columnist Size matters when it comes to fields of play ‘Rightsizing’ the ice for young hockey players is long overdue Common sense tells us that the play- ing surface and equipment need to be adjusted according to the size, speed and skill of the participants. Few people would disagree that chil- dren need equipment that fits them. Proper fit is important for safety and for skill development. The right size racquets, bicycles and hockey sticks are essential, so that the developing athlete can properly manip- ulate them and develop good tech- niques. Yet, for decades, there has been resistance when we have tried to have young children play hockey on a small- er ice surface. Soccer and tennis have had strong support in “rightsizing” the game, and this year, Hockey Canada and the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) are mandating that children under seven play cross-ice games. If you look at the research, the development of players improves dra- matically when small-area games are played. In fact, many of the top junior and pro teams routinely practice small- area games to hone their skills (there are great videos available on the OMHA and Hockey Canada sites). In cross-ice games, players touch the puck twice as often, there are six times as many shots and twice as many bat- tles for the puck. There is a YouTube video — From a Child’s View, Parents Find Full-Ice Hockey No Fun — where adults play on a surface that reflects the dimensions a child would experience. The rink is 350 feet long by 135 feet wide, the nets are seven feet tall by nine feet wide and par- ticipants described the game as “the worst skate of my life.” This year, “rightsize” hockey is in play and I’ll bet the athletes have a lot more fun. So, load up your double-double, grab a seat and enjoy the new hockey initia- tion program. Joe Millage is a master course instructor with the OMHA, chair of ParaSport Ontario and an advocate for lifelong activity who believes that “everyone wins when everyone plays.” Email: emtjoe@rogers.com. Pickering prospect named top defensive player, leads team in on-base percentage as Canada finishes fourth THUNDER BAY — Outfielder Den- zel Clarke and pitcher Landon Leach of Pickering came up just short of bring- ing home a medal from the U-18 Base- ball World Cup in Thunder Bay. The Canadian team overcame a shaky start to the tournament to reach the bronze-medal match Sunday, but Japan pitcher Ginji Miura struck out 12 over seven shutout innings to lead his team to an 8-1 win. Clarke went 0-for-3 in the game but had an excellent tournament, leading Canada with a .487 on-base percent- age and also earning the nod as the tournament’s top defensive player for his work in right field. He had seven hits in 25 at-bats, including a pair of doubles, while drawing 10 walks, scor- ing six runs, and driving in five. Leach, who lost his only start to Korea in the second game of the tour- nament, pitched well in relief Sunday, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk over four innings, while striking out three. Overall, he allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in seven-and-one-third innings. Canada opened the tournament with losses of 7-6 in extra innings to Chinese Taipei and 11-7 to Korea before reeling off wins of 6-5 over Italy, 8-2 over Australia, and 15-3 over Nica- ragua to reach the super round of the tournament. After an 8-3 loss to the United States, Canada beat Japan 6-4 and Cuba 4-2 to reach the bronze-medal game. “We were in a hole early (in this tournament) so I’m really proud of this team and the way we competed here,” said coach Greg Hamilton in a Baseball Canada press release. “Fourth place in a world championship is nothing to hang your head over.” The U.S. won the tournament for the fourth straight time, defeating Korea 8-0 in the gold-medal game. The Ridgebacks, ranked second in Can- ada, are now the lone team in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with a perfect record (5-0-0). The local duo of Taijah Henderson from Ajax and Cassandra Sribny of Pickering took turns setting the other up to break a 1-1 tie late in the match, with Henderson scoring in the 72nd minute and Sribny just before injury time. The Ridgeback will be looking to keep the winning streak going this weekend at home, with games against Ryerson Satur- day and Toronto Sunday, both 1 p.m. starts at Vaso’s Field. Men's 15s team opens with 33-29 win over Fleming Knights OSHAWA — On a weekend where Durham College was looking back and celebrating 50 years, an old tradition returned to campus as the men's and women’s rugby teams played their first games of the season. Led by head coach John Watkins, the men’s 15s team earned a 33-29 victory over the Fleming Knights at Thompson Field in Raglan. "It was great to be back on the rugby pitch," said Durham College athletic director Ken Babcock, in a press release. "There was a demand to bring rugby back on campus and to be able to watch them represent the college on Satur- day was something special. It also never hurts when you pick up a win in your first match." The Lords offence was spread out with Adam Stralak, Malcom Hooper, Jacob Gordon, Isiah Mottley and Zach Bedder all scoring tries. Eddie Oliveira had three conversions while Austin Brown had one to round out scoring for Durham. Last year, Fleming finished in first place in the OCAA east region with a 5-1 record, outscoring their opponents 209- 90 while going on to win the OCAA silver medal. The women’s team started off its inau- gural 7s campaign with a win and two losses against the Fleming Knights at Thompson Field in Raglan, falling 15-0 and 25-5, while managing a 10-5 win in between. Fleming has traditionally been a strong team in the OCAA rugby circuit, having won back-to-back OCAA cham- pionship women’s 15s titles in 2015 and 2016. “We (the coaching staff) were pleas- antly surprised by the effort of the team today,” said head coach Chris McKee, in a press release. “There was a lot to build upon and we are looking forward to watching this team develop.” Taylor Lantaigne scored both tries for the lords in the victory. Both teams will be competing in exhi- bition games throughout the first season. Rugby returns as Durham College celebrates 50th anniversary Rising star Denis Shapovalov also part of team taking on India this weekend in Edmonton PICKERING — Pickering’s Brayden Schnur will be part of the four-player Cana- dian tennis team playing against India in a Davis Cup World Group playoff match in Edmonton this weekend. Schnur, 22, will be joined by rising star Denis Shapovalov as well as veterans Vasek Pospisil and Daniel Nestor for the Sept. 15-17 matches at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton. “This is a critical tie for us as we look to stay in the World Group again next year,” said head coach Martin Laurendeau in a Tennis Canada press release. “We believe we are a World Group nation and can win the Davis Cup title in the near future, and a victory in Edmonton is the first step.” Schnur will be suiting up for Canada for the first time, having previously acted as a hitting partner at Canada’s 2014 World Group playoff tie in Halifax. A former standout National Collegiate Athletic Association player with the Uni- versity of North Carolina, where he was a three-time all-American, Schnur is cur- rently ranked No. 202 in the world. He is playing his first full season as a pro, and has clinched two  International Tennis Federation Pro Circuit titles in addition to making the semifinals at the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challenger in Granby in July. Shapovalov, 18, will be competing in his third Davis Cup tie for Canada. After impressive performances recently at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and the U.S. Open, he has risen to No. 51 in the ATP rankings. Pospisil is currently ranked world No. 82, while Nestor, who is set to compete in his 51st Davis Cup event dating back to 1992, is ranked 43rd in the world among doubles players. India’s team includes world No. 155 Ramkumar Ramanathan, No. 158 Yuki Bhambri, No. 490 Saketh Myneni, and dou- bles world No. 17 Rohan Bopanna. Canada, with a Davis Cup ranking of 16th, will be facing India (18th) for the first time. The winner will compete in the elite World Group for 2018 while the loser will play in Group I of the regional zones, one step below the top tier. When it comes to legal matters, from real estate transactions to creating a will and power of attorney, the readers turn to Woitzik Polsinelli Barristers & Solicitors in Whitby for help. The law firm is nominated for Best Law Firm in the 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards. “I would like to thank all of our clients and the readers for nominating us,” says Mark Woitzik, who heads up the estates division of the practice. “We work very hard to make sure that our clients are happy and to provide the best service possible for them and this award recognizes our efforts.” When buying or selling a home, you will need to enlist the services of a lawyer. Woitzik Polsinelli was the first law firm in Ontario to offer all-inclusive pricing. The only additional fees a buyer will incur are the land transfer tax (for which you can receive a rebate if you are a first-time homebuyer) and the registration of the deed and mortgage. After you retain their services, the team will provide you with a very detailed letter explaining everything required prior to closing. “My team shares my goals of making your legal experience with the firm a very positive one, and to ensure that your real estate transaction proceeds smoothly and quickly,” says Marco Polsinelli, who heads up the firm’s real estate division. “We promise to make your transaction as seamless as possible.” For many, creating a will and/or a power of attorney is on their to-do list, but for one reason or another, it just never gets done. Having a valid will and power of attorney is extremely important, and having them drafted is more affordable than you may think. Without a valid will, your assets will be passed on to your beneficiaries according to statutory guidelines - not according to your wishes. This can create added expense and frustration for your beneficiaries. To ensure your wishes will be honoured, you must have a valid will. Woitzik Polsinelli offers flat fees for both couples and individuals who need to create a will or power of attorney. Discounts are available for real estate clients. The law firm is located at 700 Brock Street South in Whitby. It is open Monday to Friday, and is wheelchair accessible.
