The City of Pickering will include in its 2018 budget an interdepartmental work plan to address the aging population in the city. Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland Pickering’s 90-plus age group is rising Kristen Calis KCalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — The demo- graphics in Pickering are changing, and as people live into their 90s and 100s, the city is working to make the community friendly for residents of all ages. At its last meeting before the summer break, council passed a motion that the 2018 budget include an interdepartmental work plan that addresses the aging demographic in the community, and sets aside the necessary fund- ing to do so. The city already has a number of programs for seniors, but the new plan will go beyond a piecemeal approach. “We want every department in Pickering to incorporate planning for seniors in all departments,” said Ward 1 city Coun. Maurice Brenner, who introduced the motion. According to Statistics Canada, by the year 2030 more than 25 per cent of Canada’s population is projected to be older than 65. “Our housing strategy is a big one,” Brenner said of the items he would like to see in the action plan. The city has to factor in transitional hous- ing for seniors, said Brenner. “One of the main things is there’s no feasi- ble way for people really to downgrade from their house into a bungalow, and there are very few condos around,” said Pickering resi- dent Peter Bashaw, 72. Bashaw, who sits on Pickering’s accessi- bility advisory committee, said Seaton is not senior friendly. The two-storey or three-sto- rey townhouses and houses, are not accom- modating to seniors or people with disabili- ties. Brenner also mentioned this plan needs to be in place before Seaton is up and run- ning. Bashaw said when seniors do stay in their homes longer, they’re going to have to mod- ify their houses, to make them more acces- sible, such as installing lifts and more acces- sible showers. “I don’t know what type of breaks we could get there,” he said. Brenner’s motion noted 2015 population estimates in Durham Region identify 27 per cent of the population aged 55 and older. By the year 2031, this age group will represent 34 per cent of the population of Durham, with the largest gains being seen in seniors age 90 and older. “The census track has confirmed it’s the fastest growing population, not only in Dur- ham but in Pickering,” said Brenner. Between 2005 and 2015, the 90-plus age group increased by 154 per cent, with the greatest growth in Pickering, where there was an increase of 200 per cent. In April, council passed the Age-Friendly Durham Strategy and Action Plan, a docu- ment designed to provide the foundation for a strong and vibrant community where older adults remain active, enjoy better health, and are more engaged and informed. Brenner feels the Region of Durham’s seniors strategy is a good one. “Municipalities need to drill down into it and take it from high-level to practical,” Brenner said. The Town of Whitby recently launched its age-friendly action plan. Aside from transitional housing, Bashaw would also like to see more curb cut-outs so seniors can walk in Pickering more easily. “Especially along Kingston Road. It’s a mess,” he said. Brenner said issues such as driveway snow clearing need to be formalized, and improvements to the already impressive seniors’ programming in the city need to be made. “Clearly it can’t meet the need in terms of the increases,” he said. Program costs, and the layout of parks will need to be addressed. “How do you design parks that include playgrounds, but also sitting areas for seniors, not just seniors, but for all ages,” he said. Businesses that are coming to Pickering will need to cater to all ages, and he noted this plan will also be a road map for busi- nesses and boards of trade. “If the percentages are getting as old ... our public service has to be catering to the mass- es and the masses are an aging population,” he said. But he said it doesn’t mean the city will forget about young people and infants. “It’s all part of an age-friendly communi- ty,” he said. “It just means rebalancing.” A seniors advisory committee meets monthly to discuss programming, events, and promotional opportunities for the city’s culture and recreation department, and they will be part of the input on this strategy. Brenner said public input will be a huge piece of the puzzle. “It will have massive community engage- ment, it needs to have it,” he said. And he wants to hear from people of all ages, not just seniors. Brenner said staff is planning to present more information on the plans to council on this matter in December, so members can be more informed before voting on the matter in the budget next year. He noted this will not create a tax increase, and suggested the city may be eligible for funding from upper tiers of government. Durham police deny ‘snitch list’ is theirs Online document false, and a threat to many, say police Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM – Durham police have denied a so-called “snitch list” posted on social media originated from within the service. “This is not our document,” Const. George Tudos said of the material, pic- tures of which have been posted online. “We have no involvement in that,” Tudos said. The postings include pictures of pages that appear to have been photographed while lying on a desk. The lists include names and monetary sums, as well as comments indicating charges against some of those named have been dropped or reduced. Publication of the documents sparked a storm of commen- tary online, with some declaring them bogus and point- ing out obvi- ous discrepancies, including misspelled names. Some respondents expressed shock at finding their own names on the list. One Oshawa-based community page decried publication of the material, cit- ing the possibility the information “will get people killed.” Const. Tudos said Tuesday that Dur- ham police had just been made aware of the material. He couldn’t comment on whether or not police will further investi- gate publication of the material. “Obviously it’s a safety concern for the people named in it,” Const. Tudos said. Some “snitch” related sites – none of them purporting to be from Durham Region – have gone even further, posting photos and other information on alleged police informants. Pickering, Ajax businesses recognized for conservation efforts AJAX — Pickering and Ajax businesses are among Veridian Connections' custom- ers who have achieved outstanding electricity conservation results in 2016. These 'Conservation Champions' were leading participants in the utility’s energy effi- ciency and demand management programs that provide valuable financial incentives and reduce operating costs. Veridian’s 2016 Conservation Champions in Durham are Farm Boy in Pickering, Sklar Peppler Furniture in Ajax, and 20 VIC Retail in Pickering Town Centre. Giant Tiger Stores Limited and Rogers Communications also made the list. “Each year, Veridian pays tribute to our business customers who make reducing energy consumption an integral part of their business,” said Melanie Walls, key accounts representative. She said the Independent Electricity Sys- tem Operator’s Save on Energy programs — delivered throughout Ontario by the prov- ince’s electric utilities — are good for com- munities, the environment, and a business’ bottom line. "There are energy efficient programs to assist companies from the smallest of retail stores to the largest industrial complexes," she said. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 1 2 , 2 0 1 7 5 P TheAjax/PickeringRaidersandPickeringHockey Associationwillpartnerwith theCityof Pickering torecognize the achievements ofPickering’s own,DrakeCaggiula. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 our opinionour opinionour opinion Column A Perfect Landing for Trent University Durham – GTA As a graduate of Trent University and proud resident of Durham Region for 28 years, I am inspired to write about the vision- ary announcement last week by the City of Oshawa of a generous donation of 1.8 acres of land to Trent University Durham GTA, on Thornton Road South. Clearly, the residents of Oshawa, their city council and Durham Region appreciate the potential for education to transform lives and communities. In my previous role as executive vice pres- ident of Human Resources at a large multi- national bank where I had the opportunity to work with more than 83,000 employees in some 55 countries, I developed a clear under- standing of the importance of education. Edu- cation opens doors. It inspires innovation. It promotes equality and encourages diversity. And, in Durham Region, post-secondary edu- cation has been a key cornerstone in build- ing a new regional economy, preparing thou- sands of graduates to be our next generation of future makers. The power of education is the main reason I was drawn to volunteer at my alma mater, Trent University. I’ve noted that people are sometimes sur- prised to learn that Trent has been granting degrees in Oshawa and Durham Region for more than 40 years. Starting with night class- es back in 1974, with part-time and full-time studies run out of Durham College and later UOIT, Trent moved to a dedicated Durham campus of its own on Thornton Road South in Oshawa in 2010. I’ve secretly harboured a special soft spot for the Durham GTA campus because it has always attracted a diverse stu- dent body, high school and transfer students, mature students, and many who are the first generation in their family to attend university. Students have shared with me that this makes for a vibrant, open and intimate cam- pus. I was drawn to Trent’s Peterborough campus as a student in the 1970s by an evi- dent dedication to providing a unique, per- sonal learning environment. I am happy to say that I have seen and felt this same spirit and approach at the Durham GTA campus during my frequent regular visits. The City of Oshawa has referenced the sup- portive community at Trent Durham GTA — and did not hesitate to make special mention of the campus’ $47-million contribution to the economy of Oshawa and the Durham Region. The city’s land donation will enable an expan- sion that will only multiply that impact. Two new buildings will be added to the existing Trent Durham footprint, (originally the site of St. Michael’s Elementary School). It’s exciting for me as an alumna to see that the expansion will reflect Trent’s unique way of integrating academic space with residential space — so effective in creating smaller living- learning communities of supportive scholars Sue Graham parker Guest columnist who really get to know one another. The sec- ond building will be an academic building fronting onto Thornton Road South that inte- grates green space as a central element. Trent Durham GTA continues to grow (enrolment was up significantly last year; summer course registration more than dou- bled year-over-year; and current data for new fall student registration shows increases around 25 per cent over fall 2016). Yet this is a campus that maintains a rarefied learning environment where class sizes are person- al, learning is purposeful and results can be transformational. My Trent education was a springboard to a life that continues to be meaningful, diverse, exciting and successful. As I attended the Trent Durham GTA Convocation ceremonies last month, I was struck by the promise and potential in the air that day. I have no doubt that these Trent grads will redouble what was invested in them and go on to contribute to our community, our country and the world. Congratulations and a heartfelt thank you to the citizens and the City of Oshawa for hav- ing the foresight to invest in that energy and in a future fuelled by education. — Sue Graham Parker is Vice-Chair of the Trent University Board of Governors and a graduate of Trent. She has been a Durham resident for 28 years. Recently retired from a 36-year career with Scotiabank, her last position was Executive Vice President, Global Human Resources. And at one time she was District Vice President of Durham and Senior Vice President of Ontario for the Bank. Canada is in the midst of celebrating its 150th anniversary, and while most Canadi- ans took to festivities on July 1, there are still many ongoing ways to celebrate this mile- stone throughout the remainder of the year. Durham MP Erin O’Toole is using this anniversary event to kick off a Canada 150 program called #DurhamFor150. This pro- gram is meant to honour our country’s 150th anniversary by honouring its people. The MP is asking residents to nominate the volunteers who make Clarington, Scu- gog and north Oshawa remarkable — using the hashtag #DurhamFor150 on social media. The program will carry on through- out the summer into the fall and allows the community to highlight good deeds of others who are making contributions to improve the people, places and events in Durham. Everybody knows a volunteer. These are the people who step up in the communi- ty by taking time out of their lives to bene- fit others. Go to any children’s soccer, soft- ball, baseball or lacrosse game and you’ll see volunteers in action. Ever been to a ribfest? Rotarians make these spectacular events happen every summer and proceeds raised go back into the community. School may be out for the summer, but think back to all the parental helpers who are in the schools helping with fundraising, class trips and other special events. This is just scratching the surface of the type of work volunteers do. People who help out make our commu- nities the special places they are to work, live and play. They don’t do this for any special recognition. They do it out of the kindness of their hearts, because giving back is a good thing. It’s nice that MP O’Toole is using this opportunity of our country’s 150th anniver- sary to salute the people who make Canada great. “It is extra special; we should use the opportunity to shine the spotlight on extra deserving people,” said O’Toole. “I’m privi- leged to have this position to shine the light on special things in Durham.” It’s this type of giving back that makes a great leader, whether it’s in the commu- nity, at the office or working for the country in Ottawa. To nominate a volunteer, use the hashtag #DurhamFor150 on social media. O’Toole is not the only MP reaching out to honour Durham residents, though. His col- league Colin Carrie is also looking for people to nominate residents for a Canada 150 vol- unteer medal. To download a nomination package, visit www.colincarriemp.ca. Every MP in Durham, no matter their political stripe, is celebrating our country’s 150th anniversary. It’s nice to see residents of Durham are being saluted in these celebra- tions because Canada is great for many rea- sons, but its people, especially volunteers, make it the greatest country in the world. Durham Muslims rally to feed the hungry donating 3,000 lbs of food during Ramadan Food Drive To the editor: “Look who’s coming to lunch!” An intriguing headline on the website of Feed the Need Durham, one of many food banks in the region, tells us how people, including working families, have to rely on food banks to feed themselves and their children. It is shocking to many that in Durham people go to bed on empty stomachs, and not just in Dur- ham — many Canadians go through this painful experience as a norm. How ironic that while many of us are free to choose any menu item at our favourite restaurant, relishing the plea- sure and freedom of dining out, far too many Canadians are unable to afford even to eat in. During the recently concluded holy month of Ramadan, the Muslim com- munity from three different mosques in Durham Region, the Pickering Islamic Centre, Muslim Association of Whitby (Masjid e Ayesha) and Islamic Society of Durham, participated in a food drive to collect a total of 3,000 pounds of non- perishable food items, a major portion of which was donated to Feed the Need Durham. This food drive was organized by Friends Indeed Canada, the Paki- stani-Canadian Society of Durham. Food banks are a critically important channel to address this need, particu- larly during the month of Ramadan as it is an article of faith for Muslims to reach out to those who are in need. Hunger in Canada is a significant issue and citizens will continue to do their part, but we want to hear politi- cians tell us what they’re going to do about it? The issue of Canadians going hungry is one you rarely hear about in question period in Ottawa or in provin- cial or local levels of government. Why is it so hard to get this on the political agenda? There’s a lack of awareness of the magnitude of the problem and the seri- ousness of the problem at the political level. Vaqar Raees President Friends Indeed Canada (Pakistani-Canadian Society of Durham) ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ too important a book to be excluded from the curriculum To the editor: Re: ‘Durham teachers concerned school board is trying to kill To Kill a Mockingbird, news, durhamregion.com It seems there is some confusion about whether or not To Kill a Mockingbird should continue to be a prescribed text in Durham high schools rather than a proscribed one. For my part, I sincerely hope that the book remains on the curriculum. Yes, there is rac- ist language, including the “N” word. How- ever, in the hands of a skilled teacher, the use of such language can be explained that, while it is anachronistic and totally repulsive today, it was in common usage only a few decades ago and, unfortunately, still is in some circles. This presents an opportunity to sensitize students to the power of language and the harm it can inflict. Further, the story deals with the injustice visited upon a black man by a small-minded, largely racist community. While I understand that some black students and parents would rather not be reminded of such indignities ... quite rightly ... there is most certainly, at the very least,  a vital lesson there for students of other races. More importantly, the novel underlines the kind of injustices blacks routinely expe- rienced in the past and, sadly, still often do today. These are very powerful and necessary lessons for students of every race. I remember quite vividly how shaken I was after reading the book as a teen. It helped shape my outlook on life and how impor- tant it was to treat people fairly and respect- fully. Good literature should put us inside the shoes of others and bolsters our sense of understanding and empathy. For those who are upset today with the Black Lives Matter movement, I strongly suggest a thorough reading of this powerful book, as it will surely help explain why this movement even exists today. More than ever, this book should be kept on the curriculum, if only as optional reading. It is entirely too important to exclude. The gazebo, sponsored by Coldwell Banker R.M.R is up now and is just waiting for finishing touches. Just like all of their other projects, this one is a rousing success but let’s let Carol do the talking: “We have at least a couple dozen people visiting the garden and gazebo every day. Many of the people are visiting patients in the hospital and walk through the garden for a bit of a break. Most of them are cancer patients. I love how the staff get together in groups of 2, 3 or 4 and walk through the gardens on their lunch. Once the gazebo area is complete I’m sure it will be the loveliest place to rest and be quiet. The gazebo is up but we still need to finish the ground around it and box off the sono tubes. We can’t stain it until the fall as the wood needs to season for a bit. But once finished, it will be a sight to behold.” 3Walkouts,2Fireplaces,Skylight,HugeRec.Rm. However, when planning your summer vacation or gearing up for a sunny weekend getaway, it’s important to secure your home, too. Marc Barbeau, property claims manager from Intact Insurance, shares five items to include on your going-away checklist that will help protect your home against theft or damage. 1. Shutter your home and invest in security. Not only can a monitored security system with a posted sign help deter thieves, it may also qualify you for a discount on your home insurance. Draw your curtains, secure all windows and doors, and make sure all locks function properly. Install jams in sliding windows and doors and a safety bar on patio doors to help prevent access. 2. Trust a friend. Always let your insurer know if you’re going away for extended periods of time. Arrange to give a set of keys to a neighbour or family member who can visit your home regularly to make sure everything is in order while you’re away. This will help your home look lived-in and ensure any emergencies are covered. 3. Prevent water damage. In most provinces, water is the leading cause of home damage. Water damage is expensive and often difficult to eradicate. Identify and address water issues early to keep them from getting worse. Before travelling, turn off the main water supply valve to your plumbing system and drain any appliances that hold water. 4. Unplug. All electrical and electronic devices like computers, televisions and portable air conditioners should be unplugged in case a power surge occurs while you are away, which could damage your property. 5. Maintain a record. Create an inventory of your possessions. Take pictures or videos of your valuables and always keep receipts. These records may make it easier for police and your insurance company to track items should something be stolen during your absence. www.newscanada.com Top 5 summer home security tips du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 1 2 , 2 0 1 7 13 AP du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 1 2 , 2 0 1 7 14 AP 905-426-3338 (FEET) • 48 ChurCh ST. Pickering parent Jennifer Iwata rates it the No. 1 splash pad in Durham Region and Rotary Park in general the No. 2 park in the region. The top playgrounds in Durham Region Jennifer Iwata With over 300 playgrounds in Durham Region, not even half of which I have per- sonally visited yet, it is sometimes hard to narrow down the list to a ‘Top 10’. That is why I also rely on polling local readers to come up with the latest and greatest play- ground and splash pad favourites in the region. Here are the ‘Top 10’ playgrounds in Durham Region with some feedback as to why they made the list; 1. Baycliffe ‘Rocketship’ Park, Whitby – it is unique 2. Rotary Park, Ajax – it is very large 3. McKinney Park, Whitby – it is large with a rubber surface 4. Audley Recreation Centre Park, Ajax – dinosaur dig sandpit 5. Lakeview Park, Oshawa – lots of space, the lake keeps it cool 6. McLean Community Centre Park, Ajax - Durham’s first Safe Place to Play 7. Legends Center Park, Oshawa - tod- dler friendly 8. Rosebank South Park, Pickering – train themed (and the closest to wave at passing trains) 9. Darren Park, Whitby – great all- inclusive sand area 10. Port Darlington East Beach Park, Bowmanville – boat themed by the lake Here are the ‘Top 10’ splash pads in Durham Region; 1. Rotary Park, Ajax – with a great play- ground (see #2 above) and a lot of picnic spots in the area 2. McKinney Park, Whitby – play-ground (see #3 above) and skatepark 3. Port Darlington East Beach Park, Bowmanville – beach access and play- ground (see #10 above) 4. Baycliffe ‘Rocketship’ Park, Whitby – fun with water and sand, unique play- ground (see #1 above) 5. Beachfront Park, Pickering – beside the beach playground 6. Audley Recreation Centre, Ajax – fun splash pad features, and playground (see #4 above) 7. Darren Park, Whitby – toddler stream and fun with water and sand (see #9 above) 8. Randy Skinner Family Splash Pad, Beaverton Harbour Park, Beaverton – spinning water blasters 9. Amberlea Park, Pickering – brand new with a lot of spinning features 10. Carruthers Marsh, Ajax – fun with water and sand under umbrellas in the shade Which playground is our favourite? The one closest to home of course! That just goes without saying as it is always easier to walk to a local playground or park than it is to load up the kid(s) for a drive. The most popular playgrounds and splash pads in Durham Region can get very busy, especially during the summer months. That’s why we suggest trying out new places each summer and finding your own family favourite! To find more unique local playgrounds, splash pads, or skateparks in Durham visit www.durhamregionplaygrounds. com or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram as this year we will be sharing a cross-country collaboration with other playground bloggers of “150 Coolest Play- grounds in Canada” to celebrate Canada’s 150th! -- Jennifer Iwata is a Pickering parent who has lived in the area since 2011 and enjoys exploring local parks and play- grounds with her growing family. She start- ed the durham region playground reviews site as a hobby in 2014 in-between time she spends raising her family, her full time career as a Project Manager, and her local volunteering. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju l y 1 2 , 2 0 1 7 15 AP REUSEDAYS.Passiton. FOCUS ON FAMILY FOCUS ON SENIORS FOCUS ON HEALTH FOCUS ON FOOD & WINE Dreams really do come true for Grandview Children’s Centre After nine long years, the Provincial gov- ernment recognized the need for a new Grandview Children’s Centre in Durham Region. Grandview Kids will receive $31 million in funding for a new facility in Ajax. The momentous announcement was made at a packed Grandview in Oshawa on Friday, May 19 by Member of Provincial Parliament Tracy MacCharles. As a long-time supporter of Grandview Kids and also a member of Grandview family, we couldn’t think of anyone bet- ter to grant us this great news. MacCharles herself speaks fondly of the services her son received at Grandview so she knows first-hand the amazing work our pediatric team does. Grandview Kids has been in Durham for 64 years and now treats more than 6,000 children and youth with special needs pro- viding over 62,000 appointments per year but close to 3,000 more are on a wait list. The demand for expert pediatric rehabil- itation services in Durham is growing, and this announcement paves the way to posi- tively impact access for future generations of Grandview Kids for years to come. Children and youth with special needs and their families in Durham Region can now be assured to receive the specialized clinical therapies, medical services and supports they require in a facility that will be designed to optimize their strengths and inspire their achievements. It’s been a journey of many to get here. Grandview thanks our local MPPs, the Region of Durham and the Town of Ajax and all of the Durham municipalities for their tremendous support in making this dream a reality. To the Grandview staff, I am so proud of the contribution of each and every one of you. We have so much to be thankful for. Delivering this dream to the families in Durham will be the best work of my life and I am honoured to be able to do it alongside you. The reputation of Grandview is directly related to your excellence and this could not have happened without you. Thank you for all you do. To the Grandview kids, families, volun- teers, Centre and Foundation Board mem- bers, donors and our countless support- ers, I thank you from the bottom of my very full heart. Your advocacy work did not go unnoticed. Your voices rang all the way from Durham Region to Queen’s Park. Thank you. We can’t wait to begin building the future .. 2020 is in our sights -- Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann ECEDH, RN, BA, MBA has been CEO of Grandview Chil- dren’s Centre since 2011. Today, with more than 25 resorts, four theme parks, two water parks, world-class shopping, numerous dining locations, a multi-sport complex, and  a boardwalk promenade, Walt Disney World Resort offers so much to see and do that even the most seasoned Mouseketeers can find themselves a little overwhelmed.  To help make things easier, here are my top recommendations for planning a visit to the place “where dreams come true.” 1. Stay at the “House of Mouse”  Many people believe that staying off-prop- erty will automatically save them  money, but forget to consider hidden costs, such as transportation and resort fees that most nearby hotels often charge. In reality, stay- ing at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel is often the more  cost-effective and conve- nient option. 2. To avoid the crowds, avoid the rush!  Walt Disney World Resort is the greatest vacation destination in the world  for the young and young at heart, which is why it’s especially busy when kids are out of school. To avoid the crowds, schedule your trips off- season, if possible, when kids are back in school. 3. Arrive early, stay late…  My favorite times to be in the parks are first thing in the morning and later in the eve- ning.  The crowds are sparser, the Florida heat is at its most bearable and you’re able to avoid the frequent midday thunder- storms common to the Orlando area.  We usually do twice as much during these times in the parks than during peak hours (11 a.m. -4 p.m.).     4. ...but break in between  I have two young children and a full day at a Disney park from opening to closing is a recipe for a first-class meltdown.  We’re able to avoid this by retreating back to our resort hotel for some quiet time and a refreshing dip in the pool.  This allows us to refresh, avoid peak hours and return ready to enjoy the nighttime activities.  5. If you fail to plan, you must plan to be patient!  Go online and get familiar with My Disney Experience; it is a one-stop shop for invalu- able planning tools that will assist with cre- ating your magical vacation.  Once inside the parks,  use My Disney Experience to  find  locations for character meet-and- greets, check wait times for attractions, and continue planning on-the-fly.      6. Bypass (a few) lines  FastPass+ allows you to bypass lines at three participating attractions within the parks you are visiting that day. Discuss the “must-dos” with your family and determine whether or not you would like to use a Fast- Pass+ selection for them. Once decided, you can book them directly through your My Disney Experience account up to 30 days in advance or 60 days in advance for guests staying on-property.   7. You CAN take it with you!  Walt Disney World Resort allows you to bring one small bag into the parks, so take advantage to avoid paying for any neces- sities you already have! I have a dedicated park bag that includes: sunscreen, ponchos, diapers, baby wipes, snacks, water bottles, autograph books with pens, trading pins and more.  8. You WON’T do it all (in one vacation)!  This is one of the hardest aspects of a Walt Disney World Resort vacation for some to grasp – you simply can’t do it all in a single visit. Quality family time in a fun environ- ment trumps rushing through  experienc- es in an attempt to “get it done.”  Savor the moments you share with your family.  9. Your home away from home  Every Walt Disney World Resort hotel is like a theme park unto itself, so make time to explore and enjoy all that it has to offer.  Some have exclusive activities, tours and events unique to that resort hotel.  Set aside a day or two to soak by the pool and dis- cover the adventure within your temporary home.  -- A Pickering father of two and Toronto high school English teacher, Todd Dickerson is one of 12 new members with exceptional Dis- ney vacation knowledge added to this year’s 2017 Disney Parks Moms Panel as a Walt Disney World Resort specialist, where he will help likeminded families plan and make the most out of their next Disney escape.
