Couple living near Notion Road facility wonder what dust is doing to their health Kristen Calis KCalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Pearl Lofters and her husband Michael Hewitt are tired of sweeping the dust off their porch, car, lawn, plants, and even from inside their house. They say they’ve been suf- fering from the dust that’s com- ing from a nearby stone crushing facility, Strada Aggregates Inc., for the past three or four years. The plant is located on Notion Road in Ajax, near the Pickering border. “I clean every day. You can even write your name some- times,” Lofters said of the dust accumulating in the Notion Road and Pickering Parkway area. Lofters, a registered nurse, worries what the dust is doing to their health. “Dust is not a good thing to be breathing in,” she said. “And it sticks in the throat.” Questions to Strada Aggregates, which prides itself as being a big part of Toronto’s overall recycling solution, were not answered by press time. A mountain of debris, dirt and asphalt at Strada is hard to miss when sitting in the couple’s backyard. “Even though we would sell the place, they’ll look outside. So we’re stuck,” said Lofters. She has collected more than 85 signatures from neighbours, asking Strada and political leaders to help remedy the situation. She said trucks drive by and wet the roads in an apparent attempt to keep the dust down, but it isn’t helping. Lofters’ and Hewitt’s neighbour Ray- mond Alexander says his car is never clean as a result of the dust, and the fine steel par- ticles in the dust have caused damage to the paint job. “My wife hasn’t opened the back window for about three or four years,” he said. “I don’t go in the backyard anymore.” Alexander pointed to a nearby home, which the previous owners had sold, tired of the dust. The City of Pickering last year asked the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) to investigate and address air quality and dust issues and complaints on behalf of residents, and to take appropri- ate action to address these concerns. Council also passed a motion at its most recent council meeting asking that the MOECC report to the City of Pickering on its investigations, findings and any corrective actions the ministry has required Strada to undertake to address the dust problem. “Now therefore MOECC be requested to take further investigation and resolve the dust concerns as appropriate,” the motion states. Ward 2 regional Coun. Bill McLean point- ed out at the council meeting when the mat- ter was discussed, the MOECC gave a new compliance approval to Strada in March, which it relayed to Ajax. “I’m very confident and comfortable with the fact that this issue is being addressed, that residents are being looked after by the ministry and Ajax,” McLean said. But Ward 3 regional Coun. David Pick- les, who introduced the motion, said there should be communication with Pickering as well, and added he continues to receive complaints about the dust issues. “Today I don’t think enough is being done and complaints are still coming in in regards to this facility,” he said. MOECC spokesperson Gary Wheeler confirmed in an email, the environment compliance approval (ECA) for air and noise was approved on March 22. The compa- ny applied for approval to operate mobile crushing and screening units at the site. The review states emissions to the air include particulate matter and products of combustion such as nitrogen oxides. The ministry received 18 total comments from members of the public, which were considered as part of the ministry’s review of the application. “The comments raised concerns related to particulate emissions and dust from the site,” he said. The ministry has received and is review- ing Pickering’s motion. “The ministry has not received any dust complaints since July 2015 concerning the Strada Aggregates Inc. facility. Ministry staff will be visiting the site to follow up with the company about the requirements set out in the ECA,” said Wheeler. Requirements include: developing and implementing an air quality monitoring program, when requested by the Ministry, to measure the concentration of suspended particulate matter and/or dustfall discharged from their facilities and to monitor the dust mitigation measures; and to develop and implement a detailed complaint response procedure for recording, investigating and adequately addressing complaints. In one instance a projectile caused significant damage to a car. “This is incredibly dangerous,” Schmidt commented via Twitter. “Had this con- tinued it would be only a matter of time before someone would have gotten killed.” Everton Emmanuel James, 32, of Pickering is charged with three counts of mischief endangering life. He was arrest- ed Wednesday, May 31, and appeared in court in Toronto Thursday. Schmidt took to social media earlier in the week after reports of a man dropping objects off highway overpasses in Toronto. In the first incident, at about 10 p.m. May 28, a projectile sheared open the roof of a car, Schmidt said. No one was injured. “It was a cinderblock in a bag that was thrown down off the overpass,” said Schmidt. Witnesses reported two more incidents, at Yonge Street and Warden Avenue. Schmidt said an arrest occurred as a result of people responding to the call for information on the incidents. “People came forward with videos and photos and information that led to this arrest. Without that information this inves- tigation could have been much more dif- ferent,” he said. Schmidt urged citizens to report suspi- cious activity on or around highways. “The information you give could pre- vent a serious injury or a fatality, and that’s what we’ve seen here,” he said. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 our opinionour opinionour opinion column Reality is starting to sink in — my eldest child is heading to uni- versity in September. As a parent and a university professor who researches student success at university, I’m seeing everything in a new light. Hopefully, we parents and teachers have been preparing our kids to be ready for the independence and resilience needed for life at university, but there are a few things that can help youth to be suc- cessful once they arrive: 1. Choose a program that you love. Too often parents will ‘encourage’ their kids to choose a field that appears to have a direct path to a job — whether or not their child is interested in it. Four years is a long time to work hard at something you are not interested in … to then work in a job you find boring or hate is even more painful. Being employable is important, but not everyone can be a doctor, law- yer or accountant and the evidence sug- gests that employers want the so-called ‘soft’ transferable skills that can be gained through volunteer work, internships, stu- dent clubs and so on. 2. Attend Orientation (a.k.a. Frosh Week). Here, you will meet others who, like you, are just getting to know univer- sity life. You’ll likely meet others in your program, so there will be at least one familiar face in your first classes. 3. Become part of the university com- munity. Large universities can be over- whelming, so find a smaller community within the larger institution by joining a club or, if you can afford it, living in res- idence for at least one year. Don’t just attend class and leave — stop by the stu- dent centre, meet some people and get to know what’s going on. 4. Go to class. The easiest way to be successful is to go to class regularly. Every time you skip a class, it will become easier to do so. In a 13-week term where many classes only meet once a week, missing even one class means you’ve missed a lot. (If money motivates you, figure out how much you are paying per class to be at university.) Treat your classes like a full- time job that you are paying to do. 5. Be engaged. Sit near the front of the lecture hall, take notes, ask questions, participate in discussions and get to know others in your class. If you make a person- al decision to listen, learn and avoid dis- tractions in class (i.e., turn off your cell- phone/Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram/ video game/Candy Crush…), you will not only be better prepared for exams and assignments, but you might also enjoy your university experience. 6. Be open to new ideas. Going to uni- versity is about more than simply being trained for a job. It is a unique time of life where you are given the opportunity to immerse yourself in new ideas. Maybe you won’t love everything you have to do, but sometimes we learn more from those things that make us uncomfortable or that we don’t yet know that we need to know. — Alyson E. King, PhD, leads a team of researchers from across Canada who are conducting research on what successful university students from all backgrounds say they do to be successful. This research is funded by a Partnership Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. My kid is going to university in the fall! They may be small — only the size of poppy- seed — but ticks can inflict great pain in the form of Lyme disease. With that in mind, it’s important to know how to pro- tect yourself. Ticks can cause sickness to humans as some of the blacklegged ticks can cause Lyme disease, which is spread to humans through the bite of an infect- ed tick. While not all blacklegged ticks are infected, some can carry the bacte- ria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that can cause Lyme disease. Once again, as it has for the past 16 years, the Durham Region health depart- ment has started its annual blacklegged tick surveillance program, which helps to identify areas of blacklegged tick activity within the region and to help assess the risk of acquiring the disease. The health department has been ‘drag sampling’ for blacklegged ticks since 2010, and has collected and identified 46 in the region in the past five years. The process of ‘drag sampling’ involves drag- ging a piece of white flannel cloth over and around vegetation where ticks may be present. Seven out of the 46 black- legged ticks collected since 2010 have tested positive for the Lyme disease bac- teria. Symptoms of Lyme disease usual- ly occur within one to two weeks after a tick bite, but can be experienced as soon as three days or up to a month later. Symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue and a red rash that often looks like a bull’s-eye tar- get. If detected early, Lyme disease can be treated successfully with antibiotics. So, how do you protect yourself? Here are tips to protect you and your family from coming in contact with ticks: wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, socks and closed footwear; tuck pants into socks and wear light-coloured clothing, which makes ticks easier to spot; use an insect repellent that has DEET on cloth- ing and exposed skin; take a shower and examine your body thoroughly for ticks after each outing; and put a tick and flea collar on pets, and routinely check them for ticks. And, if you find one, remove the tick quickly, using tweezers while pulling the tick straight out as close to the skin as possible. Removed ticks can be saved in a container and submitted to the health department for further testing. Although the risk is relatively low to becoming infected with Lyme disease, there’s every reason to take precautions to make the risks even lower for you or your family members. Take care as tick season arrives in Durham Region du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 7 , 2 0 1 7 7 AP Department looks to pinpoint pockets of tick activity in the region DURHAM — The Durham Region health department has started its annual blacklegged tick surveillance program. While not all blacklegged ticks are infected, some can carry the bacte- ria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that can cause Lyme disease (LD). LD can be spread to humans through the bite of an infected tick. Tick surveillance helps to identify areas of blacklegged tick activity and to help assess the risk of acquiring the dis- ease. The health department has been ‘drag sampling’ for blacklegged ticks since 2010, and has collected and identified 46 in the region in the past five years. The process of ‘drag sampling’ involves drag- ging a piece of white flannel cloth over and around vegetation where ticks may be present. Seven out of the 46 blacklegged ticks collected since 2010 have tested positive for the LD bacteria. “Quickly removing ticks from the skin will help prevent infection, as trans- mission of the Lyme disease-causing bacteria usually requires the tick to be attached to the skin for at least 24 hours,” said Ross MacEachern, manager of environmental health with the Health Department. “Ticks removed from skin can be submitted to the Health Depart- ment for proper identification and fur- ther testing.” Only ticks that are taken off a person, not off of a pet, are submitted for testing. In 2016, the health department submit- ted 83 ticks for identification and testing. While four out of the 83 ticks submitted tested positive for the LD bacteria, only one of the four positive ticks was thought to have been picked up within Durham. For the most up-to-date information on LD risk areas in Ontario, visit Public Health Ontario’s website at www.publi- chealthontario.ca. Although the risk of becoming infect- ed with LD is low, people can reduce the risk by taking precautions when visiting and enjoying outdoor activities in brushy or wooded areas where ticks are gener- ally found. Precautions include: wearing long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, socks and closed footwear; tucking pants into socks and wearing light-coloured cloth- ing, which makes ticks easier to spot; using an insect repellent that has DEET on clothing and exposed skin; taking a shower and examining your body thor- oughly for ticks after each outing; and putting a tick and flea collar on pets, and routinely checking them for ticks. Early symptoms of LD usually occur within one to two weeks after a tick bite, but can be experienced as soon as three days or up to a month later. Symptoms may include fever, head- ache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue and a red rash that often looks like a bull’s- eye target. If detected early, LD can be treated successfully with antibiotics. Anyone who develops symptoms after being bitten by a tick should see their health-care provider. Fifthgeneration, 160 years in Ontario serving Ajax for the past 53 years. and an additional o retire. t some of the happiest times in their lives; y other special ntario, Letters Watching development at Bayly and Harwood has been fascinating experience for Ajax residents To the editor: Five or six years ago, my wife and l attended a public information meeting hosted by the Town of Ajax and Medallion Co. to learn about the plans for building on the corner of Bayly and Harwood. During the question period, after hearing that the plan had three phases of four years each, a gentleman asked “Do you mean to say ... that we will have 12 years of noise, dust and traffic interruptions to look forward to?” The speaker replied, “Yes, that is the only way the development can happen.” I think most of us were kind of shaken by the reality of it all. While l have lost track of the actual timeline, l must say that the past five or six years, noise, dust and all, have been some of the most fascinating years of our lives. We live on the 16th floor of one of the condo buildings facing the con- struction site and to see the former- ly grassed field grow into a huge building complex has been an edu- cation previously not experienced. Digging, shoring, concrete work, steel work, brick work, glass work, cranes up, cranes down, trucks in, trucks out, earth moved, etc. so that some day someone on the 26th floor will flick a switch and lights will go on.  Someone else on the 24th floor will turn a tap and water will fill a cup — and those are only the very basics! At the end of it all, Ajax will have a downtown unlike any other in Durham and my wife and l will have seen engineering and had an education above and beyond any- thing we ever anticipated experi- encing when we moved here 10+ years ago. Thanks to all responsible and best wishes for continued suc- cess on the project. We are enjoying every day. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the finest of this special class. June 1 was the 50th anniversary of the release of the album that ushered in the Summer of Love and an emerging counterculture. Rob Bowman, a Grammy Award-win- ning Professor of Music at York Universi- ty, recalls its release. “It was a momentous year. There was something in the air with Haight-Ashbury, Greenwich Village, and even Toronto’s Yorkville.” Bowman teaches an in-demand course on rock and popular music and considers Sgt. Pepper’s the most significant of ’67’s psychedelic harvest, which included first releases by The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix. “The Beatles were at the forefront of everything,” Bowman proclaims. “All the other bands were influenced by them and looked to them for direction.” The Concept Album “Sgt. Pepper’s is a conceptual show- piece wherein a band assumes the iden- tity of another band, plays a fake concert in which they refer to themselves as the band playing the concert, and even has an encore at the end. No other pop album is so advanced or eclectic.” Bowman notes the progression of The Beatles over a scant four-and-a-half years from their first release in 1963 – Please, Please Me – an album that took 13 hours to record with only a couple of overdubs. “The idea of constructing Sgt. Pepper’s, a record with sound effects, tape loops, and massive overdubbing, taking six months to record, shocked people.” Until then, pop groups made simple recordings. The Beatles turned light entertainment for teenagers into an art form. Their music referred to ear- lier musicians like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, but became increas- ingly experimental, no longer sounding like their predecessors. A Day in the Life For Bowman, the LP’s standout track is the finale, A Day in the Life, a mini-suite with two songs combined into one – Len- non’s slow, surreal ballad and McCart- ney’s dream portion – returning and culminating with an extended, atonal crescendo sounding like the end of the world. “It’s not a progression with a verse, cho- rus and instrumental break,” says Bow- man. “It’s a constructed composition that’s far beyond the standard aspects of the music of its time.” The song manipulated avant- garde, classical electronica and hal- lucinogenic lyrics, especially the mind-blowing refrain: ‘I’d love to turn you on.’ Bowman, who turns 61 later this month, says the students he’s encountered over his 38 years of teaching, are astonished by The Beatles, and he predicts they will be the most important artists of their era, along with Dylan, to be heard and stud- ied as Beethoven is today. “Sergeant Pepper’s has accomplished a lasting impact for 50 years,” says Bow- man. “I am quite confident the same will be true 250 years from now.” Rob Bowman Supplied photo DURHAM -- The Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. Rob Bowman notes the astonishing difference between The Beatles’ first album, Please, Please Me, and the landmark 1967 record, which “shocked people.” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 7 , 2 0 1 7 17 AP Missing the details?Titanium helps make conversation clearer. Before he became a comedy superstar, Jim Carrey was just another kid from Canada with a crazy dream: to make Johnny Carson laugh on The Tonight Show. That was back in the early ‘80s, when the stand-up scene was at its peak and the way to Carson was through The Comedy Store. On any given night, a trip to the fabled Sun- set Strip playhouse was a chance to see, live and up close, the biggest names in com- edy. Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and David Letterman all popped in to occasionally work out new material at the club, as did even more out- rageous comics such as Andrew Dice Clay, Sam Kinison and Andy Kaufman. Carrey was barely 20 when he first moved to Los Angeles. He immediately became a favourite of club owner Mitzi Shore who declared him her hottest find since Robin Williams. “Mitzi became my champion,” confirmed Carrey. Eventually he did get that Carson gig. Breakout TV and film roles followed and he was soon earning $20 million a picture. Except it wasn’t nearly that simple. There were setbacks along the way, some of them painful. It’s all in, “I’m Dying Up Here: A Sit Down About Stand-up in the Seventies”. The Showtime series premieres in Canada on CraveTV in June. “I’m Dying Up Here” looks at the stand-up comedy scene in the ‘70s, slightly before Carrey’s time. Oscar-winner Melissa Leo plays Goldie, a club owner who bears more than a passing resemblance to the Comedy Store’s Mitzi Shore. Contem- porary club comics Ari Graynor, Erik Griffin and Al Madrigal perform in the series. Some of the stories are lifted directly from Carrey’s own experiences. “That closet that Larry and Eddie live in is my closet,” said Carrey, referring to two naive, out-of-town characters on the series. “I met somebody at the Improv who said they had a room, and it turned out to be a closet. So for the first year or so I was here, I lived in that closet.” Carrey says he woke up the very first morn- ing, emerged from the closet, walked into the kitchen and there was, “a beautiful young girl making bacon with no pants on. And I went, ‘Wow.’” Another storyline shows an up and comer screwing up his “Tonight Show” appear- ance. It was a sin Carrey committed when he bragged to friends he had a booking and then had to make excuses when Tonight producers deemed his act wasn’t quite ready. (He eventually went on with Carson and killed). Carrey joined the stars and other produc- ers of the series earlier this year in Pasade- na, Calif., at The Ice House, one of the oldest comedy clubs in the United States. These days, he’s far from the fresh-faced young kid from Canada who wowed audiences as an impressionist. At 55, Carrey sports a grey beard that makes him look more hobo than hipster; more “Duck Dynasty” than “Duck Factory” (the sitcom he did for NBC in the early ‘80s). Still, there’s the same twinkle in his eye when he talks about the good old days in the clubs. “I, for a very long time, have wanted to do something about this era,” says Carrey. “I have the greatest respect and love and admiration for the people whose ministry it is to free the world from concern. And I think it’s really important to recognize it.” Carrey’s comedy baptism occurred before he hit the big time in LA. Growing up north of Toronto, he wowed crowds as a teenager at Yuk Yuk’s and to this day is quick to cred- it club owner Mark Breslin for his first big break. Already a master impressionist, Car- rey could twist his rubbery face to look like Sammy Davis, Jr., or Bruce Dern. He’d do singing impressions of both Paul McCart- ney and Stevie Wonder on “Ebony and Ivory.” He’d do all the leads, including Kath- arine Hepburn, of “On Golden Pond.” In the early ‘80s, before his move to LA, I had a front row seat as Carrey established himself as the house comic at Tickles, a comedy club in Barrie, Ont. Together with my high school pal Pat Bullock, I was part of a comedy duo at the time. Bullock & Brioux worked three or four weekends at Tickles with Carrey top of the bill. Carrey set the bar so high at such a young age it seemed pointless to us (and to both our fans at the time) to continue in the com- edy business. I was struck by a comment he made. He said that he had visited a long-term care facil- ity and was uncomfortable seeing the decline in the residents there because it reminded him of his own mortality. It occurred to me that this is likely a senti- ment shared by many people who do not work in this field and are not exposed to it on a regular basis. The level of care required by those in long-term care is significantly higher than the care required by those in retire- ment. Residents in retirement may run a wide spectrum. There are many resi- dents who are very self-sufficient. They may still drive cars. They come and go as they please and require very little assis- tance. There are some who may require minimal assistance. Perhaps they need assistance with medication administra- tion and light housekeeping or assis- tance with a shower weekly. And then there are those who are on a wait list for long-term care and require higher levels of care. Most retirement residences will have individualized options for purchas- ing various levels of care but there are limits to the care that can be provided in retirement. If you are considering long-term care as an option for a loved one whose care now exceeds your ability to manage, it is a good idea to schedule tours of the facil- ities you are considering. The applica- tion process and wait lists are managed by the Community Care Access Centers. You would need to contact them to get started. Durham Region is covered by the central east office. Their number is 905-430-3308. Be prepared as you schedule tours. Some of the residents in long-term care are living with a wide range of issues including dementia, loss of mobility, trouble feeding themselves and inconti- nence, just to name a few. It can be rath- er shocking when you first experience the level of care provided. There is nor- mally a doctor on-site and a multitude of other care staff to support these high needs residents. Although it can be shocking, I would encourage you to look beyond the first impressions and really see the compas- sion and great care that is being provid- ed by those who have committed them- selves to caring for those who are in the greatest need. Base your choices on the care and not solely on the age of the building or the esthetics of the environ- ment. Even residents who are unable to communicate or can’t remember fam- ily members are able to experience and express joy in their own way. You can see it, if you look closely enough. -- Anne Murphy has worked for more than 20 years on the operations side of the health-care industry. HOOVER, Ray Burrison - Our gentle, kind Dad has been re-united with the love of his life, Barb who left us early in March. Dad was an extraordinary man! He had just celebrated his 94th birthday and boasted he'd been collecting his pension from Shell Canada for 33 years. Always well dressed; always polite; only saw the good in people. He'd be the first to admit he was a lousy golfer; actually, he didn't excel in any sport but he knew how to play a damn good game of poker!!, and always balanced his bank accounts to the penny! Dad loved our dogs and took great joy in teasing and playing with them. We have been so fortunate to have had him in our lives. All who knew him, from years ago until now, repeat over and over how special he was and how he will be missed. There is a void in the lives of his children - Sherry (Sharlene), (Steve), Wendy, Barry (Carolyn) and his grandchildren, Darryl (Leigh), Cory, Jordan (Kristen), Claire, Gary and Stefanie. His great grandchildren Drew, Liam and Owen will have amusing memories of their Papa because of the games and jokes he played on them. We want to extend a heart felt thanks to the staff of Revera Bay Ridges Long Term Care. Their compassion and kindness helped us through this sad time. The nurses, personal support workers (they are angels!), recreation staff and administrative staff went above and beyond their duties. We will celebrate Dad's life on June 15th, 2017 their 71st wedding anniversary, at MCEACHNIE FAMILY CENTRE, 28 Old Kingston Road, Ajax (Village of Pickering) from 11a.m. - 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. REARDON, Michelle Anne - Passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2nd at her home at the age of 48. Beloved wife of Andrew. Loving mother of Graydon and Holden. Cherished daughter of Carol and Bill (1942-1997) and dear sister of Michael. She will be greatly missed by her extended family, nieces and nephews, and many friends. Michelle loved nothing more than spending time with her boys, family and friends. Be it relaxing in the Myrtle Beach sun, planning family dinners, camping and strolling along the granite shores of Killbear, or "puttering" around her home and garden. Michelle's ability to find the positive in people and in life will leave a lasting impression on all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
