GOLD SPONSORS:SILVER SPONSOR:PLATINUM SPONSORS: Samuel Taylor, 25, shot nine times while visiting a friend in Toronto Andrew Palamarchuk newsroom@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Relatives of Samuel Taylor are appealing for help in solving the shooting of the 25-year-old “gentle giant.” The Ajax man was shot nine times while visiting a friend in the Flemingdon Park area at about 10 p.m. April 13. He under- went several life-saving surgeries and con- tinues to recover. “Sam is just one of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet,” Taylor’s brother David said. “Even when he’s having bad days, there’s always a point where he’ll make it his mission to make someone smile. He’s the last person we expected this to happen to.”   Police said Taylor was working on his broken down car with a cabbie who stopped to help near Grenoble Drive and Vendome Place. After the car was fixed, Taylor walked to visit a longtime friend when two men approached him on a walk- way and opened fire. “He was targeted,” 54 Division Det. Sgt. Jim Gotell told reporters during a news conference at police headquarters Friday, May 26. “We don’t believe it was anything that he did that caused him to be targeted, and it could very well be that he was the wrong person.” The shooters fled in separate vehicles, a dark sedan and a white vehicle. “He was very, very badly injured, and he is very lucky to be alive,” Gotell said of Tay- lor. David described his brother Samuel as a “gentle giant” and a prankster. “We’re from Durham (Region). We go to church every Sunday. We’ve been living in the suburbs all our life. This is completely out of the blue. We never expected any- thing like this,” said David, noting “we have a 12 o’clock curfew even though I’m 22 and he’s 25.” The shooting, the suspects and the get- away vehicles were captured on sever- al security cameras, and police released some of the footage on Friday. “I’m urging, I’m imploring that if any- one in the Flemingdon Park or Thorncliffe Park communities has any information regarding this shooting … come forward and aid Toronto police in this investiga- tion,” David said. “What keeps all of us up at night is the fact that these men are still at large and their guns can be used again on anyone they choose.” Gotell said there is gang activity in the neighbourhood and gang activity has been involved in some of the other shootings in the area. “Unfortunately this was the fourth shooting that has happened in the last five months in this neighbourhood,” he said. On Jan. 16, a car was shot up in an underground garage in the area. On Feb. 17, an 18-year-old man was shot in the thigh and calf near Don Mills Road and Gateway Boulevard. Three peo- ple have been charged in connection with the incident. On March 13, a 15-year-old boy walking home after playing basketball was grazed by a bullet near Grenoble and Vendome. “The widespread violence is causing irreparable damage, and it’s tearing fami- lies apart,” David said. “I’m compelled to ask the citizens of Toronto to help police get these illegal firearms off the street so these shootings don’t happen anymore.” Police, family appeal for info in shooting of Ajax man Andrew Palamarchuk/Metroland TORONTO -- Shooting victim Samuel Taylor’s brothers Phillip (left), Daniel and David appealed for help in solving the shooting outside Toronto Police Headquarters on May 26. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma y 3 1 , 2 0 1 7 3 Pinside May 31, 2017 Pressrun 54,400 / 28 pages editorial Page / 6 Real estate / pullout section durham Wheels / pullout section Letters to the editor / 13 Classified / 16 905-215-0442 durhamregion.com The latest news from across durham Region, Ontario, Canada and the world all day, every day. search ‘newsdurham’ on your favourite social media channel. Mystic Drumz, a famous music show for kids, will take place at 2 and 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. “This is an amazing show. It’s not just any run-of-the mill show,” Harnish said. “It’s a not-to-be-missed entertainment show for the kids specifically.” For the main event, nine ribbers will be serving up barbecue all weekend, and for those who don’t eat ribs, there’s a large variety of other food to choose form, from Chinese fare to Halal. “We have more food choices than ever before,” said Harnish. The annual event is presented by the Ajax and Pickering Rotary clubs, and all of the money raised from the event will go to local charities and international proj- ects. “I’m looking forward to another won- derful event,” said Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. “The Ajax-Pickering Rotarians do a fantastic job in the community and I think this is kind of the hallmark event for them and one of their biggest fundraisers local- ly, so I really encourage people to come out, participate, enjoy and have fun.” As always, Ribfest is an environmen- tally-friendly event. “All vendors are required to use recy- clable food containers, even the forks and knives,” said Harnish. And the Canadian Caribbean Cultural Association of Durham does a great job keeping the park clean, he added. The midway, kids rides, and ferris wheel are also returning this year. Attendance averages between 70,000 and 90,000 per year Entertainment includes a variety of musical acts, including Two for the Show and Eagles cover band Hotel California. There will also be a tribute to the late Pickering Coun. Rick Johnson. He and his band, Rick Johnson and the County Jam- boree played the event each year. “He was a great man who gave his everything to the community,” said the Ribfest website. “We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Rick Johnson for step- ping up and helping to make Pickering Ribfest a reality in 2008.” The event will be pet-free and non- smoking. Donations to the local food bank will be accepted. Admission, enter- tainment and parking are free. Ribfest will take place at Esplanade Park, One The Esplanade, Pickering, on Friday, June 2 from noon to 11 p.m., Sat- urday June 3 from noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday, June 4 from noon to 8 p.m. Plenty of family-friendly entertainmentand, of course, ribs in Pickering this weekend PLENTY from page 1 Metroland file photo PICKERING -- Steve Sideris of Boss Hogg brushes some prize-winning sauce on the barbecued ribs he cooked at the annual Pickering Ribfest on Sunday June 7, 2015. In my teens, I went both to a psycholo- gist and psychiatrist, was diagnosed with clinical depression and prescribed medi- cation. I’ve known the dark places of the soul and lived to tell about it. When the doctor was writing his prescription for me, I remember thinking that this isn’t the way life should be and there was no way I’d be staying on these meds for any extended period of time. I’d take them, but not for long. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was turning a corner just by what I believed and had the nerve to say out loud. I laugh when people get upset with me for sometimes describing myself as a communicator of truth. Listen, I’ve had to communicate to myself more than any audience that I will ever have, because audiences come and go, but I have to live with myself day in and day out. I’ve had to tell myself the truth just to remain alive, and truth is simply facts that don’t change — truth like, I am loved. I am not alone. If we aren’t telling ourselves the truth, we’re listening to a narrative that will eventually destroy us from the inside out. On an episode of Little House on the Prairie, Laura gave a sobering talk to her niece Jenny after she attempted to drown herself in a pond. “God put you on this earth for a reason, just like all of us, and you should get down on your knees and thank the Lord for what you’ve got.” “Well, you don’t know the pain I’m in,” one might say. That’s not the point; do you want to stay there? If a robber breaks into your house at night, one of the first things you’ll do is call 911 or defend yourself. Why? Because an intruder has no right to be on your property, let alone attempt to steal, kill or destroy you or your things. Thoughts can be like that intruder. It’s not you. It’s something that wants to kill you, and if you agree with it, it will. You better speak up and call for help like you would with an intruder, because it’s coming for your life — and if you’ve already lost someone or something, don’t let it take you, too. — Renae Jarrett lives in Durham, loves Canada and is passionate about truth in current affairs. Send us a letter to the editor, max. 200 words. newsroom@durhamregion.com renae Jarrett Guest columnist letter to tHe editor Is it any wonder traditional music classes are declining, asks reader To the editor: Re: ‘Durham schools get creative with hip hop, hand drumming as traditional music classes decline’, news, May 22 If the Durham District School Board is purchasing African and indigenous drums and “training” teachers in their use, it is hard- ly surprising that “traditional music classes” are declining.   Is this yet another attempt at social engi- neering intended to favour “diversity” and destroy the underpinnings of Western cul- ture? I see that Harvard recently accepted a rap album as a senior thesis in the Eng- lish department. Obviously, there is a con- trived movement in that direction. As for me, I much prefer Beethoven and Mozart to per- cussion-only, and I fail to see how this delib- erate regression will benefit society.   Jeff Goodall Oshawa While we think fast-tracking a new Highway 401 interchange at Waverley Road in Clarington should be about the safety of the motorists who use it, it’s good to see that most levels of government, along with the private sector, are making funds avail- able to push ahead with this needed proj- ect. Of late, the Region of Durham has passed a motion to ante up $2.5 million toward the Waverley Road interchange project. That will be matched by $2.5 mil- lion from Clarington as well as $2.5 million by the private sector in the form of devel- oper SmartREIT, which proposes to build a 25,362 sq. m (273,000 sq. ft) outlet mall on the site of the former Rona outlet on the northeast corner of Waverley Road. The provincial government is fund- ing $11.7 million toward the $19.2 million project. If the interchange construction relied solely on funding from the province, it would be at least 14 years in the future. That, to motorists, as well as to the Munic- ipality of Clarington and the developer, is far too long when safety — not to mention a significant number of new jobs — depends on the construction of a new interchange. As it currently stands now, the inter- change — especially the eastbound off- ramp — is unsafe considering today’s traf- fic volumes. On far too many occasions, the lineup to get off the 401 is too long, with no traffic lights to serve as a release valve at the top of the ramp. Many times, vehicles waiting to exit the highway extend out on to a live lane of traffic, making it a perilous situation. But, if commerce takes the lead in driving this construction project to frui- tion, we’re all for it. For his part, Claring- ton Mayor Adrian Foster has been active in ensuring the project is a priority — not only with the Region, but also the prov- ince. He correctly notes job gains, and the taxes from the opening of employment lands that the interchange would serve would be beneficial to all involved. “There’s a net positive benefit to the public purse” by way of taxes and develop- ment charges, he said. While some regional councillors were against putting money into capital proj- ects, that ship has sailed, with the region already contributing $27 million toward interchanges at Salem (Ajax), Lakeridge (Whitby) and Stevenson roads (Oshawa). The Stevenson Road interchange, in par- ticular, helped open up employment lands in that area of Oshawa. Collaboration among levels of govern- ment and the private sector is making a badly-needed construction project a real- ity. The sooner it gets underway, the better. Ajax man charged with impaired driving after cops employ 'rolling block' to stop car DURHAM — Police boxed in a car being driven by a suspected impaired driver on Highway 401 east in Northum- berland early Sunday. An Ajax man has been charged follow- ing the incident, at about 3 a.m. on May 21 in Northumberland County. OPP were on the lookout for a Nissan 350Z after being informed a possibly impaired driv- er had been seen travelling east on the highway from Durham. As the car approached the exit at County Road 45, it struck a guardrail, police said. Two OPP cruisers executed a rolling block to get the car to stop. The driver was taken to a police sta- tion where a drug recognition officer determined he was impaired, possibly by multiple substances, police said. Morcos Fayez Habib, 28, of Ajax is charged with driving while impaired by a drug and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. The event was held at the Pickering Public Library May 27. DURHAM — The provincial labour ministry has been called in after a worker was seriously hurt Wednesday morning in north Pickering. One person was taken to a trauma cen- tre with serious injuries following the incident, at a nursery near Salem Road and Hwy. 7 in Brougham, Durham police have confirmed. Police could not confirm the nature of the injuries involved, but a report from the scene indicated a per- son was injured while operating a lawn mower. Police said the Ministry of Labour has been contacted and will investigate the incident. Worker sustains seriousinjuries in workplace incident at north Pickering nursery Keith Gilligan KGilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — It's never too late to start quitting. That's the message the Durham Region Health Department has for smokers on Wednesday, May 31, which is World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). “Quitting smoking can be hard, but there are many options available to help with your quit efforts,” said Shelley Simic, a public health nurse with the health department. “It’s never too late to quit. With the right support, you can be success- ful and every quit attempt gets you closer to becoming a non-smoker.”  WNTD was created by the World Health Organization in 1987 to recognize the harmful effects of tobacco. Held annually, the day highlights the worldwide tobacco epidemic and emphasizes the important work still to be done in tobacco control. Research shows tobacco is responsible for more than 37,000 deaths every year in Canada. Ontario accounts for 13,000 of those deaths and that's equal to 36 people a day. According to a 2015 health depart- ment survey, 14 per cent of Durham Region residents 18 and older, which rep- resents 65,000 people, are smokers. More than half of these people are considering quitting or planning on quitting within the next six months. Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region medi- cal officer of health, said, “Tobacco use is one of the leading causes of preventable death and disease in Ontario and quit- ting smoking is one of the best steps a per- son can take to improve their health. We encourage smokers to talk to their health care provider about strategies that can help with quitting smoking.” There are many noted health benefits to quitting smoking. Within 20 minutes of your last cigarette, blood pressure decreas- es and pulse returns to normal. After four days, lung capacity increases and after one year the risk of a heart attack is cut in half. Counselling and the use of nicotine replacement therapy can help to double the chances of success. Any smoker want- ing to quit should contact their health care provider, family health team or a commu- nity health centre for additional informa- tion and support. For more information on quitting smok- ing, tobacco use prevention and protect- ing people from exposure to second-hand smoke, call Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841 -2729, or visit durham.ca/tobacco.  Durham wants smokers to butt out 1099 Kingston Rd #5b Pickering 905-831-6388 •(pianogroup.ca) Piano andGuitarLessons Me t r o l a n D Du r h a M real estate Press Run 162,050 May 31, 2017 *Independently Owned & Operated WELCOME TO EMERALDPOINT!!! ColdwellBanker RMR sponsored the building of a large gazeboat the Simcoe Street North site. The gazebo will be builtin the next few months. In the meantime, the folks atWe Grow Food, with the help of volunteers, have beenmadly working at getting the site ready for its final use.And that would be to provide fresh fruits and veggies on a regular basis for those in need. On May 6 the garden was cleaned upin preparation for the coming growing season. On May 13 raspberrybushes were planted donated by Buckingham Meats. Signs indicatingthe progress of the plants were painted and made ready for use. OnMay 24 students from Glen Street Public School helped with moreplanting. If you haven’t had a chance, you should get out and see thiswonderful project. The whole idea behind this, and others put up byWe Grow Food, is to make the neighbourhood more self-reliant. Andby getting involved, the community has more of an investment in the project. When the gazebo gets built, it will put the finishing toucheson this outstanding effort. Alexandra’s Bounty is on the west side ofSimcoe Street North just a stone’s throw from the entrance to theparking garage for Lakeridge Health. Mortgages of less than three per cent can be obtained. Buyers consider these low rates such a bar- gain that they flock in droves to purchase homes — thus driving prices up even high- er in bidding wars. Houses “sold over list prices” are now common. For some reason, the Bank of Canada stubbornly refuses to raise interest rates, even though rates in the U.S. have been raised twice in the last year or so. When mortgages carried interest rates of five, six or even seven per cent, as they did a few years ago, it was normal for a buyer to offer less than the asking price. Even though mortgage rates were higher then, much lower house prices more than made up for it. Surely it is time for the Bank of Canada not to continue being so obstinate. If the Bank of Canada did decide to raise rates, a plan could be worked out to protect home buyers from the new rates when renewing their mortgages. George Heron Ajax Reader wants to see equality for all regardless of colour, race or religion at DDSB To the editor: Re: ‘Resident surprised DDSB approved Muslim educators network group’, letters, May 15. Letter writer Bill Rattan said exactly what I wanted to and I was so happy to see someone else speaking out. Are we becoming so intimidated, afraid of offending or not being politically correct that we are going overboard with catering to these groups? Religion has been taken completely out of the public school board, so then why is there a Muslim Educator’s Network Group? And please readers, don’t consider my comments as being racist, which when I or other people express our opinions on these issues, we get labelled. You need to wake up to the reality of what is happening. I want equality for all regardless of colour, race or religion. I don’t want special treatment for certain groups. Marjorie Seymour Pickering Canada has a duty to repair the damages inflicted upon aboriginal children To the editor: As the May flowers begin to bloom, students in Durham regional schools have begun to notice a new addition to their daily announcements. On top of the national anthem, daily announcements, and in Catholic schools the morning prayer, schools have now included a line that “respectfully acknowledges that we are on the traditional lands of the Missis- saugas of Scugog Island.” This is a nice gesture that reminds stu- dents of Canada’s indigenous roots. Many students are unaware that we in Durham Region reside on this sacred aboriginal land, so this small gesture does help edu- cate students. Nonetheless, they are also misinformed about the torment that aboriginal children endured at the hands of the Canadian gov- ernment less than a century ago, and this is an issue that has to be addressed. Despite this line being a nice addition to the announcements, we have to make sure that this token gesture is not the extent of what is being done. In order to make students more knowledgeable about the impact on Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples, there has to be more awareness about the events that occurred as well as how the government is repairing the damage. THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING US AS YOUR FAVOURITEDEALERIN 2016! Heating & THANK YOU 2016 Spray used after woman found without vital signs in Oshawa apartment building Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA — A victim of a suspect- ed fentanyl overdose was successfully revived by an officer using an antidote last week in Oshawa, police say. The cop administered Narcan spray after finding the woman without vital signs in an apartment building on Rich- mond Street around 7:45 p.m. Friday, May 26, Durham police said. Police administered CPR and the 23-year-old was revived, then transported to hospi- tal. It is believed the woman overdosed on fentanyl, Const. George Tudos said. The increasing presence of powerful opiates, including fentanyl and carfent- anil, has prompted police to adopt mea- sures to deal with overdos- es. Narcan, which helps reverse the effects of opi- ates, is carried by police supervisors, Tudos said. “We’re being exposed to a lot more calls for over- doses involving fen- tanyl,” he said. Police have also stepped up a public awareness cam- paign that warns drug users about the possibility street drugs may contain potentially deadly substances like fen- tanyl. “We’re trying to educate the public as much as we can,” Tudos said.
