Ron Pietroniro / Metroland TORONTO — Pickering resident William ‘Bud’ Perry won the May 10 Lotto 6/49 draw and was officially given his cheque on May 17 at a ceremony in Toronto. He took home $30 million and plans to share it with his family. His son Sean joined him for the ceremony as the two joked with the media after Perry received the cheque. Millions of reasons to rejoice Pickering’s William ‘Bud’ Perry wins $30 million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot Kristen Calis KCalis@durhamregion.com TORONTO — Pickering’s newest multimil- lionaire couldn’t believe it when he checked his LOTTO 6/49 numbers online after the May 10 draw and saw his numbers matched. “Of course nobody believes it the first time you look at it,” said William ‘Bud’ Perry, 77. So Perry watched a hummingbird eat its breakfast from his window, and thought about what he had just seen. Still in disbelieve, he phoned a friend to share the news. “First time, he hung up on me,” Perry laughed. When his friend called him back, he also checked the numbers, and they headed to the store to be sure of the windfall. “The retailer could hardly catch her breath,” Perry said. “She was so happy for me and very excited. When I finally spoke with OLG on the phone, they asked me how I was feeling and I teased, ‘I’m fine, thanks. I’m rich.’” Perry purchased his ticket at Whites Kitch- en Food Fair on Bayly Street in Pickering. I always played for the dream,” he said. “It’s going to take me a little time to really wrap my head around all that has just happened.” Perry’s a retired crane operator who has helped build everything from skyscrap- ers to highways. He’s lived in his Pickering home since 1982. “I’ve actually retired a couple of times,” he said. “I got bored after my first retire- ment at age 62 so took a job as a crane operator at a diamond mine in the North- west Territories. That lasted six years until I finally called it quits for good. This lottery win will definitely keep me busy.” Perry enjoys golf and would love to take his game to the best courses in every prov- ince and territory in Canada. An inventor, he’d also like to develop some inventions that have long been on his mind, and see them come to fruition. But mostly, family is everything to Perry and he’s most excit- ed to share the wealth with them. “The children are going to get it,” he said. “I don’t need it.” Perry has experienced highs and low in life, which included some time on welfare in the 1980s. “He’s always been a good provider” even during those difficult times, said his son, Sean Perry. But Perry wants to give back to those who have helped him in the past, and share his wealth with other people he cares about, as well as some causes that help children and animals. “I cashed in today,” he said. “I’m going to help a lot of people before I cash out.” However, he won’t share his wealth with just anybody. “No one will get it that doesn’t deserve it,” Perry said. ‘I CASHED’ from page 1 ‘I cashed in today. My Dad, for some time, was very big into tracing the origins of our families. It’s fascinating what pops up. The thing is, though, any way you slice it, it‘s a bit of a Pandora’s Box. It’s like poking your nose into anyone’s life … you just never really know what you’re going to find. We all like to think we share DNA with greatness, but what if things swing the other way? What if some of the branches of your family tree bear weird or even rotten fruit? I’ve often wondered, for instance, how people handle the knowledge, once unearthed, that they are related to the notorious. Hitler had no children, but he must’ve had some extended family. Do you think his great niece brings that up at cocktail parties? Or while speed dating? “I love classical music, long walks in the park, I adore Italian food and, oh, yeah … my great uncle was responsible for the worst con- flagration the planet has ever known. More hummus?” I get a kick out of pondering stuff like that. There have to be people wandering around out there with very real ties to the infamous. And would that knowledge help them or hin- der them? “OK, so, you’re auditioning for the role of the assassin … your name?” “Ron Wilkes Booth”, or “Well, your papers are all in order … good luck with the new day- care centre Mrs. Mengele.” And do you suppose Brie Harvey Oswald has a hard time getting dates? What about the heirs of Gavrilo Princip? Is this schoolyard conversation so difficult to imagine? “Guess what? My Great Granddad was in the First World War.” “So? My Great Granddad started the First World War.” Who wouldn’t want to play that trump card? I’m actually surprised, in this day and age, that genealogy and ancestry are not hot- ter topics with people. Facebook profiles, for instance, are awash with efforts at one-up- manship. “Our son graduating! First in his class!”; “Bob’s brand new Cadillac!”; “Our 50th Anniversary! In St. Kitts!” If people only took the time to find out who they were relat- ed to, who knows what we might see on social media? “Uncle Vlad impaling some locals! Please Share!”; “Great-Grandma sitting on Cous- in Genghis’ lap after a hard day of pillaging”; “Uncle Joe Stalin clowning in the rec room. Leningrad 1947!” I like to think that all of us do, in fact, have the seeds of greatness within us. I guess some people are just better at watering them than others. Ancestry is an interesting thing neil crone Enter Laughing Durham regional police deal with a lot of unpleasant situations on a daily basis, so when one of their leaders says an issue is troubling, you’d better believe it’s serious. At a May 10 mental health forum hosted by the University of Ontario Institute of Tech- nology, Durham Region Police Service Insp. Bruce Townley reported the suicide rate in Durham Region is increasing. As of the begin- ning of May, there had been 24 confirmed suicides in Durham, an increase of 43 per cent over last year. “It’s all over the map, from young people to seniors and everything in between,” Townley said. He noted a suicide had occurred just hours before the conference — at about 7 p.m. on May 9, a 41-year-old woman was hit by a train on the CN tracks near Park Road and Bloor Street in Oshawa. “One person’s pain ends, and a lot of other people’s pain is just beginning,” he said. Townley said the numbers are going in the wrong direction and who could argue the point? Any time someone dies by suicide, its impact is felt far and wide. Durham police are attempting to reverse the suicide rate by getting specially trained mental health nurses back into police cruis- ers. We say “back” into cruisers because until recently, Durham police partnered with Dur- ham Mental Health Services on mobile crisis intervention teams (MCIT), which consisted of a police officer and a nurse. However, Townley says a “very fulsome” review by an external consultant led to that partnership ending in the fall of 2016. Durham police are now working on a new partnership with Lakeridge Health Oshawa, with plans to have an “elite team” of special- ly trained nurses and police officers working together in the coming weeks. This is welcome news and is a natural fit, as Lakeridge already has a crisis intervention team in the hospital and can now extend that role into the community. The need is obviously there to justify this partnership. So far in 2017, Durham police have fielded more than 1,000 calls related to suicide attempts, an increase of 14 per cent over last year. In 2016, Durham police responded to about 90,000 calls for service. Suicide is never the answer. That’s not to downplay the suffering of those contemplat- ing this final act, but once someone dies by suicide, so much more suffering results. We need to end the suffering and help those who need it. This partnership between the Dur- ham police and Lakeridge Health is a step in the right direction. For help in Durham Region, contact Dis- tress Centre Durham at 905-430-2522, Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868, or the Dur- ham Mental Health Services Crisis Line at 905-666-0483. Police, Lakeridge Health respond to alarming rates of Durham suicides lETTER To THE EDIToR Resident frustrated when filing reports to police To the editor: ‘Durham cop ‘turned away’ complainants at station, disciplinary tribunal hears’, news, May 4 I read this article with great interest. Over many years I have tried to get the police sta- tion at Highway 2 and Brock Road to make reports on incidents that had occurred in our neighbourhood. It has been frustrating. You would think that having incidents reported in the area would add to the statistical base that police refer to when requesting more funding.  I was glad to read that someone has raised the refusal to file reports to the foreground. I was always left with the impression that I was bothering the front desk. All I wanted to do was have the incident recorded. I did not want any direct followup unless the police deemed it was required. Win Fo l l o w u s o n T w i t t e r @ n e w s d u r h a m Ontario’s debt burden is false news To the editor: Re: ‘Ontario one correction away from debt crisis’, editorial, May 3 The constant media iteration of budget deficits and debt burden is a prime example of ‘false news.’ The reason it is so wide- ly believed is that there is such a wealth of ignorance regarding our monetary system. England’s Parliament has debat- ed and the Bank of England con- firmed that money is merely a bookkeeping exercise and not an intrinsic commodity, a bookkeep- ing exercise governed (or not) by accounting laws. Those laws, in turn, are created by the law makers we elect. To put the ‘debt problem’ into perspective, those of us who have a mortgaged residence have a debt burden. Likewise, those of us who live in cities, provinces and coun- tries have a debt burden. If we were to sell our residences, we could discharge our debt bur- den. Likewise, if we were to sell out roads, sidewalks, sewage plants, national parks, public buildings and water works we could easily pay off our public debt burden. Ed Goertzen Oshawa Residents encourage all households to fly Canadian flags this year To the editor: As three long-term and avid citizens of Oshawa, we here- by wholeheartedly encourage all homeowners and apartment dwellers to display a Canadian flag somewhere on their property this summer. That will surely sig- nify our country’s pride in help- ing to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Let’s all get behind this sim- ple patriotic gesture and show our neighbours that a little goes a long way. Big or small, let’s fly them all! Maurice Chartrand, Darlene Costante, and Ruby Ewing Oshawa Resident surprised DDSB approved Muslim educators network group To the editor: Re: ‘New Durham Muslim Edu- cators Network aims to get ahead of the curve’, news, durhamregion. com   As a resident of Durham Region for the past 19 years, and with two kids through the school system from junior to high school in the region, I am very much surprised that the Durham board of educa- tion approved this network plan by the Muslim educators. Did they not ask about the other kids (different religion) that are enrolled in all the schools in the region? As educators in the current school system, are they not aware and to see first-hand the concerns other kids from other religious backgrounds also go through? Why only a Muslim Educators Network? Durham is not changing. Durham has changed, but it includes every- one and diversity has always been present. Do not try to make it an issue. What these two individuals should be doing and what would work is to partner and collaborate with other educators (non-Mus- lims) in the region and to create a network/database that includes all. Bill Rattan Whitby Disgraceful behaviour cost the public a bundle To the editor: Re: ‘Fired Durham justice of the peace wants public to pay bill’, news, May 10 This is one of the inevitable con- sequences of our predatory and largely unaccountable “human rights industry” — the utterly unre- alistic expectations and sense of entitlement it can bestow upon its politically-correct beneficiaries. Errol Massiah was previous- ly a mediator and adjudicator who worked with the Police Com- plaints Commission and the Ontar- io Human Rights Commission (1), and one may reasonably wonder if he was promoted up and out of the way for similar misbehaviour while in those positions. After all, he claims that inappropriate behav- iour is part of his “management style” ... As you reported on May 1, 2015: “Massiah had been on leave since August 2010, but was still collecting his $122,600 annual salary.” What with that and his legal bills, this dis- graceful behaviour could end up costing the public well over $1 mil- lion. Are we idiots or what? Jeff Goodall, Oshawa Letters to the editor du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma y 1 8 , 2 0 1 7 10 AP Partnership pairs nurses with officers to aid in crisis intervention calls Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Police in Durham say the number of local suicides is on the rise, calling the numbers “troubling.” As of the beginning of May, there had been 24 confirmed suicides in Durham, an increase of 43 per cent over last year. “The numbers are going in the wrong direction,” said Durham Region Police Service Insp. Bruce Townley, who gave a stark summary of the statistics at a May 10 metal health forum hosted by the Uni- versity of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). To drive the point home, Town- ley told the audience that a suicide had occurred just hours before the conference — at about 7 p.m. on May 9, a 41-year- old woman was hit by a train on the CN tracks near Park Road and Bloor Street in Oshawa. “One person’s pain ends, and a lot of other people’s pain is just beginning,” Townley noted. So far in 2017, Durham police have fielded more than 1,000 calls related to suicide attempts, an increase of 14 per cent over last year. In 2016, Durham police responded to about 90,000 calls for service. About 2,700 of those involved a direct threat of suicide — up 60 per cent from 2010. “It’s all over the map, from young peo- ple to seniors and everything in between,” Townley said. More than 60 per cent of people who die by suicide in Durham have received treatment or support from a community agency or resource. Experts say there needs to be better co- ordination of services and a way of check- ing in on people who are at risk for sui- cide. “That’s one of the areas we’re failing in,” Townley noted. “It’s the followup piece. Is there a support system for them?” One way Durham police are hoping to reverse the trend is by getting specially trained mental health nurses back into its cruisers. Until recently, Durham police part- nered with Durham Mental Health Ser- vices on mobile crisis intervention teams (MCIT), which consisted of a police offi- cer and a nurse. However, Townley says a “very ful- some” review led by an external consul- tant, led to that partnership ending in the fall of 2016. Durham police are now working on a new partnership with Lakeridge Health Oshawa, with plans to have an “elite team” of specially trained nurses and police officers working together in the coming weeks. “This is a natural fit on many fronts,” says Paul McGary, director of men- tal health and addictions at Lakeridge Health. Lakeridge already has a crisis interven- tion team in the hospital — McGary says the new partnership extends that role into the community. The teams will function similarly to the previous MCITs, with pairs of nurses and police officers responding to 911 calls with a mental health element. The teams will be secondary respond- ers, arriving at calls after police have deemed that it’s safe. McGary says he is “optimistic” that the initiative will have an impact on Durham’s rising suicide rate. Lakeridge Health plans to hire two new nurses to be paired with police, as opposed to reallocating existing staff. McGary says the project is in an “active planning process,” but couldn’t say when the teams might be up and running. Wendy Stanyon, an associate profes- sor with the faculty of health sciences at UOIT, says average Durham residents also have a big role to play in addressing the problem, by connecting with loved ones, co-workers and neighbours. She makes an analogy between CPR and suicide intervention skills, saying most people wouldn’t hesitate to use a defibrillator at an ice rink or try CPR if someone collapsed — but they might hes- itate to talk to someone about suicide. “The tendency is for people to think ‘it’s not my business’,” she says. “I think everybody needs to be educated about how their words can save lives.” Townley, Stanyon and McGary were among a who’s who of mental health experts that spoke at the UOIT Futures Forum 2017, including keynote speaker Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire. The annual event brings together pro- fessors, students and community leaders to discuss public policy issues, with a dif- ferent theme each year. This year’s forum focused on men- tal health and included discussions on the mental health of vulnerable popula- tions, health technology and the connec- tion between physical activity and healthy communities. Kids and adults alike have fun learning about science Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com OSHAWA — When seven- year-old Rylyn Webb was given the chance to inflate a real pig’s lung, she wasn’t sure if she should be intrigued or grossed out. “It’s from a real pig?” she asked. “That’s kind of gross…but it’s cool.” As she pumped air into the lung, watching it slowly expand, UOIT student Lidya Salim explained that human lungs work the same way — and are about the same size. “Wow, it’s getting huge!” Rylyn exclaimed, as her parents snapped photos. The Whitby girl and her family were among hundreds of people who visited the Durham College and UOIT campus in Oshawa on Saturday, to check out the 10th annual Science Rendezvous. The free event, which takes place in cities across the coun- try, is Canada’s biggest science celebration and has been grow- ing in popularity since it started in 2008. The goal is to make science accessible and fun for people of all ages with a day of demonstra- tions, activities and experiments. “We want to make people comfortable with science,” said Annette Tavares, a biology lec- turer at UOIT and one of the organizers of the local event co- hosted by the university and Durham College. “Science real- ly is part of everyday life — like when you’re baking, for example — and it can be a lot of fun.” Tavares says the local Science Rendezvous usually draws about 700 people, and involves 200 vol- unteers. On May 13, there were more than 70 hands-on activities and experiments to check out. Participants hunted for dino- saur fossils, launched pop bot- tle rockets, marveled at a dis- sected sheep’s heart, dug their hands into moon sand, inflated balloons using lemon juice and played with robots. There were demonstra- tions of everything from levita- tion to DNA extraction, and the chance for teens to compete in an “Amazing Race” style science challenge. At mini workshops, science enthusiasts were able to extract their own DNA and wear it home on a necklace, or don a lab coat to explore bacterial cultures. “We really want to get people interested at a young age and pique their curiosity, ” Tavares said. Aiden McCallum, 5, was def- initely interested as he wiggled his hands in a bowl of neon green Oobleck — an intriguing slimy substance with qualities of both a liquid and solid. “This is my favourite thing all day,” he said. This year’s Science Rendez- vous included 300 events across 30 Canadian cities. GOLD SPONSORS:SILVER SPONSOR:PLATINUM SPONSORS: Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Police have issued a warning after confirmation that an over- dose in Durham Region was caused by the potentially deadly drug carfentanil. The victim survived the overdose, which occurred in February. Drugs seized at the scene were submitted for analysis, said Durham police Const. George Tudos. “Health Canada confirmed it was carfentanil,” Tudos said Monday. Carfentanil is a powerful synthetic opioid typically used as a tranquillizer for large animals. It’s 100 times more potent than fentanyl, another opioid that has been identified as the cause of overdoses and deaths across Canada. Police are now warning people to be cautious of street drugs, which may contain fentanyl or carfentanil and can be lethal to unsuspect- ing users. “Any time you ingest any type of illegal drug, you don’t know for sure what’s in it,” Tudos said. Help should immediately be sought anyone who’s suspected of suffering from an overdose, Tudos said. Anyone with information about dis- tribution of carfentanil or fentanyl is asked to call police. Now that Mother Nature is finally relenting, they’re starting to show up.  The big question is how far south they were held up, and how long it will take all those fluttering wings to carry those small bodies to Durham backyards, parks and nature areas. And will they all come at once, a tsunami of feathers and song, or will migration stretch on into June? Lots of birders and photographers plan their holidays around May migra- tion, and this year may miss peak waves of the colourful birds they were hoping to view. The bottom line is you haven’t missed it. And right now is the ideal time to grab binoculars and head outdoors, where any tree or shrub, wetland or meadow could be harbouring beautiful birds just back from South America. I probably get more calls from read- ers excited about seeing rose-breasted grosbeaks in their yards than anything. What’s not to love about big black-and- white birds with a raspberry-coloured bib? Dave Bell called to chat about birds he’d seen, and as I reached for the phone, I spotted six male grosbeaks at my feeder. Just about the same time as gros- beaks, indigo buntings return, thrilling anyone lucky enough to catch sight of one in the sun, which turns their plum- age a vivid cobalt blue. And most stunning of all are scar- let tanagers, just about everyone’s most coveted bird. To me, spring truly "arrives" when I spot my first tanager singing its hoarse-robin song from atop a lime-green, leafing-out tree in Thick- son’s Woods.  I had reports from readers seeing ruby-throated hummingbirds more than a week ago, and watched one visit every blossom in my cherry tree. So it’s time to fill your nectar feed- ers, if you haven’t yet. (Mix one part white sugar to four parts water; bring to a boil to sterilize.) More hummers will be migrating through this week, as the weather warms. And orioles! Those bright orange birds love nectar, too, and cheer up any grey day. Arriving with them, throughout the urban forest and woodlots everywhere, come the wood-warblers, tiny bejeweled birds that flit about the branches, feed- ing on midges. Bay-breasted, black-and- white, black-throated blue, black-throat- ed green. Golden-winged, blue-winged, yellowthroat, yellow-rumped. Chestnut- sided, redstart, cerulean ... their names say it all. It’s the stench of the Toronto Raptors’ attitude in the semifinals. Last year, I wrote about We the North — how something great was emerging and many of us had not even been paying attention. But what a difference a year makes; sadly in this case it’s not for the bet- ter. There are more qualified, hard core fans that know about the Raptors’ stats. But in the last stretch my ears started to hear a reoccurring sound coming from this team — indifference mixed with excuses. Now if I could hear it, how much more than, those who came faithfully to Jurassic Park? This is speaking to me in my own life. I may have a rea- son why I did or didn’t do some- thing, but I have no excuse. According to Webster’s Dictionary the word excuse means: “to try to remove blame from” and if I do this I’m inadvertently saying that the blame belongs to something or someone else. Toward the end, the Raptors even lik- ened themselves to being like bad chil- dren who know what they’re supposed to do, but don’t do it. Then Coach Casey had the gall to say, it wasn’t so bad. Stop right there! Attitude is everything. It’s the differ- ence maker. “The currents that deter- mine our dreams and shape our lives, flow from the attitudes we nurture each day.” Anonymous. Some attitudes will never produce a win. The Raptors played as though they no longer felt the weight and glory of their nation. They are still the only representa- tion of a Canadian team in the NBA. But clearly this wasn’t enough. I wasn’t a bit surprised to hear Kyle Lowry opt out of his contract. Was he even here this season? I wonder if players lost money each time they lost a game if that would change their attitude? If you don’t have anything to lose, why give everything? In their case, they get paid either way. I wonder how many times I’ve said to myself I’m OK as if that’s suffi- cient. We can tell ourselves what we want to, but there’s an odour com- ing from our lives. We may not smell it because we’re with it all the time. We’re nose blind. But there’s an attitude that creates a ceiling for us and another one that makes any ceiling become our floor. I’m determined to have the latter.   — Renae Jarrett lives in Durham, loves Canada and is passionate about truth in current affairs. Why Research Hearing Loss? Deepinsideourearsareseveralthousandmicroscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions,or the process of aging itself. Just like a piano with damaged keys, an ear with damaged hair cells will make things sound muffled and distorted. Leaking basement?invest in your Foundation with over 35yrsexperience www.noleaks.ca905-686-6880 waterproofing 10year warranty! free estimates! professional and courteous service we will solvethe problem! Crawford & Sons: Fixing Basement Leaks Right the First Time Water can damage anything it comes across, including carpets, flooring, furniture, drywall, electronics and more. At the first sign of water entering your basement, it’s time to callthe experts. Trying to repair it yourself can lead to delays andmore damage being done. You want to work with professionals who will repair your basement leak right the first time. The first step in repairing a basement leak is pinpointing where the problem is. Every home is unique, and there isn’ta one-size-fits all solution for every type of leak. You needsomeone with experience who can determine the source of the water and come up with the right solution. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing inAjax has been in the business for over 35 years and has beenin over 15,000 homes in Durham Region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine and I’m still learning,” he says. Once the source of the leak has been determined, Gordon willdevise a solution that will be both successful and cost efficient. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of thehouse and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’sabsolutely necessary.” Sometimes, the best solution is to stop the leak from inside. This will also avoid having to dig up any landscaping. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board is a very good solution,” says Gordon. “It’s extremely efficientand cost effective by saving costly damages to exteriorlandscaping.” It’s important to fix the leak as soon as you spot it, as the longer you leave it, the more damage it will do. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with theproblem until it escalates into a bigger one. You have toget in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. For more information, call Gordon at (905) 686-6880. She approached the Town of Ajax and was advised to start her own — and Young Singers was born. The regional choral program for young people six to 20 is 25 years old and the vocalists take the stage on May 27 to celebrate. Described by one of her charges as tough but fair, Murphy always aims for excellence, to get the best out of each singer and composition. “It’s always, ‘how can we make it bet- ter’,” the founder and artistic director says. “No matter how good you are, you can be better. It’s having the right atti- tude. I always say, ‘enthusiasm is con- tagious. Show me some enthusiasm’.” Olivia McKay of Ajax was early for a rehearsal one night and said she always sings for her piano teacher, who recommended Young Singers. “I wanted to challenge my skills,” she says. A Grade 9 student in the perform- ing arts program at O’Neill CVI in Oshawa, she says being in the Singers is like being in “one big family." “There’s always someone there who can help you and everybody’s really close,” Olivia says. Fellow Ajacian and O’Neill student Daniel Kurgic says Murphy is “always there for us.” He jokes that he joined to “steal my brother’s spotlight” — but discovered he has a love of sing- ing. “Some of these kids will go on to sing for the rest of their lives, many of them will,” Murphy says. And when they do leave Young Sing- ers, they stay in touch. Murphy says she hears from many alumni, some of whom have gone on to further studies and careers in music. And Murphy stresses that while she is the face of Young Singers, she has a lot of help. The leadership team includes accompanist Lois Craig, co- directors Blythe George and Kelly King and, on the administrative side, Lori LaFrance and Sita Jonkers.   What began as a recreation program through the Town of Ajax has expand- ed into a regionwide group. Many of the more than 900 young people who have been Young Singers are from Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. But youths from other parts of Durham and beyond have also sung with the Singers. There are four groups at present, Younger Singers (ages 6 to 8), Treble Notes (8 to 14), Director’s Choir (10 to 16) and Random Notes (14 to 20). Murphy says next year a fifth will be introduced, Youngest Singers for kids ages 4 to 6. The Singers have travelled to and performed in Ireland, China and at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Several alumni will be a part of the anniversary concert and there’s a reception afterwards. The Singers’ motto is ‘Excellence in life through excellence in music!’, and while Murphy aims to give departing Singers a strong foundation in music, members also learn the meaning and importance of teamwork, discipline, responsibility and more. But at the heart of it all is the music and the joy it brings. “I often say, ‘I’m working with the cream of the crop’,” Murphy says. “But these kids just like to sing.” The anniversary concert is at 2 p.m. at King Street Community Church, 611 King St. W., Oshawa. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and students, available at www.youngs- ingers.ticketjunior.com or by calling 905-686-9821. BY BARBARA HOWE mruta@durhamregion.com SCARBOROUGH — The whir of the coffee- grinding machine competes with babbling babies and their excited mothers who sit on bentwood chairs around tables, corralled by baby carriages. Next to them, a group of senior women take their time over a leisure- ly lunch at this coffee shop in Scarborough, perhaps plotting the next community social evening. At the high window table, a cou- ple of silver-haired gentlemen stoop over a number of large photo prints. One man signs the bottom of each, while the other care- fully rolls the prints into a sleeve, shakes his friend’s hand and is on his way. John Rowlands stays a while to reminisce about his life’s work as a photographer and the celebrities who have coloured his career through the camera lens. A brief flip through his portfolio reads like a who’s who of the music world. Rowlands describes himself as “just a kid from Ritson Road,” but the Oshawa-born photographer has not always stayed so close to home. Rowlands says he has toured the world nine times with rock ‘n’ roll bands and artists spanning five decades. He’s photographed stars from Abba to ZZ Top and everyone in between. He’s lived in Ottawa, California, Arizona and now resides in Scarborough. But Row- lands says he is now transitioning from being a highly active photographer to a highly active storyteller, and is in the process of cat- aloguing his 2.5 million negatives and slides so his legacy can be appreciated. Rowlands says his foundation for jumping on his career path was forged at an early age after he received replies back from letters he wrote as a schoolboy to TV stars and actors, such as Perry Como and Robert Cummings, and realized anything was possible. “That was my fuel, that was my energy,” said Rowlands. “I thought ‘wow, these people have great jobs, but they’re still people'.” Rowlands was 13 when he saved up his allowance and took his father’s camera to watch his heartthrob, 15-year-old Brenda Lee, in concert in Ottawa.  After the con- cert he spotted her dressing-room door and knocked on it. He remembers looking up at her mom, Grayce Tarpley. “Just came to thank Brenda for a great show,” Rowlands said. Tarpley invited him into the room and he chatted with Brenda for half an hour. “I carried her suitcase to her station wagon; I was so excited I wrote down the licence plate,” says Rowlands. “I got her autograph and a kiss on the cheek.  A week later I get my snapshots back from the drugstore, mailed them down (to Nashville), they sent me 35 bucks.” Rowlands went on, “In my first professional job at 13, I got $3 more than an ounce of gold. That got me into the business.” From there Rowlands picked up more pho- tography gigs. Record companies liked his style and booked him to cover Sam Cooke.  Later, New York-based 16 Magazine used him extensively to work for them. He sold countless prints for $80 each and by the mid- 1960s the Oshawa native was being flown to New York City for shoots and meetings. Rowlands was behind the lens to capture the British Invasion in the 1960s and creat- ed a real rapport with the likes of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Gerry and the Pace- makers. He had impromptu guitar lessons from George Harrison and shared corn on the cob with Leonard Cohen in his kitchen in Montreal. But Rowlands observed these pop icons are just like regular people offstage. “We were just regular folks telling regular stories,” says Rowlands. “Same crowd, same gang, same interests.” Rowlands says what makes his work stand out from the crowd is emotion. He says spending time with artists gives him the back-story about why songs are written. This gives him the edge of evoking a time and place in the shot. “I look for something that people will appreciate,” says Rowlands. Surprisingly, the most memorable subject Rowlands has worked with was Red Skel- ton, the American TV and radio entertainer.  Skelton invited 17-year-old Rowlands and a buddy to walk with him in a parade in Otta- wa in 1963, and gave them complimentary tickets to his sold-out show, “This guy had a heart bigger than Texas,” says Rowlands, choking back tears. “For all this rock ‘n’ roll stuff, it’s been great. But at the top of it all, Red’s been the greatest.” Rowlands says he kept in contact with Skel- ton until his death in 1997. Fifty years later, the blue-eyed photo junk- ie is still shooting the stars. Despite suffer- ing a stroke five years ago which left his left arm paralyzed, Rowlands still manages to capture music stars at their best. Four of his recent images of Rihanna have been short- listed for an upcoming CD cover. Since the stroke he has also photographed Paul McCartney, ZZ Top and covered the Otta- wa Blues Fest. A touring Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition, David Bowie Is, featur- ing Rowlands’s favourite photograph (and the late David Bowie’s favourite image of his career), The Archer, opens in Barcelona, Spain on May 25. All parents would love for their chil- dren to excel in their sport. There is no question most parents do the best they can with the skills and resourc- es they have. However, not all parents have the necessary tools to motivate, encourage and support their child’s athletic success. It is important to recognize that we as parents are not perfect and have consid- erable outside stressors to deal with that may interfere with our desire to help our child be successful in sport. Constantly criticizing, judging and pushing our youngster to do better only hurts performance. Kids love to play and have fun. Forc- ing your child to work like a robot and give up friends, parties, and social activ- ities is a formula for disaster. A negative, dependent and fearful relationship with parents is often the result. Positive reinforcement is much more powerful and motivating than criticism and harsh judgment. Harping on mis- takes and minor failures can be very damaging to the parent-child relation- ship and to the athlete’s self-esteem, confidence and belief in his or her potential. Most athletes know intuitively what errors they make and don’t need con- stant reminders regarding these mis- haps. Athletes who figure things out for themselves develop more confidence and trust in their abilities. Both parents need to be on the same page. They need to help the child focus on the process of becoming the best he or she can be no matter what the results are. Sport science has discovered that all athletes need love, support and encour- agement to give their best effort. Athletes who stop being motivated and want to quit their sport, refuse to listen and are constantly irritable, are signalling that they need help to turn things around. It is very important for parents to take a proactive approach by listening carefully to what the child is saying verbally and with body language. We believe that many parents could benefit from sport psychology to further their child’s emotional development and performance in sport and life. That it didn’t quite play out that way is just fine with Dave Demarinis, who will be back for a second season as head coach of the Jr. A team in the fall. After a competitive weekend devel- opment camp, the top 23 new prospects from among 70 or so took on the bulk of the 2016-17 Panthers in an exhibition game Sunday, and came away with a 6-4 win. Demarinis said the newcomers came out hard and surprised the veterans, who pushed back but couldn’t over- come the deficit. “Now our returning kids will have their eyes wide open and know that there are guys fighting for their jobs, which is good,” Demarinis reported on Monday. “All in all it was great a weekend.” The Panthers found themselves behind the 8-ball right from the get-go last season, with Demarinis moving up from assistant to head coach when Pat- rick Shearer left the team during train- ing camp for personal reasons. The young team struggled through a 9-42-1-2 season, second worst in the league, but showed enough signs of improvement to leave Demarinis and the rest of the brain trust optimistic for the future. “There were some challenging times last year, I’m not going to deny that, but I loved every game of it,” he said. “There’s never a bad day when you’re coaching a good group of kids, and it was definite- ly a good group of kids last year. I think our kids learned to play at the Jr. A level. They realize how much time away from the rink that they need to put in to be successful in this league.” The Panthers will lose only two players from last year’s team to uni- versity next season, Kyle Thomas and Kyle Hunter, and expect a solid core of returns, including Andrew Poulias, Anthony Stavrou, Steven Elliott and Joseph Franzen. Demarinis says the team will contin- ue to build around that core, but won’t be shy about adding newcomers to the mix as well. From the weekend camp, he said he was most impressed with Brook- lin’s Jacob Roach, Whitby’s Chad Yet- man, Bowmanville’s Mitchell Doyle and Courtice’s Riley Girard, who were all drafted by Ontario Hockey League (OHL) teams in 2016. “They’re going to be a big part of our hockey team moving forward if they don’t make the OHL,” Demarinis reported. “There’s going to be a good group of those kids who were out there this weekend who will be on our team next year.” Although the Jr. A hockey season is still ongoing, with the RBC Cup national championships currently being held in Cobourg, the Panthers are eager already for next season to begin. “We’re really optimistic heading into next year,” Demarinis said. “We’re not going to win it all, but it’s year two of the rebuild and we’re looking to make a major step and turn a lot more heads than we have. We’re still a com- paratively young team, but we definite- ly see the light at the end of the tun- nel and we’re definitely pushing in the right direction.” Ryan Pfeiffer / Metroland PICKERING -- Griffen Coutts made a blocker save during a scrimmage at the Pickering Panthers development camp at the Pickering Recreation Complex last weekend. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma y 1 8 , 2 0 1 7 34 AP SportS 'Beyond Blue and Gold' series just a small part of Pegula job for Joseph DeBenedictis Brian McNair bmcnair@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Joseph DeBenedictis knew exactly what he wanted to do for a liv- ing as a young boy growing up in Pickering, when he would have friends record magic shows he’d do around town, and then go back home and edit them into videos, long before the days of YouTube. He never envisioned the day he would win an Emmy award, however, and is still pinching himself that it happened on May 6 in New York City, where a Buffalo Sabres video from the Beyond Blue and Gold series was recognized in the sports interview/dis- cussion category at the 60th New York Emmy Awards gala. DeBenedictis, 28, is a video editor and producer with Pegula Sports and Entertain- ment, which owns the Sabres, Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Americans, as well as a music studio in Nashville. It’s a job that has kept him so busy for the past three-and-a-half years, that he is only now taking his first-ever two-week vacation, a honeymoon trip to Italy a year-and-a-half after he was married. He has little in the way of complaints, however, working in a field that few others felt offered a future while he was a student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. “I was lucky, I knew what I wanted to do from very young,” he said by phone from Italy. “It’s pretty awesome. I get to do a lot of different projects. It’s challenging, in a good way, and I work with some pretty incredible people. It’s a very collaborative workplace and the projects we get to work on get seen by a lot of people.” The Emmy Award was for a two-part series on Sabres centre Ryan O’Reilly, who was able to showcase his musical talents at the Pegula studio in Nashville while he was making his first all-star appearance there in 2016. DeBenedictis and his crew were nominat- ed for three Emmy awards all told, and could barely believe when they heard their name called in victory. “It was surreal. I was imagining it hap- pening and then when it was happening, it was unbelievable,” said DeBenedictis, who recorded the moment on his iPhone for a vlog. “There were 10 of us and we were all in disbelief. You kind of just get up and you quickly get to the stage and you come off- stage and then you realize what just hap- pened. It was pretty awesome.” DeBenedictis, who recently moved from Buffalo to Burlington to finally live with his wife Carley, has deep roots in Durham Region and often returns to visit family and friends. He was a helper with Rogers TV Durham and eventually produced his own comedy show there, The Wee Show, which helped him get accepted into Ryerson University’s radio and television program. He also played for the Pickering Soccer Club — he was the first to receive a scholarship grant from the club to help him chase his dream — and was lead singer of Preconfused, a band that played all over Durham before it broke up. DeBenedictis worked for the Canadian Football League as a video editor after gradu- ating from Ryerson before moving to Buffalo to work for the Sabres, a job that was expand- ed with the sale to the Pegula family. While admitting that the Emmy Award is a career highlight so far, he said it hasn’t changed his outlook. “I definitely didn’t get into this to win awards, because nobody should get into this business to win awards, but I guess to get some sort of acknowledgment is always nice,” he said, adding that he does it because he loves it. “If nobody watched it, I’d still be doing it.” Pickering native wins Emmy Award for Sabres video twitter photo NEW YORK -- Pickering’s Joseph DeBenedictis, right, won an Emmy award for his work on a Buffalo Sabres video as part of the Beyond Blue and Gold series. He is shown here holding the award with colleagues Travis Carlson and Sam Korotkin. Advertising Feature FOCUS ON BUSINESS PickeringAjax/ The Big M originally opened in 1965, and seven years ago Chris Papatheodorou reopened the drive-in style joint. He is proud to be continuing his father Ted’s tradition of offering delicious, original recipe, award winning homemade hamburgers. The restaurant’s blueprint for a better burger includes a toasted soft bun (that are delivered fresh daily), a seven ounce freshly grilled beef patty, topped with crisp iceberg lettuce, sliced beefsteak tomato, a slice of red onion, pickles, ketchup and yellow mustard. To make your burger even better, you can add on cheddar cheese, Canadian bacon and/or peameal bacon.Customers also love their famous steak on a Kaiser, homemade onion rings, French fries, sweet potato fries, homemade chicken souvlaki and The Big M chicken Caesar salad as well as the tasty Greek salad. While you are here, you can also enjoy one of the signature milkshakes, a soft iceA cream cone or a sundae. When you visit The Big M, it’s like taking a trip back in time. The restaurant offers an authentic 60’s vibe. The combination of great food and outstanding customer service will have your coming back time and time again. “We pride ourselves on our 50 plus year tradition of serving the Bay Ridges area, which is why we’ve gone back to the restaurant’s original feel,” Chris says. “We offer high quality food and a good time – plus, you can’t get a better hamburger or steak on a Kaiser anywhere else.”It’s no surprise that that the restaurant was voted in as number one hamburger in Ajax and Pickering.Drop by or drive up to The Big M at 711 Krosno Blvd. (at Liverpool Road, south of the 401) in Pickering for an incredible dining experience. SportS Ironheads, Green Gaels atop Mid East AJAX — The West Durham Ironheads and Green Gaels went into last night’s game at the Ajax Community Centre as the top two teams in the Mid East division of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B loop. The Green Gaels overcame a loss in their season opener by winning six in a row, good for a four-point lead on the Iron- heads (4-2) atop the division heading into the game (after our print deadline). The Gaels were coming off a dominant stretch of three home games in four days, winning by scores of 14-7 over Oakville last Thursday, 14-6 over Gloucester Saturday and 13-6 over Nepean Sunday. The Ironheads were coming off a big 11-6 win in Mississauga Sunday, the first loss of the season for the Tomahawks, who were also responsible for the Gaels’ lone defeat. Declan and Aidan Conlon led the way to victory with four points each, including a hat trick by Declan, while Tyler Newman earned his second win in net in as many starts. The Ironheads opened the season with a loss, then won three straight before fall- ing 17-8 in Oakville Friday. Mike Berger led the team with 18 points through six games, one more than Declan Conlon and Sean Westley and two more than Aidan Conlon. Berger and Declan Conlon shared the lead in goals with 11 each. AJAX — The Ajax Men's Basketball league came to an end with a surprising playoff upset. Logical Technical Solutions first upset league champs The Right Step in the semi- finals and then defeated the second-place team, Top Shelf, in the finals, 53-42. The team that won a mere five games during the regular season was solid in the final, leading 28-7 at the half. Centre Robert Clarke led the charge with a game-high 21 points and solid defence. Guards Calvin Simon and Charlton Mohammed added 14 and 12 respectively. Billy Jack tallied 18 points, Gregg McGuire and Roger Young 10 each, for the shocked Top Shelf squad. In the B championship, The Right Step hung on for a 57-49 over North Alliance Press after leading by only one at halftime. Jose Rivas continued his strong play, scoring 23, while teammate Eric Ellis added a dozen for the winners. Nick Mikos had 14 for NAP.
