Crowd chants ‘shut it down’ six years after Japanese nuclear disaster Chris Hall CHall@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A movement call- ing for the Pickering nuclear sta- tion to be shuttered marked the sixth anniversary of the Fukushi- ma disaster Saturday at a rally in the shadow of the controversial power plant. The Ontario Clean Air Alli- ance (OCAA) and Durham Nucle- ar Awareness (DNA) hosted the March 11 rally at the Pickering waterfront, with the nuclear sta- tion providing a backdrop for their call to have the facility shut down when its current license expires in August 2018. Ontario Power Genera- tion (OPG) is seeking a licence extension to 2024 to operate the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station beyond its expiry date of 2018. Waving flags, banners and signs that stat- ed their opposition to the licence extension, more than two dozen supporters wearing tuques and with their hands stuffed deep into their pockets joined the rally on a bit- terly cold Saturday afternoon at the Lake Ontario shoreline. A large inflatable grey elephant also made the trek down to the sandy beach near a children’s playground, symbolizing one of the key themes of the hour-long rally. “The elephants in the room are the nuclear power station,” said Angela Bischoff, outreach director of Ontario Clean Air Alli- ance, to the crowd that huddled around her. The Pickering station, she said, is a “very serious issue in the midst of our neighbour- hood.” “This is an accident waiting to happen,” Bischoff said of the facility, noting that 2.2 million people live within 30 kilometres of the Pickering generation site and nine mil- lion people rely on Lake Ontario for their drinking water. OPG, continued Bischoff, would never get permission today to build such a facility in an urban area. Pickering’s first four nuclear reactors went into service in 1971 and another four reactors went online in 1983. Six of the reac- tors are now in operation. The Pickering station was designed to last 30 years and is now 46 years old, said Bischoff. If OPG secures a licence extension, she continued, it would be in operation for 57 years. A better alternative to nuclear power, suggested Bischoff, would be to make use of surplus water power from Quebec, which would also serve to lower hydro bills. The rally came six years to the day after a major earthquake struck Japan on March 11, 2011, which saw a tsunami disable the power supply and cooling of three Fukushi- ma Daiichi reactors, which led to a nuclear accident. “This changed everything; I felt it in my guts,” said Janet McNeill, co-ordinator of Durham Nuclear Awareness, of the Fukushi- ma incident. Included among the concerns raised at the rally was the amount of radioactive triti- um released routinely into the air and water, the estimated 14,000 tonnes of high-level radioactive waste stored at the Pickering sta- tion and that emergency planning for a seri- ous accident in Ontario has not been updat- ed since 2009. As each of the concerns were raised, the crowd responded with chants of ‘Shut it down’. “The lies spewed by the nuclear industry are legion, simply legion,” said McNeill, who acknowledged she had a “secret agenda”. “Get people talking about this,” she said. “Be noisy and talk about the elephant.” Those attending the rally were encour- aged to offer their thoughts in a sentence or two, via a video recording, on why the Pickering plant should be shuttered. Orga- nizers plan to send that video to all political parties in Ontario. In fact, 2016 marked the fourth consecutive year that distracted driving was identified as the main cause of road fatalities, according to Ontario Provincial Police. The OPP announced a prov- ince-wide enforcement initiative aimed at distracted driving to be conducted over the March break, March 13 to 19. “Road deaths linked to dis- tracted drivers will not let up unless every road user says enough is enough and shows a complete intolerance for what continues to be the most life- threatening driver behaviour on our roads,” OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes said in a state- ment released Thursday. “Start- ing with this campaign, we want to see every Ontarian, especial- ly passengers of all ages, take a firm stand against those who endanger their lives by using their cellphones or engaging in other forms of distractions behind the wheel.” During 2016, OPP investigat- ed a total of 65 fatal incidents in which an inattentive driver was a contributing or primary fac- tor, the service said. By compar- ison, 55 deaths during the same period were speed-related, 53 were attributable to failure to properly use seatbelts and 45 involved alcohol. With the exception of 2012, inattentive drivers have been responsible for more deaths than either speeding or drunk drivers since distracted driv- ing laws took effect in 2009, the OPP said. Motorists convicted of dis- tracted driving face fines of $400 to $1,000, and three demerit points. The suspect’s ruse unravelled when cops positively identified him by a distinctive tattoo on his arm, Kawartha Lakes Police said. The driver, who was pulled over in Lindsay March 6, claimed not to have his licence with him and pro- vided what police learned was a false name. Officers determined his real identity after seeing a tattoo of a cougar on his arm, police said. The man had been prohibited from driving as a result of criminal convictions, police said. Feraidon Ibrahem showed no emotion as Justice Bruce Glass sentenced him after he was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Nasira Fazli. Ibrahem stabbed Fazli, 31, numer- ous times during an argument in her Torr Lane home in Ajax on July 19, 2013. “No one is a winner in this kind of sit- uation. Everyone here has suffered some form of loss,” Glass said during sentencing on Friday, March 10. Family members of Fazli, including her mother and sisters, were in the court for the sentencing, as were several of the jurors who had previously heard the case. Fazli and Ibrahem had a young child, who family members say has struggled since his mother’s death. The Crown had been seeking a sen- tence of between 15 and 18 years before Ibrahem could apply for parole, while the defence suggested between 10 to 13 years. Glass said Ibrahem is a “self-centred person." “He took very little responsibility for the events. He took his wife’s life and left his child without parents,” Glass said. “It’s reflective that Mr. Ibrahem does not care about anyone else than himself.” In addition to the prison time, Ibrahem can’t have any contact with his son or the Fazli family. In an interview, Fazli’s sister Sharipa said, “I think it’s been a long four years and we fought as hard as we could. We were asking for 15 to 18 years, so we think it’s a good outcome.” Fazli came to Canada from Afghani- stan when she was five. She and Ibrahem had entered into an arranged marriage in Afghanistan in 2010. Ibrahem joined Fazli and their young son in Canada in April of 2013. The marriage quickly began to unrav- el as Ibrahem wasn’t able to get accredi- tation as a doctor and Fazli was upset he couldn’t get a job and he refused to help out around the house. Glass noted there was friction between the couple as Fazli “was an independent woman and she didn’t want to be a less independent woman.” Ibrahem felt “women in Canada had too much power,” Glass added. The judge noted after Ibrahem had stabbed Fazli, he called his brother in Afghanistan and told him what he had done. The brother told him to call a cous- in living in Toronto, who said Ibrahem had to call 911. When police showed up, Ibrahem admitted he had killed Fazli. During the trial, Ibrahem said a “black veil” had come over him as he struck out at his wife and he doesn’t remember the incident. “He claimed it wasn’t his intent to kill his wife and he planned to kill her,” Glass said. Glass noted Fazli was the main bread winner for her family, including her mother, grandmother and sisters. “The impact on the family has over- whelmed them. One can imagine the fam- ily will have difficulty coming to grips with what happened,” he added. “A very young child is struggling to cope with the loss of his mother.” He noted Ibrahem had struggled com- ing to Canada, but added, “The laws of Canada do not change simply because a person was raised in another country. “Stabbing her in all the vital organs wasn’t an accident. It was an intended and brutal action,” Glass said, adding she had been stabbed in her heart, kidney, liver, lungs, intestines and spinal column. Being trained as a doctor meant Ibra- hem “was more knowledgeable and more skilled than the average person would be. Her wounds were not superficial, but major incisions into Ms. Fazli.” Glass pointed out 11 of the 12 jurors recommended no parole eligibility for 25 years, while one juror gave no recommen- dation. Ibrahem has shown “no legitimate remorse. A simple observation is he does not like being in custody after his wife’s death.” The judge said Ibrahem has portrayed himself as “a poor stranded person over- whelmed by the customs here in Canada. A person doesn’t have the right to come here and impose his customs.” Sharipa Fazli said: “I think what we want everyone to know now is there’s an orphan. He has no mother and no father. When he grows up, he will learn about what happened on his own.” The child has been described as having autism, but Glass said there has been no medical information supplied to support that. The boy struggles with speech and the family has set up a Youcaring.com fund- raising page to help with his needs. To help, go to the support Yasin page. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 column our opinion Connecting women with trade secrets to success pam Stoneham Guest columnist Scratching that itch to talk or text on your cellphone while driving comes with consequences -- some that are hard on the pocketbook, while still others could be life- changing or potentially fatal. And, this March break, the OPP will attempt to crack down on the practice of distracted driving with a province-wide blitz through March 19 on provincial high- ways. March break means more families will perhaps be taking to the province’s road- ways. And the OPP distracted driving cam- paign hopefully means they’ll get to their destinations safely, without the spectre of inattentive drivers putting themselves and others at risk by texting and talking while behind the wheel. Cellphones are both a blessing and a bane. In the realm of road fatalities, evi- dence continues to mount that distracted driving is making roads unsafe and out- and-out dangerous. Distracted driving is against the law in Ontario — has been since 2009 — and comes with fines of $400 to $1,000 and three demerit points. But it seems many drivers quite simply are not getting the message that answering that call or text is simply not worth it. The OPP says 2016 marked the fourth consecutive year that distracted driving was identified as the leading cause of road fatalities. During 2016, the OPP investigated 65 fatal incidents in which an inattentive driv- er was a contributing or primary factor. By comparison, 55 deaths during the same period were speed-related, 53 were attrib- utable to failure to properly use seatbelts, and 45 involved alcohol. With the exception of 2012, inattentive drivers have been responsible for more deaths than either speeding or drunk driv- ing since distracted driving laws took effect in 2009, noted the OPP. OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes was blunt in his assessment that road deaths attributed to distracted driving will con- tinue until drivers in Ontario finally say enough is enough. “Starting with this campaign, we want to see everyone in Ontario, especially passengers of all ages, take a firm stand against those who endanger their lives by using their cellphones or engaging in other forms of distractions behind the wheel.” So, while travelling provincial highways -- especially during March break -- put the phone down. Whatever bell or whistle is beckoning you to answer, just remember -- it can wait. That call or text will still be there when you arrive at your destination -- safely. Put the phone down while driving during March break Governments have spending problem, not revenue problem To the editor: Re: ‘Taxes are not inherently evil’, col- umn, March 2 Contrary to the opinions expressed by Jonathan O’Mara, our tax dollars are mis- managed and misspent by all levels of government. For those of us who work hard in the private sector creating the wealth need- ed for our highly functioning society, we are deeply offended when called selfish for wanting to keep our earnings for our families. It is easier for public-sector employees with guaranteed yearly raises, gold-plat- ed benefits and pensions to falsely accuse us of being vociferous citizens that lack empathy for those less fortunate. Our governments have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. The middle class can only pay so much tax to support the public sector. Until we can elect politicians who have the courage to cut spending and balance the books, interest payments incurred by govern- ments will only increase and we’ll contin- ue to see service cuts, road tolls and user fees. Stephen Burkholder Whitby letter to the editor Last year, Durham College (DC) pilot- ed a women-only elevating devices mechanic (EDM) preapprenticeship program that gave 15 students the opportunity to train in a field that has long- been considered non-traditional for them. Out of this trail-blazing group, 13 women attained their EDM-in-training license; nine achieved EDM Level 1, the first of three levels needed to complete apprenticeship school- ing; 10 students received job placements in the industry, which led to two earning apprenticeships; and six accepted job offers in the field. Considering women account for only one per cent of all elevator mechanics in Canada, the program was a great success. So when the college created a new two-year mechanical technician -- elevating devices diploma program, on the heels of the female- focused program, expectations and optimism for female enrolment were considerably high. The program, which launches this September, has seen an overwhelming number of appli- cants, four of whom are women. While still a small number, it’s a promising start. When I started my teaching career at Dur- ham College seven years ago, the student population of the School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship and Renewable Technology was about 95 per cent male, and it hasn’t real- ly changed. While top employers like Ontario Power Generation are upholding gender par- ity as a long-term goal, those of us in the busi- ness of helping to grow the skilled workforce they need are still tackling how to support them in achieving such aspirations. The often ignored truth about the trades bears repeating: these are good, high-paying careers for smart individuals. There’s work in Canada for tradespeople and in a time when it is challenging to find work with good pay, women shouldn’t be shying away from it. When considering career paths, students should keep in mind that completing an apprenticeship and becoming a journeyper- son, such as a mechanic, electrician, carpen- ter or plumber, isn’t the only career option available in the trades. There are huge num- bers of professionals across multiple indus- tries who support journeypersons and can also benefit from studying a trade. These are some of the messages I hope more than 100 female high school students will take away from their visit to Durham Col- lege next month when we host a Skills Ontar- io event that aims to connect young women with female mentors who are already working or training in a skilled trade, and to also give them a hands-on introduction to those fields. It’s time women start taking full advantage of these trade secrets to success. -- Pam Stoneham is associate dean of the School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship and Renewable Technology at Durham College. At their Oct. 17 meeting, council endorsed a notice of motion requesting that Claremont Park be renamed in the memory of Rick Johnson. But after city staff learned the park was officially opened in 1923 as Clare- mont Memorial Park in honour of those who served and fell in the Great War, staff suggested waiting to name a park after the late councillor in the future Seaton neighbourhood. “I think it will be an appropriate memorial to the work that Coun. According to a staff report, at the opening event of Claremont Memori- al Park, two bronze tablets were placed prominently at the gate pillars at the entrance of the park, which list 15 men from north Pickering that fell in the Great War, 83 names of those who served and three nursing sisters. There is no remaining debate on this except maybe in an alternate universe somewhere; science has reached con- sensus on this and science is right. That is a real fact, as is the science that thor- oughly debunked old theories like the earth being flat, cigarette smoking being good for you and drinking before driving being OK. Your newspaper shouldn’t be seen to be legitimizing things that just aren’t true. While on the subject of alternate facts, I’d like to suggest that Mr. Korn consider a few other actual facts and look beyond the present government to earlier times, when the Conservatives and Ernie Eves planted the seeds of our present hydro problems. Conservatives, NDP, and Lib- erals all have their fingerprints on this file. Consideration of how to effective- ly remedy the problem is what we need now. Deborah Tiffin Nestleton Why don’t needy Canadians get the same benefits as illegal refugees, reader asks To the editor:  On the news tonight they again addressed the issue of the refugees crossing from the U.S. into Canada via Manitoba. They interviewed a Somalian woman who crossed in November, was given ref- ugee status and is now living in a lovely apartment and getting social assistance. And she is now helping the people com- ing across the border by taking them in. Is there no end to this? To me there is something wrong with this picture. We have people living on the streets, seniors who can’t afford to pay their rent. I am talking people who have spent all their working years in Canada and contributed greatly to our economy. So why aren’t we giving these people the same treatment as we are giving to ref- ugees who are coming into our country illegally? Marjorie Seymour Pickering Secure your garbage, recycling resident asks To the editor:  The last few weeks have been very windy the day before recycle and gar- bage pickup. Please, just put your stuff out the morning of — but if you insist on putting your stuff out the night before, when the wind is at its peak, please secure what you put out. A helpful hint is to stack your bins and lay your compost bin on top of it, or tuck your stacked bins on the inside with compost firmly against on the outside. The weight of it will hold your bins in place and prevent your plastic bottles, papers, etc., from rolling down the street and in your neighbour’s yard. Our planet thanks you.   Aline Tossmann Pickering 1355 Kingston Road 905.492.7263 jinnys.ca/pandorapickering THE PANDORA STORE AT PICKERING TOWN CENTRE du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 5 , 2 0 1 7 9 P CSEP Certified Fitness Staff Fitness Class Studios Cardio Conditioning Rooms Weight Room with Indoor Track 25 Metre Swimming Pool Racquetball & Handball Courts Singles & Doubles Squash Courts Indoor Tennis Courts Child Supervision Members Change Rooms with Whirlpool & Sauna Spring & Summer 2017 City Services & Leisure Guide is here. The Durham Region Works Depart- ment holds the day to encourage resi- dents to drop off reusable items so that they can be kept out of the waste stream. Items include clothing, textiles, furniture, appliances, cabinets, countertops and most other reusable renovation materials. The items will be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStores (Ajax, Oshawa and Uxbridge locations), Diabetes Canada and the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Only items deemed suitable for reuse by charities will be accepted. Garbage, household hazardous waste and electron- ics will not be accepted. Materials refused by charities must be removed by resi- dents and may be disposed of at one of the region’s waste management facilities, where fees may apply. Reuse Days will be held monthly until October. They run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre, 4600 Garrard Road, Whitby.  For more information, including a list of acceptable items, visit www.durham. ca/wasteevents or call 1-800-667-5671. To learn more about waste management in Durham, visit www.durham.ca/waste or download the Durham Region Waste app. Reuse Day in Durham on Saturday BY KATIE RYALEN Scottish Bakery. Bet we have your atten- tion now, don’t we? Just the mention of those two lovely words makes our mouths water. If you find yourself hankering for a warm scone or a meat pie all of a sudden, sorry about that. To make up for it, may we suggest But N’ Ben Scottish Bakery and Butchers? With locations in Whitby, Pickering and Scarborough, traditional Scottish fare to be found at But N’ Ben include the infa- mous haggis and black pudding, Scotch meat pies, Cornish pasties, and bridies. But N’ Ben also offers sweet favourites such as empire biscuits, fern tarts, Eccles cakes and currant slices. “We try to stick to the traditional Scottish product,” insists owner Melanie Roberts. In fact, as owner of a Scotch bakery and deli chain, there isn’t much she doesn’t like - although some might be shocked to know that she’s actually not a black pud- ding fan. “I’ve eaten enough of it,” she laughs. But N’ Ben started when Melanie’s grandfather came to Canada in 1966 from Scotland, where the family had a bak- ery. When he came, he brought all of his time-tested recipes with him. From there, Melanie’s mother and father carried on the business after her grandfather. Then, three years ago when they both retired, it was Melanie’s turn to take over. “I have an older sister and a younger brother,” she says, “but I was the only one that wanted to continue the tradition and keep it in the family.” The family’s first store that opened in Canada was at Kennedy Road and Eglin- ton Avenue. A few years later, a second location opened in Scarborough and then the Kennedy location was moved to Pickering. In the early 2000s, the volume of prod- ucts offered by But N’ Ben became so large they had to open another location strictly for baking. The latest development for But N’ Ben came in 2010, when the government implemented new rules and regulations for wholesale products. From then on, the company became provincial- ly licenced to wholesale their products. “This year is our fiftieth anniversary,” Melanie states. “With that, we’ve decided to open up a retail location in Whitby.” Today, her chain of stores has three retail locations, a processing plant, and they supply a number of stores across the province. Melanie has been involved in the com- pany with many different roles since she was a teenager. Getting to know every aspect of the business is something she credits for why her employees have such a high respect for her. She says, “When my staff come up short and they need an extra hand, whether it’s to help baking or make pie shells, I’m there. I put in that effort, and I fill those positions. I help out, I don’t just dictate.” On the other side of the counter, cus- tomer service is a high priority for Mela- nie and her staff. Treating each person who comes through the doors as a friend is what any good Scottish bakery does, and Melanie likes to think that’s one of the reasons why her customers come back time and time again. “You can’t get what we have at [a big box store],” she points out. “None of the big stores sell the prod- ucts that we make, so we’re fortunate in that way.” She does, however, understand inti- mately that a negative experience can impact a family-run business in a bad way, and that’s why she strives for a high standard of customer service. “You have to,” she insists. “If people have a bad experience, they just won’t come back.” Of course, another reason why cus- tomers come back is because But N’ Ben prides itself on using the highest qual- ity of ingredients. Melanie explains, “We don’t do short-cuts, and all those baking methods that we use now are how they would have done it a hundred years ago.” Furthermore, everything at But N’ Ben is made fresh on a daily basis, from the breads and rolls, to the pies and bridies. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ma r c h 1 5 , 2 0 1 7 14 AP WE TREAT YOURHOME LIKE OUR OWN Attic insulAtion •Fully Insured•WSIB Covered•Family Owned and Operated•First Aid Trained•Written Warranty On Workmanship VOTEd #1 ROOfINg COMpANY6 YEARs IN A ROW 201 6 READERS’C HOICEA WARDDIAMOND www.ajaxroofing.com Call Today For A Free Estimate905-427-2116 Marie G. So he did, and then years later when he came to Canada and opened our store at Kennedy Road, one of the first cus- tomers to come through the door were those people he catered to back home in Scotland.” Interestingly, when visitors from Scot- land come to Canada even today, Melanie and her staff find that they’ll come to her Scottish bakery for the novelty of seeing what one in a foreign country is like. “But now,” Melanie says, “we’re getting asked by these people if we can ship our prod- ucts to Scotland. They’re that good.” Also, Melanie has noticed that a lot of people who come into the store are those of her own generation who are trying to carry on the traditions of their own fami- lies. “They still want their full Scotch break- fast on Sundays,” she says. “People want to keep their heri- tage going and transfer it onto their children. I think it’s like that with every culture. Everyone wants it to be known through the generations, where you came from.” But N’ Ben Pickering, 619 Kingston Rd. Whitby, 896 Brock Rd. Misinformation can affect all of us, but there is a way to spot food fiction and separate it from fact. Use these tips to help you navigate the online jungle. • Is the website promising a quick fix or a miracle cure? • Are they trying to sell me something instead of educating me? • Are the website writers unqualified to be giving me nutrition information? • Do they have facts that sound too good to be true? • Does the information come from per- sonal opinions or scientific evidence? • Is the content missing reviews or verifi- cation by medical experts? It can be confusing and frustrating to see health and nutrition recommendations change. Sometimes it feels like ‘the experts’ are always changing their minds about health guidelines. Changing recommenda- tions often means health experts are learn- ing more, conducting more specific experi- ments, or doing a more rigorous review of previous studies. It’s important to remem- ber that one new study or theory is rarely enough to change our advice.  Becoming familiar with research terms can help you understand information you read to help you make better decisions about the information. • Blind experiment — in this type of experiment, study subjects don’t know which treatment they are getting. This avoids the “placebo effect” where subjects expect the treatment to work, so it does. • Experimental group — the group who gets the treatment being studied. • Control group — the control group is treated the same way as the experimental group but they do not receive the treatment being tested. This is an important part of a study because it means any effect observed in the experiment group is a result of the treatment. • Placebo— a placebo mimics the treat- ment and is used to test the effect of being given the treatment. It could be a diet, a drink or even a sham treatment.  Here are a few sites that provide reliable information to help you sort fact from fic- tion this nutrition month: Dietitians of Can- ada; EatRight Ontario; Nutrition Resource Centre. Andrea Miller is a consulting registered dietician who emphasizes that healthy eat- ing should be good, nourishing and deli- cious.
