The city will celebrate through- out all of 2017, featuring activity enhancements, new events and programs. The celebrations kicked off immediately at the Mayor’s New Year’s Day Levee, which includ- ed the launch of a community art project celebrating The Group of Seven’s Tom Thompson. “Tom Thompson was born in Pickering and is an iconic Canadi- an artist,” said Tanya Ryce, supervi- sor of cultural services. The city has hired an artist to create an outline of a painting by Thompson and she’s teaching peo- ple how to fill it in using various materials. Two citizens are being credited with stepping in to save the three- year-old, who is now in the care of his father. The woman was arrested soon after the inci- dent, around 4 p.m. Feb. 9, Durham police said. Police said one person became involved after seeing the woman acting strangely as she held the child on the railing of a bridge near Rotary Park. The civilian engaged the woman in conversation and walked with her toward a parking lot, then noticed the woman had gone toward the beach, police said. That person and another civilian intervened when they saw the woman holding the child under water, police said. They brought the child to shore and wrapped him in warm clothing. The child was treated at hospital and released to his father. The woman was apprehended under the Mental Health Act, and arrest- ed after she was released following an assessment, police said. A 29-year-old Ajax woman is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and failing to provide the neces- saries of life. Police withheld her iden- tity to protect that of the child. Police said the two citizens who inter- vened to save the child will be nominat- ed for commendation. Benjamin Priebe / Metroland PICKERING -- Sharon Milton, right, supervisor of recreation services for the City of Pickering, worked with a committee on Feb. 9 to plan one of Pickering’s many anniversary events for Canada’s 150th birthday this year. “It’s been broken up into a number of squares in a grid pattern,” said Ryce. The project will travel to the Family Day event on Feb. 20 and hopefully to a few more this year, said Ryce. The museum is also hosting a Tom Thompson exhibit in the summer. The city has received grants from both the federal and provincial governments for event enhancements and is waiting on a couple more. New on the agenda is the Journey Through Confederation on May 4. This youth active living fair is supported by a $40,000 grant from the Canada 150 Fund. The theme, Pickering’s Confederation Journey - 1867 to 2067, will celebrate who we are as Canadians in 2017 and who we want to be in the future, said Ryce. The event, for teens aged 13 to 19, will include inclusive, accessible heritage sport and recreation; entrepreneurship; art; dance; theatre; fashion; food and technology. Another major event will take place on May 27, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture, Tourism and Sport. The city will host a youth arts showcase - with the theme “I am Ontar- io” - an addition to Artfest on the Espla- nade, Pickering’s free annual event that celebrates the arts. The youth-led project will be open to all residents of Ontario who are 25 and under and will include performanc- es on the stage; an art show and sale; a juried competition for the selection of a designed public art piece; workshops and seminars; and immersive hands-on art activities to showcase local and iconic artists. Canada Day festivities will be grand as usual in Pickering, but with a surprise guest Ryce is excited about, but can’t yet disclose. Residents can look out for a pop-up booth at various events, in which attend- ees can travel across Canada through the use of a green screen. “What you’re generally going to see is, as a community we’re celebrating the things that make Ontario and a Canada a great place to live, work and play,” said Ryce. “We’re going to celebrate all that is Canada, who we will be and who we have been through all our events. It’s just a dif- ferent lens from what we normally do.” Residents are invited to share their Canada 150 celebrations with the city by tagging #PickeringProud or #Canada150 in social media posts. They can visit www. pickering.ca/en/Canada150.aspx for a full list of events, more information and to learn how to get involved. Darius Thorne "was respected and admired as a teammate," said Phil Matsush- ita, principal at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering. Thorne, 18, was co-captain of the Pine Ridge Pumas last year when they won the Lake Ontario Secondary School Ath- letics championship, before advancing to the quarter-finals of the provincials. His death has shaken students at the school, particularly his former teammates, Matsushita said. "He demonstrated great leadership and the players respected him," he said. "Any time there's a tragedy like this it affects the whole community, but it's been a very difficult time for the basketball players." Durham police responding to a report of a gunshot inside an apartment build- ing on Quebec Street at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 8 found a wounded Thorne in a hallway. He was rushed to hospital, where he was pro- nounced dead. Thorne is Durham Region's third homi- cide victim this year. News of Thorne's death prompted expres- sions of grief on Twitter. "It is with great sad- ness we announce the passing of one of last year's Captains," said a post from the Pine Ridge basketball program. "Mr. Dar- ius Thorne, you will always be loved and remembered." Also on Twitter, journalist Darren Andrade wrote, "The Toronto basketball community lost a great son and talent this week in Darius Thorne. Always liked the kid. See the good. Be inspired." Police have provided no details on what may have led to the shooting. No suspect description has been released. Thursday, Matsushita said counsellors were at the school to assist students and staff who have been affected by Thorne's death. "In this case, a special area was set up," he said. "That way, collectively the students can come together. "It's not just the students," Matsushita added, "it's for staff as well." The principal said coaches form strong bonds with students, especially in such an "integral" a program as Pine Ridge basket- ball. The team's intense schedule, which includes tournament play, means the time commitment for both players and coaches is significant, he said. "When they coach any sport, they're com- mitted to it," Matsushita said. Counselling will be made available for as long as students and staff require it, the principal said. Anyone with information on the inci- dent is asked to call police at 905-579- 1520, extension 5326, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Publication Sales Agreement #40052657 Letter to the editorcoLumn our opinion Business programs are typically one of the most popular degree choices for university students in Canada. With transferable skills and professional core programming, a business degree offers a wide variety of future career options. At Trent University Durham - GTA, we’ve taken the typical business degree to the next level. Here, we say there are five ways students can do business at Trent. Actually, there’s more. A lot more. In fact, the possibilities are endless. Trent’s unique Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree is one of the most distinctive in Canada. As is the case with most of our degree programs at Trent, we believe that combining your passions and tailoring your degree to suit your personality, and your career goals, is imperative. Our B.B.A. is no exception. The program focuses on the business fundamentals of economics, manage- ment and entrepreneurship, and includes a full slate of accounting courses that pre- pare students for the competitive busi- ness world. Trent has also broadened the program to ensure that each student is able to explore their interests fully. Trent’s B.B.A. degree can be combined with virtu- ally any other arts or science degree, from English to media studies, anthropology to psychology. Students who choose to com- bine their degrees into a joint major most certainly have an edge - merging a solid understanding of good business practices with theoretical perspectives, all the while strengthening their soft skills. If a joint major isn’t your thing, Trent’s School of Business also offers specializa- tion programming in accounting, entre- preneurship, marketing and consumer cul- ture, and human resource management. Students can delve deeper into these core business principles, to become experts in the field. As an added bonus, the School of Busi- ness is home to Trent’s internship program, giving students hands-on, real-world expe- rience in the workforce. It’s no wonder that applications to Trent’s School of Business are rising and the program is more popular than ever before. Our program is generating innova- tive leaders who are fully equipped to work in a changing social environment - who think critically and passionately about the world around them. For more information about Trent Uni- versity’s School of Business, visit trentu.ca/ business. -- Dr. Amina Malik is a professor in the School of Business at Trent University Business booming at Trent University Durham Amina malik Guest columnist our opinion Feb. 15 is Canada’s flag day and as Can- ada marks 150 years since Confederation, many communities have special plans for the year. Oshawa Public Libraries is celebrating with special events throughout 2017 at all branches. Each month is something dif- ferent. In January Canadian writers were celebrated, while this month Canadi- an sports and activities will be the OPL’s focus. Be sure to check out the library’s list of the top 150 Canadian books. Pick up a copy at any branch. This is just a sampling of what’s tak- ing place in communities across Durham Region, culminating with the major cele- brations happening July 1. It’s definitely a year of celebrations. On Feb. 15, 1965, the Canadian nation- al flag was raised for the first time on Par- liament Hill but the creation of Canada’s flag was not without controversy. Before 1965 the Royal Union Flag, also known as the Union Jack, represented Canada. However, the Red Ensign, the flag of the Canadian Merchant Maine, was flown on Canadian buildings overseas and often flown unofficially on Canadian buildings including the Peace Tower of the Parlia- ment Buildings in Ottawa. In 1945, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King struck a national flag committee and the public submitted 2,409 designs - maple leaves were fea- tured in 1,611, Royal Union Flags in 383, stars in 231, fleurs-de-lys in 184, bea- vers in 116, crowns in 49, and 22 crosses, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia. However the flag debate would continue for many more years. By the 1960s there was a strong Quebec separatist movement underway, and with its links to Canada’s British colonizers, the Royal Union Flag didn’t represent French Canadians. Months of debate starting in 1964 at the urging of Prime Minister Les- ter B. Pearson, finally produced the Cana- dian flag we know today. The red maple leaf had long been a Canadian emblem in poetry, song, coinage, and medals. With the creation of flag, the maple leaf became the unifying emblem of all Canadians. Canada’s past hasn’t always been uni- fied. As a colonized country, Canada’s First Nation communities were dominat- ed by British and French settlers. With the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the country is finally beginning to come to terms with that darker part of Canada’s history. Now growing as a coun- try, Canada can celebrate a wealth of immigrants from across the globe. As Canada marks 150 years, let’s come together as a unified country. As a free, beautiful and relatively peaceful country - there is a lot to celebrate. Canada’s flag day a reminder of the country’s history Employment changes are part and package of changing technologies To the editor: Re: ‘Self-ordering technologies cost jobs,’ letters, Feb. 2 Our face paced world is all about effi- ciency and technology. Both save time, and time is money. Employment is being transferred from the front line service counter to the behind-the-scenes tech industry. Unfortunately, part-time jobs are the victim. You yourself admitted that you frequent ATMs. How many jobs has that eliminated from the banking industry for your convenience? There clearly is a rea- son. Whether it’s an ATM, or a food order- ing touch screen device, or a website to order movie tickets, if you have flirted with any form of technology to save yourself time and money (increased cost to con- sumers), you are potentially guilty of tak- ing a part-time job away from a “live” per- son. Police have released virtually no details about the death of Jermaine Auld, 33, who was found dead at a home on Devineridge Avenue, in the Ross- land Road East and Audley Road area, at about 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Officers responding to a call from a family member found a man dead with "an apparent gunshot wound," police said. Auld's death is the fourth homicide of 2017 in Durham Region. A total of four murders were investigated in the region for all of 2016. On Monday, the Toronto Sun, cit- ing an unnamed source, reported that Auld's death was part of an ongoing war between two Toronto-based gangs, the Sick Thugz and Halal. Police declined to comment on the assertion. "The homicide unit is conducting interviews and there is no further update available at this time as the investigation continues," police spokesperson Jodi MacLean said. An autopsy was to be conducted on the weekend. Police have provided no update on the incident since Saturday, and there's been no information on suspects released. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-579-1520, extension 5247 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Jason Liebregts / Metroland AJAX — Durham Regional Police were investigating a crime scene on 109 Devineridge Ave. in Ajax on Feb. 11. Ajax resident Jermaine Auld was found dead from a gunshot wound. For example, if you sell your principal residence you now have to report it on your tax return or face hefty penalties and interest. Gregory Badley is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) that opened his own business 12 years ago. Not only is heexperienced with all typesof taxes, including personal, business and corporate taxes as well as associated taxes such as HST, capital gains, etc.,he also loves doing them! As a member of and being regulated by a professional association, he has to attend tax seminars every year which no doubt will help his clients. “I can sit for hours reading tax literatures,” laughs Gregory. “Even on vacation, I will be reading tax bulletins.” Don’t let his designation as a CPA scares your wallet - his prices are very competitive(generally $65 and $55 for seniors, plus taxes) and his knowledge and experience may end up saving you more than his fee! Gregory takes his time with your taxes, reviewing every single return. He sits down with his clients to go over their returns with them, explaining why their refund or amount owing is higher or lower than expected. His clients love his service so much that they voted for his business which has won the Readers’ Choice Awards two years in a row for tax preparation and accounting. His advice is to bring your tax documents in early, not only to avoid the rush, but to get your refund sooner since all tax returns are e-filed. His office is open all year long, so you can bring your taxes by anytime. In addition to personal, business and corporate taxes, his firm also offers other accounting services, including bookkeeping, payroll, incorporations, business plans and more. Tax-R-Us is located at 257-1099 Kingston Road in Pickering. During tax season, his office is open Mondayto Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 416-558-7547 or visit www.taxrus.ca. Take the headacheout of tax season with Tax-R-Us Gregory Badley,CPA, CGA, FCCA Letters to the editor Colleges should get their spending under control before asking for more funding To the editor: Re: ‘The underfunding of college educa- tion can’t continue’, column, Feb. 8 In his column on college funding, Dur- ham College President Donald Lovisa describes a current and future picture of inadequate college funding. He also expresses his difficulty in under- standing why college education continues to be shortchanged. Are they underfunded or are they mis- managing their financial resources? It’s a matter of perspective. Virtually everyone employed in the pub- lic sector, including community colleg- es, has higher-than-private-sector wages, numerous benefits, generous vacation allowances, and gold-plated defined-bene- fit pension plans. They are the envy of virtually everyone aspiring to hold a perfect-set-of-working- conditions job. When you direct 70 per cent of your rev- enues toward employee compensation, benefits and pensions, you unavoidably put yourself in a financially precarious situa- tion. Incidentally, Mr. Lovisa has an annual salary of more than $300,000, which would have been substantially more if the prov- ince didn’t intervene to restrict planned outlandish increases to college senior administration. If Mr. Lovisa genuinely cares about edu- cation funding he should develop a greater sense of perspective and realize all full-time college employees should take less so that students can get more of the available fund- ing and colleges can be more financially viable. Enriching administrators and tenured professors to the exclusion and detriment of part-time professors and students is not a recipe for financial solvency or equity. The answer to reducing operating costs and therefore reducing funding requirements is in negotiating collective-bargaining agree- ments which are both reasonable to the employees and acceptable to the taxpayers. Asking for more funding from a provincial government that is running massive annual deficits is illogical and selfish. Colleges Ontario should realize that employment at colleges - or any public sec- tor job, for that matter - should be a matter of public service, not self-service. Greg Milosh Oshawa We need ‘Total Recall’ legislation to hold politicians accountable To the editor: Re: ‘Province’s toll decision reeks of hypocrisy’, editorial, Feb. 2 I totally agree! Enough already. We need recall legis- lation to be applied to federal, provincial and municipal governments. Too many shenanigans and down- right abuse of taxpayer funds and polit- ical fundraising chicanery like vote- buying initiatives going on and it must end. Those who have jobs, including our younger student base carrying large debt, are under severe hardship mak- ing ends meet and it just isn’t right in an otherwise rich democracy. Those who haven’t yet noticed in Ontario, Kathleen Wynne’s corrupt Lib- erals are already throwing goodies at potential voters by extending teacher contracts until after the 2018 election, but totally mum on the cost. Suddenly Health Minister Eric Hoskins is now supporting Nanonife pancreatic cancer surgery and announced a Syrian baby will get spe- cial surgery after turning down our own Ontario kids with similar costly life-sav- ing surgeries. It’s all theatrics for voter support. Demand this recall legislation from every political level. Tell our prime min- ister, MPs/Opposition, premier, MPPs/ Opposition, regional chairs/councillors, mayor/councillors. They all need to hear this now so together we can make a difference. The British Columbia government no longer messes with its public. We deserve the same! Rupert Cameron Whitby Trump is no leader of the free world To the editor: Re: ‘Hate should not be tolerated here or in the U.S.’, editorial, Feb. 2 What inspires news reporters and edi- tors, or anyone, for that matter, to call Trump the leader of the free world? I live in the free world and he is certain- ly not my leader. While the number of officers and employees is remaining the same, the services’s budget is increasing by almost $5.6 million. The increase means the budget will rise to $193 million in 2017. Speaking to Durham Regional Coun- cil’s committee of the whole on Wednes- day, Feb. 1, during a budget debate, Police Services Board Vice-Chair- man Allan Furlong noted, “Most of the increase is to pay for pay and benefit increases.” The service remains at 871 officers and 373 civilian staff, 304 of them full- time and 69 part-time. The increase in salaries and benefits actually went up by $5.7 million, but was offset by decreases elsewhere in the ser- vices’s budget. Furlong said the police budget came in with a three-per cent increase, which was “within the guideline approved by regional council.” “The cost of police in Durham remains competitive with our comparators.” While the service hasn’t increased the number of officers, Deputy Chief Uday Jaswal said retiring officers are replaced by new ones. The department tries to forecast retirements and find replace- ments. “There’s a lag between retirement and replacement,” he said, adding new offi- cers first have to go to police college. “We haven’t had a staffing increase in a number of years. The workload has been increasing,” Jaswal said. There’s no money in the budget for body-worn cameras, he noted, adding a report on the issue will be presented to the police services board in June. He said changes in some provincial grants could mean the Durham services would lose $3 million. “We’re applying for all the money we had been receiving. It’s a significant shortfall if we don’t receive them,” Jaswal said, noting the money is used for sala- ries. Durham police budgetto rise by almost $5.7 million DURHAM - Police have arrested a sus- pect in a robbery last November that saw a 60-year-old Oshawa gas bar clerk beat- en. An investigation was launched follow- ing the robbery at the Global Gas station on Taunton Road East on Nov. 27. A sus- pect repeatedly punched a worker before taking cash from the victim's pockets and fleeing, Durham police said. Police arrested a suspect on Monday, Jan. 16 in Thunder Bay. Sean Huycke, 36, of Ennismore, is charged with robbery with violence and breach of probation. The region has been contacted by resi- dents asking about such salespeople, but Durham doesn't sell or endorse water filters or treatment equipment. John Presta, the director of environmen- tal services for Durham, said, "Some of these individuals make false or misleading state- ments about water quality and/or the man- datory replacement of water meters. The region provides clean, safe drinking water which meets provincial water quality stan- dards. Our water undergoes daily monitoring and testing and does not require further filtra- tion or monitoring at residents' expense." If someone shows up at your door, remember the following to protect yourself from scams: • Ask for identification. All regional employ- ees and authorized contractors carry photo ID. • Did you request this house call? Regional staff will not visit without sending an official letter and/or scheduling an appointment. • Call the visiting organization, or the region, to confirm that the visit is legitimate. • Don't feel pressured to sign contracts on the spot, or to let anyone into your home. • Never give out your personal information. Durham provides safe drinking water through the municipal water supply sys- tem, meeting Ontario Drinking Water Qual- ity Standards. The quality and safety of the region's water is confirmed at an accredited laboratory licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The region has established a residential meter replacement upgrade program with its contractor, Neptune Technology Group, to replace or upgrade the meters in homes at no charge to residents. If the meter at your prem- ises requires replacement or an upgrade, before contractors show up, you will receive an official letter from the region notifying you of the upcoming water meter replacement or upgrade. You will also receive a letter from Neptune Technology Group advising you of how to book your appointment. The let- ter requests that residents set up an appoint- ment with the contractor. Neptune installers will arrive on the arranged date and they are uniformed, carry ID, and are highly skilled to ensure a professional installation. Information on water-quality testing is available from the region by contacting the works department at 905-668-7711, and from water quality reports, available online at www.durham.ca/water. It was 1979 and he had just opened Fazio's at the corner of Simcoe and Athol streets. I wandered in and was greeted by a man sporting a finely trimmed moustache and wearing a form-fitting Italian designer shirt and flashy tie. He was straight forward and obviously busy. "I'm Tino Fazio and I can't talk long. Have a lot to do!" he said in his first greeting. I explained why I was there concerning staffing his restaurant. Tino had a strong Italian accent which grew on you! It was hard not to speak to him and not emulate it! That's just what I did though I did it innocently! He caught on! He stopped talking! His eyes squinted and his head tilted to the right! He assumed an aggressive posture saying at the same time, "You making funny the way I talk?" Taken by surprise I tried to explain my miscalculation but it only made him angri- er. Pointing to the door he charged me out and in my haste I knocked over a small table with a bottle of wine on it. He was horrified. I was beyond distraction and picked up the bottle, examining it for damage. "I'm so sorry but your bottle of 1974 Fon- tanafredda Vigna La Rosa is fine! Nice wine," I said. Tino's barrage of expletives suddenly stopped! "You know wine?" he asked. "Yes and this one is truly great!" said I. Tino looked at me and gave a smirk that twitched his moustache. He smiled and pointed to a table at the other side of the restaurant. "Go there," he said, "We have some wine!" That started a friendship which has lasted to this day. The period at Fazio's has since witnessed many events - the creation of several tele- vision programs, the location of several book publication launchings, the sharing of countless bottles of wine and, of course, superb food. Tino in his enthusiastic quest changed the eating and drinking habits of an entire city. To say that Fazio's will be missed is an understatement. Both the cultural and culinary community owes him a debt of gratitude. It is hard to say goodbye to an icon such as Tino but such is life and life is change! I leave you with my thanks to Tino Fazio in doing so much, so greatly. Your Durham region dietitians will help you: take the fight out of food; spot the problem; get the facts; and seek support. Eating should be joyful, not a source of everyday frustration and confusion. If you're fighting with food, try this three-step approach: 1. Spot the problem. Define what's causing your fight with food first. 2. Get the facts. Use facts from credi- ble sources to decide what needs to be done to solve the problem. 3. Seek support. Put the plan into action with support from a dietitian, family and friends. Almost half of Canadians get their food and nutrition information from the Internet, social media or blogs and this is on the rise. Unfortunately, not all advice found online is accu- rate. From unregulated health care practitioners talking about nutrition and selling expensive supplements, to many bloggers and social media personalities with limited or no nutri- tional education, there are many more voices in the nutrition space. It's become difficult and overwhelm- ing to navigate through this nutri- tion jungle. Consider talking to a reg- istered dietitian, to help you take the fight out of food. Dietitians of Cana- da's Nutrition Month 2017 campaign guides people through a three-step approach to improve their relation- ship with food, no matter what the struggle. Dietitians across the country will empower Canadians to identify or define the specific nutrition problem that needs to be solved, since it's caus- ing a food fight. The cumin and cilantro yogurt for the top- ping adds just the right zest and tang. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups plain yogurt, divided 375 ml 3 tbsp tikka, tandoori or other mild curry paste 45 ml 1 tsp grated lime zest 5 ml 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into thin strips 500 g 1 tbsp butter 15 ml 1 onion, thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 tsp salt 1 ml 1 sweet red pepper, chopped 2 cups no-salt-added canned diced tomatoes 500 ml 2 tbsp cornstarch 30 ml 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed, or chopped green beans 250 ml 1/2 tsp ground cumin 2 ml 2 tsp freshly squeezed lime juice 10 ml 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro 30 ml 2 cups hot cooked brown rice 500 ml Basmati rice is traditional to serve with curries and whole grain brown basmati rice is becoming more avail- able and adds a nice flavour to com- plement the curry; regular long-grain brown rice is a good alternative. Instructions • In a bowl, combine 3/4 cup (175 mL) of the yogurt, the tikka paste and lime zest; add chicken and stir to coat well. • Let marinate at room temperature for 10 minutes or cover and refrigerate for up to 4 hours. • In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat; sautee onion, garlic and salt for 3 minutes or until starting to soften. Add sweet red pepper and sau- tee; for 3 minutes or until softened. • Stir in tomatoes and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and boil gently, stirring often, for about 3 minutes or until slightly thickened. • Sprinkle cornstarch over chicken mixture and stir. Add to skillet with peas, stirring well. Simmer, stirring often, for 10 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink inside and sauce is thickened. • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk ground cumin, lime juice and cilantro into remaining 3/4 cup (175 mL) yogurt. Serve chicken in sauce on rice, topped with yogurt. Tips: If canned tomatoes without added salt are unavailable, omit the salt in step 2, then taste the sauce just before serving and add up to 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt to taste. Let the pros handle your income taxes this year Every year, when the time comes to complete your tax return, you wonder what would be the best way of going about it — ask a member of your family who’s good with numbers, use some accounting software, or go see an accountant? One thing is certain: you can never go wrong with an expert. Are you hesitating because of the cost? Here are four reasons why an accountant is your best option. 1. You’re not comfortable with numbers. Completing a tax return requires some skill in bookkeeping and personal nances. You may waste a lot of your time if you’re not comfortable with numbers. 2. Your situation is complex. If you’re self-employed, a business or rental property owner, or if your life situation has changed recently (divorce, early retirement, illness, etc.), your tax return could give you some problems. 3. You’re not immune to error. While some software programs are easy to un der stand, comple ting a tax return is often more complex than it seems. One small mistake can be far more costly than the services of an accountant. 4. You’ll get sound advice. Lastly, calling on the services of an accountant means bene ting from the best possible advice, especially with regard to the best time to make a claim. TAX CHANGESGOT YOU CONFUSED? WE CAN HELP!
